When I first saw pictures of Joseph Cornell's stash I thought I would never need that kind of space. Silly me. Having a luxury of pieces to choose from is wonderful, but continuous organizing would be the key, eh?

The wear on the bare metal boxes is lovely, but I do wish I had more of the white ones (and maybe fewer pink ones, yellow ones, and I have no idea what to do with my lone orange tin). The variety of sizes I've found makes decisions easier, I had no idea there were tins less than a centimeter across, but now I have a dozen - both round and rectangular.

Hinges are still scarce though. I've been making them out of various non-hingey things, but someday I may break down and buy teensy dollhouse size ones. I wonder if there are any that click closed, that can be very handy for secret compartments.

A group of volunteers were at the hall today sorting out the food shed, so we are ready for the harvest produce given by local churches and schools, that helps our food parcel programme at Christmas and during the year. Always ready for a photo opportunity, I spotted something you don't see everyday! I promise you it wasn't set up for the photo! The rest of the day was taken up with a variety of bits and pieces.

I was sad to hear of the death of Richard Wright, the keyboard player of Pink Floyd.

Sixteen people were arrested across Australia, with further raids expected in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.

It follows a year-long investigation after 15 million ecstasy pills were found hidden in a shipping container that arrived in Melbourne from Italy.

The tablets had an estimated street value of about A$450m (US$400m; £200m).

The ecstasy - a banned amphetamine with mild hallucinogenic properties - was found by Australian customs officers hidden in tins of tomatoes in a shipping container in June 2007.

Wedding favors are special gifts you give to your wedding guests as a sign of your appreciation of their attendance at your wedding. What better gift to give than one straight from your heart to their taste buds, fabulous cookies.

Particular favorites amongst bridal couples include: tiered wedding cake shaped cookies, with the wedding particulars listed in icing on the second tier. Cookies shaped like presents, and the perennial favorite of intertwined hearts bearing the names of the bride and groom. For an all time easy favorite, take a look at the Italian Wedding Cookie recipe below (aka: Mexican Wedding Cookie, Russian Tea Cakes, or Butterballs)

For a new unique twist on an old idea, you can create fortune cookie-shaped cookies made from regular cookie dough but in the shape of the Asian treat filled with your own fortunes or personalized wedding details.

The best part of giving wedding cookies as your favor of choice is the ability to package those favors in a number of unique, creative, fun and elegant ways. As many varieties of cookies as there are, there are double that in the way of favor boxes, tins, jars and bags, fashioned to hold those cookies.

So after church today, we (myself and Abby) went for brunch at a friends house. They live in the same area as us, but a little bit further north- almost into the next town. So anyway, I'd seen their house from the outside before but never the inside. As soon as I stepped in through the door, I was amazed at how relaxed the house felt. It was so immaculate, but not so much that you didn't feel comfortable. I'd always liked the couple since I'd met them last Christmas. They're both well suited and really friendly. I really hate going to other people's houses because they always make me feel bad about my own. So the food was amazing and we were there for about four hours, chatting up a storm and talking about everything under the sun. But I didn't eat too much, and I was happy about that because I hate eating so much that I feel like I'm going to burst :p

So tonight I felt so antsy that I cleaned the house from top-to-bottom. Going to house stores has the same effect on me, I get so many ideas that I scrub the house clean and then rearrange. I know it's a bit strange for me to call it a house when it's an apartment, but I'm a bit weird like that. I never realised how much of a time eater playing around on the computer is, but last night I got all my cleaning done (including going round with the vacuum cleaner- at 10.30pm!) before 11pm. Which gave me enough time to lock up, turn off everything and get ready for bed. And then I read for 30 minutes before falling asleep.

My friend's house also made me realise how plain our apartment is. I need to put more stuff on the walls :p I got to hit a rummage sale that was around the corner from the house, and I picked up a Fisher-Price school bus and a vintage Heinz tin (which was a total bargain for $2!) I love vintage stuff, I like playing into the whole housewife thing and I find it's easy to get into when you're surrounded by awesome vintage stuff. Like when I wear my vintage apron from the thrift store, it's like the spirit of it's previous owner is still in.

I'm gonna ask my friends at church to keep an eye out for vintage tins. I want more now, I'm hooked :D I actually use them too. I put my big bag of kernel corn in my Heinz tin so I can access it easily when I want to make some popcorn. I need more shelves too, oh and some of those awesome tin signs. The apartment manager next door has some really awesome ones, but she's into the more Santa-Fe feel, not really the retro/kitchy 1950's thing that I am. Ooh I have the need to hit a thrift store now and look for awesome kitchen stuff :p

For those of you interested in cupcakes, get thee immediately to The Reject Shop!

I have discovered the most fantastic little silicone cupcake patty pans: for $5 you get a DOZEN brightly coloured (purple, pink, green and blue) individual cake pans that will allow you to make the most fantastic cupcakes.

As you know, I am a new convert to the wonders of silicone bakewear. A neophyte in the world of cupcakes, I was delighted to find these little pans because I hate using the little paper cases - the cake always sticks to the paper, and the pans (for me) often slip and rarely fill evenly. Both of these evils are prevented with the silicone and a big plus is that they're reusable. Never feel bad about throwing away paper cases again!

Plus, they're bright enough to be left on the cake for ease of transportation.

The Reject Shop carries three types - round, square, and flower-shaped. I bought a pack each of the round and square (the flowers didn't appeal to me for some reason) and I advise you to so the same. Given that The Reject Shop doesn't always carry items longer than once-offs, I suggest that you snaffle these up quickly.

I made a batch of cupcakes last night to try these out but unfortunately they all evaporated before I could take a photo. I didn't even get a chance to ice the little buggers! Apparently something about a good, old-fashioned vanilla cake mix triggers some primeval urge in The Husband to go forth and devour. What a good excuse to go and bake another batch today! It's cold here today so I can't think of anything better than to be in a warm kitchen with the oven going. What else can I bake today? I suspect we'll have pizza tonight for sure!!

:)

Yard sales are a great place to look for unusual containers to use for plants. Old tins, lunchboxes, baskets, bird feeders, old stove-top coffeepots, old metal pots and coffee cans can all make great plant containers. Just remember that there must be drainage—poke a hole or two in the bottom and you’ll be all set.

I always thought it was strange that people would put their old shoes, some quite worn, in yard sales. I had better-looking gardening sneakers at home. Then it dawned on me that they would make unique planters! I found a cute pair of toddler saddle shoes for 25 cents at a garage sale and brought them home for my first experiment. I filled them with good potting soil and tucked in lobelia along with some long-acting fertilizer. I tied the laces into cute bows and put them on from front door step. They grew like crazy! Anyone who came to my door commented on how original they were. I had to remember to water them often, since there wasn’t a lot of room in there.

My aunt gave me an old work boot that she found in her shed; it was well worn, to say the least. I filled it with dirt and planted “hens & chicks” wherever I could fit a root through a hole. I leave it outside year round and it keeps coming back, year after year. The old boot sits in a spot in my flower bed that is easily seen. It, too, gets a lot of notice.

My mother gave me an old pair of boots she had; black vinyl lace-up things that she used to wear in the fall before snow came. They were in pretty good shape but she didn’t want them anymore. I filled them up with good potting mix and planted impatients and alyssum in them. They sit on my back porch.

I’ve heard of using an old purse hanging from the back of a chair as a container; might be really cute with ivy or a hanging petunia coming out of it. A pair of shoes tied together, hanging over a railing, planted with lobelia would be quite a conversation piece as well.

Be brave and open-minded when it comes to looking at old things with a new eye as unique plant containers; check our your basement and attic and you might be surprised to see an old wooden miter box that just calls for marigolds, or an old metal watering can that could be overflowing with bright white petunias. Go wild and have fun in your quest to find original plant container ideas!

Self Appointed Liberators of the Retail Sector demand OPEN MINDS - and WALLETS ?

Arvind Singhal: Liberating the retail sector

http://www.business-standard.com/common/news_article.php?leftnm=lmnu2&subLeft=3&autono=324337&tab=r

The report must be read more carefully, and with an open mind, by those vociferous elements in the UPA government (read: Left parties), Mayawati of BSP, and our own Don Quixotes going by names such as India FDI Watch.

Retail giants operating without license
Making the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation a captive, retail giants are setting up shops in various centres in the city. Big Bazaar still functions without the Corporation’s licence, said Mayor C. Jayan Babu.

ITC Chaupal Fresh expansion on hold

ITC, the fresh vegetable retailer under the brands Choupal Fresh have hit a pause on their expansion plans. Currently the company operates 24 Choupal Sagars - large format rural stores that complement the e-choupal initiative. It also has 27 Choupal Fresh stores in Hyderabad, Pune and Chandigarh.

Australian farmers "ripped off" by supermarkets

In Australia, the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has told the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission into grocery pricing that the major grocery chains are ripping off consumers and farmers by labelling the same products differently.

K. RAHEJA HyperCity to abandon neighbourhood store format

K. Raheja-owned HyperCITY Retail has abandoned plans announced last year to launch a neighbourhodd store format under the ExpressCITY banner.

Food prices are growing, but farmers' share of the profit is not

The farmer's share of the retail food dollar is about the same today as it was in the 1970s. Take corn, for example. According to economists at the American Farm Bureau Federation, the farmer receives less than 8 cents for the corn used in an 18-ounce box of corn flakes selling for $3.30 at the grocery store. It is pretty much the same for a loaf of bread. The farmer receives about 16 cents from a loaf of bread that sells for $1.78. The farmer's share of a 5-pound bag of flour costing $2.39 is $1.10.

Govt needs to chalk out national retail policy: Assocham

The government needs to formulate a national retail policy to facilitate co-existence of both organised and unorganised retail, besides setting up an independent regulator for governing the retailing sector, a report by industry body Assocham says.

Decision on FDI in retail unlikely in UPA regime

apart from the broad political opposition, the Government has come under severe pressure from scores of trade and industry bodies from across the country against FDI in retail. A total of 44 trade and industry associations have represented to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP)

Organised retail to capture 25 pc market by 2011

In a surprise finding that organised retail is growing faster than expected in India, a study has forecast that this segment could account for a quarter of the total retail revenues by 2011 from the current 8 per cent share.

Retail will drive growth of fruits and vegetables: Pawar

According to the ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, about 72 per cent of the fruit and vegetable produced in the country goes waste because of lack of proper retailing and adequate storage capacity. P K Mishra, secretary in the ministry's department of agriculture and co-operation, said so while was speaking at a Fruit and Vegetable Summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Indian Railways offering retail space
The Indian Railways is soon going to offer around 4,800 hectares of land to retail and logistics companies to set up retail outlets, agri-retail infrastructure and warehouses. Around 3,000 sites have already been identified by the railways across the country for the purpose.

Mom & Pop shops eye cooperatives to take on big retailers

Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal (BUVM), the biggest national-level association of mom and pop stores (kirana stores) that comprises 17,000 state- and district-level associations across 27 states, is planning to form co-operatives throughout India helping its members benefit from a common sourcing and shared infrastructure (logistics, storage and billing) platform.

AUSTRALIA calls for overhaul of planning laws

A report in Australia, commissioned by Urban Taskforce Australia, recommends a review of state planning laws regulating new supermarkets and large food stores.

Reliance to invest Rs 5,000 crore in converting 700-odd closed fuel pumps into malls/ multiplexes

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) which incurred a loss of about Rs 800 crore on operations of its 1,432 fuel stations during 2007-08 is looking at converting about 700 to 800 of them into shopping malls and multiplex halls.

Well, off to Londinium Thursday to The Greats Awards and acting like a giddy kipper at the prospect of 2 days away from work! I have had to pay for this time off this week though! I have seen more makers this week and have lots of lovely new work due in Saturday when I return. One maker from Ilkley brought me gorgeous pieces made from vintage recycled fabrics - one lavender bag has been made from fabric she had as curtains in the'70s! Another maker has developed a technique for making jewellery from vintage scrabble tiles embossed with japanese papers and glazed - all presented in a matching tin.

No images yet folks as I want to keep you guessing but call in Saturday and you will not be disappointed.

Oh, and one maker has just finished a commission of an absolutely gorgeous red sparkly crown for my customer's 3 year old granddaughter and it is so lovely sitting proud on a red velvet cushion - I promise you a photo soon!

Bye for now, see you Saturday.

This weekend I have been doing a bit of tidying and the hoarder in me finds it hard to throw things out that are perfectly useful.......except that I have no immediate use for them!! I also have lots of little pieces of card and paper or stamped card where I have 'tested' colours etc but I hate to put it in the bin! So I though I would give myself a 'Heap of Scraps' challenge! Below are pics of two tins I couldn't bring myself to dispose of and a pile of card and DSP offcuts along with a few ribbon offcuts and stamped images. I hope to bring you a few of my creations with these items over the next few days!

I also have another cyberchallenge picture to show you. This is another 6 x 6 page and the challenge for this project was the layout (8th one down the page). I have used Blue Bayou, Groovy Guava and Whisper White card with Blue Bayou and Groovy Guava ink. I printed off the journalling - my handwriting is not that great - and added a bit of glitz with the 2-way glue pen and some dazzling diamonds (such a quick and easy way to add the bling!).

This Lemon Cookie Container will find a new home on my desk for hiding pens and pencils. Instead of making a glue paste and getting a little messy, I downloaded one of my grandmothers hankies ( this is similar to covering boxes) I printed it out on full sheet label - peeled off the backing and stuck it on! presto! You could do it with family photos or any design to match your accessories!
