Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Flogging Molly, Bang Camaro, Wolfmother and plenty of Iron Maiden grace my desktop. Digital downloads purchased through various sources, handed down from a friend, or simply acquired over the ages are cranked up in cars, on headphones, and on stereos all over the world. With more listeners turning to downloads in various forms, album sales are declining and digital downloads are the wave of the future.

Portable tunes, by the thousands, for busy parents, runners, students, and kids are marketed in increasing numbers. Some bands even offer digital downloads exclusively. You can flick a switch, turn a dial, or thumb your screen to get access to thousands of bands and songs instantly, without needing to carry that oh so heavy manuscript of CDs everywhere. I was a convert to the portable age, until, at last, I was shown the light.

A sampling of sound and a simple explanation by my brother, a practicing music genius attending Full Sail, changed the channel to something amazing. The audio quality of a  standard MP3 is condensed, of course, to make it so darn small. The untrained ear, or those ears that listen to the pop music of Ashlee Simpson, would never notice the extreme loss of quality. Harmonics vanish, sounds are condensed and muffled, and you would never notice if you never knew better. A 44 MB file condensed into a 4 MB file equals one trashy, yet portable, excuse for a tune. Since some of us find ourselves totting 1000 songs, but only listening to a 10-20 every day, there's a solution.

Most MP3 players, the iPOD included, have a simple option to switch the transfer quality from a CD to WAV instead of MP3. Yes, you need to buy the album. We all love the RIAA, but, give that 5% of the album sale to the artist, make them bigger, see them on tour, and rock! If a download is the method of choice, make sure the bitrate is high or the format is availabe in WAV so that your first time hearing a new album will be an amazing experience (unless you listen to garbage, in which case formats can not help you).

Fue el final perfecto. Un chute de energía y compromiso de futuro inconformista. En el entorno perfecto, un Rock in Rio que proclama un mundo mejor. La catarsis perfecta entre un público totalmente entregado y el hippie de Toronto, que no defraudó a nadie.

La verdad es que tenía muchas ganas de verle en directo. Incluso a pesar de sus sesenta y dos tacos y de que los excesos le han llevado a un estado de salud endeble (hace relativamente poco en 2005 un aneurisma le dejó ligeramente tocado). Pero por lo demostrado en el escenario se mueve como nadie, se deja la piel en cada riff y sigue manteniendo fuerte su voz personalísima. Por momentos pareció poseído por el mismísimo espíritu de Woodstock y quería retrotraernos a aquel mítico agosto del 69 e incendiarnos con su rock violento. Muchas jóvenes promesas del rock actual (tipo Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Killers, Wolfmother, Black Mountain…) podrían aprender de la actitud encima del escenario de esta bestia rockera sexagenaria.

De un concierto para la historia destaco el fantástico comienzo con “Mr.Soul” de su época con Buffalo Springfield, la quebradiza “The Needle and the Damage Done” y el banjo de “Old Man” del Harvest, el country inconsolable “Too Far Gone” de ese gran disco de los 80 que fue Freedom, “Love and Only Love” una de sus mejores canciones de los 90 del Ragged Glory que inmortalizó durante más de 10 minutos y pasó a convertirla en un himno, una larguísima aunque maravillosa "No Hidden Path" que no conocía de su último disco Chrome Dreams II, y cómo no, mi preferida de siempre “Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)”.

Se echaron en falta clasicazos como Southern Man, Rockin’ in the Free World, Cowgirl in the Sand, Like a Hurricane, Cortez the Killer, Pocahontas… Pero qué cojones, el concierto fue de 10. Esperemos que regrese pronto.

Un último detalle, después de ver los resúmenes en TVE y los vídeos de La2 subidos en YouTube tengo que decir que los comentarios de Toni Garrido y Ángel Carmona me parecen lamentables y que estropean el conjunto . Por Dios, dejen de hablar gilipolleces mientras suena auténtico rock&roll!!!

Então, passe a conhecê-los!

Banda fantástica, australiana, que faz um rock crú setentista. Mas, espere... som "vintage" mas eles só tem um CD lançado, e começaram a banda em 2004. Sim, são um bando de moleques (ok, ok, como nós).

No site deles, dá pra ouvir uma boa parte das músicas do CD (é só clicar no nome deles, na primeira frase do texto). Baita álbum, intitulado Wolfmother, que têm influências de Hendrix, Stones, Zeppelin, Black Sabath... entre tantos outros. Só ir ouvindo cada música atentamente que dá pra perceber onde eles foram beber suas inspirações.

Rock que é rock... sem enrolações!

Enfim, fica a dica. Se gosta do nosso som, provavelmente vai gostar do deles.

In case you haven't heard, the Yellow Bird Project is a non-profit, charity organization, where they get artists we all know and love (Stars, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Hayden, Holly Throsby, My Brightest Diamond, Devendra Banhart, The National, Rilo Kiley, The Shins, Wolf Parade, Wolfmother, Broken Social Scene, King Creosote and Joseph Arthur) to design a t-shirt, with the proceeds going to the charity of the band/artist's choice. Some charities that have been chosen are: The Elliott Smith Memorial Fund , The Nature Conservancy, and Art For Change.

This is a very awesome organization and i am honored to be writing a weekly blog for them!

Por cierto, con los puntos sobrantes compre N.I.B de Black Sabath y Joker & The Thief de Wolfmother, muy buenas pero solo la ultima me esta dando problemas en expert.

I understand the appeal of the progenitors. I even appreciate the talent of those directly inspired who took up the torch of their rock forefathers through the seventies and early eighties. I like Zeppelin, Hendrix wrote some damn killer songs and even though I don't like prog much stuff like Camel and King Crimson has its appeal to many the world over. Black Sabbath are the godfathers of my precious METAL! So WHY?!?!?! if these original bands were so good, and their subsequent second-foundlings rocked less originally but still had merit, do we now suffer these trendy retro-chic wankers? Even Mike Patton hates them!

So, in summation, retro-chic is a thoughtless commercial gimmick, and the sooner the moronic gimps who consume music in a detached and pseudo-semiotic fashion look to the ORIGINAL SOURCE of 70's rock, ie the bands that ORIGINALLY made such music, the better off we'll be. Also, it'll mean tragically hip bullshit like this will be replaced by an equally infuriating, soulless and disrespectful quick-cash-grab at a music style that meant something to a lot of people in times gone by. May the desolate one guide us down the left-hand path to the good stuff.

Das Lied im Werbeclip ist ein sehr ruhiges, hat jedoch sehr große Ähnlichkeit zu einem Wolfmother Song. Auf der gleichnamigen Platte Wolfmother befindet sich ein Lied mit dem Titel Joker and the Thief welches sich wie eine rockige Variante des Tracks aus der Werbung anhört.

Leider habe ich bisher noch kein Lied gefunden, dass identisch zu dem in der Werbung klingt. Es ist zu vermuten, dass dieses kurze Soundstück extra für diese Werbung produziert werden wie auch schon andere zuvor. Falls ich dennoch auf ein Lied stoße, dann erfolgt ein update!

So I’m scanning through all my press releases and alerts, and I come across “SUGABABES SCRAP PLANS FOR NEW ALBUM.” Immediately my mind tracks back to a year ago when I was in Australia hanging out at this bar in Port Macquarie. I was a fun, smoky joint with slot machines. But what I remember most is the the fight I got into with some stupid Aussie cunt. Yes, I know that sounds vulgar but it’s normal Aussie slang. Me and my girl who was traveling with me were having some cocktails with these guys we had met while having dinner at their Italian restaurant. This drunken Aussie chick stumbles along, joins all of us with her sweet little gay friend and right away was being a bitch. This shit amuses me at times so I bare with it. Granted I love Aussies, especially Richard Flude … hehehe ... But yeah, this girl started raggin’ on American music and blah blah blah. I told her I like a lot of Aussie bands and non American music as well such as Rose Tattoo, The Presets, Wolfmother, and so on. She dissed those bands, and knowing that their all pretty damn good I I knew she just had it out for me. So I asked her what she though was "good music." One of her ignorant replies was a Spice Girls knock off call the Sugababes, who aren't even Australian, they're British. From there, the bitch in me came out, and I just laughed and ripped her a new asshole. She flicked a cigarette at me, so I chucked my drink at her and knocked her off her barstool. And mind you, I do not fight. I thinks it trashy and stupid, but this chick flicked a cigarette at me! Well, we both got kicked out of the bar and that was that. But I got a snap of her (below).

But back to the press release, the Sugababes have pushed the release of their new album back to sometime in 2009. But don't bother getting it cause they suck ass. Unless you're in elementary school or idolized the Spics Girls, then you go girl! Go on with yo' bad self and get that album.

Igår ringde en väldigt trevlig kvinna ifrån ett ungdomsprojekt som jag skickat en spontanansökan till efter att ha läst en artikel om dem i tidningen. Hon var jätteglad att jag visat intresse och trodde att jag hade passat perfekt, men tyvärr hade de redan hunnit anställa alla som behövdes för tillfället, så hon erbjöd mig en plats på väntelistan där hon försäkrade mig att jag hamnade längst upp. Så får vi se. Det bubblar lite i magen.

Vidare fick jag mail från ett Traineeprogram jag sökt som inriktar sig på att utbilda framtidens unga kommunala ledare och senast imorgon får jag reda på om jag gått vidare till den första omgången av två med auditions, intervjuer och grupparbete. Gud så nervöst! Sökte även i fjol men gick inte vidare.

Idag sökte jag jobb som Coach/Projektledare inom ett statligt projekt för ungdomar som hamnat snett och levt en tid på ungdomshem för att nu komma tillbaka till den "vanliga" världen där de behöver stöd för att utvecklas i en positiv riktning och hålla sig kvar där. Det hade jag tyckt var jättegivande! Jag vet dock inte hur bra min ansökan blev. Satt på vuxendagis och skrev den och det var fullproppat med folk här av alla nationaliteter som hellre satt och fika utan kaffe än att söka jobb, så det var ett jädra tjatter här.

Min procedur för att skriva en bra ansökan brukar annars grunda sig i musik och tystnad. Paradoxalt? Nej inte egentligen. Jag behöver energi, så jag sätter på en riktigt bra låt som fyller mina sinnen med power, t.ex. "Woman" av Wolfmother, den funkar alltid för mig. Och så lyssnar jag, och så dansar jag (en och annan luftgitarr kan vara involverad), och så blir jag svettig och får upp pulsen - och sen är jag redo. Redo för tystnad, redo för fokus, redo för att sälja mig själv på bästa sätt. Så gör jag det, skriver snabbt, det är aldrig något problem, det är tänkandet som tar tid för mig.

Ellos, además de otros muchos grupos, van a ser los encargados de continuar el legado del rock en unos tiempos dominados por el internet y la alta comercialidad, además del mal estado de las discográficas, que cada vez intentan dominar más a los grupos y su trabajo.  Y como cada vez se oye menos rock, la gente piensa que no hay grupos nuevos. Claro error.

COMENTARIO: Todas las canciones que he puesto arriba son puntazos, pero lo mejor es que son del mismo álbum. Wolfmother son los encargados de "salvar" el rock, ya que sus manos hacen interesante todo este sano revival, lo actualizan, lo retocan y lo dejan preparado para la acción. Rompieron todos los moldes con su canción Woman, que suena tanto al pasado que alguno se pregunta si es una versión.

ESTILO: Rock. A secas.

INFLUENCIAS: The Beatles, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, The Faces, Led Zeppelin.

MEJORES CANCIONES: Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Cold Hard Bitch, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is,  Look What You´ve Done

COMENTARIO: Siempre es bueno escuchar grupos rockeros en el mainstream, y este grupo logra inusualmente acaparar la radiofórmula, algo no muy normal para un grupo de rock. En claro auge, abriendo conciertos para los Stones, vendiendo por millones sus discos y haciendo que la gente se pase al rock, Jet siguen con su particular mezcla de los Beatles y AC/DC. Quizá pequen de poca originalidad en sus composiciones, en plan "oye, vamos a hacer una canción que se parezca a AC/DC, otra a los Stones, etc" Pero también cuentan con muy buenas manos. No funcionan bien en solitario, pero en conjunto pueden doblegar a muchos. Sin duda uno de los bastiones del nuevo rock y uno de los grupos con más futuro de todos.

KINGS OF LEON

ESTILO: Garage Rock. O quizá Rock Sureño.

INFLUENCIAS: Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd,

MEJORES CANCIONES: On Call, California Waiting, Fans, The Bucket.

COMENTARIO: Estuvieron bajo el poder de la religión en su infancia: quizá la doctrina religiosa de este grupo de hermanos y primos es demasiado grande para ser un grupo rockero. El barbas del batería lo dice todo. Lo que no hay que negar es su buen afan compositora, su buen hacer en las canciones, y, que demonios, que hacen rock de forma genial (o como no decir deputamadre) Siempre han sido un grupo al que no le gusta las grandes audiencias, pero cada vez son más famosos, en especial por On Call, su canción más comercial y número 1 en varios países. yo la pondría, pero es que ya sería la 3ª vez en este blog, y no quiero parecer un disco rayado. En todo caso, un grupo a tener en cuenta, y por cierto, a pesar de empezar a la vez que sus contemporáneos The Strokes y The Vines, y antes que Wolfmother, son muy jóvenes. El mayor no supera los 26.

 THE ANSWER

ESTILO: Hard Rock

INFLUENCIAS: Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin.

MEJORES CANCIONES: Under The Sky, Come Follow Me, Never Too Late, Be What You Want, Keep Believin´.

COMENTARIO: Su llegada en 2006 con su disco Rise fue un auténtico estruendo, como ya en sí era el disco: era la vuelta de un hard rock no muy hermanado con el de The Darkness, más abierto y más ... ¿comercial?, es un hard rock rápido, sucio, de estribillos coreables, de riffs aplaudibles, pero sin esa estética glam. Paul Mahon, guitarrista, tras convencer a Cornac Neeson, que cantaba blues en Nueva York, fundó "la respuesta" que sin duda se está ganando un nombre de forma bastante rápida. Es disco de oro, la Kerrang! y la Heavy Rock les han otorgado varios premios (muy merecidos) y este año se espera su segundo largo. Quizá les falte una facilidad para hacer himnos y canciones que puedan ser famosas, pero en este grupo rebosa la calidad y la eficacia. Lo que hacen es precisamente lo que queremos oir, y nos lo dan con creces.

ROSE HILL DRIVE

ESTILO: Blues Rock

INFLUENCIAS: Blue Cheer, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience

MEJORES CANCIONES: Shakin´ all over, Cold Enough, Man on Fire, Showdown

COMENTARIO: Es muy difícil que conozcas a este grupo, pero sin duda son uno de los principales grupos de futuro. La heavy rock los tilda como el futuro del género, la Rolling Stone les incluyó en los "8 artistas que escuchar". Congenian muy bien con crítica, pero no con el público. Para los rockeros, son completos desconocidos, nadie los conoce, son grupos de "carretera y manta". Pero son muy jóvenes, son muy retros, y pueden tener un futuro. Solo necesitan distinguirse de los demás. Este año sale su segundo largo. A ver que nos espera.

AIRBOURNE

ESTILO: Hard Rock (de los puros, puros)

INFLUENCIAS: AC/DC, AC/DC, AC/DC, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin y más AC/DC.

MEJORES CANCIONES: Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast; Runnin´ Wild; Stand Up For Rock´n Roll, Diamond In The Rough.

COMENTARIO: Son AC/DC como veinteañeros, o por el estilo. Si no, no tiene explicación. Nacidos en Australia, en Melbourne, con 22 años ya han grabado un disco que hace 3 meses se ha empezado a comercializar por todo el mundo tras salir en Australia un año antes, composiciones hard rockeras con estribillos pegadizos a base de coros y un buen tratamiento de las guitarras... ¿¿¿¿no os suena todo???? Por suerte, logran sonar frescos, nuevos, y preparados para arrasar, pero las composiciones son muy parecidas a las de AC/DC. ¿Burda copia? De momento se están logrando quitar esa marca a base de rockear y rockear a su forma,que, bien, suena parecida a AC/DC, ¿pero no intentaba copiar Angus Young a Chuck Berry? Con el bombazo que han pegado, es un grupo muy a tener en cuenta que ya tiene nombre mundial y que estarán en el Wacken en Alemania, y también pasarán por España para el Kobetasonik. Como ya digo, se parecen mucho a AC/DC, pero estos hacen un hard rock (a veces cercano al heavy metal clásico, otro punto paralelo a AC/DC) más duro. Molan mucho, ojo.

Hay varios más, como Young Heart Attack, recién nacidos (pero que para mí no tienen ningún futuro), Stone Gods, las cenizas de The Darkness sin el genio Justin Hawkins (el mejor rockero que ha salido en tiempo, un gran frontman, un showman, un dios del espectáculo). Si a esto les añadimos a grupos que van a seguir durante mucho tiempo, como los White Stripes, los Strokes, The Hives, The Vines, BRMC, Placebo, los Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Monster Magnet, QOTSA, Angels & Airwaves (manda narices que Tom DeLonge, el cantante de Blink 182, sea el principal componente y compositor de esta pedazo banda), y muchos más tenemos, en esta etapa de transicción, una buena (aunque cueste reconocerlo) descendencia rockera, que hace el rock siga muy vivo y con muchas posibilidades de romper todos los esquemas de nuevo en un futuro próximo o muy próximo.

Cuando hablamos de Wolfmother hablamos de la banda que está resucitando el rock y la que todos los rockeros hemos depositado nuestras esperanzas, ya que, a pesar de que los componentes no son tan jovenes (rondan los 30) este grupo es el futuro del rock.

Su música es un claro canto a los 70, a esas geniales bandas como Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC y Pink Floyd, un estilo retro que suena novedoso y funciona, y queda como mucho más que un simple tributo, que como un simple homenaje a la música querida. Suena a muy buena música.

Bajo la batuta de Andrew Stockdale (vocalista y guitarra), y bajo el gran efecto de Chris Ross (bajo y sintetizador) y con la genial aportación del batería Myles Heskett, el grupo suena como un gran soplo de aire fresco. Más allá de su gran éxito, una de las mejores canciones de rock que se hayan compuesto en dos décadas, ese genial Woman, canción de casi 3 minutos con aires muy, muy Zeppelianos, directa, fuerte, agresiva, atrevida, con un solo de teclados muy interesante y con un riff a la vieja usanza.

Esa canción fue la estrella de un disco homónimo a la banda ya tratado en este blog que sin duda será un disco que se escuchará en las escuelas de música rock: es mucho más que un homenaje, al final, es un estilo propio, es un toque genial de la banda, es un acierto notable en composición y sin duda, es un sinfín de grandes temas, empezando por la misma Woman, pasando por Joker and The Thief, Dimension, Mind´s Eye, Love Train y mi favorita, White Unicorn.

White Unicorn es una pieza muy orientada al rock progresivo de Pink Floyd, Rush o Yes, con pinceladas de la principal influencia, Led Zeppelin, con ese toque de la banda tan especial que con sus geniales dedos adapta la música retro a los nuevos tiempos sin necesidad de pasar por la comercialidad.  No es la canción más famosa del grupo, pero una de las que más si. Forma parte del triángulo inicial genial del disco de Wolfmother, esas 3 canciones geniales que, si su nivel fuera el del todo el disco (y el disco es genial, imaginad el nivel) podría haber sido el mejor disco de la historia. Que 3 canciones más geniales, madre mía.

Además, han logrado ser un grupo con mucha fama y muchos fans, y han hecho algo que yo hace mucho tiempo no veía: que un grupo de rock moderno hiciera que sus fans hicieran el símbolo de los cuernos, ya solo dado para las viejas glorias y para el metal. Estos y The Darkness lo han conseguido.

Es tan buen disco el suyo que llevan 2 años viviendo de sus rentas, tan tranquilos, reapareciendo en superfestivales como el Rock Am Ring, el PinkPop o por el estilo, haciendo felices a miles de rockers. Se dice que son muy perfeccionistas, por eso tardaron tanto en sacar el primer disco en 2006. Pero, por suerte para el mundo de la música, se espera su tan ansiado segundo disco para finales de 2008 o principios de 2009. Les recibiremos con los brazos abiertos. Si ese segundo disco podría ser tan bueno como el anterior y tener un exitazo como Woman, no se sabe, pero si es así, estaríamos hablando de Wolfmother como uno de los grandes grupos de la historia del rock.  Todo eso si ese disco fuera así. ¿Lo lograrán?

Cuando hablamos del rock moderno, se nos viene a la cabeza el nombre de los Strokes o Arctic Monkeys, pero aunque muchos lo den por muerto, el rock está más vivo que nunca. Seguramente escriba un artículo mucho más amplio sobre este tema, pero por hoy me sirve para hablar del tema principal de esta entrada.

Al mismo ritmo de crecimiento de la sociedad y el mundo en general, crece la música. Hace 50 años sería estrafalario hablar de que de Suecia salen grandes artistas a nivel mundial, o que en Australia hay algo más que aborigenes y koalas. Hoy en día, de Suecia salen bandas como Mando Diao o The Hives, y de Australia salen autenticos grupazos como Jet, Wolfmother o .... The Vines, que son los que nos ocupan.

A pesar de lo que se pueda pensar, al contrario que Jet o Wolfmother, que tienen claras raices en el rock más duro de sus paisanos AC/DC, The Vines mezclan el mejor grunge de Nirvana con melodías modernas que rozan el indie más bailable. Por ponerles una etiqueta, se puede decir que son una banda de garage-rock que de la mano de su líder, Craigh Nicholls , nos trae una visión diferente del rock hecho en las antípodas.

Su trabajo más destacado es Highly Evolved (2002), con el que consiguieron la portada de la revista Rolling Stone y darse a conocer. Luego vinieron Winning Days (2004) y Vision Valley (2006), que fueron a cada cual más decepción en cuanto a ventas, pero no en cuanto a calidad musical. Para 2008 preparan nuevo disco, del que os informaremos detalladamente en masalladelsonido.

No me gusta hablar de la historia de los grupos, ni de anecdotas de los miembros...simplemente dar a conocer su música, que es la carta de presentación que nos entregan, así que os dejo con la que posiblemente sea su canción más conocida, y uno de los singles de su álbum de debut Highly Evolved...get free!!
