BlackBerry owners interested in syncing music from their iTunes library are now able to do so thanks to a new tool called Media Sync.

Using Media Sync "it’s incredibly easy to transfer the music you want to take with you."

Supported BlackBerry devices include the Pearl 8100, Curve 8300, or the 8800 running BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 or higher. On the computer side you'll need to be using a PC running the 32-bit version of either Windows XP or Vista (sorry, no Mac version)

La velocidad del sistema se logra gracias a varios ajustes, del registro, de los servicios y de los archivos del sistema. El consumo de memoria es normalmente entre un 45 y 60% del consumo de WindowsXP normal, por lo tanto tendras mas memoria libre.

Una imagen de mi escritorio en Ubuntu Linux con virtual box corriendo SuricataOS, realmente es muy rápido, ahora puedes ejecutar aplicaciones desde windows xp que corren muy rápido y no consumen demasiada memoria...se me ocurre que para desarrollar aplicaciones y probar en uno o ambos sistemas operativos a la vez y probar de inmediato la portabilidad de tus aplicaciones.

El consumo de memoria NO esta relacionado con el rendimiento general del sistema, por lo tanto aunque instales miles de programas o actives todos los servicios, y termine consumiendo 250MB de RAM la velocidad del sistema sera aun mayor que la velocidad de WindowsXP consumiendo 100MB, notaras esto al explorar carpetas, iniciar aplicaciones pesadas (Photoshop, 3DsMAX) o en juegos a pantalla completa.

Un ejemplo practico:
Windows Normal: Tu PC funciona a 300KM/h, le pones el norton antivirus y el office, luego de esto funciona a 200KM/h.
SuricataOS: La misma PC funciona a 350KM/h, le pones el Norton y el Office y luego funciona a 250KM/h

SuricataOS puede correr perfectamente bien en un procesador Pentium 1, asi como en los nuevos procesadores Core Duo.

Después de que descargues los archivos rar, descomprime y vas a obtener una imagen iso que puedes quemar a un cd o dvd y para esto puedes usar programas como Alcohol120%, AShampoo Burner Studio, Nero en Windows o k3b o la linea de comandos en GNU/Linux.

Cuando iniciamos sesión, hay veces que para algún usuario, en la pantalla de bienvenida nos aparece un mensaje del tipo "Tiene X mensajes sin leer". En esta sección podemos controlar este aspecto.

Para ello, tenemos la casilla titulada Show unread mail on Welcome screen, y si la tenemos marcada, se mostrará el mensaje en la pantalla de bievenida (desmarcarla para que no apareza el mensaje). También tenemos la opción Consider email abandoned after X days, donde podemos especificar el número de días tras los cuales un mensaje se consiederará abandonado.

En la sección Scope tenemos dos opciones:

- Apply setting to all user: si queremos que los cambios hechos se apliquen a todos los usuarios.

- Apply setting to this user only: si queremos que los cambios sólo sean para el usuario que en ese momento está usando las Tweak UI, es decir para el usuario logueado.

No, I want to raise an issue which must be relevant to many New Zealand households. This is the constant taunting and ridicule, the frustration of individual ambitions and pleasure, even the destruction of one's honest attempts at creativity which is a common experience for many of us. Its this sort of constant provocation which can cause people to 'lash out' - and for most of us there is no-one to turn to for help.

Even when the situation doesn't precipitate actual physical violence victims of this provocation can suffer emotional damage as a result of constant feelings of frustration - even rage.

Computer rage

I'm talking, of course, about rage resulting from technical provocation by some of today's household devices.

Who hasn't thrown their TV, video or DVD recorder remote across the room? How many of us have actually lashed out and physically attacked the TV set or recorder?

Even worse, in my experience, is the continual provocation of the home computer. How often do we lose information, carefully and painfully entered over a period, to a computer 'crash'? And there's no one to turn to. Has anyone tried to contact Microsoft for help with their operating system. At least at work there is the IT department. And if you have problems with your spouse you can get counselling. But with the home computer you are on your own.

The most recent straw which almost broke the camel's back for me was the latest Windows XP security update. These happen automatically - the problem is that this one automatically prevented any further contact with the internet. Restores to return to the pre-update setup were inevitably followed by re-installation of the update and re-isolation from the internet. No information was forthcoming from Microsoft - and my attempts to get online help (after each restore) was an exercise in circular frustration.

Boy, was I ready to 'lash out'. However, after a week I got a message from ZoneAlarm who produce my virus anf firewall security software: "Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000. "

OK, the updated version of  ZoneAlarm resolved the programme - but not before the experience had wrecked extreme emotional damage on me. I can no longer trust my operating system.

And I am that much closer to 'lashing out' when the next provocation occurs.

It could mean divorce

I'm seriously considering a divorce. I've been eyeing up an iMac lately. It look so smart. It responds much more quickly than my old system and it has a reputation of being more caring - not resorting to the constant taunting and provocations of my current operating system.

Still, I wonder if I'm doing the right thing. After all there is so much invested in my current relationship. Despite the provocations of WindowsXP I know how to use it and am aware of its problems. I'm not young and silly anymore. I know that a new relationship means risks. There will be a new learning curve. And I am sure that the iMac OS will have its own problems. I may be opening myself up to whole new set of provocations and emotional damage.

I need some counselling on this issue. But who is there out there who can be objective when it comes to such important relationships?

2. Lock Windows to protect computer
You can lock Windows to protect the computer when leaving the station easily by creating a shortcut with the path rundll32.exeuser32.dll, LockWorkStation. The Windows key + L is also a shortcut to this feature.

3. Edit sysoc.inf to list all software
To show all software that can be removed from your computer (including protected Windows services), you can manually edit (using notepad for example) the sysoc.inf file located in Windows\inf\. Just remove the word hide next to the software pack.
*Note* - use this at your own risk. Removing critical components of the system will make Windows instable.

4. Windows XP comes with IPv4 and IPv6
Windows XP comes both IPv4 and IPv6 support. To enable IPv6, you can install the protocols needed with the command "ipv6 install" in the command-prompt. Then type ipv6 /? to see the options. The installation will not remove the IPv4 protocols so your current configuration will still work.

5. Access Task Manager with shortcut
To access the Task Manager easier, you can make a shortcut that points to %windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe.

6. Stop treating ZIP files like Folders
If you don't want your Windows XP to treat ZIP files like folders, you can disable this component by running regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll at the command prompt or Run dialog. If you start missing it, you can enable it by typing regsvr32 zipfldr.dll.

7. Run program as diffrent user
You can run a program as a different user. Right click an application and select Run As command.

8. Switch users leaving applications opened
You can switch users leaving the applications opened too (*NOTE* use this only when needed since it could lead to system instability).
Go to Task Manager - processes and end the process explorer.exe. This will end only your session and not all applications. Then go to Applications tab, click New task and type runas /user:domainname\username explorer.exe. A password prompt will appear to login to the desired username. The user's session will start, with all your previously applications running.
I recommend to open first a command-line prompt and type runas /? to see all the options available.

9. Rename multiple files in Windows at once
Rename multiple files in Windows at once. Select them all, right click and select Rename. Enter the desired name. They will be renamed using what you specified, with a number in brackets to distinguish them.

10. Task kill feature in Windows
Windows has a task kill feature similar to Linux. Go to a command prompt and run the command tasklist to see running processes with PID numbers. Then type tskill <PID> to end the specific task. This forces an instant closing of the task.

11. Edit features with GPEDIT.MSC
You can edit many features by running gpedit.msc. You can add log on/log off scripts here and many features.

12. Edit accounts in the command prompt
You can edit accounts by running "control userpasswords2" at the command prompt.

13. Use systeminfo.exe to see System Information
You can use the systeminfo.exe command in the command prompt to see System Information, including all Windows updates and hotfixes.

14. Disable system services for maximum performance
There are system services that you can disable to free up the system's load. To access the interface that permits you to make changes to system's services, type services.msc and the command prompt.
This is a list of services that are *usually* useless and can be safely disabled.

15. Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD
If your system failes to start due to an error related to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot.

Having recently reinstalled Windows on a couple of different PC's I can tell you first hand it can be a pain getting your hands on the right driver for your sound card, video card, network card, etc., not to mention all the rebooting you'll be doing while installing them.

To save yourself some trouble after you've formatted your drive and it's too late to see what drivers you'll need, check out a program called DriverMax which can take care of everything for you.

Using DriverMax you'll be able to easily export a copy of the various drivers your Windows PC is using (to a drive you're not formatting, of course), then once you've formatted things and need your drivers again, install DriverMax and import your drivers back into your computer and you'll make sure you have the same drivers you started out with. Plus, you'll just need one reboot for all drivers that are imported instead potentially needing a different reboot for each driver you install.

I haven't used this program first hand so I can't say from experience how good/bad it is, but next time I reinstall Windows I'll definitely check it out.

Sure enough, there's a 'config' file that controls which options are available in the Add/Remove window.  See the file c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf (note that 'inf' is a hidden Windows folder).  Credit to this forum post.

Today's the day--Microsoft set June 30th as the deadline when PC makers will no longer be able to offer Windows XP except for low-cost UMPC's like the Asus Eee PC and MSI Wind.

Support for XP is a different story--Microsoft announced several days ago that they would be support XP through at least 2014 so you won't see it hit end of life anytime soon.

According to Microsoft, there just isn't enough customer demand for them to continue to offer XP and people will now be getting their very own copy of Windows Vista with a new PC purchase.

Please try and not get too excited.

Para recuperarse de la incapaz acceder al escritorio debido a la falta de control de la licencia de error tras la instalación de Windows XP SP3, hay varias soluciones disponibles. Si las soluciones sugeridas no funciona, pruebe una de las siguientes resoluciones para solucionar el error.

Arrancar a Modo Seguro (pulsando F8 durante el arranque inicial), luego copia el oembios.bi_ y expand.exe de la instalación de Windows XP CD (tanto localizar archivos en la carpeta i386) al disco duro local, como la unidad C: \. A continuación, abra una ventana de comandos (CMD), y ejecute el comando siguiente para expandir o desempaquetar el archivo comprimido:

While Windows XP prepares to leave desktop and traditional notebook computers and begin a new life on UMPC's (like the Asus Eee PC and MSI Wind), Microsoft has announced that they will be supporting the OS through at least the year 2014. This support will include security patches and critical updates.

This is a good time to remind everyone that June 30th will be the last day to buy a retail copy of Windows XP, so if you don't have it yet but want it better think about ordering it soon.

Bill Veghte, senior vice president at Microsoft, says "our ongoing support for Windows XP is the result of our recognition that people keep their Windows-based PCs for many years."

And that Windows Vista sucks (oops). Honestly, user satisfaction is around 33% according to the last figure I saw, so 67% or so of Vista users are satisfied.

It's nice that the majority of Vista users are satisfied, but to have so many people unhappy with the most important piece of software on their computer--the operating system--is bad.

Today’s post will show you how to take advantage of a feature already built in to Windows XP to address this issue: Compressed/.zip folders.

In this example, I have placed four types of documents on my desktop, and created two folders to hold those documents.  First, a “Regular” file folder.  Second, a .zip folder.   The purpose is to show the difference in file size between the two.  In addition, using a .zip file adds the advantage of being able to send multiple files in one attachment, versus 20 separate attachments as described above.

When to Zip:

If you have multiple file attachments, or need to send a large file that can be compressed.

How to Zip?

Create a .zip file as follows:

Step 1:

1. First, choose the folder where you want the .zip file.  In this example, I’ve placed the folder on my desktop.
2. Then, right click with your mouse and choose New | Compressed (zipped) folder.  You may have Winzip or some other .zip program installed, but the procedure is the same.
3. Name your folder.

Step 2

1. Locate the files you want to add to the .zip folder, and drag them in to that folder.
2. Open the .zip folder to see your compressed files.  Note that your original files remain unchanged.

Why to Zip:

Here are some things to consider for sending email attachments using a .zip file:

• Do I need to send multiple files as attachments?
• How big are the file(s) that I need to send?
• Can the .zip file make the file small enough to send (or will I need to send a disc)?
• Consider your audience: Will receiving a .zip file confuse my recipient when s/he expects a .pdf?

All in all, using .zip files is a great way to send multiple file attachments, or for compressing a large file to fit within email restrictions.  .zip files allow your recipients to open one folder and view all attachments, without having to open and save each individually.  In addition, the sender can zip up all the files into one file, and have one file to attach, rather than attaching 20 different attachments.  Used correctly, it can help you and your practice be more efficient.

Installing Windows from cd on a VirtualBox instance is really easy. However, I need an *specific* windows installation that can only be installed from a Windows PXE server at work. Sadly, the virtualbox open source edition delivered with Ubuntu is unable to do this. This is what I did:

1. Get virtualbox from here (choose binaries and not the OSE edition)

2. Install it (the name of the binary depends on you OS and version, I am running Ubuntu Hardy on x64). Answer positively to all the questions.

$ sudo dpkg -i /home/claudio/Desktop/virtualbox_1.6.2-31466_Ubuntu_hardy_amd64.deb

3. Configure your OS:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

$ sudo vi /etc/group
==> add your user to the vboxusers group

4. Create a bridge ethernet setup:

$ sudo apt-get install bridge-utils

$ sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces
=> add this:
auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports eth0

$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

$ sudo VBoxAddIF vbox0 claudio br0
=> use the username of the user running the Virtual Machine instead of my name.

5. Start VirtualBox (Applications - System Tools  - Sun xVM VirtualBox; type "VirtualBox &" in a console if not yet added to the menu).

6. Create a Windows virtual machine (follow the "New" Wizzard).

7. Select the new virtual machine, right click, select Settings. In General, second tab, enable the "Network" boot option. In Network, choose type "Host" and put vbox0 in the interface field.

8. Boot the VM and follow the PXE instructions (I had to type F12 to continue)

Wer diesen von MS anscheinend gewollten Störfaktor loswerden will, geht auf start -> ausführen und gib dort gpedit.msc ein um den Gruppenrichtlinieneditor zu starten.

Bei den Richtlinien für Lokale Computer -> Computerkonfiguration -> Administrative Vorlagen -> Windows-Komponenten -> Windows Update entweder die Option "Deaktivieren" auswählen oder die Anzahl der Nachfragen begrenzen. Dieser Tip funktioniert nur unter Windows XP Pro. Unter windows XP Home edition müsste erst der Gruppenrichtlinien Editor nachinstalliert werden. Eine Anleitung dazu gibt es bei winfaq.de

If you've been dragging your feet ordering a new computer from Dell with Windows XP, better hurry--June 30th is the final day Microsoft will allow XP to be sold by hardware manufacturers like Dell before they'll be forced to transition to Vista.

After June 18th, Dell will still allow you to order a certain machine with XP installed but they will charge a small fee.

XP isn't completely going away, but it will no longer be offered on standard computers and instead will begin its new live on UMPC's like the MSI Wind (among others).

Laptop Mag managed to get their hands on pricing for the Asus Eee PC 901 and 1000 notebooks for the US market.

The 901 will sell for $599 for either the Windows XP version with a 12GB SSD or a Linux version with a 20GB SSD

The 1000 will sell for $699 for the Windows XP or Linux version with a 40GB SSD and the 1000H will sell for $649 and use an 80GB hard drive instead of an SSD.

Specs aren't 100% final for the 1000 series so things could possibly change before launch.

navegar en el registro hasta la siguiente clave:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root

localizar todas las claves que empiecen asi $%& ya que son corruptas y
borrarlas para lo que tendreis que iniciar en modo seguro con f8 o sino no os
dejara borrarlas.

it was indeed corruption introduced into the registry by
the SP3 upgrade process itself. (Es de hecho una corrupcion en las entradas del registro por el proceso de actualización del sp3)

In my case it was located in:  (En mi caso fue localizado en:)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CCPROXY

All the invalid entries ( which for me all began with $%& ) had to be
deleted.  (Todas las invalidas entradas las cuales empiezan con $%& deben ser borradas)

Finding your currupted entries is not easy - but expand all sections in all
controlsets with \Enum\  to find them. Posts in other forums have never
produced corruption in the exact same registry tree/keys - so unfortuneatly
you will have to "look hard". Also deleting the bogus entries may not be as
easy as just "delete". You may need to modify the permisions on each entry.  (Encontrar las entradas corruptas no es facil, debe expandir todas las secciones en la clave controlsets con \enum\ encontradas. Mensajes en otros foros nunca han producido corrupción en la misma claves/subclave/entradas del registro. Se debera ver cuidadosamente. Esta tarea no es solo borrar, debes tener permisos para modificar estas entradas)

For a small amount of entries: (Para pocas entradas corruptas encontradas)
1) Rightclick and go to the permissions of the corrupt registry key (Click derecho en la carpeta o rama del registro)
2) add new permission for the administrator (Seleccionar Permisos y Ubicar el administrador)
3) give the administrator "full control" (Habilitar control total)
4) Reboot into Safe Mode (F8) (Reiniciar en Modo Seguro apretando F8 al iniciar)
5) run regedit and delete the offending keys (Ejecutar Regedit y Borrar las claves corruptas)

Many times we face problems while managing our files on a public computer. Due to which I discovered this method of creating an invisible folder, which can help us to a great extent. Let me tell you the method:

1. Right Click on say Desktop. And create a new folder.



2. Rename it like this ALT+0160(Press alt key on the keyboard and type 0160). This will generate an invisible character.



3. Now you will be having a folder without any name. So we now change its icon. Right Click on the folder->Properties->Customize->Change Icon. Select the shown icon. 



4. So at last you will get this.

After you have created the folder place it in some place which is not frequently accessed.

Note:

Have you ever tried to create a folder named 'con'. You can create it by using this method, i.e., type con after that type ALT+0160. And you are done. 

Those who are using laptops will face problem, when they press ALT+0160 nothing will happen. So try to locate fn key and press ALT+FN+MJOM(equivalent to 0160).

We already know almost everything there is to know about the MSI Wind, but today MSI is officially announcing it's launch.

In case you haven't been following it, the Wind is an Asus Eee PC alternative whose specs include:

• 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor
• 512MB of RAM for Linux version, 1GB for Windows version
• 80GB hard drive
• 3-cell battery for Linux version, 6-cell battery for Windows XP version
• 1.3 megapixel webcam

Laptop Magazine got their hands on the Windows version of the Wind and call it "the best all-around mini-notebook to date."

The found the pros of the 2.6 pound notebook to be:

• Relatively large 10-inch screen
• Fast boot time (34 seconds)
• Long battery life (over 5 hours)
• Conformable keyboard
• One-touch TurboDrive CPU overclocking

Not all is perfect, of course. They didn't care for the single-bar mouse, below-average wireless throughput and limited tech support with no toll-free number.

The pros, however, far outweigh the cons and they gave the Wind their editors choice award.

Look for the Windows XP model to ship on June 16th for $499 and the Linux version to ship later this summer for $399.

1. Format file system NTFS

1. Saat kita Akan menginstall Windows XP, hal pertama yang mesti kita lakukan adalah memformat Hardisk, gunakan file system NTFS. File sistem NTFS lebih cepat diakses dan scandisknya juga sangat cepat. Jangan gunakan FAT, kecuali Anda ingin bisa mengakses harddisk tersebut di windows 98. Pilih type Harddisk Ultra-133 atau serial ATA/SATA dg buffer 8-MB, Memory RAM minimal 512MB, Apabila format file system Anda menggunakan FAT32, Anda bisa mengconvertnya ke NTFS dengan cara : Klik Start > Run > ketik CMD,bila layar command sudah muncul di layar,ketik CONVERT C:/FS:NTFS.Catatan: Saat proses ini berlangsung, computer jangan di sela dan juga dalam keadaan bebas Virus.

2. Program startup

Saat kita menginstall Software Programs biasanya pembuat program menyertakan startup programnya agar bisa di akses atau di buka dengan cepat, Hal ini memang menguntungkan kita,karena program bisa di buka dengan cepat.Tapi bila Program tsb jarang kita buka atau hampir tidak pernah kita buka sama sekali,maka layanan ini bisa kita anggap mengganggu kecepatan komputer kita,kita bisa merasakan Loading lambat dll,kenapa begitu?.

Saat pertama kali komputer, kita nyalakan semua yang berada di startup program akan di loading oleh windows,sehingga memory computer kita akan berkurang.nah inilah salah satu yang membuat computer kita lemot.

Bagaimana cara mengatasi hal ini? nich caranya.

Untuk membuka startup Program, Caranya : START -> RUN, ketik msconfig, buka tab startup. Lepas centang program yang tidak anda kehendaki.Jangan kawatir cara ini aman atau tidak menggangu system kerja dasar windows.sisakan program-program yang menurut anda perlu di load oleh windows,seperti antivirus,Dload manager dll.

3. Window services

Ada dua cara untuk mengakses prosedur ini.yg pertama gunakan msconfig,yang kedua gunakan services.msc. Ini adalah service yang otomatis dijalankan windows pada saat startup. Ada beberapa service yang tidak perlu dan sebaiknya dimatikan, Antara lain yaitu:

§ Error Reporting Service. Saat sebuah aplikasi mengalami gagal loading atau cacat install atau tidak bisa di buka,biasanya windows akan berusaha menolong kita untuk memecahkan masalah kita dengan bantuan online,biasanya ada message window yang isinya “error occured ….” terus ada pilihan send atau don’t send. Itulah guna dari service ini. Kita biasanya memilih don’t send, jadi service ini sebaiknya dimatikan.

§ Automatic Update. Merupakan sebuah fasilitas update automatic dari windows.tapi apabila windows anda bajakan jangan coba-coba mengupdatenya.bisa di cap bajakan oleh mikrosoft.

§ Remote Desktop Help Session Manager. Digunakan untuk membantu Anda jika mengalami kesulitan atau error di windows, Anda bisa meminta teman Anda untuk mengakses komputer Anda dari jarak jauh (Internet). Jika Anda tidak pernah memakainya, service ini sebaiknya dimatikan.

§ Remote Registry. Untuk mengakses registry (file setting windows) dari jarak jauh. Sebaiknya dimatikan.

§ Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Ini hanya digunakan jika komputer Anda menggunakan UPS, yaitu alat yang berguna untuk menyimpan energi listrik ketika listrik padam. Matikan service ini jika Anda tidak menggunakan UPS.

§ Even Log.Windows mencatat semua log tentang apa yang terjadi di windows. Jika Anda tidak pernah menggunakan even log (ada di Control Panel -> Administratif Tool), maka service ini boleh dimatikan.

§ Windows Audio. Boleh dimatikan jika komputer Anda tanpa sound card.

4. Visual Effect

Untuk meminimalis Visual Effect dapat anda lakukan dengan cara : Buka Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System Properties. Buka tab Advanced. Klik pada Performance setting. Pada tab Visual effect pilih Adjust for Best Performance. Kemudian cek pada pilihan Use visual styles for windows and buttons agar tampilan windows Anda tetap seperti Windows XP.

5. Virtual Memory

Buka Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System Properties. Buka tab Advanced. Klik pada Performance setting. Klik tab Advanced. Pada bagian bawah ada pilihan Virtual Memory, klik pada tulisan Change. Gunakan custom size. Isi dengan:

Minimum : 1024 MB

Maximum : 2048 MB

6. Scan and Defragmen

Lakukan Scan minimal seminggu sekali dan defragmen hardisk minimal sebulan sekali secara teratur. Buka windows explorer, klik kanan pada Drive harddisk Anda, pilih Properties. Buka tab tools. Pilih error checking untuk menjalankan scan disk, dan pilih defragmentation untuk men-defragmen hardisk.

Demikian tips untuk membuat windows XP menjadi lebih cepat dan optimal, tanpa software tambahan. Semoga berguna.
