Querida Adriana,

puedes no creerles, glorificarlos o vilipendiarlos.

so today i decided that i’d be content eating pomegranates for the rest of my life, and nothin

so today i decided that i'd be content eating pomegranates for the rest of my life, and nothing but. i hadn't had a pomegranate in a while, and i came home and had one today. its just such a vibrant thing: i love it (don't worry i'll eat other stuff, i just need to start eating pomegranates more often).

i've found two fantastic blogs today that i just feel compelled to share. both different, yet both very appealing reads. one thing that i see similar between them is that both authors just have this indescribable feel to their writing. it just feels so human, i wish i could write at the level they do.

http://thenightblog.wordpress.com/

http://apricot-tea.com/

one thing that i've always looked for is a really interesting blog written by guy my age, unfortunately i haven't found one. i feel like there are a lot of girls in high school writing blogs, but not many boys. it's probably something with the whole macho complex stage i seemed to skip. it's also pretty frustrating that whenever i search for gay on the wordpress blog search i end up with cheep amateur porn :-\.

so one thing i realized today is that i've been in the same school district for ten. TEN years! my class actually isn't that big, roughly about 240 students. there are still people that i'm fascinated by, that i've never met, but really want to. plus other people in other grades. i think i need to stop limiting myself by the rules others have set out (the invisible web of lies and rumors that separates us all from one another). there are a bunch of people i would really love to get to know.

there's this one girl i was friendly with as a tot in elementary school, but lost touch with. now some people don't like her, but i find her fascinating. she's so nice, i'm so glad i've started to get to know her a bit more this year. she's not at all who i thought she was, or expected her to be. i love when that happens, when you realize that you've assigned certain things to someone, and they prove you wrong. i think we all do it sometimes, where we dismiss a person. i'm really trying to change how i approach meeting people, i think it makes all the difference going into something with an open mind.

anyways lets talk about what's in my dock!

the software that lives in my dock (i'll post later a list of other installed programs)

finder - the finder in leopard is amazing, fast, cute effective 'nuff said.

dashboard - it launches me into widget world!

safari - the savanna navigator that seems to never keep me on track, that i love anyways

firefox 3 beta 5 - my standards complient browser friend, i can't wait until firefox 3 is released! :)

mail - i always said that i would never use a desktop mail client: i evidently lied. i use the to-do a lot too.

adium - with my custom yoda icon and design (i made part of the theme) adium keeps me connected in my style

joost - alas an old friend. i watched many a episodes of jericho on joost.

handbrake - sans ugly pineapple icon handbrake helps me copy dvd's into movie files for iPod or MacBook :)

songbird - an interesting concept: itunes like music management built on firefox code, works like a browser, intergrates well with everything, and pretty. i'll switch when itunes annoys me too much...

itunes - a bloated, un-featured whore.

veoh player - plays/downloads videos from veoh for me. also pretty.

vlc - god of media players, plays anything. i mean anything.

pixelmator - a fantastic image editor

photobooth - good times with my mac :)

burn - a free cd burning program, data and music (for when i'm not on speaking terms with itunes).

audacity - a free cross-platform audio editor that i adore.

imovie oh eight - love/hate relationship

pages - best full featured word processor ever. kicks word butt!

textedit - my text scratch pad for everything, notes copy paste etc

bean - a text editor that goes full screen. i write my blog here now, and copy into the box in wp :)

it's only wednesday and i must make it to friday. i hope to be back soon! a special shout out to cindy, who is a wonderful friend flying 1,845 miles this summer to visit old friends. cindy, i love you, and you can't get here fast enough!

peace ~ dave

Since I'm talking about TextEdit, I'll point out that I just discovered the capability to create tables and lists, using the Format/Text menu...

See example (click for larger):

If you do a lot of writing, but you think that Word is like trying to water your flowers with a fire hydrant, you should give TextEdit a try. I have also used Bean, another great word processor for writers, and
also free.

If you look closely at the TextEdit icon in OS X 10.5, you'll notice some unreadable text on a page. Fortunately, you can copy any icon and paste it in Preview to see it at full size. When I opened it, I found the following poem from Apple's Think Different ad campaign from about 10 years ago...

and the rest of the poem...

They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world,
Are the ones who do.

The commercial was originally produced by Chiat Day in 1997 for Apple, at the start of their big turnaround to profitability. It's worth the watch if you haven't seen it in a while...

I'm still undecided whether to install Ubuntu or use VMWare Fusion to use Linux. As for Microsoft Windows as long as I don't need to use .NET I don't think I'll install it. Not even with the free licenses Microsoft provides University of Minho students.

First I had to decide what to install:

Firefox

del.icio.us UNSAFE add-on for Firefox

Portuguese Dictionary add-on for Firefox

<strike>Pidgin</strike> Adium

<strike>Nero</strike> Toast Titanium

Office

Photoshop

TextMate

Ruby on Rails

Java SDK

Netbeans

Glassfish

GHC

Erlang

MacTex

oXygen

BookPedia

DB2 (will IBM make it available for mac anytime soon?)

The question you are probably asking is why Firefox instead of Safari!? Because the damn unsafe add-on for del.icio.us is just that: del.icio.us! I just can't live without it. Maybe if the guys over there worked the basics of security we could say that it's both excellent and safe! And don't say there's a add-on for Safari as well. I'll only accept it if the add-on is as good as the one provided by Yahoo.

Now we go for the fun part. The problems and solving them. Your attention please, this is only fun for me when I do it on my computer so it won't be pleasure if you ask me to fix your computer! Joana this one is for you, I know how your mind thinks.. Almost as badly as mine. Oh well, we are related aren't we? :\ Please release those crazy Christmas photos to the world! :X

I'll start with a small OS free tip and then go for the Q/A part. If you are Portuguese like myself you just hate all the results that google gives you from .br domains. Most of the results are overrated and most of the times you just wish that they weren't there. If this is the case just do your normal search in google but write -br in the end. Just test this, go to google and type governo brasileiro -br. It works ;)

Easy. Check Rúben's blog @ http://blog.0x82.com/2007/12/mac-os-and-usb-mouse.html

<strike>Still don't know. Anyone? If you want to test the bug just do this (from here):</strike>

Cracked it! At least I have a partial fix for Migrating documents from Ubuntu to Mac OS X Leopard:

cmd + space terminal enter

{go to the directory where the file is}

bash$ iconv -f ISO-8859-15 -t UTF-8 {filename} > UTF8-{filename}

For me it was:

bash$ iconv -f ISO-8859-15 -t UTF-8 Pam.tex > UTF8-Pam.tex

And yes PAM is as in Pluggable Authentication Modules. So I have a latex work on that :P

Where is type-a-name application? It's not on the dock.

Just press cmd + space and type what you are looking for. This is called spotlight. Either this or open Finder and go to applications.

Why doesn't it show my dashboard when I go to the left/whatever corner?

Have you even configured your mac? Common.. Click the apple on the top left corner and go to System Preferences. Exposé and Spaces. And now that you are there take a look around and configure all the other things that you neglected.

This computer is always underlining the words in red. (when the spelling is right :P If not you are a dumbass for asking this!)

Just press cmd + mouse and change the language. Thanks Nuno Veloso from Apple Tech Team for this tip.

How can I see the right mouse button menu?

crtl + mouseclick

PageUp/PageDown!?

fn+ up
fn + down

If after this you still feel like reading about Mac OS for rookies - like myself - you can check this section in Arun Gupta's Blog or check this extensive list of Keyboard Shortcuts. Have fun!

Now let's get back to work, something almost impossible when your doing a report on LaTeX and the encodings are never right.

One final touch: ctrl + alt + cmd + 8. Merry Christmas! :)

Update: I'm getting a ton of visitors to this article, so I just wanted to say "welcome". After reading this article, please sample my Top 12 Posts list and my other articles on technology and educational technology.

I don't run OpenOffice on my Macbook since I use MS Office or iWork for everything, but I have a ton of old OpenOffice files sitting around, left over from my Linux days when I did use OpenOffice. I just discovered that under Leopard, you can Quick-Look an OpenOffice word processing document (with the .odt format) even though OpenOffice is not installed:

And if you double-click an OpenOffice word processing document, it opens up -- in TextEdit, fully formatted!

Maybe TextEdit played nicely with OpenOffice documents all along, but it's still a nice discovery. Leopard's got its quirks and flaws, but it also seems to have a lot of nice undocumented features like these.

It turns out that if you want to TextEdit to use more of the paper and shrink those ghastly 1 inch margins (which are, frankly, way too big for a lot of purposes) then you can't do it. Well okay, you can do it by opening the RTF file in a real text editor and hacking the RTF directly. «\margl1440» sets the left margin to 1 inch (72 Adobe approved points in an inch, 20 thingummies in a point).

I don't know what to be more appalled by. That this 1 inch margin is hard-coded into TextEdit (UTSL); that TextEdit ignores the Page Setup margins; that you have to edit the RTF by hand; that this works?

Can I also just say that if someone had said that the units specified in the RTF file were 127/7200000 of a metre then they would've been called insane.

Another year, another set of Christmas labels to print. If you recall, my wife likes the labels to families to be printed to "John & Jane Smith" or "The Smith Family", depending on whether the recipients have children. Thus, it is not a direct export from Address Book and needs to be scripted.

In previous years, I used an AppleScript that I wrote to dump the information to an AppleWorks database and use its label printing tools from there. I no longer have AppleWorks installed, so I needed to find another way to automatically print labels to my wife's standards. The latest version of Office for Mac is very AppleScript-friendly, but I grew frustrated trying to figure out how to dump the content to an Excel spreadsheet. Then I read a review about Mail Factory, which is a dedicated labels and envelopes solution. It imports from a comma separated text file, so I just rigged my old AppleScript to dump its values to TextEdit. This worked marvelously.

While playing with Mail Factory, I noticed that it has the ability to display an address as "John and Jane Smith" or "The Smith Family", which can be set separately for each address imported. The application is AppleScript-able, so I may take the time to re-write my script to have Mail Factory import directly from Address Book and set the label's content appropriately. This would cut out the middle step of writing a text file.
