Today I agreed to a couple of speaking engagements. Next year I will be doing a seminar at the World Methodist Evangelism Institute conference being held here in New Zealand. The World Methodist Evangelism Institute comprises many different Church bodies united under the umbrella of Methodism. I initially tried to say no to this, but the Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of NZ twisted my arm by changing the topic I could speak on... so I will be talking about the relationship between humanitarianism and the Christian message.

Today I also met with my friend, Sam Harvey, from Soul Survivor and agreed to do a seminar at the next Soul Survivor Festival early next year on the same topic. I also agreed to speak at Sam's church in Wellington sometime next year around the topics of death, life and poverty as they lead into a series on poverty.

Finally in this little place called Tanabe, birth place of O`Sensei, we found an amazing confortable internet place.. unfortunately quite a long way from our hotel, but on the same road of the 24 hours open laundry.. so good for waiting while the keiko gi get washed!!!

Today it was one of the hardest days, but I am quite proud to say I have survived a head breaking throw from Isoyama sensei, even if my glasses ended their fly a few meters from my body.. at least my body came out in one piece!!! But the week is toward the end and I am quite happy.. the bosy is feeling pain in several places (together with the wrist injured I bring along from the second day at Hombu dojo, "thanks" to an effective sankyo from Masuda sensei).

Tomorrow anyway there are 3 senseis I want to practice with: Endo sensei, Asai sensei and Tada sensei.. Saturday Aikido international demostration and sunday doshu practice, 2 hours of last pain in a sport hall far too small for the 600 foreigners alone, therefore a crowd hell for the 1200 total partecipants to IAF meeting!! :-(

Anyway, you can see below Stavanger Aikido instructors in front of a great O`sensie statue in Tanabe!

Breaking news…latest speaker announced Pat Abrahams, Former Director of Greater London Arts an

Breaking news...latest speaker announced Pat Abrahams, Former Director of Greater London Arts and Assessor for Arts Council England English bids for Capital of Culture 2008.

Last few remaining places available for this unique interactive event contact enquiries@arts-research-digest.com to find out more and reserve your place today.
The BIG Question: The changing role of research in bidding for, and measuring the impact of, large-scale cultural events - An interactive Arts Research Digest event, facilitated by Sara Selwood

When?
Informal networking evening 6.30pm, Wednesday 22nd October 2008
Full day event 9.15am - 4pm, Thursday 23rd October 2008

Where?
The Holiday Inn, Lime Street, Liverpool

What?
Twenty four years ago, Liverpool hosted Britain's first international garden festival. Every other year for the next ten years, international garden festivals (involving a significant input from artists) took place in Stoke on Trent, Glasgow, Gateshead and Ebbw Vale.

From 1992 to 2000, the Arts Council of Great Britain (as it then was) nominated a different city or region to organise a year-long celebration of a different art form, culminating in a UK-wide Year of the Artist in 2000.

In 1985, Athens was the first city to be nominated European City of Culture. Renamed European Capital of Culture in 1999, a different city (and since 2007 more than one city) has competed for the title every year. Liverpool is European Capital of Culture 2008.

What role has research played in the process of bidding for, and measuring the impact of, large-scale cultural events? How, if at all, have attitudes and practice changed over the past 20 years? How relevant is research to the people who plan, run and pay for such events?

The BIG Question is a one-day event, organised by Arts Research Digest (a regularly funded organisation of Arts Council England) to find out what you as cultural sector managers, policy makers, funders, regional and local authority officers (in arts, leisure, regeneration, economic development), consultants, researchers and academics think.

This event offers a rare opportunity for 80 participants with a shared interest in large-scale events and research to come together to:
• share their experience of commissioning and using research to bid for and evaluate big events
• ask questions of others with more or different experience
• look at the ways in which our use of research in this context is changing.

The event will combine short, stimulating presentations, questions and answers, panel discussions and facilitated discussion groups.

All participants will receive, in advance, a copy of a literature review of research, from the past 10 -15 years, on the impact of large-scale cultural events, commissioned from the Impacts08 team.

Who?
Chaired by Sara Selwood, cultural analyst and Visiting Professor at City University.
Sir Bob Scott, leader of Liverpool's bid to be European Capital of Culture 2008, Chairman of Manchester's unsuccessful bids to host the Olympic Games and of its successful bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
Dr Beatriz Garcia, Director, Impacts08, European Capital of Culture Research Programme
John Gold, Professor of Urban Historical Geography, Oxford Brookes University
Maggie Gold, Senior Lecturer, Arts and Heritage Management, London Metropolitan Business School
Stella Hall, Creative Director, culture10, NewcastleGateshead Initiative
John Kennedy, former Director of Cork, European Capital of Culture, 2005
Pat Abraham, Arts Consultant, Arts Council England Assessor Capital of Culture Bids 2008, former Executive Director of Dance4

The morning session will be opened by Sir Bob Scott, followed by three speakers on the changing attitudes to research in relation to big events. There will be a panel discussion and facilitated discussion groups.

In the afternoon, Beatriz Garcia will present, for the first time, her findings into the impact of Liverpool's nomination as European Capital of Culture 2008 on inward investment to the city.

In the second afternoon session, Sara Selwood will chair a panel, with experience of running large-scale events, about what kind of research do the organisers of big events need? Delegates will then break into smaller discussion groups.

There will be a short plenary session at before the event ends at 4pm.

Last first, I have now got mail alerting me to, as well as the Institute of Historical Research's Earlier Middle Ages Seminar, the new Cambridge Late Antique Network Seminar and the forthcoming medievalness of the Creighton Lecture, the University College London Medieval Interdisciplinary Seminar, which is being kicked off this year by no less a figure than Michael Wood, finally bringing his work on England and his work on India together. That looks exciting enough to drag me to what will be the first of three seminars that week, my goodness but it is happening. The webpage I've been directed to by this mail is not there (argh), so I give the programme below. I'm told that the London Society for Medieval Studies also has a very lively programme with Wendy Davies among others in it, but until they actually get their fingers out and get it on the web (academics! learn how to edit HTML! for heavens' sake!) I can't tell you more.

Autumn Term

27th October 2008

Michael Wood (Broadcaster & Historian) – Cholans & West Saxons: kingship & court culture in Tenth Century India & England

24th November 2008

Jane Garnett (Wadham, Oxford) & Gervase Rosser (St Catherine's, Oxford) – The presence of miraculous images in the Middle Ages

Spring Term

19th January 2009

Joe Canning (Cambridge) – Power & authority in the political thought of Marsilius of Padua

2nd of February 2009

Peter Biller (York) – Putting heretics to the question: the case of Bernard Gui

16th March 2009

Eamon Duffy (Magdalene, Cambridge) & David d'Avray (UCL) – Mary Douglas among the historians: reflection, response, insight

Matthew Kempshall (Wadham, Oxford) – Rhetoric & the Writing of History, 400-1500

There's some pretty good stuff there, and even that which might not interest me normally is being given by such good people that I will go, like as not, just because I might learn something.

Now, onto matters more local. You'll doubtless have noticed if, like a tiny fraction of the readers here, you ever click any of my links, that Wordpress runs this Snap program which pops you up a preview window of the site you're about to visit. I find this gets in my way something terrible, but is conceptually quite cute, and I've retained it believing that it might be useful to you the readers. Now, however, I learn that it's giving, for one, Professor Nokes of the Unlocked Wordhoard difficulties because it clogs his computer, and though he is getting a new machine, I wonder if there are more of you. I won't be at all sorry to switch it off (like most Wordpress features, it's configurable), but would anyone reading miss it? Speak up if you want it retained, otherwise I'll junk it once this post moves off the front page.

I'm sure the next post will be more medieval, but at the time of writing I've only got a book review that I probably shouldn't even write to think about, so I can't guarantee anything...

We will have the first Life and Mind seminar of the new academic year on Friday, the 10th of Oct. 20

We will have the first Life and Mind seminar of the new academic year on Friday, the 10th of Oct. 2008, 16:00-17:30, Room Pev. 1 2A02.

For this seminar we are pleased to announce that we will have Hiroyuki Iizuka from the Graduate school of Information Science & Technology, Osaka University, Japan, talk to us about:

Minimal Agency Detection in Evolutionary Robotics Model and Experiments

Agency detection is studied in a simple simulated model and empirical experiments. In order to keep the consistency between the model and experiments, minimal action and sensation are set up in a same way as Lenay's experiment where two blindfolded subjects are interacting while moving left or right in 1D virtual space and sensing tactile stimulations. This study explores the ongoing dynamical aspects of minimal agency detection in terms of the mutuality in social interaction. In the model and experiments, agency detection is defined as the ability to distinguish a partner's moving avatar with a dummy object that just replays the motions that are recorded when real two are interacting. It means that the motions of a dummy object and the avatar are identical in the passive observations. Only active mutual coupling enables the agency detection. In the model, an agent with an artificial neural network is modeled as a subject and the parameters of the network are trained by a genetic algorithm. The dynamics of sensation-action loop and mutuality is analyzed in both simulation and experiments, and the gap between simulation and experiments is discussed.

All welcome!

f’AC or firstasia’s Assessment Center is a selection and developmental method conducted by firstasia Consultants that carried out comprehensively and aimed to determine “the right man on the right place”

The basic concept of f’AC is similar with the assessment center in general, which is a multiple input process, where a number of assessor will observe the behavior of participants in a test situation or simulated activities.

The uniquely concept that separates f’AC from other assessment centers is its assessment center design, that based on a competence dictionary which has been develop by firstasia consultants’ team. The dictionary itself was derivates from The Big Five Personality at Work™

Shayne McLaren and Paul Jones with Richard Norton in 2007.

This Australian martial artist has come a long way since he first learned karate as a schoolboy. His friendly manner and infectious sense of humor belies the strength and skill that won him a notorious reputation as an elite bodyguard for Hollywood celebrities. Norton is not only a nice man, but a well-rounded one as well – and a man of many facets. Working in several movies and training in different martial arts systems, Norton never lost sight of his personal goals as a martial artist.

Norton makes his home in Los Angeles, where he enjoys every single day of his life, whether training, filming or having a relaxed chat with friends. Very few individuals conduct themselves the way this true gentleman does, not letting success go to his head while displaying the qualities of a true samurai. It all seems a far cry from his humble beginning as a 12-year-old neophyte at a modest suburban judo club in Nunawading, Victoria, but Norton takes it all in stride and one day at a time.

I want to write about snippets of life for leaders and lovers.

Leadership and Love, I thought, would be the two most powerful ideas that can transform our gloomy world. Two words. Twin words. For truly a leader must be compelled by love if he must lead and lovers compelled to lead if he must love. Imagine that power.

A quick look at the search engines indicate that life, love, and leadership are not just prevalent subjects. They are ubiquitous! In August, a Mumbai-based blogger wrote on exactly the same theme: LIFE, LOVE, and LEADERSHIP.

I then realized how universal the themes life, love, and leadership could be. They are never outmoded. Never outfashioned. Never out. All the more men and women should be writing about it. Talking about it. Dreaming about it. Until that day when life won't just be about crises but also opportunities, when love permeates every motivation and action, and leaders lead with the character and competence required in a fast changing world.

I'm a young management consultant based in Manila, Philippines. I travel in different cities to keynote conferences and facilitate training programs. I speak to thousands of people each year, uncertain if I really make a difference, whether they actually listen and they actually care.

In this weblog, my aim is not to deepen my uncertainty but to broaden my platform for delivering my snippets: random views, trivial invocations, and possibly, unpopular positions on leadership excellence, team synergy, and personal success. Sometimes, on anything under the sun, and over.

I invite you to join me as I articulate my two cent's worth. To the hardworking professional, the gutsy entrepreneur, and the boss who wants to be a lifelong learner of excellence...this weblog is for us. For the passionate athlete, the earnest scholar, housewifes and housebands, welcome aboard. We all need to grow.

The modular, brick-style technology stands to revolutionize the way people buy high-performance computers, allowing them to expand and upgrade only the elements they need for their systems or add new technologies as they become available. Traditionally, users have had to buy expensive "one size fits all" systems that either were too much for their needs or became obsolete quickly and had to be replaced--a costly and cumbersome process.

Without this modular approach, conventional high-performance systems often need to be replaced as often as once a year to keep up with changing needs, new technology or competitive pressures--at a cost potentially in the millions of dollars for each replacement. This daunting prospect can limit the progress of research and development and can hold industries and scientific pursuits back.

Now, technical and creative computer users can have the same modularity, freedom of choice, and ease of upgrade that people have long benefited from in assembling and enhancing their home-entertainment centers

Microsoft Windows Distributed interNet Applications Architecture (Windows DNA) is the application development model for the Windows platform. Windows DNA specifies how to: develop robust, scalable, distributed applications using the Windows platform; extend existing data and external applications to support the Internet; and support a wide range of client devices maximizing the reach of an application. Developers are free from the burden of building or assembling the required infrastructure for distributed applications and can focus on delivering business solutions.

Windows DNA addresses requirements at all tiers of modern distributed applications: presentation, business logic, and data. Like the familiar PC environment, Windows DNA enables developers to build tightly integrated applications by accessing a rich set of application services in the Windows platform using a wide range of familiar tools. These services are exposed in a unified way through the Component Object Model (COM). Windows DNA provides customers with a roadmap for creating successful solutions that build on their existing computing investments and will take them into the future. Using Windows DNA, any developer will be able to build or extend existing applications to combine the power and richness of the PC, the robustness of client/server computing, and the universal reach and global communications capabilities of the Internet.

Advances in e-commerce have resulted in significant progress towards strategies, requirements and developments of e-commerce applications. However, nearly all e-commerce applications envisioned and developed so far assume fixed are stationary users with wired infrastructure. A new e-commerce applications that will be possible and significantly benefit from emerging wireless and mobile networks is envisioned. To allow designers, developers and researchers to strategize and create mobile commerce applications, a four level integrated framework for mobile commerce is proposed. Since there are potentially an unlimited number of mobile commerce applications, several important classes of applications such as mobile financial applications, mobile inventory management, proactive service management, product location and search and wireless re-engineering are attempted to be identified. It is discussed how to successfully define, architect and implement the necessary hardware/software infrastructure in support of mobile commerce. Also, to make mobile commerce applications a reality, networking requirements is addressed, support from wireless carriers is discussed, and some open research problems is presented.
