• Make sure that there is a UBL_USERS group on the UBL server machine. Also, add the users from the domain into this group using "manage" on the UBL server machine
• Make sure that there is a UBL_USERS group on the domain controller. The group must have "security group" set to "global" instead of "domain local". Also, on the domain controller, add the relevant users to the UBL_USERS group (if not already there).
• On the UBL server machine, bring up control panel -> administrative tools -> local security policy. Add the domain UBL_USERS group to "Allow log on locally" or "Log on locally" (whichever text the machine uses)
• Reboot the local UBL server machine (must reboot the machine after making security changes)

Normas de publicación reciente como la Ley de Contratos del Sector Público o la Ley de Medidas de Impulso de la Sociedad de la Información han puesto de manifiesto el interés de las instituciones en el desarrollo de la factura electrónica, que ha llegado al punto de establecer su obligatoriedad a partir del año 2008 para las empresas que no pueden presentar cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias abreviada. Sin embargo este impulso se viene produciendo de forma intensa desde la publicación de la Directiva 2001/115, y su temprana trasposición a finales 2002 en una norma española que quedó finalmente subsumida en el RD 1496/2003, el Reglamento de Facturación.

En un contexto en el que la norma legal es flexible, el problema surge de la necesidad de hacer interoperables los sistemas y equipos de quienes emiten factura y quienes la reciben. Desde el punto de vista legal, el requisito de que la factura electrónica sea un documento con firma también electrónica puede cubrirse con un simple fichero PDF firmado electrónicamente con el aspecto de la factura en papel. Pero, cuando lo reciba, el receptor acabará tecleando los datos de la factura en el programa de gestión de facturas recibidas y en el de contabilidad, y no se habrán logrado los ahorros previstos. En cambio, si el mensaje se codifica en XML, el computador del receptor puede procesar de forma automática muchos pasos relacionados con la gestión de las facturas.

Varias iniciativas internacionales trabajan para unificar formatos: en Naciones Unidas, el Grupo de Trabajo Cross Industry Invoice, y en el Comité Europeo de Normalización, los grupos eInvoice Focus Group y Business Interoperability Interfaces on public procurement in Europe .

Un elemento común a estas iniciativas es el uso de un conjunto de especificaciones denominado “Core Components” de UN/CEFACT, cuya implementación más relevante se da en el formato Invoice de la especificación UBL, que en la versión 2.0 está siendo impulsado por la organización de estandarización OASIS. La futura v.3.0 será posiblemente el texto que recogerá los requisitos de todas las iniciativas, bajo la bandera de UN/CEFACT.

En España, la especificación facturae, codificada en XML y evolucionada desde un formato diseñado por la banca, se oficializó en la Orden PRE 2971/2007 recibiendo el apoyo de la Agencia Tributaria y del Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio para su uso en la facturación destinada a las Administraciones Públicas, lo que lleva a prever un amplio uso. Mientras avanza su adopción, el estándar español evolucionará hasta convertirse en una personalización del UBL, de forma semejante al ilustre precedente del NES (Northern European Subset) que al incorporar a España e Italia redefine la denominación para ser NES: Neutral European Specification.

La firma electrónica es otro ámbito en el que hay que intentar la compatibilidad. Como cada entidad firmante puede elegir cualquier PSC (Prestador de Servicios de Certificación) para sus certificados, la entidad que acepta facturas se enfrenta a la complejidad de validar certificados de los que tiene poca información. Una solución que facilitará la aceptación de facturas es que éstas llegaran firmadas con la modalidad ES-X-L prevista en la norma TS 101 903, incluyendo un sello de tiempo y la información de validez del certificado expedido por su emisor: lo que se denomina “firma completa”, y significa que la firma y el certificado están validados en origen.

Así, el receptor se ve exonerado de las obligaciones que impone aceptar firmas electrónicas y la posibilidad de que se utilicen certificados electrónicos expedidos por cualquier PSC europeo no supondrá un problema en países diferentes al del expedidor.

Aunque parece complicado, las pymes realizarán sus facturas electrónicas con plataformas como “Faccil” (accesible en http://www.faccil.com y que gestiona facturas en formato facturae 3.1 y firmas electrónicas ES-X-L) o las que desarrollan las entidades financieras, así que no tendrán que preocuparse de estos detalles, que serán resueltos por su proveedor tecnológico.

Sin embargo, los propios desarrolladores de software de facturación y de planificación de recursos empresariales (en inglés ERP, enterprise resource planning) deben actualizarse y prestar atención a los estándares para evitar la actual situación en la que han desarrollado soluciones propietarias de algo que venden como “factura electrónica” que frecuentemente incumple la normativa aplicable, y que no considera las necesidades de interoperabilidad de sus clientes.

Con la idea de servir de modelo a los desarrolladores de soluciones y de solución de bajo coste a las PYMES, autónomos y profesionales, existe una versión gratuita de un programa de facturación electrónica básico que puede descargarse del portal facturae (http://www.facturae.es) gestionado de forma conjunta por la Agencia Tributaria y por el Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio. Este programa genera facturas compatibles con la versión 3.1 del formato facturae y genera firmas EPES (firmas básicas basadas en políticas de control de la vigencia de los certificados). Junto con el programa es necesario utilizar un certificado electrónico de prestadores de certificación como Camerfirma, Firmaprofesional o Ancert.

La factura electrónica tiene múltiples ventajas: mejor aprovechamiento de la habilidad de los empleados, reducción de controversias, mejoras en la resolución de incidencias, reducción de plazos de cobro, mejoras en la negociación de los plazos de pago, posibilidad de acudir de forma ágil a servicios financieros como el confirming y el factoring, mejora de la relación comercial y de la imagen de la empresa. Sin olvidar el cumplimiento de obligaciones, puesto que la facturación electrónica es obligatoria por exigencia de la Ley 30/2007 de Contratos del Sector Público en determinados supuestos.

En efecto, por la disposición final novena de la citada ley, desde el 1 de agosto de 2008, la presentación de facturas electrónicas es obligatoria en la contratación con el sector público estatal para las sociedades que no puedan presentar cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias abreviada y desde el 1 de octubre de 2009 el uso de la factura electrónica será obligatorio en todos los contratos del sector público estatal; no obstante, en los contratos menores, la utilización de la factura electrónica será obligatoria cuando así se establezca expresamente en estas Órdenes de extensión.

Recordemos que pueden formular cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias abreviada las sociedades que durante dos ejercicios consecutivos reúnan, a la fecha de cierre de cada uno de ellos, al menos dos de las circunstancias siguientes:

• Que el total de las partidas de activo no supere los once millones cuatrocientos mil euros.
• Que el importe neto de su cifra anual de negocios no supere los veintidós millones ochocientos mil euros.
• Que el número medio de trabajadores empleados durante el ejercicio no sea superior a doscientos cincuenta.

Y que las sociedades perderán la facultad de formular cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias abreviada si dejan de reunir, durante dos ejercicios consecutivos, dos de las circunstancias a que se refiere el párrafo anterior.

En definitiva, aunque sigue siendo potestad de la empresa receptora de facturas la decisión de aceptar facturas electrónicas, cuando el destinatario de la factura sea una administración pública, habrá que enviarlas electrónicamente en un plazo u otro según la dimensión de la empresa y el tipo de administración pública, pero siempre en plazos que concluyen el 1 de enero de 2010 (en esta ocasión por aplicación de la Ley 11/2007 de Acceso Electrónico de los Ciudadanos a los Servicios Públicos).

Sorprende que con estos plazos, y con las indudables ventajas de su adopción, el nivel de uso de la factura electrónica sea tan reducido, tanto en el ámbito privado como en el público.

En todo caso, además de un reto, es una oportunidad para los desarrolladores que podrán diferenciar sus productos si los dotan de los adecuados interfaces de conversión de formatos y de creación y verificación de firmas electrónicas.

Tras desplegar la primera solución infomática adaptada a la versión 3.1 del formato facturae que incluye una firma XAdES X-L (según se especifica en la norma TS 101 903), y que puede verse en la Plataforma Faccil, los módulos de factura electrónica de Albalia Interactiva empiezan a utilizarse en implementaciones de SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle (JD Edwards y Peoplesoft) e incluso Open Bravo.

Además, la solución tiene en cuenta la evolución prevista de la norma PRE/2971/2007 hacia UBL.

El entorno Faccil se está utilizando como implementación de referencia para comprobar la interoperabilidad con otras soluciones.

La apertura institucional corrió por cuenta de Martín Pérez, Presidente de Asimelec.

A continuación intervino Julián Inza, Presidente del Congreso y de Albalia Interactiva, quien nos introdujo sobre los distintos aspectos que se iban a tratar en el Congreso, haciendo un recorrido por la normativa actual reguladora del régimen de Facturación Telemática.

D. Juan José Segura, responsable de Factura Electrónica del Departamento de Informática Tributaria de la AEAT, nos recordó los principales aspectos a tener en cuenta a la hora de utilizar las facturas. También hizo un avance acerca de la obligatoriedad de presentación de los libros de IVA que, de forma obligatoria, tendrán que presentar algunas sociedades el próximo ejercicio 2009, indicando que dicha presentación no coincidirá con la presentación de la autoliquidación del IVA, sino que tendrá lugar unos días después. Asimismo informó que la nueva declaración informativa correspondiente a estos libros incluirá algunos datos que en la actualidad no contienen, pero que sí figuran en la declaración 347 (Declaración de Operaciones con Terceros), declaración que no tendrán que presentar aquellas sociedades que queden afectas a dicha obligatoriedad.
También mencionó algunos cambios normativos que se avecinan, como:

• La bonificación del 100% de la cuota del Impuesto de Patrimonio, es decir, no se suprime el Impuesto ni la obligación de su presentación, aunque el resultado de la cuota líquida será siempre cero.
• En las importaciones, el ejercicio del derecho a la deducción del IVA tendrá lugar con la admisión del DUA de importación, y no con motivo del pago de la hoja liquidatoria, como hasta ahora.
• La posibilidad que van a tener “todas” las empresas (grandes, medianas y pequeñas) de acogerse a un nuevo “Régimen Especial de devolución de IVA mensual”.

El siguiente ponente fue Mtr. Claude Lotrian, Director para España, Francia y Portugal de TecCom GMBH, de las soluciones de intercambio de facturas con diferentes países.

Tras el Coffee Break, intervino Mtr. Bruno Koch, responsable de Factura Electrónica de Billentis, quien nos habló, (en inglés, aunque la presentación se encontraba en castellano), que trató el tema de la facturación electrónica en Europa y su evolución hacia los mercados dinámicos.

D. Joao Manuel Rodrigues Frade, Advisor PricerwaterhouseCoopers y Miembro Permanente del Observatorio de la Comisión Europea nos introdujo en la plataforma de facturación que va a adoptar la Comisión Europea, haciendo hincapié en que no es necesario utilizar la firma electrónica en el régimen de facturación para darle validez jurídica a este instrumento. Curiosa apreciación, cuando en España precisamente, y en otros Estados miembros, hemos apostado por la utilización de esta fundamental herramienta.

A continuación tuvo lugar una mesa redonda sobre las distintas actividades en materia de normalización de la factura electrónica en CEN, que fue moderada por Dª. Mª Jesus García-Martín, de la Subdirección General de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones del Mª de Industria, Turismo y Comercio, en las que intervinieron como ponentes D. Eloy Ruiz, Jefe de Área del Departamento de Informática Tributaria de la AEAT, y D. Oriol Bausá, Director General de Invinet Sistemas.

Uno de los temas que merece especial mención y por lo tanto conviene recordar, es el de la apertura del formato facturae, que permite definir extensiones que pueden incorporar los distintos sectores económicos. A tal fin, se están manteniendo contactos con distintos sectores que requieren determinada información en sus facturas (empresas de turismo y agencias de viajes, construcción, eléctricas y sanidad), con el fin de que sean tenidos en cuenta en las próximas versiones del formato facturae.

Con motivo de una consulta planteada por uno de los asistentes, Juan José Segura adelantó también que a corto plazo (uno o dos años), está previsto también la regulación del e-pedido y el e-albarán.

Cerca del final de la mañana intervino D. Carlos Maza, Subdirector General de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones del Mº de Industria, Turismo y Comercio, que habló del portal Facturae (www.facturae.es) y de otras iniciativas que está llevando a cabo el Ministerio. Lástima que no hubiera turno de preguntas para este ponente, ya que, en mi caso, pensaba proponerle que incluyeran alguna partida con cargo al Plan Avanza con el fin de que en las Comisarías del Policía, entreguen a los ciudadanos junto con el nuevo DNI electrónico, un lector para que puedan utilizar el certificado digital que lleva incorporado.

La última de las ponencias corrió a cargo de D. José Luis Encinar Velayos, responsable del Programa de Impulso a la Factura Electrónica del sector AA.PP. de Telefónica España, que nos mostró las características de la plataforma de facturación B2B Conecta que ofrece Telefónica a todos los usuarios, que permite trabajar con los certificados digitales de la FNMT-RCM y más recientemente, también con los de CATcer.

Tras la comida D. Juan Holgado, asesor estratégico de Fundetec que habló de las claves a tener en cuenta para la utilización de plataformas de facturación y nos adelantó la próxima aparición de un visor de facturas en formato facturae a través de Open Office. También apostó por el formato XBRL para desarrolladores de software que promueve Fundetec como estándar para la presentación de las cuentas anuales en los Registros Mercantiles y con la banca a la hora de presentar balances para la solicitud de créditos y préstamos.

Caixa Galicia estuvo también representada por D. Manuel López Martínez, responsable del Area de Servicios de Empresa y Dª. Ana Belén Vázquez García, Directora de Proyecto y responsable del Área de Servicios de Empresa, quienes hablaron de la plataforma de facturación que ofrecen a clientes y no clientes, como sistema on line de tesorería y gestión integral de cobros y pagos. Esta entidad ha sido realmente valiente al implementar una solución de facturación electrónica para interoperar, incluso, con no clientes en el extranjero, lo que les obliga a trabajar con multi-divisas, multi-lenguajes, multi-formatos, etc.

También habló de plataformas de facturación D. Alfonso Sánchez, Director comercial de Eurobits Technologies, como centro de intercambio de facturas digitales, que trabaja con subfacturación (facturación por terceros) y que también custodia las facturas.

A continuación intervino D. Rubén Cortés, Jefe de Proyectos del Consorci Administració Oberta de Catalunya (AOC), que también ha optado por el formato facturae en su plataforma.

D. David Sánchez Blázquez, responsable del Proyecto de Factura Electrónica. Desarrollo Corporativo de Red.es habló del impulso que están ejerciendo para la implantación de la Facturación Electrónica en el ámbito de las Administraciones Locales, que muestran en la actualidad importantes diferencias en cuanto a la utilización de las TIC en sus respectivos ámbitos.

La última ponencia corrió a cargo de Dª. Lucía Cobos Quinta, Secretaria de Estado de Telecomunicaciones y para la Sociedad de la Información del Mª de Industria, Turismo y Comercio que, con su brevedad, consiguió recuperar el pequeño desfase horario que llevábamos, y que hizo especial hincapié en el número de ayudas concedidas al amparo del Plan Avanza, recordando que aún sigue abierta la convocatoria de ayudas 3/2007 y que éstas se van a prorrogar hasta 2012 (inicialmente estaba previsto que finalizaran las ayudas en 2010).

Julián Inza, de nuevo, hizo un recopilatorio de las conclusiones del Congreso (que seguramente ampliará en su blog), que clausuró D. José Pérez, Director General de Asimelec, que agradeció la participación de los ponentes y de los innumerables asistentes y nos emplazó para el próximo IV Congreso de Factura Electrónica que tendrá lugar el próximo año.

Esto es muy oportuno en un contexto de "compliance" que en España implica el uso de firmas electrónicas, en particular las del DNI electrónico, y en el que las evidencias electrónicas generadas en la gestión documental electrónica sustituirán paulatinamente a las procedentes de la gestión documental en papel.

En este contexto, nos hemos fijado en un producto de IBM especialmente diseñado para ello, que gestiona de forma nativa los documentos electrónicos basados en XML y que se presenta en tres versiones:

• WebSphere DataPower XML Accelerator XA35
• WebSphere DataPower XML Security Gateway XS40
• WebSphere DataPower Integration Appliance XI50

Estamos colaborando con IBM para definir el uso de estos equipos en grandes proyectos de factura electrónica y firma electrónica, junto con otros interesantes productos sobre los que me extenderé en otro momento.

En general, son productos destinados a desplegar  una arquitectura SOA, con valor probatorio, con medidas de seguridad XML y con integración sobre sistemas que manejan múltiples formatos que finalmente confluyen en uno o más flujos SOAP / XML.

Nuevo software y servicios SOA

IBM ha integrado totalmente las tecnologías de DataPower (dispositivos SOA) y FileNet (software de gestión de contenidos y de gestión de procesos de negocio o BPM) en su oferta de soluciones SOA. Las nuevas herramientas anunciadas son las siguientes:

• Nuevos productos para gestión de procesos de negocio (BPM).Soluciones como Expanded Business Activity Monitoring incluyen plantillas específicas para cada sector económico con metodologías clave y cuadros de mandos configurables que permiten supervisar las actividades del negocio y ajustarlas, según sea necesario. Además, ya están disponibles nuevos cuadros de mandos de BPM para hacer seguimiento y monitorizar los roles de las personas asociadas a una determinada actividad.
• IBM WebSphere Registry and Repository (WSRR), un software que ayuda a los clientes a gestionar servicios web y procesos de negocio compartidos. Entre las nuevas funcionalidades de WSRR se encuentra la integración con el software Tivoli Composite Application Manager (ITCAM).
• WebSphere DataPower Xi50 Integration Appliance. Solución compatible con DB2 versión 9 que se integra con IBM WebSphere Services Registry and Repository (WSRR) para ofrecer funcionalidades que mejoren la interoperabilidad y conectividad de los servicios.
• Integración de WebSphere con FileNet P8 Business Process Manager.

Fragen über Fragen und die Zeit wird immer knapper. Am liebsten würde ich die kommenden Tage überspringen und direkt in den Sommerurlaub starten aber da muss ich jetzt durch. Am Mittwoch werde ich erst einmal ohne groß nachzudenken in den Tag starten, vielleicht wird es ja auch gar nicht so schlimm werden.

Komisch diese Situation ähnelt beinahe der Angst zum Zahnarzt gehen zu müssen, die meisten Menschen sollen vor weißen Kitteln ja panische Angst haben. Man weiß einfach nicht was auf einen zukommt aber das es schmerzhaft, in diesem Fall stressig, wird das sitzt direkt in den Köpfen.

Ich Informiere euch sollte ich den kommenden Mittwoch überstehen...Drückt mir die Daumen!

Tratándose de facturas electrónicas, los formatos más empleados son los que tienen que ver con el EDI (Electronic Data Interchange, Intercambio Electrónico de Datos) y el lenguaje XML (Extensible Markup Language, Lenguaje de Etiquetado Extensible), de modo que las extensiones .edi y .xml ya suponen una primera aproximación a la resolución del problema.

En general estas extensiones ya son de por sí suficientes cuando los ficheros llegan a aplicaciones especializadas que pueden determinar el tipo de mensaje concreto (factura, pedido, albarán,...) y su formato (facturae, UBL, EDIFACT, ...) sin más que leer las cabeceras, los primeros caracteres,  del fichero.

Sin embargo, en muchas ocasiones, de lo que se trata es de que el sistema operativo sea capaz de abrir el programa adecuado cuando hacemos "doble click" sobre un fichero con una determinada extensión.

Por ese motivo me he permitido recomendar las siguientes extensiones:

• .fir Fichero PKCS#7 que contiene una firma electrónica y del que se puede extraer el fichero firmado. Esta extensión se utiliza ya por Albalia, Camerfirma y CatCert.
• .xes Fichero XML que incluye una firma XAdES.
• .fre Fichero que contiene una factura electrónica en formato facturae con una firma XAdES ES-X-L
• .ubl Fichero que contiene un mensaje UBL (pedido, albarán, factura,..)

Como recordareis, el III Congreso de Facturación Electrónica y Digitalización Certificada, se encuadra dentro de las actividades promovidas por el Grupo de Trabajo de Factura Electrónica y la Comisión de Seguridad en las Tecnologías de la Información y Confianza en la Red de Asimelec. Su celebración se ha aplazado hasta el próximo día 18 de junio y tendrá lugar en la Escuela de Ingenieros Industriales, Calle José Gutiérrez Abascal 2, 28006 MADRID.

La jornada se desarrollará con diversas ponencias, mesas redondas, y debates en torno a la factura electrónica y a la digitalización certificada, materias sobre las que el pasado año ha habido una importante publicación de normas que afectan a aspectos como la obligatoriedad de su implantación en determinados supuestos y la de los formatos electrónicos a utilizar.

También se analizará el futuro de la adopción de la factura electrónica en España y en los países de su entorno, con la vista puesta en resolver uno de los principales retos pendientes a corto/medio plazo: la compatibilidad entre las diferentes soluciones.

Este evento va dirigido principalmente a:

• Responsables de empresas proveedoras de organismos de la AGE que no puedan presentar balance y cuenta de resultados abreviada.
• Responsables de organismos públicos de contratación.
• Empresas tecnológicas que desarrollan productos de Gestión, como ERP, BPM, o programas de facturación y contabilidad.
• Empresas relacionadas con la firma digital, y que deseen profundizar en el empleo de la firma en relación con la factura electrónica
• Empresas digitalizadoras de documentos que deseen ofrecer servicios en los que los documentos digitalizados tengan valor probatorio y permitan destruir los documentos originales en papel.
• Empresas desarrolladoras de productos de “digitalización certificada” que deseen conocer el procedimiento de homologación de este tipo de software.

Over his 20-year career, Kelly Pettit went from recording his first song at age 17 in a studio, to recording his fourth and latest CD, Fuel, “all over the place.”

Drums and bass were recorded in a Vancouver studio, vocals were recorded in his apartment in Japan, and a friend recorded fiddle in his hotel room while on tour with Kelly Clarkson. Pettit even mixed his songs over the Internet (he was in Japan; his editor, in Vancouver) and used his computer to design the CD jacket.

“People can create amazing music from their home studios,” says Pettit. “A lot of gear that used to be in the studios is now a software plug-in that only takes up space on your hard drive.”

Live the dream

Technology has made recording music at home cheap and easy. Every day, Jason Johnston, owner of Revolution Audio in Mississauga, Ontario, meets hobbyists and wannabe professionals who want to set up home studios and live out their music dreams. “It really is a revolution right now because people can finish up with a professional product that could easily run neck and neck with anything produced in a larger studio,” Johnston says.

Larger studios can be intimidating to people who just want to record a song or two but have never performed outside the shower. Other people are turned off by the cost of studio time. When you’re paying between $60 and $100 an hour, you focus more on watching the clock than on creating the sounds. Home studios give you the best of both worlds—the artistic freedom of working at your own pace and a professional sound.

Hardware and software

There are a lot of hardware and software options for recording at home, but your choices depend on your music and budget.

Whether your budget is $400 or $10,000, you need the following basics for your personal studio:

• software to record on (for example, Cubase and Sonar for mixing synthesized music, and ProTools for live-off-the-floor recording and collaborating with larger studios)
• an audio interface (such as a stand-alone USB box or a PCI card that goes inside your desktop) to connect your guitar, speakers and microphone to your computer
• a PC with the recommended system requirements (that is, at least one GB of RAM, a P4 or AMD 2-GHz processor, and a second hard drive with at least 7200 RPM)
• a good microphone, quality monitors and the right cables (that is, a USB or FireWire connection)

Getting started

Before you record your first track, you might want to brush up on your technique or even learn new skills. Berklee Music offers online courses in subjects such as music production, song writing, arranging and music theory. Trufire.com offers online guitar instruction through downloads, streaming videos and CDs. Songwriting software MasterWriter features various dictionaries to help you capture the perfect rhyme, phrase or idea.

If you want help putting it all together, Emusician.com offers home studio musicians information on music production technology and techniques. The Studio at Home forum has product reviews, helpful tips and tricks, and tons of postings on everything from recording voices to mixing sound on your computer.

It’s important to have enough hard- drive space. If you plan on capturing and archiving everything you record, you’re going to need lots of internal or external storage space.

Most computers bought within the last year come with a CD and/or a DVD burner. While a single standard CD can hold up to 700 MB of data, a standard DVD can hold up to 4.7 GB which is important when you’re backing up data. DVDs are pricier than CDs but hold much more information.

Sharing your music

Once you’ve played with your sound, recorded some music and burned your first CD, the Internet gives musicians direct access to their fans and distribution networks, cutting out middlemen.

If hosting your own Web site seems too daunting, launch your online presence with Windows Live™ Spaces. By adding the Microsoft Windows Media Player module to your space, you can play a clip of your music for visitors. If they like it, they can contact you for more information about your tunes.

A site like InDiscover also helps musicians get noticed. It uses “collaborative filtering” to recommend independent artists and their music to new listeners based on how listeners previously rated other songs. The more often your music is rated, the more likely it will be recommended to other visitors.

You can promote your music online and sell songs as digital downloads on popular indie sites such as Broadjam and Soundclick. Then, when you’re ready to hit the road, you can use an Electronic Press Kit (EPK) at sonicbids to connect you with promoters and help you land gigs.

“I don’t think anyone can survive by solely relying on the Internet. Performing live and getting good reviews in newspapers, TV and radio offer very strong exposure,” says Pettit. “But the combination of everything is pretty powerful.”

The trip back to the west coast (home).

Well, after flying back to Canada for 4 weeks to tour the west coast and visit family, I found that trying to kill two birds with one stone isn’t as easy as it seems. Thanks to UBL and all my fans to help me win the Ultimate Band contest some 7 months ago, things have been moving slowly but steadily towards a brighter future. It’s a constant battle like Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to find harmony in being a musician and a business man for the music. I have found a love for both but 24 hours in a day just doesn’t seem like enough to make them both harmonize.

Stepping off the airplane in Vancouver, Canada led me jet lagged yet racing down to Seattle in a car with my father to pick up some music gear I purchased with one of the UBL prizes I redeemed so gratefully. The next day I was rehearsing with some great musicians for the up-coming shows in and around Vancouver looking like I had been on the whisky bottle for a week thanks to time zones and lack of sleep. Mark Geraghty and Kate Polsky added volume and depth to my music as well as a belly full of laughs and rekindled memories. It wasn’t easy trying to make time for practice and everything else on my plate. I keep a truck in Nanaimo that hardly gets used but when I dust it off, and remind myself to drive on the right side of the road, it’s a real life savor. I use it to zip between a divorced mother and father, a frail grandfather, friends with beer in their fridge, and all the things required to make a concert happen.

Fortunately for me, my father took over a lot of the duties and really stepped up to make the 7 shows possible. In fact, I think he missed his calling. He organized press coverage and cool venues and by the time he was finished there wasn’t a soul left in Nanaimo who didn’t know what I was up too. In some cases it felt like a high school reunion where old friends came out of hibernation to say hi and catch my shows. I literally hadn’t seem some friends in like 18 years! My mother and her hubby Fred came up from Victoria to two of my shows and I took a photo of my mom and dad together again. That’s as rare as sushi. Even Vancouver Islands, CHECK 6 news came to one of the shows to cover my story but none of us really knew how they were informed? You can watch it here. Some of the Vancouver shows were cool too. Jerry Wong and Scott Jackson were present. The incredibly talented Jerry jammed a tune with me while Scott did an evening gig with me.

Call it a wonderful disaster if you will but I had the good fortune of meeting a myspace fan/friend/music reviewer Shannon Ambrose. She flew in from Calgary just to watch a few shows. The highlights include going out for brunch and having a quite time with her and other friends in a bar after one of the gigs. We shared some stories of familiar acquaintances and got to meet in person rather than on MSN. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her for making such a huge effort and then I had to cancel one of the gigs because I was sick. She came all that way to only catch one show (which turned out to be the big dud of the lot as well). Sorry Shannon!

All in all, the Canadian/USA trip was incredible. The support and coverage I received was impressive and touching. People really went out of their way to make things happen and I’m still moved by it. I sold lots of CD’s, had a fan make Kelly Pettit t-shirts, got newspaper, radio and TV coverage, all while standing next to my friends and family. A real highlight I won’t forget anytime soon.

It’s been years since I started this journey of life as a musician (Over 20 to be honest).

Most musicians will agree that it’s not an easy road taken and if I had done this for the money then I’d have been a fool a thousand times over. However, I don’t think I have worked harder on any one thing in my life as I do with music.

And now that the computer and the internet have made it possible to pursue the business side of music with equal force, the work load has doubled.

What has been really rewarding to me is that I’ve discovered something inside myself I never knew existed. I have actually started my own business and I like it! Selling my product and building a clientèle one brick at a time has been a lot of fun despite the fact it still remains a second job.

Performing live is definitely the best way to connect with new fans; however, it’s very hard to reach a large mass that way.

And while music is subjective, I am thrilled at the amount of fans that have gotten behind me and believe in my songs as much as I do. They’re the reason I am able to keep moving forward one step at a time.

From a business perspective, the hardest part is letting the world know that you’ve got a great product. Imagine if you could connect with even just 1/1000^th of the 6.60 billion people on this planet!

Fortunately, those that have come on board have given me ample amount of strength to believe in myself enough to know someday ~ I just might be able to do it!

Holding duel citizenship in Canada and Australia, currently residing in Japan, and having spent significant amounts of time in several other countries around the world, pop / singer songwriter Kelly Pettit surely has a lot to write about. His song catalog most likely illustrates the richness of the cultural experiences he has been exposed to over the years. However, my favorite Pettit song is simply a story about a father and son. It’s called, “Stone After Stone,” off of his CD, FUEL, and it’s a great tune.

“Stone After Stone,” is a well-produced and recorded song with a great storyline. The lyrics describe how a young child, who spends time with his father, will someday grow up to be a father himself and possibly be able to return some of the wisdom the elder gave him. In one of my favorite verses, Pettit sings,

“I’ve wandered the world for some time now. Rumbled, tumbled and tossed. Looking to share what my life had to bare. Many times lonely and lost. But old man like you I’m complete now. Got a life with a wife and a home. So the river can bend or go straight to its end. For I’ve got me a son of my own.”

The “river” is what Pettit is comparing life to, and he references it throughout the song. Pettit handles this comparison creatively, and quite impressively. The chorus goes,

“If everyone’s lives like a river, a river we each call our own. A past left behind, a future to find, rolling on stone after stone.”

I think comparing the river to a “past left behind” and a “future to find” is quite an illustrative and innovative way of looking at things. That’s what hooked me in.

Pettit is a multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, guitar, and harmonica) with strong, smooth vocals. He’s recruited a very professional team of recording engineers and musicians to assist him with this recording, and their efforts are paying off. Pettit's CD, FUEL, won him top honors in the Ultimate Band Contest at UBL.com out of a field of 2,000 other bands from around the world. He’s also had some of his music on TV and radio.

You should check out Kelly Pettit’s music for yourself, especially my favorite of his tunes, “Stone After Stone,” off of his FUEL CD. The music is great, the storytelling is moving, and the chorus is fantastic.

The winner of UBL’s Ultimate Band Contest walks us through his musical journey

Canadian native Kelly Pettit knew from a young age that music was his passion. After playing in numerous bands and releasing CDs independently, his journey in pursuit of his dream eventually took him clear across the globe to Japan where his star continued to rise. As a member of the UBL.com musical community he entered the site’s Ultimate Band Contest in 2007 competing with over 2000 other artists for the chance to be chosen as the #1 artist on the network. After thousands of votes were cast, Kelly emerged as the victor, giving him exposure to many more potential fans through a promotional partnership with ARTISTdirect. We tracked the singer down in Japan to discuss his musical career to date, his work with UBL and his plans for the future.

Tell me a little bit about growing up. When did you know that music was your passion?

Music was always around the house—my dad played guitar. There was always music around. I had a lot of friends that were musicians at the time. At, probably, 13 or 14-years-old I started rocking out the guitar. I started writing songs and they were really bad at the time. We formed a lot of really bad garage bands. It’s a typical story, like most musicians at the time. When I was 16-years-old, my friend got a hold of a 4-track. I don’t think anyone knows what that is anymore. It was from 1984-1985. We were like 15 and 16, just writing a bunch of songs. I started recording in a bigger studio, when I was 18 or 19-years-old, and recorded a couple of songs. I moved to Australia, my father’s an Australian, and I moved around a bunch of studios over there. I was recording, and singing backup, for a bunch of studios as well.

And as all musicians know, it’s never overnight.

Yeah, it’s never overnight. You do it because you love it, that’s the bottom line. It’s been 21 years of experience. I wish I could pack it into a couple of years—the knowledge has taken a long time to accumulate. It’s a long process, and hard work at the same time, but it’s been fun.

So what bands were you listening to when you first picked up that guitar?

There are so many. I’m from Vancouver, Canada, so Bryan Adams was big back at the time. I was a big Beatles fan, because of my father; and early Rod Stewart. The weird thing, for me, is that I always had a taste that went all over the place. The Cure, Billy Joel, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album—all that stuff really got under my skin.

All great bands. Did you find when you moved to Australia that making music was different there? How was the transition?

Well, for me, I don’t know if there was a transition, being so young. It was just sort of one big event. I was just learning all the time. The music was big—bands like INXS. In Australia there were bands like Cold Chisel—all these bands I’d never heard of. I was introduced to a whole bunch of Australian music like Split Ends and Crowded House. In particular Crowded house and Neil Finn’s songwriting styles were something I fell in love with.

You obviously play guitar. I read you also play bass and fiddle as well.

Guitar is my first instrument. The others, I’ve learned not that very well, to be honest, except the mandolin. I was in a really cool band when I was in Canada going to University. We had an upright bass player, another guitar player, and fiddle player and we traded back and forth. He actually plays in Kelly Clarkson’s band now, and was in Shania Twain’s band for a while. He’s an extremely talented musician. So we were always trading different instruments. I would get lessons from him all the time, the poor guy. He taught me the cool tricks. I never considered myself a fantastic guitarist or instrumentalist. I always thought my strength was in my songwriting. That’s always been where my heart has been.

I saw you made your first album back in ‘97. What was that experience like when you first got into the studio to record a proper album?

I was really lucky, as I mentioned earlier. I was in a three-piece band. We used to be street performers. Long story short, you had to audition for a city to get a permit to play there. We used to go down there on the weekends and play this really cool spot. People from all walks of life would pass by and take this bus from one part of Vancouver to another. Another group down there had a young guy that was studying to become a recording engineer. He found us and asked us if he could do his master’s degree with the three of us performing. I came in with a handful of songs, and we recorded eight songs for free. About six months later, I recorded another five or six songs with my own money. Then I sat back, scratched my head, and said, “I’ve got 14 songs here, I can put a CD together.” That’s how my first CD came about. It wasn’t a plan from A to B.

When you were making those records, did you plan to produce and distribute independently, or did you plan to shop majors?

I never shopped majors. I don’t really know why. Maybe it was a lack of knowledge, or a lack of exposure. The first CD came out just before I came to Japan. When I came to Japan, I had the CD with me, and I was performing all these gigs in Japan. The CD was selling like hot cakes and that’s when I said, “This isn’t a bad little business I started here.” I was going to write a CD and see if I could do things on a bigger scale. As you know, this business is changing every day, and it seems as if the majors aren’t the way to go anyway. I’ve kind of been doing these last three CDs in a revolutionary age, where your music evolves to be independent now. You can actually make a living now being an independent artist, whereas 10 years ago you couldn’t. It was a lot harder.

It just speaks to the way that you promote. You work hard to promote your music in order to get it out there, especially with this UBL contest you wound up winning.

Yeah, that was tough work. I had a lot of great staff, and a lot of great supporters on board to really help me out with that. Mind you, one of the hardest things about being a musician is that once you have a product, you have to turn around and be a businessman. You’ve got to buckle up and see if you can make a business out of it. That’s what I try to do with the CD, promote it and push it. It’s a tough thing to do. Living in Japan, I’ve got a little bit of a bonus over here because I speak the language, but I have a hard time dealing with a lot of North American stuff at this stage.

When did you first decide to pack up and go to Japan? How did you get into the scene there?

Our band was playing a nightclub, and a Japanese agency approached us and said, “Do you guys want to come over to Japan?” To make a long story short, we packed up and flew over here. We did a six week gig at a couple of different venues. One was a theme park, and one was a five star hotel. It was really cool at the time. A couple members of the band at the time were married, so when the six weeks expired, they went back to Canada. I said to the agency, “I just graduated from university. Do you want me to stick around? Is there anything I can do?” I signed a different contract with them, and that lasted about two or three years. Then I went out on my own. Now that I can speak the language, I’ve just been marketing myself over here. Between you and me, I’m looking to get back to North America in the near future. I mean Japan’s been a fantastic ride. I just feel that, emotionally, I’m at the end of it. I am from Canada, and ten years is a long time to be away from friends and family. I’d like to find a way to get back. I made a lot of connections in Japan being here the past 10 years, and it’ll be a tough thing to throw them away, but I need a good kick in the butt anyhow, and a good challenge again.

The adventure is half the fun of being a musician.

Yeah, it is. I mean, it’s kind of scary. You wouldn’t recommend it to your friends unless they absolutely love it.

Talk to me about the movie scores you worked on.

That was just me trying to network, putting my music out there as much as I could. Some filmmakers put a pretty good movie together—it put a smile on my face. I emailed them and said, “If you guys have anyplace where you need some backup music, give me a call.” It was another two or three months before I got an email back from them. They just gave me the feel of the movie. I had to write music without seeing it. I recorded a bunch of stuff, and gave it to them. They threw it in, and it was a good experience. It wasn’t a Hollywood movie, but you’ve got to start there and work your way up.

You’ve got to find your way in. There’s a first step for every journey.

I did a lot of little things like that. I went back to Canada in the summer to promote the CD, and do a thank you tour for the UBL contest that I won. I was in the local news, and in the papers. I did a free show at an outdoor theater. A ton of people came down for that. UBL was great to me, and the contest was tough. I was in a tight race for first place. I had a crew and a team help me out. From Canada to America and Australia to Japan, I had people all over the world cheering for me. When I won, it was such a thrill that so many people put all this energy in it for me.
