It depends on which TM you look at. Maybe tightening the head more then once after installation was a common knowledge then for 1940s mechanics? At any rate, you have to have more than one manual with these jeeps. I found the answer on page 69, No. 18, TM 37-2810, March 1945.

"Caution: Cylinder heads should not ordinarily be tightened unless there is a definite indication of looseness or leaks. If tightening is necessary, use a torque-indicating wrench and tighten in the sequence and to the tension specified in the vehicle Technical Manual. When a new gasket is installed, tighten three times as follows: First, upon installation, second, after engine is warmed up, and third, after completing final road test."

I found searching through Flickr for good photographs for which to examine brick colours, surrounding terrain detail, tree shapes, water course colours, town layouts and the like very time-consuming for the few useful photos I found. This is largely because few people will use the same words as Tags to describe their photographs as you use for searching. Exceptions are the WW2 history buffs, but many photographs are those belonging to tourists and they will use general terms for their subject content, such as "house" +"Germany", whereas you'll be looking for "town house" + "brick" + "world war".

I would therefore advocate using Google or Alltheweb or whatever your favourite search engine is, and just do webpage searches, not image searches - again, because images embedded or linked on webpages often don't have the sorts of words you'll be trying to search with (some may just have a number). However, as part of your search, do try using "photo" as part of the search.

Do some searches and do look through at least the first five pages of results. Do try looking at some webpages and have a look at the photos/images there. Once you strike gold, mine the whole seam and if the website has a page of Links, try those links too.

To date, those have been my experiences and these techniques will be what I keep using into the first part of 2009. Hopefully by then, photos in Flickr may have some better Tags.

There are those that argue we would not like the texture of the "original" paint used on the jeep, if we could obtain it. Eddie Guffee, a friend of mine with a GPW jeep painted with WW2 paint, pretty much agreed with this when he posed his question about using some 1943 or 44 paint that he has. He didn't like the texture or the results of vehicle use on the appearance of the vehicle. Jim Gilmore has told us the currently available paints are not exactly right. (We hope to hear more about his experiments in the future).

I recently acquired TM 10-455, March 13, 1942, The Body Finisher, Woodworker, Upholsterer, Painter and Glassworker. This is a very interesting little manual.

"The basic function of paint on a motor vehicle body is to preserve the metal or wood to which it is applied. Another very important function is to enhance the vehicle's appearance."

"Synthetic olive-drab lusterless enamel--Since the initiation of the national defense program, however, the second function has been largely abandoned insofar as Army motor vehicles are concerned. Camouflage is considered more important than ornamentation in paint....all tactitical vehicles are now painted the new, synthetic, olive-drab, lusterless enamel. This finish was developed to blend with the average landscape without reflecting light, which might reveal the presence of the vehicle even at a considerable distance."

"Blue-drab stencil enamel--It was found that white stencil enamel, formerly used for marking vehicles, could be photographed from the air. Therefore, this was superceded by the newly developed blue-drab stencil enamel which cannot be photographed from the air. It cannot be read by the normal eye at a distance greater than 75 feet."

"Care of lusterless enamel--In order to preserve the camouflage features of the lusterless finish, more care must be taken with vehicles. To secure the necessary degree of dullness, it was necessary to adopt a relatively rough paint. A dried coat of this paint contains thousands of angular particles of pigment* which break up the surface so that a minimum of light is reflected. Continued friction or rubbing will eventually smooth down the surface and produce a glossy finish....As careless washing is one of the principal causes, the vehicle should not be washed oftener than once a week, and then only with a sponge or soft rag. The surface should never be rubbed or wiped, except while wet, or a gloss will be developed."

*Based on this description of the texture of the paint we can surmise that the modern paints though flat are not rough enough in texture. Looking at samples that I have received from several sources, no paint currently available appears to offer this rough finish. Until this rough finish can be duplicated (and dare I say accepted) no vehicle requiring war-time lusterless olive-drab is completely restored. This isn't a matter of lead, it is a matter of getting the correct amount of "angular surfaces to break up light".

"It is not necessary to keep the new lusterless vehicles as scrupulously clean as was customary when glossy paint was used."

"Grease spots should be tolerated as far as possible. The relatively porous paint soaks up oil as a blotter absorbs ink. Whatever grease cannot be removed by washing with degreasing solvent should be allowed to remain."

"Fading--The new paint has some tendency to fade....Test at Holabird Quartermaster Depot indicate that repainting will probably be needed once yearly for olive-drab enamel and twice yearly for blue-drab."

Also of interest but an aside-- Stencils--Brass stencils...are sometimes used, but the most satisfactory stencils are probabily ready-cut paper ones that are used once and thrown away. Stencil paper is required for cutting special stencils. The ties in the letters are cut out with a sharp knife or razor blade. (Ties are cross pieces in an inclosed letter like O, which keep the center of the stencil in place.) Spray on the lettering, pull the stencils off, and throw them away. "

Of course, until such paint is delivered and accepted, you will have to do the best you can with what you have.

War.   Heroes.   Race.   the Miraculous

In this human struggle we each grind out day by day, once in a while something comes along that reminds us that people are in this thing together.....that while not that many 'things' are tangibly worth fightin-hardly dying-for, we will do things we never imagined to protect people.  Hurricanes, tragedies, illnesses throw out the caution flag in life, reminding us to slow down and be there for one another.   It's not just the ugly and painful....but sometimes the beautiful that reminds us how badly our hands, hearts, arms and shoulders are needed.

I found something beautiful in the new Spike Lee movie, "Miracle at St. Anna".   A story of 4 men who, rather than fighting for a tangible 'principle', found themselves fighting for the life of one boy, and in doing, that, fought for hundreds of people, a town, a country, and principles.   The character, "Train", from the Buffalo soldiers (all-black 92nd Infantry Division fighting in Italy) protects the life of one boy, involves his 3 comrades.... he is affectinately called, "my Chocolate Giant" by the little boy, 'Angelo'.  By fighting to save his life, the men find their own lives and hope.....even extending to 40 years later.

There are several veins and plotlines, and conversation amongst the soldiers about miracles and faith, in the midst of hopelessness and suffering.  

I highly recommend the movie, with WW2 violence much like Private Ryan, it is a little tough, and there are a couple of 'adult situations'.   Way to go Spike.

Great stirring stuff, with a stirring theme tune that I found myself humming on my way to work this morning.
Some odd things though. There is a black Labrador featured in the movie called “Nigger". Although perfectly innocent and absolutely of the time it is an indictment of age that the repeated use of an in context dog’s name should jar such. The dog’s name has been either deleted or dubbed to read Trigger on television screenings of the film since 1999. The Index on Censorship have condemned ITV’s editing of the dog’s name as "unnecessary and ridiculous"

The United Kingdom ratified Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions in 1998. Protocol I states that, “if such attack may cause the release of dangerous forces and consequent severe losses among the civilian population”, but the UK went on to make the following reservation in respect of Article 56:

In short today the Dambusters raid on the Möhne dam, the Eder dam and the Sorpe dam would breach the Geneva Conventions with the exception of the UK who have left a back door open to justify such atrocities.

So, i’m doing something about it. I’ve recently made contact with my great uncle Alvin, and I feel that his correspondance is going to be incredibly valuable to my research. You may or may not know that Harland is not my real surname. My real surname is Hartley, but you try saying that in a Northern accent over the phone to a call center and you’ll see just how difficult it is for people to understand what you’re saying (if I had a penny for every time I was asked if i said Harvey or Hardy I’d be a rich woman). So, to make things simple for everyone I write under the name of my great-grandmother’s family, Harland. It’s not so different. Anyway, I’ve gotten in touch with my great Uncle Alvin Hartley, and he has just this morning revealed something i was not expecting.

My great-great grandfather Joseph Henry Hartley was a senior member of the Ancient Order of Druids.

Yes. As in the secret society, much like the Freemasons, founded in 1791. From Wikipedia: “By the early twentieth century it had become a more open, general society with aims “convivial, fraternal and philanthropic”. The group was the first to practise rituals at Stonehenge in the historic period and adopted the site for ordination of its members on 25th August 1905 when around 700 modern druids gathered at the monument to take oaths and welcome new acolytes.”

I don’t know whether to be intrigued or appalled. I’ve contacted the Order to find out if they have any records of his membership but, to be honest, the idea of him being ordaned in to an Ancient Order of Druids at Stonehenge isn’t really something I had expected to find from any of my relatives.

Uncle Alvin told me that Edward had been killed in September 1944 at Arnhem in the Netherlands, and I was surprised to discover that only just two years ago my great-great uncle Edward was highly publicised in the news. World War II soldier honoured in The Netherlands

Sixty years after he was killed in action, Leeds soldier Lance Sergeant Edward Hartley of The Border Regiment, has been remembered in a re-dedication service at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery in The Netherlands today, Thursday 15 June 2006.

LSgt Hartley joined the Border Regiment in 1940 and served in North Africa in 1943. He was reported missing, killed in action, on 20 September 1944, aged 31. He was buried as an unknown soldier in Oosterbeek Cemetery and was identified by the Dutch Army Recovery Team in 2005, using regimental dental records.

Today’s service was attended by LSgt Hartley’s daughter, Patricia Summers, and her family. The Honour Guard and Buglers were formed by The 1st Battalion, the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment (KORBR), who accorded LSgt Hartley full military honours. The Band of the Royal Netherlands Air Force provided the music at the ceremony.

In July 2006 The King’s Own Royal Border Regiment (KORBR) will amalgamate with The King’s Regiment and The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment to form the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. Also today 192 members of KORBR will travel in small groups to the sites of 44 Battle Honours borne on their Regimental Colours (Exercise GLOBAL DRAGON). The visits will take place concurrently, with a small Battlefield Tour and ceremony held at each site.

Following the ceremony at Oosterbeek Cemetery LSgt Hartley’s daughter Patricia was presented with a cygnet ring, which was found with her father’s remains. She said: “I felt really honoured that so many people went to so much trouble to make this happen. It’s a day I shall never forget.”

I’m actually quite sad that I knew nothing about this, but I also feel a mixture of pride and relief that his body was identified and he was able to have a proper burial ceremony. I understand that the majority of soldiers weren’t so lucky.

Voilà un nouveau trailer pour Valkyrie, le dernier film de Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men, Superman Returns) avec Tom Cruise et qui raconte l'histoire vraie du complot du 20 juiullet 1944 où une tentative d'assassinat a été préparée par de nombreuses personnes dont des officiers allemands. Le film a été repoussé pendant trés longtemps de par son sujet et aussi avec une polémique sur la scientologie de Tommy mais les studios semblent enfin décidé à le sortir.

Tom Cruise incarne le colonel Claus von Stauffenberg qui opére en Afrique durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Mais suite à une grave blessure, il retourne dans l'Allemagne Nazie où il aide à réaliser un plan nommé Opération Valkyrie qui consiste à établir un gouvernement de l'ombre en cas de décés du Führer, et ce afin de prendre contrôle du pays et de faire la paix avec les Alliés. Il finit par rejoindre la résistance allemande et de statut de conspirateur, il passe en première ligne et se retrouve à devoir tuer Hitler lui même pour le bien de l'Opération Valkyrie...

Pas fan du poster du film qui n'a pas l'air de bien retranscrire l'atmosphére du film mais par contre le trailer est vraiment bluffant ! Le montage avec le tic-tac de la bombe est vraiment excellent et laisse présager un film avec un gros bon suspense. J'aime pas trop Tom Cruise mais quand il est bien dirigé, il peut avoir du talent quant à Singer, j'apprécie son travail (même le décrié Superman Returns) il a un bon sens du plan (celui avec la cigarette tue bien). Le seul point un peu noir c'est qu'ils auraient pu pousser l'immersion et le réalisme du film en faisant les dialogues en allemand. Pour le coup, voir les nazi parler en anglais, ça le fait moyen mais bon n'est pas Mel Gibson qui veut.

I Was A Fireman

Not a true W&M jingoistic experience admittedly but well worth a look. The DVD also has a wealth of Jennings shorts including the gob smacking The Silent Village, the true story of the massacre of a small Czech village by the Nazis is retold as if it happened in Wales. Anyone who has spent time in rural Wales will be inhuman not to be blown away by this 36 minute gem. Deffo a Love Film rental for anyone interested in realism, cinematic poetry and powerful story telling.

 I say absolutely. A truly remarkable film dealing with those that were left behind. My chum is also a vegan so I guess that he would need a special evening of wartime romance and tofu. The film is directed by the incomprable David Lean and is based on a one act play by the sublime Noel Coward. Fantastic stuff. If you haven't seen the film watch out for it and if you are anything like me you will be asking yourself, "will she or won't she" right to the very end.

One good tip that emerged from the meeting was the Spicer warning that the nuts used to tighten U-bolts on universal Joints better be tightened evenly. Otherwise, there's an uneven strain on the bearing cap which causes the cap to brinell. When this happens, you get a vibration about at a speed of 35 mph - a nice tingling sensation up the soles of your feet.

The bottom or "U" part of the U-bolt is a flat surface. This fits snugly around the bearing cap. Besides fitting snugly, it must fit evenly all around the bearing cap.

Best way to guarantee that it will fit evenly, is to first tighten each of the U-bolts fingertight, then, with a wrench, tighten them one at a time, a little more, and a little more then a little more, 'til the nuts are down snug. No fair checking for even tightening by counting the threads as they emerge from the nuts. Some of these U-bolts aren't cut off evenly and one side may have more threads than the other.

 My Mom always joked about having a Hugh Bazooka in her back pocket! My Mom also Loves Pink.

So now my Mom's dream comes true... a Pink Bazooka! 

Now I guess all she need is more kids! Add a Red Jeep in with that and you have a very Happy Mommy.

The first of my StuG III's by Italeri have come off the assembly line and are complete.

I'm doing some minor kitbashing to modify and enhance them.  Have a look at this photo:

On the back, I used leftover parts from the Roden Opel Maultiers and Opel Blitzes to make an equipment frame for the crew's gear. This was a common field modification and some were even added in the factory. Panzer Grenadiers also found them useful as handholds when riding on the back. They were simple bits of metal welded into a crude frame.

Using leftover brass wire from the ACE PaK 38's and my fine hand screwdriver, I added the aerial. I also wanted the vehicle to look battle-hardened, so I used my scalpels and files to remove the first plate of the left-hand-side schurzen. Schurzen plates were often lost from enemy fire or were snagged and ripped off when moving through rough scrub and rough terrain.

Lastly, I didn't want this vehicle to have an autumn of spring look (mud everywhere), so I went for a high summer look and liberally coated it with dust. The effect is quite good. Careful observers will notice I painted in some sides of the track links being used as extra armour...again, another field modification by some crews.

I like this Italeri kit. Yes, it's been simplified and doesn't allow much modification but turns into a fine kit with a little extra work and love.

The AT43 Fans in the Club managed our largest game so far with 2.2k of Karmans vs a similar sized combined Human (UNA plus Red Blok) force. Rob having finally managed to get a more balanced Karman force and some new units making their debut and duly trounced Dave and Myself's combined force.

The Victorious Karmen though Guys that did the damage where the Wendigos on the other wing wiping out a RPG Colossus unit and a Dragonov Kommando unit with the Wendingos support grenade launchers on the same turn (ouch!).
