Boys Like Girls

The band began in 2003, when frontman Martin Johnson and drummer John Keefe (then both in other bands) crossed paths. Their bands played a few shows together, while the pair formed a strong bond, both musically and as friends. Johnson and Keefe soon came together with bassist Bryan Donahue and the three quit their day jobs to commit to the band full time. They soon brought in Paul DiGiovanni to play guitar, decided on the name "Boys Like Girls," and shot to almost instant fame.

With the help of the internet, Boys Like Girls has become a household name nearly overnight. The band attributes much of their fame to sites like purevolume, myspace and absolutepunk. Almost immediately after posting their first demos online, Boys Like Girls were at the top of purevolume unsigned band charts. "The Internet was huge for us," Martin admits. "It lets the fans--not the industry folk--decide who gets attention!"

Boys Like Girls make their lyrics easy to relate to, and each Boys Like Girls song tells a story. "My songs are my diary," Martin Johnson says. "Rather than keeping a journal, I write music. Every song is taken from a real life experience. Our album is basically a run-through of my life from ages 18-21, my relationships, what it was like being thrown out into the real world and leaving my hometown comfort zone, losing my mother. It's a commentary on life and my own personality."
