I’m titling this blog after a story I’m writing. There’s not much more to say abou

I'm titling this blog after a story I'm writing. There's not much more to say about that for now, except that I want to assure you I don't really think I can fly!

Who am I?

I'm a mom, wife, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, and, well, me. I'm in my thirties. My daughter is autistic, and I may well be mildly autistic. In fact, I'm pretty sure I am. I don't have an official diagnosis for now. As my doctor put it, would knowing for sure change anything other than knowing? That's not as cold as it sounds. I'm already working on a lot of things, and ninety-nine percent of it applies even if I had an official Asperger Syndrome label.

Other things about me...

I'm a Virgo. I'm not into astrology that much, but my personality matches my sign to an almost frightening degree. I like things just so in a lot of ways. An observer might debate that claim, especially if they see how messy and disorganized my house and mind are. I think it's a thing where the subconscious picks and chooses what's important to address.

I'm a stay-at-home mom, aka a SAHM (I pronounce it "Suh-hmm"--just for fun). My daughter is autistic. She's close to the middle of the autistic spectrum. Don't know what that is? Google "Autistic Spectrum Disorder" or ASD. She's six.

My daughter talks, albeit softly and, at times, indecipherable. I continue to marvel when she says anything complex, even though it occurs more often all the time. She doesn't use the toilet if she can help it. I keep telling her I'm going to puke on her feet one of these times from cleaning poop off her butt. If that sounds mean, well, I don't apologize. I just want her to know it's a possibility. Despite the speech and bathroom issues, I can't say as I've ever met a sweeter, more gentle little girl. She has a big heart and soul. I don't think she's retarded, just reserved. At least, I hope that's the case. No one knows for sure. She's an enigma. I adore her.

I also have a son who is under a year old. He seems to be doing great. I always add "knock on wood." I try not to be superstitious, I really try, but I keep having things happen after saying they haven't so far. It's a false correlation, I know. Still, "Knock on Wood!"

My husband is not necessarily the kind of guy you might expect me to have married. He's very left brained, while I am very right brained. Where I might write a story or draw a picture, he'll work on computer code. Where I follow my heart, he believes in efficiency. (Note: I said efficiency, not logic.) Where I talk to much, he'll keep quiet. I don't think I need to go on.

I come from a highly dysfunctional family. As much as I try to avoid adverbs, this time it's necessary. Most families are dysfunctional to some degree or another. Mine is the kind of family that makes "normal" people alternately cringe or blankly stare. (Oops, two more adverbs!)

If I don't get more organized--or more mature--my little family here will be dysfunctional. I think most people expect their grown-up lives to be just so, to take what didn't work during their child- and young adulthoods and fix it for their kids. That's a joke! We make our own messes that our kids will feel the need to clean.

My hope is to share what it's like to march to the beat of me, my own drummer. I'm not alone in how I relate to the world. I don't think I am, anyway. Maybe, through the use of my writing and art skills, people like me can make more sense to "mainstream" or "normal" people. And if not, at least I can show the value of being an oddball. After all, who do we remember: Joe Shmoe, or Albert Einstein?

Some of my favorite oddballs: Mark Twain (Sam Clemens was related to my family), Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Steven Hawking, Ben Franklin, Einstein... Me

A metà fra realtà e finzione.

"vestito rosso", Annachiara Zincone.

Is this video controversial? Does depicting Jesus as a gay man “movin’ & groovin’” to some happy disco offend people?

I’ve written at length about how Jesus is portrayed in art because I find it interesting to learn why certain cultural and ethnic groups turn a man of quite clearly Jewish and middle eastern ancestry and “recast” him in the image of the artist. The bible says humans are created in God’s image, yet aren't we really just creating God in our image?

So what is this particular video trying to tell us? Well, first of all, it’s funny. Putting aside the “blasphemy” of taking a holy figure and making him dance along to Gloria Gaynor on the streets of L.A., we have to admit that Jesus is a malleable public figure readily available for satire. In this particular example, the video ends where the “gay” Jesus is hit by a bus. Aside from the humor, can we also read into this ending to say that because of the “blasphemy” this man is indulging in that his “death” is brought upon by a higher power? In other words, could God be driving that bus to stamp out the sin of the actor? Or is the video saying that no matter how hard the gay community tries to embrace the good aspects of Christianity, conservative society will always come along to crush (hit and run) the movement?

Very often satire is misunderstood by the people being satirized, but who exactly is being satirized in this video? Christianity? Homosexuality? Gloria Gaynor? While it’s easy for people to get worked up over the literal content of such satire, we should always be willing to dig deeper into the meanings of things. A good strong belief in something (religion, for example) should be able to withstand scrutiny and criticism and the believers should be expected to have a deep understanding of what they believe in. When people respond to such criticisms and interpretations of their beliefs, too often they respond with knee-jerk reactions because they are offended on a superficial level. When people burn the American flag, pick up feces with the pages of the bible or dress up as a quasi-drag Jesus, the common reaction is to kill the messenger but little thought is put into the message itself. To clarify, we like to kill a spider when we see it in our home but when we do that we forget the spider may be there to hunt and kill other “disgusting” insects.

Since I do not know the true intentions of the filmmaker, all I can do is place the video within my own context. Had I known where the video came from and knew a little about the artist, I might have a slightly different interpretation of the “intended” message. But good art does not require context, it only requires a) the art and b) an audience - all other considerations are secondary because once the art has been created by the artist, the artist looses control of the art.

Van Gogh is no longer alive to tell us what he “intended” by painting “Still Life with Absinthe” in 1887 so we can only look at the painting and make our own conclusions. Of course, we do know a little about Van Gogh’s life. We know he liked to drink absinthe and we know he suffered from mental sickness so we might be able to conclude he just wanted to paint one of his favorite subjects and wanted to immortalize his vice. But we can only infer that interpretation from outside facts not included in the painting so all we really have is just a study on a bottle of booze in a cafe. We have to put our own meaning into the painting and anything Van Gogh intended is beside the point. In a way, the art becomes the intellectual property of the audience.

Art also says more about the audience than it does about the artist and our reaction to art is sometimes more interesting than the art itself anyway. Remember when you were in high school and somebody said they thought you liked some girl or boy but you denied it up one side and down the other? You may have been “saying” you didn’t like Suzy or Joe but your overreaction to the question made it quite clear you really did like Suzy or Joe. Art, then, works very much the same way. Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography created controversy because many people did not feel his art was appropriate - either because he was funded by a federal program (National Endowment for the Arts) or because his art “can be viewed as fetishizing black men”. While his photographs are “shocking”, the outcry over them is far more interesting because it speaks about the values of the society upset by them.

So does this mean that everything controversial is art? I believe it does not, but we should always be willing to to give someones self expression at least a moments worth of consideration.

As regular readers know I am slavishly devoted to master animator Hayao Miyazaki and consider his movie My Neighbor Totoro which was released 20 years ago to be one of the greatest films ever made. Now Sayama Forest, also known as Totor Forest, which inspired Miyazaki to create the movie is the focus of an effort to save it from further destruction by developers.

In artistic terms this wood is the equivalent of Monet's gardens at Giverny or Arles for van Gogh and Gaugin.

The Totoro Forest Project is the brainchild of Enrico Casarosa and Dice Tsutsumi and has not surprisingly received the enthusiastic support of Pixar.

I quote from Animation Magazine:

Artists from around the world were asked to come up with artwork inspired by the gentle creature depicted in the landmark movie. Over 200 original pieces from internationally acclaimed artists and animators—William Joyce, Andreas Deja, Timothy Lamb, Ronnie del Carmen, Ralph Eggleston, Pete Docter and Peter de Seve, to name a few—are featured in this one-of-a-kind event which tries to answer the question “What is your Totoro?” The auction will be held at Pixar Animation Studio on September 6th. A companion art book, edited by Karen Paik (The Story of Pixar), will also be available at the event.
At last, I have published a page detailing my adventures and misadventures in Paris. For four days, I was lost in Paris' narrow, twisty streets lined with tall, stone buildings. Yet, I managed to stumble upon the sights I planned to visit and many more. Paris, for me, was about the journey of place and time, which allowed me to dabble in the art, architecture and culture of France.

The full account is here: http://winentrip.wordpress.com/perdu-lost-in-paris/. Or, you can just click on "Perdu (lost) in Paris" under Pages, to the left.

I have posted my pictures in a set entitled, "France," on Flickr. This is the link: www.flickr.com/photos/bspicher.

Talvez a fada estivesse ali, dentro daqueles olhos.

Sat morning.
“So you don’t want to go out tonight?” sister
“No, I don’t want to hang out with kids.” me
“They’re not kids…they’re sea lions.” sister

Saturday.
Stop Varenne for Rodin museum.
See admission charge, then explore the Latin Quarter and Luxembourg garden park.

The huge hands and feet of the first Rodin sculpture group of figures I come to.
They have magnifying glass telescopes set up so you can better see the small detail of one that looks like a doorway, and looking at the title is La Porte de L’Enfer.
I am already excited that I know nothing of Rodin except the name a slight familiarity.
Ariane is beautifully nice, haunting and even confusing at first glance.
Watched a baby in a stroller eyes flickering from one marble statue to the next. The feet of the dark outdoor sculptures so large.
Small girls make French duck noises.
I want to punch a kid who just put his cigarette out at the feet of D’Andres’ draped figure. Give us both an inordinate memory of this sculpture garden.

You get all the angles that books never provide you. I sit on a bench and look at his famous thinker in front of me. Conical evergreens on either side of bench. MCMVI. The “d” in his signature looks especially nice. The muscles of the right leg quickly remind me of H.R. Geiger, the feet are a bulbous knobby, the flap of hair on left side of his head is strange. But the impression is magnificent.
The feeling of it.
Meaning of it?
Meaning of it to me.

Francesca of Paulo and Francesca dans les Nuages is beautiful. The fish woman is erotic.
A photo of Rodin shows a man with a stomach and large hands large beard.
The way La Danaide comes out of the marble.
A great painting by Van Gogh I’ve never seen before Le Pere Tanguy.
He also owned ancient Egyptian and Greek and a couple Japanese sculptures. A Van Gogh wheat painting, a dark Monet water 1886.
Le Sculpteur et sa Muse – look up. It is edifying.
I love L’Homme et sa Pensee and if you look close at the right angle you can see the slight part of her parts underneath. The man is bearded the woman’s face young.
My imagination is running wild in this place of smooth lines, in these recreations waiting for life to breath into them. Breath that runs from my eyes to the mass of gray yogurt holding who I am. Breath that works, even if nobody is brave enough to acknowledge it.

Upon seeing second photo his hands are not so large.
An Edward Munch of the thinker.
The poetic pinch of the breast in Fugit Amor, thumb on the underside.
A very cool portrait of him by Sinet.
Le Sommeil beautiful.
He had a Rembrandt copy of the woman washing feet.
A blonde girl of maybe seven with pigtails stares at Le Baiser for a couple minutes, transfixed, and I wonder what she’s thinking.
The girl in the sculpture has her hand in light relief, curling just under her back ear.
The man kissing eternal idol – L’Eternelle Idole. I want you like this.
We can embrace and feel it while held in the Main de Dieu.

The young girl with roses in hat’s little buck and parted teeth.
The odd way they look in profile.

As I sit at the gates of hell your perfume eludes me. The kiss of soft curve memory tries wooden planks out into my middle back. A rosary of misery calling to be prayed over. Will the subtle felt of your skin ever be teased by my lips?
Sew pattern of reluctance into consuming victory of spirit.
The maddening crunch of loose
gravel half embedded in clayed mud.
The whisper.
The laugh throaty in moment feeling like the whine of an old automatic camera rewinding.
Turn soft light pink folds turquoise in sunrise - remove the make-up of previous personality persona to dance move walk fully in what is inside. Birdsong twitter running of green pattern,
spider web of pantyhose a pinstripe citrus line from toes to thigh
to breast nipple
collar bone
neck
lip nose
right eye forehead.
A yawn and grin afterwards. A letting in.
A shadow rolled in dirt maple covered hard to part.
The two escaping from marble.
Standing at the gates of hell others get their picture taken – sitting at/before the gates of hell I think of the curve of your stomach and long to wrap my thus around you.

In the café in Rodin’s garden I drink a Cotes de Provence Rose 3E90. With so much walking this trip and sun and fresh air I just cannot escape from rose during the day. This one is very good. I am very much contemplating taking my little bottle away from the café and sitting down somewhere else…I decide not to. I want to explore where he made the works – it feels inside here somewhere. Is it where the museum now is? In the back building…or did it stretch the property underground. Surely there are kilns down there. I have the strong desire to read his biography. The marble figures are the best I have ever seen.
You will hardly ever smile at a stranger in this country – is it you or them?
I am very conscious of playing with my beard or resting the end of my pen on chin in this place - considering the sculpture yards away is what it is. I am smiling inside the whole time, some moments of unrecognized breathless awe.
Moments of wonder. Moments of lust. Moments of ache.

“A man bummed a cigarette from me, he had a beard and a strange haircut – the back half was long unruly and tangled, the whole left side shaved clean. He was wearing a black hoodie and a slate scarve. One of those prints I’ve been seeing everywhere. His jeans were tattered at the bottom. He was wearing gray and turquoise Pumas with hints of yellow. His hands were tattooed. He said thank you in shaky English.” The man who thought this is wearing a green shirt.
Then I left the museum.
Then I thought of writing more prose at the museum.
Then I sat still at the museum.
I sat and re-read some things. The second time I look at the Thinker dark gray clouds brood behind him.
I do not go to the Camille Claudel exhibit.
I don’t go because I am almost too full.

A more apt name for the memorable 2006 documentary clumsily titled "Kurt Cobain, About a Son" would have been "In the head of Kurt Cobain." This brilliant documentary is narrated by Cobain himself, taken from over 25 hours of journalist MIchael Azerrad's audiotaped interviews.

Fourteen years after his demise, enough time has elapsed to safely say he was the most gifted rock star of his (and my) generation. Like Vincent Van Gogh, Cobain drew upon a wide range of emotions including joy, melancholia and anger as a source of inspiration and insight. And like Van Gogh, I hope Cobain will be remembered much more for his art expressed with intense feeling rather than his suicide.

If the alien pods in the 1956 cult classic horror film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, are a metaphor for conformity to society, then the non-conformist Cobain stood out as the iconic holdout against them. I wish more of us were as bold.

Cobain's short life should remind us conscious living is not just about peace and love. It's also about being disgusted with corruption, exploitation, and conformity to the point of eradication of individuality.

"The duty of youth is to challenge corruption."-- Kurt Cobain

Primeiro as (possíveis) conclusões.
