Ancora problemi con questo benedetto bug degli accenti ...
In parole povere: bisogna, almeno fino alla prossima bugfix release, evitare accuratamente le lettere accentate; in caso contrario, pubblicando il draft, WordPress va 'in confusione' :
"Communication Error - Operation could not be completed. (NSXMLParserErrorDomain error 9.)"

While many consumers of data on cellular networks are having fun with 3G, others are looking forward to the next big thing, 4G.

Two different standards are battling it out for the one that gets adopted, LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and WiMAX.

AT&T has asked the FCC to deny requests by Sprint and Clearwire radio spectrum licenses.

Guess which one AT&T is backing.

AT&T's request will not impact the upcoming WiMAX launch in Baltimore, but if the licenses are not granted there cannot be a nationwide deployment of WiMAX.

The problem that AT&T has with the deal is that, according to their filing, Sprint and Clearwire are attempting to avoid the FCC's normal review process by minimizing the current spectrum holdings each has. AT&T says that Sprint and Clearwire's application was "fatally defective" and should be dismissed.

Sprint and Clearwire, on the other hand, maintain that they have "exhaustively documented all of their spectrum holdings, including a county-by-county breakout and described the myriad public interest benefits of the transaction."

TechCrunch originally reported earlier this week the Google is in the final steps of acquiring the beloved social news site Digg.com. Digg.com was founded by Kevin Rose and now has upward of 26 million unique views every month. In spring there was also a rumor that Google was buying Digg, but the CEO of Digg immediately wrote a blog post discrediting the rumor, there has been no such blog post this time around. The rumored price for Digg.com is 200$ million, it’s not known if that is cash or stock or both. The deal if it exists should close within the next couple of weeks to a month. While it’s always sad to see an independent success such as Digg consumed by the 800 pound gorilla like Google, this will give them the power they need to fight the Digg copy cat, Yahoo Buzz. Better Google than Microsoft, which at one time was rumored to be considering a shot at Digg.

In the last few weeks it has been revealed that Microsoft along with billionaire investor Carl Icahn are trying to again take over Yahoo, again, actually its like the third or forth time. But they are going about it a different way, this time around the deal goes something like this: Microsoft will buy the search part of yahoo for 31$ dollars a share, the rest will be given to Icahn, he will not own it; instead he will be put in charge of finding some other company to buy it. Some companies that are reportedly being considered as buyers are News Corp and Time Warner. The later of the two is still trying to sell off AOL, there was, for a time, a rumor that AOL would be packaged with part of Yahoo and sold to Microsoft or another company. Then Time Warner (which owns AOL) realized that no one wants to be seen anywhere AOL’s ISP business, and Time Warner wants to keep AOL’s web properties which include Engadget and Web Blog’s Inc. Then to make the story even crazier Carl Icahn -the one pushing to overthrow the Yahoo board of directors and Yahoo’s CEO and founder Jerry Yang- accepted a position on Yahoo’s board, so while serving on the Yahoo board he’s still pushing fellow stock holders to vote for its removal at the end of the summer. Yahoo’s stock holders meanwhile have made it clear to Microsoft that they will not sell for 31$ a share, but they will sell for 33$. At the same time Microsoft has made it clear that they are not willing to change the price they are offering, 31$. Does anyone else get the feeling that neither of these companies have ever done this before? Doesn’t it feel like a super awkward first date? You’d think that they would just hire some pros who would stop leaking stuff to the press, and who knew how to keep their companies image from crashing while in merger talks.

Yes, today I start a new day! A day without Windows in my house! We're talking about Microsoft Windows of course. It's gone, kaput, bye-bye, so long, see ya, peace out!

I had one Windows PC left in the house. Our laptop runs Ubuntu and of course we have an iMac. But as far as the PC goes, I bought Cakewalk Sonar years ago and then kept upgrading over the years and I just didn't want to go through the expense of switching my music computer to Mac and buying all my software over again. However, this week my audio interface took a dump, and then as I was doing some work on my Windows box, my RAID controller farted and I lost my disk array. And that was it. I'd had it. So rather than spend more money to fix my aging PC, I decided to retire it and just go completely Mac.

Of course I still have Windows running in a virtual machine on my Mac. But I only use it to run MS Money, and now to restore and convert my old Sonar files from backup.

I feel better already.

According to developers poking around with the new firmware 2.1 Apple released yesterday, some new entries have been found in the iPhone WebKit framework that points to several commands not currently supported by the iPhone: cutting, copying and pasting.

The entries, in case you're curious, were found in Localizable.strings under English.lproj.

The lack of cut, copy and paste features in the iPhone has been a bit complaint by many users...hopefully that wil. be changing soon.

This morning, I was awoken to the sweet sounds of The Blow's "Parenthesis" (my ringtone for when my girlfriend calls). I got dressed, and then we were off to Orlando International Airport. Just as I was getting ready, I showed Ashley how to set up her own station on my account.

Since I was the one driving, I was in charge of the music, so the entire way, Pandora was on the dial in the car. After getting into Orlando, I switched on 3G since, according to AT&T it is there. I enjoyed the "Blazing the F*ck Fast" speeds fo the 3G (sorry, iPhone 3G camping joke) while I could. I left 3G on all the way home, and was happy to see that the 3G network is actually really close to near where I live, so I guess we'll be getting it here sooner that I would have expected.

Over the transition from 3G back to EDGE, it felt almost seemless, exept for the buffer times between the tracks. Naturally, my signal dropped out eventually and it wouldn't play the song without cutting in and out.

I'm surprised that this week is just about over. Have any of you taken up the challenge? Share your feelings in the comments.

After what seems like forever, the merger of satellite radio providers Sirius and XM has finally been approved by the last group that needed to bless it--the FCC.

By a vote of 3 to 2, the FCC agreed to the merger after Sirius and XM agreed to pay a $19.7 million fine for violating FCC regulations for the and-based signal repeaters the companies use to operate.

Looks like all the lobbying by land-based radio companies against the merger didn't make enough of a difference.

Both companies have promised that within three months of the deal they would allow listeners to pay only for the channels they want.

On July 16th software maker SAP announced that their Standard Support is being replaced by Enterprise Support, increasing the cost to Standard Support customers.

As you might expect, the move isn't exactly popular and the SAP U.K. & Ireland Users Group and Germany's DSAG are starting to make some noise about it.

Alan Bowling, the group's chairman, says "the mandatory nature of this change along with the increase in cost has received hugely negative feedback from our membership to date."

Pricing of the contract will increase from 17% to 22% of the contract value. New customers will get the new pricing beginning immediately, while existing customers will have the increase in phases. The SAP U.K. & Ireland Users Group says that over the next four years this will result in a 29.4% increase.

Bowling says that he'd "encourage all organizations impacted by these changes to examine the potential value of the offering and to contact SAP to provide their feedback on this price increase." He would also like to "encourage SAP to reconsider this mandatory price rise so that organizations not requiring the extra level of support provided in Enterprise Support do not have to pay for feature they do not require."

Evidence across the web proves that Gears is spreading through the web application community like wildfire. Although the software isn't exactly new (it was released June 6th of this year), recent improvements to the project have increased its popularity. Google employs it in its apps, namely Gmail, Docs, and Picasa, all for use offline. Myspace and Zoho have also utilized the tool for similar purposes. Plus, new Rails frameworks and Greasemonkey scripts allow its usability to spread even further.

Remember the Milk, a popular task list application, is a good example of how Gears works. Upon logging into the service, a box pops up asking permission to install Gears. It takes only a second and does not require restarting your browser. Then it allows you (if you wish) to add desktop, start menu, and taskbar icons.

The final result is the ability to work offline and synchronize your tasks later online if you wish. RTM has added an inconspicuous little button at the top menu which you can click to switch between modes.

While this all may not seem like anything spectacular, it is the concept that counts. At the birth of the Internet, there was an explosion of excitement and productivity. While we have nowhere near reached the pre-Internet levels of productivity, it has waned drastically from its conception, largely due to communication timesucks and "too much convenience", i.e. overusing the web and forgetting about the real life goals it was intended to solve. The recent vision has been to integrate the Internet seamlessly into our lives--to make it so that you hardly even notice it, as it reminds, informs, and communicates for you. Gears slings web applications to your desktop and away from the trap of the Internet, where your time can be easily lost. Along with other projects under development by Google and others, these programs will start working more intuitively, launching automatically at preset times, a preditermined action, or at a keystroke, from our computers, televisions, or phones.

It is time to upgrade the 17" Mac Book Pro laptop. It has served us well, but now it needs more. More memory and thanks to Channel Flip I will be purchasing the Corsair which I found here. I found it very economical and should be a valuable upgrade.

The next step is to upgrade the 120Gig hard drive to a 320Gig hard drive. I am thinking of getting this drive but am unsure of the exact specs for the Mac Book Pro. I am looking for a drive that is as quiet as the drive we have now, but provides much more capacity. I read the Samsung drives are loud but the Western Digital drives are quieter. Any thoughts?

When it comes to gender-specific marketing (see: pink Diet Coke bottles) my reaction is usually "Don't get me started..." - fortunately for all of you here in the virtual world, I can get started without worrying about killing the conversation. To wit, Flock's new "Gloss Edition" browser. Can you tell who they are aiming for?

It's pink! How darling! Barf. And it gets worse from there:

THE FLOCK BROWSER: GLOSS EDITION
You Deserve It. Indulge Yourself.

What is it, a freaking chocolate bar? The gooey condescension continues, essentially saying, "We know all you girls want to look at on the internet is, like, clothes and stuff. And OMG, don't you just looove SATC? All women love SATC!"

If you don’t use the Flock Gloss Edition Browser, you're probably out of touch with the latest dish. You should treat yourself better. Go on and try it on for size.

What fucks me off about this (amongst many, many things) is that it's perpetuating some 1998 idea that women have no place on the internet unless they're shopping for clothes, when the fact is that females (particularly younger girls) more often than not outnumber their male counterparts when it comes to embracing online technology.

Look, I like pink - in roses, one of my winter coats, one of my sheet sets and a few of my make-up items. But do I want everything I do to be pink? And do I need to be told about hot dresses and amazing gossip while I'm trying to read newspapers and do research online? Hell no.

The Gloss browser probably brings up a 500 error if you try to search for anything other than "Manolo Blahnik +sale".

New 'Series 9' Samsung LN55A950 official on Samsung.com!!

[caption id="attachment_887" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Samsung.com showing LN55A950"][/caption]

Well looks like the info leakage from the IFA samsung show in Berlin was pretty accurate, even translated poorly by the webs translation services, the proposed specs in my last post about the Samsung LN55A950 seems to be verified by the appearance of similar information found on the Samsung North American websites. The LN55A950 looks to hit near the end of the summer with an estimated MSRP around $4199.99.

2 million to 1 contrast ratio?!?!

I previously posted about a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio in my last Samsung LN55A950 / LN46A950 info leakage post, however looks better then expected as the official samsung page is saying 2,000,000:1 woo! Other key features are the LED smart backlighting, new TOC designs, Ultra Clear panels, 120hz auto motion plus and the new DNIe pro video processing technology, and pre loaded content libraries where you can access cool digital content such as fitness excercises, games, photos, cooking recipes and more!

WARNING: the following blog contains explicit tech talk and anyone not interested in geeky web 2.0 conversations (read: my wife) might just skip this edition of life, and a little more.

Try as I might, I just can not consolidate my online life into just one place. I'm spread out all over the place. Check out the sidebar to the right to see most of my online communities!

More and more I'm using this Wordpress blog as my central web location, with all the aforementioned websites pointing here. There have been some useful tools that let the Web 2.0 crowd interact with one another. I've been using Facebook's Twitter application to update my Facebook status from Twitter (as I can't access Facebook at work, but can access Twitter). I've been looking for something similar for Myspace. Can't access that website from work either! What, my bosses actually want me to work?

So I finally stumbled upon hellotxt.com. It is a pretty useful tool if you are spread out all over the web like me.

To the right you can see all of the Web 2.0 services that Hellotxt works with. Truthfully I hadn't even heard of most 'em!

Once you enter all of your information for all of your accounts you are presented with a text box to input your updates into. I haven't played with the picture or video feature, but it is nice to know that it is there if you need it.

Type in your update and it automatically sends it to the services you have selected.

Another nice feature of Hellotxt.com is the Social Time Line. You can view all of your friends updates right in the Hellotxt framework. Everything is centralized! Facebook is not supported yet, but according to the website, it is coming soon.

Of course, Hellotxt wouldn't be complete without the ability to send in updates via text messaging from your cell phone. I only have a work cell with no ability to text, so I won't be using this service.

All in all, hellotxt.com will be helping me out a lot. I'm just glad I can consolidate a little bit!

Today on the Official GMail Blog, they announced that now gmail users have the capability to force https for gmail logins. Here's how you do it.

All you need to is login to your GMail account and then click "Settings". Then at the very bottom you'll see a heading labeled "Browser Connections" and from there you'll see your options to either "Always use https" or "Don't always use https". I think we all know which one is safer to use.

While it is true that using https for GMail might slow things down a bit, I don't think it will make a difference that most users will notice in the slightest.

For more info, check the Official GMail Blog! :)

Yahoo has announced that beginning on October 1st of this year they will no longer be delivering DRM keys to music purchased from their Yahoo Music online music service.

If you have already authorized songs from the service you'll still be able to play them locally, but you won't be able to do anything else with them--no copying them to a portable player, burning them to CD, etc.
