Das Problem ist, dass Fedora8 das letzte Fedora mit Xen Dom0 Support ist und dieses ja nach Release von F10 als bald seinen "end-of-life" entgegen fiebert.

Ergo haben wir kein Fedora mehr das Xen selbst booten kann. Auf der Fedora-devel glaubt man daran, dass vor dem Kernel 2.6.28 realistisch nicht damit zu rechnen ist. Hier bei geht es darum, dass die Kernelentwickler eine Schnittstelle zwischen Kernel und egal welcher  (darunter liegender) Virtualisierung eingebaut haben. Diese "paravirtOPS" genannte Schnittstelle wird in Xen DomU unter F9 und auch F10 benutzt. Problem ist das hier einige Patches für DomU X86_64 Support und dem i386 Dom0 Support beißen. Außerdem müssen einige syscalls bzw. ehemaligen Hypecalls eben auch auf die "paravirtOPS friendly" Arbeit umgeschrieben werden. Für den DMA-Code ist dies wohl schon geschehen.

Es wurde auf der Fedora-Xen ML auch nicht anders beschrieben, als das es vielleicht nicht erst, aber kurz bevor Linus die Xen Patches einbaut, auch Fedora seinen Dom0 Support zurück erhält. Wohlgemerkt es wird hier derzeit nur über eine i386 Dom0 geredet. Die x86_64 Dom0 Arbeiten sind noch nicht mal angedacht.

Da ich hin und wieder einen echten Internet Explorer zum Gruseln zum Testen benötige, ist eine virtuelle Maschine natürlich ein naheliegender Gedanke. Aber weder Parallels, VMWare noch Q konnten mich überzeugen. Insbesondere Parallels hat mich mit regelmäßigen Abstürzen und hohem Ressourcenbedarf in die Verzweiflung getrieben... Nun hat mich VirtualBox mit dem Thema Virtualisierung wieder versöhnt.

Von der Bedienung unterscheidet sich VirtualBox kaum von seinen kommerziellen Nachbarn. Eine virtuelles System ist mittels Installations-Assistenten schnell angelegt: man erzeugt eine virtuelle Festplatte, installiert das gewünschte Betriebssystem von einem Disk-Image oder einer Installations-CD, und startet das neu installierte System zukünftig, indem man im Wirtssystem VirtualBox als Programm startet und von dort das gewünschte Betriebssystem.

Auswahl der Betriebssysteme im Installationsassistenten

Dabei bietet VirtualBox viele Kombinationen aus Wirts- und Gastsystemen. In meinem aktuellen Fall laufen nun Windows XP und Kubuntu 4 als Gäste auf meinem MacBook.

Die Gastsysteme klinken sich dabei hardwerkmäßig in das Wirtssystem ein, so dass ich mir keine Gedanken über USB-, CD-ROM, LAN- oder WLAN-Konfiguration machen muss. Mit gemeinsamen Ordnern kann ich Daten zwischen den Systemen austauschen und Copy & Paste funktioniert ohnehin systemübergreifend.

Wenn man das Gastsystem im Fullscreenmodus betreibt ist die Illusion perfekt.

Fullscreen-Modus: Windows XP unter OS X

Noch schöner wird's im (etwas holprig benannten) "nahtlosen Mode". Die Fenster des Gastsystems erscheinen einfach in der OS X-Umgebung und beim Wechsel von Fenster zu Fenster wechselt man von Betriebssystem zu Betriebssystem.

Friedliches Nebeneinander: Firefox (OS X), Internet Explorer (Win XP) und Konqueror (Kubuntu 4)

Natürlich beherrschen VMWare und Co. noch einiges mehr, aber für eine kostenlose OpenSource-Software ist VirtualBox wirklich sensationell gut - und erfreulich ressourcenschonend. Selbst mit zwei Gastsystemen im nahtlosen Modus hat es meinen Rechner noch nicht ernsthaft ins Schnaufen gebracht.

The third test to be played at the PSS stadium at Colombo from August 8-12 promises to be an absolute humdinger of a match, going by the several ebbs and flows in the first two test matches of the series.

It was heartening to see India make a comeback as gallantly as they did in the second test after being absolutely decimated by the Lankans in the first test. Having never won a series in the emerald isle since 1993, this seems to be

India’s best chance to do so, in spite of the way Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis mesmerized the Indian batsmen in the first test.

Even with the middle order looking suspect, the bowling line seems to be in decent form and the two openers are in fine touch, which augurs really well for the Indian team. On almost all the occasions that India have won a test match abroad, they have been aided by a significant contribution by the opening batsmen.

Gautam Gambhir’s defiant approach along with Sehwag’s pyrotechnics at the top seems to be the best formula for the Indians. What is slightly worrying though is India’s dependence on Sehwag, and the reason for this is the massive dip in the overall strike rate of the team subsequent to Sehwag’s dismissal in any particular innings.

Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are the two batsmen following the openers and they need to seriously rethink their approach facing up to the two M’s (Murali and Mendis).

Over to the bowling, I reckon this is the best bowling line up that India has had entering the deciding test match of a series in a long time. Each bowler is unique, and it is this versatility that will enable a bowling attack to get twenty wickets which will win them test matches.

The length that young Ishant Sharma bowled at Galle, particularly in the last innings was very impressive. Most young fast bowlers seem to bowl on two lengths either too full or too short, but Ishant seems to hitting the right areas – however clichéd as that sounds.

As he did in Australia has found that bowling in between the lengths can trouble even the best batsmen in the world on their best day. Harbhajan Singh, with ten wickets in the match proved to all his detractors that in spite of his recent indiscretions can be a matchwinner. Expect even better from the spirited Sikh in the years to come.

The Lankans will not relinquish their unbeaten record at home against India easily and I am sure that Mahela Jayawardene would already have devised Plan Bs and Plan Cs to combat the Indians. A change in the batting order with the in-form Thilan Samareeweera coming up the order might just work for the Lankans.

In the last innings of the test match at Galle, the pressure of Sangakkara and Jayawardene falling early seemed to weigh down heavily on the Lankan middle order. Apart from that particular inning the Lankan batsmen are in better form than their Indian counterparts. Murali and Mendis, however seemed to lack a plan B against Sehwag.

It would take a brave man to bet on either side at this stage with honours even after the first two tests. India would be marginal favourites carrying forward the momentum from Galle .A lot will hinge on the toss as batting first would bring the spinners from either side into play in the last innings. All in all plenty to look forward to in Colombo.

Finally one has to admire the sheer brilliance of Virender Sehwag. His approach to batting is refreshing and the time has come for cricket pundits all over the world to recognize him as one of the greats of the game. His ability to go on after a hundred is almost Bradmanesque and he seems to be the only batsmen since Brian Lara who is able to string together such large scores on a consistent basis. What distinguishes him from other attacking batsmen of the modern era is his ability to play a different stroke to ever delivery. Setting a field for a batsman like him when he is full-flow, particularly in test matches where captains are looking for wickets can be a nightmare.

There are a lot of inter board “tug of wars” at the moment which are wrongly being associated with cricket. I use the word wrongly because make no mistake; these clashes are in no way beneficial to the game or those who play the game for a living.

The BCCI seems absolutely hell bent on dividing the cricketing world along financial lines to fill its own pockets and settle scores, which as a cricket fan is in simple terms unfair, unjust and unacceptable..

It has come to a stage where politicians who have never played the game and haven’t the slightest idea of its nuances are preventing cricketers from playing cricket.

This may sound a bit doomsday-ish, but the scenario is going to worsen if nobody steps in.

In spite of Kent complying with BCCI and excluding ICL contracted players from their potential champions league team, the latter just isn’t willing to budge.

Certain unscrupulous elements associated with the game are riding on a wave created by the love and passion that fans from the subcontinent have for the game, and they are flexing their muscles to blackmail the boards of countries where the game isn’t quite as popular.

The cricketing world is in serious danger of being divided. The reasons aren’t reasons related to cricket at all.

The ICC doesn’t seem capable of stepping in and sorting this mess out, for one reason or another, which I shall dwell upon in a separate article.

The only people who could put an end to this are international cricketers who command the love and respect of the fans that make the game what it is.

Working under the assumption that the game and representing their country means more to any cricketer than wealth (it is far too early too think otherwise), I have no doubt that a lot of players are irked with way the game is being managed at the moment.

It is time for them to stand tall and be united to protect and preserve the sanctity of the game. Maybe that is too much to ask, but I am silently confident that such a day is round the corner.

Twenty20 cricket is not bad for the game, those looking to make a quick buck out of it, however, are.

で、プロセスを見たら、vmware-userというプロセスが起動している。VMware Toolsのようにウィンドウを開かないのが素敵。

これは、/etc/rc2.d/S20open-vm-toolsで自動起動されているらしく、Ubuntuのログイン画面でもマウスがシームレスに移動できる。

Ubuntu 7.10の頃のvmwareの仮想イメージ版では実現されていなかったと思ったけど、非常に快適。しかもrootで動作しているから、有料のVMware WorkstationならファイルシステムのShrinkも特に何もしなくても実行できるかもしれない。（VMware Toolsだと、rootで実行していないとファイルシステムのShrinkができない）

「class cui:Error」で検索するといろいろ見つかるのですが、どうも文字化けが原因らしい。

で、.vmxファイル中のusb.present="FALSE"にしてみたり、VMware Playerのアイコンまたはショートカットを右クリックして「プロパティ」→「互換性」→「Windows 2000」にしてもダメ。

Mac OS X用のVMware Fusionでは、このような現象は起きないんだけど・・・。

な～んか、Windows版のVMwareってだめだめって感じがする。これって要するにMacを買え！っていう啓示なんだろうか・・・。

以下を試してみたところ、VMware Player 2.0.4は、仮想マシンのバージョン「6」に対応していました。また、バッテリー情報を伝える機能にも対応していました。

しかし、最新のVMware Playerが、VMware Workstation 6と同じ仮想マシンのバージョン「6」をサポートしているのであれば、ひょっとすると以下の方法でWindows上のVMware Playerでバッテリ情報を伝える機能を使えるようになるかもしれない。

• VMware Fusionで、仮想マシンを作成する、あるいは、VMware Serverで作成した仮想マシンVMware Fusionに持って行ってアップグレードする。
• VMware FusionのVMware toolsも抜き出してきて、VMware Player上のゲストOSにインストールする。

具体的には、vmxファイルに、以下のプロパティを追加すると、バッテリー情報をゲストOSに伝えることができるようになるようです。

ただし、仮想マシンファイルをバージョン「6」にアップグレードする必要があるので、いずれにしてもVMware FusionかVMware Workstation 6を購入する必要があります。

もし、知り合いがVMware FusionかVMware Workstation 6を持っていれば、仮想マシンファイルをアップグレードしてもらうと良いと思います。ただし、一度、アップグレードしてしまうと、VMware Serverでは仮想マシンのバージョン「4」までしか対応しておらず使用できなくなるので注意が必要です。

VMware Player 2.0.4とVMware Server 1.0.6上にUbuntu-7.1.0をインストールして、ACPI経由でバッテリ情報が取得できるか試してみたところ、取得できない。

それに対して、Mac OS X用のVMware Fusionの「バッテリ情報をゲストOSに伝える」のオプションをONにして、Ubuntu-7.10を起動すると、ACアダプタを抜くとバッテリーの残量表示が行われ、ACアダプタを接続するとしばらくして充電状態が表示される。

上記の記事によると、VMware Workstation 6では、バッテリ情報を伝える機能があるらしい。

ちなみに、VMware Server 1.0.6（2008/07/28現在で最新）の仮想マシン設定ファイル（vmx）を見ると仮想マシンのバージョンは「4」。

仮想マシンのアップグレードを行ったがその必要がないと言われるので、VMware Server 1.0.6は、VMware Workstationの仮想マシンのバージョン「4」まで対応していると考えられる。

また、VMware Fusionでは、仮想マシンのバージョンが「6」らしい。

基本設計はVMware Workstation 6と同等であると考えられる。例えば，VMware社は仮想マシンにVirtual Hardware Versionという番号を付けている。VMware Fusion for Macで作成した仮想マシンのバージョンは，VMware Workstation 6で作成したものと同じ「6」。一方，VMware Workstation 5やVMware Serverでは「4」だ。

つまり、仮想マシンのバージョンが「6」以上じゃないと、バッテリ情報を伝える機能がサポートされていないということになる。

もし、Windows版のVMwareでバッテリ情報をゲストOSに伝えたいと思ったら、正攻法だと有料版のVMware Workstationを買えということになりそう。

しかし、最新のVMware Playerが、VMware Workstation 6と同じ仮想マシンのバージョン「6」をサポートしているのであれば、ひょっとすると以下の方法でWindows上のVMware Playerでバッテリ情報を伝える機能を使えるようになるかもしれない。

• VMware Fusionで、仮想マシンを作成する、あるいは、VMware Serverで作成した仮想マシンVMware Fusionに持って行ってアップグレードする。
• VMware FusionのVMware toolsも抜き出してきて、VMware Player上のゲストOSにインストールする。

ただ、1つ気になるのは、VMware Playerは指定できるオプションは以下の通り非常に少ない。vmxファイルを直接いじればなんとかなるかもしれないけどどうなんだろう。

それと、VMware Playerで共有フォルダをどのように設定すれば良いのかと思ったら、有料版のVMware WorkstationやフリーのVMware Serverを使って設定する（vmxファイルに設定される）、あるいは、手作業でvmxファイルを設定するしかなさそう。なんとも不便。

在安裝 Fedora Core 9 的時候, 特意避開了 X-Window 跟圖形化 Internet 等相關選項, 除了可以節省空間外, 同時也可以省一點記憶體的使用, 尤其是 VM 跑起來, 最主要的 RAM 還是要夠才行.

安裝程序可以參考第一次安裝的文件, 只是在這邊遇到網路卡在開機的時候不會自動啟動, 必須要下 Service network start 才行, 後來火大到 webmin 的介面去把該服務設定系統啟動時自動執行來徹底絕決這個問題.

除了 Server Console 的程式可以直接控制 VMWare Server 外, 另外有一個 Server 端的套件可以透過網頁的方式來控制 VM Machine 的執行, 以及一般作業的系統監控, 在 Download Server 的頁面上就找得到這個套件 VMware-mui-1.0.6-91891.tar.gz, 其安裝說明方式 http://pubs.vmware.com/server1/admin/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=admin&file=install_lin_mui_gsx.html.

解開後會產生 vmware-mui-distrib 這個子目錄, 點進去後直接執行 ./ vmware-install.pl 把必要的東西設定一下, 此時會在主機上建立一個走 https 的web服務, 其連結 https://serverip.com:8333 點進去後會看到登入畫面,

除了可以登入監看外, 也可以下載 Server Console 到自己的電腦來執行.

登入後可以看得到VMWare Server系統目前整體耗用資源, 以及每個 VM 所耗用的資源, 點選 VM 左邊的 Windows icon 還可以對 VM 作微調的工作, 如系統開機時自動啟動開 VM, 系統關機時最多等候分鐘讓 VM自動結束等等..

經過實際測試後, 確認在這些變更的項目是可以直接的正常執行無誤, 例如我把 Vista01的 VM 設定成開機時自動啟動, 系統關機時也可以由 VMWare Server console 的程式看到系統自動關機中, Fedora Core 9 主機重新開機時, 系統也會自動的把 Vista01 這個主機作開機的動作, 在未來實際應用上有增加許多彈性以及減少人員介入的時機.

在系統選項除了可以設定 Default 的開機參數, 如啟動 3 分鐘之後才開始啟動 VM, 讓系統完成開機程序後再來作其他項目減少出錯的機會, 也可以設定系統開機的順序, 例如在 AD 環境下, DC 應該是要先被啟動的, 以防止其他主機連不到 DC 而產生錯誤, 在 Application 的模式也是要把 Database 先啟動, 之後再開啟 App 主機.

以上這些設定在 Server console 就看不到喔.

A promessa é boa, a solução parece ser simples e fácil, vamos aguardar até dia 29 de julho quando poderemos fazer downloads e testar a ferramenta, só espero que melhore um pouco a compatibilidade com hardware X86 para competir com o XEN neste aspecto.

Estratégia foi anunciada pelo novo CEO Paul Maritz, durante anúncio dos resultados financeiros da empresa

Em sua primeira iniciativa para reagir ao Hyper-V da Microsoft, a VMware anuncai a oferta do hipervisor ESXi gratuitamente, a partir de 28 de julho. O sistema já foi o principal produto da linha da companhia. Até segunda-feira, ele vai custar US$ 495 por cópia. A versão ESXi representa uma forma mais fácil de instalar e de usar o ESX.

A estratégia para oferecer o ESXi grátis busca fazer frente ao esforço da Microsoft de propagar o seu Hyper-V, agora disponível como um recurso de US$ 28 no Windows Server 2008. Os outros produtos da VMware não terão seus preços alterados; a iniciativa do ESXi vai "disseminar no mercado" os produtos da empresa e proporcionar aos clientes uma oportunidade de experimentar, antes de comprar soluções mais avançadas como o Virtual Infrastructure 3 e o Site Recovery Manager, segundo representantes da companhia.

A lista de preços da VMware varia de US$ 995 para o Virtual Infrastructure 3 Foundation Edition, a US$ 5,750 mil para o Virtual Infrastructure 3 Enterprise Edition. O Site Recovery Manager faz parte de um pacote de gerenciamento e automação que custa US$3,995 mil.

Além da oferta gratuita do ESXi, a VMware negocia acordos com Dell, IBM e HP para que o ESX, a versão mais completa do hipervisor, seja vendida nos servidores destas fabricantes, configurador como parte do hardware.

Balkansky também aproveitou para rebater a visão da Microsoft, de que a virtualização faz parte do sistema operacional. Em sua opinião, a VMware continua uma fonte independente de virtualização.

This is actually a known issue with ESX, there are, unfortunately, a few extra steps you have to follow when adding a WinXP machine.
- Select custom, instead of typical, when you add the VM
- For I/O Adapter select Bus Logic (instead of LSI)
- When booting up the VM you MUST press F6 when the first blue setup screen shows up (if you don't you have to create the VM again!)
- When prompted to, connect the floppy that is located in /vmimages/floppies
- Click through and proceed like you would a normal install

That is the work around, not too bad, but it would be nice to have known this going in! Ich brauche eine Festplatte, die sich nur extern auf "beschreibbar" umschalten läst. Also habe ich mir als Linux admin gedacht:

Unter linux ist alles eine Datei...unter VMWare sind die Platten der VMs meist nur Dateien...also nehme ich eine vdmk Datei und beschreibe diese aus der VM...danach mache ich sie im VMFS read-only und...

bah nix wars, der ESX läuft scheinbar mit root und von Dateirechten weiß er auch nix, also ändert er die Datei munter weiter, obwohl ich ihm das verboten habe.

Der Dreistigkeit nicht genug, das VMFS unterstütz noch nicht mal dateiattribute also funktioniert mein Plan die Datei immutable zu machen auch nicht.

Ich gehe also davon aus, dass die Dateirechte nur zur lokalen Rechteverwaltung für menschliche Benutzer gedacht sind und nichts mit den eigentlichen Dateirechten zu tun haben. Leider...oder wie ein Kollege zu sagen pflegt:

VMware has defined that VirtualCenter does not use the following range: 00:50:56:00:00:00 to 00:50:56:3F:FF:FF where 00:50:56 is the OUI.

The steps:

1. Power off & remove the server from the VirtualCenter inventory. This is a necessary step, because VC will overwrite your settings during Power On!
2. Edit the .vmx file and locate the following generated MAC address:
   Ethernet0.addressType =
   and
   Ethernet0.generatedAddress =
3. Change the value for ethernet0.addressType from “vpx” to “static”
4. Change ethernet0.GeneratedAddress to ethernet0.Address
5. Change the current MAC to a MAC address in the following range:
   00:50:56:00:00:00-00:50:56:3F:FF:FF
6. In VirtualCenter, select an ESX host and go to storage
7. Browse the data store & locate your VM
8. Right-click on the .vmx file, and select Add to inventory
9. Power On the server. Issue the command ipconfig /all and locate the VMware NIC. Your manually assigned MAC address should be there.

I know you can set your MAC address inside Windows, but I would avoid this.
