Voila l'ambiance de mon départ de chez moi ce matin...ce qui est pratique en période de vacances, c'est d'avoir tout un immeuble a soi, so no soucy pour le volume ^^) J'adore cet album!

...26 aout 2008 a l'Olympia, je serais en vacances, j'y pense ^^

Già che ci sono, dopo la collaborazione che ha dato vita ai Raconteurs, ne approfitto per spendere due parole su un'altra collaborazione recente: dietro al lungo e altisonante nome The Last Shadow Puppets si nascondono infatti Alex Turner, leader degli Arctic Monkeys, e Miles Kane dei Rascals.
Uno stuzzicante esperimento costituito da ritmi incalzanti e rollanti (lo stampo delle scimmie artiche è riconoscibilissimo, ma meno banale, più filtrato ed elaborato), melodie malinconiche e scanzonate, arrangiamenti orchestrali (opera del geniale violinista Owen Pallet, che ha esordito da solo col nome Final Fantasy in He poos clouds, un lavoro molto originale). Permane l'immediatezza del rock'n'roll indie molto in voga oggi, ma con un taglio decisamente più sperimentale... insomma si sarà capito che non adoro gli artisti coinvolti (Alex Turner su tutti - scandalo!), ma non posso negare che l'idea e la riuscita di questo album realizzano un pop di gran qualità, da non sottovalutare. Mi fanno venire in mente i Beatles più sperimentali dei Settanta (altro gruppo che non adoro - scandalo bis!). Gran merito va anche ad un produttore di tutto rispetto come James Ford, almeno per quanto riguarda la capacità di far approdare al grande pubblico realtà alternative come gli Arctic Monkeys stessi o i Klaxons.

+ Verder vind ik ook Yann Tiersen geniaal, sinds ik "Le fabouleux destin d'Amélie Poulin" heb gezien-zij het met een beetje vertraging-, het is hij die de soundtrack voor deze film heeft geschreven en gemaakt.

+ Beirut, een folkband opgericht door een Amerikaan na een bezoekje in Nederland en het horen van Slavische klanken gedraaid door zijn bovenbuurman. Vooral hun single Nantes is bij ons bekend.

I never bought into the hype surrounding The Arctic Monkeys when they hit a couple years ago. Something about them just really rubbed me the wrong way, and I could never put my finger on it. Until I realized that that was the problem precisely. The Monkeys sounded like they were putting ten totally disparate influences into a blender, and the sounds that they created from that just never seemed to jell properly or complement each other. Some Libertines here, some Specials there, a dash of Oasis, and a healthy sprinkling of Pulp, all filtered through an oddly dance-punk lens. In theory, I should love Arctic Monkeys. But it's just a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.

But when I heard about Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner's new project The Last Shadow Puppets, it sounded right up my alley. Grandiose chamber pop in the vein of Scott Walker's first four solo joints? Sign me up!

By and large, the album doesn't disappoint. There's a clearly identifiable aesthetic tying the songs together, but they're not what I'd call same-y. They're hyper-melodic, and each songs features a propulsive, anecdotal narrative. I'm always impressed by songwriters that can pull off story-songs with aplomb, and Turner certainly does so here.

The Age of the Understatement's 'My Mistakes Were Made For You' is easily my favorite track on the record. From the rich orchestration to the biting surf guitar leads, the suave delivery of the scrumptious minor-key melody...there's nothing here not to love. And perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that the album as a whole is so good that it has me reconsidering my stance on the Arctic Monkeys. Not too shabby for a side-project.

Sua nova banda (se é que posso chamá-la assim), chamada The Last Shadow Puppets chega na mídia com uma pretensão que ninguém esperava do menino que até pouco tempo ainda estava cheio de espinhas na cara. Não vou nem entrar nos méritos de dizer se achei bom ou ruim.O fato é que a seriedade das letras e a ousada mistura de guitarras e violões com violinos e instrumentos de orquestra, fazem de "The Age of The Understatement" um disco no mínimo instigante pelo contraste absurdo com a primeira banda dele.

Resumindo, vale a pena ver como uma mesma pessoa é capaz de fazer coisas tão diferentes e provar que não estamos submetidos aos rótulos limitadores impostos pela mídia e pela indústria cultural. Vejam os clipes e comprovem...

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement

The Last Shadow Puppets es una banda formada por el vocalista principal de los Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner junto con Mile Kane, el vocalista de la reciente banda The Rascals. Se les unieron a ellos James Ford en la Batería.

El inicio de las grabaciones tuvo lugar en Francia a finales de Agosto de 2007 y contó con nuevo material añadido entre Agosto y Diciembre. En Diciembre se unió el violinista Owen Pallett quien, junto a la London Metropolitan Orchestra, se encargaría de los arreglos de cuerdas.

Con un sonido muy diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbrados Arctic Monkey, pues este trabajo es mucho más elegante por los arreglos de cuerdas y los sonidos de orquesta. En ocaciones ( por su acento puramente británico) nos recuerdan a Starsailor.

Alle Welt (oder zumindest alle Bond-Fans) warten mit Spannung darauf, wer denn jetzt den Titelsong für den neuen anstehenden Streifen beisteuern wird und, beinahe zu zeitig um es als Zufall wahrzunehmen, erscheint The Age Of The Understatement.

Als hätten es Arctic Monkeys-Sänger Alex Turner und sein Kumpel Miles Kane (The Rascals) darauf abgesehen, klingt dieses Album wie eine Bewerbung.
Was man hier hört, könnte problemlos der Soundtrack zu 60er-affinen Medienprodukten wie No One Lives Forever oder Austin Powers sein. Auch die zielsichere Musikauswahl Tarantinos (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill), so mag man vermuten, wäre hier nicht ohne weiteres, ohne es zumindest mal in Erwägung zu ziehen, dran vorbei gekommen.
The Age Of The Understatement klingt im Grunde so, als hätten die Arctic Monkeys (das geht alleine auf Alex Turner`s Konto) den Soundtrack für die 60er so geschrieben, wie wir jungen Menschen uns die Zeit der Blumen vorstellen. Schnörkelloser Pop aus vergangenen Zeiten, der, so kann man vermuten, im anvisierten Zeitalter selbst nicht nur auf wohlwollende Ohren gestoßen wäre. Zu poppig und zu pompös wäre es damals wohl wahrgenommen worden. Doch das Pompöse ist synchron gesehen die Vermittlungsinstanz durch die Zeitalter und lässt sich eindeutig auf die Arbeit mit dem 22-köpfigen London Metropolitan Orchestra zurückführen. Ein Hauch von Ennio Morricone wird, ohne dabei großartig anzustoßen, über das gesamte Gebilde gelegt und macht die Platte zum potentiellen Soundtrack.
Also - wer weiss, vlt schafft es einer der Songs, z.B. der herausragende Titeltrack, den neuen Streifen „Quantum of Solace“ musikalisch zu untermalen. Bezweifelt werden darf das, wenn man den Weg bedenkt, den die Bondmaschine mit Danjel Craig eingeschlagen hat.

Es wäre aber auch nicht weiter tragisch. Dieser Langspieler hat das Potenzial seinem Namen alle Ehre zu machen und in einigen Playern auf Dauerrotation zu laufen. Übrigens auch, oder gerade, in denjenigen, die keinem eingefleischten Arctic Monkeys-Fan gehören.

I have a standard test that I use to judge an album on its first hearing. I play it in its entirety on my way to work. Walking, waiting for trains and avoiding eye contact on the tube. It needs to hold my attention away from the newspaper I'm reading, make me tap my toes waiting for the District Line and provide a soundtrack to my life as I walked hurriedly between stations. So I was delighted that Alex Turner's latest musical conquest did just this.

As with most of my generation, I admire the Arctic Monkeys. Their cocky persona and spot on lyrics relate to people of my age, and not wanting to use a cliché, they are a voice for a newly cynical generation. A generation that's harder to please. One that is a world apart from those gone, so it's interesting to see Alex Turner use inspiration from an era past. The Age of the Understatement casts a figure out of early James Bond-esque scene setting, using strings to paint a picture of 60s and 70s elegance, matched against a poignant Sheffield accent.

But I mustn’t forget Turner's partner in the Shadow Puppets. Miles Kane, of Rascals fame, met Turner when his former band, The Little Flames, were supporting the Monkeys during a 2005 tour. The pair have played together ever since, with Kane playing guitar on the excellent closing song of Favourite Worst Nightmare, 505. And it is obvious that they share a fondness for the same type of music, drawing inspiration from early Bowie and the sixties' artist, Scott Walker, who claims authorship on this form of "wall of sound", orchestral music.

There is a definite epic sound to this style of music. Each song leaves a little of itself on the listener. The opening title track The Age of the Understatement, is ambitious and impressive, booming up to big crescendo's of sound and stirring your desire to like this distinctive album. Whereas the second track Standing Next To Me has a more recognisable Spanish guitar twang, making it forcibly impossible not to tap your feet (Note - this is said to be the next single from the album). And it continues like this, each song slightly different to the previous one, but each lending itself to a warming mixture of Turner's lyrics and a imposing musical background. I Don't Like You Anymore sounds the most like an Arctic Monkey's track, whereas Only The Truth has a haunting Adam & the Ants theme, leaving you half expecting Turner to scream "Prince Charmingggg...Prince Charmingggg...". But even then it's likeable.

I have to say that when I first heard Turner was doing a little side project, I was left a little glass half empty. His voice is so distinctive that I couldn't see how he would create anything but a Arctic Monkey's cover band. So I'm glad I was proved wrong. He hasn't created a band to mimic the Monkey's because this sound is so unique. It truly is like nothing else out at the moment. Which is refreshing. The only down side to The Last Shadow Puppets is that they’re not touring until late this year, due to their responsibilities to their own bands. But when they do open ticket sales to their live show, rest assured, I'll be first in line...

Veintidós años. Tres dentro de la industria musical. Y tres años consecutivos con disco número uno en la lista de Reino Unido. Alex Turner no sabe qué es dar un paso en falso. Y tardaremos en vérselo dar. The Age of the Understatement muestra que ideas no le faltan. Ni ambición, ni buenos amigos.

La alianza con Miles Kane (The Rascals, The Little Flames) para formar el dúo The Last Shadow Puppets produce un cambio de sonido que le abre las miras y le aleja de Arctic Monkeys. Algunos le consideraban un producto del nuevo milenio, que tomaba las guitarras de The Strokes y The Libertines y las letras del rap de The Streets, pero que no iba más allá. En buena medida gracias a Kane, ahora retrocede a los 60-70 y deja claro un nuevo abanico de influencias; las versiones de Bowie y Billy Fury apuntan por dónde van las cosas.

El resultado son canciones de tres minutos en la línea de lo que harían hoy unos The Coral más orquestales. Para ello han contado con otros dos colaboradores de gran nivel: Owen Pallet/Final Fantasy ha compuesto unos elegantes arreglos para cuerda y viento, mientras que James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco) se ha encargado de la producción.

Otro punto clave es la facilidad con que han compartido micrófono. Mezclan sus voces acoplándose de tal manera que el inconfundible timbre y acento de Turner no se despega de Kane. Dos voces muy personales que, bien a la vez o bien por turnos, se convierten en gemelas para cantar unas letras que muestran el desparpajo propio de dos post-adolescentes con una locuacidad, incontinencia y ambición únicas.

De momento no habrá giras para lo que se mantiene, todavía, como proyecto paralelo. The Rascals publican su debut este junio y ya han iniciado su gira veraniega, mientras que Arctic Monkeys no son capaces de esperar a entrar en el estudio de nuevo (llevan dos discos, dos EP’s, seis singles y un DVD desde 2005). Miles Kane además sacó tres singles con The Little Flames. No pueden parar de componer y grabar de forma compulsiva. Y que sigan. Las listas necesitan más números uno de tanta calidad.

Aprovechando que The Last Shadow Puppets (Alex Turner y Miles Kane) son uno de los grupos más solicitados de este blog, que la semana pasada por fin se filtró su primer disco -bastante notable aunque un poco repetitivo, por cierto-, no está de más ver cómo se las gastan estos dos post-adolescentes en directo. Armados sólo con gos guitarras, una acústica y una eléctrica, Turner y Kane desgranan tres temas de The Age Of The Understatement, y de regalo el videoclip del primer single. ¿Alguien ha dicho épica? Porque aquí hay mucha, sí... Dentro.

This week, John Kennedy, host of the Xposure program on London's alternative-rock radio station, XFM, spoke with Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys (pictured above, left) and Miles Kane of The Rascals (pictured above, right) about their side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. The album made by Turner and Kane under The Last Shadow Puppets' banner, titled The Age Of The Understatement, was released in the UK this week and will come out in the United States on May 6th.

I think the title track is an interesting song. To me, it sounds like the them to a spaghetti western that is yet to be filmed.

'The Last Shadow Puppets' heet de nieuwe band van vrienden Turner en Kane. Een eerste single werd alvast goed voorbereid met een deftige clip. 'The age of the understatement' is de naam van hun debutplaat alsook hun debutsingle. Mij kan het alleszins méér dan bekoren, al ben ik tot nader order ook méér dan fan van Mister Turner.
