NASA/JPL-Caltech/E. Dwek and R. Arendt

Explanation:

Hot spots near the shattered remains of an exploded star are echoing the blast's first moments, say scientists using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.

Eli Dwek of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. and Richard Arendt of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, say these echoes are powered by radiation from Cassiopeia A supernova shock wave that blew the star apart some 11,000 years ago.

"We're seeing the supernova's first flash," Dwek said.

Previously, other Spitzer researchers discovered hot spots near the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant and recognized the spots' importance as light echoes of the original blast. Dwek and Arendt used Spitzer data to probe this hot dust and pin down the cause of the echoes more precisely.

Six knots of silicate dust near the remnant show temperatures between -173 and -123 degrees Celsius (-280 and -190 degrees Fahrenheit). Although this might seem frigid by earthly standards, such temperatures are downright hot compared to typical interstellar dust.

Writing in the October 1 issue of The Astrophysical Journal, the scientists show that the only event that could make the grains this hot is the powerful and short-lived pulse of ultraviolet radiation and X-rays that heralded the death of the star. The flash was a hundred billion times brighter than the sun, but lasted only a day or so.

"They've identified the precise event during the demolition of the star that produces the echo we see," said Michael Werner, the project scientist for Spitzer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Light from the explosion reached Earth in the 17th century, but no one noticed. The Spitzer find gives astronomers a second chance to study the supernova as it unfolds.

Although the explosion originally escaped detection, its aftermath -- a hot, expanding gas cloud known as Cassiopeia A (Cas A, for short) -- is one of the best-studied supernova remnants. The blast zone lies 11,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia.

When a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel, its core collapses into a superdense, city-sized object called a neutron star. As the neutron star forms, it stiffens and rebounds. This triggers a mammoth shock wave that blows the star's outer layers to smithereens. The exiting shock creates a high-energy flash that precedes the supernova's rise in visible light.

Evidence for a flash associated with this "shock breakout" existed only in computer simulations until January 9, 2008. That's when NASA's Swift satellite detected a 5-minute-long X-ray pulse from galaxy NGC 2770. A few days later, a new supernova -- designated SN 2008D -- appeared in the galaxy.

The infrared echoes from Cas A arise from dust clouds about 160 light-years farther away than the remnant. The supernova's initial radiation pulse expands through space at the speed of light, then encounters the clouds and heats their dust grains. The dust, in turn, re-radiates the energy at infrared wavelengths.

The breakout radiation took 160 years to reach the clouds and, once heated, the dust's infrared energy had to make up the same distance. This extra travel time results in a 320-year offset between the supernova's initial outward-moving flash and arrival of the dust's infrared echo at Earth. The researchers plan to use the echoes to paint an intimate portrait of the explosion, the star and the immediate environment.

When light from the Cas A supernova first reached Earth in the late 1600s, no one reported seeing a new star. On August 16, 1680, the English astronomer John Flamsteed might have seen the supernova without recognizing it. He recorded a faint naked-eye star near the position of Cas A, but none exists there now.

First there was the theoretical Big Bang that got the universe going. Several billion years passed

First there was the theoretical Big Bang that got the universe going. Several billion years passed. Then a Little Bang birthed our solar system.

At least scientists have long thought that's how it went, and now they have a computer model to back up the idea that our sun is the product of an explosive event. The new modeling finds that a supernova, or exploding star, could indeed have triggered birth of our sun in a dense cloud of gas and dust, the researchers say.

Stars are born when a cloud of material collapses. Exactly what triggers the collapse is not entirely known. One idea is that most stars, including perhaps our sun, were created in dense starbirth regions when another very massive star explodes, putting intense pressure on surrounding clouds.

"We've had chemical evidence from meteorites that points to a supernova triggering our solar system's formation since the 1970s," said theorist Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution. "But the devil has been in the details. Until this study, scientists have not been able to work out a self-consistent scenario, where collapse is triggered at the same time that newly created isotopes from the supernova are injected into the collapsing cloud."

Short-lived radioactive isotopes -- versions of elements with the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons -- found in very old meteorites decay on time scales of millions of years and turn into different (so-called daughter) elements. Finding the daughter elements in primitive meteorites implies that the parent short-lived radioisotopes must have been created only a million or so years before the meteorites themselves were formed.

"One of these parent isotopes, iron-60, can be made in significant amounts only in the potent nuclear furnaces of massive or evolved stars," Boss today. "Iron-60 decays into nickel-60, and nickel-60 has been found in primitive meteorites. So we've known where and when the parent isotope was made, but not how it got here."

Previous models by Boss and former DTM Fellow Prudence Foster showed that the isotopes could be deposited into a pre-solar cloud if a shock wave from a supernova explosion slowed to 6 to 25 miles per second and the wave and cloud had a constant temperature of -440 degrees Fahrenheit (10 K).

"Those models didn't work if the material was heated by compression and cooled by radiation, and this conundrum has left serious doubts in the community about whether a supernova shock started these events over four billion years ago or not," said Harri Vanhala, who found the negative result in his Ph.D. thesis work at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in 1997.

In several runs on the computer, the shock front was made to strike a pre-solar cloud of material with the mass of our sun, consisting of dust, water, carbon monoxide, and molecular hydrogen, reaching temperatures as high as 1,340°F (1000 K). In the absence of cooling, the cloud could not collapse.

However, with a newly crafted theoretically plausible cooling law, the researchers found that after 100,000 years the pre-solar cloud was 1,000 times denser than before, and that heat from the shock front was rapidly lost, resulting in only a thin layer with temperatures close to 1,340 degrees F (1000 K). After 160,000 years, the cloud center had collapsed to become a million times denser, forming the protosun. The researchers found that isotopes from the shock front were mixed into the protosun in a manner consistent with their origin in a supernova.

Other studies have suggested that our sun may have been born in a very crowded environment, near massive stars, but has since drifted to its relatively lonely position in space.

"This is the first time a detailed model for a supernova triggering the formation of our solar system has been shown to work," said Boss. "We started with a Little Bang 9 billion years after the Big Bang."

The results are detailed in the Oct. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal. Boss has previously shown that all this violent activity might have contributed to the makeup of our planetary system, too.

Would the discovery of such a 'bubble' actually cause any problems for religion and people of Faith?

Scientists: Earth May Exist in Giant Cosmic Bubble

If the notion of dark energy sounds improbable, get ready for an even more outlandish suggestion.

Earth may be trapped in an abnormal bubble of space-time that is particularly devoid of matter.

Scientists say this condition could account for the apparent acceleration of the universe's expansion, for which dark energy currently is the leading explanation.

Dark energy is the name given to the hypothetical force that could be drawing all the stuff in the universe outward at an ever-increasing rate.

Current thinking is that 74 percent of the universe could be made up of this exotic dark energy, with another 21 percent being dark matter, and normal matter comprising the remaining 5 percent.

Until now, there has been no good way to choose between dark energy or the void explanation, but a new study outlines a potential test of the bubble scenario.

If we were in an unusually sparse area of the universe, then things could look farther away than they really are and there would be no need to rely on dark energy as an explanation for certain astronomical observations.

"If we lived in a very large under-density, then the space-time itself wouldn't be accelerating," said researcher Timothy Clifton of Oxford University in England. "It would just be that the observations, if interpreted in the usual way, would look like they were."

Scientists first detected the acceleration by noting that distant supernovae seemed to be moving away from us faster than they should be.

One type of supernova (called Type Ia) is a useful distance indicator, because the explosions always have the same intrinsic brightness.

Since light gets dimmer the farther it travels, that means that when the supernovae appear faint to us, they are far away, and when they appear bright, they are closer in.

But if we happened to be in a portion of the universe with less matter in it than normal, then the space-time around us would be different than it is outside, because matter warps space-time.

Light travelling from supernovae outside our bubble would appear dimmer, because the light would diverge more than we would expect once it got inside our void.

One problem with the void idea, though, is that it negates a principle that has reigned in astronomy for more than 450 years: namely, that our place in the universe isn't special.

When Nicholas Copernicus argued that it made much more sense for the Earth to be revolving around the sun than vice versa, it revolutionized science.

Since then, most theories have to pass the Copernican test. If they require our planet to be unique, or our position to be exalted, the ideas often seem unlikely.

"This idea that we live in a void would really be a statement that we live in a special place," Clifton told SPACE.com. "The regular cosmological model is based on the idea that where we live is a typical place in the universe. This would be a contradiction to the Copernican principle."

Clifton, along with Oxford researchers Pedro G. Ferreira and Kate Land, say that in coming years we may be able to distinguish between dark energy and the void.

They point to the upcoming Joint Dark Energy Mission, planned by NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy to launch in 2014 or 2015.

The satellite aims to measure the expansion of the universe precisely by observing about 2,300 supernovae.

The scientists suggest that by looking at a large number of supernovae in a certain region of the universe, they should be able to tell whether the objects are really accelerating away, or if their light is merely being distorted in a void.

The new study will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Physical Review Letters.

We had our inaugeral gravitation group journal club meeting this afternoon. The article wasn't too gravity centric, but after reading it we all had wondered approximately the same thing. The article is "A blast wave from the 1843 eruption of $latex \eta&bg=ffffff$ Carinae", by Nathan Smith. It appears in the 11 September issue of Nature, and can be found under this link.

We wondered if this event had happened today, would LIGO have detected it? We chose to attack the problem by finding the necessary energy put into gravitational waves. We used a formula from "300 Years of Gravitation", page 371:

$latex h_{c}\simeq2.7\times10^{-20}\left(\frac{\Delta E_{GW}}{M_{sun}c^{2}}\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}\left(\frac{1\,\mathrm{kHz}}{f_{c}}\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}\left(\frac{10\,\mathrm{MPc}}{r_{o}}\right)&bg=ffffff$

After making our assumptions and plugging and chugging (thanks Peter!), we came up with $latex \Delta E_{GW} \simeq 2\times10^{47}&bg=ffffff$, which is about 1% of the energy we can see in the motion of the Homunculus nebula (the object that resulted from the Great Outburst of 1843). That didn't sound too implausible, so we thought it bore further investigation.

A second question, which we had no way to answer, was "what effect does this event have othe population of supernovae", since some events we would have classified as SN may be just energetic outbursts. I thought we might see multiple SN happening on the same point in the sky, but the rate should be so low we wouldn't see them yet. I don't know if this type of event is already incorporated in the SN observation models.

What created this unusual space ribbon? Most assuredly, one of the most violent explosions ever witnessed by ancient humans. Back in the year 1006 AD, light reached Earth from a stellar explosion in the constellation of the Wolf (Lupus), creating a "guest star" in the sky that appeared brighter than Venus and lasted for over two years.

Anderer Artikel ... bitte nachsehen.

I am working on another comic series, also 12 pages long, entitled "Permanence". It's in the pre- production process already. The concept is now solid and the script is currently in production already. Yes, Permanence is the sequel of Supernova so you guys will see what the hell happened to the two after their uhm...
I will post updates on this project so I hope you guys stay (tuned) to my site. Get those markers and shoes ready.

Supernova was a drag. They canceled the Dance-off. Which was a shame I would've wiped the floor with my hare hare yukai!!! For some reason Mikuru, Itsuki and Yuki all had errands to run. So I was stuck with Kyon all day. Since I didn't have my photographer I only got one photo!!

Wow, looks like the boys will be busy in the "-ber" months. Aside from releasing their 4th Korean album and their 24th Japanese single, they will be participating in different concerts both in Korea and overseas. Seriously, do these guys still have time to rest? Although I'm happy to see them perform in numerous concerts, I still hope they're having enough rest. We wouldn't want them to get sick of fatigue or anything, right?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to these concerts. I wish to watch them live but I'm such an unfortunate kid this year so I'd have to kiss that wish goodbye. But I'm excited to see pictures and fancams of the boys plus read some fan accounts. If you happen to attend any of these concerts and you have any fan accounts, I hope you could share them to me (and to the other readers, too)! :D

P.S. DBSK, Super Junior, Big Bang, and SS501 will perform on the same stage at the 2008 MNET Korean Music Festival. Although they may not perform together in one number, the fact that they are on one concert excites me very much. Nothing... just a random thing that crossed my mind. Hahaha. =)
