This week was spent finishing off loose ends and preparing for my literature review. I finished all

This week was spent finishing off loose ends and preparing for my literature review. I finished all the blogging related to Ubicomp, and made the UH thesis LaTeX style publicly available in a more accessible format. I started the literature review (read and commented on 1 measly paper so far), but now have a central location for my literature review notes.

At this point I feel I really have to read as many papers in the area as I can to get a better idea what has already been done, and what is likely to be done in the near future. Naturally, both those things are areas I would like to avoid.

Past weeks accomplishments:

Finished blogging last 2 days of conference

Wrote up items relevant for PET from conference

Wrote up lessons learned for future conference attendance

Installed TeX

Put UHM LaTeX thesis style up on Google Code for broader adoption, and Google Group for discussion

Created CSDL tech report for proposal draft

Hours worked: 15 (target: 15 hr)

Plans for coming week:

Read 4 papers from literature review list

Look at websites with related functionality from list

Add publications from PET workshop paper to BibTeX

Write up outline of final tech report

Fill in more parts of research portfolio

Pointers to work products:

Blog posts: Ubicomp day 2, Ubicomp day 3, Ubicomp action items, lessons learned

Shell of dissertation proposal as CSDL tech report

Literature review notes (not publicly accessible)

Google Code site for latex-uhm-thesis and associated Google Group

Cool links:

Instapaper is a bookmarking site with a twist. It's designed to collect URLs for things you want to read later. You use the provided bookmarklet to add things to your reading list, and then as you read things from the list they are recorded as read. That's nice, but the real power comes from the associated iPhone application that can download web pages from your list for offline reading. It also has a text mode that does a good job of rendering web pages as rich text, which displays faster and with less clutter.

Fonte: http://www.unita.it/view.asp?IDcontent=79363

Scheda biografica Gian Luigi Bonelli

I mentioned this previously as something that I have on my computer, as well as something that I use

I mentioned this previously as something that I have on my computer, as well as something that I used to type up my calculus problem sets. It is essentially typesetting software that allows you to focus on the content instead of worrying about the formatting. For my own purposes I did not exactly find that statement to be true, but you do hear it in various websites and books about $latex \LaTeX$. What I found is that once I settled on a format that worked, I much preferred the look of the mathematics that was produced.

For instance, many math teachers I know use MathType to put equations into their Word documents. I found that I could do that as well in OpenOffice, but I started using the OpenOffice math editor because MathType did not integrate as well with that suite. From there it was a small step to $latex \LaTeX$ because I was starting to get used to typesetting the math in OpenOffice. I had never heard of $latex \LaTeX$ until a couple years ago when we hired a new teacher who really wanted to be a mathematician and not a teacher. She was very excited about it, and she kept pushing us to look at it. I was not ready at the time and she left to pursue her Ph.D. in mathematics after only one year at our school, but last summer I decided it was time to learn, and I made the decision, somewhat stupidly in retrospect, to type up my Calculus problems using it. The learning curve was steep in the beginning, but I was committed and eventually it got easier. And actually, it was not so stupid. I learned $latex \LaTeX$ and now my problems are written with it rather than having to transfer them from MS Word or OpenOffice.

It is worth seeing some comparisons. The statements on the left were made using MathType and those on the right were created with $latex \LaTeX$.

I really like the look of the math on the right. Of course, one drawback is that to produce the first MathType expression on the left all I need to do is open a window which allows me to create the expression on the left in a WYSIWYG format. To produce the corresponding statement in $latex \LaTeX$ on the right I typed in $\displaystyle\int_{0}^{3} x^{2}\cos{x} \, dx$. Not as intuitive, but like any language, once you know the vocabulary and the syntax it is not that difficult. Most of the commands start with the symbol '\' and are relatively easy to learn after awhile. Arguments are generally put inside the { } braces.

I really am just scratching the surface at the moment, I know. I can insert graphics, make tables, and type text and mathematics. I have yet to learn how to create graphics or a host of other things that can be done with $latex \LaTeX$, but I am enjoying learning it. If you are interested, the following resources might be helpful:

MikTeX: There are many different packages for using $latex \LaTeX$ on all of the different systems out there. This is the one I use on my Windows Vista machine. It installs all of the commonly used packages, and it even has a handy .pdf document with clickable links for each step of the process. If you are not interested in installing $latex \LaTeX$ by hand, so to speak, and you have Windows, then this installation is for you.

A Short Intro to LaTeX: This is few webpages written by a guy at UC Irvine for starting the $latex \LaTeX$ process. Nice intro if you want to get a feel for how it works.

Art of Problem Solving Wiki: First of all, if you are a middle or high school math teacher and you have not heard about this site yet, go there immediately. It is a vibrant community of teachers and students all talking about solving problems. Amazing. They even have their own textbooks – my school uses their Intro to Algebra and Intro to Geometry books for some classes. But I digress. They also have a nice short intro to $latex \LaTeX$. This was my first intro and whetted my appetite for more.

Getting Started with LaTeX: This is a little more detailed site neatly organized by category and topic. Nice place to go for more detailed answers.

University of Cambridge: The Dept. of Engineering site has a nice collection of links for a wide variety of $latex \LaTeX$ topics. This site is worth going to once you start using it and need to find how to do specific things.

Harvard University: Their math department has an introduction and collection of links here. I have not used this one as much, but hey, it's Harvard – it must be pretty good!

LaTeX Project: A site for all news about $latex \LaTeX$, including the long promised third generation. It has links for finding different packages of the software.

Books: There are two books that I have found very helpful in my odyssey to learn this. The first is A Guide to $latex \LaTeX$ by Kopka & Daly. The second is Math Into $latex \LaTeX$ by Gratzer. Both of the editions I have are the third, but I think that the fourth may be available in one or both. For those who still like to feel a reference book in their hands, I highly recommend both of these. Without them I would never have completed typing up my Calculus problems.

I now type up many of my assignments and nearly all my tests using $latex \LaTeX$ and you can find different packages around the web for different situations. The package for tests was one such package. Incidentally, the whole reason for my post today was because I found out that WordPress accommodates $latex \LaTeX$ so I could not wait to try it out.

Is it for everyone? Definitely not. But if you are like me, and you like to peel back the layers of what your computer is doing, and you have a slightly (or more!) anal retentive personality when it comes to how the math you type looks, then I recommend taking a look.

Amway Critic and Supporter Tex has a new post up on his site titled, Tex Loses Some Quixtar/Amway Gl

Amway Critic and Supporter Tex has a new post up on his site titled, Tex Loses Some Quixtar/Amway Global Upline Support, in which he explains that his IBO City account was recently cancelled by his upline Amway Motivational Organization (AMO), InterNet Services. As David Robison points out, Tex's IBO City account was a "website replicating template site that provides IBOs with a series of website templates that can be customized with their own business name and "landing" page, so they may send potential IBOs to a website to introduce the recruit not only to Amway Global, but also, to the IBO's own identity."

Tex is a study in contrasts, as he is both a supporter and critic of the business. He hates whom he calls the Lying, Cowardly Kingpins (LCK) for running the tool scam yet he finds the tools to be useful and essential for building the business. He also feels that the Amway Global opportunity is a good one but has been sulied by the tool scam. Fixing the tool scam, then, should be the top priority for the corporation. Fix that, and everything would fall in place for future success.

I wonder how Tex's opinions would change if he were terminated by Amway Global itself for violating rule 2.9 in the Code of Conduct:

2.9. IBO in Good Standing. For the purposes of interpreting and enforcing the Quixtar Rules of Conduct only, the term “good standing,” when used in these Rules, shall refer to an IBO whose conduct does not negatively affect the reputation of Quixtar Inc., its related businesses, or IBOs affiliated with Quixtar and its related entities. This Rule shall not impact anything other than the Rules of conduct, including, but not limited to, Quixtar Business Incentive Programs (QBI).

Tex points to this rule as proof that he is actually on the side of Amway Global. By revealing the tool scam, he wants to show Amway that he's on their side. Unfortunately, Amway has devised its own way, accreditation, of dealing with kingpins. It remains to be seen whether or not accreditation will curb the excesses of the LCKs, but on paper it is at least a start.

So, my questions for today are:

What would happen to Tex were he terminated by the corporation?

Would he feel betrayed by Amway Global for siding once again with the LCKs?

Would he turn his back on the opportunity and become a full-fledged critic of the business?

Would he give up railing against the tool scam and do something else with his life?

I just installed TeX on my MacBook Pro, and boy is it a lot easier than installing it on a server a decade ago. Just download MacTeX-2008 from TUG and you're basically done. MacTeX installs a nifty little System Preferences pane that allows you to have different versions or distributions of TeX installed and switch between them with a mouse-click. It even sets your
PATH
and
MANPATH
variables automagically using the
/etc/paths.d
directory facility in Leopard. In my case that didn't work because I have a custom
.tcshrc
, but the "What Is Installed" document in /Applications/TeX/Utilities/Documents explained exactly what they are doing so it was easy to update my path.

It's good to be using TeX again, though I'm still learning the new stuff. I'm doing
latex
,
latex
,
bibtex
,
latex
,
dvipdf
, but I think the new way would be to use
pdflatex
. However, it seems to choke on the EPS file I have as part of the UH thesis example document.

# Kleines Makefile zum Erzeugen eines
# PDF-Dokumentes aus einer Latex-Datei.

NAME = slide
INPUT = $(NAME).tex
OUTPUT = $(NAME).pdf

$(OUTPUT): $(INPUT)
        pdflatex $(INPUT)
        evince $(OUTPUT)

Speculation: XS Gold Runs End Around Nutrilite?

XS Gold seems to be a very popular subject to talk about these days. This site hit an all-time high

XS Gold seems to be a very popular subject to talk about these days. This site hit an all-time high yesterday for visits, with the majority of hits coming from web engine searches for information on XS Gold.

What happens if you grind up some Nutrilite vitamins and dissolve them in a glass of water? From a nutritional standpoint, would that be just as good as swallowing the vitamin? Could you call that product, More Perfect Water?

How about XS Gold?

Tex posted additional information about the upcoming product on one his site:

It is a combination of several types of drinks, has all kinds of vitamins, minerals, adaptogenic herbs, plus various fruit components, including acai mangosteen, blueberry, pomegranate, red grape, and blackberry. Plus, an ingredient called essentra, which can be found at http://www.nutragenesisnutrition.com/essentra.php.com The cost is $27.60 per 12 pack, retail $36/12 pack.

This is in line with everything that I've read so far on the topic. It looks like some super-charged, vitamin-filled, MonaVie/Xango-busting concoction in a convenient 8 oz can. Even without seeing the labels to know the exact vitamin and nutritional count, I have the following question:

Can XS Gold be classified as a competitor, replacement, or supplement to Amway's own Nutrilite vitamins?

IBOFightBack has stated numerous times that Amway's top two brands are Artistry and Nutrilite. I wonder how XS Gold is going to be positioned from a marketing perspective by All In Energy... err... WWDB ... correction... Greg Duncan... oops... XS Energy.

This is all speculation on my part, but I can imagine the marketing for XS Gold going something like this:

"Vitamins on-the-do in a convenient can that you've come to know and love from the makers of XS Energy!"

or

"XS Gold is like liquid vitamins for your busy and hectic lifestyle. All the daily vitamins and minerals that you need are right there in one convenient can. Say goodbye to the days when you forget to bring your vitamin container with you to work."

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. If what I'm saying is true, can you say contradiction and competition? If given the choice between purchasing a month's supply of XS Gold (one case of 24 cans) versus a month's worth of Double X (one box), which would Triple Diamond Greg Duncan recommend?

What if one day, XS Energy and Duncan decide that their business is bigger and has more profit potential on its own than being aligned with Amway?1 What if they decide that they could create a better compensation plan for its members to sell XS Energy and XS Gold instead of Nutrilite vitamins? I can certainly imagine something like this playing out, can you?

After all, look at the Supreme TEAM Leader Orrin Woodward. When he left Amway last year, he had nothing more than his 60,000 member strong TEAM tool business. He had to search "long and hard" to find the "right" MLM opportunity for his group. MonaVie isn't quite the WalMart of the Internet Woodward promised to his TEAM followers, but what's the difference between $3 juice versus $40 juice among friends?

Greg Duncan is in a better position than Woodward. He has both, his tool business with WWDB and now an expanded product business with XS Energy, XS Gold and All In Energy.

What dream is Greg Duncan selling? Amway or his own business?2

Think about it.

1 That is, of course, if Duncan doesn't get Amway to purchase XS Energy outright and rebrand XS as Nutrilite Liquid.

2 This is America, and Greg Duncan can do whatever he wants with his business. From all accounts, he's a shrewd businessman. I'm not writing this blog for him but for those IBOs who might find themselves in an untenable position within this business opportunity.

Spada e scudo in pugno, mi invita a combattere. Sempre e comunque. Qualsiasi cosa accada. Fino alla fine.

È mezzodì. Rintomba.
Tacciono le cicale
nelle stridule seccie.
E chiaro un tuon rimbomba
dopo uno stanco, uguale,
rotolare di breccie.
Rondini ad ali aperte
fanno echeggiar la loggia
de' lor piccoli scoppi.
Già, dopo l'afa inerte,
fanno rumor di pioggia
le fogline dei pioppi.
Un tuon sgretola l'aria.
Sembra venuto sera.
Picchia ogni anta su l'anta.
Serrano. Solitaria
s'ode una capinera,
là, che canta . . . che canta . . .
E l'acqua cade, a grosse
goccie, poi giù a torrenti,
sopra i fumidi campi.
S'è sfatto il cielo: a scosse
v'entrano urlando i venti
e vi sbisciano i lampi.
Cresce in un gran sussulto
l'acqua, dopo ogni rotto
schianto ch'aspro diroccia;
mentre, col suo singulto
trepido, passa sotto
l'acquazzone una chioccia.
Appena tace il tuono,
che quando al fin già pare,
fa tremare ogni vetro,
tra il vento e l'acqua, buono,
s'ode quel croccolare
co' suoi pigolìi dietro.

I've been hoping to do up the MECH2210 orbital mechanics project in TeX, but first I had to work out how to do those special planet symbols. I tracked them down in a LaTeX symbol list (pdf) (page 68), in a package called mathabx. There's also astronomy symbols in the wasysym and marvosym packages, which are included in texlive-fonts-recommended from the Ubuntu repositories, but their Earth and/or Sun symbols weren't consistent with what we used in lectures.

The mathabx font isn't included in any software repositories that I could see, so I downloaded it from the ctan.org catalogue and unzipped to my desktop. Installing it was a tad tricky, I worked from the README and a post in the Ubuntu forums.

$ cd /home/jack/Desktop/mathabx/

$ sudo cp texinputs/mathabx.* $TEXMF/tex/generic/misc/

$ cd $TEXMF
$ sudo mktexlsr
