- Turkish delights heaven
I've spent my day reading delicious entries by food critiques, quite inspiring actually. And, amongst that I have been trying to decide upon where to dine on my birthday. Upon these thoughts I was thinking about just how much I miss French Polynesia... So many memories of fine cuisine. Quaint venues, sea side restaurants to die for, and cuisine to die for too.

I love the way that French culture in cuisine accommodates time for romance, quality and thought. In most authentic French restaurants you receive a basket of sliced French bread, it's really something small, but something to miss upon. Or the French term of "face to face" whilst dining. I think it really evokes the romance. Eye to eye, face to face, speak to speak, upon sharing slices of bread and then dining, one never forgets these dining moments.

I was thinking about all of that today whilst in search of a nice venue. I am thinking of either French cuisine or perhaps one of my old time favorites, Thai cuisine. Thai cuisine is so familiar to me, the taste, the smells, the presentation all remind me of memories. So, I am in search of a good venue. I came across a fantastic dining search system based in New Zealand which basically enables you to search for many good restaurant venues. I came across : Metropilis Caffe - Quite eclectic in cooking style. Palate - Very delightful. Glamz - A bit too nightclub, I'm not sure if you couldn't tell by the name, I'm not sure if I could persuade everyone. Thai village - Very "nice". Thai classical cuisine - Sounds very me. Cafe Alma - Very tasteful presentation.

I've decided upon either : Palate or Thai classical cuisine. But I shall see what happens. But on another note, something else came up. I got a bit side tracked and it turns out that the search function enables you to find delicious dining venues in Australia too. I found some really nice ones in Sydney. Read these. . .

Lotus pond - Very, very tempting. The dining room - exquisite. Zia pia Pizzeria - Zia me like. B&C cafe - Located near darling harbor, I'm thinking very nice.

I have got to say, Sydney really does seem to have some delicious venues. I can't wait to go and taste all of the delicious food. It's going to be, hate me for saying this, fabulous. Really. I like the names of the restaurants too, they're unique. Not only that, but China town is on my notes and the Sydney food markets are a must do on my list. Greek, Lebanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Italian, here I come. I heard that the Greek food in Sydney is superb, I don't doubt that ha ha. But everyone knows that Turkish is my all time favorite. Ah, FRESH Turkish delights, I'm really going to indulge over these. And... BAKLAVA! I've got some very serious gourmet plans. Turkish delights, Fresh delicious real Turkish delights. Also, Sydney has some good base cafe culture, so without a doubt coffee is going to be good on the list too.

In the afternoon of my birthday me and my sister are going to meet in the city and go for lunch, do a bit of a browse together at the mall. We're both really busy recently so it's nice to catch up. Maybe Thai food at Tuk Tuk. Another favorite. Coffee at Casabella lane. Got to go and check out red current as well. Take a browse at Palate. - Delicious right?

Anyway, all of this gourmet talk is making my taste buds flare. I've got some very nice, expensive salmon locks, bagels and cream cheese to attend to. And a delicious coffee to go with that. (Cinnamon sprinkled on the top).

Ciao~

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Travel note: Thanks a lot for the e-mails ! I was surprised to get so many responses in regard to my travel plans to Sydney, Australia. Some great suggestions too you guys! Thanks! I will most definitely go to the recommended venues and places to see. Really looking forward to it. The indulge. And thank you too for the early birthday greetings and e-mails, it was really nice.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Mission accomplished. I finally finished up the last article I was writing for a new magazine called Indigo that I recently signed a contract with. I emailed the copy to the editor.

"He better not edit it too much either," I said as I hit the send button.

I was about to take a nap when my phone rang, as it has a habit of doing as soon as I decide I want to close my eyes for 45 minutes to an hour. I looked at the phone and saw that it was Terry so my initial irritation immediately turned into joy, topped off with a pose for the camera smile.

"Hey beautiful, what you up to?" said Terry.

"Hey baby, I just finished up some work and I'm about to just relax for a while," I said.

"Oh okay, cool. So did you think about what I asked you the other night?" he asked.

"Of course I did. I can't stop thinking about it." I told him with excitement escaping from me that I didn't plan on showing.

"Sooo?" Terry asked.

I could tell he was smiling and I'm sure he knew I was grinning from ear to ear too.

"So, yes!" I said.

"Cool. I can finalize the plans today and get our tickets," he said.

"Terry, I can't believe you are taking me to Tahiti," I said "This is like a dream come true. I mean Terry, the car, the gifts. You've really been so good to me. I can't even begin to compete with you on that."

"Baby, we're not in competition. I'm doing these things for you because I love you and I want to spend all the time I can with you. Plus, we both need a vacation and I think we need to go on one," he said.

"Terry, all I can say is...I'm there and one question? When do we leave?"

We both laughed.

"Well, next Wednesday is our departure date so make sure you have all the sexy sundresses you want packed in your bag," he said.

"Next Wednesday?" I asked "Are you serious?"

"Yes, next Wednesday and I am very serious. You don't have any conflicts with that do you?" asked Terry.

"Honey, if I did, I don't now," I replied "I'm making room for my baby, spending time with my man."

"Look at you," he said "girl you gonna make me steal you away for 2 weeks, not just one."

"Terry, the trip is for a week? Aww, baby!" I screamed.

"Yes, I'm going to have you all to myself for 7 whole days. I love you Syrah. This is going to be the best vacation I ever had in my life. I already know it," said Terry.

"Aww, Terry I love you too sweetie and I know this is going to be the best vacation I've ever had," I said "You sure know how to make a girl feel loved."

"How about I make you feel loved tonight by taking you out to dinner?" he asked.

"You know what? How about I make you feel loved by cooking dinner for you?" I replied. "How's 7 o'clock?"

"Oh man! I am there and I can't wait," said Terry.

Terry and I talked for a few more minutes and we hung up. God, I love this man, I thought to myself as I closed my eyes to take in all the good news and think about what I was going to cook for dinner. Whatever I came up with was going to be good.

"I am going to Tahiti!" I said out loud and smiled.

I was beginning to learn Terry's love language. He is definitely one who shows his love and care by giving gifts. With him, he has to do something for you to make you smile, cause you to just be happy and erupt with joy. I loved that about him. He was not only a giving man but a man of his word. I could trust that he will do what he says he will. Truly his love for me was more than words.

A Tahiti vacation is something that you plan to go on when you are searching for a place that is extremely unique. It is a beautiful island region that has so much tradition and culture that by the time you leave you will feel like a Tahitian. It has been a popular travel destination for many years, but it still seems to be one of those places that holds on to its individual charm. It will never become a place that is flooded with tourists. Tahiti works hard to maintain these qualities so it is important that you respect their ways while on your Tahiti vacation. Most likely, you will find this to be a very easy thing to do because you will immediately find yourself immersed in the culture.

The islands that are known as Tahiti are situated in a part of the Pacific Ocean that many people refer to as the Polynesian Triangle. This area also encompasses Hawaii, Easter Island and New Zealand as well. Tahiti was almost completed unexplored at all until the 1500s when Europeans began sailing to the tropical shores. This exploration began much later in Tahiti then anywhere else which is why it has been able to hold on so strongly to its roots of culture and tradition. There was a war between the French and the British for the land and both were very territorial about who discovered and controlled the land in Tahiti. The Europeans remained very fascinated during all of this with the stories about Tahiti and its tropical beauty. They also maintained a wild interest in the exotic animals and plant life that inhabited the island. The disputes came to an end though when in 1957, all of the Tahitian islands were designated as French territory. This is when they were renamed French Polynesia.

Your Tahiti vacation is sure to be exciting and jam packed with so many things to do. Every island in this territory has its own unique sense of tradition and culture so it is a good idea to plan to spend a good amount of time on each of them. The waters are beautiful so if you are a swimmer then you definitely want to schedule some time to scuba dive where you can explore the ocean life up close in a safe environment. Regardless of your interests and skill levels, a Tahiti vacation is surely something that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Last March The Getty Center announced the purchase of a rarely seen Post-Impressionist painting, Paul Gauguin's Arii Matamoe. Gauguin painted the work in 1892, a year after traveling to his beloved Tahiti. The subject of the painting, which depicts the severed head of a Polynesian man laid out for ceremonial mourning, has generated a great deal of scholarly ink regarding its indeterminate meaning.

Scott Allan, assistant curator in the Department of Paintings at the Getty, recently lectured on the ambiguities facing interpretation, exploring multiple threads of art historical context behind the work's dramatic appeal. Beginning with a literal translation of the title, "Royal Death", Allan posits that the severed head could symbolize the end of royal hegemony and traditional Polynesian culture after the last king of Tahiti passed away in 1891. Allan follows with an artist-centric hypothesis, exploring Gauguin's fascination with martyrdom, particularly his own. Showing images of Gauguin's various ceramic drinking mugs cast out of his own profile with blood colored glaze laced around the artist's "neck", Allan provides an intriguing connection of artist to subject .

Whether Gauguin thought more of himself or the death of man's native self in the face of colonization and technology will always remain conjecture. But what Allan did prove beautifully, if latently, through this special new acquisition was that the most satisfying search for meaning within subject matter takes a holistic approach, accounting for both artist biography and historical context.

One day, when I get around to finishing my book, “1001 Reasons to Drink Rum” you’ll see that Reason #48 is the Mai Tai.

I mean, perhaps I’ll even move it up a bit in the ranking because this drink is really, really good.

The legend of this drink is that its inventor (Victor J. Bergeron, of Trader Vics fame) mixed this drink up as a special for a visitor from Tahiti back in 1944. When his Tahitian friend tasted it, he said “Maita’i roa!” - which means “Out of this World!”

Thus was born the Mai Tai.

Hey, I don’t know if that’s true or not, but the drink really is Out of this World. And that qualifies it to be todays Friday 5 o’Clock Cocktail.

Here’s how to make a Mai Tai:

1 1/2 oz dark rum (I use Myer’s)

1 oz of aged rum (typically Anejo rum, but any “gold” or “aged” rum will do fine)

1/2 oz Orange Curacao

1/2 oz Orgeat

1 oz lime juice

1/2 oz orange juice

1/4 oz simple syrup

Directions

Just take everything, put it in your cocktail shaker with ice and shake thoroughly. Serve it on the rocks in some kind of glass that’s big enough to hold it all.

Now, according to tradition, you are supposed to garnish this drink with an orange blossom and some orange peel spiral.

But we’re drunks, and we don’t have any fuckin’ orange blossoms, and we certainly don’t have the dexterity to peal up orange spirals!

So, just garnish it with a slice of orange and don’t worry about it.

This four-part series on Feng Shui in the Classroom will discuss: ideas for containing clutter, en

This four-part series on Feng Shui in the Classroom will discuss: ideas for containing clutter, enhancing teacher Feng Shui, enhancing student Feng Shui, and school building Feng Shui (including placement of classes in the school, and flow of chi around the building).

I've become progressively more interested in Feng Shui during the past several years. I've been thinking these past few months about how I can use it in my classroom. Today's post will deal with two new ideas for containing clutter in elementary classrooms.

Keeping Clutter Under Control

Count yourself VERY fortunate if you have any counter tops in your classroom. I don't. I do have a few shelves, and a tiny, tiny desk.

Using myself as an example, I continually have the problem of NO work areas, NO table, NO counters, meaning that it's not only difficult to grade papers, but that class projects turn into a nightmare of various projects all mixed up all over my desk, and my attempts to grade papers on top of all the mess for months.

[wp_caption id="attachment_507" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="My desk, as it looked most of the year - a mixture of science, social studies, and math projects, all mixed up in the daily mess."][/wp_caption]

I finally got all the clutter cleaned up in my classroom at the end of the year. I forgot to take a picture, or I'd post it here as as a pair of before and after pictures.

Now I have a PLAN now for how to prevent some of it next year. I plan to take some empty cartons (such as school supplies arrive in at the beginning of the school year) and use them for ongoing projects that usually end up all mixed up, all over my desk. I'll put a big paper label on the outside, such as "Science Project" or "History Project" so that I can keep two or three projects going at once. We have NO counters in our classroom, but I do have a couple bookshelves, so I will put the cartons on top of there when we are in the middle of projects.

I've also organized an exact PLACE for each book (that's labeled, so even my assistant puts books back where they belong), and I can find them quickly, instead of them "getting buried." Here's a picture of how I'm doing it:

[wp_caption id="attachment_508" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="My new organization system for my teacher textbooks and workbooks. Note the labels on the metal divider spaces below the books. That's what keeps them in order! (The divider made of two steel vertical files for manila file folders, placed together in a row.)"][/wp_caption]

I think the difference for me THIS year is that now I actually have a PLAN about how to keep clutter under control, whereas before, I had NO plan.

I'd love to hear other teachers share their tips about how THEY keep clutter under control in the classroom!

Part Two of this series will deal with enhancing the personal Feng Shui of teachers.

Part Three of this series will deal with enhancing student Feng Shui.

Part Four of this series will deal with classroom placement within schools, and flow of chi energy around schools.

For some reason, everyone seems to like Tahiti so we'll take another look at it. First off, realize that Tahiti also comprises of the surrounding French Polynesian islands. Historically, Tahiti has lured many figures to its secluded paradise, inclduing the crew of the H.M.S Bounty whom mutinied to remain on the island, artist Paul Gaugin who abandoned his family, and actor Marlon Brando who actually bought an island there.

So first thing you notice on your honeymoon is that Tahiti is very French. Residents speak French, restaurants serve French cuisine, resorts incorporate French culture, etc. This uniqueness combined with the native population's genuine warmth towards vacationers make for a truly romantic honeymoon. A lot of resorts greet guests with a glass of pineapple juice, a fragrant taire/flower garland, and a cool towel. And here's the best part: guests check in while chilling in the lobby chairs, not standing in line.

Here are the good ones you should work in your honeymoon itinerary.

I'm writing this post today about my honeymoon location in Bora Bora. My friends who just got married this past weekend in Chicago told us they were going to Bora Bora and Moorea in the French Polynesia because of our honeymoon pictures that we shared.

Bora Bora is the ultimate Honeymoon spot for couples who want to do the sun, sand, and relaxation mode for their first vacation as a married couple. We decided on this local because it was more exotic than Hawaii and still close enough by plane. The last thing that I wanted to do was sit on a plane for 24 hours trying to get to the Maldives, right after a weekend of crazy wedding stuff.

I really think that the pictures speak for themselves. Just to prove my point about how amazing it is, I'm going to use my own photos that I took with a point and shoot camera.

My husband and I stayed at the St Regis Bora Bora for 8 days. It was paradise found - I was completely amazed by the location, our overwater bungalow, the service, and just overall being happy to be on our honeymoon.

From LA, we took a non stop Air Tahiti Nui flight to Papeete, Tahiti and had to stay overnight in a hotel in Tahiti. I think now you can take a red eye from LA to avoid this extra night in Tahiti. There is nothing to see in Tahiti so I would skip it altogether. The next morning we took an early flight to Bora Bora - and the views from the plane were breathtaking.

When you arrive at your resort via boat transfer, you are greeted by your butler and lots of other people holding cold towels and drinks upon disembarking the boat. From there you just get pampered and go into your lazy mode of laying on the beach, reading an easy book, and eating a few meals here and there. Low pressure and enjoyable.

Of course if you want to do water sports - the hotel can arrange for all of it. Just ask them - this is the type of place where you get someone to do all of your bidding.

I really want to go back now, maybe my friends will let me sneak in their luggage. Nah I doubt that will work.

I'm back! I'm sorry about the lack of blogging, I just got back from my two month long trip to Tahiti. It's quite nice this time of year, Tahiti is. There are beaches. And fish. Pretty, colorful fish. And Tahitians.

If you read that and thought, "Josh wasn't in Tahiti," then you'd be right, I just made that up. I wasn't in Tahiti, I've just been LAZY. But I would have preferred to be lazy in Tahiti than New York, obviously.

Shockingly, my blog traffic hasn't been doing too badly for my lengthy hiatus. Blogs have a fantastic stats feature, so I can learn a good amount about how many views I get. I can even watch you all as you read my blog. I'm looking at you right now. "Is he lying again, like Tahiti?" You'll just never know.

But I do learn if someone checks out a certain blog post, and what people searched to find my blog. For some reason, I've been pulling off a solid 30 views a day, even though the only thing on my blog for like a month has been a picture of a happy cartoon bug. I figured my parents, grandparents and girlfriend would probably check the site about every other day at least...but 30 views, how's that possible? Humanity must have lost faith in my ability to post by now, right? That bug is really not that awesome to look at.

Every day I get about 20 people finding this blog by searching, "Bear Grylls." That's right. Remember that incredible version of masculinity who eats snakes and sky dives into the ocean for no apparent reason? Well, I wrote a blog about him in JANUARY (when I started the blog), called "Not Really Surviving Man," about Bear, and Les Stroud of Survivorman, and who would win in a fight and what not; I also wrote about what would happen if I were on those shows, and how quickly I would perish. So, Internet users cannot get enough of my Bear Grylls and Man vs. Wild diatribe.

Thank you very much Bear and Bear Grylls lovers for keeping this blog alive during its darkest moments. And to widen my fan base I will make an attempt to use the name Bear Grylls in all the rest of my blog posts.

BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS BEAR GRYLLS

Thank you and God bless.

I miss French coffee and French croissants in the mornings. I miss French food, French traffic, French music and French life. I miss the general French culture, and that distinct French smell when you walk past a cafe. I miss French people, French interaction. I miss French road rules. I miss French art, French boutiques and French mainlanders. I miss French cars and French attitudes ha ha. I miss the complimentary French bread that you are given when you go to a restaurant. I miss French romance. I miss it all. I miss French Polynesia. I miss mon amour.

This morning I woke up at 9:30, dreaming that I was back in French Polynesia, enjoying a breakfast at the pâtisserie a few blocks down the street, ready to plan my day. And then, I realized that I wasn't. Don't you just hate it when that happens? When you are dreaming about something really, really good, and then you realize that you've been lying to your self for about eight hours, or how ever many hours you slept!? I do. It happened to me this morning when I woke up.

This morning wasn't great. I can compare it to other dreams that I have had, where I've dreamt that my bed is surrounded with expensive gold jewels and coins, lots and lots of it. And then, you wake up to look and see if it's real, and it's so obviously not real. It makes you so angry, well, it makes me angry ha ha. I literally looked around the room to see if the gold was there, and it wasn't.

People say that dreams are messages? At the time I was thinking about money and finances, so perhaps that's why I dreamt about all of that priceless, priceless, gold. Didn't happen though. And then you get those not so pleasurable dreams... Last week I dreamt that my sister was trying to steal my pearl necklace from French Polynesia that Cyrus gave to me while I was asleep! - I don't think she would really rob me though, so I don't know where that came from. But I woke up, with my hands tightly clenched around my necklace, ha ha! (The day before that she said "Dakota, if you die can I have your necklace?" ha ha, priceless sarcasm.

Therefore, I don't know what this morning was all about... But I do try to conclude my dreams, because often they hold hidden messages. Perhaps my mind, heart and feelings were responding to my recent thoughts about getting back to Tahiti as soon as I can. Must be. Time to make that big change again, very soon I hope!

This morning I went to a café, Robert Harris to be exact... Going through newspapers and magazines just feeds me mentaly with more ideas. But I'm settling on plans, I'm just waiting for the best time to do it all. Sometimes in life... I find that it is more intelligent to wait rather than rush into things, but follow your heart feelings always. Whenever I don't follow my heart feelings I feel as though I'm making mistakes along the path. After my arrival back from French Polynesia my "heart feelings" have been so inspired, I'm just waiting time to jump on the path way, and I've got my plan set. Amazing things are coming my way after next year, which really is not that far away. I'm really excited. It's inspirational how thoughts, feelings and plans come into conjunction, wouldn't you agree? I'm so happy I can't hide it, ha ha ha.

Café's are often thinking spots, seriously, next time you go to a cafe and you see that person over there at the corner table flicking away at a paper, you'll notice. Even those busy flyers passing through have a million, trillion thoughts going on. And then, there is always that person, floating into mind space, sipping away at the double strength Mocha... Thinking... Ha ha. Social too.

- Café this morning
Yeah, that's my coffee right there. On that note, don't you just like those swirls in the milk?
I mean, I don't want to be boastful or anything, but I actually know how to do that. - My friend who has been in the café business for a long time showed me last week, when I made my first one it was nothing but a thrashed up mess, but when I made an attempt at my second one, it was perfect. - A bit similar to life don't you think? Sometimes our first attempt at everything isn't always glossy, (unless your superficially perfect), ha ha. Sometimes it just takes a bit of intellect and care to get it right, to get things on the right perspective track, sometimes it takes a dot of inspiration too. I mean, I'm pretty damn perfect, I get everything right at all the time, seriously. (That was a lie, even the most perfect of us need a bit of a running).

After the café got my hair cut, for the novelty of it. (I will admit, I do a better job on my own hair than most hair dressers who attempt my hair) but, today was just one of those days. And, it was cheap too! $10.00 New Zealand dollars for a quick trim.

Ciao~

I'm seriously just so over the weather at the moment. Hail stones and thunder storms can be such a drag, actually, as I write this entry, it is yet again, raining. Now, isn't that just so nice? Ha ha. Actually, funny enough, it's comforting! I have a cup of hot green tea to my left and the lighting in my room is dimmed to a fine scale, very comfortable. Very. Anyway, I just got back from a "mini" birthday celebration for le colleague. Le collègue ennuyant, réellement. And, at this present moment, I have plans on writing about my trip to the Tahiti national museum.

You see, when I travel abroad I like to visit low-key places of interest, especially local places! I love to observe the way of life, that for me is an experience on it's own. Me and Cyrus really enjoyed the museum, I was very curious to observe the old Polynesian history and art. Actually, to our luck, the museum also had an art display for view, really enjoyed it. Tahiti has so many talented artists too!

- The last royal king of Tahiti. King Pomare
The museum in Tahiti is really a must-see, I mean, the museum had a lot of national treasures on display, even the crown that golden crown that the king wore!

- King Pomare's resting place
On the day that me and Cyrus did a circle of the island via car, we went to this place as one of our first stops. It was incredible to be here, you could feel that the grounds were old and of particular meaning. Around Tahiti I felt this way about many places! It was an incredible feeling, a feeling that one might find difficult to explain in the verbal context of written words. I guess it just feels incredible to be in front of sacred things that have stood the test of time.

Like when we visited a special Marae on the other side of Tahiti, wow, I was really captivated. It was beautiful it it's own unique way, and 2000 years old. Amazing! The stone work was really intense. At the entrance there were carved Tiki stones! I would have taken photographs, but out of customs, it's just not something that I wanted to do. As much as I wanted to. But the memory is captivated in the thoughts that I kept. (I didn't take photographs, out of respect).

WHAT IS A MARAE??? <<-- Click to find out.

At the time, there were two French girls there and they were taking many photographs, which is a-okay, but then they started to walk all over the most sacred parts of the Marae. - You expect other people to understand the same things, but it's only logical to make sense of something that should be respected. And then they asked us in if we would take their photos. (Camwhore - Hugging some of the Tiki carvings) and I declined, and I sweetly explained to them why, they understood. Generally though, wherever I go around the world, to sacred places, I just have a bit of respect. If I don't understand the custom, I make it my business to, as it's a privilege.

- Polynesian people
This photograph at the museum was really interesting, the Polynesian people then looked so different compared to now. Less mixed features. I LOVE OLD PHOTOGRAPHS!!!

- Design
I really liked the black and white design on that wood panel! What do you think? I like the leaves intertwined with the Polynesian patterns.

- CORAL CORAL CORAL!!!
At the museum they had different breeds of pacific corals on display! I seriously could have taken them all home.

- Waka Ama
I really liked the paddling boats that were on display in the museum, they had them in all different shapes and sizes, and some of them were ancient to the age! You should have seen it! Some pretty massive ones too. (The ones used for transporting people back in the day).

- Mana
The temporary art display was really interesting! The subject of the pictures was meant to portray Mana. Mana in Polynesian language defines the meaning: - Strength. Or, you could call it integrity / power.
What was particularly interesting was viewing the different techniques that the artists used to portray Mana through art.

- French scene
But this was one of my favorites! An overt and very typical French scene. Coffee, and French bread!!!

(And... That was a real piece of FRENCH BREAD).

Ciao~
