A cover of a cover. To explain, Traveling Riverside Blues is a song by Robert Johnson, covered by Led Zeppelin. The Zeppelin version was in turn covered by this talented lady: Sarah Zimmerman. Someone I've never heard of before, Sarah can sing the Blues. Her voice is powerful, and well suited for the genre. The band does a great job emulating the sound Led Zeppelin put into this song, Keeping the percussion as the main focus of non vocals, and keeping the bass as loud as the guitar.

I've never read a bad book or seen a bad movie that has airships of any kind. Balloons are somewhat of an exception to this, but if I never get the chance to ride in a zeppelin, a simple hot-air balloon will certainly suffice.

Off the top of my head, the stories I've encountered recently with airships are:

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series - just started reading this; it's the direct inspiration for this post

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - a great movie. I highly recommend it.

Airborn and Skybreaker by Kenneth Oppel - one of my favorite children's book authors. This series really doesn't have an age limit, despite being considered a young-adult novel.

Stardust - this one only sort of counts. It's more in the fantasy genre than the rest of this list, and the airship in question is powered by lightning that can be bottled and sold. Stardust is only for the uninitiated airship enthusiast. (And, you know, anyone who thinks it's a good movie. I thought it wasn't bad. It imitated the Princess Bride with moderate success and didn't get too cheesy.)

If you're having a hard time understanding the awesomeness that is a floating ball of gas carrying passengers, watch Sky Captain. If that doesn't do it, read either of those series. If you still need persuading, here's a few reasons airships are the best currently as-yet-invented mode of transportation:

Is not hovering essentially geosynchronous orbit? Airships provide geosynchronous orbit in your backyard... providing your backyard is large enough to support the immense volume of an airship. Sure, that's nothing new, but you must admit, it does sound cool.

Incredibly low fuel costs. Barring leaks and other issues that force you to blow up (not in the Hindenburg sense) your tank of lighter-than-air gas, I would estimate that airships have the transportation costs as your average liquid-faring ship. Bare in mind, that is an estimate. My purpose here is not to compare and contrast the various benefits of different traveling vessels but to merely generate airship fandom.

How about luxury air cruises with much better views than the current brand of oversized ocean liners and no restriction to coastal ports?

Or gigantic mobile homes? The current largest RVs are the size of a semi. With airships, the only limits are your wallet and the FAA.

The best (and hopefully eventual) effects of an airship excited populous are much more radical than one would imagine. First, let's talk about property.

Currently, when someone buys a piece of land, that's exactly what you're doing. You're buying the land. Your property is measured two-dimensionally even though what you actually own is 3-dimensional. There may be local laws on how high or deep you're allowed to build, but it's pretty much yours from the core to the upper atmosphere. I suppose neither of those extremes have been tested, but hopefully it won't come to that before airships dominate the world.

The possibility of airships, or more generally anything that can hover without moving, means that property can be bought and sold in three dimensions. Instead of buying area, you buy volume. The concept of air rights is a relatively primitive example of what is to come.

Right now, all of humanity lives on a coast. Not a land-ocean coast, but a land-sky coast. We've begun to spread to the ocean, but there's no talk of living in the sky (or, while we're at it, underground). Not because it's not feasible, but most likely because it's unimaginable and not visibly necessary yet. But with the world's population exploding, we need somewhere to branch out to. In my more optimistic fantasies, I envision a sky filled with a horizon-to-horizon grid of floating homes and businesses, complete with a steady bustle of traffic across footbridges and on mini commuter balloons.

The possibility for disaster in a society like that is, of course, much higher. Tragedies like a child falling off the edge would need to be accounted for, and the incredible safety required for a hovering city will no doubt put a temporary damper on humanity's expansion into the sky. Hopefully the transition is smooth, and there isn't another Hindenburg-esque incident that pauses airship development for another century.

Right now, the situation seems to be going well. Hybrid airships are such as the Aeroscraft are beginning to enter the minds of the general public as a workable alternative to airplanes, cars, boats, trains, and other forms of mass transportation. With enough development, there's no reason airships shouldn't be as common a sight in the sky as airplanes.

So, as you might or might not know, I have an unhealthy love for Led Zeppelin. No, not all things

So, as you might or might not know, I have an unhealthy love for Led Zeppelin. No, not all things Zep, but what I like about Zep, I REALLY like. I could listen to "IV" and "Houses of the Holy" back to back on infinite repeat for... well, infinity. I have lots of love for the first three albums and "Physical Graffiti", as well. My appreciation starts to wane after that, but it's still good stuff. You also might or might not know that I have tried to put together, with varying degrees of success, some musicians to play some Zep every so often. Anyways, the intro to "Rock and Roll" has always been a sticking point with anyone I play with. Some people get it, some don't. Most people think they get it, but don't really. Most people also have some sort of cheating method to figuring out the intro as opposed to really feeling it.

Up until about 3 days ago, I was in the latter category, I am sad to say. I always knew that there was more to it, but hadn't really investigated too much. My specific sub-category was the "I know how it goes and just deal with it" type. So, running up against the limits of this interpretation, I was compelled to search the interwebs for advice. I found this article by Chris Milillo. I don't know him, but I have to give him credit for opening my ears to this. I decided to take his approach a little further and develop some programmed tracks to help with rearranging the emphasis in the drum intro so that a regular ole Zep loving bass player like me can understand. First... the storied intro to Rock and Roll. Think: Cadillac commercial. No, think: awesome!

Mass Confusion:

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3071851_ac20z/rnr.mp3]

If you're like most people, you assume that the great John Bonham is starting on the "one". That is, you take the very first snare/hat hit to be the first beat of the measure in common time. You would be wrong. I never really questioned it. Partly to blame is my love for Zep. I just assumed that since they were all bad-asses that it made sense to them and Bonzo knew exactly what he was doing. Well, I was right in a way. It did make sense to them and Bonzo DID know what he was doing. That is because he was paying homage to early rock and roll (as is the rest of the song both lyrically and musically). I am just not from the right generation to have really recognized it instantly like Page, Plant, and Jones would've. Here is what Bonzo is tipping his hat too, most likely:

Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'"

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3071850_bcbf6/keepaknockin.mp3]

So, it's pretty obvious after hearing that that there is more to the Zep intro. There is. The first beat is not the "one", but rather the "and of three". Once you can count it out and retrain your brain to start where Bonzo's is starting, then a whole new world will exist for you and your love of Zep (I'm assuming that if you are still reading this you are probably not a casual fan of Zep).

So, let's get started on the lesson. I cranked up Garage Band and brought up a simple Rock Kit sound to substitute (however poorly) for a vintage Ludwig Vistalite kit. This first file is the intro with emphasis added to the true "one" of the intro. I also added a strong kick drum to count it off and keep your ear on the beat throughout. Here it is:

Emphasis on the "one":

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3071852_jqfyq/rnrintro_emphs.mp3]

The next step to really drive it home is that I made it swing! Swinging has the effect of, amongst other desirable effects, distinguishing the even eighth notes from the odd ones. This means that instead of a string of beats that all sound the same and are evenly spaced, you can distinguish whether an eighth note is a "number" or an "and". One usually counts eighth notes like this: "one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and-one-and...." etc. for common time (4/4). With no swinging and no volume emphasis, they can all run together. Think of your drummer sound checking his snare by hitting it over and over consistently to determine a mic level. Which snare hit serves as the "one"? Kind of an irrelevant question, you might tell me. If he or she were swinging the beat, you could at least tell me whether each note was a "one, two, three, four" or an "and" of those notes. Get it? What Bonham plays on Rock and Roll is like the no-swing effect. It's really straight and hard to tell where the "number" notes are. If you add some swing to it, it becomes obvious and is really easy to find the proper beat. Let's hear it with swing!

As in "to swing"

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3071853_gvmep/rnrintro_swng.mp3]

Now, listen to the original again and feel groovy:

[audio http://boxstr.com/files/3071851_ac20z/rnr.mp3]

That is where my analysis ends. It really helps me get it. I like it so much that I think everyone deserves to know about this. I think it is more fun to listen to now. I really understand where the boys were going with this song. Have fun and happy listening.

I think that even now, 90 years after the end of the First World War, the phrase "Zeppelin flying over London" has a slightly sinister ring to it.

This afternoon, on the way to meet Tigger from work, I took the photo on the left. It shows a modern Zeppelin airship flying sedately through the hazy London sky. Fortunately, its pilot's intentions are peaceful, being concerned with tourism.

According to the information I have to hand, the Zeppelin will take you to explore London at a height of about 1,000 feet (300 metres), travelling at 30 mph, for ticket prices ranging from £185 to £360, depending on the length of the flight. You will have to hurry, though, because the flying season, which began in the second week of July, ends on August 21st.

You will be pleased to hear that the airship, a Zeppelin NT07, is filled with helium, not hydrogen, thus ruling out any disaster of the sort that overtook the Hindenburg.

I first spotted the airship as I emerged from Borough tube station. It was crossing Borough High Street or Newington Causeway and that would have been a perfect shot but it disappeared behind the buildings within seconds. I kept looking out for it and finally spotted it when looking along an alleyway at the end of Borough High Street.

I think you must get a wonderful view of London from up there on a clear day and Tigger and I would certainly like to take the trip but the cost is prohibitive. We will have to stick to surface travel for now!

Led Zeppelin is without a doubt my favorite band. Heartbreaker is a great example of a classic Led Zeppelin song. From the famous guitar riff to its lyrical progression, this song screams Zeppelin. The song starts with the famous electric guitar riff, backed by the drumming of John Bonham, and progresses towards a lyrical verse. The song switches back and forth between lyrical progressions and musical bridges leading up to the solo. The solo is about 50 seconds, and begins with a series of hammer-ons and pull-offs, and progresses towards a quicker speed of playing. Robert Plant sings about how a girl he used to date (the heartbreaker) is back and town, and how she always cheated on him. He will not be fooled again and leaves the woman.

From Led Zeppelin II, Heartbreaker was a cornerstone of the album, showcasing the talent of all members of the band, and provided a taste of what was to come.

If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding! -Another Brick in the Wall (Pt.2

If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! -Another Brick in the Wall (Pt.2)

Pink Floyd surfaced about during the psychedelic 60's. Although starting in the hippie scene they quickly began to mature in their music style. Such a style of rock that has caused the name Pink Floyd to become known unto every generation to date. Only a few bands have been able to stay in the minds of generations; such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2, Nirvana. The overall intoxicating sound of this killer band makes it one of my most favourite bands of all time.

[caption id="attachment_117" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Seen this icon before?"][/caption]

Pink Floyd developed a sound of rock that goes beyond the genre. Rock is defined by guitar shedding, screaming vocalists, and giant most pits. Such a song as this is the complete opposite! Using instruments other than the basic guitars and drums is unheard of by the general public! "Us and Them" is the perfect example of the uniqueness Pink Floyd has brought to the table.

The usage of sounds in a song isn't seen very often today. Mostly due to the fact that many artist fail to pair up instruments and noises in an attractable format. The noises I am referring to are most anything. A cash register, water drops, and ticking clocks for example. Using it to the fullest extent is determined by how well it is melted with the song. "Time" does just that with clocks in the intro quickly developing into esquesite melody of this rock masterpiece.

In all honesty, this is barely even considered rock in my mind. The absence of a 6-string guitar rocking out at full blast alongside of a killer vocalist isn't rock in most minds. Instead of the played out rock song, this is completely different...a female soul singer who seems to be pouring out her soul into this truely beautiful symphony called "Great Gig in the Sky". The changing this song to seem more "rock" would be an injustice to Pink Floyd and music all together. This song doesn't need lyrics...the power of this song allows you to interpret anyway you want.

The epidemy of Pink Floyd is this very song called "One Slip". Undoubtfully, this is my favourite for my own reasons. The intro screams climatic build-up. Every part of this song is raveled together to bring out one of my favourite rock songs ever. The bass, guitar, drums, vocals, and electronics is a marvel of perfection...the lyrics illustrate what can be related to any person. Not much else to be said about perfection.

Led Zep guitar legend Jimmy Page has confirmed that there will be more Zeppelin shows.

Speaking to the Telegraph after the Foo Fighters Wembley gig on the weekend, Page said that the band is ready to reunite and perform more live events.

Led Zeppelin reformed for a one-off show at the O2 Arena in London last December to pay tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

A fully-fledged world tour for 2008 was out of the question because of prior touring commitments for lead singer Robert Plant. Plant is currently touring the US in support of his album with Alison Krauss.

Page suggested that the Led Zeppelin tour won't happen until the second half of 2009.

Meanwhile, Robert Plant is performing a number of Led Zeppelin songs with Krauss on their current tour. 'When The Levee Breaks', 'Black Dog', and 'The Battle of Evermore' have been played on this tour.

We've been wanting to impersonate Led Zeppelin in a videogame since the release of Guitar Hero. But it looks like it's never going to happen.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Jimmy Page, and his bandmates have repeatedly turned down offers from both Activision and MTV to use their tunes in either Rock Band or Guitar Hero music games. The band isn't "comfortable with the prospect of granting outsiders access to its master tapes." "It ain't about the money," says Led Zep manager Peter Mensch.

More interesting info from the Wall Street Journal: These bands are all in talks to have content included in music games (either Rock Band or Guitar Hero):

Van Halen,

the Eagles,

Steely Dan

Guns N' Roses

What games their music will be available in hasn't been announced, nor has whether a band-specific games are coming from these groups been determined, but it's fun to imagine what Guitar Hero: Steely Dan would be like.

Lyrics:

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
(And) when she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh ooh ooh...ooh...ooh ooh ooh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Oooh...It makes me wonder
Oooh...It makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Oooh...It makes me wonder
Oooh...And it makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon, if we all called the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

Woe woe woe woe woe oh
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

And it makes me wonder...ohhh ooh woe

Your head is humming and it won't go -- in case you don´t know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll
Ooooooooooooh

And she's buying a stairway to heaven

This is/was the most played song on the radio!
