Earlier this month when Microsoft released SP3 for Windows XP, users with an HP computer that had an AMD processor found a tiny problem when their computer would enter an endless reboot cycle.

The problem seems to have stemmed from some Intel drivers having been installed on the systems as part of the factory load. HP has been working on a fix for this and has work around info posted here, but Microsoft has offered up its own work around: block SP3 for HP users with an AMD chip.

Hopefully a better solution will be available soon from either HP or Microsoft. I guess HP didn't do any testing with SP3 on their machines before it was released? Oops.

According to Macworld UK the next version of Microsoft Office for the Mac platform will feature the return of VBA support.

Although the latest version of Office for Mac's, Office 2008, has been Microsoft's fastest selling version of Office ever, some corporate users are unable/unwilling to upgrade from Office 2004 because of the lack of VBA support in Office 2008.

Office 2008 dropped VBA support on Mac's in favor of AppleScript which was good and bad.

Good: Office used the same scripting language as many other Mac programs.

Bad: Documents and spreadsheets that were shared with Mac and Windows people that used macros were left unable to run on Mac's (the document could still be opened, but the macros couldn't run).

In separate Mac Office news, SP1 for Office 2008 should be coming today and bring with it various bug and compatibility fixes.

Microsoft's recently released SP3 for their Windows XP operating system seems to be creating some problems for some users trying to use their computer after installing it.

According to a post in Microsoft's support forum, some users installing SP3 are finding themselves in an endless cycle of rebooting. Computers with this problem seem to have one thing in common: an AMD processor.

According to Jesper Johansson, former program manager for security policy at Microsoft, there are two separate issues going on.

The first issue affects HP computers with AMD processors and has to do with a power management drive file called intelppm.sys. HP (among others) uses the same base image for their Intel-based and AMD-based computers. When this file is install and running it generally isn't a problem, except during the first reboot after a service pack installation where it causes the machine to either fail to boot or crash and immediately reboot.

The second issue, also seeming to affect only AMD users, involves an error about the computers BIOS though the BIOS is not likely a problem. Johansson says that it may be related to computers with the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard but he can't say for sure.

Thankfully, Johansson has posted a workaround for each of these two problems. To fix the first issue you'll need to disable the intelppm.sys file, while users with the second issue will need to plug in a USB flash drive before booting.

The problem is apparently with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, so the vast majority of Windows XP users wouldn't be impacted by the compatibility problem.

Today's the day--Service Pack 3 for Microsoft's Windows XP operation system is available to be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center or via Windows Update.

Included in SP3 are 1,100 hotfixes and patches as well as new features like Network Access Protection and Black Hole Router Detection.

UPDATE: Looks like the release has been delayed a bit because of a last-minute compatibility problem that was found with the update. For more info check out this post.

Ik ging vandaag even kijken en ik kon inderdaad Service Pack 3 downloaden. Ik heb deze gelijk geïnstalleerd. Dit ging als volgt:

En voila Service Pack 3 staat geïnstalleerd.

Microsoft has announced that Windows XP SP3 has been released to manufacturing and will be available for download on April 29th.

Microsoft says that they are not adding significant Windows Vista functionality to XP but they are including a new Network Access Protection (NAP) to "help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the Windows Server 2008 operating system."

Also in SP3 are improvements to black hole router detection (detecting routers that are silently dropping packets) as well as more descriptive text in the Security Options control panel to help explain things better.

SP3 will NOT include Internet Explorer 7, so if you've been reluctant to switch SP3 won't force you to.

Microsoft galt nie als Kreatives unternehmen, verpasste einige Trends und musste dann nachziehen doch nun gibt es Anlass davon zu laufen für etwas erheiterndes aus Redmond. Das ServicePack 1 wird nun endlich ausgeliefert und der Konzern motiviert seine Mitarbeiter um die Verkäufe anzukurbeln. Wie? Ganz einfach mit einem Ständchen an das SP1 für Vista.

Um auf den Hintergrund zu sprechen zu kommen. Microsoft gab bereits zu das dieses kleine "Motivationsfilmchen" niemals zur ernsthaften Motivation seines Verkaufspersonals eingesetzt wurde. Vielmehr sei das Filmchen eine Parodie auf ähnliche firmeninterne Werbespots die in Redmond schon für viel Gelächter gesorgt haben. Beim US-Gadget-Blog wurde außerdem nun eine Top 8 der schlechtesten Microsoft-Werbevideos zusammengestellt. Hoher Peinlichkeitsfaktor!

Wie angekündigt hat Microsoft gestern das Windows Vista SP1 zum Download freigegeben.

Bei der Verteilung des Updates über Windows Update lässt sich Microsoft noch einen Monat frei.

Das SP1 gibt es für die 32Bit- und 64Bit Variante.

Derzeit ist das SP1 nur in englisch, deutsch, Spanisch und Französisch verfügbar. Microsoft bezeichnet diese Fassung als "Wave 0".

Die als "Wave 1" betitelte Fassung erscheint etwas später. Wann genau ist unbekannt.

Das SP1 welches über die Windows Update Funktion bereitgestellt wird soll kleiner sein. Begründet ist dies darin das nur die Dateien für die eigene Sprache heruntergeladen werden.

Neue Funktionen wird man nicht finden, hauptsächlich werden Fehler und Probleme beseitigt. Das verschieben und kopieren von Dateien soll schneller gehen. Die Benutzerkontensteuerung soll auch nicht mehr so oft nachfragen.

Die Installation kann mehrere Stunden betragen und sollte in einer ruhigen Minute gemacht werden.

Wie dem auch sei. Fehler sind Menschlich und so wurde fleißig am ServicePack 1 gebastelt. In den letzten Monaten wurden hunderte male Vermutungen und Gerüchte zum Veröffentlichungstermin im Netz verbreitet und über die Möglichen Verbesserungen diskutiert. Vieles davon erwies sich als falsch. Doch all das Raten hat nun sein Ende gefunden!

Das ServicePack1 wurde heute zum Download für Jedermann freigegeben!

Das Erste Pack für Vista behebt vor allem schwere Fehler und gilt als Sammlung aller vorangegangener Updates. Es behebt die gravierendsten Fehler, sorgt für mehr Speed im Medienbereich und beschleunigt das kopieren von Dateien. Auch die Ready Boost Funktion wurde überholt und soll nun einen merklichen Effekt haben. Somit befindet sich Vista ab sofort wieder auf dem neuesten Stand.
Wer nach erfolgtreicher Installation nach merklichen und aufälligen Neuerungen sowie neuen Features ausschau hält, wie es seinerzeit nach der Installation des ServicePack 2 für Windows XP der Fall war, wird enttäuscht werden. Es werden keine gravierenden Änderungen festzustellen sein, das ServicePack sorgt nur unter der Haube für einige Verbesserungen.

Ich hatte keine Probleme bei der Installation (Dauer 30 Minuten, angegebene Dauer von bis zu einer Stunde) und bemerke in der Tat einen Leistungsschub. Schaden kann es nicht, hoffen wir das nun die gravierendsten Mängel der Vergangenheit angehören.
