This movie, from the looks of things, is going wrong all kinds of ways.

Reading "Thank you for smoking," by Christopher Buckley. I don't know why, exactly, but ever since I heard him praise the conversation stopping word, 'whatever', in an interview on NPR ("it's the perfect response, isn't it?), I've wanted to read one of his books. Whatever is the perfect response - it punctures any sort of pomposity, any sort of rhetorical long-windedness with one perfect, down to earth, teenager-y word. Whatever.

Another aspect of this story and characterizations that stood apart from movies of this kind was the main male role wasn't emasculated into some wimpy guy searching for his feelings.  His most gut wrenching moments had more to do with his relationship with his daughter than anything.  It was touching in a way that was authentic and genuine.

Cam trailer from ComicCon, here is part 1 and part 2.  I've done very little following of this movie, but considering Deadpool, Gambit, and Wolverine are my three favorite superheroes and they are ALL in this movie, it took a lot of willpower not to wet myself.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (seen only for a second without mask on in trailer) is easily one of the greatest pairings of actor and hero in the history of superhero movies.  And while I haven't typically been a huge fan of Liev Schreiber in the past, I gotta say he looks amazing as Sabretooth.

Every once in a while you come across a film on DVD that becomes quite a pleasant surprise. Well I caught one of those last weekend when I got a chance to watch DEFINITLY, MAYBE. This is a very well written and directed (Adam Brooks) movie that features the best performance in Ryan Reynolds career. While it was marketed as a romantic comedy its plays more like a light drama with Reynolds playing a thirty something, soon to be divorced, father that recounts how he met her mother to his inquisitive young daughter. Besides Reynolds, the film’s other big plus is actress Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers). I think she’s a highly appealing talent who has everything it takes to be a big star in the business. Overall Definitely, Maybe is one terrific movie and a great choice when you rent your next DVD.

Members of Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, were at the Comic-Con convention this weekend trying to create some buzz for its FRIDAY THE 13TH remake which comes out in Feb of 2009. I have to believe this will be a better overall product than Rob Zombies re-telling of HALLOWEEN. This was very intriguing for its first 45 minutes or so before taking a bad creative turn when the storyline introduced the very underwritten Laurie Strode character, which felt completely rushed and ill-respected. With the comic book movie craze at a boiling point, maybe this new Jason film can give the horror genre center stage, if only for a weekend, when it comes out next year.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Comic-Con Trailer

Will moved to New York (from Madison!) in 1992 to work on the Clinton campaign.  He left behind his college girlfriend "Emily" (Elizabeth Banks) but made plans to propose to her when she comes for a visit.  He harbors ambitious plans to become a politician, even the president.  After floundering a bit as the coffee and bagel guy for the campaign staffers, he breaks through one day when he secures donations from wealthy UW grads for the campaign.  While working there he meets April (Isla Fisher) who becomes his friend, though she's clearly in love with him.  He also meets Summer (Rachel Weisz) when he returns to her a diary that Emily had asked him to deliver.  It turns out that Summer and Emily had been roommates during a year abroad in Cambridge and slept together.

In any case, the story twists and turns as Will flits from one love to another, and in the present, Maya tries to figure out which woman in the story is her mother.  I wont tell you, because that would spoil the ending, but the best parts of the movie come at the end when Maya realizes that perhaps the story is more than she wants to know - especially since a recent sex ed talk at school has left her wondering what it means when someone is born an "accident" and fears that she herself is one.

By the end of the story she feels sorry for her father, sad that he never got his happy ending, though of course he tells her that she did, since he got her.  It's a cute story, and not overdone between the two actors.  I was very impressed with Abigail Breslin, though I'm not surprised to see her play the role so well.

So, Definitely, Maybe is a better romantic comedy/drama than most, since it does deviate from the standard formula at least a bit.  And, there are multiple references to Jane Eyre, so that makes me happy.  :)

One of the biggest surprises at yesterday's Comic Con came at the end of the Fox panel when, unscheduled, a very special guest appeared. Coming straight from filming in Australia, Hugh Jackman leapt onstage to introduce the first footage from Gavin Hood’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Needless to say the crowd went absolutely mental.What was shown was a sizzle reel of footage that will likely form the basis of the first trailer. Action-packed isn’t even the word for it and several scenes, including appearances from other well known mutant characters, drew forth a storm of applause.

The footage begins with Jackman’s Logan and Liev Schreiber’s Victor Creed (aka Sabertooth) huddled in a prison cell in army fatigues (Creed’s fingernails are noticeably claw-like). Danny Huston’s William Stryker stands before them.
Stryker: “You were sentenced to death for decapitating a senior officer. Your sentence was carried out by a firing squad at 10:00 hours. How did that go?”
Cut to the two tied to stakes and a squad of soldiers opening fire.
Cut back to the cell.
Logan: “It tickled.”
Logan and Creed are seen escaping, followed by a shot of Logan silhouetted by a huge explosion as he walks towards the camera.
Stryker: “My name is Major William Stryker. Tired of denying your true nature?”
Creed: “What do you care?”
Stryker: “Oh I care. I care because I know how valuable you are. I’m putting together a special team. With special privileges. So tell me, how would you like to really serve your country?”

As this is said a variety of images flash across the screen, including Logan with bone claws, an acrobatic Taylor Kitsch as Gambit with his staff glowing at both ends, Silverfox, The Blob and a very brief shot of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool – although he looked more like a normal Ryan Reynolds in a red t-shirt than the masked/scarred Deadpool of the comics.

Cut to: Images of the adamantium injection tank from X2.
Creed: “We didn’t sign up for this.”
Creed: “Who do you think you are?”
Creed: “This is what we do.”
Stryker: “Become the animal.”
Stryker: “Embrace the other side.”

Cut to: a series of images of Logan undergoing the Weapon X experimentation, being submerged in the tank and having adamantium bonded to his skeleton. We see an x-ray image of the metal going into his skull. His claws pop out – now metal-coated – and he springs from the tank in a classic Weapon X look with the adamantium injection spikes still protruding from his body. He attacks everyone around him.

Unidentified Voice: “We’re making him indestructible.”
Cut to: Logan as a boy, bone claws extended.
From there the action heats up with Wolverine clashing several times with Sabertooth in some impressive action sequences (Creed flies through the air, claws first, in one). There are also more images of The Blob and Gambit. Logan in a jeep, which explodes, flinging him into the air where he latches onto the front of a helicopter with his claws.

Cut to: a close up of Logan facing off against Sabertooth
Logan: “I’m gonna cut your god damn head off. See if that works”
He pops his claws.

Jackman went on to say that they’ve just wrapped so nothing’s finished yet but he did say that fans can expect a large amount of “berserker rage” from the film and thanked geeks everywhere, without whom he “wouldn’t have a career.” He also singled out Wolverine creator Len Wein (who happened to be sitting next to Empire) for a very special thanks. Now, whatever misgivings fans may hold over the film, there’s no denying they saw an impressive sequence, and if the rest of the film is as good as what was shown today then Wolverine may turn out to be a worthy X-sequel after all. The film is due out next May and we can hope to see some of this footage in a trailer very soon...

Marcos Siega's Chaos Theory starring Ryan Reynolds, Stuart Townsend, Emily Mortimer, and Sarah Chalke tells the story of Frank Allen (Reynolds) who makes lists on a daily basis to keep everything he does on a pre-planned schedule. Every decision he makes is done after deliberately making lists of the pros and cons of the choices he has to choose from. The story deals with the consequences of not being able to follow the list's schedule and the repurcussions that Frank and his wife Susan (Mortimer) suffers because of that.

The premise is too far-fetched, and the characters come across as being artificial and forced. The film is well paced and there are some genuinely funny scenes. Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer are engaging in an otherwise average movie.
