Some time back I wrote about songbird. The Mozilla media player. I also briefly mentioned the ability to add extensions just like Firefox. Well as it turns out I have been addicted to the player and have already compiled a list of my favorite extensions for Songbird.

1. AlbumApplet

The album applet allows you to browse your songs library by means of album art. Its similar to the Cover Flow animation of iTunes and iPod Touch fame. Don't have album art for all of your albums? No problems the extension will get it for you and then save the requried information along with your media!

2. MinimizeToTray

Minimizes Songbird into the system tray. It also displays a notification when a new song is played. Like it very very much. Its a port of the MinimizeToTray extension for Firefox and Thunder bird. Linux users can try the FireTray extension.

3. Attack of the Clones

This extension adds another media flow to songbird that displays duplicate files in your media library, that way you can find them and remove them to reclaim some disk space. You can also click the “Kill the Clones!” button to indiscriminately delete the duplicates.

4. GhostBusters

Actually a follow up of the above extension that displays broken or non existent tracks in your library. Again a good one for media management.

5. Now Playing List

This addon adds a now playing list that gives you the ability to add songs to the queue. A good one for those with large libraries and those who hate to make playlists like me!

6. YouPlayer

This is an addon for those of you who like to watch videos on video websites like YouTube. The extension opens up a nice window where you can watch and download videos from the web. You can drag a link to a browser window or right-click it and open in a new tab. You can add/drag other links, thus the playlist will work as a bookmarker.

7. Metrics Media Page

It allows you to visualize your library. You can see your collection in living colour. Graph different properties on pie and bar charts to discover the anatomy of your collection. See how long a playlist is, or how much disk space it takes up. Look at how your music collection has developed over time.Get It!

8. Background

This will allow you to change songbird's background with an image or a color and make other changes to UI elements. Looks very cool. You can use any image to style up your bird!

This extension allows you to change Songbird's window title to whatever you want, such as the current song being played, make track information scroll on your taskbar and act as a track change notifier.

Ever wondered whether your favorite WMP or iTunes will get better? Well, it just did. Enter Songbird!!!

Actually, Songbird has been around for awhile - even though still in alpha - it is quite robust and rarely crashes.

Well, whats so great about it. For starters, its open-source - just like Firefox - and is developed by those same geeks who gave you Winamp. Its platform-independent and supports umpteen file formats. So much for the credentials. Lets see what it can actually do.

The feel is more like iTunes and hence the Learning Curve for iPod freaks will actually be shorter - ya folks, it does support your iPod. Now, the best ever feature - the Search Engine. Songbird uses custom Google search algorithm to retrieve various media files from the internet. Its very good in avoiding broken links and providing you with multiple sources for the same song. Awesome isn't it!!!

Its not all. Like Firefox, Songbird supports tabbed browsing and - hold your breath - SKINS!!! Ya, unlike the sucker of the skins provided by Winamp, Songbird's "Feathers" are truly awesome and immensely likable.

Add to that, the regular features for any Music Player - library, playlists etc, Songbird beats all other players hands down.

I was plesently suprised with the new release as I had tryed Songbird a few times in the last few months but never had it really been what I would call really usable. 0.6.1 though seems very good and I am very happy with it so far. The key thing that surprised me most was the fact that it found my Zune and my Zune syncs WIRELESSLY. This was of course originally setup in the Zune software but I think its amasing that there is actually support for the Zune in Songbird that is really some awesome support there.

It seems that every time I try it out though the Media Flow or whatever its called never is working for me but hey its still Alpha so I am not guna complain to much since the library works wonderfully (if you like an iTunes style library which I really don't like to much but I can deal with it).

Overall I think Songbird still looks like it could take a sizable chunck of the Music Player market from other players (namely iTunes) and finally bring an Amarok quality Media player to windows (addons and cool features included), now if only there was a MoodBar?

skreemr zeigt die ergebnisse schön geordnet und sucht nach den ID3-tags des liedes, und nicht nur nach schlagwörtern der internetseiten auf denen sie verfügbar sind. damit es noch ein wenig legaler wird, gibt es zusätzlich links zu erwerbsseiten wie amazon. ich empfehle diese möglichkeit zu nutzen. wer mumm hat und sich auf dünnem eis bewegen will, kann jedoch direkt das lied runterladen.

desweiteren empfehle ich übrigens das programm songbird. das ist ein mediaplayer mit integriertem browser, basierend auf der mozilla engine. dieser hat ebenfalls direkt eine skreemrsuche integriert  und sieht dazu noch ziemlich schick aus.

Web Browsing

Let’s face it, the only important word to say here is "Firefox". If you are still using internet explorer, I feel sorry for you. I stuck with internet explorer for way too long because I liked to be able to sync my 1000s of bookmarks (That’s right, I said 1000s) between all my computers. This was particularly useful for managing uni research between my laptop and desktop. But then I discovered Google Bookmarks Sync and made the switch. Now I have never looked back. This is because Firefox is so customisable. There are so many different add-ons available for Firefox that make it so much more of a superior browser. This is what this part of the blog is about. Not the security, speed or other similar (often technical) parts of Firefox that non-nerds find boring, but rather the various add-ons I have come to love and use often in Firefox making me such a fan of this lovely piece of software.

I will start with bookmark syncing. While Google Bookmark Sync is no longer supported by Google and doesn't function in Firefox 3, there is a new kid on the block. "Weave" is its name. It is currently in rapid development with version 0.2 being the latest. It lets you create an account and with the add-on on each Firefox install, sync things like bookmarks, saved passwords and all sorts of wonderful things. Be aware, it’s still early days and some features don't work. But if you just want to sync your lovely bookmarks, then it is a go.

The next add-on I love will be a double combo. "Adblock Plus" and "NoScript" when used together will not only save you a headache in terms of keeping the viruses at bay but also keeping most of the ads of your screen.  That means I don't see those stupid flash ads, pictures and what not that cover MySpace, Facebook and any other webpage I come across. Adblock Plus accomplishes this in a very simple fashion that requires no user intervention. Install and forget. NoScript is a little more technical so may require a little more technical knowledge. But basically it prevents webpage loading java, flash and other things that while often very useful, can also be a security risk. When you visit a page for the first time, you will have to whitelist the site which is very easy, but this allows only the site you want to visit to load, whilst keeping the code of non related stuff such as ads, tracking material, or even virus from loading. As I said, it's a bit more hands on, but well worth it.

The next one is "PicLens". This little wonder I only recently discovered but what it allows is viewing pictures of certain sites (Google image search, Facebook, MySpace etc) in a very cool sliding wall style in which they can be viewed at a much faster speed, and allows zooming into selected pictures. Google for it and check out the website for pictures as they will show you exactly how cool this add-on is in ways I can’t describe.

Finally, the last add-on that gets a lot of use is "Zotero". I'll be honest and say that I am still learning to fully use this one, but it is proving to be very helpful. If you’re a student and have ever had to look over lots of articles on journal databases and sites for research, then this add-on will help organise it all. You add pages that you’re looking at to Zotero, then can tag it, sort it and leave comments for each. Perfect for managing the large number of journal articles that I come across and need to store for later use when writing the assignment.

Socialising

With so many Messaging clients out there (MSN, Yahoo, AIM etc) and some users like myself using multiple of these, it is great to have them in one place. To be able to chat in one piece of software to all my contacts over the various networks and also have it sync with the actual servers. Now I know there are a few competitors in this area, but one also adds the ability to work with Facebook, MySpace, twitter and link in with any email address you have (hotmail, Gmail, pop3 etc). The software I am talking about is "Digsby" and is very still under constant development. But it is functioning well on my computer and has completely replaced all the other chat clients I used. Having the ability to draw so much together (time saving) is what the internet revolution is all about.

Media

Software for viewing and playing music files, videos and what not on your computer is a very saturated area. Most people use iTunes, but frankly I am not a fan of either iTunes or apple in general (issue for another day). I currently use windows media player for my extremely large collection of music files. The reasoning is based on performance with the library and searching, and it plays the wma files I have. While it may not be perfect, it does the job. However this is not a recommendation for WMP. One piece of software I am keeping a close eye on is "Songbird". This media player is being created to compete directly with iTunes. But where it differs is that it is linked to Mozilla, and is designed to allow for the exact same sort of add-on ability that I love in Firefox. It is also looking to integrate the web with the media player. Something that the competition in my opinion does not do well, if at all. The current version available has a few problems, but the developers are extremely active, and the coming version 0.7 in my opinion will have brought the software to the point that it can replace windows media player for my audio pleasure. Now for videos I use one piece of software. "VLC" is a fantastic piece of software that to date has played every video file I have put into it. DVDs and what not all get put through this software and it does the job in excellent picture quality.

Everyday

Now for everyday software, I thought I would touch on two things. Uni and communication/personal life organising. For any uni student, referencing can be a bitch. It is something that is required to a very high degree, and can take a lot of time to not only learn but get right every time you add a quote of paraphrase in an assignment. That is why I use "Endnote". Luckily my uni has this available to students free of charge, but it is an absolute life saver. I add any piece of material that I come across in research, and then when it comes time to cite it in word, a selection of the book or material in endnote, a quick shortcut combo and it adds it in perfect format. It will also add the end text citation if it isn't there already (again, in perfect formatting). While it does take some configuring, the end result is that referencing is done in the correct formatting every time and it speeds up the process considerably.

The last pieces of software I have come to rely on are "Thunderbird" and "Sunbird". Thunderbird is an email application equivalent (but better) to such software as outlook express, and sunbird is an application that serves as a calendar. With all my many email accounts in thunderbird, and many calendars for both work and pleasure in sunbird, it is easy and even pleasurable to manage my communication and schedule. The real advantage of these software is that they are from the guys that make Firefox, Mozilla, which means they have also been made to incorporate the add-ons. The only one I will mention is "Zindus" for thunderbird. This allows syncing your contacts to Gmail and in my case, allows me to have almost the same install of thunderbird on two computers complete with all emails for the same accounts being downloaded on both (thunderbird settings here) and contacts being updated across the board (Zindus here).

While I have gone over quite a few pieces of software with what in my view are many benefits for their use. The best part about all of them is they are all free (Except Endnote). In this day and age, free software is readily available and in many cases, far outperforms the competition that charge money. However I will get back to the core of what these pieces of software do for me. They all allow for a much richer and enjoyable web experience and they all integrate everything together much more nicely. Hopefully you have come across some new software that you may consider using, and feel free to leave comments as to any that you use.

When I realized that Apple software doesn't work very well on a windows OS, and all microsoft programs are ridiculously slow, I began googling for alternatives to iTunes. Originally I discovered Foobar2000, and decided that I didn't like it. Today I discovered something incredible.

SONGBIRD 0.6

This is being created in cahoots with Mozilla, pretty much the greatest software developers/perfectors of all time. Songbird is still in development (hence 0.6), but it's making good progress. At the moment it's a open-source music managing and playing program that supports themes, add-ons, and even web-browsing (think Winamp web browser), music downloading, FLAC support, and iPod/MP3 player support.

I'm not making it my replacement-iTunes just yet, because it's missing some very key features that aren't done being made yet (again hence 0.6). They still need CD ripping, CD burning, podcast support, and watch folders (something that iTunes has yet to pick up on). Then I'll say bye bye to iTunes for good.

Until then, I'm very mad that I found out about this software while it's still in development. The waiting is going to kill me. This is going to rock so much.

Se à primeira vista o Songbird parece estranho, à segunda, terceira e quarta também. Demora um pouco para se acostumar com o estilão Firefox de ser do Songbird. Como o projeto deriva de um dos melhores navegadores da atualidade, a navegação está presente, e é um dos pontos fortes do programa: é possível abrir qualquer página dentro dele, embora os links padrões sugiram que o ideal é focar-se em música. A navegação é idêntica à do Firefox - possui até abas. Isso vai de encontro com a proposta do Songbird: ser o primeiro “web player”, ou seja, um player de áudio que não se restrinja ao conteúdo que existe no HD, mas que vá além, que use a web como fonte de músicas.

Apesar do programa ser novinho, e sequer ter chegado à primeira versão estável (está na 0.6), já existe uma ampla gama de plugins, ou extensões, e temas, tudo disponível no site oficial. Quem já é familiarizado com o Firefox, não terá dificuldades em manejar extensões e temas. É tudo igual, sem tirar, nem pôr.

Ainda falando sobre extensões, existem algumas legais, como a Media Flow, uma cópia meio piorada do bacanudo cover flow, da Apple, mostrando as capas dos álbuns horizontalmente (imagem). Há extensões para quase tudo, inclusive outros formatos de áudio, como *.wma e QuickTime, sem falar em suporte para iPod, mudanças estéticas, métodos de organização de faixas, dentre outros. Temas também existem, embora eles sejam bem limitados e fracos até o momento - o mais legal é um que simula o iTunes.

A usabilidade e a qualidade sonora estão dentro do aceitável - levando em conta que, particularmente, não sou muito rigoroso com essas coisas. O problema-mor, todavia, é o consumo de memória, algo que, a julgar pelos softwares que conhecemos concebidos nesta linguagem, deve ser algum problema congênito da XUL. O programa consome, fácil, fácil, 70 MB de memória, algo meio exagerado em se tratando de um player, por mais completo que ele seja. A título de exemplo, o Windows Media Player 11, tocando uma música, fica na casa dos 30 MB, e se é pra chutar o pau da barraca, o foobar 2000 raramente passa dos 5 MB.

Segundo os desenvolvedores do Songbird, melhorias significativas no fator desempenho foram realizadas na versão 0.6. Pelo visto, precisarão trabalhar muito ainda para que o Songbird consiga algum espaço no disputado mercado de players de áudio para Windows… Se quiser testar, e ver a quantas anda o Songbird, clique aqui e baixa a vesão 0.6.1 (14,2 MB).

I read this issue with both delight and a bit of sadness knowing that the Thunderbolts are turned over to a new creative team next month. The Warren Ellis and Mike Deodato run has been one hell of a ride, so I expected some big things from their final issue. Unfortunately, I couldn't help but feel let down as everything had a bit of a rushed feel to it. That said, this is still one of the best books to come out during what has been an extremely solid month.

The conclusion of the Caged Angels arc is, as expected, centered around the chaos that has gripped Thunderbolts Mountain for the last few months. The bulk of the issue is all about action. Moonstone confronts Doc Samson and Robbie "Penance" Baldwin while Norman Osborne, still running around as the Green Goblin, goes toe to toe with Songbird. Oddly enough, Swordsman, Radioactive Man, and Venom are nowhere to be found during all of this. Also, a certain team member is back on his feet and ready for some target practice. This all would have been excellent if there was one more issue to deal with the aftermath, but instead it leads to a tidy conclusion that comes about a bit too easily.

I really enjoyed what was here, but there is no escaping the feeling that things were rushed to a conclusion so the book could get on with its (almost) obligatory Secret Invasion tie-in. Also, while I understand why some of the team was missing from this final issue due to injuries and whatnot, it would have been welcome to have at least seen them at some point.

As expected, Warren Ellis is in fine form. The banter and taunting throughout the book is incredibly entertaining and hilariously dark. Ellis makes sure to give each character (the ones that are used anyway), a chance to shine. Also, while I am disappointed the book feels so rushed, the way Ellis reigns in the chaos is clever, amusing, and a great example of how to use a character. High marks all around, I just wish Ellis had another issue to work with.

I have loved Mike Deodato's work on this series, but the rushed feel of the story carries over into the artwork. The action scenes are suitably brutal and the powers on display look impressive, but it seems as though some aspects of the art are missing a layer of polish. The level of detail I've come to expect isn't there at times and, while it doesn't hurt my overall enjoyment of his work, is noticeable. Also, I can't help but mention that for some reason Robbie Baldwin looks exactly like a bald Ed Norton this issue - which is odd considering he hasn't looked that way until now.

Thunderbolts #121 is a good read that is a disappointment only when considering the great things that have come before it. The story and artwork feels rushed and the absence of half the roster is a bit annoying. Don't let that deter you though - this is still one of the best books on the shelf this week. Warren Ellis' run has been a must read for those who're into the darker side of the Marvel Universe. If you missed out, be sure to pick up the trades. So long Warren Ellis and Mike Deodato Jr., the Thunderbolts won't be the same without you. (Grade B+)

Eva Marie Cassidy was born on February 2nd, 1963. Music was introduced to Eva at an early age by her father, Hugh - who surrounded her with the voices of Pete Seeger, Buffy St. Marie and Ray Charles. He taught Eva how to play the guitar and she learned to accompany herself and her siblings (Anette, Margret and Dan) in a family music group.

As a teenager, Eva sang with friends in several bands and groomed her musical talents and performance skills. By the early 1990s she was doing studio work, performing with her friends - and then recorded "The Other Side" with Chuck Brown. Eva's career turned a corner that would lead her to pursue more solo work. She developed a repertoire of "great" songs that inspired her, and would later be the reason we all remember her - not for songs she wrote, but for songs that she interpreted and made her own.

Eva's voice was recorded at many of her performances at local Annapolis and Washington DC venues, and at studio sessions - little did we all know that this was a miracle. Eva's young life was cut short on November 2, 1996, by cancer. She was surrounded by music her entire life - now she surrounds our lives with her music.

Y para empezar con buen pie, hoy recomiendo "Songbird", que es un reproductor multimedia basado en VLC y escrito sobre la plataforma XULRunner de Mozilla, lo que lo hace multiplataforma y open source.

¿Qué tiene de novedoso? Pues este reproductor es lo que se podría definir como un reproductor social. Incorpora un navegador web que te permite buscar información sobre tus artistas favoritos y sobre la canción que estás escuchando, artículos destacados de varios blogs sobre música, un buscador de música mediante el cual puedes escuchar aquello que buscas mediante streaming o descarga, un gestor de extensiones, muy similar al del Firefox, para ampliar las funciones del reproductor. Soporte para sincronización de dispositivos como los iPods. Y, lo que es más importante en un reproductor de estas características, una excelente Biblioteca de medios personalizable. Entre otras funciones muchas funciones...

A pesar de no ser un producto completo aún, Songbird evoluciona versión a versión, incorporando novedades y mejorando su rendimiento.

Is anyone else having playback problems with iTunes? Do a search on Google, and you'll find the answer to be "Hell YEAH!" I'm a big supporter of Apple products and services, but I'm also a fan of options in all facets of my life, especially with media. It all started a few months back while reading an article in Rolling Stone about someone (or someones..) who had become fed up with the poor audio quality of Beatles CD's and decided to rip FLAC files to their computer from their collection of pristine Beatles vinyl.

To make a very long story short, they put the files on the internet so other people could get them (search "Purple Chick Megaupload") and I went after it. I didn't know what a FLAC file was at the time, but I did know iTunes wouldn't play it, so I had to find something that would. In enters Songbird, an open-source media players from some of the guys who made Winamp and the Yahoo Music Engine. It not only handles FLAC files but also MP3 (of course), AAC, WMA, AIFF, MIDI, Apple Lossless, yadda yadda plus files with that pesky DRM crap. And the really great advantage is that since it's open-source, it's cross platform and developer friendly (not to mention free of course) and there are a plethora of extensions you can download to make it even cooler.

There's an extension to display your album art much in the same way iTunes Cover Flow does, you can scrobble your tracks to Last.fm (if your cool like me) and you can even download an extension that imports your entire iTunes library into Songbird. It doesn't play video, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

It's also visually customizable, with a variety of great skins. You can even make it look exacltly like iTunes if you so choose. There's a built in web browser, eMusic compatibility (via another extension) and you can even search for DRM-free MP3's with the SkreemR shortcut/bookmark on the sidebar.

Songbird is a great program for open-source purists and the anti-corprate big business haters out there who would rather throw their grandma in front of a train than download anything from Apple or Microsoft. (I love my grandma dearly and always protect her from trains, but a small part of me is with you.) It also seems to correct the skipping problem a lot of my tracks seem to be having in iTunes as of late. (The point at meant to get to in the opening.)

Check it out, (most of you probably have) if you hate it, its not like you paid for it.

Desde siempre he luchado y luchado por encontrar un reproductor de medios que realmente me satisfaga, probé iTunes y se volvió demasiado lento, probé Winamp y simplemente no alcanzaba el estándar. Hace mucho tiempo, recuerdo, intenté este nuevo reproductor del que todo mundo hablaba, se llamaba Songbird, y aunque era bonito tenía varios problemas que fundamentalmente me ofuscaban:

1. No se mostraba lo que estaba escuchando en el Messenger (Sí, tengo una personalidad un poco vouyerista)
2. No había soporte para las carátulas del álbum. (Aparentemente esto es algo un poco difícil de conseguir)
3. El sistema de la librería de medios era un poco… tonto.

Pero, hace poco me dije: “Ya me aburrió Winamp”, ¿qué debería de hacer?, en eso recordé a Songbird y decidí probarlo. Afortunadamente ya superaron los tres problemas de arriba y tiene una interfaz considerablemente mejorada. Algo que es importante hacer notar es que todo funciona como Add-ons, quien ha usado Firefox no tiene problemas con esto, simplemente es genial, vale la pena probarlo, es más rápido que iTunes pero con interfaz mejor que la de Winamp.

Todos los que me conocen saben de mi obdiseción por siempre pasar canciones raras de esas bandas que creo que solamente yo conozco, este servicio es perfecto para mi entonces, básicamente es para compartir canciones, se pueden poner tags, descargar y hasta se ve todo como un histográma. Podría pasarme horas y horas escribiendo sobre las bondades del nuevo firefox, pero la verdad es que es simplemente genial, infinitamente más rápido y mucho más visual, la nueva barra de navegación es tan inteligente que me abruma un poco y la integración con los feeds de RSS es simplemente genial. Pero en lugar de hablar de las bondades del nuevo Firefox quisiera concentrarme en varias extensiones que he estado probando últimamente y que creo que valen la pena.

Desde que empecé a trabajar me encontré con el problema de poder ver tranquilamente en mi casa los links que descubría en la oficina, probé incontables soluciones desde hacer correos a mi mismo con estos links hasta usar Google Notebook. Pero luego descubrí Read it Later. ¿Qué hace? Mantiene un feed de RSS en sus servidores mágicos lo cual sincroniza una lista de links que quiero leer luego, esa lista la puedo generar desde cualquier link, desde google reader hasta un link genérico en una búsqueda de google. ¿La privacidad?, todo funciona totalmente con password, así que no hay que preocuparse.

Esto lo descubrí desde que accidentalmente instalaron Opera en una de las computadoras de la oficina una lista de links que recurrentemente visito y que quisiera tener a la mano, con pequeños thumnails que me dejan ver de lejos lo que pasa. En mi lista tengo: Twitter, Greader, Gmail, Facebook, este blog, los stats de wordpress, box.net, photobucket y Tumblr, ¿qué puedo decir? soy adicto a todos esos servicios.

Non dimentichiamo inoltre che si tratta di un player open source, e il suo scopo principale vuole essere quello di diventare una piattaforma Web-based per il download e l'acquisto di musica da Internet. Il nemico principale, naturalmente, il software proprietario: iTunes. Spiega il leader del progetto Rob Lord: "Immaginate come sarebbe la vostra esperienza con il Web se Internet Explorer si connettesse esclusivamente a microsoft.com, iTunes fa esattamente questo, costringendo la gente ad acquistare la propria musica nello stesso negozio. Per quale motivo non dovreste essere liberi di acquistare la vostra musica bluegrass in un posto e la trance in un altro?".
Per chi respinge il monopolio delle grandi aziende come Microsoft e Apple, Songbird rappresenta un'interessante novità, non solo sul piano etico ma anche su quello pratico: infatti, come Firefox, è personalizzabile tramite estensioni e numerose skin, chiamate "feathers" (piume) e sul piano dell'usabilità e della produttività, pur essendo solo alla versione 0.6, ha poco da invidiare ad iTunes. Dalla realase attuale, inoltre ha migliorato di molto la memoria e la velocità.

Ornai uso Songbird da mesi e non mi sono mai trovato male. Per chi inoltre non rinuncia ad iTunes per la gestione del proprio iPod: TRANQUILLI! Songbird offre un'estensione che consente di gestire in maniera ottimale il proprio iPod con questo piccolo player open soruce (lo uso anch'io con il mio iPod di seconda generazione).

Nella speranza di avervi incuriositi, vi invito a provare questo interessantissimo player che ci offrirà sicuramente ottime sorprese in futuro. Dubito che riuscirete più a farne a meno.

Dando un breve repaso a los productos que ofrece mozilla encontramos los siguientes:

Mozilla Lightning o Lightning es una extensión para el cliente de correo Mozilla Thunderbird que permite integrar al programa funciones de agenda, lista de tareas y calendario con alarmas.

Mozilla Flock o Flock es un navegador para la web social, Flock cuenta con herramientas tales de manejo de Blogs, manejo de feeds (RSS, Atom), páginas favoritas integradas en del.icio.us y Flickr, o la posibilidad de compartir fotografías.

Mozilla Camino o Camino es el navegador sólo para Mac OS X. Recomendado por c|Net por delante de Safari por sus características avanzadas de configuración de privacidad y seguridad.

No significa que no crea en la belleza de las imágenes estáticas, pero también, me parece, es bastante más superficial que otras disciplinas artísticas (no digo artes, por que si creo en la gradación; en las artes mayores y menores).

A todo esto, ando bien aburrido, preocupado pero ilusionado. Quizás vengan buenas cosas, no lo sé; estoy por decidir dejar el coro. Los poco enterados lectores de esta bitacora que se dividen en: 1)Gente que cree que los coros son para ñoños y 2) Gente que cree que el coro es lo que canta los aleluyas cuando no hay luz en la iglesia y 3) Gente respetuosa y sensible. Deben saber que por momentos amé pertenecer a una agrupación de este tipo. Pero muchos otros habría preferido otras cosas; aprendí mucho de como escuchar, de como hacer música con otras personas. Lo malo es la gentuza, por que no hay otro modo de llamarlos; personas flojas, poco comprometidas y sobretodo influyentes. Tienen voces horrendas además. Me voy entonces; algo triste por que llegué a querer de verdad a mi director y se que con mi decisión lo defraudo. Lo digo como si fuera a hacerlo, peor aún, como si casi estuviera hecho; pero no, me falta valor. No puedo creer que me vaya así de fácil. Pero si debo hacerlo, debe ser ahora, o mañana; pues, en estos días, no hay prisa. No. Debió ser el sábado pasado, en mi último concierto. No tendré mi salida emotiva; será más bien triste y frustrante y no triste y dulce.

Pronto, empezaran los otros ensayos de otro grupo; que o es diferente o no es. Esa es mi ilusión.

Het doel?

Ideaal dus om aan een experimentje te beginnen. De grote vraag: "Is het de dag van vandaag mogelijk om Linux als enige operating systeem te draaien zonder daarbij te veel aan gebruiksgemak te moeten inleveren?". Wel, er is maar één manier om daar met volledige zekerheid achter te komen: het uitproberen!

Gisterenavond heb ik een back-up gemaakt van m'n volledige c-schijf in windows (op een externe schijf) om vervolgens heel de schijf te formateren en ubuntu 8.04 als enigste os te installeren op m'n Dell inspiron 6400.

Dag 1, een muziekspeler

So far, so good. Het is dag 1, het zou me sterk verbazen moest er nu al een vleugje van opgeven in de lucht hangen. Wat ik wel ontdekt heb -en stiekem ook de maanden hiervoor, toen ik ubuntu al als dual boot op m'n pc had staan- is de keuze van de programma's. In windows gebruikte ik bijvoorbeeld iTunes om m'n muziek af te spelen en te beheren. Nu, bij mijn weten bestaat er geen iTunes voor Linux en de standaardspeler in ubuntu (rhythmbox) werkte niet zoals ik het wou. Dat is uiteraard volledig subjectief, maar ik heb liever iets anders.

Dus, op zoek dan maar. Eerste vaststelling? Er bestaan be-la-che-lijk veel muziekspelers voor Linux, de ene al wat beter dan de andere, allemaal met hun kwaliteiten en zwakte's. Ze allemaal uitproberen zou, naast veel te veel downloads, ook uitzonderlijk veel tijd in beslag nemen. Uiteindelijk heb ik dan maar voor songbird gekozen. Dat het er ook nog goed uitziet is goed meegenomen ;-)

De externe harde schijf beveiligen in zowel windows als linux

Op m'n externe harde schijf staan al m'n back-ups. Op zich geen probleem, maar het nut van een wachtwoord op je computer valt wel helemaal weg als je gewoon m'n externe hd kan inpluggen om vervolgens alles zonder problemen te openen. Gelukkig had ik daarvoor een oplossing in windows.
Theoretisch zou dat programma in linux ook moeten werken. Dus we nemen de proef op de som en installeren Truecrypt. Wat blijkt? Het werkt! Groot was mijn verbazing dat alles zonder enig probleem out-of-the-box werkte. Knap!

Het is dag 1, het zou raar zijn moest het nu al foutlopen maar tothiertoe lukt het nog best!

En nu maar eens gaan kijken naar een spelleke in linux, 'k heb nood aan amusement nu ;)
