As if the destruction and the internal problems weren't enough, a group "Indian Mujahidden" pops out of now where, trying to terrorizing the minds of innocent people who are working for the country. There could be a possibility that the Indian Mujahideen attacks be linked to the signing of Nuclear deal and victory of the congress on the trust vote. The surprising fact is that two serial blasts have taken place. One on Bangalore and the other on Ahmedabad and both within a gap of 24 hours. A war against India has begun and such precision attacking of the development centers of modern India could be threatening on the minds of the Indians. They are playing with the psychology this time. Earlier it used to be attack and hide policy by the terrorists but this time they are playing a attack and attack game.<br />
Our intelligence have been outsmarted or to simply say they aren't smart enough to save such tragic incidents from happening. The security in India is far from satisfactory as it very easy to infiltrate and strike. More over there are groups that are openly challenging the government whereas sonia and manmohan singh are busy over other issues and using all their time and energy in criticizing the opposition in every way possible. I am not saying that L K Advani isgood, he is the worse of them all. In times of crisis he is blaming the center for the attacks. It is just that he has lost his sense of right and wrong, after all old age, what to do. Manmohan Singh is also a victim of it. Sonia Gandhi has his remote. In this politics, who looses, the common man, popularly know as Aam Aadmi by Laaloo prasad yadav. Where was he when this happened, Delivering a proverbial speech or searching such speeches. 31 innocent people lost their lives in two days of terror. More than 200 families were in grief because their loved one had die and countless have been terrorized. It is often said in war that a half dead victim can be more useful than killing him. Same has been done in the twin serial blasts. I just hope are dumb headed low thinking politicians get over their bickering ways and do some good for the people and country.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ahmedabad (PTI): Terror struck Ahmedabad when 16 coordinated serial blasts ripped through the city on Saturday night killing 29 people and injuring nearly 90 sending a wave of panic, a day after multiple explosions rocked Bangalore in another BJP-ruled state.</p>
<p>Fourteen crowded areas in the Gujarat capital including market places were hit in the synchronised "low-intensity" explosions in a space of 60 to 70 minutes after the first blast hit Maninagar at 6.45 pm. The bombs placed in tiffin boxes were strapped on to bicycles. Some of the blast sites were in sensitive areas in the old city but the situation was peaceful as the night wore on.<br />

There were three blasts in Maninagar--the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi--and two in Sarkhej targetting a state transport CNG bus and near the old Sangam theatre.</p>
<p>"As per the latest information 29 persons were killed and 88 injured," Modi told reporters late tonight.</p>
<p>Significantly, two blasts occured in the premises of Civil and LG hospitals where several victims of the explosions in other areas were being rushed exacerbating the already tense situation. A nationwide alert has been sounded.</p>
<p>A shocked Modi said the Ahmedabad blasts was a "war against India" and a handiwork of terror groups. Declaring there should be one voice against terrorism, Modi also said there is a "mastermind group and a mastermind country" behind the blasts. The people behind the attack will be "hounded out," said Modi, who also spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Modi said the modus operandi of terrorists was same.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>as the Bangalore police are trying to ascertain the people behind the serial blasts which rattled the city on Friday, investigation has revealed that embedded chips were used as a timer to trigger all the explosions.</p>
<p>Police on Saturday defused a live improvised explosive device (IED) at Koramangala in the city’s IT corridor and subsequently found that all the IEDs, which exploded on Friday, were planted at least three days in advance.<br />

Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari told The Hindu that in the other recent explosions in different parts of the country cell phones were used as trigger.</p>
<p>An embedded chip can be programmed like a digital clock and it produces a fuse pulse that triggers the detonation.</p>
<p>“The IEDs had sufficient explosive material which could have caused high intensity blasts. We are trying to find out scientifically what reduced the impact of the explosion,” he said.</p>
<p>Mr. Bidari said investigations were on the right track but it would take time to confirm who masterminded and executed the blasts, in which a woman was killed and nine were injured. He was tight-lipped to a query on whether any terrorist group was involved.<br />

<p>This is why I love NAS! He speaks for our generation. Thank you NAS for being articulate and intelligent, for having a voice and courage to share it with the world. And thank you for telling them that you are NOT a gangster rapper. I hate when they get it wrong.</p>
<p>NAS requested that FOX do something to change the permission of racist comments that air on the station. News is supposed to be unbiased. Instead FOX goes beyond the slight bias and actually offends its viewers. In response, NAS collected over 600,000 signatures from viewers of all ethnicities to create change. FOX would not accept the petitions, but Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report did.</p>

Characterised by a pervasive pattern of grandiosity and self-importance, need for admiration, and lack of empathy, people with narcissistic personality disorder overestimate their abilities and inflate their accomplishments, often appearing boastful and pretentious, whilst correspondingly underestimating and devaluing the achievements and accomplishments of others.</p>
<p>Often the narcissist will fraudulently claim to have qualifications or experience or affiliations or associations which they don't have or aren't entitled to. Belief in superiority, inflating their self-esteem to match that of senior or important people with whom they associate or identify, insisting on having the "top" professionals or being affiliated with the "best" institutions, but criticising the same people who disappoint them are also common features of narcissistic personality disorder.</p>
<p>Narcissists react angrily to criticism and when rejected, the narcissist will often denounce the profession which has rejected them (usually for lack of competence or misdeed) but simultaneously and paradoxically represent themselves as belonging to the profession they are vilifying.</p>
<p>Fragile self-esteem, a need for constant attention and admiration, fishing for compliments (often with great charm), an expectation of superior entitlement, expecting others to defer to them, and a lack of sensitivity especially when others do not react in the expected manner, are also hallmarks of the disorder. Greed, expecting to receive before and above the needs of others, overworking those around them, and forming romantic (sic) or sexual relationships for the purpose of advancing their purpose or career, abusing special privileges and squandering extra resources also feature.</p>
<p>People with narcissistic personality disorder also have difficulty recognizing the needs and feelings of others, and are dismissive, contemptuous and impatient when others share or discuss their concerns or problems. They are also oblivious to the hurtfulness of their behaviour or remarks, show an emotional coldness and a lack of reciprocal interest, exhibit envy (especially when others are accorded recognition), have an arrogant, disdainful and patronizing attitude, and are quick to blame and criticise others when their needs and expectations are not met.</p>
<p>The <a name="DSM-IV">DSM-IV</a> Diagnostic Criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder are:</p>
<p>A. A pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, lack of empathy, as indicated by at least five of:</p>
<p>1. a grandiose sense of self-importance<br />
2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love<br />
3. believes that he or she is "special" and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)<br />
4. requires excessive admiration<br />
5. has a sense of entitlement, ie unreasonable expectations of especially favourable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations<br />
6. is interpersonally exploitative, ie takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends<br />
7. lacks empathy and is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others<br />
8. is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her<br />
9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes</p>
<p style="border:medium none;padding:0;"><strong>The <a name="Need">need</a> for attention</strong></p>
<p>Human beings are social creatures and need social interaction, feedback, and validation of their worth. The emotionally mature person doesn't need to go hunting for these; they gain it naturally from their daily life, especially from their work and from stable relationships. Daniel Goleman calls emotional maturity <em>emotional intelligence</em>, or EQ; he believes, and I agree, that EQ is a much better indicator of a person's character and value than intelligence quotient, or IQ.</p>
<p>The emotionally immature person, however, has low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence and consequently feels insecure; to counter these feelings of insecurity they will spend a large proportion of their lives creating situations in which they become the centre of attention. It may be that the need for attention is inversely proportional to emotional maturity, therefore anyone indulging in attention-seeking behaviours is telling you how emotionally immature they are.</p>
<p>Attention-seeking behaviour is surprisingly common. Being the centre of attention alleviates feelings of insecurity and inadequacy but the relief is temporary as the underlying problem remains unaddressed: low self-confidence and low self-esteem, and consequent low levels of self-worth and self-love.</p>
<p>Insecure and emotionally immature people often exhibit bullying behaviours, especially manipulation and deception. These are necessary in order to obtain attention which would not otherwise be forthcoming. Bullies and harassers have the emotional age of a young child and will exhibit temper tantrums, deceit, lying and manipulation to avoid exposure of their true nature and to evade accountability and sanction. This page lists some of the most common tactics bullies and manipulators employ to gain attention for themselves. An attention-seeker may exhibit several of the methods listed below.</p>
<p><a name="Methods"><strong>Attention</strong></a><strong> seeking methods</strong></p>
<p><strong>The sufferer</strong>: this might include feigning or exaggerating illness, playing on an injury, or perhaps causing or inviting injury, in extreme cases going as far as losing a limb. Severe cases may meet the diagnostic criteria for <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/munchaus.htm">Munchausen Syndrome</a> (also know as Factitious Disorder). The illness or injury becomes a vehicle for gaining sympathy and thus attention. The attention-seeker excels in manipulating people through their emotions, especially that of guilt. It's very difficult not to feel sorry for someone who relates a plausible tale of suffering in a sob story or "poor me" drama.</p>
<p><strong>The saviour</strong>: in attention-seeking personality disorders like <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/munchaus.htm#MSBP">Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy</a> (MSBP, also known as Factitious Disorder By Proxy) the person, usually female, creates opportunities to be centre of attention by intentionally causing harm to others and then being their saviour, by saving their life, and by being such a caring, compassionate person. Few people realise the injury was deliberate. The MSBP mother or nurse may kill several babies before suspicions are aroused. When not in saviour mode, the saviour may be resentful, perhaps even contemptuous, of the person or persons she is saving.</p>
<p><strong>The rescuer</strong>: particularly common in family situations, she's the one who will dash in and "rescue" people whenever the moment is opportune - to herself, that is. She then gains gratification from basking in the glory of her humanitarian actions. She will prey on any person suffering misfortune, infirmity, illness, injury, or anyone who has a vulnerability. The act of rescue and thus the opportunities for gaining attention can be enhanced if others are excluded from the act of rescue; this helps create a dependency relationship between the rescuer and rescued which can be exploited for further acts of rescue (and attention) later. When not in rescue mode, the rescuer may be resentful, perhaps even contemptuous, of the person she is rescuing.</p>
<p><strong>The organiser</strong>: she may present herself as the one in charge, the one organising everything, the one who is reliable and dependable, the one people can always turn to. However, the objective is not to help people (this is only a means to an end) but to always be the centre of attention.</p>
<p><strong>The manipulator</strong>: she may exploit family relationships, manipulating others with guilt and distorting perceptions; although she may not harm people physically, she causes everyone to suffer emotional injury. Vulnerable family members are favourite targets. A common attention-seeking ploy is to claim she is being persecuted, victimised, excluded, isolated or ignored by another family member or group, perhaps insisting she is the target of a campaign of exclusion or harassment.</p>
<p><strong>The mind-poisoner</strong>: adept at poisoning peoples' minds by manipulating their perceptions of others, especially against the current target.</p>
<p><strong>The drama queen</strong>: every incident or opportunity, no matter how insignificant, is exploited, exaggerated and if necessary distorted to become an event of dramatic proportions. Everything is elevated to crisis proportions. Histrionics may be present where the person feels she is not the centre of attention but should be. Inappropriate flirtatious behaviour may also be present.</p>
<p><strong>The busy bee</strong>: this individual is the busiest person in the world if her constant retelling of her life is to be believed. Everyday events which are regarded as normal by normal people take on epic proportions as everyone is invited to simultaneously admire and commiserate with this oh-so-busy person who never has a moment to herself, never has time to sit down, etc. She's never too busy, though, to tell you how busy she is.</p>
<p><strong>The feigner</strong>: when called to account and outwitted, the person instinctively uses the <em>denial - counterattack - feigning victimhood</em> strategy to manipulate everyone present, especially bystanders and those in authority. The most effective method of feigning victimhood is to burst into tears, for most people's instinct is to feel sorry for them, to put their arm round them or offer them a tissue. There's little more plausible than real tears, although as actresses know, it's possible to turn these on at will. Feigners are adept at using crocodile tears. From years of practice, attention-seekers often give an Oscar-winning performance in this respect. Feigning victimhood is a favourite tactic of bullies and harassers to evade accountability and sanction. When accused of bullying and harassment, the person immediately turns on the water works and claims they are the one being bullied or harassed - even though there's been no prior mention of being bullied or harassed. It's the fact that this claim appears only <em>after</em> and <em>in response to</em> having been called to account that is revealing. Mature adults do not burst into tears when held accountable for their actions.</p>
<p><strong>The false confessor</strong>: this person confesses to crimes they haven't committed in order to gain attention from the police and the media. In some cases people have confessed to being serial killers, even though they cannot provide any substantive evidence of their crimes. Often they will confess to crimes which have just been reported in the media. Some individuals are know to the police as serial confessors. The false confessor is different from a person who make a false confession and admits to a crime of which they are accused because of emotional pressure and inappropriate interrogation tactics.</p>
<p><strong>The abused</strong>: a person claims they are the victim of abuse, sexual abuse, rape etc as a way of gaining attention for themselves. Crimes like abuse and rape are difficult to prove at the best of times and their incidence is so common that it is easy to make a plausible claim as a way of gaining attention.</p>
<p><strong>The online victim</strong>: this person uses Internet chat rooms and forums to allege that they've been the victim of rape, violence, harassment, abuse etc. The alleged crime is never reported to the authorities, for obvious reasons. <p><strong>The victim:</strong> she may intentionally create acts of harassment against herself, eg send herself hate mail or damage her own possessions in an attempt to incriminate a fellow employee, a family member, neighbour, etc. Scheming, cunning, devious, deceptive and manipulative, she will identify her "harasser" and produce circumstantial evidence in support of her claim. She will revel in the attention she gains and use her glib charm to plausibly dismiss any suggestion that she herself may be responsible. However, a background check may reveal that this is not the first time she has had this happen to her.</p>
<p>In many cases the attention-seeker is a serial bully whose behaviour contains many of the characteristics listed under the profile of a <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/serial.htm">serial bully</a>, especially the <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/serial.htm#Attention">Attention-Seeker</a>. <p>Feigning victimhood is common to serial bullies and this aspect comes to the fore in most cases once the bully has been held accountable and he or she cannot escape or rely on their support network. The tactic of denial followed by immediate counterattack followed by feigning victimhood is described on the <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/serial.htm#Denial">serial bully page</a>.</p>
<p><a name="Attention"><strong>Attention</strong></a><strong> seeking and narcissism</strong></p>
<p>Like most personality disorders, <a href="http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/npd.htm">narcissism</a> occurs to different degrees in different people and reveals itself in many ways. Many business leaders exhibit narcissism, although when present in excess, the short-term benefits are outweighed by long-term unsustainability which can, and often does, lead to disaster.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;"><a name="Where"><strong><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;">Where</span></strong></a><strong><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&#34;"> are people bullied?</span></strong></p>

La fille résiste et explique qu'elle préfère en rester là. Le garçon insiste, verbalement ou physiquement, pour aller plus loin. La fille continue de dire «non», mais il s'impose et, finalement, l'agresse.</span></td>

<p><strong> <span style="font-family:Arial;color:#336666;">Les agressions sexuelles dans les fréquentations</span></strong><br />
Il est étonnant de constater que, dans la majorité des cas, la victime connaît son agresseur. En effet, on aurait plutôt tendance à se représenter un inconnu attaquant une femme ou une jeune fille dans la rue, tard le soir ou en pleine nuit. Pourtant, les statistiques démontrent que celle-ci risque davantage d'être agressée sexuellement par un homme ou un garçon dont elle n'a aucune raison de se méfier.</p>
<p><span style="font-family:Arial;"><br />
<strong> <span style="font-family:Arial;color:#336666;">Personne au rendez-vous ou au «flirt » qui finit mal</span></strong><br />
C'est une situation courante: une jeune fille ou une femme est agressée sexuellement par un petit ami ou par une connaissance à l'occasion d'une sortie, d'une rencontre, d'un rendez-vous amoureux, d'une fête, ou encore au travail. Il arrive souvent même que les jeunes filles et les femmes se sentent coupables ou responsables d'avoir provoqué le comportement violent du garçon ou de l'homme.</span></p>
<p>Dans l'étude québécoise de Poitras et Lavoie (1994), effectuée auprès d'adolescentes de 14 à 19 ans, 54 % d'entre elles rapportent avoir été agressées sexuellement dans le cadre d'une relation amoureuse<a href="http://www.servicevie.com/02sante/sante_Femmes/Femmes11092000/femmes11092000.html#%282%29">(2)</a>.</p>
<p><strong> <span style="font-family:Arial;color:#336666;">La violence, ça commence parfois à l'adolescence</span></strong><br />
- Dix pour cent des jeunes filles du secondaire connaissent la violence dans leurs relations amoureuses.<br />

<p><strong> <span style="font-family:Arial;color:#336666;">La violence dans les relations amoureuses des jeunes</span></strong><br />
Pour une adolescente ou un adolescent, avoir un « chum » ou une « blonde » procure une certaine reconnaissance face aux autres. Non seulement la violence dans les fréquentations amoureuses des jeunes existe-t-elle, mais elle ressemble souvent à s'y méprendre à celle des couples adultes : elle peut être physique, verbale, sexuelle ou psychologique.</p>
<p>Comme chez les adultes, il n'existe pas de portrait type des jeunes garçons et des jeunes filles qui vivent des situations de violence dans une relation amoureuse. Les jeunes agresseurs sont très souvent des garçons ordinaires, fort aimables avec les adultes et leur entourage, mais méprisants, autoritaires et «contrôlants» avec leur amie. Quant aux victimes, elles sont de tous les milieux sociaux, vivent des réussites ou des échecs, et peuvent être des filles très populaires ou très solitaires.</p>
<p>La prévention de la violence faite aux jeunes filles et aux femmes vise un changement profond des valeurs, des attitudes et des comportements. C'est un travail de longue haleine. La prévention auprès des jeunes consiste à leur proposer des modèles de rapports égalitaires entre filles et garçons pour favoriser des relations plus harmonieuses.</p>

Cette citation qui figure au début de l'ouvrage de Sander Breiner   Slaughter of the Innocents: Child Abuse Through the Ages and Today [Le   Massacre des innocents: enfants maltraités aujourd'hui et au cours des siècles]   nous rappelle sans ménagement que la brutalisation des garçons remonte à la   plus haute antiquité. Le passage en question est une «instruction» à ceux   qui cherchaient à contourner une loi promulguée par l'empereur romain   Domitien qui interdisait la castration des garçons destinés à des bordels   ou vendus à des maîtres qui les sodomisaient. Au tournant du vingtième siècle,   on pratiquait encore régulièrement la circoncision masculine sans anesthésie   en guise de «thérapeutique» pour réprimer des comportements comme   l'hyperactivité et la masturbation (De Mause, 1988). Quant à ceux qui   croiraient que ce type de traitement inexcusable des petits ou des jeunes de   sexe masculin est chose du passé, nous attirons leur attention sur les éléments   suivants :</p>

<blockquote><p>une autre émission de télévision illustre une situation d'inceste mère/fils     dans le cadre d'un sketch comique portant sur le sexe au téléphone;</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>un article dans le journal au sujet d'une mère qui a laissé son fils de     11 ans attaché et bâillonné dans un garde-robes cite les propos d'un     travailleur social qui aurait déclaré durant le procès que le garçon était     très porté «à mentir, voler, manipuler et à être perturbateur à l'école»     et qu'il s'agissait en général d'«un enfant très désagréable».</p></blockquote>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is an assumption that those who look within to find the power that fuels the magic’s are somehow corrupt.....that anything that is not subscribed to by the masses as 'normal' is anti-social and designated as 'dangerous'. All through my life I have under gone victimisation for what I believe in.... just read this blog for total proof as to the extreme pain and victimisation that I underwent and still go through now...for the sake of justice....for the sake of those abused.....I think that those who govern must themselves be governed...I now as I write to you know that I in all possibility will be murdered, as there is a hit on me....this is not a joke burt reality....the exposure that I started now has taken hold. No one can stop this...so I feel a certain thankful certainty that whatever happens to me has been worth the end result. Stand up for what you believe in....that is the ultimate message.  I want to spend the time remaining building an 'interactive' CHURCH so that the public can visit and understand the complexities of the situation. <p>“Phnom Penh: Domestic violence remains a major issue in Khmer society - prevention and solutions are need immediately. Domestic violence becomes more cruel, serious, and alarming, especially during the first six months of 2008 this happened; and this trend has increased continually form year to year.</p>
<p>“Officials of different organizations working on domestic violence reported to <em>Khmer Sthapana</em> on 24 July 2008 that, during the period of the first six months of 2008, domestic violence increased alarmingly, and it is believed to be result of a decline of social morality, of inefficient education, and of the poor implementation of regulations. </p>
<p>“Recently, a son killed his father by using a sickle to cut his throat on 22 July 2008 in Khvet Thom, Prey Chhor, Kompong Cham. In another case, in Koh Roka Village, Koh Roka Commune, Peam Chor, Prey Veng, on 22 July 2008, a husband cut his wife’s throat with a cleaver making her bleeding all over the body because of an argument etc…</p>
<p>“According to a report by the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association – ADHOC-     domestic violence increased in 2007. In 2006, the organization received 532 case reports, but in 2007, there were 632 cases which led to 29 deaths. This increase is a signal of inefficient law enforcement, aiming at the prevention and the protection of victims from domestic violence. </p>
<p>“In 2007, there were 603 cases of domestic violence that led to injuries. Such violence causing injuries resulted from drunkenness, jealousy, from asserting power as the head of the family, having extra-marital relations, gambling, poverty, and the lack of education, sexual  violence, etc…</p>
<p>“Looking at activities which lead to violence, offenders always find reasons to create arguments - after returning home from going to places of entertainment, or when they cannot get the money they ask for; they may start to destroy everything in their house, or use insults and rude words. After that, they hit the victims with sticks, sickles, cleavers, axes, or hoes, or by kicking. Sometimes, violence leads to disability or to death of their victims.</p>
<p>“This report continued to explain that because of strict traditions, some victims bear to live with offenders for years without any intervention by local authorities which might have led to solutions, until they lose their lives. Obviously, in 2007, deaths by domestic violence still increased, and this was not different from 2006.</p>
<p>“There were deaths because victims had been suffered many injuries. They had informed the local authorities to help to solve problems, but they get no response, because the authorities still consider domestic violence to be a domestic problem of a family, and they think they should not interfere to solve such problems.</p>
<p>“Also, it is often seen that the authorities are slow to intervene in domestic violence, and the keep things unattended unless somebody is injured or a victim is already dead before they go to investigate. This shows that regulations to stop domestic violence and to protect victims are not implemented efficiently.</p>
<p>“The authorities seem not to known the regulations that allow them to intervene and to prevent arguments in time at the initial stage, in order to avoid an escalation to domestic violence.</p>
<p>“It should be stressed that laws to stop domestic violence and to protect victims were approved by the National Assembly, and put into force on 24 October 2005. Though those laws became valid, they seem to be inefficient and not enforced at all, even though these laws allow the authorities, officials of the Ministry of Women's Affairs, and neighbors of a victim to intervene at a site of dispute, to prevent domestic violence without asking for a warrant from the courts, and the authorities closest by have the duty to intervene immediately in cases of domestic violence happening to start, in order to protect the victim. The authorities do not use these laws to solve domestic violence. Generally, institutions involved use the new criminal procedures to deal with domestic violence, which is against Article 8 of the new code of criminal procedures.” <em>Khmer Sthapana, Vol.1, #59, 26.7.2008</em></p>

<p>Recently a friend passed along this quote:</p>

<p>I've frequently talked about <a href="http://communionblog.wordpress.com/category/guns/" target="_blank">guns</a>, and several times explicitly mentioned that my basically liberal/libertarian political philosophy is completely comfortable with understanding the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution as being an individual right.  Part of this is in realizing that the world is a dangerous place and that you have to make reasonable preparations to take care of yourself.  And part of it is understanding that one check on the abuse of governmental power is a population which is armed and prepared to defend its civil liberties.</p>
<p>No, I have no illusions that I, with a few pistols and shotguns (or my <a href="http://communionblog.wordpress.com/2008/07/06/rockin/" target="_blank">flintlock</a>), am any kind of a challenge to a modern police force, let alone an actual army.  And that is the way it should be - no individual should be outside the law.  But collectively, a populace armed with tens of millions of such weapons presents a real check on tyranny.  The calculus of trying to use military-level force against the population of the US would have to take this into account; either overwhelming mass destruction (and I'm not saying it would have to include WMDs) would have to be employed, or such a military force would have to be willing to suffer significant casualties.  This is a substantial disincentive to anyone who might be willing to attempt such a thing.</p>
<p>Not that I can't imagine possible scenarios where this may come to pass.  In fact, one such is part of the 'history' of <a href="http://www.communionofdreams.com" target="_blank"><em>Communion of Dreams</em></a>, following the initial Fire Flu of the backstory.  I may get around to writing some of that one of these days, though there is already a fair amount of literature with that setting available.</p>
<p>Anyway, this rumination was prompted by my friend's quote, and on a nice <a href="http://www.metafilter.com/73593/M1911A1-Video-Remix" target="_blank">post</a> that I came across on MeFi that linked to a cool animation of assembling an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911" target="_blank">M1911 .45</a>:</p>

<p>If you would like to see an even better animation of how a 1911 functions, which allows you to hide or show various components as it operates, then go check out <a href="http://www.m1911.org/STI1911animation2.htm" target="_blank">this site</a>.  I had shot a fairly standard 1911 a good deal when I was young, but was never particularly enamored of that style of gun, preferring more 'modern' semi-auto pistols.  Until I was gifted with a <a href="http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=30" target="_blank">very nice one</a> from a friend's collection early this year - a <a href="http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_lda.php" target="_blank">modification</a> on the standard design which provides for the additional safety of a double-action trigger.  It is perhaps the sweetest-shooting pistol I have, even while being one of the most powerful ones.  There is a lot to be said for the venerable design of the 1911, a gun said to be designed by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Browning" target="_blank">a genius</a> for use by morons, with ballistic performance suitable for service in four wars .  Works for me.</p>
<p>Well, as I've said before, I know a lot of people don’t want a gun in their home.  Fine, don’t have one.  But if you are going to have one, learn to use it and store it safely.  And if you're going to have one, you certainly could do a lot worse than have a 1911 model .45 of some variation.</p>

If this is so, are Deepak Gurung and the other assailants under arrest? Why hasn’t the District Administration come forward with a statement to the press?<span>  </span></li>
<li class="MsoNormal">How is it possible for Deepak Gurung and the assailants to escape while the house being virtually under seize by the people?</li>
<li class="MsoNormal">The District Administration nor the Police have so far not come out with any statement on the death of Pramila Sharma? Why is there such a delay in the same?</li>
<li class="MsoNormal">After the death of Pramila Sharma and the subsequent public outburst Deepak Gurung’s House was burnt, vehicles burnt at numerous places, lawlessness and chaos reigned over the streets of Darjeeling for more than 12 hours, why did the Police not react. No arrests were made. As mobs moved around setting fire to vehicles, ransacking houses why did the police not react?</li>

<p>In a grim reminder of the terror attack at the Indian Institute of Sciences here in December 2005, crude bombs concealed near refugee camps, a drain and a bus shelter stuffed with nuts and bolts, exploded between 1.30 pm and 1.45 pm at Adugodi, Madivala, Nayandahalli, Mysore Road, Richmond Circle, Pantharapalya and Vittal Mallya Road. One explosion occured later in the evening.</span><!--more--><br />
<span class="StoryBodyText"><br />
Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in New Delhi two persons were killed and 12 injured in the blasts which the state police and the government were fighting shy of calling it a terror attack. They called the explosions an attempt by anti-national and anti-social elements to create panic and disrupt peace.</p>
<p>The farthest the Home Minister would go was to say that Bangalore was always a target of terrorist organisations and "this has happened".</p>
<p>A woman waiting at a bus stop in Madivala on the Bangalore-Hosur Road was killed in the blast, while her husband and another person were seriously injured.</p>
<p>Four of the blasts were between Hosur Road and Madiwala, the other three at Nayandahalli, Vittal Mallya Road and Richmond Circle, City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters.</p>
<p>Except in two places, low-intensity explosives were used for the blasts, which occurred within a few minutes of each other, he said.</p>

<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">The low-intensity explosions occured at eight areas of Maninagar, Isanpur, Narol circle, Bapunagar, Hatkeshwar and Sarangpur bridge, Sarkej and Odhav and created a wave of panic.</span><!--more--></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">There were two blasts in Maninagar and the first blast occurred in this area at 6.45 pm. The second blast here occurred near LG hospital. Maninagar is the constituency of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">The Ahmedabad blasts came a day after the multiple explosions in Bangalore in which two persons were killed. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Police said at least two had died and 25 injured, some of them seriously,in the blasts. The injured have been rushed to civil hospital and LG hospital. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said in New Delhi there were eight blasts. Unconfirmed reports said there were 13 blasts. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">The explosion in the sensitive Sarkej area occurred in a CNG bus. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Some of the bombs were believed to have been placed in cycles eerily similar to the Jaipur blasts on May 13 in which 65 persons died. A couple of bombs were reported to have been placed in tiffin boxes in a modus operandi similar to the explosions outside a Lucknow court last year. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the blasts and appealed for calm. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Mangled remains of a bus, cycles, motorcycles and an autorickshaw were seen at the blast sites which was splattered with blood. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Complete panic spread as people ran for their lives almost leading to a stampede in the areas ripped by the blasts. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">One body was seen on the road waiting to be retrieved by police who had a touch time to keep away curious onlookers and vehicles. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">One state government CNG bus in which one of the blasts occured was ripped through the middle. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">The outer body of the bus was completely smashed while surprisingly most of the seats remained intact including the CNG tank. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Blood was seen splattered inside the bus and near the foot board. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">The scene outside the civil hospital was tense with people thronging the palce even as ambulances with sirens were seen driving right between them. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">"There is heavy traffic jams in areas around Mani Nagar, the CM's constituency where one of the blasts took place Number of ambulances are also seen zipping around," said Udit, a city resident. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Forensic personnel were also rushed to the blast scenes. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition L K Advani, who represents Gandhinagar parliamentary cosntituency, accused the Centre of being soft on terror. </span></p>
<p style="margin-left:2pt;"><span style="margin-left:2pt;">Asked whether he felt that BJP-ruled states are being specifically targetted, Advani said "I can't say" but went on to add its is clearly a "sinister design" on the part of terrorists to disturb peace.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am baffled when people excuse hate filled messages by claiming “freedom of speech”.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">It is a wonderful gift to live in a nation that protects our right to speak out openly and passionately on our opinions and beliefs.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">I don't think however, that this right was ever intended as an excuse to use language to promote hate, fear, or violence.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">It seems to me that freedom of speech is better used to share wisdom, insights and personal experiences that lift up the whole of humanity and bring us closer together rather than tearing us further apart.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">It concerns me when I hear people in America using their wonderful freedom of speech to promote hatred towards others for a difference of religion or preference of political party.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">How did we get so confused on what freedom is?  How did we come to think that speaking out in hatred and violence empowers us to higher levels of freedom.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Empowerment comes not from hateful words or violent acts, rather from a centered place within where you realize your connection to All That Is.  Your experience of love and kindness makes you strong.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Fear and hatred make you weak, it makes you afraid.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Fear and hate always weaken us and push us further apart in our ideas and our being able to accept that we are all children of the same Energy, brothers and sisters sharing the same planet.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">I see mothers in stores popping their children to “make them behave” and have to wonder why they think violence towards their small children is effective.  It only teaches children that when you feel frustrated and don't know what else to do, you reach out and hurt someone you love.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">As women, mothers, sisters; let;s empower ourselves through words of kindness, thoughts of understanding and acts of love rather than staying in the place of a false sense of security that fear gives us.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">True freedom, is more than being able to say whatever you want, it's releasing yourself from fear and living fully who you are.  Freedom and personal empowerment promotes well being, prosperity, love, success and growth of acceptance and understanding.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Be Free in every area of your life experience by choosing thoughts and actions that lead to the betterment of All.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">You are free, you can be nothing else.  There is nothing to fear and fear only promotes more to fear.  It's the law of attraction at work.  Living free from fear and hatred is your right, this is the better feeling option.  It spreads Oneness and a sense of community and togetherness which heals and inspires all who come in contact with you to live their Best Self as well.</p>

<p class="spip" align="justify">Quand on interroge les filles sur les violences qu’elles peuvent ressentir de la part des garçons, on recueille les propos suivants (en 1996, dans un collège considéré comme défavorisé de la région parisienne, recherche de Monique Desjardin) :</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> Les garçons sont les plus forts.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> J’ai peur des coups, surtout des garçons.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> Pourquoi les garçons aiment-ils taper les filles ?</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">et, sous une autre rubrique :</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> Les garçons n’arrêtent pas de toucher les seins des filles.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> Ils bloquent les filles et leur baissent les jupes.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify"><img class="spip_puce" src="http://www.chiennesdegarde.org/puce.gif" border="0" alt="-" /> Ils surveillent les filles dans les toilettes car ils aiment voir  les filles nues.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">Les garçons se disent également agressés par d’autres garçons (il s’agit d’ailleurs toujours de violence masculine). Ils se retrouvent, par exemple, obligé de baisser leur pantalon devant leurs agresseurs.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">Mais, la perception du danger est différente quand on interroge les garçons ou les filles. Les garçons considèrent que c’est la situation qui est dangereuse (les agresseurs sont trop nombreux ou plus âgés par exemple). Mais quand les filles se font agresser, elles se considèrent toujours intrinsèquement plus faibles et sans défense. Elles ne songent pas à se regrouper pour se défendre et soupirent d’un air fataliste : "les garçons sont toujours les plus forts". En outre, elles pensent qu’il est dans la nature des garçons d’être ainsi et qu’on n’y peut rien, sinon tenter de s’en protéger.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">D’ailleurs, la réponse des adultes de l’école a été dans ce sens. Pour régler le problème des toilettes, ils y ont fait aller les élèves par groupes de sexes avant la récréation. Il s’agit en fait de résoudre les problèmes de mixités en séparant les sexes. Quand les filles viennent se plaindre des garçons à un enseignant homme, celui-ci répond "défendez-vous" et quand elles demandent assistance aux femmes, elles entendent : "Allez jouer plus loin". Finalement, les réponses (une réponse active de la part des hommes et une réponse passive de la part des femmes) sont les mêmes dans les deux cas : c’est aux filles de faire quelque chose pour ne plus subir les attaques des garçons.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">En somme, tout se passe comme si l’attitude des garçons était inévitable. La seule façon de réagir est de protéger les filles ou de leur apprendre à se battre, mais certainement pas de tenter une prise de conscience (ou même des punitions) chez les garçons.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">Il en résulte, d’une part, un processus de victimisation : les filles sont par nature les victimes des garçons, et d’autre part, un processus de culpabilisation : si je prends des coups, c’est parce que je suis restée trop près, je les ai cherchés, j’ai voulu me battre.</p>
<p class="spip" align="justify">Pour résumer : si les garçons regardent sous les jupes des filles, c’est parce que les filles ont des jupes. S’ils frappent les filles, c’est parce qu’il y a des filles.</p>

<p><!--/tpl:module/commun/tpl-module_header.html.php-->C'est une étude américaine publiée dans l'édition de novembre de la revue Pediatrics qui l'annonce. En revanche, ce genre de programmes n'entraînerait pas de comportements déviants de la part des petites filles qui les regardent entre l'âge de 2 et 5 ans.</p>
<p>Selon les résultats de cette enquête menée auprès de 8.000 familles américaines, les comportements violents des petits garçons se manifestent lorsqu'ils atteignent l'âge de 7 ans, alors qu'ils ont regardé des programmes violents entre l'âge de 2 et 5 ans. Parmi les comportements "déviants" observés, les scientifiques ont noté le fait de trahir des proches, de ne jamais ressentir de culpabilité ou de regret, d'avoir un comportement destructeur, de désobéir à l'école, et d'avoir des problèmes avec les professeurs.</p>
<p>L'étude montre que les dessins animés violents, ainsi que les retransmissions de matchs de football américain peuvent entraîner des comportements agressifs chez les enfants. Mais aucune incidence d'autres types de programmes n'a été démontrée. Parmi les divertissements jugés violents, les auteurs de l'étude avaient répertorié Power Rangers, Star Wars, Space Jam et Spiderman. En revanche, les dessins animés comme Toy Story ont été considérés comme non violents.</p>
<p>D'après le Dr. Christakis, un des auteurs de l'étude, de l'Institut de recherche de l'Hôpital des enfants de Seattle "ces résultats montrent que les parents doivent être bien informés et être très sélectifs dans le choix des médias regardés par leurs enfants". Ces choix sont d'autant plus importants que, selon lui, "le comportement des enfants a des conséquences directes sur leur vie sociale, à l'adolescence et à l'âge adulte".</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Une nouvelle étude menée par Information Solutions Group aux États-Unis montre que la moitié des parents ou grand-parents américains n'autorisent pas leurs enfants/petit-enfants à jouer aux jeux-vidéo violents. Rien de vraiment étonnant. Mais là où les chiffres deviennent intéressants, c'est qu'ils montrent une bien plus grande tolérance à l'égard des garçons que des filles, cette proscription s'élevant à 37% pour les uns et 60% pour les autres.</p>
<p>Le sexe mâle serait-il plus à l'abri du "choc psychologique" provoqué par la violence à l'écran ? Bien sûr que non, et le Dr. Carl Arinoldo explique que <em>"c'est une perspective dépassée, mais évidemment partagée par la plupart des parents, même aujourd'hui"</em>. D'ailleurs, le psychologue ne manque pas de souligner <em>"qu'il est généralement mieux accepté que les garçons s'impliquent dans des activités tournées vers l'action ou la violence (comme les sports de combat) que les filles".</em></p>
<p>Pratiquer le judo est une chose, mais exploser des zombis sanguinolents à coups de hache est-il mieux digéré dans la construction mentale de l'enfant en bas âge  de sexe masculin que féminin ? Voilà une belle vraie fausse idée.</p>
<p>Le fait est que si les films d'horreur sont généralement proscris par les parents à leurs enfants sans distinction de sexe, le jeu vidéo est plus considéré comme une activité proprement masculine, comme de jouer à la guerre avec de petits soldats de plomb. Dès lors, les parents s'en méfient moins malgré l'extraordinaire violence que peuvent manifester certains d'entre eux. Rien d'étonnant à ce que la censure les concernant se montre de plus en plus intransigeante ; pour éviter d'en arriver là, un préjugé doit tomber, et faire disparaître une fausse idée est toujours un chemin beaucoup plus compliqué à prendre que d'instaurer une interdiction.</p>

<title><![CDATA[World without hope: the real horror of horror movies]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many reviewers of the recent blockbuster hit <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/">The Dark Knight</a> have stressed the film's 'disturbing', 'tortured' or even 'twisted' portrayal of evil in Heath Ledger's Joker. And it certainly is all those things. But these reviewers cannot have seen many straight-up horror flicks to have such a reaction. In The Dark Knight the Joker shoots people, blows up buildings, pokes pencils into people's eyes and threatens to cut them a new smile with an exacto-knife. Psychotic and disturbing to be sure, but compared to the violence portrayed in movies like <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450278/">Hostel</a>, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387564/">Saw</a>, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454970/">Turistas</a>, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264508/">Dagon</a>, or further back in time <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078935/">Cannibal Holocaust</a>, the Joker can't help but pale in comparison: dismemberment, mutilation, flaying alive, impalement, disembowlment, rape and the list goes on.</p>
<p>Out of morbid curiosity I watched a clip online from a death scene in the movie Dagon (no, I certainly won't link back to it). It repulsed me, horrified me and left me depressed for the rest of the afternoon, the gruesome images playing over and over in my head. What depressed me more than actually watching the scene, though, was reading the comments beneath it: "Holy s--t! That was the best death scene EVER!"; "That was totally awesome!" The truly horrifying thought is that, judging from the number of horror movies made every year, many people seem to have an insatiable appetite for seeing gore onscreen. They take a perverse pride in being able to 'stomach' extreme acts of violence and talk down condescendingly to people who can't 'take it'. If ever there was an argument for the truth of the Christian doctrine of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_depravity">total depravity</a>, this is one (another might be conjured from the incredibly lucrative online pornography business).</p>
<p>Apart from the visceral response evoked by gory violence, there is a deeper effect that is potentially much more damaging: the indoctrination of young viewers into a worldview without hope or redemption. Dagon is based on a novella by H.P. Lovecraft, for whom the main <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.P._Lovecraft#Themes">theme</a> of his work was the incomprehensibility and utter alien-ness of the cosmos. For Lovecraft to perceive the true nature of ultimate reality was to go absolutely insane in the face of entities relentlessly hostile to human well-being and too powerful to be overcome. What makes Dagon not only revolting but horrifying and depressing is the fact that in the end there is no escape from the terror that is Dagon. There is no overcoming the chaotic forces which make a mockery of human decency and threaten to undo the very fabric of ordered life. No hope, no prospects except to merge with the horror, open your mind to it and in the process lose yourself forever.</p>
<p>Is that in fact the world we live in? Sometimes it seems that way. After all, most if not all of the tortures so fiendishly depicted in horror films have been practiced throughout human history up until the present day. The only consistent theme of world history seems to be man's incredible inhumanity to man. Is there any hope that all of this horror might be redeemed, caught up and transformed in a vision of life without pain or sorrow or crying? Often it is hard to answer in the affirmative.</p>
<p>And yet...I refuse to lose hope. Somewhere in all this sound and fury there are to be found glimpses of a grand, pervasive redemptive effort that hint at just such a glorious future. Along with the horror there is also kindness, decency and beauty. Chaos will not triumph in the end. The Joker will not have the last laugh.</p>
<p>But as we wait for that day with anticipation and try to make it a reality, for God's sake please stop indulging in horror movies which glamorize a world without hope. I am not in favor of censorship by any means, but I pity those who feel they must express themselves by making and consuming such ugliness. The apostle Paul once again had the best counsel: "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." (Philippians 4:8 )</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I wanted to revise my question, but first, a little diatribe about <em>Sin City</em>.</p>

<p>My interest in this film has been such ever since it came out and I just never got around to seeing. And, the lazy little thing I am, I didn't research it much either. I knew it was based on a graphic novel series by Frank Miller and I knew that Robert Rodriguez directed it, and I also knew it was violent and Jessica Alba played a stripper.</p>
<p>What I did not now that is was the most brutal, 2 hour woman-hating blood bath I could ever endure, aside from watching a snuff porn.</p>
<p>I am very disturbed that many people I know, including intelligent, feminist women, could enjoy, let alone LOVE this film. For those who have not seen it, let me give you the run-down: 3 vignettes-- one ("That Yellow Bastard") about an aging cop who saves a little girl from a pedophile, and then when she grows up to be a stripper, proceeds to almost sleep with her, and then when she gets kidnapped by rapist AGAIN, tells her not scream, and then we are treated to a long, porny sequence of her being tied up and whipped. The second story ("The Hard Goodbye") is about the revenge a deformed psychopath (who has a perpetually naked lesbian parole officer) tries to take on whoever killed his "perfect woman"--a prostitute who slept with him for protection; did I mention during the journey he slaps around her twin sister? And finally, "The Big Fat Kill" stars a band of scanitly clad prostitutes who are good with guns, have a silent Japanese girl killing machine on their side, but still need the woman-beating Clive Owen to save them from a spot of trouble.</p>
<p>Let explain a few things: a violent woman is not empowered if she is also a sex object. She is also not empowered if she has no VOICE. Not one woman narrated a story in this film. All the women were sex workers, except for the lesbian parole officer whose boobs were on display, oh, EVERY TIME SHE WAS ON SCREEN!!! A woman who wields a gun is not empowered if she is still slapped around by men.</p>
<p>These women had no agency. Yes, I understand the point of <em>Sin City</em> is to depict a setting where there is no MORALS left. But why why why why WHY WHY WHY does that have to mean women must be both sexually degraded and violently punished? And it's not just within the context of the story? What about the lingering shots of women being tortured or abused? What about the needless stripping sequences? (Nancy's story would have been just as powerful if she was not a stripper?) What about all the boobs, the fucking boobs? I'll tell you why: because film-makers seem to think the only reason men would be interested in a movie is if some hottie was shaking her goods on screen. It should be insulting to both men and women. Furthermore, the silencing of women somehow makes the male characters, otherwise violently boring ingrates, more interesting. It gives them purpose: whether that be saving a silenced woman or punishing a woman.</p>
<p>And the story I keep getting over and over is that the women in <em>Sin City </em>are badasses. However, they are only aloud to be badasses in the context of a male fantasy: a stripper who is "strong enough" not to scream when being whipped by a rapist. A silent, exotic Japanese ningette. A half-naked prostitute, toting a gun and turned on by her boyfriend slapping her around.</p>
<p>That leads me to this: Are there any female superheroes who are not pornified? That is to say, they do not  have breasts all ajiggle and strategically-skimpy outfits? Are they functional or eye candy? Can they have male fans for reasons other than their appearance?</p>
<p>Now, I know the blog sphere has been a-buzz with the rad fem vs sex pos  debate: Well, hear DRF: There is feminist, and there is not feminist. You can enjoy sex, hate it, be apathetic towards it, and still be a feminist. The end. I love sex. But I hate <em>Sin City.</em></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Joker’s philosophy, simply defined, is a philosophy that values anarchy over the sake of rules. This is, obviously, the philosophy of very few people in the world, and with good reason. Most people today are staunch realists. The Joker seems to despise these realists, who only seem to create plans that never work, and decides to make his life about one plan that will always seemingly reveal some truth, chaos in order.</p>

It is quite obvious that the Joker has some unresolved issues. The archetypal example of his unresolved nature is perhaps his scars. The Joker always seems to be aware of these scars, cuts that extent from the edges of his lips that form a “bigger smile.” And, for some reason, the Joker tells two different stories to two different people regarding their origins. To one man he says something to the effect of that his father was a drunk and that he liked to rough people up. One day he was more drunk that normal and started to hit his mother. The Joker, only a boy at the time, saw his mother have to defend herself with and knife and wasn’t enjoying himself enough and apparently received a “smile.” Why so serious? The second story, told to Katie Holmes’s character, Rachel Dawes, at a party for Harvey Dent. The Joker finds Rachel and grabs her, wanting to know where Harvey is located so he can kill him. When Rachel won’t speak, he sets into a different story. This story was about his wife, who, getting in too deep with gambling sharks has her face hideously disfigured, or carved as the Joker says. The joker says he just wants her to smile again, and does it to himself. Ironically, his wife can’t stand the site of him and leaves. (The comics tell a different story, in which he falls into acid which makes his hair turn green, his lips bright red and turn into a permanent smile, and his skin very pale. O’ that strong comic book acid, how you disfigure in so many in so many ways!)</p>
<p>At least in the movie, the Joker’s scars are his message. He is a freak, for whichever story you like best. The truth is that the Joker is almost definitely lying about the origins of his scars. To the Joker, his scars are important because they remind him of his ideals. He is an anarchist. He doesn’t believe in the conventions of the world, only the conventions that will distract people from the illusions of the world. The joker, despite his trickery, at least makes an attempt to change the world for the better. I suppose the people that got off those ferries in the social experiment valued their lives more than ever. If the Joker could find a different way to make the changes he desired in the world, perhaps he would have been likened to Gandhi instead of an insane criminal with issues. The Joker sees the illusion of polarity in the world, he simply tries too hard to help others and not himself. The outcome is violence, torture, pain, and suffering.</p>
