Tattoos of Native American designs is one of the most popular.

Oriental designs are also quite popular.

Celtic designs often appear in tattoos on a Womans Lower Back & Around a Mans Muscle.

To many people, tattoos are exotic and daring things to get into. It's such a huge decision as the design, whatever it may be, will be permanent. Not only might this seem daunting but the actual process of getting a tattoo can be frightening to those who have never experienced it.

When European travelers returned from Polynesia to Europe they brought with them stories of fabulous

When European travelers returned from Polynesia to Europe they brought with them stories of fabulous skin art & images that had been drawn to show how they appeared. A number of these travelers were even bearing a few of these tattoos, people became more and more fascinated with the concept. The sailors particularly were keen to experiment with this new art form.

The crewman and other westerners who visited Polynesia came across natives who were skilled in producing tattoos and they willing participants. That was till the colonizing missionary's determined it was sinful and archaic and tried to stop them form practicing the art of tattoo.

They simply succeeded in driving it underground and not getting rid of it. As the Europeans upheld the
practice of the art.

There were technical boosts in conception, colour and machines, that led to tattooing getting more
prevalent in the U.S. acquiring a uniquely all American feel. In 1846 in New York City the 1st tattoo workshop was considered to have been set up by Martin Hildebrandt. Where he commenced the custom of inking soldiers both union and rebel, in addition to sailors who acquired tattoos representing struggles or important events. King Edward VII was the 1st to initiate the rage amongst his peers in England when he got a tattoo prior to ascending the throne.

It appears our idea of the Polynesians as being to a greater extent more primitive then the Europeans and Americans was fairly skewed since they used the artistic creation of tattoos to personify things like allegiance and devotion or to commemorate an epic conflict or merely to create a beautiful piece of abiding art. Which is what the Americans and Europeans did also.

With the beginning of WWII, during the 1940's, the climate of the nation was intensely patriotoic. This produced a bonanza for the tattoo artisans, as increasingly people desired a way to represent there feelings for there country more vividly, then at any other time. Soldiers and sailors constituted the bulk of clients who visited the tattoo parlours that appeared to have sprung up everywhere and by the 1950's the tattoo
industry was a recognized component of Western culture whilst at the same time remaining on the outskirts of society.

Since we have embarked into the twenty-first century tattooing has gotten to be a legitimate kind of fine art, which attracts both women and men, nevertheless there are some folks in every generation who are personally against putting permanent marks on their bodies, but for the people who choose to
get inked the alternatives for style and colour and position on the body is entirely bounded by the vision of the individual and the artist.

So, I finally got it done. No, not the assassination of Steve Jobs - my new tattoo!
Yes, after much

So, I finally got it done. No, not the assassination of Steve Jobs - my new tattoo!

Yes, after much debating, studying pictures, and drawing on my limbs with various types of pen, I decided on a tattoo I liked, and wanted to get done. I knew after much consideration, that I didn't want something 'geeky' done this time. I already had my Warhammer 40,000 Aquila tattoo, and felt that my second foray into the world of body art should be something a little more universal. Or at least should show some other side of my personality (for all those fans of my other tattoo ideas, fear not, they will be done, just at a later date). Getting a picture of Noel Fielding inked on me was out of the question, since I have enough people questioning my sexuality as it is, without adding fuel to the flames.

So, I looked to my more literary side, thinking that maybe some clecer quote would be good. And my choice was prompted by an argument with my graceless neanderthal sister, in which I quoted at her the excellent Oscar Wilde "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars", in response to her claims that even though I behave as if I'm better than her, we were born in the same place, and live in the same place.

This quote, to me, sums up the drive within people to be better than they are. The urge to reach further, achieve more, and generally be better than you were to begin with. Whether or not this is what the esteemed Mr Wilde intended or not, that's what it says to me, and so, since I often believe myself to be trying to better myself, I feel it's perfect. It also serves as a reminder to me whan I'm about to do something base or low, that I'm supposed to be above such acts. Don't know if it'll work, but it looks good anyway!

Tat is of course short for tattoo, and the truth is, I do fear them. The neck tattoo is, to me, wha

Tat is of course short for tattoo, and the truth is, I do fear them. The neck tattoo is, to me, what shaggy hair and elephant bells and leather jackets were to our parents: A sign of both danger and decay. Show me a neck tattoo, and I'll show you a pregnant 15-year-old who drinks Pepsi for breakfast and lives in a trailer with plumbing that drains into a wading pool.

Of course, I could show you a neck tattoo, and you might show me Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice aka Mrs. David Beckham. Or Eva Longoria, aka the Desperate Housewife who would never really live in the suburbs. Or Angelina Jolie or Ben Affleck or Amy Winehouse (there's a role model) or just about any contestant on any reality show, tattoos, neck or otherwise, seeming to be a prerequisite for crossing the Hollywood town line.

Why would anyone get a tattoo? That's a very good question. In fact, let's do a Q and A on the subject with a noted authority, me:

Why would anyone get a tattoo?

The young get tattoos for the sole purpose of setting themselves apart from the old. "I'm nothing like you," the tattoo signals, "and I want to make sure the entire world knows it, so I'm going to etch this large dark blue and red symbol on my neck. Just so there's never any confusion. And I mean never, ever, ever."

Exactly! That's the problem with tattoos: They're so permanent! Why would anyone want to mark their body with a symbol of something or someone ("Billy Bob") they might not care about in two decades or even two months?

The young believe that who and what they are now, they will stay forever, and the tattoo is evidence of a superstitious belief that making a permanent mark will create a permanent condition. Or at least that's what studies show.

What's with the Asian symbol thing? Why would a kid who's not Asian, has no desire to travel through Thailand or Mongolia, and can barely write and read English choose to put a Chinese character on his shoulder or forearm?

As with so much else, it's Angelina's fault. Right, Jen?

Won't having a tattoo make it hard to get a good job? Look terrible if you want to wear a strapless wedding gown? Be difficult and painful to remove if you change your mind when you're 35?

Yes! That's what I keep telling them! But nobody listens!

But you're so intelligent! So right! Why won't they listen?

Because they think I'm old and out of it and that I don't know what I'm talking about and that they're never going to feel the way I feel or be the way I am. And my only consolation is knowing for sure what a 50-year-old butt looks like, and why a fat red rose would not add anything to the picture.

What to do if confronted with a young tattooed person? "Don't try to look "kewl" and "hip" by asking said kid where they "got their ink done" or comment on their "nice tats". Eew," says Denise Garratt, aka The Internet Research Geek. "Just stop staring, take your book or coffee and walk quickly and quietly to your Volvo and don't look back."

Well here we are again, to discuss if and when mom gets her first tattoo. There have been lots of opinions expressed, I have 3 kids and hubby so right away you know that there are at least 4 opinions, on where it should be. Then my friends at work saying I had to wait till i went on vacation so i could leave it uncovered by clothes.. We started the process by saying , arms or legs, for arms the choices armbands, tribal armbands, forearms or inside arms, and then for legs back and sides of calf. or ankle tattoos, I really did not want to have one on my foot because i have heard it could be quite painful that close to the bones. same thing for the ankle tattoo. My friend also told me that an armband tribal tattoo can be very painful on the inside of the arm and I am kind of a chicken. Well I will let you know if and when I decide

It communicates self expression and in the past few years through the power of television, is more popular and more lucrative now than ever before.

It's tattooing, and it has allowed it's artists to go from being backroom Picassos to MTV celebrities.

But is this art form for you, the Christian Visual artist?

Yesterday, I spent a couple hours sitting in the Mormon Handicraft room on the second floor of the Deseret Bookstore. It was 98 degrees, and my husband and son and I had just come from the Farmer's Market in Salt Lake City. It was nice to be inside after our long stroll through the park. I felt a little uncomfortable at first, as I climbed the stairs, realizing that I had come here alone and feeling a bit nervous about conversing with a handful of strangers after becoming something less than a social butterfly from my two years of being a stay-at-home-mom. Still, sitting at a 8ft plastic table, in a matching plastic chair, surrounded by neat rows of coordinating fabric and fascinating women, I learned to tat.

This was my second class. I originally had been invited by my mother-in-law to attend with her step-mom, friend and herself. My husband graciously offered to watch our son while I was gone. This time I was dropped off at the store on Fort Union Blvd. and proceeded alone.

As soon as I sat down, I was relieved to see a new face and someone who was (I assume) close to my age. I didn't feel quite so alone anymore. She took notes and I listened to how the teacher, Heidi Sugden, helped her to position the shuttle in her hands, wrap the thread around and make the first double stitch. That was me last month, learning how to take my first steps in tatting.

I was now anxiously awaiting my turn for instructions. All month long, I had been dieing to know the next steps to take so I could start a new project. When she got to me, Heidi patiently helped me through the process to join my stitches and start my first project...a small doily. I was elated, to say the least. I had learned a new skill. I had learned something that I could teach my grandma and not the other way around. I was proud!

So, all last night I stayed up and finished my first doily and started on my own pattern (that I found online, of course) to make a bookmark. I'm still working on it now, but I will post pictures as soon as I'm done. I can't wait till the next class where we will be starting on snowflakes. If you are interested in joining the class, it will be held at 1-3pm on July 19th and August 9th at the Deseret Bookstore in Midvale: 1110 E. Fort Union Blvd. The best part is, it's free of charge and all you have to do is call (801) 561-8777 to register (they will transfer you to the Handicraft room).

Hope to see ya there!

I'm not writing the regular blog this time around. This is a challenge.

Here at the office it's custom to try and find a tacky gift to bring back after going on holiday. The idea is that you try and bring back the worst piece of tat that you can possibly find with the country name on it.

Just to give an idea of that kind of rubbish we've found here are two examples that we found in Greece and Sweden respectively.

[gallery]

I'm sure you'll agree, these are terrible things that no sane person would ever buy. Right? Well we have, and consider it quite a challenge to beat whatever was bought before.

If you can get your hands on anything worse than let us know. Even if you don't buy something, a photo might well do, let's see what we can find!

The other day I was treating one of my patients for chronic hip and shoulder pain and while I was do

The other day I was treating one of my patients for chronic hip and shoulder pain and while I was doing so I asked how things were going in her life. After a few seconds she became visibly emotional and her eyes welled up with tears. "I'm so overwhelmed at work I don't know what to do," she said. She explained that because of her responsibilities as a business owner and administrator she often found herself faced with an apparently insurmountable workload that triggered in her an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and desperation. She realized that this pattern had been repeating itself for as long as she could remember and that her health and energy levels had gradually begun to deteriorate. "What am I going to do?" she asked. "I can't go on living like this. Can you help me?"...
A few years ago I began studying and applying in my practice a new cutting edge therapy called TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique). Developed by Tapas Fleming, L.AC. This relatively new treatment approach is a miraculous healing tool that combines lightly holding a few acupressure points on your head (the TAT pose) as you put your attention on a problem (the Steps of TAT). With TAT you can profoundly improve any aspect of your life by changing or rather dissolving your current point of view (of the problem). As you begin doing TAT, there is a sense of entering through a "Portal of Divine Grace" wherein your problem surrenders and dissolves in Divine Unconditional Love and Light. When you're done with the problem, you're done with it. It's not going to resurface at a later time for it no longer exists!
We proceeded to do TAT on her stated problem and after about 25 minutes all the negative emotions that she previously had related to were nowhere to be found. Her entire countenance had transformed from one of resigned despair to this bright exuberant being who seemed to have had the world lifted off her shoulders. Indeed it was a sight to behold. What was equally astounding (but not surprising) was that on her subsequent visits she reported that her workload had remained consistent and in some instances she had less time to do the work, yet she was totally undisturbed by this. She knew that her work would be done in a timely manner, except now she had a sense of confident composure. "I feel so at peace and present to my life," she said. "I don't know how to thank you for what you've done Joey." "You know who to thank," I said, as we looked each other in the eyes and smiled in acknowledgment.
Sharing this with you gives me the opportunity to shed light on amazing new therapies that are emerging. The greatest thing about TAT is that its so easy to understand and apply that almost anybody can do it. I recommend that you be trained and treated by a qualified TAT Professional until you become familiar and comfortable with the steps of TAT. In no time at all you'll be able to use TAT on yourself and begin to transform for the better any aspect of your life. To that end, know that the possibility to free yourselves from the shackles of fear and doubt exist, so that you may transform your life from mediocrity to greatness.

EFT, TAT, & EmoTrance - Three Great Techniques to Change Your Life

EFT
Gary Craig developed the Emotional Freedom Techniques after studying Thought Field Therapy (TFT)

EFT

Gary Craig developed the Emotional Freedom Techniques after studying Thought Field Therapy (TFT) with Roger Callahan. TFT utilized tapping on acupuncture points to “clear thought fields” that are causing disturbances.

Roger Callahan found that patients often had conflicting desires between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, and through tapping on acupuncture points while the patient focused on the issue he learned that the “thought field” could be cleared thus the subconscious would then be in agreement with the conscious mind.

Thought Field Therapy developed into a technique that applied algorithmic formulas of tapping on acupuncture points to an emotional issue. In my opinion, and it has been proven by others, the algorithms are nonsense. Gary Craig noticed that patients got better even when the “wrong” algorithm was used, thus he knew that there was no need for a sequence of acupuncture points.

Gary quickly developed EFT on the idea that it didn't matter what order you tapped on the acupuncture points but that you tapped on a variety of them. The results of EFT speak for themselves. It doesn't work for everyone and everything, neither does TFT, but it works a large majority of the time.

This is a great free technique that you can use to rid yourself of “emotional” causes. To download a free manual of EFT go here.

TAT

TAT stands for the Tapas Acupressure Technique developed by Tapas Fleming. The technique is often called a “cousin” of EFT, as there are many. However, the Tapas Acupressure Technique is significantly different in that you don't tap on a multitude of acupuncture points. Essentially you hold three acupuncture points at the inner canthus and middle of the eyebrow and the palm of the other hand on the occiput.

For some people this technique works amazingly well to rid themselves of the “emotional causes.” I personally haven't had much success with it but have watched others who have.

From an acupuncture meridian theory point of view, what is taking place is a balance between yin and yang of the head. There are reasons for this based on the acupuncture points being held but I won't go into that theory here. Suffice it to say, it helps the energy move through the brain and that facilitates the “breaking up” of emotional stagnation.

You can learn more about TAT here.

EmoTrance

EmoTrance is another “EFT cousin.” This is my favorite technique that a person can use by their self. It's a very simple idea of feeling the “energy” stagnation in your body when you think of an issue, and with intention facilitating it to move through the “energy systems” until it has cleared the body. You repeat this with every aspect of the memory/thought until you feel the energy flow freely with that idea in mind and you feel great about it. You can also do it on any event, environment, or anything that makes you “feel” anything and you can locate that feeling in your body.

The ideas of this technique are similar to body centered psychology and I'm not totally certain were Silvia Hartman got the idea for it. I've read the books and heard here story about how she stumbled upon the idea, but the basic idea of this technique is the same as The Sedona Method, The Release Technique, Body Centered Psychology, and basic acupuncture principles.

Unlike the first two methods described above, this one is not free to learn. However, it is as simple as what I've just described. The rest of the theories really don't hold a lot of watter.

You can check out EmoTrance more here.

Now go and change

If you apply any one of these three techniques in combination with something like affirmations or anything to help redirect your mind you will see great results. You simply have to be consistent and stay the course.

Good luck.

OK, to explain the title, it's what we used to say @ VMI when counting down to an event such as a dance, Christman/T-Giving/Spring furlough (for me getting paroled to see Wineymomma). Anyway, this time next week, I'll be packing my carry on and heading back to get her and the monsters. In the imortal words of Lil' Jon, "Yeah-ya!" Granted I'll only see them for 8 days, most of which will be dealing with movers and driving cross country (again) but we'll be together and that's what is important. Hope I don't wreck because I find it very difficult to take my eyes off of my bride. Anyway, not much to report today...standard Monday and at least didn't get called in over the weekend...potential op quelled itself (dang it!). Yesterday was good. Got out of church (excellent service with Mother's Day message given by Mrs. James (Rev. Dr. James' wife))---Spoke on characteristics of a Mother (Presense and Love, Romans 8:38-39; Forgiveness, Hebrews 8:12, and Discpline, Psalm 13:24), had some most excellent all-you-can-eat swine, yardbird, salad bar, mac-n-cheese, cornbread and BBQ baked beans at Sonny's BBQ (all for $7.99---rock on!), then just chilled, made some calls and did some reading. Didn't get to post this yesterday. This was on the cover of the yesterday's church bulletin...so to revisit Mom's Day one more time:

A Mothers Creed

I will worry less about my children and trust God more. I will commit them to the Lord's care. I will love my children unconditionally and let them know I do. I will believe in them constantly and encourage them often. I will pray for them daily. I will teach them responsibility for their own actions. I will try to be an example of godliness but will be unafraid to let them see my faults. I will give them generous doses of laughter, interspersed with fun. I will release them when they are grown but they will always be my own.

"Her children arise up , and call her blessed." Proverbs 31:28

Pretty much sums it up based on what I've seen from all the mom's in my life. So no gore or violence or tats or F-bombs today...remember, promised I was going to post at least two positive messages a week...other days, procede w/ caution! Be good to yourself!---TFD

PS---Sorry Mom, still getting a tat!

I got a new tat this evening. It's done by the same artist that has done all my other tats--Sam Wolf. He's working out of the Wholeshot Tattoo Parlor out in Berkley (MI) now.

It hurt. (Just like all the others). I didn't expect it not to. I guess some people are lucky and don't feel much pain with a tat. Before getting it done Chris asked if I was nervous--and I said yeah, cause I knew it would hurt. I called myself a wimp. Chris disagreed. He said a wimp wouldn't be getting it done.

It turned out great! Was under the needle for about 45 minutes or so. It's a tat of Bhrianna's name--where the first letter is an illuminated letter like what you'd find in the book of Kells.
