A Dercy morreu, a Sandy definitivamente não é mais virgem, e eu acordei com uma música dos anos 90 na cabeça que não sai de jeito nenhum.  Coincidência ou não, fui fazer a minha visita diária aos outros blogs e descobri que o cara (John Scatman era gago e fazia músicas que ajudassem as crianças gagas a cantar e acompanhar??? Não sei se é verdade.. (encontrei esse informação aqui) mas que é legal é, né?!!

Será que a famigerada frase “Teu passado te condena” foi legitimada quando foi inventada a moda, ou o ser humano sempre teve a tendência de fazer coisas que um dia se arrependeria?

Eclética não é a palavra que me define, meu gosto é algo mais esquizofrênico. Pelos meus ouvidos já se passou de tudo praticamente, e quando falo tudo digo: rock, mpb, sertanejo, pagode, samba, pop, dance e assim por diante.

Vivenciando a transição dos anos 80 para os 90 vesti shorts rosa shock, usei franja desfiada e calça jeans bag. E fico imaginando quando irei me arrepender do moletom que estou usando agora?

Anyways, I've decided to do todays post on John Paul Larkin, better known as Scatman John.

He actually was a very bad stutterer, and as a kid, started listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong, who have been featured here before.

He became quite taken with scat singing, and singing has always been a good way to compensate for stuttering. So it made it's way into his music.

He's best known for a song from 1994, Scatman:

As you can see, he has quite a unique style. It's rap; It's jazz; it's europop; it's scat-singing; it's a bit of everything, really.

Another of his albums had a few bonus track that were released in Japan, like this one:

Somehow, I think this captures the spirit of Japan very well. And there are some great shots of him and his mustache in here.

You know, I just love listening to the scat elements in here. It really is impressive. Sadly, Scatman John and his zoot suit won't be producing any more music. He passed away in 1999 of lung cancer.

It's kinda funny listening (and watch the music videos!!) to songs like Modern Talking's 'Brother Louie' or Mc Hammer's 'Can't Touch This' again. We continually went "hey, remember this song?" or "OMG, this song used to..." back and forth. This went on for about an hour and some of these songs are now stuck in my head thanks to it.

Brother Louie - Modern Talking

My friend gave me this one and he admitted that he liked this song when he was young. But he mentioned that they were one hit wonders...umm..no they weren't. I remember they have other hits like 'Cheri Cheri lady' and that song that goes like "if you try, you can win" or something like that :lol: The singers are funny too, I mean, there's the expressionless long hair dude and a blonde guy with the guitar who keep doing that 'holding up his fist' thing.

Initially, I didn't know the title of this song (googling ooooo!! oooowh!! song didn't work) so I searched for the Ninja Turtle 3 soundtrack and eventually found the YouTube video. This song got stuck in my head for few days now lol Oooo0o0o00oo00!! 0o0o0!!! Sadly, I found out that the singer passed away in 1995 due to AIDS.

OMG! I remember how we even bought the CD of this shit!! The dance, the remixes, the countless times it get played on the radio and I even remember how this music always get used in a game of musical chair for birthday parties!! EEEHH!!!!! MACARENA!! Haha

Calcutta - Dr Bombay

Kalikalikutakutakuta AyoiAyoh! I knew this Danish guy who keeps playing this song in computer class. He was the one who told me that Dr.Bombay is Swedish LOL His real name is Jonny Jakobsen who also portrayed other characters like the Scottish Dr.MacDoo and a Mexican named Carlito.

I remember this song started a short Scatman fad among my friends when we were kids. We thought we were cool singing gibberish like beepabapaopoebbabepaopodaeoadbaepa! 8-) . He died back in 1999 after battling with lung cancer.

This song has become sort of an internet phenomena recently due to a thing called RickRoll. Simply, you 'rickroll' someone by giving them a link with a misleading text (eg. Britney Spears nude, New exclusive Watchmen trailer, McCain calls Obama a N***er, etc) and instead they get a music video of this song. Yeah I know, it's silly.

Isto foi no auge dos meus 12 / 13 / 14 anos, quando então conheci Keep Coler, e descobri também que por mais que eu fosse tímido pra dançar, todo mundo dançava mal e dançava assim mesmo. :D (inclusive eu)

[John Paul Larkin (El Monte, California, 13 de marzo de 1942 - Los Ángeles, 3 de diciembre de 1999), más conocido como Scatman John, fue un famoso cantante de scat que inventó una fusión única entre el scat y la música disco. Su canción "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" (1994) fue un éxito a nivel mundial. Como a él le gustaba decir, su carrera hacia el éxito fue un proceso de "convertir mi mayor problema en mi mayor cualidad", pues Scatman John era tartamudo.

As a disclaimer, I'm not knocking either of these cultures. In fact, I am quite fond of Bollywood in India and that last video actually has a pretty impressive story. The artist is a mute and is a real musical artist. Before you say that people with speaking problems shouldn't make music, check this out. You remember Scatman John? If you don't here's his video:

One of the greatest songs of all time. Anyway, he had a horrible stuttering problem. The only way he could stop stuttering was to sing. And in sight of that, brought to light the amazing styling of scat-singing. If you listen to the lyrics, he says:

It's a Scoobie oobie doobie scoobie doobie melody, man. Ya dig?

Este es uno de esos días en los que me alegro de haber creado este blog. Hoy se cumplen uno de mis sueños. Puedo llevar a cabo algo que llevo años (¡qué digo años! ¡meses!) queriendo hacer. Hoy le rindo tributo a John Larkin, a.k.a. Scatman John.

John Paul Larkin nació el 13 de Marzo en El Monte, cerca de El Sereno, California, y desde pequeño estuvo acomplejado debido a su tartamudez. Se crió entre discos de jazz de Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie o John Coltrane. Como no, también se fijó en Louis Armstrong, artista que también practicaba el "scat" y al que homenajea en su video "Everybody Jam!". Aquí podéis ver una foto de cuando tenía 8 años, y aquí una de cuando tenía 18.

Era un virtuoso del piano, y en los 70 y 80 actuó en infinidad de bares de California, pero tonteó mucho con las drogas y el alcohol. Para huir de estos ambientes él y su mujer Judy se fueron a vivir a Alemania, y John empezó a actuar en el viejo continente. De hecho fue en una actuación en un hotel de Oslo donde le propusieron mezclar los ritmos del jazz con la música dance tan de moda a mediados de los 90. Publicó un disco muy raro de encontrar llamado "Transition", del que John decía que tenía cientos de copias tiradas por los armarios en su casa.

Se metió en un estudio y horas más tarde ya había grabado el que sería su éxito más conocido: "Scatman (Ski Bap Bo Ba Dop Bop)", y luego vendría su segundo éxito "Scatman's World", que daría también título a su primer album como Scatman John.

Se convirtió en una estrella, y vendió 21 discos de platino, convirtiéndose así en el artista que más discos vendió en más países distintos en 1995 y 1996. Pinchad aquí, aquí y aquí para ver algunos reportajes publicados en revistas de la época.

Luego vino su segundo álbum "Everybody Jam!", sin tanto éxito. Y finalmente en 1999 su cuarto y último álbum "Take Your Time". Como homenaje tras su muerte se publicó un álbum recopilatorio de sus éxitos de jazz, llamado "Listen To The Scatman (The Jazz Vocal/Piano of John Larkin)".

A finales de 1998 empezó a encontrarse mal de salud, pero culparon al estrés. Sin embargo pronto le detectaron cáncer de pulmón. Murió en su casa/estudio de Los Ángeles el 3 de Diciembre de 1999, por lo que hoy se cumplen 8 años de su fallecimiento.

Como anécdotas podemos decir que fue una macro-estrella en Japón, donde protagonizó anuncios de pudding y cosméticos, y donde sacó singles únicamente para ese país, como este Su Su Su Super Kirei, o Pri Pri Scat. También se rumoreó que Michael Jackson quería colaborar con él. Incluso hicieron latas de Coca Cola sobre él.

Sin duda alguna, el ídolo de mi infancia.
