WiiWare, often hailed as Nintendo's answer to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, offers original downloadable titles from both independent and established developers starting today in the US. Six titles will be available from launch, compared to nine in Japan, with new games to be added each Monday.

WiiWare games are downloadable from the WiiWare section of the Wii Shop Channel. Users must redeem Wii Points, which can be purchased from the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets, in order to activate downloads.

After an hour of play users will have the option to rate titles on the newly launched Nintendo Channel, with results published on an ongoing basis in order to help gamers identify the titles that have been well and poorly received. The channel will also showcase WiiWare titles in video format to give users an idea of what they're shelling out for.

"WiiWare is to the videogame industry what independent films are to Hollywood," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

"WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past - and the future."

Launch titles:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Square Enix, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,500 Wii Points)

LostWinds (Frontier Development, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points)

CNN - [q url="http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/17/kennedy.hospital/index.html"]

Kennedy was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after spending less than an hour in the Cape Cod Hospital emergency room, a spokesman for the Cape Cod facility told CNN.

David Reilly said Kennedy was admitted to the Cape Cod emergency room around 9 a.m. ET. Massachusetts General said it had no information on Kennedy.

The source said the 76-year-old senator had "symptoms of a stroke" at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port.

Kennedy had surgery in October to clear his carotid artery in hopes of preventing a stroke. Colleagues said he had recovered quickly and was working energetically recently.

Update 12:49 pm - NBC Boston -[q url="http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/national/BO78685/"]

BOSTON -- A spokeswoman for Edward M. Kennedy says the Massachusetts senator is in the hospital for evaluation after becoming ill at his Hyannis home.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

A knowledgeable official says Kennedy was hospitalized Saturday after suffering stroke-like symptoms. The official declined to be identified by name, citing the sensitivity of the events.

Kennedy spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirms in a statement that Kennedy went to Cape Cod Hospital on Saturday morning "after feeling ill at his home."

Hyannis Fire Lt. Bill Rex told the AP a 911 call came in from the Kennedy compound at 8:19 a.m. EDT A male was transported to Cape Cod Hospital and was transferred by medflight at 10:10 a.m. from Barnstable Municipal Airport to Massachusetts General Hospital.

[/q]

ABC Boston- [q url="http://www.thebostonchannel.com/politics/16316214/detail.html"]BOSTON -- Sen. Edward M. Kennedy underwent surgery to repair a partially blocked artery in his neck on Oct. 12, 2008, which was discovered during an examination of a decades-old back injury.

Kennedy, 76, was released from Massachusetts General Hospital a day after the surgery. The operation, performed by Dr. Richard Cambria, the hospital's chief of vascular surgery, took about an hour and was completed without complications."The surgery was routine, uneventful and successful," Cambria said. The blockage was discovered in a regular MRI exam on his back on Oct. 4.Kennedy's left carotid artery was more than 70 percent blocked. Though he had no symptoms, it posed the threat of a stroke. The problem was found during a routine examination of his back, which was injured in a 1964 airplane crash."Sen. Kennedy underwent a carotid endarterectomy, which is a surgical procedure done through a small incision in the neck, where the blockage and plaque is actually removed," Cambria said."My understanding is it was a high-degree of narrowing -- severe narrowing -- in other words a large plaque, and that does carries an increasing risk of stroke. Once a diagnosis is made, particularly if it is a very severe narrowing, there is some degree of urgency involved," Newton- Wellesley Hospital Dr. David Brewster said.[/q]

Update: Kennedy spokesperson is saying that Kennedy is indeed in Hospital for "examination" No other word. At Mass General there is a motorcade waiting outside. There should be a news conferance soon.

Two indispensable facilities: Mobile and Credit Card share one common trait: they are like a Porsche

Two indispensable facilities: Mobile and Credit Card share one common trait: they are like a Porsche. If you are not careful, you will get a Royal ride. To borrow from Tamil, you should look at their SMS, Emails and bills with 'castor oil in the eyes'.

I was recently given the ride by Airtel on my life-time-pre-paid connection. On 29-Apr-2008, they suddenly thanked me (garlanding the scape goat?) for subscribing to some back ground music facility. And in fine print (OK...OK...SMS does not have fine prints yet), a deduction of Rs 20 was done. (And it was to repeat every month!) It was immediately followed by another thank you SMS for downloading the song. Rs 10. Actually we remember receiving several SMS's - but had deleted most of them.

So, Rs 30 down the drain.

Suddenly it occured to us: deja vu. I had the same problem a few weeks back. That time, Airtel convinced me that I should have subscribed to it. I gave the benefit of doubt that time.

But, this time definitely not. We did not subscribe to it. Nor we downloaded it.

Then started the hunt.

Oh...there is another trait for Credit card and Mobile. You cannot easily reach them for making complaints. It would be deeply buried in options. I dialed 98450 98450 followed by 2(for English) - 4 - 9 to reach an operator.

I had spoken to quite a few operators from that date. One Sudhakar was very diplomatic: he said that the system was down and he wanted me to call after one hour. (If the system was down, why was my call directed to him?)

After a lot of struggle, I managed to reach Anita, floor supervisor who explained to me that since I chose to subscribe to the facility, no refund would be given. At least she was kind enough to give me the fax number to which I could make a complaint.

Assuming the fax number is not a shredder, I hope to get a response to the letter I am hoping to fax on 19-May. If the response is not favourable, should I consider TRAI or Consumer Court? Any suggestions?

I am giving below the letter I am planning to send as well as the details of the SMS I received from Airtel until now on this topic.

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks back. I was charged for the same facility (background music) though I did not subscribe to it. That time I thought that I could have been wrong. But, the recurrence of the event makes me convinced that the subscribers are charged for the mistake from the Service Provider’s side.

If you have ever had the privilige of visiting churches in oppressed regions of the world, you often will find several common themes among them. One major theme is that the church does not exist soley for itself but is committed to worshiping God and being the body of Christ to the community, no matter what the cost. They live simple live that are not bound to materialism. They integrate both evangelism and social action and don't think of those as separate ministries. They offer help when someone is in need, such as paying a neighbor's electric bill or providing care for each other's children. They are not concerned about other nations knowing about Jesus Christ. They seem to meet together all the time to pray. They love to sing to God and give thanks for who He is and all that He has done. They don't really care what time they get out of church and hardly glance at their watches during the sermon. They give more than 25 to 35 percent of their income away to the church and the poor. They care for the orphans and widows in their own communities.....Surely this is the only model for the church that Jesus would have us all follow....

I noticed the Blood Transfusion Service lorry sitting outside the Town Hall today and I realised, despite being full of great intentions, I have never given blood and don't know much about this vital service. A bit of research later and I now know that here in Scotland you can donate blood if you are between the ages of 17 and 66; and in good general health. Those who already donate will be allowed to continue up to the age of 70.

Anyone thinking of donating will have to answer a number of questions to ensure you are suitable to be a donor. To make sure you are not carrying transmittable diseases you will be asked some fairly personal questions about sexual behaviour, drugs, previous major surgery, etc - but just remember; would you want to be given blood that hadn't been checked out thoroughly?

So, if you're hale and hearty, then give a pint soon. IT WILL SAVE A LIFE.

Well here we are. All our bags are on the trucks and we’re all back into hurry up and wait mod

Well here we are. All our bags are on the trucks and we're all back into hurry up and wait mode. It's been a great morning so far. Getting everything done so dog-gone early affords us the time to make phone calls and send emails. Katy, the kids, and I even had the joy of doing a video chat just a few minutes ago. Man, it was fantastic to see and talk to them. Stephen said he wished I didn't have to go and was worried about "Puppy" getting lost in a sandstorm or getting a booboo like he saw on my hands when we were chatting. I assured him I would take good care of Puppy and that if he got a booboo I'd get one of the docs to take good care of him. Stephen also wished I wasn't in the Army so I could be home with them. That's a tough one, buddy.

After months of preparation and training, here I now sit with one small backpack and a pistol. Kinda naked feeling. It's finally here and definitely past time to roll out. Not much to blog about - I just didn't want the opportunity to pass where I could get online and not use it.

It may be several days before I can get back online and then info about what and where will be highly filtered. I just want to thank everyone for all the support, prayers and friendship. That alone has made it worth the experience. It's ashame I haven't been that kind of friend to most of you. Why don't we all just step up for each other every day, and not wait till something major comes along?

If you want to keep abreast of what's going on newswise overseas, check out http://www.mnci.centcom.mil/ and http://www.mnf-iraq.com/ . They will put out the releasable news that's good to know to keep informed, much of which the liberal press won't publish because it's not bad news or horrific.

I imagine the next post will be titled something like "Man, It's Hot" or "Wow, What a Plane Ride". Hopefully, it won't be "Man, What a hot plane ride. Wow!". :) In one hour, it's time for us to kind of disapper so no one really knows when we leave or how, etc for obvious reasons. Good looking out, Uncle Sam. I look forward to seeing and talking to all of you as soon as possible from the other side of the big pond.

Since most readers of this aren't Army, there's some key words to learn. The first one is "Hooah", pronounced "who-uh". Basically it means anything and everything but "no" and we use it ALL the time. Sometimes I even catch myself using it in my prayers. Here's a humorous but very true definition of hooah:

hooah (hoo ah) adj., adv., n., v., conj., interj., excla. (Orig. unknown) Slang.

1. Referring to or meaning anything and everything except "no".

2. What to say when at a loss for words.

3.a. Good copy. b. Roger. c. Solid copy. d. Good. e. Great. f. Message received. g. Understood. h. Acknowledged.

4.a. Glad to meet you. b. Welcome.

5. "Let's Go!"

6.a. I don't know the answer, but I'll check on it. b. I haven't the foggiest idea.

7. I am not listening.

8. "That is enough of your drivel; now sit down!"

9. Yes.

10. "You've got to be kidding me!"

11. Thank you.

12. Go to the next slide. ("OK, hooah")

13. You've taken the correct action.

14. I don't know what that means, but I'm too embarassed to ask for clarification. (this one comes in handy)

15. Squared away (He's pretty hooah.)

16. Good job (Hooah, Jim)

17. How to say goodbye to Army buddies without getting choked up. (Hooah, Jim)

18. Amen!

See you soon - hooah (you can pick which one) :) !!

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. When my daughter told me the plan that she and her frie

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first. When my daughter told me the plan that she and her friends had hatched, my natural inclination was to protect her. After all, I've been "burned" plenty of times in my life. I know what it's like to be hurt and I like to think I can spot a scam and manipulation from a mile away.

The history:

My daughter, Mack, really struggled for the first few months at her new school. Changing schools while a teenager can be devastating. She felt alone and friendless, hated the teachers, and had no interest in excelling at anything. She stuck it out (she had no choice) and began to make friends. Once friends were in place, her attitude about school changed. Her confidence returned. She began to like the teachers and once again get good grades. Seventy-four kids showed up to her birthday party. (I had given permission for twenty). On a social level things are going well for Mack.

Enter Hannah. (To protect privacy, all names in this post have been changed).

I first became aware of Hannah when Mack mentioned a girl at school who always seemed sad. She reported that the girl talked suicide and that she was worried about her. The girl didn't have many friends. In fact, most of the kids at school considered her strange. We didn't know the girl's family so I advised Mack to tell the school counselor about Hannah's comments and encouraged her to be her friend. I didn't hear much more about Hannah except for the occasional report that she still seemed sad.

Then last week Mack announced that she and three of her friends, Nikki, Lisa, and Becca, had decided to take Hannah shopping at the mall. They felt that a few new clothes might cheer Hannah up. Hannah had mentioned that her mother couldn't afford to buy her new clothes and so she always wore hand-me-downs. Each of the girls planned to donate her own money to the shopping trip.

I was worried. I didn't know Hannah or her history. What if it was all an act? Fueling my skepticism were recent news reports about panhandling in our area by teenagers who claim to be homeless but really aren't. Many people have bought into their sob story and have given them money. Mack has to earn the money she receives by babysitting and doing extra chores, she doesn't have an endless supply of the green stuff. Was she about to throw her hard earned cash away on a lie? Manipulation? A scam?

I know my daughter's heart. She genuinely cares about other people. In grade school she stood up repeatedly for an autistic boy who was the butt of many cruel jokes. Because Mack knows what it feels like to be alone and without friends, she has empathy for anyone in the same situation. She truly seemed concerned for Hannah.

Still, the mother instinct to protect was in place. "How do you know she can't afford new clothes?"

For Mack the issue wasn't the clothes or the money. "Mom, she is so excited that we are doing this. She even put on her MySpace page that some friends are taking her shopping. Some of the kids at school are teasing us for doing this. They think Hannah is weird. But we don't care. We are going to do it anyway." The issue for Mack was that someone desperately needed some friends.

On Saturday the girls all met at Lisa's house then walked together to Hannah's house. Lisa's mom provided the transportation to the mall. While at the mall they decided to let Hannah have a mini makeover. In order for the makeover to be "free" they had to make a purchase. Mack bought Hannah some eye shadow. Then they visited some of their favorite stores. Nikki and Becca pooled money in one store for a new outfit for Hannah, and then Mack and Lisa did the same in another store.

Mack was excited when she returned home from the outing. "Hannah was sooooo happy! She kept thanking us over and over."

Hannah wore the new clothes to school on Monday and Tuesday. Mack says that whenever Hannah sees any of the girls in the hall she runs up and gives them a hug and claims they are her new best friends. I asked Mack if the other kids at school were still teasing and making fun of Mack and the others for taking Hannah shopping. Mack says she hasn't heard any negative comments. She also says that she feels happier inside after having served Hannah.

I am so proud of my daughter and her friends and I am glad I didn't stand in their way. A new friend has been made, compassion has been developed, and a girl has been cheered. The girls exhibited courage by not backing down to peer pressure to forget serving Hannah. Not only was a good example set for the kids at school, a good example was set for me.

The lessons I learned: Don't judge. Serve anyway. And don't stand in the way of your kids if they are showing courage and taking the initiative to show compassion and empathy to someone else.

Lessons learned. Lessons lived.

There is a phenomena that occurs within the military community that is hard to explain at times to t

There is a phenomena that occurs within the military community that is hard to explain at times to those who have not served. It is sometimes perceived as a move towards isolation by soldiers (sailors, marines, airmen), wherein they gather together and establish bonds that exclude those who do not serve. This is not meant to exclude those who are not "one of us". Strangely, the fraternity is commonly open across racial, social, economic, and even national boundaries. We are kindred souls of a sort; even the enemy soldier across the way is in some manner one of "us". Those who created the series "Band of Brothers" and the movie "Black Hawk Down" observed and communicated this bond in an impressive fashion.

Duty, Honor, Country. These three things are building blocks that define a "soldier". One of my pet peeves in the current thinking of the Army is what they are defining as a "warrior" ethos. I am not a "warrior"; I am a soldier. Warriors travel from conflict to conflict, seeking battle and glory. I am a soldier - I go where I am ordered to preserve, defend, or create the underlying structure for peace. Armies are not gentle things - we destroy more easily than we create. Warriors are, by definition, those who excel at this destruction. Soldiers are disciplined; we are the bastion of what is right and ordered even in the most chaotic of places that is combat. We do not always succeed in our struggle against chaos on a macro or micro level. What we soldiers do, however, is strive - and in the striving is honor.

Against the professional slap in the face that was Abu Ghraib, I counter with the thousands of prisoners humanely treated in capture. Fewer than a hundred US soldiers have been captured by the enemy in Iraq; I can guarantee they'd trade the actions of the abberant few guards in AG for the best of treatment they received from their captors. And further, the actions of an unheralded few (including a Navy dog handler and one of the maligned interrogators) brought the abusers to justice. I could rant for days about AG; I won't go further at this time save to say that the greatest miscarriage of justice was the misreporting and slander against those who created justice in that case.

Back to the original theme of this post. I am out in the middle of nowhere with a dozen young soldiers I've started to mentor and befriend. With the exception of one or two, I'd never spent more than a two-day National Guard drill with them; in some cases I'd not met them until we were getting ready to come here. But these are MY soldiers, and in some cases, my friends. I never had met them, never knew their faces, but the day they came to work for me, they became my extended family and mine to take care of. I'll keep track of some of them; others will be more active in keeping tabs on me. I've got a thousand faces in my memory of people I have worked with over the years; I run into them now and again (Yes, that means you, SGM Thompson and CW4 Davidson). And, God willing, I will serve with more friends that I don't know yet when the Army calls again. And these friends, these brothers and sisters I have yet to know, will be a part of me. This is what we are, and why the fraternity is so precious to us and so hard to explain. Tomorrow I may meet a friend I never knew and never will see again - he may save my life or I may save his (or may the Lord forbid, one may sacrifice his life for the other). This is the crux of this fraternity (no, I do not mean to slight women - I'm a traditional speaker of English that uses the male for mixed groups); we are all bound to give what is asked, up to all that we have.

And we who remain honor those who did give all.

Merawat Baju Putih

I have been in consistent contact with friends, relatives, and fellow belivers in China. For the most part, the people I am close with live a good distance from Sichuan Province, the area of greatest impact. The people I have talked with tell stories of tremendous suffering and loss. One friend, a teacher at a university in Chongqing, a very large city in the area, spoke of collapsed buildings and multiple injuries on his campus. I humbly ask for continued prayer for these people, especially the children and families who have suffered such tragic loss. Chinese officials are now predicting death toll in excess of 50,000.
