I can't resist not putting a link to Curt Schilling's blog on my own blog anymore.  O.K., we do share the same surname, and I get asked a lot if I'm a relation just because of the way I look, and  I have a fascination with baseball that goes back Earl Averill, who is from my neck of the woods (Snohomish, WA).

But it's not that.  It's simply because Curt decided to get into the technology side of things by creating 38 Studios.  And from a technology standpoint, he chose a really great and promising technology at that.  Sometimes ordinary people do extraordinary things, and then use their success to do more extraordinary things.

So I am compelled to write.  The fact that Curt chose to get into gaming which is simultaneously rooted in science, math, artificial intelligence and art is big news to me.  Gaming combines the latest in simulation technologies and artificial intelligence with artistic expression to immerse the player into a new experience.  If you have a gaming company with that kind of talent, it can be used to make gobs of money in gaming and do great research for serious science projects at the same time.  The two efforts are inextricably linked.  The more advanced the science, the better the game, and vice-versa.  The potential for the staff at 38 Studios to add to the important discipline of artificial intelligence either now or in the future, alone, is exciting to me.  And I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Curt encouraged his staff members to present at an AAAI Conference.

Not to embarrass him, but Curt's obviously got a lot of drive to do something bigger than himself, and that takes character.  See, he's not content after a very successful baseball career to merely "take his toys out of the sandbox and go home."  He's putting his energy into gaming - which, from my perspective as an artificial intelligence researcher and computer scientist, is something much bigger than himself.  It's like going to the moon and "doing the hard things", as JFK said at 8 minutes and 23 seconds into his speech, just because it's there.

Well, all that aside, I'm going to enjoy the "World Domination Through Gaming" experience out of Studio 38.  My MBA spidey sense tells me he's onto something very promising.

Just a couple suggestions for the office, Curt: onsite daycare for your employees' children with lots of toys; lots of simple creature comforts like beer in the fridge and beef jerkey for the employees; a special creative workshop where all the employees can bring in their favorite hobbies and art to work on; and of course a nice yard to throw the ball around once in a while.

Keeps the creativity and morale up for all those big thinkers you have to hire.

"The euphoria in New York is palpable," Schilling said. "The Yankees suck this year and they are bitter and mad and making excuses over that. Now they got Tom going down so New York's excited. It's unfortunate, but when you crawl to the top of the pile you will have people trying to knock you down."

First off Curt, the Yankees and Jets aren't the same team.  They aren't even the same sport.  Most Yankees fans RantingMark knows are NY Giants fans and clearly they don't care whether Brady is hurt or not.  They knocked him around in the SuperBowl last year and beat him.  My guess is that Giants fans are upset they don't get to beat Brady again this year.  And while the Yankees suck (and RantingMark hates to say this), the NY Mets who tend to share more fans with the Jets than Giants are in FIRST PLACE.  Being that Schilling is a newbie, bandwagon Patriots fan, he probably doesn't realize that once upon a time, the Jets themselves in the form of Mo Lewis, knocked former Patriot starting QB Drew Bledsoe out of a game bringing Brady to the forefront, so this isn't as exciting to a real Jets (or Yankees) fan as Schilling assumes.  For the record RantingMark is a Yankess and Jets fan. 

Well, at least for once Curt is partially correct.  The Yankees do indeed suck this year and the Yankees would certainly agree that everyone wants to knock you down when you are on top.  They've felt that for 80 years.

Curt obviously doesn't know Boston Red Sox fans well.  Say what you will about Yankees fans.  They can be a tough bunch, but RantingMark never witnessed anything like what he saw at Fenway Park one day about six years ago where two adult male Sox fans berated a girl who was about 12 or 13 years old wearing a Derek Jeter jersey, calling her "slut and whore".  They said more, but RantingMark won't quote what he cannot remember precisely...  And no, RM doesn't condemn all Sox fans for that incident the way Schilling would if it were the other way around, but let's just say they are a tough bunch.  I am pretty sure people in Boston weren't exactly in tears when players like Chien Ming Wang, Joba Chamberlain, Jorge Posada, Alex Rodriguez and others went down with injuries for the Yankees this year.

Maybe Schilling is just confused.  He hates the Yankees with a passion but has a son named Gehrig.  Maybe he should have named him Buckner (and that isn't a diss on the underrated Billy Bucks).  And yes, Schilling is the guy that practically begged for a new deal in the offseason, basically stealing $8MM from the Red Sox when it was later determined before he pitched a single inning that he was hurt and probably out for the year.  Way to go Curt!

Perhaps karma is catching up to Belichick the cheater.  First he suffers one of the biggest letdowns in sports history by going unbeaten all year, only to lose in the SuperBowl and now his main man, Tom Brady goes down with a season ending injury.  While few are cheering the loss of the Tom Brady who is a class act, I don't think too many people outside of New England are broken up over it either.

And for the record, despite what he says, Curt Schilling gets my vote for the Hall of Fame if RantingMark had one.  You can argue his opinions but you cannot argue his career.

Then again, it's coming from the arrogant Curt Schilling, who expresses his outrage when New York football fans like their chances this year given the injury of Tom Brady, quarterback for the arch rival New England Patriots.  I've never heard Schilling complain against Red Sox fans who cheer when Rodriguez gets hit by a pitch in Boston.  In that situation, I honestly prefer to be bitter and miserable, rather than a real imbecile.

It strikes me that Schilling would promote himself as the grave digger of the New York Yankees dynasty when he's only wearing two World Series rings - compare that to Derek Jeter, Schilling.  I'm a lucid Yankee fan - more on this when the Yankees miss the playoffs - and certainly not a Rodriguez apologist - see this - but  nothing makes me more furious than the contempt of millionaires who only exist - sometimes - thanks to fans and nothing else.

On päris erinevaid parameetreid, millega pidude headust hinnata, aga kindel on see, et kui esmaspäeva õhtul passid Pärnu-Jaagupi lähistel Kodesmaa bussipeatuses, õlu käes ja prügikott peas, võib laupäevase peoga rahule jääda küll.

Liikudes ajas tagasi pisut üle viiekümne tunni ja ruumis natuke Pärnu poole, jõuamegi selle tsirkusetuuri suhtelisse algusesse. Ilusa Muusika Festivali Schilling alguseni on jäänud poolteist tundi ja festivali eribussi kirev seltskond seisab ümber lõhkenud kummiga sõiduvahendi asendustransporti oodates ja erinevate vedelikega üsna lähedast tutvust sobitamas.

Keegi ei pahanda, uus buss saabub kiiresti, pidu käib, varsti kohal. Schillinguga on üldse väga huvitav - olles kõik kolm aastat kohal olnud, neist kaks korraldustiimi liikmena, ei ole ma kuulnud ühtki halba sõna festivali ega millegi sellega seotu kohta. Kõik on alati rahul, viperustest ei tehta välja, õldine rahulolu katab maad. Aastate pärast vaatame nendele kolmele suvele tagasi ja õhkame, et selliseid festivale enam ei tehta.

Juba praegu ju tegelikult ei tehta. Peale selle ühe.

Ma ei üritagi hakata andma ülevaadet kõigist esinenud bändidest, eriti kuna oma kohustuste tõttu veetsin kaks kolmandikku oma ajast lava taga esinejaid tüüdates mõttetute bürokaatlike paberitega (kuid jällegi - keegi ei pahandanud).

Eks mälestused ole üsna hakitud. Teada on, et kõik bändid olid jälle fantastilised. Kui te vaid teaksite, millised verised võitlused selleks maha on peetud, et kõik kõige ja kõigiga rahul oleks. Selge on ka see, et tänavu kuulsid pea kõik külalised bände rohkem kui eelnevatel aastatel, sest Ankru baar oli kinni. Fakt on ka see, et Raul Velbaum jäi magama juba siis, kui mina alles hoogu sisse hakkasin saama. Võib rahule jääda.

Sam Amidonile jäi ilmselgelt mulje, et Kilingi-Nõmmes ei lõppe pidu iial. Mulje on muidugi õige, Schillingu ajal küll. Ilmselt hakkab ta ka nutma kui järgmine kord mõnd habemega meest näeb. Juba Tallinna tagasijõudnuna õnnestus mõlemal ameeriklasel osaleda ka tagaajamises, nimelt tundis üks nende auto kaassõitjatest ära oma hiljuti varastatud jalgratta ja edasist kirjeldab Sam kui Bourne Identity stiilis actionit, kus abi saadi süütutelt kõrvalseisjatelt ja tänaval mängivatelt lastelt. Sam päästis loomulikult päeva: "I waved my copy of “the idiot” at the man, causing him to have a moral crisis, and he ran away, leaving the bike to be returned to its rightful owner."

The numbers place him smack in the middle of a gray area.

He's 216-146 over his 20-year career with a 3.46 ERA and 3,116 strikeouts. But he never won a Cy Young Award, an ERA title or a strikeout crown.

But I think he's got to be in. Here's why:

1. Postseason glory - Usually, I think a player's postseason exploits are overblown in terms of measuring his Hall of Fame credentials. But with Schilling, it makes his best case.

He's 11-2 in his 19 career playoff starts, which is tied for fifth in all-time postseason wins. His 2.23 ERA in playoff games is nothing to sneeze at either.

He was a big-game pitcher who could win the games that really mattered.

2. Great in his era - This is my usual standard for measuring a player's worth for Hall of Fame inclusion. Was he great compared to the guys he was playing with?

Schilling was.

His lifetime ERA may not seem that great, but compare it to the league average for his career, 4.41, and it's nearly a run-per-nine lower.

He won at least 14 games in a season nine times and topped 20 wins three times. He's often overlooked as a strikeout pitcher, but he's 14th on the all-time list.

I don't think he's a first-ballot guy by any stretch, but I think he'll eventually find his way to the podium.

derrick rose: damn kid, you really opened up a can of worms on this one. listen, all us fans know athletes have certain teams they'd prefer to play for, but usually they opt for some modicum of political correctness and don't actually come out and say what team that may be. you on the other hand, basically just said, "yeah i'm a bulls man and the bulls should draft me. when i get drafted by them i'm going to pass out." hey derrick, what if the bulls go beasley's way. don't get me wrong, you're an electric player and they'd be smart to draft you--but hey, we can say the same for beasley, no? so the bulls draft beasley, what are you gonna do, refuse to play for the heat? i'm sure a player like wade will love to play with you now. smooth move man.

curt schilling: sorry to see you go. i don't care what they say, i think you're a hall-of-famer and also one of the best at shamless self-promotion. your regular season stats would be borderline to even get you considered, but your postseason stats and the fact that you blog, thus keeping yourself relevant, when you're playing or not, will definitely get you in. first ballot, i don't know about that, but 11-2 postseason record, 6-time all-star, world series mvp, the bloody sock, world series champ with boston, and the mystique and aura bit are enough to get you in.

kobe bryant: god, dude, would you just shut the hell up? thanks for agreeing not to play gm for the time being and i'm sure the lakers brass also appreciate your official stamp of approval with the roster. by the way man, i still don't know how bynum managed to get over the whole "i'm kobe bryant and i'm here to say that i think bynum sucks" show you pulled last offseason. but he did and your team is better off for it. kobe, two things will make you a better player and help continue to ingratiate yourself in the eyes of sports fans: shut the hell up, always. jordan didn't that kind of shit, and we all know how much you worship mj. my god, i can see you in your bedroom practicing to sound just like him; and, seriously man, continue to play like you did in the regular season and get your teammates involved. you see, that is one way you can be like mike. you will never be jordan, you proved that in this postseason, but you're still talented dude, and you can be close to mj, which isn't a bad place to be. to quote you at the conclusion of the finals, "second place is the first loser," in this case you're wrong--it's not so bad to be second to jordan.

There is no doubt that the domain industry is large. A smart person bought Business.com in 1999 from a lucky guy. Cost: US$ 7,5 mill. This person then sold Business.com last year for a whopping US$ 347 mill². It is unreal that this can come out of a guy buying the domain in the first place for US$8!

I recently ordered a domain appraisal from Sedo.com on one of my domains, Onesiteonly.com. I was once bored during work and bought it for 8 bucks. The appraisal analyzed the name, legal issues and other comparable transactions and from this then gave me an estimated prize on Onesiteonly.com. I was very happy with their work, and the report they gave me looked really thorough and gave me a foundation for further work.

As of March 1996, there were 274,984 registered domain names ending in .com³, the suffix reserved for commercial organizations. Today, the number is around 73,433,353 (source).

The team has been floundering a bit lately, and it would be nice to get back on our feet. It seems like as soon as something starts to go right (Ortiz hitting), something else goes wrong (Lowell injury). Of course, with players like Curt Schilling, Francona's no stranger to working around an impaired team, and the Sox certainly know the value of waiting for good things to come, but it would be nice for things to turn around. I can't handle the stress and disappointment of losing too much, not with the amazing team we've got, at least.

Some random tidbits:

• Buchholz is on the DL with "a torn fingernail." I kid you not.
• Cora's batting average is .474 now, with 19 at bats. Holy shit. 
• That surprised me because sometimes I forget that Cora's on the team (to be fair, he hasn't been in as much lately...). 
• Youks and Manny are tied for runs with 8 apiece. 
• Youks leads the team in RBIs with 30
• Ortiz has 7 runs, and his avg. is back up to around .234, which is great because a few months ago it was down to around .083. 
• I still think Ellsbury is amazing.

            Everyone needs a hero or an idol that they look up to and admire. Some people choose world leaders, actors, celebrities, or a family member. Personally, I look up to Curt Schilling, one of the starter pitchers for the Boston Red Sox. I have greatly respected Curt Schilling for a long time, and I hope to have the honor of meeting him someday. Through his team loyalty, determination, and aw inspiring baseball skill, Curt Schilling has proved himself worthy of being my idol.

            One of Curt Schilling’s characteristics I admire the most is his loyalty, especially to the Boston Red Sox. In the fall of 2007, Curt Schilling filed as a free agent, and many Red Sox fans, including myself, were worried he would leave Boston for another team. Instead of testing the market as a free agent, where it is presumed he would have gotten a 25-30 million dollars over a two year contract, he decided to stay with the Red Sox with the promise of eight million dollars for a one year contract. His loyalty to his team, which is a trait I deeply respect, came before money. Other former Red Sox players, like Johnny Damon, can not earn this respect because they left Red Sox Nation for other teams.  Curt Schilling overcame one of the most influential traps, greed, and replaced it with a much nobler one, loyalty.

            Courage and determination can make a great man even greater, as it does for Curt Schilling. Every Red Sox fan knows of Curt Schilling’s bloody sock. Despite his hurt ankle, he continued to pitch in the 2004 World Series. He shows not only determination to win the most important game and devotion to his team and fans, but also courage. It takes a lot of guts to stand in front of thousands, maybe even millions, of people, and pitch in the most important game of the year. Then with the added factor that he was injured and many doubted his ability to continue, the pressure must have been overwhelming, but he managed to work through it and win. He was determined to not let his fans and teammates down and to win the game, and also had the courage to stand up against impossible odds. His ability to stand up in front of seemingly unconquerable odds and face them down makes him the most respected man in my mind.

            Alongside all these great traits, the fact that Schilling is a great pitcher makes me admire him even more. He has been playing professional baseball for twenty years. He has had 3,116 strikeouts, 216 wins, and only 146 losses.  On June 7, 2007, he was only one out away from the first no-hitter of his career. All this in a twenty year span is incredible. He helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007. This is very impressive, especially since the Red Sox had not won the World Series for 84 years before 2004. Curt Schilling is an amazing baseball player, which is a factor I greatly admire him for.

            Curt Schilling is the most respectable person in my mind and one of the most respected in baseball.  With his charity work for a cure for ALS and donating over 150,000 dollars for it, he also proves himself as an overall good guy. He has shown that he is devoted and loyal to his teammates, his fans, and his job, while also demonstrating the courage and ability to get himself through even the most stressful situations. All these characteristics have made him not only my most esteemed person, but also a man to emulate.
