This Bastard reporter has learned that Lucky and Buddy, a mixed breed and a Labrador who were Diane Sue Whalen and Donald Roy Siegfried’s sex trained hounds, will both be taken to a no-kill sanctuary next month for rehabilitation.

These poor innocent pooches are now finally receiving the proper kind of ‘puppy love’.

Earlier this month a judge ordered that both Lucky and Buddy be examined thoroughly by a veterinarian to learn if the dogs would be suitable for rehabilitation and eventual adoption into a loving caring family that will not want to use them as bestial sex toys.

The vet pronounced both dogs physically and mentally suitable for adoption.  Then cut their nuts off.

Diane Sue Whalen’s adult son found more than 150 video tapes of her performing sex acts with both Lucky and Buddy, as well as a blue heeler named Merlin owned by Donald Roy Siegfried.

After viewing all 150 tapes because he ‘just couldn’t stop looking’, and vomiting repeatedly, he turned them over to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

Don and Di were both charged with felony crimes against nature, while only Don was charged with filming the dastardly deeds.

All dogs involved were immediately taken into custody.

When I asked Mr. Siegfried’s attorney how anyone could video tape such sick sexual acts, and more than 150 times, he explained that Don had told him, ‘I just couldn’t stop looking!’

He also told me that while Diane’s son began vomiting while viewing the films, Don Siegfried began masturbating while taping them.

“I know I’m the man’s attorney,” he began, “but he is one sick freak!  And Diane is one dirty kooter!”

A non profit organization, the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, has said that both Lucky and Buddy are doing quite well and no longer try to hump their human caretakers since being neutered.

The Tulsa County Sherriff’s Office teams with the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals with cases involving animal cruelty.

So if you ever intend to rape an animal, be prepared to face the criminal consequences and the forced humiliation of writers such as myself.

This Bastard reporter is pleased that these two dogs, Lucky and Buddy, now have a second chance at life.

Most pet owners understand that leaving a pet in a car in the summer can kill them.  Unfortunately, not many realize just how quickly the effects of heatstroke can set in for a dog or cat.

Heatstroke is a condition that develops gradually at first but accelerates over time.  It is very easy for the early signs of heatstroke to not be noticed, and for the pet to be in an emergency situation fairly quickly.

On a summer day, a vehicle acts like an oven.  It holds the heat inside, and that heat becomes very intense even on days that don’t seem too warm. On an summer day, for example, even with the windows open, the temperature inside a car can climb to 120 degrees in just minutes and with humidity, it may go even higher. Because a pet’s normal body temperature is 101-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, he/she can only tolerate a body temperature of 107-108 degrees for only a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage…or death.

If you are going to do errands where you'll have to get out of your vehicle this summer, do what is best for your pet by leaving them home with proper shelter and water, or inside to enjoy the comforts of air conditioning. 

Dogs should be walked in the early morning and early to later evening to keep them comfortable during the summer weather.  Pets should be provided with plenty of fresh, clean, cool water.  They should also be provided with shade.  They should be check upon frequently to make sure they are not too hot, especially if they are left outside.

The typical signs of heatstroke are:
-Panting
-High body temperature
-Dehydration
-Red mouth/eye membranes
-Rapid, irregular heart rate
-Diarrhea
-Weakness, looking dazed
-Coma

A heatstroke is an emergency situation where your pet needs immediate medical attention.

First, consult with a professional dog handler or a professional dog trainer to learn about certain dog personalities of different breeds, and try to match what you want with what a particular dog has to offer. Also, talk to a veterinarian about your choice of a purebred or mixed breed dog. The professional trainers and vets' opinions are invaluable, as they handle many different dogs every day and have first hand knowledge of the characteristics, and qualities of different types of dogs and breeds.

You can choose between a purebred dog or a mixed breed dog. The advantages of purebred dogs are consistency of appearance, size, coat type, and color. If you decide on a German Shepherd breed, you can be certain it will grow to a certain size...It will be similar to other German Shepherds in appearance...Its color, temperament, coat, etc will be similar to other German Shepherds. Purebred dogs generally have more genetic faults and deformities than do mixed breeds.

Mixed breed puppies may mature to look like their dam, their sire (if known) or neither. Their coats may be rough, smooth, or wiry. Adult mixed breeds are difficult to ascertain, as are their expressions. These variations are multiplied when either or both parents are from mixed backgrounds. Mixed breeds usually have a certain amount of heterosis ( increased vigor or other superior qualities that come from crossbreeding), which, under some circumstances, result in stronger and more disease-resistant dogs. A mixed breed puppy is likely to have a very individual personality, seemingly unrelated to either of its parents.

The temperament of mixed breeds are often quieter and more stable than those of purebreds, although this characteristic is not consistent. Temperament is partially genetic and partly the result of experience and training. Many purebreds have a notably quiet temperament, and an occasional mixed breed is unpredictable.

Before you select a purebred or a mixed breed, decide what you expect of the dog. If you have a desire to exhibit it in conformation shows, obedience trials, field trials, herding tests, or other American Kennel Club sponsored events, you must start out with a purebred.

If you want a companion, a family pet, or a child's dog and have no aspirations of winning blue ribbons, a mixed breed should fill your need nicely. Mixed breed puppies and adult dogs are plentiful, both from shelters and private homes. They cost less to buy, and may be easier to handle. Mixed breed dogs can compete in Frisbee contests, 4-H obedience, and non-AKC agility trials, and are included in the AKC-sponsored Canine Good Citizen program.

I have written about BioBags before in my 100th post, concerning some composting ideas I had.  I really think their concept is a good one, but I have still not actually tried them. :) Anyway, I came across these Biobag Dog Waste Bags and BioBag Cat Pan Liners and thought they sound like great ideas.

I don't have a dog, but live in NYC where everyone has to pick up after their dogs. I always think about how many plastic bags these people must go through, just to throw away dog poo. This bag is a great idea. It would also be a great idea in New York City to have by every other garbage can be a compost can. Just for dog owners to throw their dog poo in, instead of throwing it into the regular garbage cans. Then the Parks Department could compost the dog poo and use it as fertilizer in all the City Parks. You're welcome New York City Department of Parks and Recreation! :)

Please check with your community for disposal options.

I think the cat liners are another great idea for people who use them. I myself do not as I have scoopable litter and then the litter pan itself gets clean out fully. I guess a bag would make it easier to clean...we will think about it.

Cat waste should not be composted, as its composition can be quite toxic (What? Toxic...I had no idea. :P). Cat waste should always be scooped from the litter box and then put in your trash. There are a number of new biodegradable cat litters on the market. We also do not recommend flushing it down the toilet because cat poop may endanger sea otters.

Using these biodegradable cat pan liners to dispose of the remaining biodegradable litter makes good environmental sense.

Biodegradable cat pan liners are non-allergenic. Cats can be allergic to plastic and other known allergens. Allergies usually build up over time from constant contact with the allergen. Calicos, Tortiseshells, Black cats and Siamese cats are more prone to allergies than other breeds.

If you suspect your cat has an allergy (red, itchy rashes), consult your veterinarian to determine the source. It is best to use hard-fired ceramic bowls, instead of molded plastic, for serving your cat food. Using a biodegradable cat litter made naturally from renewable grain crops may protect your cat from certain chemicals. Using BioBag non-allergenic liners is an environmentally safe way to further protect your pet.

I am a single mom to the best 13 year old kid in the world and a few months ago I was "downsized" from my job at the local emergency vet which I had taken after an 8 year career as a dogwalker.

Well, well. 2 posts about Prince in 24 hours!  

 I know but we had to take him to the Vet today. 

 His little nose either got scratched by Jake when he was here, or he scratched it from allergies. 

 I've seen both happening, but anyhow, his nose looks rough and not at all like a regular doggie nose. 

 He was also licking it a lot.  Poor baby!  I managed to get him an appointment, even though they do appts. only 2 days a week. 

 It's worth it, military bases only charge 2 (that's two) dollars to see the vet.

 Plus really cheap prices for medicine. 

 It turns out that he needed an ointment to clear up his nose. 

 The doc was also very concerned about a small round pink spot on the roof of his mouth toward the back. 

 He said to watch that, it could be a tumor and if he had any trouble swallowing to bring him back.

I have lots of allergies - #1 is Wheat Based Dog Foods and I need my Rice Based Food and my Medication. The only food that that doesn’t make me sick is Purina Weight Management Formula ( rice based with less wheat than the other so-called Rice based foods including Purina’s Rice & Chicken or Turkey formula’s) & Paul Newman’s Dog Cookies.

Bill had only been to America one time.  He didn't have much experience with American stores.  Thus, he loved to visit our mall and to go grocery shopping with me.  He gave me the money to buy all of our food during his two week stay.  Bill liked helping me pick out the groceries.  He also loved frozen yogurt and ice cream.  We rarely ate a meal without some time of frozen dessert.  Phillip didn't abandan me with the hosting.  He came over every day to visit with Bill. 

Sandy had her 16th birthday while Bill was staying with us.  She was determined to pass her driver's permit road test the first time--and she did.  It wasn't long until Sandy got a job at Arby's.  She enjoyed working at Arby's a great deal.  She worked the drive thru most of the time.  This gave Sandy some much needed spending money.  There is a verse in the book of Proverbs that says that laughter and a merry heart are good for the soul.  Our family was laughing once again.  We were healing from so many wounds. 

The after shocks of the summer stayed with me for many years.  I could laugh and enjoy my family.  However, I could no longer express my feelings with journaling.  I had kept a journal since Ben and Sandy started Kindergarten.  I was frozen inside.  I just couldn't put pen to paper.  My bounderies for living were shrinking, too.  I wasn't comfortable leaving our town.  I felt safe going to the grocery store, the mall, the schools, the pharmacy and our doctor.  However, I wouldn't leave the city limits.  It was a type of agoraphobia.  I couldn't shake it.  Our family had spent years dealing with psychologists.  I had no interest in starting up anymore visits to the mental health center.  I suffered deeply. 

Although your dad and I were no longer hostile with each other--there was still a gap that just couldn't be filled.  Jim had made some attempts to be in church for several years.  Now, he joined me in staying home each Sunday.  We couldn't reach each other. We never prayed together.  We met each other where we could and sometimes had a great deal of fun.  Mostly, we were miles apart in our thinking about everything in life.

You, Vera, had a very successful year as an eighth grader.  You were chosen to take high school Algebra in the eighth grade.  You started talking about your dreams of becoming a veterinarian. We all loved animals.  The antics of Lucy and Sugar, our dogs, kept us rolling.  I still enjoyed walking them both for long, long walks.  It was great therapy.  You, in particular, took more interest in science and math because of your dream of becoming a veterinarian.Meanwhile, another dream was birthing that would be for the well being of our family.

In April of l993--there was finally hope that Jim would be able to get a better paying job.  For eleven years--your dad had worked in a little print shop.  He never got any raises.  We had no health insurance.  The only way we made it financially through your accident was the fact that the newspaper that you delivered  newspapers for---had accidentl health insurance for their newspaper carriers.  It was a twenty four hour accidental policy.  And it paid for about 90 percent of your medical treatment.  Therefore, we were so excited when one of our neighbors told your Dad that there was an opening at his factory. At last, we would have family medical insurance.

Jim applied for the job and passed the first interview.  He then had to take some math and English tests.  He passed those, too.  The next step was a medical exam.  Then a few days later, he land the job. Sandy also started a new job as the assistant circulation secretary at our local newspaper.  She got this job through her high school business co-op program.

You, Vera, had another accident the day your Dad and Sandy started their new jobs.  You got bit by a chow at one of the homes you were collecting money for the newspaper.  It was a deep wound and I had to take you to the emergency room.  The chow was ordered to be confined to the inside of the owner's home for two weeks.  I had to dress your leg three times a day and you had to take powerful antibiotics.   Nevertheless, we were a happy family.  Life was taking a brighter turn for us.  Most of all, Ben never got in trouble with us or the anyone else the rest of his life.  Writing this in the year 2001--I can honestly say that is the truth. 

My sister has been working at an animal hospital and is now pursuing a residency. I am actually quite relieved for her. The residency will be breath of fresh air in comparison to the internship she just experienced, erm, survived.

She called me around 6 a.m. a few weeks back. I was still in bed. I didn't even recognize her voice at first. She was so groggy that she was actually slurring her words. I had a tough time recognizing any of the words she was attempting to string together. Every so often I could hear these loud, scratching sounds in the background.

"I hit the median again!" she was telling me. This happened at least three times.

She had not slept for three days. Days were running into each other. Her only break was  the dangerous 40-minute commute to and from work to freshen up and squeeze in a nap, if you dared.

I recognize my sister is a pretty remarkable person. She has flourished in the top veterinary programs in the country. You could fit the number of specialists like her throughout the world into a small stadium. She can still excel at her job with little to no sleep, day in and day out. People always turn to her to fill in for them, but she is so specialized that there are very few people available to fill in for her when she needs the time off.

She tells me when she knows she is under pressure, performing a surgery, something just clicks and she is suddenly "on." She knows what needs to be done, and doesn't let her lack of a basic human need interfere with her ability to treat her patients.

I don't think those in the medical profession adequately understand how unique that is. I have asked her on many occasions how she can handle the death, and the death under such stressful situations as not sleeping for days. I ask her how she can handle the euthanasia, as if I expect to hear violins in the background as she imparts this wise philosophical statement about mortality. It never happens like that. Just like I go to work and call sources and write articles, she goes to work and treats animals, even saves lives. It's her job. That's what she does.

She will be starting a new job in a new place. I will be returning to the job that I loved.

I wish her the best and a little rest.

Upon owning a dog, you will have to learn basic dog care. This means, as the proud owner of a canine, you now have to feed, bathe and train your pet. Here a few dog care tips you should know.

1. Get your dog a collar and an ID tag with your name, address and telephone number written on it. It will make identification of your dog easier and will have a higher possibility of being returned to you.

2. Check for dog license in your area. If your community requires a dog license, you best get Fido one too.

3. Have your pet visit the veterinarian for his physical check-up. Dog care is making sure your pet is in good health. If there are any concerns, the dog can be treated immediately.

4. Dog care requires tough love. Have your pet vaccinated.

5. Proving dog care requires a good shelter. You can build him a doghouse for when he goes outside to play and a doggie bed when he’s inside the house. Dogs are very clingy creatures and crave for companionship so they may spend more time inside the house.

6. Food in dog care is essential. A balanced diet with vitamin supplements and readily available water is essential to any dog regime. Ask your vet about the proper foods.

7. Dog hygiene is an essential part of dog care. The eyes, ears and teeth of your pet must be cleaned. At the first sign of abnormalities like soreness or discoloration, go to your veterinarian.

8. Train your dogs. Dog care is not only physical. As the owner, you are responsible for your dog mentally too. Dogs need a stimulating activity to develop their skills and keep disciplined.

9. Play with your pets. Dog care requires exercise for the pooch. Run with him, play ball or just spend your time with him.

10. Have your dog neutered. Dog care experts say that those animals that get surgery tend to have less behavioral problems and live longer. And by getting your dog neutered, you can help reduce pet overpopulation.

Dog care can be very demanding but its beneficial for the owner and pet. A healthy well-being will make their time together as great as possible. Just like taking care of a child, following your dog care routine will prevent any problems in the future.

More and more businesses are realizing the increasing industry of dog care. Go to your favorite store and you’ll see a variety of dog care products available to dog owners. The latest craze to hit this industry is institutions that cater to dogs. These are hotels or restaurants that offers dog care service from their own doggie menu, to a daycare for dogs and even a doggie spa.

Whether you choose a professional dog care institution to take care of your baby or just skip the extravagance and train poochie yourself, remember that your dog is another living creature that needs your love, time and attention. It may seem so tiring but it’s worth it in the end.

Dr. Carol Osborn, DVM, an AVMA member, is the author of “Urine Spraying and Cats” and “Naturally Healthy Dogs”, among other titles.  Dr. Osborn recommends Rescue Remedy to treat the fear, and anxiety often induced by changes in the environment.

Animals suffer from anxiety and fear from common occurrences such as loud noise such as thunder in a weather storm or the pounding and explosions of construction sites; and in other instances from things that we humans cherish such as our 4th of July firework displays. Facing new surroundings and separation often leads to anxiety and anguish and secondarily to misbehavior.

Rescue Remedy comes in spray, pastilles and droppers and now has been reformulated for delicate animals and pets – Rescue Remedy Pet, says Bettina Rasmussen, CEO of BachFlower.com.

Dr. Mahaney, explains that administering Rescue Remedy Pet is simple. Add 4 drops to the animal´s drinking water with every fresh bowl of water, add to the food or spray directly into the mouth.

She had to go in for a Booster shot. After much research, it seems like there's no possibility of her ever catching any of the things that she's getting vaccinated for, but better safe than sorry I guess. She's supposed to have all of these shots within our first 2 months. That's a lot of stuff they're going to pump into her:

• Parvo virus
• Corona virus
• Distemper
• Hepatitis
• Parainfluenza
• Canine Adenovirus (this and all the above are combined into one shot "7-in-1". For small pups, it's recommended to get boosters one visit at time, and spaced out 1-2 weeks.)
• Deworming
• Rabies (required by law, research recommends getting it every 3 years.)
• Leptospirosis (optional, but not all vets will tell you this. Only needed if you take your dog into forests/hunting.)

• Bordetella ("Kennel Cough"- optional, people seem to love telling you it's necessary. Only needed if you plan to board your dog in a kennel or show it in dog shows)
• Lyme disease (optional but not all vets will tell you this. Only needed if you live in the forest, take your dog camping, or live in a highly tick infested region.)
• Giardia (optional, people seem to love telling you it's necessary. Only needed if you live by rivers, go camping, or plan to let your pup lick dirty puddles on the road.)

The shots must really hurt her, because after the first vet visit she was really sore around the spot where she got the shot and she would cry and whine when we picked her up. It was pretty scary, since she didn't start getting yippy until 2 days after she got the shot, so we were freaking out trying to figure out why she wouldn't let us touch her. But this 2nd time, she started getting sore the same night, a few hours later, and was very sensitive around the spot where she got the shot. So now we know. Definitely the shot.

We weighed her again at the vet. She grew a whole pound heavier in a week. She went from 2.3 to 3.2 lbs. in 10 days! That's amazing. If she keeps growing at this rate, she might turn into...

This is a preservative that I was unfamiliar with until I saw a cat food (Castor and Pollux) advertising that they did not include it in their Natural Ultramix product. Not being familiar with Ethoxyquin, I checked up on it in google and found the above link. It's written by a veterinarian about the effects he saw in dogs that were switched to foods containing 'E' from those not containing it. It's really disturbing, and I felt like I should forward this information to my friends and family that have pets. I learned a lot about animal nutrition while I was studying Veterinary Technology and in my own efforts to deal with my cats' food allergy issues, and this was never mentioned anywhere. I was already planning on switching my cats to the Ultramix in the very near future, and this new information makes it seem even more imperative.
 
Keep a lookout on the ingredients lists for this 'preservative,' but keep in mind there are loopholes that make it possible for companies to exclude it. This site warns: "Ethoxyquin is banned from use in foods for human consumption except for the use of very small quantities as a color preservative for spices. Note that ethoxyquin is used to preserve fish meal, which will not be disclosed on the dog food label since it is added before the fish meal reaches the manufacturing plant. In general, unless the manufacturer provides a statement on their web site that the fish meal in their food does not contain ethoxyquin, you can assume that is does. Contact the manufacturer if you are unsure."  It's not just cat and dog foods, either; I just looked at the food I just switched my mice over to a few days ago because it's 'healthier' than the seed diet they were getting, and it includes Ethoxyquin.
 
I've included a (short) list of foods I know do not include this chemical. It's by no means all-inclusive, but it's a start.
