Mathematicians actually refer to them as pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) because they do not generate truly random numbers but instead generate sequences of numbers which (it is hoped) are indistinguishable from random numbers. There are many different approaches but the basic idea is to start with a seed number which is used as an input to the PRNG, then the output is used as a new input. A well designed PRNG will produce outputs which are evenly distributed and unpredictable.

A little thought shows that eventually a PRNG using this method alone will start to repeat (once an output is generated which is the same as the seed). To combat this elements of randomness can be inserted into each input. Common methods include measurements of the time, mouse position, radioactive decay, radio interference or cameras pointed at lava lamps or the sky.

A further problem which any piece of software aiming to track and exploit problems with a casino PRNG will have is that you don't necessarily get a stream of numbers being generated for a particular table. All the websites I saw selling this type of software seem to be assuming that there's a separate PRNG running for each table, which generates a new number each time the wheel is spun. In fact it is more usual for them to have the PRNG running all the time, generating many thousands of numbers per second. When a table needs one it is simply given the latest to be generated. This alone provides huge problems for any piece of predictive software, as it is difficult to see how it could possibly infer the link between successive results.

The icing on the cake is that the end user does not have raw access to the PRNG output. The output will typically be a very large number which is then assigned via a hash function to one of the numbers on the wheel. This adds a further level of obfuscation to tracking the PRNG outputs.

In summary I simply cannot see how these pieces of software can possibly work. Even if the PRNG was poorly designed and the numbers were generated on a per wheel basis, the period before repetition would be so immense that you would need to capture a massive amount of data before any prediction could begin.

If I were cynical I would say that these "roulette predictors" were probably nothing more than a PRNG wrapped up in a user interface to trick the user into thinking their input is affecting the output. I'm open to be proved wrong if anyone has one they'd like examined.

In replying to a comment I did some research into systems (computers, software and paper) designed to predict roulette spins, both online and on real wheels. This is a somewhat popular area, probably down to the famous story of the Eudaemons. What I found is that there are a lot of people out there selling these products, and a lot of stories of people getting scammed.

Before we proceed, two notes of caution. Firstly you should avoid any roulette system which is based on betting patterns, progressive bets or anything of the sort. If there is a weak point to roulette then it is in the spin of the wheel. The mathematics of the table bets are simply stacked against you and no amount of fiddling with bet sizes or patterns can change that. Secondly you should treat any "miracle system" with extreme skepticism. Think of the true value of anything which can give you an edge in a casino game. Why is it offered for sale? When a business will usually be valued at several years worth of turnover, why is this (usually low) price being offered?

With those caveats, let's look at systems for predicting the spin of a real roulette wheel. I'm not vouching for the validity of any particular system or piece of equipment, but I'm fairly certain that this can be done with sophisticated enough equipment and accurate data input. Remember that in American roulette you would only need to be able to predict a number with 1/35 accuracy instead of the normal 1/38 to give you a significant edge. There are three main methods;

Wheel Bias

A wheel that is poorly made or badly maintained can spin with a bias. Perhaps it is tilted or worn in places. We don't really care why we only care that the bias exists. There are documented cases of players recording results and identifying wheel bias, but you are very unlikely to be successful with this method any more. Casinos are much more careful to maintain their wheels and most have computer systems to check for any bias in their equipment. If a bias exists they're likely to know about it way before you do.

Dealer Bias

Dealers spin their wheels so many times that they are bound to get "into a groove" and have a set technique. Some believe that due to this it is possible to identify and exploit patterns peculiar to a dealer. The problem with this theory is twofold. Firstly if it does happen then (just as above) the casinos will know about it long before you do, and so have plenty of opportunity to adjust their equipment to prevent dealer bias being possible. Secondly if it were true then it would seem logical that people could learn "precision spinning", and to my knowledge no-one ever has.

Velocity estimation and target prediction

I think this is where we're getting somewhere. It was demonstrated by the Eudaemons (and others) that if you can accurately estimate the speed of the ball and account for the slowing of the wheel you can predict with some accuracy the area where the ball will land. The degree of accuracy will obviously be dependent on the wheel and accuracy of estimations. I'm sure that casinos have made some changes to wheels to increase randomness over the years. While it's clearly easier with computer power some claim that this can be done by eye with "paper systems". I'm not so sure about that, but would love to be proved wrong.

There are several websites advertising premade computers (many disguised as mobile phones) to predict spins. While I have no experience with any of them I would advise extreme caution if you're in the market for one. A quick google search for "Mark Howe roulette" will give you some horror stories about non-working machines and fake experts promoting them. This site (which I have no affiliation to) gave me the most confidence. The author invites people to see his system/products demonstrated in person before purchase, and provides plenty of information in an honest if flowery way. I intend to contact him to see if he's interested in me testing his system for this site.

Die Erfindung des Roulette wird oft dem französischen Mathematiker Blaise Pascal zugeschrieben – dies beruht aber auf einem Missverständnis: Pascal war zwar einer der Pioniere der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und verfasste im Jahr 1658 seine Histoire de la roulette und Suite de l'histoire de la roulette, doch handeln diese Schriften nicht vom Roulette-Spiel, sondern von der in Frankreich auch „Roulette“ genannten Zykloide.

Als Ursprungsland wird häufig das Italien des 17. Jahrhunderts genannt, immerhin bezeichnet Meyers Konversationslexikon das Große Roulette mit den 38 Zahlen 00, 0, 1–36 noch um 1900 als Italienisches Roulette – im Gegensatz zum Kleinen oder Deutschen Roulette, das so wie das Boule-Spiel nur 18 Fächer kennt. Die Wurzeln des Roulette sind wohl so wie diejenigen des Glücksrades im mittelalterlichen Rad der Fortuna zu suchen.

Das Roulette kam im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts nach Frankreich, wo es Ludwig XV. vergeblich zu verbieten versuchte. Napoléon Bonaparte erlaubte 1806 das Glücksspiel nur mehr in den Spielhäusern des Pariser Palais Royal, wo bis zur Schließung durch Louis Philippe Ende 1837 neben Pharo und Rouge et noir bzw. Trente et quarante auch Roulette gespielt wurde.

Die Zeit nach 1837 war die große Zeit der Spielbanken von Baden-Baden, Bad Homburg und Wiesbaden, wo Fjodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski das Roulette kennenlernte und diesem Spiel verfiel – aus diesem Erlebnis entstand der Roman Der Spieler.

Um das Spiel in Bad Homburg attraktiver zu gestalten und dem Casino einen Wettbewerbsvorteil gegenüber den anderen Spielbanken zu verschaffen, verzichtete François Blanc im Jahre 1841 auf das Double zéro und verringerte damit den Vorteil der Spielbank gegenüber den Pointeuren, worauf sehr bald die anderen Casinobetreiber dem Beispiel Blancs folgten – in den USA ist jedoch noch heute die Doppel-Null gebräuchlich.

Nach der Reichsgründung mussten mit Jahresende 1872 alle deutschen Spielbanken schließen – sie wurden erst 1933 unter den Nationalsozialisten wiedereröffnet.

Das Glücksspielverbot in Frankreich und Deutschland kam vor allem dem Fürstentum Monaco zugute. François Blanc nützte diese Gelegenheit und führte die Spielbank von Monte Carlo zu ihrer Blütezeit.

Heute wird Roulette in Spielbanken in aller Welt nach nahezu identischen Regeln gespielt, die Unterschiede – gibt es ein Double Zéro oder nicht? was passiert, wenn die Kugel auf Zéro fällt? – sind für den Spieler allerdings sehr wesentlich.
