- Ładnie wygląda, ale jakoś nigdy wcześniej nie spotkałem się z tą firmą.
- To auto sprowadziliśmy ze Stanów. Ma nieduży przebieg, praktycznie nieużywany i tak jak pan chciał tylko roczny. Za jego produkcję odpowiedzialnych jest trzech panów: basista Jeff Matz, perkusista Des Kensel i mózg zespołu, gitarzysta i wokalista Matt Pike. Ta doskonale zgrana ze sobą grupa stworzyła idealny twór. Wóz ma w sobie wszystko co do szczęścia panu potrzebne. Niech pan zresztą sam posłucha, jak genialnie rozpoczyna się utwór „Waste of Tiamat”: klimatyczne gitarowe intro i po chwili ta perkusja: szalona, rozpędzona, wściekła, ale także ułożona i opanowana jak dziki ogier osiodłany przez doświadczonego jeźdźca. I tak jest przez cały czas trwania płyty, proszę pana. Jak pan będzie robił przegląd, kiedy trzeba to niemożliwe, żeby coś nawaliło. Co równie ważne świetnie się zgrywa z basem i gitarą prowadzącą, więc nie mam mowy o jakichś kakofoniach.
- Dobra, dobra. Dla mnie jednak riffy to podstawa. Gadaj pan, jak one się sprawują.
- Brudne, ciężkie, typowe dla muzyki spod znaku stoner, wykonanie oczywiście na najwyższym światowym poziomie. Niech pan zwróci uwagę choćby na riff z „Rumors of War” (moim skromnym zdaniem najlepszego wałka w aucie) – energia, energia i jeszcze raz moc! Po co komu jakieś techniczne połamańce, których zagranie wymaga długiej, żmudnej i ciężkiej pracy, skoro można mieć to! Solówki jednak nie są takie błahe. Niech pan posłucha tej z „Dii”.
- Rzeczywiście świetne. Słychać wpływy Motörhead.
- Dokładnie. Matt Pike czerpie wzorce z tego zespołu, aczkolwiek nie tylko, bo ja słyszę również inspiracje boskim Philem Anselmo, czerpał również na płaszczyźnie wokalnej. Jego barwa głosu i charakterystyczna "chrypka" doskonale pasuje do muzyki granej przez High on Fire. Osobiście nie wyobrażam sobie by ktoś mógłby równie świetnie zastąpić. No może poza wspomnianym wokalistą legendarnej Pantery.
- Och! Wspaniały samochód. Głowa sama mi chodzi, gdy słyszę jego pracę.
- Tak! To chyba największa zaleta tej bryki – niewyobrażalna przyjemność z jazdy. Mimo prostoty kompozycyjnej nie nudzi wraz z przejechanymi kilometrami. Jest nawet wprost przeciwnie: znam osoby, które z każdym przejazdem coraz bardziej doceniają ten model.
- Tak, tak… Mogę zrobić chociaż rundkę tutaj po placu? Muszę samemu spróbować zanim zdecyduję się na kupno.
- Momencik zapytam się szefa czy wolno mi na to panu pozwolić. Szeeefieeee!!!

- Haha! Ten samochód prowadzi się doskonale! Ta tapicerka w postaci potężnych staroszkolnych riffów, ten ryk wokalisty z radyjka wydobywa się i kopie nam porządnie dupsko. Nie żałuję ani centa za ten wóz, mam teraz tylko kaca moralnego że nie zapłaciłem uczciwie, bo warto! 9/10

Okiem Niszczuka:

Świetna, naprawdę świetna płyta. Ciężki, brudny klimat, bardzo dobra praca perkusji, riffy i wokal - charakterystyczny i bardzo charyzmatyczny. Rzecz naprawdę godna polecenia! 9/10

The Body is two dudes from Providence, RI making some amazingly loud jams. Their face.to.the.floor breed of sludge-metal? is somewhat of a departure from most of the music so far featured on this blog. Brain piercing lobotomy sized shrieks and ribcage smashing instrumentals are not exactly on the same level as the whispery cuddlepop of Tokidoki's "Cookie Cutter." But, after their recent show in Brooklyn I struck up a conversation with Chip (right), where we talked about touring, luminous and phosphorescent beaches, Providence, technology, and probably some other stuff too. Turns out when i couldn't find them for their park slope show in April it was because they totally got fucked by some dude they trusted to help them out and couldn't play anyways cuz the cops shut the show down. I only mention this because I was pretty upset that i couldn't find the place. I probably should have tried to interview them, but i just didnt realize that id end up talking to them for that long. Anyways, even though they make angry sounding, politically motivated, sure to break your speakers and headphones musics, it all comes from a genuine love of their community, good people, nature, and lots of other things. Don't worry though they will still rock your basement to rubbles as you stand right there helpless with nothing to do except bang the shit out of your head as you go deaf.

The Body:

When the standards are followed is the key word.  Mattamy Homes did not follow the standards, similar to my case where my children were put at risk.  Profit can overcome legislation, particularly in these two cases.

Just how bad can it be if not done properly?  In the Toronto Star Sunday (July 13) edition they report on what has happened to those that lived near biosolid dispersion and storage.  The effects range from an overpowering stink to fatigue, cramps, headaches, coughing, malfunctioning kidneys, E.coli infection, Crohn’s disease and a plethora of other symptoms.

Mattamy Homes began construction on the land in Milton (Thompson and Derry Road) and this of course raised dust clouds.  These clouds would contain pollutants such as lead, barium and potassium.  Obviously, those neighbouring the development could be affected by this lack of care.  As well, the top soil that is removed prior to construction might just be stored and then brought back to fill in for the new construction lawns.  The very lawns you and your children would play on once you bought your new house.  Would this soil contain contaminants?

The Ministry sets wait times to mitigate the foreseen problems of contamination.  Mattamy Homes disregarded these timelines and started their project early, showing a total disregard for those living in the area and those whose homes were to be built there.  As you can see, the same type of business practice that allowed my children to be put at risk through illegal (code) wiring exists in the Milton area as well.  And remember, the same local government that is there to protect your interests in Milton, allows Mattamy to give free bus rides for public relations.  As well, the Town of Oakville enjoys a very profitable relationship with Mattamy Homes as well.  Try and get justice in that scenario.

Czwartek. Dlaczego czwartek? Gorszej daty na koncert wybrać nie mogli (zwłaszcza, że następnego dnia miałem zakończenie roku szkolnego). Ale pojechałem. Nie mogłem przegapić występu Cult of Luna, w stosunkowo niedalekiej odległości od mojego miasta. Koncert odbywał się w klubie Firlej.

Klub ów, naprawdę ładny - na ścianach wisiały duże zdjęcia różnych muzyków, w większości chyba jazzowych. Była też mała sala do mniejszych występów. Można było tam posiedzieć i porozmawiać przed wejściem gwiazd. Oczywiście nie obyło się bez niedużego barku. Pomieszczenie w którym cały koncert się odbywał, nie było duże ale spokojnie wystarczyło dla wszystkich (liczba biletów ograniczona do 333), no i było klimatyzowane na szczęście. Przejdźmy jednak do sedna, czyli muzyki.

Na start weszły dwie Szwedki pod nazwą Lowood. Co ciekawe, ich muzyka nie miała najmniejszego związku z później graną muzyką (no, może oprócz tego że wszyscy wykonawcy używali gitar : ) Kobitki pewnie załapały się dzięki znajomości jednego z muzyków Cult of Luna (w jednym utworze wsparł je głosem). O dziwo, ich występ był bardzo przyjemny. Taki pop/chillout - jedna pani grała na gitarze i śpiewała, druga grała na klawiszach wspierając czasem wokalnie towarzyszkę. Trzymały klimat.

Następnie wszedł polski doom metalowy Blindead. Pierwsze wrażenie - typowe metalheady. Zespołu nie dane mi było poznać wcześniej, dlatego byli dla mnie raczej niespodzianką. Ciężkie, porządne riffy i brutalny wokal (który czasem szwankował, ale to pewnie przez nagłośnienie), budowanie klimatu - można było się wczuć. Perkusja baardzo przypominała mi Meshuggah, niektóre motywy jakby wprost wzięte od Szwedów. Ogólne wrażenie - pozytywne, jednak bez rewelacji.

Po krótkiej przerwie nadszedł czas na gwóźdź programu. Cult of Luna. Zdziwiłem się, że wszyscy tacy chudzi, niby takie patyczaki, a muzyką miażdżą. Tego dnia nie było inaczej - zaczęli "Following Betulas", czyli na wstępie ostatnie ich dzieło.

Od razu zgniotło całą publikę, zresztą sami muzycy już nieźle miotali się po scenie.
Ale jedziemy dalej! "Owlwood" czyli jeden z moich faworytów, no i utwór na który czekali chyba wszyscy - "Ghost Trail". Mindblowing że tak się wyrażę. Te urywane solóweczki i końcówka, mniam. Szkoda tylko że czasem nagłośnienie gitar nie było zbyt dobre i robiła się papka dźwięku, ale dało się to jakoś przemilczeć. Następnie również bardzo udany "Eternal Kingdom" oraz "Österbotten" podczas którego muzycy dostrajali instrumenty i zdaje się bawili się też nagłośnieniem by je polepszyć, dobrze że robili to podczas przerywnika, lepsze to niż cisza na scenie.

Dalej zagrali trochę starsze utwory czyli "Finland" z przedostatniej płyty, oraz "Leave me Here". Publika oczywiście odpłynęła, pogo nie ustępowało ani na chwilę.

Po "Curse" i świetnym "Echoes", został jeszcze jeden utwór, zdaje się na bis czyli "Dark city, Dead man". Długie budowanie napięcia i potem wybuch. Tutaj jeden z gitarzystów wyczyniał cuda - wlazł na sprzęt i robił różne dziwne wygibasy. Po zakończeniu, członkowie zespołu bez słowa zeszli ze sceny, ludność wołała o następny bis, lecz niestety technicy zaczęli rozmontowywać już sprzęt.
Koncert był naprawdę mistrzowski - wokaliści dawali radę, publika dopisywała, dobra gra świateł, miotanie się po scenie muzyków miało swój urok. Na minus można zaliczyć czasem złe nagłośnienie gitar oraz klawiszy (jak również trąbki której w ogóle nie było słychać). Support również się spisał. Wracałem do domu zadowolony i usatysfakcjonowany.

Os sons de peso influenciados pelo punk, como o hardcore e metalcore têm vindo a ganhar cada vez mais influência no cenário nacional no que concerne a fãs mas também a bandas.

We are Damned é um desses caso, se bem que esta banda vá mais longe pelo que o seu som resulta numa mescla dos sons punk/hardcore com vários subgéneros do metal, nomeadamente o Death e Thrash. Mas não se fica a banda ai no que concerne a géneros sonoras, pois são visíveis algumas influências de Sludge/Stoner.

Ora esta mistura de ambiências sonoras não é fácil de assimilar, e de facto a música de We Are Damned é de lenta digestão, até pela sua brutalidade. O som dos We Are Damned é cru, agressivo e arrasador no bom sentido da palavra. Além de que é meritório referir que a banda consegue pegar em todas as influências sonoras anteriormente descritas e construir um som coerente se bem que careça de originalidade.

Seria injusto terminar esta pequena analise sem realçar o vozeirão de Sofia Loureiro, um dos bons motivos para ouvir este trabalho.

Álbum

The Melvins have been around forever (25 years or so)... which is forever in the rock band sense. They're what some might call "sludge metal" or "slow punk." They've got tons of albums (on majors like Atlantic, on indies like Ipecac). They've worked with the punk realm (Jello Biafra), the grunge realm (Melvin's drummer Dale Crover used to play with Kurt Cobain), the avant-garde/noise realm (Buzzo is in Fantômas with Mike Patton), and with the art metal realm peeps (Adam Jones of Tool has played with them live / the Melvins have opened for Tool on several tours). They've also collaborated with Lustmord (who recently remixed some of Maynard' James Keenans Puscifer tracks), and they plan on collaborating soon with Zu (an Italian hardcore/free-jazz band). Anyway, the Melvins are "well connected" in the scene. They've got a guitarist/singer (Buzz "King Buzzo" Osbourne) with very recognizable hair (video link).

Anyway, the main purpose of this post is that I'm totally diggin' the tracks on MySpace from their upcoming Nude with Boots album (Ipecac - July 8th). Totally diggin' as in... just about every track.

They're going to be in Eugene, OR (W.O.W. Hall on July 24th). I'll be in Cincinnati, OH, for a wedding. Rassen-frassen...

"Pond and Lake Muck Digester and Removal Pellets"

Actually it is gonna sound like quite a commercial for http://www.WeedersDigest.com but in reality I am just giving the documented facts from my own personal experience.

If you have followed my writings, videos and blogs, then you know that my business started out of the need to solve my own lakeshore problems. I never intended that the results that I have found on my 750 feet of lakeshore located just 7 miles from downtown Minneapolis would turn into an opportunity to help others all around the world!

Anyway, I am writing today to tell you of the amazing results that I have just monitored this morning regarding our Muck Digester Pellets.

My WeedRoller (http://www.WeedRoller.MN ) has done an incredible job of removing the muck and weeds in my swimming area - just awesome. So for testing purposes, I chose shut the WeedRoller off for a few days because the wind was blowing in a lot of silty mucky crud. When the winds died, I skimmed off the surface stuff using my Long Reach Rake with the float attached and allowed a layer of new silt and muck to remain blanketing the bottom. It was maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

From my dock, I simply dropped in about 20 pellets in the water and watched them sink. As indicated in the video, several small sunfish tried to swallow them before they hit the bottom but they spit them out.

I did this in only 3 feet of water so that I could clearly monitor the results.

That was last night at about 8pm.

When I walked down on the dock this morning to monitor the changes, the thin layer of muck was GONE. Totally GONE. So were the pellets.

It was about a year ago that I first started testing these pellets and at the time, I was tossing them into areas that had very heavy levels of muck and weeds and decay. I really couldn't measure how much muck was being reduced but it did appear that the smell became less noticeable.

After seeing these very specific and measureable results today, I am even more confident that this is one of the most impressive products that we have been able to bring to the marketplace!

I think that I will continue to encourage our customers to buy the 1 pound sampler package but after seeing this I will have no problem recommending someone jump on in and get started with a 10, 25 or 50 pound supply.

I am pleased to say that "I think we have hit another winner!"

De las cenizas de bandas como Paycheck o Johny Welfare nacen Baroness a mediados de 2003 en Savannah (Georgia, USA). Baroness editan 3 EPs entre 2004 y 2007 donde desarrollan un sludge metal donde también hay sitio para sus influencias mas punkcoretas que le aportan agresividad y mucha personalidad a su música.

Editado por At a Loss Recordings, Red Album es su primer LP y lo primero que llama la atención es la pérdida de la agresividad punk de sus anteriores trabajos. Red Album es un disco de metal 100% con una imporantísima dosis de melodía que puede recordar en ocasiones a las partes instrumentales de los últimos Mastodon. Con este trabajo Baroness han adquirido una gran notoriedad entre las revistas especializadas y es sorprendente (por su origen, no por su calidad) que Revolver señala al Red Album como el mejor disco de metal publicado en 2007, casi nada.

INIT (Roma)

Non si vive di solo Barone purtroppo, impegni inderogabili mi consentono di arrivare all’INIT (ottima sede del Die By The Wolf Fest) solo dopo la prestazione dei grandissimi The Orange Man Theory (testimoni oculari mi raccontano di un live entusiasmante con tanto di guest appearance del loro mentore Steve Austin). Entro e mi ritrovo Troy Sanders dei Mastodon che coverizza i Meshuggah; strabuzzo gli occhi e mi rendo conto che trattasi in realtà del chitarrista di tali Four Question Marks, francesi di casa Trustkill dediti alla “coverizzazione senza copyright” dei gruppi predetti. Diciamo che mi hanno impressionato per i primi 2 minuti scarsi, poi la sterile e davvero poco personale scrittura dei pezzi mi ha fatto preferire la prima birra con gli amici della serata.

Rapido cambio palco ed ecco che si palesano i Complete Failure, pericolosissimo trio grindcore per l’occasione senza basso, la prima bella sorpresa dell’evento per chi scrive. Il cantante si è perso in un bosco da bambino per poi ritornare alla civiltà solo di recente, dato l’aspetto belluino e l’abbigliamento da serial killer de campagna, il batterista (Mike Rosswog dei TITD) è sinceramente una delle migliori drum machine in circolazione, mentre la chitarra è puro rumore di ferraglia arrugginita. Insomma è roba davvero estrema, senza alcun tipo di compromesso; una moto sega sporca di sangue che gira in tondo impazzita. Da antologia la reazione rabbiosa del singer alle ripetute avances sottopalco di un’attempata e appesantita mistress sadomaso.

Quando salgono i Jucifer siamo investiti da una tempesta di drones e watt, la roscia chitarrista cantante Amber Valentine comincia a martirizzare i nostri timpani usando il suo strumento e l’ampli come i poli opposti di una calamita. Il duo di marca Relapse è shockante: estremizza a tal punto le proprie composizioni da renderle qualcosa di assolutamente diverso da quello che si può ascoltare su disco. Il risultato è quanto di più violento e straniante si possa trovare in circolazione. Facciamo fatica a capire se il batterista “David Crockett” sia un genio o un demente quando lo vediamo prendere a calci, svitare e rimontare il ride. Ne viene fuori un malatissimo mix di grind, drone, stoner e indie rock (anche se quest’ ultima influenza viene quasi lasciata a casa dai nostri), con dei suoni e un’attitudine talmente marci che il pubblico, forse ancora ignaro di cosa sia realmente accaduto, rimane esterrefatto e allibito.

Finito il piccolo uragano targato Jucifer, l’attesa per Steve Austin e la sua creatura Today Is The Day si fa sempre maggiore e crea una certa “angoscia” tra quanti hanno già assistito alle prime terrificanti fasi del Die By The Wolf. Il Reverendo è un personaggio totale, si fonde con il resto della band fino a possederla, diventandone la bocca da fuoco e l’unico terminale comunicativo. L’avvio, come tutto il resto del soddisfacentissimo set, è per stomaci forti; la violenza di esecuzione, unita a una presenza scenica molto scarna ed efficace, spaventa ed affascina tutti. Il Reverendo Austin era tanto che volevo vederlo, colpa forse di quell’aura oscura che ha sempre contraddistinto le interviste e le composizioni del maniaco di Nashville; mi aspettavo un tipo ombroso e poco accondiscendente col pubblico, ma sorprendentemente mi trovo di fronte a una persona di quaranta anni che ha voglia di divertirsi, sfogarsi, e regalare alla gente accorsa uno show fatto di rabbia, energia e sudore (molto sudore a dirla tutta). Si susseguono senza tregua pezzi da In The Eyes of God (disco dal quale vengono estratti la maggioranza dei pezzi), Axis of Eden, Kiss The Pig, Temple of The Morningstar, Supernova e Today is The Day. Il trio si destreggia alla grande tra il violentissimo noise del periodo Amphetamine Reptile e il metal estremo dalle tinte death-grind dell’ultimo periodo; basso e batteria (Rosswog è un fenomeno di quelli veri) supportano il dialogo di Steve con il pubblico ormai soggiogato e invasato. Sul palco sale anche Gianni degli Orange Man e in sala volano colpi proibiti nell’euforia generale. Se non finisce a tarallucci e vino poco ci manca, i Today suonano filati e se ne vanno senza bis dopo averci picchiato per bene; speriamo solo di vivere un’altra serata così il prima possibile.

Ale nie! Ba, Szwedzi poszli jeszcze dalej! Tym razem mamy brutalniejszy, cięższy album. Pełny surowego brzmienia i trochę jakby wrogości.

Na samym początku muszę, po prostu muszę zwrócić uwagę na niesamowity koncept płyty. Dawno nie słyszałem o lepszej historii, co więcej - opartej na faktach! Chodzi o to że członkowie Cult of Luna znaleźli w opuszczonym szpitalu psychiatrycznym (w którym akurat mieli próby) pamiętnik jednego z pacjentów. Nie będę opowiadał całej historii, jeżeli chcecie to przeczytacie o niej tutaj.

Jak już mówiłem, Eternal Kingdom jest płytą cięższą i zapewne trudniejszą niż poprzedniczka. Muzyka pasuje do tego całego chorego konceptu, wokal Rydberg'a jest zrodzony z bólu i wściekłości, jest zrozpaczony tym co mu się przydarzyło. Nie ma tutaj czystych partii jak w Isis, o nie! Na najnowszym dziele Cult of Luna cały czas jedziemy z grubej rury!

Na początek wita nas jakby rozpoczęcie próby zespołu. Utwór "Owlwood" z licznymi zmianami tempa od razu pokazuje, że Szwedzi raczej wrócili do cięższych czasów. Tworzenie napięcia klimatycznymi gitarami i różne szybkości gitar powoli przechodzą do zwolnieniu natarcia, po czym następuje tytułowy kawałek. Jeden z lepszych zresztą. Z przytłaczających ścian gitar elektrycznych i basowych, przebija się melodia, a wszystkiemu towarzyszy ten "niszczący" wszystko growl. Także i tutaj mamy wiele zmian tempa oraz nagłe cisze. Punkt kulminacyjny to głośny, brudny atak instrumentami na słuchacza. Potem muzyka urywa się i przechodzimy dalej.

"Ghost Trail" to jak to określił Meyde, kontrowersyjny utwór, lecz w przeciwieństwie do niego - mi on się podoba. To coś w miarę nowego i odważnego. Z początku nie wyróżnia się niczym, lecz potem wchodzą bardzo energiczne gitary, można by rzec - solówki. W środku tradycyjnie - przerwa, cisza by na końcu uderzyć z podwójną siłą. Słyszymy bardzo ciekawy, coraz bardziej rozpędzający się motyw niczym pociąg.

Trąbki to coś, co naprawdę zaskoczyło, zresztą nie tylko mnie :) Występują one w przerywniku pomiędzy utworami ale także w ostatnim utworze. Generalnie cały album potem opiera się na podobnych schematach co może być minusem płyty. Warto jednak też wspomnieć o "Osterbotten", czyli kolejnym przerywniku z jakimiś dzwoneczkami (?). "Ugin", czyli człowiek-sowa z okładki, to kolejny taki utwór, spokojna, wolna gitara wprowadza nas w swoisty "trans". Nie wiem jak oni to zrobili, jednak owe przerywniki to bardzo dobry pomysł, pozwalają chwilę odetchnąć po tym całym ciężarze który na nas się przelewa z głośników/słuchawek. Bardzo mi się podoba "Curse", które budową trochę odstaje od reszty, zapada w pamięć. Na koniec Cult of Luna zostawili nam "Following Betulas". Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje tutaj wokalista i niesamowite popisy jego gardła, oraz - wspomniane już wcześniej - trąbki.

Ta muzyka uzależnia, wciąga niemiłosiernie. Pokazuje coś nowego (trąbki, gitary!) i trzyma w napięciu, tworzy klimat no i ma fantastyczną historię. Cult of Luna po raz kolejny pokazali że stać ich na solidną płytę, nie dali się też ponieść trendowi by grać coraz to lżej. I chwała im za to!

Okiem Masty:

Płytka mnie zachwyciła. Głównie za sprawą niesamowitego klimatu, a to w największej części dzięki genialnemu wokalowi i przytłaczającym riffom. Chwała im za powrót do mocniejszego grania, ale "The Beyond" to to jeszcze nie jest ;). No i ta końcówka "Ghost Trail" (wspomniany przez Kubę rozpędzający się pociąg) - cud, miód i orzeszki, podobnie jak cała płyta. Ocena 9/10.

Non un semplice disco, molto di più; l'ultima fatica degli svedesi Cult Of Luna è un miracolo avvenuto nel posto giusto al momento giusto.

La band di Umea, memore della ricerca sonora e delle commistioni di Somewhere Along The Highway, si erge a “salvatrice della patria” di una scena che si raggomitola sempre più su se stessa senza trovare alternative stilistiche capaci di scardinare quel dogma che vuole, certo post-core, sintesi e miscela di hardcore e post-rock.

Alla luce del loro passato prossimo e della virata che dal ghiaccio senza speranze di Salvation (ancora scintillante dei loro retaggi hard-core) li ha portati alle atmosfere più autunnali, decadenti e raffinate, del successivo disco del 2006, i Nostri, fatto tesoro dei traguardi raggiunti, continuano la loro marcia nei meandri dell'esistenza e dell'animo umano attraversando un impervio "sentiero fantasma", parallelo alla via maestra, disperso fra boschi di betulle e colmo di spiriti ed immagini fiabesche scorgibili nel nero intrico di rami, onirica metafora dei dolorosi grovigli della psiche.

Lasciate dunque le “asfaltate” fascinazioni post-rock pochi secondi prima del tramonto, i Cult Of Luna ora si trovano in pieno viaggio verso altri orizzonti, se vogliamo più post-doom, in cui il recente insegnamento dei Neurosis di Given to the Rising delinea nitidamente la mappa da seguire per costeggiare l'apocalisse senza precipitarvi. L'iter degli otto non è affatto agevole però, vista "l'Enormità" in cui vanno imbattendosi, e l'incisione sul vessillo che portano al seguito la dice lunga: Eternal Kingdom è effige quanto mai esplicativa e, colma di speranza, inquadra pienamente lo zenit delle loro ricerche.

Dietro tutto questo non poteva che esserci un concept. Molto affascinante e basato sugli scritti di un malato di mente degli anni '20 (ritrovamento dalla band stessa) intitolati Racconti da Eternal Kingdom, il suddetto lavoro, curato alla perfezione e capillarmente dalla musica alle liriche, dall'artwork alla produzione (eccelsa), raggiunge da subito le vette artistica di questo, ricco, 2008, ponendosi in una condizione di difficile (se non impossibile) superamento.
Il full-length in questione si sviluppa attorno ad una sublime ora di songs dai suoni sludge-postcore che si intersecano in un discorso ampio e “disagiato” con cui Persson e compagni annunciano di esser maturi, all'apice della carriera ed ai massimi storici in quanto ad ispirazione artistica, oltre al saper radicare le esperienze passate.
Un album, perfetto sin dalle sue prime note, che si sublima in Ghost Trail e si chiude con gli struggenti fiati, dalle movenza di “marcetta”, ammiccanti a storiche chiusure dei Neurosis.

I CoL si sono finalmente liberati dai vincoli strutturali del post-core, scambiando i picchi emotivi e le deflagrazioni classiche del genere con la costanza di tensione che, rimarcata dai passionali rimugini growl di Rydberg, pervade tutte e dieci le tracce.

Gli svedesi ora possono muoversi liberamente nel “rock” tout-court, e ciò mi gonfia di aspettative per il loro futuro.

The gypsy moth was introduced into the United States in 1868 by a scientist, living in New Bedford, Massachusetts, for the specific purpose of mating the species of caterpillars with naturally occurring silk spinning caterpillars. The native silk spinning caterpillars were susceptible to disease, and poor silk producers. So roughly two dozen gypsy moths were imported to try to make a caterpillar hybrid, with greater silk yield, that could resist diseases. When some of the moths escaped from his lab, they multiplied rapidly, because they have very few natural enemies, combined with the exponential rate at which they reproduce. A single pairing of moths typically produces roughly 1,000 offspring. Each of the tan egg masses on the limb of the Oak tree below are the product of a single mating. Thank goodness they mate once then die.

The few that escaped eventually grew to be gypsy moths as we know them today -- the most serious environmental disaster to hit the hardwood trees of the Eastern US forests. The first noticeable outbreak occurred in Massachusetts in 1889. A century later, the gypsy moth had established itself throughout the Northeast USA and southern Quebec and Ontario. The insect has spread south into Virginia and West Virginia, and west into Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Small, isolated infestations have also occurred in Utah, Oregon, Washington, California, and British Columbia but these have all been successfully eradicated.

Since 1980, the gypsy moth has defoliated over 1,000,000 acres (4,000 km²) of forest each year. In 1981, a record 12,900,000 acres (52,200 km²) were defoliated. This is an area larger than Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut combined. Partial to total defoliation of host trees for 1-3 years, is enough to kill highly stressed species. And looking at the forest community, the favored hosts such as Oak are rapidly disappearing from the Commonwealth's forests, to be replaced by speces that the Gypsy Moth will not defoliate, such as Poplar and Ash. In attempts to control the pest, there have been massive aerial spraying programs, which carried there own environmental costs. DDT was used initially, and later Malathion. Now a species specific bacterial spray is used, BT Bacillus Thuringiensis.

When one thinks back at who were the big lobbyists that pushed Pennsylvania's Acre law, it was Agri-Business interests that didn't want to face the hurdles imposed by local control with regard to issues such as the growing of genetically engineered crops, and the application of sewage sludge to fields. At the time ACRE was being pushed in Pennsylvania, companies such as Monsanto were facing riots in Europe over the growing of genetically modified crops, and didn't want to face that prospect here, they wanted regulatory control centralized so they could manipulate it.

Local control is not only the Constitutionally right thing to do, but as the Gypsy Moth reminds us, local control is the only way to avert environmental disaster.

“Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale”.

Certo è innegabile che il debutto degli Stalker (band post-core genovese nata dalle ceneri dei gloriosi Kafka) non scopra nulla di nuovo, ma è allo stesso modo sacrosanto riconoscere che i cinque sappiano suonare e lo dimostrino ottimamente in queste loro prime cinque tracce.
Trenta minuti che, esplorando “tarkovskyane zone”, si insinuano fra i vuoti urbani delle nostre periferie sublimandone sofferenza, rabbia, passione e dolore in un suggestivo e grigio paesaggio urbano. Lotto di songs ben curate che decolla nella seconda parte, questa prima fatica degli Stalker si sviluppa attorno alle influenze fondamentali del genere in questione: una sorta di tamponamento a catena fra Neurosis alla guida di un tir, due utilitarie condotte da Cult Of Luna ed Amenra ed un motorino con a bordo gli Isis.
Tanto materiale sonoro ben amalgamato che punta i piedi su di un genere specifico senza disdegnare qualche spunto più “stravagante”, che a tratti si avvicina al metal-core ed a soluzioni care ai Russian Circle di Enter, conservando però in ogni suo momento tutte le caratteristiche peculiari ed i suoni delle evoluzioni moderne di sludge e post-core.
Decisamente riuscito il catartico incipit in cui lo struggente monologo preso in prestito da “Un Borghese Piccolo Piccolo” completa perfettamente la parte strumentale, ammiccando di tanto in tanto alle prime battute de “La Stanza Di Swedenborg” dei conterranei Vanessa Van Basten.
