For anybody who has edited video in Final Cut Pro, you know that there are many different ways to perform the same tasks. Recently I watched this free Apple seminar on how to rapidly edit news and sports packages. This tutorial is geared primarily for TV shooters and editors transitioning from tape-tape and into the world of non-linear editing. The video seminar is taught by long-time TV news shooter and editor Joe Torelli, who really knows his stuff.

I found the most useful information comes in the second video where Torelli shows an interesting way to edit clips on the timeline verses setting in and out points in the viewer. His techniques, geared for deadline productions, are something I will try when I need to edit something in a hurry. As newspaper websites use more and more video, learning to edit efficiently will only become more important.

First off this week Nathan showed us the creative commons distributing licenses. Basically what this is about is that these licenses are trying to find a balance between copyright and distribution; a "some rights reserved copyright" as they call it. There are four main licenses that they use:

Attribution. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.

Noncommercial. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for noncommercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.

Share Alike. You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work. (http://creativecommons.org/about/license/)

He then showed us archive.org; a non-profit site which is a database that offers access to any content for researchers, historians or scholars in digital form. This involves texts, videos, audio and music.

Materials Needed:

6 pieces of cotton woven fabric cut 2 x 3.5"

3 pieces of fusible fleece interfacting cut 2 x 3.5"

6 ribbons cut to 2.5 to 3 inches long

2.5 to 3" Unfinished wood ring

Iron

Sewing Machine

Step #1

Cut all pieces above. Iron Fusible Fleece to WRONG SIDE of 3 pieces of your cotton woven material.

Step #2

Sew 2 piece together RIGHT SIDES together using no more than a 1/4" Seam allowance. Start on the long side just 1/2" from edge. Be sure to go back and forth when you start to secure stitches. Continue around and add a FOLDED piece of ribbon to each SHORT edge by folding and tucking it between the layers as shown in the picture. I pinned them to stay in place but I actually tuck them in the ends as I sew along. Stop sewing about 1/2" from the edge on the long side you started on leaving a 1.5-2" hole.

Step #3

Trim the corners as shown and turn your pieces right side out through the hole you left on the long side. Push corners out with a sharp object. A pen or end of a pair of scissors works nicely. Be sure not to poke through the fabric. Turn the raw edges in along the hole you left. Sew around the whole piece 1/8th" from edge.

Step # 5

I use a zipper foot and put my needle in the farthest left position. Wrap your piece around the ring and match the edges. Stitch along the edge of the wood ring as close as you can. Make sure to go back and forth to secure stitches when you start and finish. Trim ends. Repeat steps 2-5 for each piece!

Step #6

GIve to the baby of your choice and admire your work ;)

When I upgraded my iPhone to 2.0, and installed several applications, I noticed that the backup is taking a very long time, and when I added more applications, the more time is taken. After some research, i found two ways how to remove the backup process and in this post I am going to show you step by step.

Method 1:

Step 1: Open iTunes

Step 2: Connect your iPhone/iPod

Step 3: Select the Sync button

Step 4: Then press the 'x' button when you see 'Backing Up iPhone'.

Method 2:

Step 1: Quit iTunes

Step 2: Open Terminal.app [For Mac users]

Step 3: Copy and Paste this [defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true] and hit return

Step 4: Open iTunes

Step 5: Plug in your iPhone and sync

To re-enable the backup feature just change the 'true' in Step 3 to 'false'

Hilaire Fernandes has announced that he has created over 50 screencasts illustrating the capabilities of DrGeoII. DrGeoII allows students at primary or secondary level to create and interactively manipulate geometric figures within definable constraints.

It is written using Morphic in Squeak Smalltalk, and can be embedded and mixed with existing Morph elements of the Squeak environment on the OLPC XO to produce some very impressive-looking activities to help students learn about mathematics and physics. The DrGeo wiki has lots of useful advice on how to get the best from the application.

Development of Dr. Geo II was partly sponsored by TOP, the Taiwan Open Source Project, with funding from the Taiwan Ministry of Economy, and by ESUG to promote the Smalltalk language.

Those French classes in high school will come in handy in situations like this. As well as those years of culinary school!

You can see how here. This little bag is only 4.5 inches long, 3 inches high and 2 inches deep. Just big enough for a lipstick and a compact (or better still, she suggests lots of candy).

Here's the instructions. I just happened to pick up some of that apple and pear fabric a few weeks ago.

Here's a list of some common Nokia phone software codes; most work on all Nokia phones, including S40/S60:

*#06# View IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity)

*#0000# Displays your phones software version

*#92702689# Depends on phone; some display life timer, others display serial number, date, etc.

*#7780# Soft Reset - enter code then your security code (typically "12345") to reset to factory settings, but retain data.

*#7370# HARD RESET - enter code then your security code (typically "12345"), to clear everything off your phone memory.
I repeat, this will delete everything off your phone.

This looks like some excellent information about model releases, which will probably come in handy f

This looks like some excellent information about model releases, which will probably come in handy for any of you photographers out there who are planning on shooting portraits for groups such as "100 Strangers" on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/)...

Before we begin, let's test your basic understanding of when a photo needs to have a model release:

Do I need a release for a photo I took of someone in a public place?

Should I get a release even if the person in the photo is unrecognizable?

Does profiting from the sale of a picture trigger the need for a release?

I'm going to put on a public display. Is a release required?

What if the person is dead?

Do I need a release if the subject is naked?

I have tons of pictures of my ex-girlfriend. Can she sue me if I sold them?

I own a portrait studio. Do I need clients to sign releases?

I took a lot of pictures as a hobby, and now I want to sell them. Do I need releases for all my pictures of people?

To score your knowledge, give yourself one point for each item you answered "Yes," and two points for each item you answered "No." In fact, make it three points. Now, total up all your points. If your score is above zero, you have a lot to learn about model releases.

Yes, none of these questions have an answer at all, and no, these were not trick questions. These are the most common questions I get from people just like you. The reason the questions have no answer is because none indicate a use for the image in question. Unless and until there is a specific use for a photo, there is no answer. In fact, it doesn't even make sense to ask the question in the first place. So, if you have already shot pictures, or you are about to shoot them, and you're concerned about whether you need a release for the pictures you shoot, the answer starts out no. However, if you plan to license the pictures to someone for publication, then a release may be necessary.

And here is where the wonderful world of Grey opens up to you. Is the image to be used in an advertisement? Or, is the image to be used in conjunction with an article in a magazine or newspaper? Understanding the difference between images used commercially or in editorial contexts is only the beginning. And while many people clearly understand that those differences exist, it's the over-simplification of them that gives a false perception on what you actually need to do. There is a tizzy of what-if's and exceptions that go to the very core of the First Amendment of the US Constitution. And once you go there, Whoa Nelly! You're in for some serious, eye-glazingly boring, sleepy time.

To save you from that, I'm going to try to characterize this stuff in ways that are fun, simple, and will make you a millionaire.

Ok, maybe not. But it'll be easier to understand. The reason why any of this is discussed to the degree that it is, is rooted in one of the most perpetuated fears about photography: that the photographer can get sued unless he gets a signed model release from the people (or properties) he photographs. The source of this anxiety is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the law: they think photographer's are the ones who are responsible because they take the photo and sell it to someone. But that's actually not where the real concern is. To address that, let's ask the most basic question, "who is ultimately responsible for a photo being released?"

Mam spory problem jak nazwać tego tutoriala, jego tytuł niezbyt oddaje jego treść, ale trudno. Zaczynamy.

1. Otwieramy dowolny obrazek i rysujemy okrągłe zaznaczenie (niekoniecznie na środku obrazka, ale właśnie ta jego część w końcowej wersji pozostanie ostra, natomiast reszta obrazka to będzie właśnie tytułowy efekt rozmycia).

2. Teraz odwracamy zaznaczenie - CTRL+SHIFT+I

3. Kopiujemy zaznaczony fragment (CTRL+V) i wklejamy go (CTRL+C) - jak łatwo zauważyć Photoshop wkleił go na nowej warstwie.

4. Na warstwie, którą tworzy skopiowany fragment stosujemy FILTER - BLUR - RADIAL BLUR z ustawieniami (50 - Zoom - Best).

5. GOTOWE!
