Surfing YouTube awhile back I stumbled apon some amazing speed painting examples. I just had to find out how it was done and try one out my self. I was reading a Steven King book at the time, so I thought why not try out painting Steve. The end result doesn't really look like Mr King, probably because I wasn't concentrating on the painting but rather the technical aspect of it. Well maby that's an excuse, I have never been any good at drawing likeness. In any case it was a fun project and will probably do another in the future.

Here's tonight's sketch. I've been away this weekend with my wife and son. We went to the Gold Coast and had a great time. My son was a little unwell, but his fun side more than made up for that fact. I didn't manage to get any art done whilst I was away, and I was itching to have a play when I got bck, this is what came out of me. I like this speed painting stuff, I'll hopefully get to more of it in coming posts. Feel free to let me know what you think.

I know how to put tons of detail into an image and refine everything to a slick and shiny finish.  pretty, painfully tight detail is easy - artfully using bold brushstrokes and quick splashes of color is a challenge.  So one of my current goals is to loosen up my execution and imply detail with a few choice strokes and let the viewer fill in the rest.  I'm comfortable with where I am in terms of producing a finished product, but I think my quick sketching and speed painting skills need to be brought up a couple levels. 

So here is my first speed painting in... a long time.  It took about 15 minutes.  It's not perfect, it's not a brilliant design, and it doesn't yet have the dynamism that I'm looking for, but it's a start.

L-am descoperit accidental, cand cautam pe Youtube despre arta digitala in Photoshop. Am ramas perplex cand am vazut ce stie sa faca si cat de talentat este, si inca nu pot sa ma abtin sa nu pun aceeasi intrebare de fiecare data cand ii revad filmele: "dar ... Cum e posibil?"

El este cel care a inventat conceptul de "Speed Painting", in momentul in care s-a inregistrat cu o camera de filmat in timp ce lucra la un proiect, iar apoi a prezentat filmul la viteza marita pe un fundal sonor:

No es que tenga especial predilección por las paredes ni por los grafitis, pero no sé por qué, recordé la introducción de una película de Jimi Hendrix en la que un artista hacía un retrato del mítico guitarrista en unos segundos dando pincelazos a dos manos. Antes de dedicarme a digitalizar la copia VHS que tengo por ahí (la "piratería" nos es un invento nuevo) me pasé por Youtube y "voilà", trabajo hecho, allí estaba la introducción de "Jimi plays Monterey" y el retrato hecho por Denny Dent al ritmo de la música de Jimi Hendrix. Los "speed pinting" son muy populares en Youtube (en los que se ve de modo acelerado el proceso de creación de ilustraciones fotorrealistas mediante programas informáticos como el Photoshop) pero en este caso se trata de un "real speed painting". Este tipo era capaz de hacerle un retrato al policía mientras le ponía la multa*...

* Lo suyo no era arte callejero: preparaba un espectaculo para realizar sus obras (música, coreografía, pinturas) aunque luego, como se puede imaginar uno después de ver el video, se dejaba llevar por la improvisación.

Bien, pues por lo visto el artista más conocido se llama Nico Di Mattia, nacido en Argentina, con unos trabajos realmente impresionantes, es conocido por todo el mundo de este arte. Curiosamente, el artista tiene un blog con el mismo diseño que este. Todos sus trabajos son una obra de arte excepcional, llevando el uso del Photoshop a cotas soñadas por la gran mayoría, pero de entre sus obras destaco a Ghost Wisperer, Bumblebee y Ironman. Algunos retratos son sencillamente impresionantes.
