What's Better - Fruity Loops, Reason, Logic Pro Or Pro Tools

Music Production Software is the first thing a new producer is looking for, it allows the producer to create music. The question i hear the most is what Music Production Software is the best? Fruity Loops (FL Studio), Reason, Logic Pro or Protools.

Fruity Loops

Fruity Loops is a great piece of software used from beginner producers to advanced producers. It's rate highly due to the VST's you can add, Fruity Loops doesn't just stay within itself.. You can add so many things to it to make it a powerful music production workshop. Most professionals frown at fruity loops but believe me a hit record is produced in fruity loops everyday. Reason

Reason is properly my favourite because every single sample included in the software is perfect. Reason is normally used by producers that already have an idea of how to make music and advanced producers. The sound quality you can get out of reason is top notch and ready for radio play, it is recommended however you have to stay within reason. You cannot add VST's and Plugins, however you can add samples to NNXT and Redrum. Below is a website where you can find tutorials on how to use Reason.

Logic Pro

Logic Pro is properly the most used music production software by Apple. It is used in almost every single record studio, it is the music industry standard piece of software. Saying that it is not the easiest to learn and master but the results are amazing. Logic allows you to produce music, add vocals and use VST's and plug ins all within one single session so you don't have to use multiple pieces of software to create a full track. Below is a website where you can find tutorials on how to use Logic Pro.

Pro Tools

Pro Tools is like Logic Pro. Industry standard. Pro Tools is normally used by producers that use instruments and hardware that require live recording to get sounds into the song. Pro Tools allows you to also like Logic do everything within one program, supports almost everything you throw at it. It is the worlds best but it also comes at a price and if you can afford it check it out, however don't buy it for the name and expect to make hits. Using Effects and Effect inserts

No matter how fast your PC is or how much RAM you have at some point you are going to hit the wall and your PC will run out of steam. There are a few ways to avoid this or at least manage the situation.

Effect inserts - if you have a single track that needs some specific attention like and EQ or vocal correction plugin like Melodyne then go ahead and insert it directly on that track. This type of situation is when you wnat to use your track inserts, when you really need/want to add an effect to a specific track and have no intention or applying the effect to other tracks.

Effect sends - Let’s say you have 3 tracks of backing vocals. Each track was recorded in a separate take in a pretty dead acoustic environment. Chances are you want the 3 tracks to sound like they are in the same environment to the listener. To accomplish this you might be tempted to insert a reverb on each of the three individual tracks. Then set each reverb’s settings to match the others. There is nothing wrong with this approach but you will be using up CPU cycles that you may want elsewhere.

Instead, try routing each of the three tracks to a single bus. Whether you have Fruity Loops, SONAR or Pro Tools M-Powered you will have some sort of bussing matrix inside the program. Once the tracks are all going to one place (the new bus) you can add a single reverb that will affect all three tracks. For vocals, drums and even guitars this is a great technique as your overdubbed material will fit into the acoustic space you have created with your plugins. Of course this is a suggestion and not a steadfast rule. You may find that your projects require a different approach.
So next time you are about to patch a plugin on a track ask yourself if you would be better patching it to a bus. The results will be more control over your tracks and better performance from your PC.

This is another single synth track, this time using Oatmeal. There is just a single breakbeat low in the mix (played solo at one point), otherwise it's all from this synth.

Not sure what I think about this one, it's certainly flexible.. and I think there is certainly a lot more in there than I got out of it... but I didn't really warm to the sound.. Then again I think that may be partly due to the style of track I went for, and I might try the exercise again in the future with this one, and a different style of music.

Improve Your Music Through Restraint

Some time ago I went plugin happy. Actually it was more plugin mad. I trolled through sites like VST Planet and Audio Mastermind searching for the elusive plugin that would make my recordings sparkle. Just the faint promise of breathing life into the guitars, or polishing the vocals was enough to sell me. Soon my plugin folder was awash with oddly named effects that rarely did anything discernible. Most I never use, but I was comforted by the thought that I could if I wanted to.

The tyranny of choice. That’s what it comes down to. I played around in a local music shop with a Line6 Pod and was struck by the number of combinations available. With 32 amps and 60+ effects that is over 1920 distinct combinations. It would take quite a while to plough through them all. Pretty soon you’re not playing, but rather playing around, trying to settle on the right sound.

If I had to offer advice to those who are looking to jump into the effect market to tweak their music it would be this: Think of how you want to sound first, then limit your choices to put you in that direction. Good recording and good production may dupe people briefly into liking what is otherwise flat material. One can spend great amounts of time getting the right sound to liven up that which is flawed by bad playing, recording, composition, expression, or whatever. The audience is infinitely more forgiving of sonically imperfect experiences than we are apt to believe, provided the performer can entertain that is.

So forget the giant multi-effect boxes with their plethora of distraction. Instead polish what you have. Learn to compose a song that will stand on its own, without the aid of high production value. Learn how to perform in a way that is expressive without the use of an expression pedal. You will waste less time flipping through presets and twisting knobs, focusing so intently on the quality of your sound, and will spend more time focusing on the quality of your music.

Or like Bambushka said in the Community Forums: "The best Reverb and multieffect plugin available on the market. It's a must have!"

It's a commercial (€59, $79) Multi-Effect (FX) plugin and has 4 modular effect slots, which to load different effects in.
