The best way to deal with water damage in your home is to prevent it before it starts. This is not a difficult task. You just have to be willing to take the time to make a checklist of all the places where water comes into or leaves your house. Then you have to be willing to go through and check these places every so often to make sure they are kept in good repair. This small amount of time and bother will prevent flooding and water damage and the repairs to your home which will occur if any of these pipes, hoses, or connections were to spring a leak.

Start in the kitchen to check all the hoses, pipes, and connectors that pertain to running water. Look for any leaks or wetness on or around these things. Look at the pipes under the sink, the hoses from the dishwasher, and the line that runs water for the icemaker in your refrigerator. If there is any dampness on or around these things take the time to fix them right away. This will keep any issues from becoming a big problem.

The laundry room would be a good spot to move on to after the kitchen inspection has been dealt with. Make sure to check the hoses for the hot and cold water that runs to the washer. Again if there is any moisture collecting on or near these hoses replace or repair them right away. You should also inspect the drain pipe for the washer to be sure the water is draining properly and the pipe is not leaking anywhere. It is a good idea to put a liquid drain cleaner down the pipe when you do these checks to keep the drain pipe from having any clogging or backing up problems.

The bathroom is another room that needs to be checked for water damage. Check the pipes for the toilet, sink, and tub. Put a liquid drain cleaning solution down the sink, toilet, and tub drains to prevent any back up issues. Look at the tile on the floor and walls in the bathroom to see if there are any damaged tiles or bad grout. Fix any damage you find right away to prevent damage to the drywall or sub-floor. Make sure that each bathroom in your home is equipped with a ventilation fan. These fans will dissipate the moisture caused by the shower running. The extra humidity in a bathroom can end up causing mold if there is not enough ventilation.

Make sure that checking for wetness around all of your windows and doors is on the checklist. If there are any signs of moisture around the windows or doors dry it thoroughly and caulk the gaps or cracks that have let the wetness in. This can prevent drywall, structural, and mold damage to your home.

When all of these things have been checked and dealt with go down and check the basement for any leaks in the pipes or dampness on the cement walls. Take care of any problems right away. Keeping up with the checklist regularly will prevent water damage and the expensive repairs that come with it.

I made a plan but then my plan failed. I made another plan...that plan fell through. Now, there's no short day trip on the bike because it's raaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg. That's right. The old man bumped his head.

Because of the darkness that the clouds bring, I just may curl up in bed and read my book. I could knit...or even crochet. The aroma of the ham I put in the crockpot this morning is wafting through the air. All I need now is a big ol' pot of beans. All this on a rainy day. I tell ya, there's nothing like living in the south.

Something else that could be done today - My piano would love to be played. I got some new music from my piano teacher and it wouldn't hurt me to sit down and look at it. Beethoven could stand a gander, as well. Schubert, as well.

Have you ever met a more diverse person? Ham, a pot of beans and Beethoven. When did all those come together? To me, the image is funny. I'd bet Beethoven would love to sit down and eat ham and beans with me. However, I know he would not enjoy listening to me play his Sonata Pathetique. My rendering fits its nickname, for certain. But there's once consolation - Beethoven was deaf. He'd never hear it.

I promised random ramblings and you got them!

May your day be blessed by rain, Beethoven, your craft and a big ol' smoked ham...and maybe a book. =D

Well the long awaited touch screen BlackBerry storm was officially announced today, coming to the world soon from Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone. Woohoo, that means it's coming to my neck of the woods as well.

Verizon Wireless, Vodafone Group (NYSE:VOD)(LSE:VOD) and Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced that the BlackBerry(R) Storm(TM) will be available later this fall, exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers in the U.S. and Vodafone customers in Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Looks good doesn't it, and I'm not going to go down the iPhone comparison route here, because RIM included a cheesy video in the press release that took the cool factor right away from this news.

It started yesterday in the early morning. Wind was up to 30 something kts in no time. It slowly increased over the whole day, but we had no problems at all to keep the boats together. Queens Way Marina in Gib showed a totally different picture in the early evening hours. Cleats came off the concrete docks, ships banged into each other, in walls and quite a big swell came in.

By 0100 in the morning it started to become really crazy. Our boat was rocking and heeling as if we would be out at sea. The wind hammered into the rig and the hull and was just scary to sit down there. Well, actually we couldn't anyway because other boats went into trouble. Headsails unfurled itself in no time on three different boats, while the wind was gusting up to 60 kts. Some guy told me that is windspeed indicator even showed a max of over 70 kts.

Slimelines were ripped out of the bottom of the marina and we had to bring long lines across to another concrete pier. In the meantime everybody in the Marina was up to save boats, bring out more lines and try to get hold of ripped sails. Even mainsails came out of their bags.

Now you might want to say - bad seamanship - but most boats were tied up as you would expect it in a storm. The wind simply had such a power, you just couldn't do anything about it.

We already secured our boat with many lines yesterday. However the close proximity to the other boats next to us was scary as every boat was healing more or less. At some point for 3 hours or so, our stanchions were constantly below the towrail of the boat to our left. Just cm's and we would have been caught in there.

Well, we made it (without sleep) but we secured the boat. Nothing damaged except for some fenders we have to write off the books.

Exams will be on Sunday now. With no wind predicted. How crazy is that?

Ohh, before I forget. Another tanker went aground off Europa point. 31 people seem to be still on board. So, after The Flame (the wreck is almost gone), there is some new work for the next couple of month.

You all have fun and I will post some pictures of the chaos here next week.

HCM City (VNA) – Local businesses must draw lessons from the current financial crisis in the US and work out plans to curb any indirect effect on the Vietnamese economy, speakers at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City said on Oct. 9.

“Businesses should take a close look at their own situation and work out various scenarios,” said Nguyen Quang A, director of the Institute of Development Studies .

Despite the global financial crisis sparked by the US banking collapse, local companies are still in a position to increase profits, even in hard times.

However, Nguyen Thanh Tu Anh, deputy head of research for the US-based Fulbright programme in Vietnam , advised companies to prepare for difficult times ahead.

Tran Si Chuong, chairman of the property, investment consulting and engineering group ABBO, said companies should keep track of the latest information about the financial situation around the world.

He said companies should not be expanding now and instead should try to find “a hiding place to survive and cope with the storm”.

Participants at the seminar, held by Doanh Nhan Sai Gon (Sai Gon Business People), agreed that the country’s banking system should step up inspection of its credit operations in the wake of the banking collapse in the US and the “greed” that had enveloped many of the major players involved.

Vietnam ’s banking system, which also offers securities and real estate loans, albeit at a lower level, should draw lessons from the US crisis, they said.

The US banking crisis’ impact on the global financial system would lead to a reduction in Vietnamese exports, an important ingredient in the country’s GDP growth, speakers predicted.

Foreign direct investment could also fall, and disbursement for foreign-invested projects could be slow. Capital sources of investment funds would be drained as well, he said.

The volume of remittances from overseas Vietnamese will possibly fall because of the recession in the US and its impact on other economies.

A fall in exports and drop in foreign investment could lead to higher unemployment, several experts said.-

Last night I headed out to see some friend's play music at just about the time the rain started. By the time I reached the main road, the streets were all flooded. Once I reached the parking lot, I was really glad that I keep umbrellas in my car and used one for the first time since I put them in two years ago. It was raining that hard.

After getting lost and then turned around and finding the bar, I was there for about 20 minutes when the power went out plunging the entire city into darkness. It wasn't bad except that it was HOT inside. They lit candles and eventually the generators came on and later the power.

Of course, as I always do, I left my windows open at home and so everything in my living room was SOAKED. The sofas, the rug, whatever mysterious papers I left on the coffee table and are now smeared ink. There was a huge puddle in the middle of the floor. I had to leave all of the fans on high all night and today to dry everything out.

Now I see that we are between a tropical storm and a hurricane, so it is possible that there will be big wind and rains over the next couple of days. The power hardly ever goes out at my house, in fact, it hasn't even once this year so I'm not too worried about it. I have lots of candles, food, bottled water and imaginary friends to keep me company.

So it drops in a month according to engadget mobile. I heard it's not going to have 3G but Verizon's wireless network is fast enough supposedly. It has 1GB of onboard storage with a 8GB micro SD card bundled in. The main problem is that I'm not a fan of touch screens even though I haven't messed with them that much. Either way I always liked Blackberry's for some reason. It's going to be on Verizon but i'm sure people will get to jailbreakin' when it drops (not that I condone such activity haha.)

I'll be in the market for a new phone this June anyway. It's probably gonna be expensive as hell. Either way I'll be keeping an eye out for this new line of Blackberries in the future.

How timely this message is for me. Thank you Mr. Lucado.

Recently at church I had opportunity to speak and the message I shared was an encouragement to "embrace change". Now, it is apparent that word is for me just as much as it is anybody else ( I know this, I'm just stating the obvious). This morning it was brought to my attention that change is necessary and with that then I get to practice what I preached and "embrace change". Change is not always fun but often it is necessary, in fact, it is inevitable. There will always be something that changes. We do not always have to like it but as we embrace it, we will have the right attitude about it and therefore be able to gain the most benefit possible from the change.

I am glad that I have a friend in Jesus Christ that I (like Peter) can lean on and call out to for help when change is occuring and I don't know what to do or exactly how to handle things. And I am thankful that Jesus is a friend that lends the helping hand, lifts me up and does not allow me to drown in the storm of change.

Peace!

He is Waiting in the Midst of the Storm
by Max Lucado

Peter knows he is in trouble.

The winds roar down onto the Sea of Galilee like a hawk on a rat. Lightning zigzags across the black sky. The clouds vibrate with thunder. The rain taps, then pops, then slaps against the deck of the boat until everyone aboard is soaked and shaking. Ten-foot waves pick them up and slam them down again with bonejarring force.

These drenched men don't look like a team of apostles who are only a decade away from changing the world. And you can be sure of one thing. The one with the widest eyes is the one with the biggest biceps--Peter. He's seen these storms before. He's seen the wreckage and bloated bodies float to shore. He knows what the fury of wind and wave can do. And he knows that times like this are not times to make a name for yourself; they're times to get some help.

That is why, when he sees Jesus walking on the water toward the boat, he is the first to say, "Lord, if it's you ... tell me to come to you on the water." (Matthew 14:28)

He is aware of two facts: He's going down, and Jesus is staying up. And it doesn't take him too long to decide where he would rather be.

Perhaps a better interpretation of his request would be, "Jeeeeeeeesus. If that is you, then get me out of here!"

"Come on" is the invitation.

And Peter doesn't have to be told twice. It's not every day that you walk on water through waves that are taller than you are. But when faced with the alternative of sure death or possible life, Peter knows which one he wants.

The first few steps go well. But a few strides out onto the water, and he forgets to look to the One who got him there in the first place, and down he plunges.

Peter's response may lack class--it probably wouldn't get him on the cover of Gentleman's Quarterly or even Sports Illustrated--but it gets him out of some deep water:

"Help me!"

And since Peter would rather swallow pride than water, a hand comes through the rain and pulls him up.

The message is clear.

As long as Jesus is one of many options, he is no option. As long as you can carry your burdens alone, you don't need a burden bearer. As long as your situation brings you no grief, you will receive no comfort. And as long as you can take him or leave him, you might as well leave him, because he won't be taken half-heartedly.

But when you mourn, when you get to the point of sorrow for your sins, when you admit that you have no other option but to cast all your cares on him, and when there is truly no other name that you can call, then cast all your cares on him, for he is waiting in the midst of the storm.

If you are checking blogs and pages about new mobile devices most probably you have noticed that a new and cool device from Blackberry will be released soon. I’m talking about BlackBerry 9500 a.k.a. Storm.

The device has a touch screen and doesn’t have a typical for BlackBerry hardware QWERTY keyboard. It looks like iPhone 3G has one more business phone competitor, this time with touch screen as well. What’s interesting Blackberry has already prepared Storm downloadable software simulator.

I attended the Wireless Tech Forum Meeting today at The Ashford Club, Atlanta. Today’s topic

I attended the Wireless Tech Forum Meeting today at The Ashford Club, Atlanta. Today's topic was Wireless Applications and Mobile Media. This is a new Special Interest Group within the Wireless Tech Forum and organizers have done a great job as usual of creating format and content for this SIG. Steve Bachman heads up the WAMM SIG along with co-chairs Richard Yates and Ed Pimentel.

Today we had an excellent first session on mobile media with a great presentation by Jerry Rocha, the Sr Director of Mobile Research at Nielsen Mobile (formerly Telephia). Jerry presented some great information on patterns, trends, usage stats on mobile media and mobile apps. Here are some highlights from the session :

Among major apps on the mobile data gravy train are SMS, mobile apps and mobile internet. We have to see which one comes out ahead in terms of user adoption but all are growing with heady growth rates compared to where they were before (of course we are only talking US market in this entire discussion, I know mobile data in Europe and Asia is a totally different ballgame and growth pattern).

Number Crunching :

If we include all mobile data, it is growing at rate of 28%. In Europe, SMS was big but with falling rates of SMS, carriers are pushing MMS which commands higher revenues. There were 260 million mobile customers in USA at end of Q2, 2008. Of which 56 million were downloading mobile apps. 15 million customers have seem video on mobile - small percent of mobile population but growing. Of the 260 million mobile customers in USA, 102 million have access to the mobile internet. 77% of mobile subscribers can get SMS today. Mobile internet is now a 1.2 billion dollar industry. 43 million customers in USA use mobile internet regularly now.

Trends :

Nielsen Mobile has access to 80,000 customers bills for market survey and this is the primary source of market research for Nielsen Mobile.

Among data apps, audio is a big killer app. Games was popular but there is decline in mobile gaming. Many fringe mobile gaming firms are going out of business with big ones like Glu Mobile and Electronic Arts taking majority of market share in mobile gaming. Ringtones are powerful but see slower traction now.

Mobile apps have see a huge uptick this year - one reason is the iPhone and the awareness it created about mobile apps in general.

From a strategy perspective, media firms like CNN, ESPN and others have pushed mobile media in spite of lack of enough support from carriers. Media firms are pushing off-deck content.

Mobile Internet :

Mobile portals are most heavily visited area. Email is second most popular with 27.4 million users (Nielsen is not including POP3 email accounts). Among sites visited most, the order is : Yahoo (22.3 million users), Google (18.9 million), MSN (14.4 million), AOL (12.6 million), Weather Channel, CNN, FOX, Apple, Turner in that order.

iPhone has been a game changing device for mobile internet with each firm now forced to follow a three pronged internet strategy : Regular website, Mobile website and iPhone-optimized website. Many firms have device detection and render appropriate website based on source of access.

Mobile Apps :

These have seen a giant increase since Q1 of this year. Most popular apps are related to LBS (Location-Based Services) - an area for which we in CellStrat have written extensively and have a nice white paper on our company website (www.cellstrat.com). Top 10 mobile apps are (in declining order of popularity) :- Verizon Navigator, Sprint Navigator, AT&T Navigator, Wireless Synch Email, TeleNav GPS Navigator, Sprint Family Locator, MySpace Mobile, Mobile Email, MapQuest Mobile and XM Radio Mobile.

Lot of firms like Nokia are buying up firms which have LBS offerings or technology.

Some of the big publishers of mobile apps are : TeleNav Mobile, Networks in Motion, Intellisync, WaveMarket, MySpace Mobile, AutoDesk etc.

It seems Location tracking is an app whic commands $5 per month revenue relatively easily. Same cannot be said for some of the other mobile apps though.

The top mobile app areas in order of popularity are (most popular first) :- LBS (69% of mobile apps are related to this), PIM Tools, Weather, Music, Maps or Directions etc.

iPhone :

This has shaken the mobile world as we report countless times now. Apple iPhone now as 1% of USA market share and 3.7% of AT&T mobile phones are iPhones. By Q3, Apple had sold 10 million iPhones worldwide easily hitting its goal of 10 million iPhones in first year.

iPhone AppStore is a breakthrough concept and has opened up the mobile application ecosystem to developers like never before. In the 4 months since its launch, iPhone AppStore has seen 100 million downloads of mobile apps, total number of mobile apps on iPhone available now exceeds 3000 apps.

iPhone dominates every category of mobile web usage.

Some cool iPhone killers like BlackBerry Bold, Storm and Google G1 are out or coming out soon and we will have to see how well they do against iPhone. One reason for huge app success on iPhone is its excellent developer support and ecosystem eg the iTunes store. Nokia scores well too on this front with its Symbian platform.

iPhone users skew towards male with 67% iPhone users being males and 33% females although in overall mobile world, 52% of mobile customers are females.

Mobile Advertising :

This one pays for it all.

Interestingly Atlanta is No 3 in mobile video usage (interesting..never thought Atlanta was that big on mobile web adoption). Among mobile email, gmail and yahoo email dominate.

Nielsen has tools to scrap 300 websites every 15 minutes and categorizes them for ad purposes. It turns out Eletronic Arts and Dunkin Donuts are bigger advertisers in mobile internet. On ESPN Mobile, Electronic Arts is the biggest advertiser.

This shot was taken earlier this year when a huge swell was hitting the southwest. Redgate is a beautiful little beach just south of Margaret River and cops the swell when its in. A few brave surfers were out lapping it up!

If any of you washingtonians are like me, you’re most likely mired in the bog of epic failure

If any of you washingtonians are like me, you're most likely mired in the bog of epic failure that has become Washington sports. After our beloved Seahawks were, for all intents and purposes, bent over a rail last Sunday I reached out for professional help.

I called a crisis hotline in hopes of lifting my spirits and finding a light at the end of the tunnel or at least a silver lining to the dark clouds. The following is an actual conversation that happened between Beatrix and I that occured at 3 am last tuesday.

Beatrix: Crisis Hotline. Where we're here because we care. This is Beatrix, how can I help you tonight.
Heath: I...I need some help. I...can't breathe...
Beatrix: It's ok sir, I'm here to help. What's your name?
Heath: Heath...I'm from Seattle.
Beatrix: Hi Heath, I'm from Boston. Now what seems to be the problem?
Heath: My teams...all of them...they...terrible. I think I'm going to jump out a window!
Beatrix: Well don't do that! I mean there has to be one good team. What about baseball, we have the Sox.
Heath: The Mariners? They just lost 101 games this season...
Beatrix: Oh...Well what about the Seahawks? They just went to a superbowl didn't they? Boston loves the Patriots, surely Seattle is the same way!
Heath: They're 1-4 and just lost 42-6 to the Giants.
Beatrix: Hmmm....Oh I know! College football! Boston College almost went to the big dance last year and the people are happier than ever.
Heath: OH...we have the University of Washington Huskies...still haven't won a game...
Beatrix: Is that the only school?
Heath: Well no...the Cougars won one game against Portland state, but lost two quarterbacks to spinal injuries.
Beatrix:Portland has a college?!
Heath: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
Beatrix: Sorry...What about Basketball? We won the NBA title here with one of your players.
Heath: Oklahoma stole our team and ownership sold them out. We do have the WNBA Seattle Storm though...
Beatrix: WNBA dosen't count....
Heath: *Hysterical sobbing followed by a window squeaking, a scream and a dull thump*
Beatrix: Heath? Heath....? Oh well Seattle dosen't have any real fans anyway.
