I foresee a little disjointed stream of consciousness coming up... I apologize for that, but my head is still spinning a little from the weekend.

The reality set in for me last night that no matter how much we wish it, Champ Car is gone, IndyCar is what's left, and I'm afraid it's going to be up to us to make it worth watching and supporting and participating in on any given weekend. Just how we are going to make that happen... well, I haven't quite figured that part out yet.

See, this weekend was my first personal foray onto the IndyCar side of the fence. I don't know how I feel about it yet really. It's not that it was "bad" per say, in fact aspects of it were really quite good, but it is now a very "different" experience. Heck, even my self imposed assignment this weekend was more on the photography side of things rather than writing, which was fun and challenging and frustrating and fun... LOL. I wanted to know just how easy or hard what I expected of my photography team really was. I discovered it wasn't so hard after all with a little pre-planning... but I digress...

There is something lacking. I don't know how to explain it. I really, honestly, don't. I just know that the buzz, the adrenaline, the excited banter, the rushing to get to the track, it's all gone. Or at least not where it should be, or where I could find it.
But why?

Well, first the obvious.... the product that facilitated it (for myself and many others) is gone. In it's place a lumpy, foul smelling, whiny, sluggish impression of a race car.

Truthfully I kinda got used to the sound and look of the cars as the weekend went on. The hump, while clumsy, isn't as pronounced in person, but only serves to highlight how slow the cars look on track coming down the front stretch. The giant wings however are ridiculous. I guess eventually, when I stop looking at pictures and video of CART/Champ Car, I'll get more used to them. I will never, however, get used to the smell. Seriously. Ethanol=stinky. Period. It completely ruined my traditional "first moment" of the weekend of standing beside the car when it fires up and burns out of the pits. I reeled back in disgust when I realized the heady nectar of methanol had been replaced with something that smells like the fart of a large man who ate a jumbo bucket of popcorn and a turkey sandwich the night before.

****************

It's surreal in a way. I'm at the track, doing my usual track routine, but nothing is "usual" and the faces staring back at me more often than not are strangers. Were my Aussie bud not in the media centre with me, I would have been hard pressed to have a conversation with anyone. I was also "orphaned" this weekend. Without team. Without Country really. While I secretly (ok... not so secretly...) rooted for my little buddy EJ Viso. No really, he is LITTLE! (of course compared to me, most drivers are... ) Built like a brick shithouse though and beautiful eyes... if only he was about 2-3 ft taller... and 10yrs older...

What was I talking about again?

Oh ya, I was essentially homeless this weekend. While I had offers of welcome mats in a few pitboxes, it just wasn't the same. I wandered much more than I normally would have and spread my "good luck today" vibes over a few teams, rather than my usual one.

Now I sit at my computer and and look at download pictures of Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske and Tony George and it all seems somehow... normal.

It was good to catch up with my series friends from Champ Car. I think they really enjoyed seeing a familiar face and having a sympathetic ear to bend and vent to. It's funny to talk to people from both sides. While those that were there prior to "unification" believe that all is rosy and cozy in the paddock, those that came over after have a decidedly different view of paddock garage life in IndyCar land. Miserable doesn't even begin to cover it.

Oddly it was just as good to catch up with "the enemy" for lack of a better description. I was grinning from ear to ear sitting up by the boys during the press conference post race. Tony and Darren were always two of my faves. I've missed their humour. It was fun to be joking around with EMauk again all weekend. The quips, the pokes, the "evil eye" ... We had a bit of a love/hate relationship while he was at Champ Car. He loved to make me feel unworthy, I thought he hated me. Love/hate... see? Hehehe... In hindsight I realize why and where the situation unfolded from, but now things are cool. He's a great guy and it's nice to see him happy and seeing some success this weekend. (yay RHR! Thanks for the cap btw! I'll continue to wear it proudly)

It was equally good to put faces to the names of the IndyCar peeps. All were very friendly and accommodating. Somehow I guess I subconsciously expected otherwise. Like everyone on that side of the fence should somehow have horns and green skin and such. But they were lovely and welcoming and in one case heroic. (a big HUGE shout out to the team of IndyCar sanctioned photogs who recovered my "lost" images late Sunday, to the tune of the 200 or so I shot of the final moments of the race and the podium... oops! and a big thank you to Ron McQueeny for being uber cool too) I also met and spoke with Security Chief Charles! (shout out to Pressdog!) I told SCC that he was a "legend" in my circle (out here in blogland) and snapped a few quick pics. (very good looking man in person.. dayum... and you really really sense that you don't want to get on his bad side, cause I think he could turn from sexy to scary in the blink of an eye... just sayin is all) I wish a few of my fellow bloggers had been around this weekend. It would have been nice to hoist a couple and shoot the shit. ( Belle Isle for sure boys, others are possible... so lets try to make it happen)

****************

Probably the funniest most surreal moment of the weekend came on the starting grid. I was wandering around just as the anthems were beginning, and as it is understood to be proper to do as a photographer on the grid, I joined the crew line of the closest team. Well my friends, I had, in a cruel sense of irony, landed at Vision. So there I am, standing beside old chum Pat Caporali (with whom I had been catching up with and thus the reason I was stopped at that particular grid box) and a few shoulders over... Tony George himself. "Public enemy #1". Perhaps it was only fitting and the universes way of equalizing my fraternizing with the enemy ways, as I had spent the better portion of the afternoon chatting and tooling around on a golf cart with Kevin Kalkhoven. "Public enemy #2"

At least when it comes to offending people with my wicked ways, I'm an equal opportunity offender. Guess I should, in the interest of full disclosure admit to shaking hands with the lesser Andretti as well and thanking him for saving my home race... he actually smiled too! (I snapped a pic as proof!)

Bottom line of course is that all of these men are, for all intents and purposes, normal human beings, who happen to be race team owners, who laugh, joke, and break bread with family and friends, who strive for success, and get angry and disappointed at failure, and who have giant targets on their backs painted by people who either don't know any better, or could and would never step into their shoes to incur that level of ignorant wrath and vitriol hurled their way.

Of course having said all that I'm sure I've only served to secure my title as "public enemy #3. *shrug* (not that that would be unfamiliar territory... ;) )

****************

To look around , as an ignorant bystander, you would think the entire fanbase consists of Penske and Danica fans. (she's a whole other blog entry unto herself)

Of course the deluge of "Team Penske" hat and back tote wearing "fans" are folks who won the cigarette lotto. The sea of red hats and bags was alarmingly prevalent, and made me chuckle to myself throughout the day on Sunday. (see that's when most arrive) Up until then I thought people were exaggerating.

Those that aren't in the red hat/bag brigade are sporting Danicawear. Made up mostly of lascivious and sadly deluded men who are fulfilling their sports illustrated fantasies, and misguided families who have been force fed "role model girl racer Danica" by the ignorant mainstream media, and are now outfitting their impressionable little girls in black and blue. What they soon realize however is that they have just purchased "bitchy black haired Barbie" and their little girls are going to start behaving like petulant sows, and pout and stomp (and possibly face hit and run charges in the future) emulating American open wheel's media darling.

and on that note... I will end part 1, allow y'all to digest and comment or throw things or delete your bookmarks...

part 2 after I get some sleep. (the 3 hrs sleep in 48hrs has just hit me like an AGR driver er... brickwall

http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/olson-requiem-for-a-dog-house/

I have to hand it to Jeff Olson. The minute you think he's out of dumb ideas for bitching about things, he comes up with a new, even more creative way of looking like a doofus.

His latest missive bemoans the fact that Watkins Glen International has built a new, modern media center with all of the conveniences. His job, apparently, has become harder because he has to enjoy climate control, state of the art timing and scoring displays, lightning fast Internet connectivity for rapid story and photo posting, and so forth.

Hunh-whaaaaaah?

It took me a while before I figured out his true motive. He wants to maintain his image of a Hemingway-esque, grizzled, comfort-disdaining media MacGyver who needs chaos and primitive conditions in order to be as productive as possible. How, after all, can he be a man's man if he doesn't have to clean sweat drops off of his laptop keys or spend hours digging grit out of his cameras? He appears to be afraid that, if he is pampered with modern amenities, he might be discovered to be just another ordinary schmoe who types for a living - a guy without anecdotes he can use to impress people around him ("Man! I had to file my story by smoke signal!...").

What a bummer for him.

Me, I haven't seen the new WGI media center, but it sounds awesome. Unlike Jeff, I believe that anything that helps me do my job faster, more efficiently, and with less wasted time is a thing to be savored, not sneered at. If Jeff Olson can't appreciate an ergonomic chair and climate control after working outside, then he obviously hasn't been working hard enough.

The whole rant is a joke. It's full of self-congratulatory preening and misplaced ego (and comes complete with an obligatory dig at NASCAR beat writers, a Jeff Olson staple). And it's further proof that there's something fundamentally wrong with the motorsports media. Guys like Olson want to come across as tough, hard-bitten veteran journalists who are willing to brave harsh conditions to wrest a great story from the clutches of a hostile environment... Indiana Jones of the laptop set, in other words. What a laugher. Racing journalism is one of the cushiest gigs in the media if you ask me. The relationships are borderline incestuous (read any of Jeff's IRL columns for proof) and the hardest thing these guys have to do is ask a question of a driver that might lose them beer privileges with a race team.

I'd like to see how disdainful Olson would be of comfort and convenience if he were to be embedded with an Army platoon in Iraq for a week. Maybe that's duty that Olson should request - the people he'd be interviewing would be actual heroes and he'd have all of the hardscrabble, vermin-ridden, danger-laced experience he pines for.

Until then, Jeff, I'd suggest you don't wear a fedora you didn't earn. Me, I'll take a new media center that saves me time and helps me be efficient. After all, I do get paid for working... not camping.

I'm thinking I should have posted something between June 24th and now, but somehow, for some reason, didn't. Partially because some of what I've been discussing offline is "off the record" and "between you and I" (which is super secret off the record) and therefore not blog worthy. Well, I mean it's worthy.... but not blog approved shall we say.

Mostly though it's because there is just something... missing.

I'm feeling very disconnected from this sport that I love. Like the step-child, forced into a new family, who just doesn't quite fit in. I spent so many months trying to convince everyone else to give this thing a shot, but as my spirit begins to fade, no one has taken on that role for me. So here I sit, mid season, disillusioned, disappointed, disapproving and slightly disheveled. ( that last one's the new job taking it's toll on me)

It's the Thursday of race week. My race week. The week I lose sleep over every year. The week my non-gearhead friends know not to expect a return phone call. I should be beside myself, giddy with anticipation of friends and coworkers descending upon my fair city for a week of auto racing splendor. I should be grinning like a cheshire cat each time I see a commercial or hear a newscastor mention the Grand Prix of Toronto. I should be sitting at a downtown bar having a heated discussion with my racing buddies about the in's and out's of the series and teams and drivers.

Only my racing buddies aren't here. The bars are ghost towns. There is nary a checkered banner or poster of a race car anywhere. The start/finish line is faded and scuffed, yet still there, taunting... a painful reminder of all that we've lost. Oh sure, there will be a race here next year... but it will never be same.

I'm sangry. I'm Angrad. I'm the perfect combination of angry and sad. Instead of the cosmopolitan, fast paced, action packed, world class event I'm used to, I'm instead driving into the middle of upper New York cottage country in some desperate attempt to fill the void. Now I'm sure it's a perfectly lovely place. And a perfectly lovely track. But... *sigh*

I have such mixed feelings going into the weekend. On the one hand I'm so looking forward to catching up with my chums. *waves to my soon to be roomie from Australia!* On the other hand, I feel like I'm being lead to the firing squad. (dramatic much??) But seriously, for the first time, ever, I am "without team" or driver. My weekends consist of interviews, writing and mostly standing in PT's pits whenever he's on track. Well, he's not on track... anywhere! (don't even get me started again...) A fact that hits' me in little waves as I prepare for my weekend. Every piece of racing gear I own is either Champ Car or Forsythe or covered in Monster logos. So this weekend, I'm going with basic black. Kind of fitting as I feel as though I'm in mourning.

I HATE THIS! I hate feeling this way! I hate the disparity. I hate the car. I hate the bullshit, media hyped "danicamania". I hate that I really couldn't give a shit who is in the chase for the championship because I have zero connection with anyone in the hunt. I hate the blank, despondent faces of the transitioning drivers staring at me from my television every week, because they're mirroring mine. I hate that the fall out has all but destroyed the Atlantic series. I hate that I'm filled with so much... hate. *exhale*

Ok... that's out of my system... figured I better purge all of that from my brain before I walk into the media centre on Friday.

I'm going to try to keep an open mind. Bear with me though as I am about to attend my first ever IRL event. Just typing that made my skin crawl a bit. See it's one thing to sit and write about it as "media". I detach myself from it in those cases. I've a job to do, and I do it. But underneath the media credential is a fan. A CART/Champ Car fan. A fan who fought for and supported and stood up for and was ultimately let down by not just a "racing series" but an ideal. A dream, a hope, a philosophy.

Believe me, I want to be excited again. I want to be giddy with anticipation. I want to get chills when the cars fire up and peel out of the pits. I want to cheer on and support a team and a driver. I want to believe that there is a real future to look forward too and not just some smoke and mirrors version of open wheel. I look forward to the day when I can look at this series and American open wheel as more than the consolation prize that was behind door number 2.

Here I am with GP 1636, at Watkins Glen, http://www.theglen.com/forum/index.cfm, earlier this year for a three day on-track event with Trackmasters. There were quite a few - around 12 - MINI Coopers attending the event on Saturday and Sunday, due to the efforts of "Shoe", aka "Lord of the Flies" on nemini.org. This is in the inner loop, or the Bus Stop area on the track, a high speed chicane following a very long straight away, and just before a long, sweeping, off-camber and falling elevation right hand turn going into the "boot" part of the track.

This was a great weekend with very good instruction, and a trill to get back on a track that was always one of my favorites! Thank you, uptick, for the fine photo!

This is my GP - #1636, whose number this blog is dedicated to. For the first time in about 15 years, I was on track, at speed, in April of 2007 at Lime Rock Park, the famed "Road Racing Center of the East" (http://www.limerock.com). This event was organized by SCDA - Sports Car Driving Association (http://www.scda1.com/), who ran a very smooth high speed driving experience.

It was great fun, although I was nervous and constantly looking in my mirrors the first few sessions, by the end of the day, I was feeling quite comfortable once again.

This year, in May of 2008, I went to a three day event at Watkins Glen, run by Trackmasters (https://www.trackmasters.com/Page.asp?Script=1). It included exposure to many different instructors, luckily for me, and a lot of track time. The classroom experience was outstanding, featuring a well know chief instructor, Tony Funicello, who is also in charge of instruction for the Ferrari Club of America as well as the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, NY (http://www.monticellomotorclub.com/?gclid=CMPmpLbY25MCFQQcHgodr3M-ZA).
The quality of the instruction was top tier, with attention to everything a driver needs to be aware of, from the proper seating position and safety gear, the lines of course, looking ahead down the track, flagger stations and numerous other little but important things.

I am eager to drive again on the repaved Lime Rock.

18th of April - Jackie Stewart scores the first ever win for the Tyrrell marque at the 1971 Spanish Grand Prix. It was only the fifth race Tyrrell entered with its own 001 chassis and another seven wins would follow that year, a total seven by Stewart and one by François Cevert. All this success would culminate in Team Tyrrell winning the Constructors' World Championship in its first full season in Formula 1 with its own car.

A test driver for British-American Racing since 2000, “Ant” Davidson got his break in Formula 1 when the Minardi team decided to drop Alex Yoong for a couple of races. He’s debut came at the Hungarian GP and despite showing a solid job he had no other options than remaining BAR’s test driver up until 2005. He got a chance to race for BAR at the 2005 Malaysian GP when Takuma Sato had to withdraw because of illness. The car lasted just a couple of laps. Davidson stayed on as a tester when Honda took over the team in 2006 and his loyalty with Honda was finally rewarded with a race drive with Super Aguri F1 in 2007 and 2008.

Bob Drake was a privateer driver and automobile restorer who used to race Aston Martin, Cooper sports car and, more famously, a Type 61 Birdcage Maserati. He gained some prestige by finishing 2nd in the 1960 Riverside Grand Prix driving an Ol' Yaller Mk.II.

Jochen Rindt’s breakthrough came by beating the likes of Graham Hill, Jim Clark and Denny Hulme in the 1964 London Trophy for Formula 2 cars at Crystal Palace and got him a three-year-contract with the Cooper Formula 1 works team. But it remained a winless association and so, in 1968, Jochen switched to the Brabham-Repco team. But yet again his season was blighted by technical problems. As a result, for 1969 he moved to Colin Chapman's Lotus team, effectively assuming the mantle of the late Jim Clark. Rindt stormed to his first GP win in the US race at the end of 1969 then started his '70 Championship charge with a dramatic last corner win at Monaco. Thereafter armed with the sensational Lotus 72, he won four more Grands Prix before being killed in practice for the Italian race at Monza becoming motor racing's first posthumous World Champion.

He suffered with team mates like Mansell, Senna and Patrese, much more agressive on track and quite political this side of the pit wall. If he still were with us, he'd commemorate his 50th birthday today. He was born 26/03/1958 in Rome, Italy, and died in an accident while testing the radical and problematic Brabham BT55 at the Paul Ricard track.

Elio de Angelis' name ended up in a number of Formula 1 team bosses' notebooks after finishing second to Didier Pironi in the 1977 Monaco F3 Grand Prix. His only 4th car race ever! With further wins that year at Monza and Misano allowed him to win the Italian F3 title at his first attempt. That year he also took part in some Formula 2 races with Giancarlo Minardi's Scuderia Everest and led his first race.

In 1978 he raced in F2 with a Ferrari-engined Chevron B42 of Scuderia Everest. But the car was uncompetitive and after some disappointing results De Angelis decided to step and haveanother go in F3, eyeing a win in the - at the time - prestigious Monaco-F3 GP. He duly accomplished this feat and, as a result, got an offer to test for the Shadow F1 team in September that year.

Signing the deal with Shadow, his father paying the bills, the 20-year-old got rid of his reputation of being a pay-driver very quickly. Colin Chapman signed him to join Mario Andretti at Team Essex-Lotus and already in his second race with the team, he finished 2nd in Brazil. He did not score again until the Austrian GP in the summer but was then 4th at Monza and Watkins Glen.

His first Grand Prix victory came at the 1982 Austrian GP, finishing just ahead of Keke Rosberg's Williams. It was one of the closest finishes in history, the last time Colin Chapman would thow his cap up in the air and the end of the winning ways of Cosworth V8s. Althoug win-less, 1984 would be his best season, finishing 3td in the final standings. In 1985 he scored another victory after Alain Prost was disqualified at Imola. By now however Ayrton Senna had joined Lotus and it was clear that if De Angelis wanted to stay he would have to do so as the number two.

In 1986 he moved to Brabham and was joined by Riccardo Patrese. The team ran the unusual BMW-engined BT55, a car so flat that it was known as "the skateboard" and it was while testing this on 14th of May at Paul Ricard that he was killed when a rear wing failed, the car careered through the fences and caught fire. De Angelis had to be rescued by Alan Jones and Nigel Mansell, also testing in Le Castellet that day, and the Brabham mechanics. He died early next morning in a hospital in Marseille as a consequence of the symptoms of asfixiation due to the inhaled smoke.
