Wonder Girls are back! I actually like this song a bit more than So Hot. So Hot was good, but this one shows off their vocal skills. I like to watch them perform the retro style songs because they have that deep rough voice at times. Which they need to show off. The only thing that irked me about the music video was Park Jin Young being in the restroom - nature calls.

I really like Sunmi's hair in the Supremes look. I really thought the song was gonna be a ballad, but it's a pop song with some vocals. Good job! SNSD has too much girly pop for me. It's always a damn happy song - and it needs a bit flavor. This song shows the soul and different style that people need in life.

While watching a rerun of the movie Dreamgirls recently, my brain suddenly woke up and I looked for a credit to Mary Wilson, an original Supreme and the author of "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme". There was none.

Well, maybe not “on” the show as a guest, but during one particular broadcast of the show when it originated from Cleveland her lovely face made it on the screen for several seconds as the show faded out to a commercial break. She was an audience member. During the early 60’s Mom and other ladies from the neighborhood “coffee clutch” would travel 45 minutes north to Cleveland from Orrville, OH and sit in the audience for the show.

I can vividly recall her going there at least three times and one instance remains etched in my memory because Mom and the other ladies went for a show during the summer and my siblings had to go to my Aunt Lois’ that day. Usually they went when school was in session but that particular week Mike Douglas had a hot new rising superstar of stage and screen on the show as co-host that Mom and her buddies HAD to see.

Who was this diva? Why a very young Barbara Streisand that’s who.

It was 1963.

Mom dropped off my older sister, baby sister and younger brother and myself (our oldest brother was working that summer) at Aunt Lois’ and off she went. Of course Aunt Lois wanted to watch the show on TV and as we waited for the show to begin later that morning something else significant happened. My baby sister Karen took her first steps! I also recall that day that our older sister Cheryl tried (in vain) to teach my brother and myself how to roller skate on the sidewalk in front of Aunt Lois’ house on East Oak Street. Needless to say that was my first and last lesson in rolling skating and I never attempted that feat again.

Once the show started Aunt Lois hollered for us to come in and watch although we really had no interest in an old guy like Mike Douglas. But when Aunt Lois commanded, you obeyed!

When Douglas would take a commercial break and say “We’ll be right back after this message!” the cameraman would scan across the applauding audience made up of primarily housewives from across northeast Ohio. On one particular break as they scanned the audience the camera settled on Mom for five or more seconds before going to the commercial. Her whole face was splashed across the TV screen and we literally freaked out! Including Aunt Lois! I think she was more shocked and excited than we were.

Mom was excited once she found out she was shown on TV but nearly as excited when she learned Karen took her first steps, although she was a bit disappointed that she missed out on that event.

I have no recollection of who the guests were that day and over the years Mom forgot too, but it was all about this young upcoming star named Streisand that she and her pals were interested in that day.

Douglas came to Cleveland in 1961 to start that show that eventually aired each weekday for 20 years. The show aired on KYW-TV Channel 3 (now known as WKYC) and by August of ’63 had gone into national syndication before moving to Philadelphia in 1965. The show aired live until one time in ’65 when guest Zsa Zsa Gabor uttered an obscenity over the air which resulted in the show being taped from that point on. Douglas’ first show in Philadelphia was August 30, 1965 and I remember when the move was announced Mom was disappointed that she would be unable to attend any more shows.

As a young kid Mike Douglas was considered an old guy and I usually only watched it when I was home sick from school. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how progressive and hip he was in the guests he had on over the years. In addition to the usual bevy of TV and movie stars he wasn’t shy about booking rock 'n roll stars and during the run of the show the highest ratings week he had was the week John & Yoko co-hosted (I skipped school one day that week to catch the Lennon’s and Chuck Berry). I also took a half-day off school to catch KISS on his show.

About 12 years ago VH1 reran the week of John & Yoko shows and I still have them on tape.

During the 60’s and 70’s such rock stars as the Turtles, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Raspberries, Kinks, Supremes, Animals, Bee Gees, James Brown, Blondie, Sam Cooke, Cowsills, Cass Elliott, Peter Frampton, Marvin Gaye, Moby Grape, Chaka Kahn, Elton John, Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Patti Smith, Edgar Winter, Vanilla Fudge and many, many more.

Douglas, born on August 11, 1925, passed away on his birthday in 2006.

Resposta: The Beatles.

20 vezes: The Beatles
18 vezes: Mariah Carey
13 vezes: Michael Jackson
12 vezes: Madonna e The Supremes
11 vezes: Whitney Houston
10 vezes: Janet Jackson e Stevie Wonder
9 vezes: Bee Gees, Elton John e Paul McCartney
8 vezes: The Rolling Stones e Usher

Remember when Solange Knowles, little sister to the one with mega-stage presence and plenty of nume

Remember when Solange Knowles, little sister to the one with mega-stage presence and plenty of numero uno hits, released a potentially suicide inducing album circa 2003? Neither does virtually anyone else. However, it did happen. After this and getting knocked up at a fairly young age, Solange seemed to disappear -- except for the occasional writing credit for the Marcia of the family, Beyonce, and other individuals associated with the Houston-based Knowles Mafia.

Color me not just surprised -- but VERY surprised -- when I say that I really like... like REALLY like... the Freemasons' remix of Solange's song (from her upcoming album?!?!) "I Decided," aptly titled "I Decided Part 2." Hell seriously must have frozen over for someone to give this girl another chance.

The song in tow with its video almost borders on brilliance. The remix by the Freemasons, more so than the original Neptunes' edit, fits the fusion of social and cultural identities expressed by video director, Melina -- set to technicolor pop art. While "I Decided" is merely a Supremes-influenced story of one's love, the song's remixed production values combined with the video's images elevates it to another level. The song and video together express the evolution of civil liberties set to ANY pop song (spanning from the '60s to the present) because "I Decided Part 2" sounds like an orgy of the decades. The Freemasons' sounds, along with the glamour and glitter of the video, pay homage to not just musical influence, but to social influence for racial equality and the expression of cultural identity.

"I Decided Part 2" falls short due to the fact that while images of racial equality and injustices abound toward the beginning, they become much more muted as the video progresses. On one hand, the theme becomes more subtle simply due to the fact that Jim Crow did not have a place in the '90s. Therefore, images of marches and rallies are going to be fewer and farther between. Instead, for example, we get the artwork of Keith Haring which is infused with a message of social justice. Eventually, however, we jump to the future where the pop art style of the video is gone and it feels as if Solange is simply being Jan Brady and competing with Big Sis.

This video could have received the ultimate gold star if Solange and the director kept up with images of race, culture, and (gasp) Solange's personal feelings associated with being African American in today's society. With the images that preceded the shallow outer space scenes, it could have brought Solange to a place that her sister has never been -- it could have shown her as someone truly having, believing, and wanting to deliver a message to people.

Hooray Barack! You’ve managed to make John McBush McCain reveal what a whiney inner bitch he i

Hooray Barack! You've managed to make John McBush McCain reveal what a whiney inner bitch he is by pulling the dirtiest trick you can play on a republican, using their secret weapon against them. That secret weapon is, of course, MONEY. This explanation is provided for those readers who are either from another country, or are a graduate of the American public school system. Money manipulation has always been the republican's stock in trade, Herr Karl Rove must be twisting in the wind at this point, simply frothing at those flapping jowls. Or perhaps just picking his nose with his thumb.

Should the press persists in asking why you're not taking the public money, the answer is the same as the punch line to the old joke about why a dog licks his private parts; Because he can........

But, the true high point here is that you will cause the republicans to have to cough up a lot of cash to try to keep Bush-III in the running, thereby draining away funds from others of that ilk in lesser offices.

This is a clear ground rule double, a great job Obamie-wan!!!

Obamie-Wan has such a nice, natural ring to it, so my permission is hereby granted to the Obama campaign folks to use it as they see fit, just remember where you got it from after the election when you're looking for people to place on the warcrimes trial jury for Bush, Cheney, Condi, Rummy, Rove, a host of other lesser weasels, and many of the "Supremes".

In case you don't keep up with pop culture, Solange is the baby sister of Beyonce Knowles. She has performed as a background singer for Destiny's Child and as the vocalist for the theme song of Disney's "The Proud Family." Solange has been performing as long as her sister, but is now really to step out of big sister's shadow with her own three girl act called the Hadley Street Dreams.

I had the chance to see Solange perform live as the opening act for Raheem Devaughn and Chrisette Michelle on the "Art of Love" Tour (before she broke her foot) where she performed a 15-20 minute set of what can be best be described as updated 60s music (ala Dreamgirls). You can get a taste for her style by watching the video for her first single, "I Decided." The song was reportedly written by Cee-Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley) and produced by The Neptunes. Just an indication that the song is a definitely different from anything else out there. I must admit that it took a few listens for the song to grow on me, but it is apparent that Solange is out there working hard just like her big sis and making a name for herself. I can also give her credit for the fact that she held her on own on the stage and kept the attention of the crowd. They were right there along with her which is a good sign of her potential star power.

Check out her colorful video with the fabulous Harlem imagery in the background. For more on Solange, check out her MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/solange

Das ist JAMES JAMERSON, der Boss am Bass.

James wer?

August 1982 in L.A.

The weak just whooshed by, what with all my charity work... the neighbors would fail without me to compare themselves too. The role I play is that of the really, dumb fat socially inept best friend, that you alway want to be seen with so that by comparison you look drop dead gorgeously thin, intelligent and faux pax-less when in fact it is all an act on my behalf; I can puff myself up like a bullfrog. Intellectually I can force the IQ level way up and the chronological age way down or vice versa...well on the street where I live, but it keeps them happy (the neighbors), the hormone levels in balance (ditto) if maybe gender detached. There are some very strange looking tranvestites; on the street where I live

Let's get the stars out of the way first.... they lied. My substantial increase in wealth didn't arrive unless you count the $3.19 miscalculation by my bank...by thursday my lucky colour was:beige. Next week I hit the tea leaves, altho I am developing a system for reading cork crumbs at the base of a wine glass: a great deal of research has gone into this phenomena this week, tho' as the week progressed and the substantial increase in wealth appeared not to be looking 'too flash' I went from imported to domestic to trying the technique on chateax cardboard.

On Wednesday, the new house cleaners arrived, yes they are and yes it is. They came in the form of 3 and they did a brilliant job, 'well he would say that' having not been able to blackmail even the local sexual deviant into cleaning for me. There was the Diana Ross person who egoed the proceedings and the two semi backing singers who whizzed around, not unlike rocketmen with back pack vacs. The effect was very noisy, much akin to having a hornet trapped in both eardrums.... The only downside was I had a collection of roaches on top of a paint tin in the laundry: I was intending to do some personal recombinant DNA research with them later in the day as I could even at this stage see where the day was heading: they apparently got sucked into Cindy Birdsongs back pack and I feel would have lost some of my upmarket credibility to have ripped the vacuum cleaner from her back and done an internal lint-o-nectomy on it.....MEANWHILE up on the roof was the roof cleaner...totally unrelated to the supremes... a 'friend' who though he was being paid insisted on doing it ala Sinatra (I do it my way). Now it has been claimed around the neighborhood that I can exhibit minor control freak tendencies HAH! as if!! ... the day degenerated as the roof boot scooting increased in volume. I fled for the Valium stock, topped up with my research on wine cork reading thingy and things eased themselves down-ish. At some point I was accused of speaking in tongues I did some inspired design work, which the next day only required me to figure out which way was up.

The supremes return in a fortnight....... I am ready; the boot scooter returns on Monday (only half finished) and I am not ready. We are hoping for a disaster to intervein.... otherwise I will be sticking something there as a coping mechanizm.

Oh visitors last night and overnight...AND suprise of surprises next night as well:god how come my stars didn't see that coming?.... I will up date this one next blagging: 'come back boot scooting roof man..a day earlier'.

The week is not looking good (according to the bottom of the bottle where apparently my favorite colour is, sauvignon blanc) . Could it get worse? well yes actually, bookclub happens on Thursday morning. I'm going to suggest the braille version of the Karma Sutra.. crack out the rusty razor blades.

Girls can endure any type of music if they are in a night club or a in pub but there are few musical styles which really appeal to women. If you play slow tempo ballad with a smooth soul singer you can really make it to a girls heart, well you know that a Barry White bass voice often transport a girl imagination into "love galaxy."

You see in every girl there is a loathing for what the marketing men have done with music over the past two decades. They often want to go back and listen to the very earliest soul music whether it was Oiis Redding, Sam Cook or early Aretha Franklin when there was a blur between what soul and gospel were.

I have seen a fascist comedian decry women for loving Motown but you have to understand that some quality vibes were played then From the Supremes to Smoky Robinson to the early Jackson five.

What she realises that she was truly spoiled and that she should have appreciated those times before electronics took over from musician playing real instrument. These days musicians are very happy to let the public know that they are miming over pre-recorded material, have they no shame?

She often hears covers by "here today and gone tomorrow" musicians of hits but although the sound clean but they are missing the emotion, in fact soul. You see soul was always an intangible quality, you knew it when you felt it but you could never describe it.

Soul music was about love and compared to the near nude girls who are in hip-hop videos let alone the explicit and exploitative lyrics. You can see why soul music appeal because it was the ultimate girl music. Can anyone honestly compare Marvin Gaye with Tupac "Thug Life"? As for the female singers around today, they should learn to dress less like hookers and go to church where all the soul singers came from. You see they really have to cover for their lack of class by wearing mini skirts.

In keeping with our new theme of writing about our lives, etc; I thought todays post should talk a little bit about my hectic, albeit compact schedule for the upcoming weekend. But first a little bit about what I do.

I've been a professional musician pretty much all of my adult life, and an amateur one since the age of 8. I often find peoples perceptions of what I do way off the mark. Many times, over the years, I've had people come up and say "Hey, you're great! You could be professional!" I calmly explain that I am, in fact, professional. "No", they persist, "I mean, like on the TV". I further counsel them that I have in fact appeared on TV many times, alongside stars from the 60's, 70's, and beyond, and that many of my former heroes are now in fact my friends. They dig in. "No, I mean Top of the Pops." So there we have it. The criteria for fame, achievement and professionalism is appearance on a show where you mime.

People also find it hard to understand that you can play to 10,000 one day, and perhaps 50, in a pub, the next. But that is the nature of the job, and I've done just that many times. It's not just the general public that get this wrong. People in the business do too. The Ents manager on a cruise ship where I was performing my solo show in the Caribbean a few years ago was moaning about The Supremes. For the uniniated, The Supremes are the single most successful all-girl group of all time. I was support for them on their New Years Eve show as we meandered between the islands. They had asked for some sandwiches in their cabin. Phil the ents guy, was moaning about it. I stopped him. "They're the Supremes, Phil!! You have an onboard florist, you should have had flowers in their cabin, and a tray of sandwiches when they boarded. It costs you nothing, and you will get it back ten-fold in goodwill!" He didnt seem to understand. Then I told him of how WE were looked after on our International tours with the bands I play with. Complimentary trips to whisky distilleries, Private viewings of Lenin's tomb, Specific days off for sightseeing in New York. He seemed stunned. I understood why. Being humble and easygoing breeds contempt. You need to tell everybody you're important, and they believe you. I knew a guitarist who was working in a band supporting an old star of the 50's , Dorothy Squiers (she used to be married to Roger Moore) at a large Northern variety venue. Her career had seen better days, and the guitarist had been asked to take a crate of champagne backstage to the Grande Dame's dressing room. He knocked and nervously entered. "Where would you like these, Mrs. Squires?" he asked. "It's not Mrs, its Miss, and put the f**kers in the corner!" came the thorny reply.

It's a funny old world....

Anyway, lets look at my trip as an episode of the TV series "24". The clock starts at 18:30 hours, when I pull into the car park at Alicante aiport. I have just 10 minutes to get to check in before it closes, and my flight leaves at 19:20. I land in Manchester at 21:10, and with only hand luggage, I will make a swift exit and run through arrivals to board the airport train to Manchester Piccadilly. I will be met by Mark, the guitarist, and we will drive the 5 minutes to the exclusive club gig in the City Centre, where we will take the stage at 23:00 for half an hour of the Sweet's greatest hits. Following the show, I retire to my reserved suite in the hotel above the venue. After chatting with the guys, drying off and changing, I'm hoping to get my head down by 1 A.M.

I'll rise for an early breakfast, aiming to be out of the hotel for 0900, in an attempt to do a little morning shopping. This is quite simply, the most important part of the trip. I am on a mission to find some Pink Silk pyjamas for Miki; something we've so far failed to do in France and Spain. And all this before catching the airport train from Piccadilly back out to the Airport in time to check in at around 13:00. My flight leaves Manchester at 14:30, landing around 18:10, and once again, with only hand luggage, I'm out of arrivals and back at my car at 18:30.

This is fairly typical of my trips, though it is by no means my shortest. I will be in the UK for 17 hours and 20 minutes. I did a show in the West Country last year, where I got it down to just 14 hours. It depends how the flights fall. I will of course, dedicate the additional 3 hours 20 minutes to pyjama hunting.

Of course, some of my trips are excrutiatingly complex, such as one in Germany last year that entailed no less than 17 train connections over 2 days, and usually for a show that lasts no longer than 60 minutes. It is a life like this that prompted my friend and fellow musician Saxon's Graham Oliver to declare: "Let's get this minor inconvenience out of the way" before going on stage on one of the tours we did together. Sometimes, amidst the confusion, chaos, potential lost luggage, unprepared hotel rooms and missed connections, there lurks the reason for it all. Blink, and you'll miss it. But for those precious few magical minutes under the lights, with a sea of expectant faces, and the guitar coming to life in your hands, it's all worthwhile.

liar!
in every successful group there is a beyonce. either the best vocalist or the best manipula

liar!

in every successful group there is a beyonce. either the best vocalist or the best manipulator, or daddy's little girl. but divas in training beware: for every beyonce, there is a nicole scherzinger.

download here

beyonce - suga mama

it's a good job bee actually did have talent cos daddy would have pushed her to the front no matter what. its funny but i actually prefer her voice in the early dc days, and i definitely prefer dc4 harmonies.

bobby brown - i really love you girl

not so much a solo choice rather than being kicked out of new edition. still, he was so young it was a bit like when i was kicked out of the brownies, albeit on a, cough, more global scale. so what? except i was shown the red card for locking brown owl in a cupboard, not boozing and having an illegitimate child...

coko - sunshine

well, who can blame coko if the rumours of swv's financial ruin were true. it's a shame it didn't work out...i think the swv harmonies played a bigger role than she thought.

diana ross - upside down

the original diva, hence 'diana ross and the supremes'. funny how the weakest singer in a group can overcome that obstacle, to become the biggest star. all it took was a large amount of deluded self-belief and some willing lackeys.

george michael - too funky

the least likely to be accused of letting his ego push aside more talented group members - it was an accepted fact that andrew ridgeley did little more than shake a tambourine and look cute in hawaiian gear.

justin timberlake - last night

anyone who says they saw the star potential of curly headed justin in his n*sync days has selective memory. i was surprised such an ugly group got a deal and didn't think any had longevity. imagine explaining britney's dazzling influence to an alien in 2008 - '...and britney was this clean cut, wholesome, family loving christian whose star power catapulted him to solo fame...'

lionel richie - serves you right

love lionel richtea. i might have to do a whole post on him just so i can put up that picture. oh screw it, if anyone is wondering why at the top of this post there is a picture of lionel richie with a biscuit (cookie) in place of his 'fro...this is why.

morris day - love addition

morris day really wanted to be prince. he did ok. he never really left the time.

raphael saadiq - get involved

the transition from tony toni tone was fairly seamless - i'm not always 100% which tracks belong to who. same sound, same voice...could have just kept the other on the payroll? that's rarely the point though is it...

ray parker jr - a woman needs love

ray already had a touch of the dianas, changing the name of his group, already 'raydio', to 'ray parker jr and raydio'. so no one should have been surprised when he became a fully fledged solo artist. i hope there was someone else called ray left in that group he named after himself...

t-boz - touch myself

tlc's was a well documented financial struggle, which allegedly saw laface CEO pebbles tie the girls into a fruitless contract. t-boz seized an opportunity to capitalise on crazysexycool but the point was, none of tlc were vocally outstanding, but together they provided contrast - the gravelly voiced t-boz, angelic chilli and cute rapper left eye. individually...nothing special.

terry ellis - what did i do to you

if you blinked in 1995, you could have missed this solo foray from ms ellis. en vogue were back together faster than roadrunner once it became clear that their group appeal far ouweighed their solo potential. they attempted to drop troublemaker dawn robinson over the years, with varying degrees of success.
