Today, I thought I'd just post a few international songs I've come across...

This is a great Russian song I stumbled across. No idea what it means, though I believe the title is "Music for a Film". And the music may be in Russian, but the band is based out of Oakland. :)

And this just rated enough on the bizarre meter that I had to play it. Hubba Bubba Balloons? Really? This might be a bubble gum commercial. I honestly can't tell.

Ich kann mich noch gut an den ersten Werner-Film erinnern. Damals gab es gerade mal zwei (!) echte Werner Bücher die auch noch nicht zielgruppenorientiert gestaltet waren und deshalb gut.

Der erste Werner-Film hatte eine Mischung aus Realfilm mit Brösel (dem Zeichner) als er selbst und drei Episoden (wohlgemerkt den besten) aus den Büchern. Die Realfilmsache war Mist aber der Zeichntrickteil der Hammer. Wenn man bedenkt, dass der Realfilmanteil wohl nur auf drängen der Filmfirma reinkam, dann hätte man damals schon das Unheil voraussehen müssen.

Aber man war benebelt. Von dem unglaublich köstlichen Bölkstoff, einem Bier, das in langhalsigen Ploppfalschen an der Kinokasse erstanden werden konnte und gar köstlich mundete. Es gab damals einige Gerüchte, Brösel habe sich mit "Flens" (was Werner in den Comics eigentlich trinkt) zerstritten und deshalb seine eigene Marke herausgebracht (Unheil...).

Dennoch, es schmeckte toll, war aber nachdem der Film nicht mehr in den Kinos lief, so gut wie nicht mehr zu erstehen.

Bis heute! Ich war dieser Tage in der Tankstelle meines Vertrauens und sah freudig erregt die kleine Pyramide Bölkstoff im Verkaufsraum aufgetürmt. Nach grob geschätzten 18 Jahren fast soetwas wie eine Offenbarung.

Aber, um nun eine lange Geschichte kurz zu schließen, es schmeckt natürlich nicht mehr wie damals. Mag auch daran liegen, dass die Flaschen nicht mehr langhalsig sind und sehr an ihr Original, das Flensburger, erinnern. 

Und wenn man dann genau hinsieht, erkennt man, dass es sich genau um jenes (lediglich umettiketierte) "Flens" handelt. Schade.

Da wird doch glatt mit meiner jenseits-der-30er-Sentimentalität gespielt!

The 33-year-old Murray has 31 goals and 42 assists for 73 points in 261 career NHL regular-season games with the Kings, Philadelphia, Carolina and Calgary. He also has appeared in 270 AHL games with Manchester, Philadelphia and Saint John, compiling 92 goals and 196 assists for 288 points. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, Murray has totaled 65 points in 75 games, winning a championship with the Flames in 2001, reaching the Finals in 1998 and advancing to the conference finals in 1996 and 2007.

Originally drafted by Calgary in 1993, Murray played in the AHL All-Star Game in 1996 and 1997.

Werner, 25, appeared in a total of 74 games with the Monarchs during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, collecting five goals and 31 assists for 36 points. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Gross Pointe Woods, Mich., split last season with Ilves Tampere in Finland and the DEG Metro Stars in Germany.

Werner spent four seasons (2001-05) at the University of Michigan before turning pro.

Leider regnet es ansonsten heute recht viel. Daher war unser Stop in St. Louis auch recht verregnet. Der dortige Arch ist aber auch bei diesem Wetter sehenswert. Mit 192m ueberragt er auch die Freiheitsstatur und den Freedom Obilisk in Washington (sagen aufjedenfall die Einwohner). Die Fahrt an die Spitze ist recht kurzweilig (10$, Eintrittskarten gib es einzeln am Schalter - online konnten wir nur "All Access" buchen):

Once again, the two dueling democratic candidates split primaries and came out fighting. Barack Obama has moved within 100 delegates of officially taking the nomination, but Clinton had another very lopsided victory in Kentucky. Like she has been right along, Hillary vows to stay in the race to the bitter end. She's not giving up and wants the country to know it. Clinton won at least 47 delegates in the two states and Obama won at least 32, according to an analysis of election returns by The Associated Press. So far Clinton has actually gained more delegates than Obama and trimmed his lead. All the Kentucky delegates were awarded, but there were still 24 to be allocated in Oregon, and Obama was in line for many of them. As the primary season comes to an end, it is beginning to appear that neither candidate will actually have a decisive amount for the convention. Though many, including Obama are claiming he has the nomination sewed up, there still could be some surprises. Somehow I keep feeling, his overconfidence is going to come back and bite him. There are some very strong calls for Clinton to stay in, particulary from the Women's voter base. They're taking out ads encouraging Clinton and trying to raise more money and support. This one certainly is not going to be over until the former First Lady sings. Or her husband plays sax.

CHILD ARRESTED FOR DRUNK DRIVING

 This story is just wrong on so many levels. An Arkansas pre-teen faces a drunken driving charge after he and a friend drank his parents' beer and crashed his stepfather's pickup truck. Sheriff Jimmy Dorney said the 12-year-old boy and his 10-year-old friend drove off in the truck May 4 to find a girl they met at a rodeo. Ok, drunk adolescents chasing an adolescent girl. This is seriously backwoods south cliche. The boys made it about 10 miles before the 12-year-old lost control of the truck. Dorney said the truck hit and jumped over a guardrail, sending it careening 50 feet down a steep hill into a forest. Clark James, who lives down the road from the crash site, said he answered the boys' banging at his front door with shotgun in hand about 2:30 a.m. "I opened the door and the first thing the boy said to me was, 'I'm drunk and I had a wreck,'" James said. "I looked at him and I thought 'You're kind of young to be out drinking. And you sure shouldn't be driving.'" Well that's a no brainer. No one was paying attention to these kids? Was there a NASCAR race somewhere?

NEW YORK RESTAURANT TOPS BURGER IN GOLD

 A good burger is one of my favorite things, but this is a bit over the top-pings. A Manhattan restaurant is offering a hamburger that costs $175 and is topped with gold. And I complain about a $6.00 burger. It's made of Kobe beef. It comes with black truffles, foie gras and Gruyere cheese in addition to gold flakes. What, no mayo? This shows you how gourmet I am, I've never heard of any of this crap other than gold, and I'm not about to eat that.  Wall Street Burger Shoppe co-owner Heather Tierney thinks of it as "a work of art." Tierney says the item attracts Wall Street types who down a few beers and then fork over $175 to show off to their friends. you'd think if they can afford that much for their burger, they'd have something to drink a little more stylish than a brew.

75 YEAR OLD ATTEMPTS MOUNT EVEREST

75-year-old Yuichiro Miura of Japan is trying to be the oldest man to ever reach the summit of Mount Everest. This is one guy who doesn't believe in growing old gracefully. He is accompanied by his son, Gota. Yuichiro is a professional skier who in 1970 became the first person to ski down Mount Everest using a parachute as a brake. Miura was into extreme sports before it was popular. He was diagnosed a few years ago with a heart arrhythmia. He says his greatest challenge is how his heart will hold up. Well, if he doesn't make it. I have no doubt that he going to give it his best shot. No rocking chairs for him!

URINAL VIDEO GAME FOR TWO

The Belgians have come up with a solution for what to do when you are using the urinal in the public bathroom. It's the urinal video game for two. Two beer fans out there have created a video game called "Place to Pee," in which players race down ski slopes and kill aliens while whizzing. Apparently how you aim is how you play the game. Sensors inside the urinal keeps your game tally. The game is the creation of software developer Werner Dupont and electrical engineer Bart Geraets, who had consumed considerable beer when the idea dawned on them. There's a revelation. They probably figured out the specs on a beer coaster. Now you don't have to experience that uncomfortable silence when standing next to someone in the bathroom. Play with them instead. See how well you can score.  Ladies, you don't have to feel left out. They've invented a special cup attachment just for you.

Australia's Department of Defence spent thousands of dollars on controversial development seminars, Australian media reported Wednesday. The seminars are run by a San Francisco, California-based training company called Landmark Education. The company evolved from Erhard Seminars Training "est", and has faced criticism regarding its techniques and its use of unpaid labor.

Australia's Defence Minister Warren Snowdon said that the government is in the process of reviewing Defence Department expenditures on career development. "We're in the process now of doing an audit, completely unrelated with anything to do with Landmark, which is being undertaken into learning and development to make sure that they meet our needs. ... We have to be very sure that the courses that people do undertake are relevant, appropriate and indeed in line with what community expectations might be," said Snowdon in an appearance on ABC Radio.

The Australian and Australia's ABC News reported that Landmark Education had been listed in France as a "possible cult" in the mid 1990s. When asked about this on ABC Radio, a spokeswoman for the company in the United States, Deborah Beroset, responded: "What happened in France was that a commission established by the French parliament issued a report in which they listed almost 200 organisations as being possible cults ... We were never contacted. We were inappropriately included in that list".

In a program which aired Wednesday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio program AM reported that Australia's Defence Department spent at least AUD12,270 of taxpayer funds to send government employees to Landmark Education courses. According to AM, the Defence Department said it does not appear that further funds have been sent to Landmark Education since 2004.

In a statement released by the Defence Department, the government stated: "A search of Defence records does not indicate exactly how many individuals attended courses with this training provider, however it is believed it was a small number of individuals. ... Defence has been unable to determine individual reasons for why groups within Defence choose this training provider."

AM also reported that the use of unpaid labor by Landmark Education "has attracted the attention of the US and French governments," and that some individuals in the mental health field have accused the company of brainwashing. When asked about the allegations by mental health experts that Landmark Education's techniques amounted to brainwashing, Deborah Beroset responded: "Well, there is absolutely no credence to that whatsoever."

In a March 9 article in the Herald Sun, Peter Rolfe reported that taxpayer money was used to send at least 37 police and government staff from Victoria, Australia to seminars run by Landmark Education. Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said that "Decisions on the appropriateness of staff attending courses by Landmark Education are made by individual managers who remain best-placed to assess the development needs of their staff," but State Liberal MP Murray Thompson told the Herald Sun that the funds should have been put towards fighting crime. Apple Inc., Reebok and Mercedes-Benz have sent employees to Landmark Education seminars, according to a spokeswoman for Landmark.

In October 2006, Landmark Education took legal action against Google, YouTube, the Internet Archive and a website owner in Queensland, Australia in attempts to remove criticism of its products from the Internet. The company sought a subpoena under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in an attempt to discover the identity of an anonymous critic who uploaded a 2004 French documentary of the Landmark Forum to the Internet. "Voyage au pays des nouveaux gourous" (Voyage to the Land of the New Gurus) was produced by Pièces à Conviction, a French investigative journalism news program. The Electronic Frontier Foundation represented the anonymous critic and the Internet Archive, and Landmark withdrew its subpoena in November 2006 in exchange for a promise from the anonymous critic not to repost the video.

Landmark Education is descended from Erhard Seminars Training, also called "est", which was founded by Werner Erhard. est began in 1971, and Erhard's company Werner Erhard and Associates repackaged the course as "The Forum" in 1985. Associates of Erhard bought the license to his "technology" and incorporated Landmark Education in California in 1991.

Fresh snow in my yard before sunrise 03/29/08

Off to Deception Pass again this morning for a paddle on a fine Spring Day. Well that was the plan. It is Spring right? I woke up this morning to fresh snow in my yard. Well a little snow wasn't going to stop me so off I went. A little slippery roadway slowed me down a little, but I still made it in time to meet a friend for a great day at the Pass. The current was mild today (5.13 max ebb) with minimal wind. Perfect conditions to shake the rust off after being away from the rough conditions for awhile. Not another boater in sight. It was very peaceful having this wonderful place to ourselves.

We took our time paddling along the shore and I saw an arch that I have never noticed before. It looks like if the tide were high enough one could paddle all the way through. I think it is pretty cool that every time I go back I see something new.

Although the current was predicted at 5.13 it didn't really appear to be that strong. I feel kind of crazy for feeling this way, but I wish the conditions were a bit stronger. It was hard to play in the current and do eddy line peel outs since the current wasn't moving enough.

We had a bit of everything today. The waves stacked up with the wind opposing the current allowing us to do a little bit of surfing. Then a short while later the wind completely reversed making the water absolutely glassy calm. We had rain, sleet, snow, and at the end sun. A little bit of rolling practice at the end in Bowman Bay which just made me feel like I chugged a Slurpee giving me a massive brain freeze. I nailed several offside rolls. My new Werner Ikelos was wonderful. I love this paddle!

Many great plans were made for future paddles. We hope to head back to Deception many times this year to really refine our rough water skills. We want to work on rescue practice amongst the currents. Nothing beats real world experience. This will make us far better than any lake practice session could.

The only downer of the day other than the cold snow was that the parks were nice enough to raise the launch fee. I still don't understand why kayakers have to pay a boat launch fee when most of us don't even use the boat ramp, but instead use the beach itself.
I've ranted about that before so I'll shut about that for now.

I love that this wonderful place is within an hour of my home. I feel very fortunate to have such world class paddling so close. A great reward for many hours of overtime I've put in lately at work.
