Genius Party is an opening five-minute animation directed by Atsuko Fukushima (animator for Akira, Kiki's Delivery Service, Robot Carnival) to the animation anthology with the same name. The animation features unique characters and wide color palette that are complemented well by a very impressive soundtrack.

If you have not seen the movie yet, please do so first before reading, for the visuals can be interpreted in many different ways and it would be best to form your own vision. The following is my interpretation.

* * *

While surreal visuals can be open to interpretation, the main themes of the movie are creative process, generation of art, and its influence on people.

The film begins with a white bird gracefully flying on a pastel background.

Then we see a human who is trying to become a bird and fly. Human runs all day trying to flap artificial wings, but fails to take off the ground - something is missing. Perhaps, it is just like some people that try to do something, but don't understand the true essence.

Here we see a neuron and a heart representing cognition and passion respectively. Every good artist has some issues s/he feels strongly about and, after some contemplation, they manifest into art. It seems that the bird-human does not have the ardor the rock possesses.

Bird-human consumes the heart and gains true wings, then proceeds to consume the neuron and ascends to the skies in a form of pure energy.

A drop from the sky ignites the neuron of the rock whose heart has been stolen. It tries to regenerate that idea, that passion it used to feel, but fails. Others try too, but only develop unoriginal clones, just like many movies we see today.

Then the rocks see a ray of energy flying in the skies, an wonderful artwork that inspires them all. However, once it is gone, they forget the feeling, just like you would after seeing a film.

Only one rock remembers, only it recovers the lost feelings. Deeply touched by them, the rock resolutely follows his passion and becomes one with it. By understanding the true essence of the issue, the rock creates a wonderful artwork representing it.

The bird rises to the skies and kindles the hearts of other rocks, initiating a chain reaction of thought in the population, just like good films do.

The animation ends with a scene of a movie theater and a sound of a projector, a medium to inspire people, give them new ideas, and help them understand the world. The camera zooms in on one rock and flies into it's eye, inviting us into the heads of the directors who participated in the Genius Party project. Indeed, it is a wonderful opening to an animation anthology :)

Tonight I went waaaay outside my comfort zone and it ended up being a lot of fun! Dave from Blogog

Tonight I went waaaay outside my comfort zone and it ended up being a lot of fun! Dave from Blogography travels a lot and likes to meet other bloggers/readers/cool people, so being in Atlanta, he invited folks to Davelanta II at the Hard Rock Cafe tonight. I tried in vain to get a friend to come with me, promising that it wasn't as sketchy as it sounded, but everyone had better things to do, like work or go to weddings. Booo.

So I hopped on MARTA (that's right, I took public transportation and was not going to a big event or the airport) and headed downtown to the HRC to meet a bunch of total strangers for dinner. After wandering through the restaurant looking for the 3-D version of a guy whose picture I know pretty well, I found him and Beth of Copasetic Beth and her husband (sorry, I can't remember the name of your blog!) up at the bar. I was presented with my very own name badge and flare (flair?) and immediately felt my level of coolness skyrocket. In short time, we were joined by Heather of Confessions of a Coal Miner's Granddaughter and Mike and Diane of Americans in Singapore. Lots of pictures were taken, iPhones were shown off, and I met another X-Phile and have some great new blogs to read!

I realized I've never been to a Hard Rock before and (other than the price) actually enjoyed the food and a 420. It was insanely loud, but at least the music was good :) Now that I've met and hung out with other bloggers, the pressure is on to maybe write in this thing a little more often and try to make it somewhat interesting. I think part of my problem is that I think of things to write at the worst times (like in the middle of church or while I'm driving) and I'm never totally satisfied with the look of my site. It's definitely a work in progress.

The whole experience was a little surreal, since we had nothing but Dave connecting us all, but isn't that what's so cool about this whole blogging thing?

Here's my super cool name badge thingy! I wore it all the way home with pride.

So what's the flair all about? I put a lot of thought into this. Starting from top left and going down and around:

Skull and Crossbones: because pirates are just cool and I secretly want to be one

Lemon slice: umm, I love lemons?

Lil' Dave brushing his teeth: Now I'll never forget to brush!

Artificial Duck: Who doesn't like a wind-up duck? And this will remind me to go buy some awesome playing cards.

Devil Bad Monkey: He's the icon of our gathering tonight, how could I not add him?

Swirly Purple: You're getting verrrrrry sleepy . . .

if you haven't figured this out yet, i am an advocate of bullet-point format. it's what this guy and I have in common. that said, a list of several highly surreal incidents from the past 24 hours.

I'm not trying to call out any of my house-mates who might stumble upon this blog, but yesterday I walked into the bathroom and found a piece of bread in the toilette. It wasn't chewed and spit up, or de-crusted or altered in any way at all. It was just a slice of bread, chilling in the toilette. Maybe it was the mood I was in, but it struck me as incredibly strange. It is something so incredibly out of place, you realize that the questions you ask when you see a piece of bread in the toilette are not so dissimilar from those questions that we are all trying to answer in life. Who put me here and why? What am I supposed to be doing here? And of all places, why a toilette?

Last night we all went to see the new batman. Various news sources tell me that batman set all sorts of box office records last night. If you haven't already seen it, let me spare you the trouble.

There is a lunatic named the joker. He has no motives other than spreading fear and hatred. Also, he likes to blow things up using...wait for it...barrels of oil.

In order to stop him, gotham city and batman suspend any sort of semblance of due process, illegally capture and incarcerate criminals with no regard to rights, and torture them to get information. oh, and they set up a surveillance system that turns every cellphone in the city into a security camera.

Because of the aforementioned steps they have taken, they are able to save the city.

There are brief moments when characters wax reflective about the ethics of batman's behavior, but it is decided in the end that he is a misunderstood hero.

Everybody leaves the theater talking about heath ledger, and also how hot christian bale is.

This morning the gas in our kitchen didn't work. A guy came over to check it out and told us, that because it was winter, the gas was probably frozen. It is 80 degrees outside.

I was driving my car up Bukit Tinggi. During the journey, most part of the roads was not in good shape. The place was not well developed as well. Probably it was during the initial development of the place. As I was climbing up the hill in my car, I detoured quite a number of time, cutting my route short, via the empty lands that were privately owned.

When I was just a couple of kilometres away from the summit, my car’s low fuel indicator was lit up. It looked different from my car’s indicator. It was shown on the left dial of the dashboard’s meter and it has white and red colour on the icon. I wanted to look for Caltex, but there was only Petronas up there. I dare not take the risk of not fueling up my car before going downhill, as I came up with only 1 quarter of my tank.

I stopped beside the pump station, but it does not accept credit card. I had to go into the shop and pay. I paid for RM10 of fuel only. Then I went out and fill up my car. When the pumping station was showing somewhere around RM7+ of filling, the fuel started leaking from my tank. Suddenly, my car has turned into a motorbike. Apparently, RM10 of petrol was way too much for the bike’s tank. I put the nozzle back at its place and moved my bike to one side of the petrol station.

Then I saw a Caucasian walking toward the pump station with dirty feet. I could see thick underwater mud wrapping his feet like a pair of shoes. He was looking at a pump station as if he wanted to wash his feet with petrol. Then I went over and talked to him. I told him that the pump station that I used earlier had balance of fuel, so I asked him to use that. He nodded and thanked me, then I saw him lifted the nozzle and flush his feet with the petrol. The mud came off, but his feet still looked as if there was a pair of socks on it. Apparently, the area that was covered by the mud earlier has turned the pigments on his feet into mud colour.

Later I found out from the Caucasian that he was there for surfing and the waves were strong and high. Eventually, I knew that he was an Australian and suddenly I felt like I was at Bali, as most Aussies frequent Bali for their waves.

Featuring the work of new up and coming talent from around the region.

Mike Smith the owner of Mooch claims that" buying original art used to be the preserve of the rich or the brave.  Our aim is to make it more affordable and more accessible, bringing talent to the fore. We are fostering a renaissance in the North West and want everyone to appreciate the unique, the individual, the piece that truly stands out as something that is yours and no one else’s. It gives you a smug feeling in a world of mass production."

I have a series of my own images on show at Mooch and I'm happy to say there has been considerable interest in them, the images in question are a nine part series titled "Urban Angels". These images, are a symbolic visualisation of the long held religious belief that Angels invisibly walk the earth providing each of us with guidance and protection. Although the ethereal beauty of the angels creates a vivid contrast against the gritty backdrop of stark urban reality they still manage to appear inconspicuously at home in their urban surroundings. If you would like to hear more about my work and this particular series of images listen to the Mooch podcast or if you would like to see more of these images visit my web-site etherealme.co.uk.

The cataclysmic event of moving across the country and settling into new routines, new church, new friends, new temperatures, new LIFE--leaves me with so much to say I don't know where to start. So I'll begin with a word:

GRATEFUL.

Grateful for so much. But first for the trees. I forgot about trees. I forgot what it's like to live in and around them. On my back deck I can see and hear a Quaking Aspen--taller than the house, leaves flashing silver in the wind. Then there are the Evergreens. Tall and close--home to woodpeckers; surrounding me with beauty, tucking me away from the busyness of life. I feel like I'm on an extended retreat here, right in my own house. I needed to be away from this part of the country for awhile to appreciate what I took for granted. I didn't really notice before and now I can't stop staring. I found an old, old tree on a nearby trail--big knots, mammoth trunk. I waved hello, and wondered if it had been there even before the college in 1883. I wanted to know what it could tell me.

Also, I was glad no one saw me wave at the tree.
