i couldn't help it. even if the movie ended happily or tragically, as long as it involves love between two people, i always feel this something inside me. after the movie, sometimes i would feel like i want a hug, or i want to cuddle, or i want to give him a peck, or i would like to cry on his shoulder, or just anything melodramatic. afterwards, i would play my favorite scenes over and over again in my mind. i would ask him what he thinks. discuss those scenes and issues with him. i would not stop unless i am contented. then i would do my favorite thing of what ifs. oh this part he really hates. and i love making him infuriated and defensive over my silly what ifs.

I give you all kinds of insight and tips on getting over a broken heart in my book, Single Moms Dati

I give you all kinds of insight and tips on getting over a broken heart in my book, Single Moms Dating Guide to Catching the Man of Your Dreams in 30 Days and I totally encourage you to go ahead and cry and get it all out of your system. Healing a broken heart doesn’t happen overnight and it can be hard to see that there is life after a break up whether it was a man you dated or the father of your child(ren), but there is—trust me.

A couple of my favorite ways to deal with a broken heart are through empowering songs and movies. You’re not gonna feel like going out partying right after a break up, but while you’re sitting at home; there are a few songs and movies that can give you a little chuckle and help you remember that there is life after heartache.

Check out these songs to make yourself feel better after a break up:

You Oughta Know – Alanis Morisette

I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

I’m Every Woman – Chaka Khan

Big Girls Don’t Cry - Fergie

These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ – Nancy Sinatra

Shut Up – Black Eyed Peas

These movies are about break ups and screw ups that all have happy endings

Bridget Jones’s Diary

Love Actually

Shirley Valentine (it’s an older one but so worth watching!)

When Harry Met Sally

The Holiday

If you have a song or movie that always makes you smile after a break up, let me know what it is and I’ll add it! I would love to know what your feel-better ritual consists of and I’m sure that other women reading would love it to. It always helps to know that someone else knows where you’re coming from.

Hope you like my picks!

Hey everyone
So, I got a chance to watch “Love Actually” for the first time yesterday

Hey everyone:)

So, I got a chance to watch "Love Actually" for the first time yesterday. I loved it! I thought it was wonderful. What a great Law of Attraction movie. Everyone learned something and not everyone got what they wanted. It showed that there are many types of love, not just the romantic kind. It was very sweet and all the actors were so good. I think it was quite deceiving that the trailer was making it look like a chick flick. It is in certain ways, but in certain other ways it is absolutely not. In fact, it is one of my brother's favorite movies (I believe). It was absolutely hilarious.

My favorite actors in the whole thing was, number one Emma Thompson. She did absolutely terrific at playing a married woman whom finds out that her husband was cheating on her. Whether it was just buying a necklace for a girl, kissing the girl, or having sex with her is what she does not know. Emma Thompson has a great energy with her and her character's weak moments are very well done and you definitely feel her anguish and disappointment.

Laura Linney also did very well as a girl who has been in love with a man for two years and when she finally gets the chance to be with him her brother calls. Her brother is mentally ill and with her parents not around she is left to take care of them. Her honesty and sweetness in relation with her brother (and slight sadness for the inability to be with said guy, because she is always on the phone) is very honest and it made me cry.

There are many other wonderful performances from Liam Neeson, Keira Knightly, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, and tons of others that are very worth watching it for. It is an incredible film. It is probably my favorite romantic film (second only to "50 First Dates").

The plotlines were fantastic. I can't go into all of them, because there are so many and they all intertwine at one point. One of the plotlines is about the prime minister (Hugh Grant) who falls in love with a girl of his catering staff at the same time trying to deal with the President of the United States (Billy Bob Thorton). Then there is also a plotline about a father (Liam Neeson) whose wife has just died and his eleven year old has just fallen in love. He is trying to find out how to communicate with him and help him. It was beautiful and very well done.

I think we all could learn something from this film. Number one is that there are many different kinds of loves throughout our lives. There is romantic love, friendship, family love, and career love. There are so many different avenues that we do not need to crave romantic love all the time (although it is very nice), after all there are so many things and people we can love in life without constantly worrying if we are going to find that right person. Number two, is that although things don't always work the way we want them to, it doesn't mean that it is not the right thing for us. In the end if we believe in ourselves and who we are, we will attract people and situations that match that.

Please, watch this movie and tell me what you think of it. I beg on my hands and knees (just kidding). I think it is absolutely wonderful though and well worth a watch.

Alright, I'm off to make a terrific day!

Have a good one:)

Hey everyone
So yesterday was my day off which means that I got to watch a movie, of course. Well

Hey everyone:)

So yesterday was my day off which means that I got to watch a movie, of course. Well, yesterday I watched the movie "Atonement" which was nominated for one of our Academy Awards this year as best picture. I thought it was very good, but in a different way than I thought. I expected it to be a romance....what I didn't expect is for it to be an incredibly quiet yet beautiful movie soaked in drama that was definitely not all about romance. In fact, some of the romance scenes were a little overdramatic for me. The message was incredibly powerful.

If none of you have seen the movie it is about a little girl named "Briony" who tells a police officer that her sister "Cecilia's" lover "Robbie" was the one who raped her friend. She tells the officer that she was sure she saw him, although she wasn't sure at all. It is about how this affects everyone's life and how Briony learns to atone for her offense.

I am not a huge Keira Knightly. While she seems to move from spot to spot in the emotional arena, to me she lacks a little depth. It is a little same in this picture although she doesn't mug half as much and it makes for a much better performance. She plays "Cecilia" who is a high-browed daughter of a rich family and whose lover "Robbie" gets convicted of rape, because of her sister. She plays it just fine and even with a little more emotional depth than I would have expected.

The true actor in the whole thing is James McAvoy who plays the part of "Robbie" the lover who gets convicted of rape and joins the war to get out of prison. He plays the part of a man who has been in prison many years with a tortured persona very well. His moments when he is happy (with "Cecilia) sell just as well which in the end makes you crave for the time that both "Cecilia" and "Robbie" want so badly.

The cinematography (for me at least) was mind blowing. Not only were they telling the story with the shots of the film, but they were becoming a part of it. The vivid detail and beautiful coloring are really used to enforce the ideals of the film. When you watch the movie look for the incredible shot on the beach. It is all one long shot and that ferris wheel in the background just adds that eerie yet childish symbology, that echoes of the "Robbie" inside.

The costumes that a character wears can show us how a character is feeling inside at that given moment, how that person is put into society, and how they take care of themselves. The costumer did a terrific job at doing just that. From the passionate green of "Cecilia's" dress in the love scene to "Briony's" red worn, and seen throughout her scenes, that represents the blood she has never been able to wash off for her offense, we learn even more about the characters throughout it all.

This movie is mostly about the consequences of our little actions. "Briony" as a child thought that the way to get rid of the problem was to tell a lie. It took her a long time, but throughout the years she figured out what a huge impact it had on her sister. She finally realizes that her sister never got the time with her lover, because of what she did. Not only that, but it could result in some of the people she loves death.

Surprisingly enough, this story is not only about atonement, but about redemption as well. Everyone at some time in their life feels they need to redeem theirselves for an offense they have done to someone they love. What do you do if you never get that forgiveness from the other person? You try to forgive yourself. It is a little harder than it seems. In this movie "Briony" finds her redemption through writing. Some of us are never so lucky and go through life feeling trapped, because of the guilt. We all need to learn to let go.

I would definitely suggest this movie. Some of you will love it (probably the women), and some of you will hate it (probably the men). In the end you cannot at the least see this film for a wonderful piece of art, because that's just what it is. Not a Picasso painting though.....probably Monet.

Alright, I'm off to make my terrific day!

Have a good one:)

Hey everyone:)

I get another day off today. Lucky me! I will be making Black Forest Gateau Cake. Yum. Anywho, I just got a chance yesterday morning to watch "My Best Friend's Wedding" again. There is such a funny thing about romantic comedies. I mean, they are all basically the same plot, but everything is switched around. There are a few things they put in to make each one distinctive like actors, costumes, and locations. The funny strange part is that we keep going back to watch them. Do you know why we keep going back to watch them? It is because they make us feel good. Our natural instinct is to love. That is what the movies provide. So, who am I to spit upon romantic comedy watchers. "My Best Friend's Wedding" is one of my favorites. I think the reason it is one of my favorites is because along with all the love stuff there is an undercurrent of truth and bittersweet ending.

Okay, so if no one has seen the movie before I will give you a small run down of the plot. Okay, so what we have is this food critic "Jules" (played by Julia Roberts) who finds out that she is in love with her best friend. He has been in love with her for years. The only problem is that he is now getting married to the other girl of his dreams. "Jules'" goal is to get herself to tell her best friend she is in love with him and successfully break up his wedding. See, plot is typical romantic comedy, but take my word for it...it is good, a guilty pleasure.

Let's talk performances. Julia Robert was perfect as "Jules," a tomboyish woman with some more masculine traits. Very private and closed in is the name of the game for her. I like Julia Roberts in this role. As we all know, Julia is very good at playing the love sick puppy. While she has strength of character at the right moments, she also can portray yearning and love in her eyes that very few actors can do with honesty.

Then we have Cameron Diaz as "Kimmie" the bride to be. The beautiful part about this story is that the screenwriters decided to not make the fiancee a mean person. What we have is someone who is very bright eyed, sweet, and ultra feminine. Diaz pulls this off very well. First of all, she has the look for it. Then there is her ability to change from exuberant to pained in point one seconds without looking like she is overacting. You should definitely bookmark the scene where she catches "Jules" kissing her fiancee "Michael." Very moving.

Alright, so if we are talking about romantic comedies we have to talk about the details. The locations were very well chose. It went from a wedding rehearsal at a beautiful New York manor to a vibrant and colorful downtown karaoke bar. Every location enriched and detailed the film. Who ever put that dancing scene between "Jules" and "Michael" on that ferry ought to get a raise. Very well done.

The costumes were very direct and to the point too. The important part about a costume is that they are reflections on the inner nature of the character. After all, how we dress ourselves shows how we feel about ourselves. "Jules" was put in a lot of dark suits. That is great for her because it really shows that she is more of a masculine figure that doesn't draw attention to herself. "Kimmie" is put in a lot of bright feminine clothes. Her preppy fashion helps us understand that she is a bright person who is ultra feminine and from a good family. Sadly, in this film the men aren't played up as much. This movie was clearly targeted for girls and their dates. Oh, also check out that beautiful lavender dress that "Jules" is wearing. It is so gorgeous.

What I got from this film is that love is love. Just because you say you are in love doesn't mean that person loves you back. It is important enough to know that you would do anything for that person. Whether or not they pick you or the other girl is irrelevant, because after all loving someone is caring for them unconditionally. If you can do that, that person is a lover or friend for life.

While some people get all flared up about the end of the movie. I thought it was a perfect ending. Other people say it is to sad, but to me it is not so. I have to say that it is definitely bittersweet, but the main thing is that "Jules" found herself. That is the most wonderful part of it. Anyways, I would suggest picking it up just if you have a hankering for a romantic comedy and if you like the actors. You really do have to like them to enjoy this movie.

I'm off to make my day!

Have a good one:)

Hey everyone:)

So last night I had a pretty bad headache, so I thought I would lay down and watch a movie. I decided to watch "Ghost" for some weird reason. I hadn't seen it in a really long time and thought I would watch it again. I loved it just as much as the last time I saw it. I think it is that really great chemistry between the two actors, plus the very hilarious Whoopi Goldberg is always a plus. The movie makes you think, but it also makes you feel. I also love that great combination between a romance and a thriller. If no one has ever heard about it before, it is about two people that are very much in love and one night while walking home the boyfriend gets murdered. His need to be with his girlfriend gears him to stay on Earth. What unfolds is that the title character finds out there was an elaborate plot to have him murdered. Trying to protect his girlfriend, he finds himself in the hands of a funny spiritual adviser. I won't tell the end though....I promise.

Patrick Swayze played "Sam Wheat" the boyfriend who was murdered and now follows his ex-girlfriend around. His emotionality and tenderness really works for the character. The best part about both his and Demi Moore's performance is that you feel that they really love each other. Not just for one time, but for all time. Then we have Demi Moore as "Molly Jensen" the girlfriend who is mourning her passed away boyfriend and the subject of danger from "Sam's" murderer. She does it with absolute vulnerability and strength that defines the whole movie and sets the emotional bar for all the characters. After all, she is the emotional center of the movie, she is the mourner turned believer. My favorite in the whole affair was Whoopi Goldberg as "Oda Mae Brown," the fake psychic who turns into a real psychic when she hears "Sam's" voice one day. She does her absolute best in this movie. She made me laugh the first time I saw it and to this day I still laugh. That scene with the $4,000,000 check and the nuns will still get me in stitches. She is truly the comic relief of the picture. She is what makes everything even. Another words, she balances out the sadness with her humor. It makes you enjoy the movie rather than feel bogged down in depression throughout the whole thing.

Technically the movie was just fine. I think what was the best part was the direction by Jerry Zucker. Every scene has a little something to offer us and inform us about and that is all due to the direction. That love scene with the pottery has to be the most sensual love scene I have seen. That all has to do with the director and how he pulls it off. That scene is so important too, because if we understand how in love "Molly" and "Sam" are, only then will we believe the validity of the movie. This is a fairly hard movie to direct. There was a lot of graphics and tricking the audience in believing that "Sam" is in the room, but no one can see him. The dialog was really good too. Especially in the scenes between "Oda Mae" and "Sam." I don't know a lot about the movie, but my guess is that Goldberg probably improved most of it, because the dialog is so quick and on its toes. That scene in the bank is an absolute dialog masterpiece. It flows so well and everything comes out so naturally. Really well done.

Mostly the movie means holding on to every second and enjoying it, because you never know when things will change. They loved each other a lot, but some things weren't wrapped up before he passed. For instance, "Sam" never said "I love you" and that caused "Molly" some hurt. Then they were talking about marriage in the scene right before he was murdered. The fact is that as some things change there will never be full wrap ups. We will always be wondering "what if" or "what about that." All we should be doing is being grateful for the time we had when we were with that person. Another thing that I learned from this movie is being true to yourself and your morals are hard, but once you do you will be rewarded within yourself. You gain respect for yourself. "Oda Mae" is always trying to run from tense situations, but "Sam" teaches her, unintentionally, that she needs to do the right thing. Once she does she realizes that she really is that person. The kind hearted person who does things for people, because it's right.

What a great movie. This is definitely a movie that if you haven't seen it in awhile then you need to pick it up again. It's one of those movies that we forget and then remember all over again. I can definitely see why it was nominated for best picture. While Jerry Zucker has directed many movies, this is his best. I know...."Airplane!" was good too, but "Ghost" is definitely his best! You want to fight about it? I thought not:)

Anyways, I am off to make my day!

Have a good one:)

Hey everyone:)

Easter was great and I hope everyone Else's was too. I was reading my handy dandy Entertainment Weekly yesterday and realized that Anthony Minghella died. I was a little sad. His films were great. "English Patient" was a bittersweet love story and had some really gorgeous elements in it. That movie ran away with itself at the Academy Awards that year too. What he is most none for in my eyes is "Cold Mountain." That movie touched me and inspired me as an actress. With his great directing of Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, the film showed me how we can transform ourselves. The beautiful story made it even more inspiring. It is one of those movies that reminds me why I like to do what I do. I am very grateful to him for that.

He passed away from hemorrhaging during surgery to remove a tumor. It's a tragic pass, but his memory lives on through "English Patient" and "Cold Mountain", it's like leaving two pieces of his soul for all to see. I wish his family left over the best.

Atonement " begins on joyous gossamer wings, and descends into an abyss of tragedy and loss. Its opening scenes in an English country house between the wars are like a dream of elegance, and then a 13-year-old girl sees something she misunderstands, tells a lie and destroys all possibility of happiness in three lives, including her own.

The structure of the McEwan novel and this film directed by Joe Wright is relentless. How many films have we seen that fascinate in every moment and then, in the last moments, pose a question about all that has gone before, one that forces us to think deeply about what betrayal and atonement might really entail?

Wright, who also directed Knightley in his first film, "Pride and Prejudice," shows a mastery of nuance and epic, sometimes in adjacent scenes. In the McEwan novel, he has a story that can hardly fail him and an ending that blindsides us with its implications. This is one of the year's best films, a certain best picture nominee

Hey everyone:)

I am loving this funny title....it cracks me up. Hey there! It is a beautifully cold morning here in Oregon and I was staying the night at my brothers' house in town. I am on their computer right now while they patiently wait for it.They're nice. Last night I got the chance to watch the movie "Brokeback Mountain" for the first time. It was as good as everyone told me it was. What a great movie! I asked one of my brother's to watch it with me, but he was actually too scared to watch it, which is funny, because he is all for gay rights, but he was staying away from the screen and all this kind of weird stuff. I guess sometimes the male sex is taught that they will catch something. Ridiculous, but true.

Anyways, about the movie. This title comes from the fact that in the movie we have two characters who fall in love and happen to each be men. It is a love story, but not in the traditional sense. Naturally, in the southern states (and when you are a cowboy) being gay is just not considered proper in the '70s. Both the men are married to two women played by Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams. The movie was beautifully directed and tactfully so. It was shot just as if it was a man and women falling in love, which it should, but it is a rarity now-a-days when the media portrays a homosexual relationship. I appreciated this movie a lot.

Heath Ledger plays "Ennis", the cowboy uncomfortable with his homosexual relationship. It is only that he witnessed the terrible death of a man when at the age of nine. His dad did not look well on that sort of thing, nor did a lot of other different people in this time. That was a really good performance of his. The way he talked out of the side of his mouth was perfect. How many cowboys have you seen who talk like that? In the famous "I can't quit you" scene, his tough vulnerability really showed through and made you see how a quiet man like that loves. Let's talk about Jake Gyllenhall as "Jack" the cowboy who is a little more comfortable with his love and constantly wishes for a life with his lover. He did well at playing the more emotional and vulnerable partner. Although I have to say that I enjoyed Heath Ledger's performance a little more than Gyllenhall. I think it is because Ledger used less of himself and more of the character and I always enjoy that. Don't get me wrong, Gyllenhall did very good. You can feel his yearning and happiness through the whole piece. Another actor I have to mention is Michelle Williams as "Alma," the wife of "Ennis". I had grown up watching her on "Dawson's Creek." Everyone is always talking about what a great indie actor she has become, but I have never had a chance to see one. Well, now I have. She is a real natural. She has this strength in her that you wouldn't expect of her tiny self, but it is a natural strength that really delivers. There is a scene in which "Alma" tells "Ennis" how she found out he was gay and the way she reacts to his anger was so good....very good in fact.

The directing was the best part. Ang Lee did a really good job telling this love story with a level head. A lot of times you get the directors for homosexual love films and either they are trying to shove it in your face or they are trying to shy away from the fact that these normal human beings kiss and get into intimate relations. Ang Lee had the perfect balance. The movie was soft and beautiful and very natural. The cinematography was also beautiful. The way the cinematography paints the picture of the film is great. I love all those shots up on the Brokeback Mountain, they emit the strength and vulnerability of the landscape that is like the subconscious of the two men. Then there is the music which was planned perfectly. Most of the film was made up of just the soft sounds of the landscape and how it sounds at time, but then there are the moments when music is inserted to emit emotion. For instance, again the "I Can't Quit You" scene they pump up that music to help you feel the love and feeling of the last time the characters see each other.

The importance of the film is in the fact that it tells us to grab onto love and to not let it get away. Because "Ennis" is not comfortable enough to be completely and totally involved in the relationship, he loses "Jack" in an accident. We never know completely what we have until it is gone. We should never regret, but we should always hold onto those moments and love in that moment as we know we can. That ties in with the whole bit about love. That is what this movie is all about. Loving and be loved. There is no more to it. We have those loves of our lives and they are there either for a short period of time or a longer time. They impact our lives. They change us. That's what we love about it. Greatest feeling in the world.

I really enjoyed it and I actually would wish that everyone would see it at least once. Especially since the tragic death of Heath Ledger. His performance lives up to his name. While death cannot make us enjoy a movie more it can make us more observant of the movie and more focused on that person when watching the film. It's a must see film. Great performances and beautifully directing. What more could you want?

Okay, I am off again. I hope you enjoy the movie when you see it!

Have a great day:)

Hey everyone:)

So, here I am on the computer at 6:30 in the morning. I thought I would never have considered myself one of those computer people that gets up early to write articles and blog. I guess I am! What can I say? It's one of those things that keeps life interesting. So, the other day I was sitting around deciding what movie I wanted to watch so I decided to pick up "Romeo and Juliet." Not the 70s version but the Baz Luhrmann version. I love this movie. I think it is a great way for the new generation to familiarize themselves with Shakespeare. I know there is a lot of guns and violence, but it also is teaching the misuse of violence and the consequences of its actions. Obviously, I wouldn't suggest little kids watching it, but teenagers, yes. I have always been a HUGE Shakespeare fan and I think that Baz Luhrmann did more than enough justice to his work. He explores the work in a way that I have never thought of and presents the work as an artwork of genius proportions. For those of you who don't know the plot line (or it never got pounded into your head in high school...LUCKY), it is about two kids from rivalry families who fall in love and getting married behind said families' backs. What results is chaos, violence, and eventually death.

Let's talk about the acting, because it was absolutely phenomenal. Shakespeare is hard to speak. You can speak it, but the tricky part is knowing what everything means and making it flow with the proper amount of emotion. After all, Shakespeare is poetry and if spoken wrong can sound extremely over-dramatic. Everyone did a great job displaying emotion with the correct dialog (no room for improve here). Leonardo DiCaprio plays the part of "Romeo" (one of the star-crossed lovers). His performance is very inspiring. While early on in his career his performances can come off a little weak, it worked in his favor for this movie. Romeo is the romantically inclined and impulsive teenager from the Montague family. If anyone has seen "Titanic" they know that DiCaprio is both of those things. He does a good job. One of the best performances goes to Claire Danes as "Juliet," who is the young and very much in love teenager from the Capulet family. Claire Danes has this open, natural vulnerability that makes "Juliet" into a much loved and a much feeled for character. The suicide scene makes you cry so much just because she is so natural and honest with her emotions. She is always refreshing to watch in a movie. The silver medal for performance value has to go to John Leguizamo as "Tybalt Capulet." While another actor could just throw away the role, because it is a smaller part, Leguizamo relishes in it and puts touches on it that only he could do. "Tybalt" is the head of the Capulet gang, the cousin of "Juliet" and a violence seeker. We see vulnerability in him only at the point of Mercutio's death. He puts truth to "there is no small parts, just small actors."

What can I say about the directing? I may be partial to it, because I am in love with Baz Luhrmann's directing. "Moulin Rouge" is still one of my favorite movies of all time. The way this whole thing was put together makes you feel like you are in a piece of artwork. At certain points you feel like you are on a drug trip. Most importantly, Luhrmann has the ability to make you feel like you are on a whole different planet, place, and time. The party scene is probably the best example of that. It is basically from the view point of "Romeo." "Romeo" just happens to be on LSD. So, the way the scene is shot and put together is incredible. Also, the scenic design was awe inspiring and used to give you clues and symbols. Again, in the suicide scene it is so beautifully lit and shining with almost an internal light that you can feel that they are close to death whether or not they know it. And the music....it was the only stuff not written by Shakespeare and again it helped add a more modern feel. That way it creates a wider audience. The music helped along the emotions in the piece too.

If anybody has read "Romeo and Juliet" they know the themes. Let's talk about the violence theme. It gets you no where, in so many words. In the play we really do not see why the families are feuding, we just know they are. In the movie we can kind of see it is because they are rivalry businesses. The consequence of violence is always death. "Tybalt's" violence resulted in "Mercutio's" death, which ended in "Tybalt's" death, which ended in both "Romeo" and "Juliet's" death. Very sad. An old feud does nothing, but cause resentment and death. Also, we have the theme of young love. While we believe the love of "Romeo and Juliet" just because they are in front of us on screen, the fact is that they are young and changing. "Romeo" is known to fall in love with women all the time. This time someone decided to bite, so he wants the marry her. He is very romantically inclined and her being a teenage girl, she gives in to the romantics. We will never know if "Romeo" and "Juliet's" love would have lasted, but what we do know is they did love. Something to think about.

It was a great movie and I would suggest every teenager to watch it. It might make that transition into reading Shakespeare at school a little easier. It is definitely easier to feel a part of the newer one, if you are in there generation, or in my generation, or in your generation. It depends on the person I guess. Off I go!

Have a great day guys:)

Hey everyone:)

It is daylight Savings Time over here, so I am up at the equivalent of 6:30 am and quite enjoying it....no one else is up. A lot of times I actually will get up at six o' clock anyways. Daylight Savings Times is always strange, because the clock in here says 7:30, but you look outside and it is still a little dark. Wow, I'm rambling. I guess the time change is affecting me (and I didn't think it would). I was just kidding about it affecting me (I can get a little dramatic early in the morning). The time change doesn't bug me. In fact, I feel quite awake, although I did work the late night shift last night. Today's my day off though, so I am feeling quite good.

Anyways, I just finished Jane Austen's book "Sense and Sensibility" and I found it quite thrilling......sounds weird, but it is quite true. I about had a heart attack when "Edward Ferris" came back to "Elinor" after she thought he was married. "Sense and Sensibility" runs along pretty much the same lines as "Pride and Prejudice," but in certain ways it isn't like it at all. It is about these three girls (in the 18th century) whose father dies and all three of them are left to their own devices (with their mother taking care of them). Now in those days all the money from the father went to men. So, that is exactly what happens, their brother receives the dough. In this book the sisters "Elinor", "Marianne," and "Margaret" are out learning to be themselves and maybe fall in love. "Elinor" falls into a pretty healthy relationship....until she finds out he is engaged. "Marianne" falls into a bad relationship with this guy who is just using her for his own sport. It all turns alright in the end, but it is one bumpy ride into the human psychology.

"Elinor" is a great character in itself, because she is so kind. She sees the good in everyone. She is also the more level-headed of all the characters. Probably one of the only characters in the book that you would consider well-rounded. My favorite character in the book is "Marianne." She has great spirit about her, but she can get very mired down in her circumstances. What I love "Marianne" for is that she gets out there, shows her heart and tries, although she falls pretty hard when she doesn't get what her little yearning heart asked for. As far as the guys go....they are never quite as strong in a Jane Austen book, but that is sort of how men were back then. Plus, we have to take into account that the book was written by a woman and, therefore; understood the girl characters over the male. "Willoughby" is one of the stronger characters. He is the one that basically seduces "Marianne" for his own means (so he can satisfy his ego). Selfish and haphazardly to the core, he brings me back to a a couple of people I have known in times go by. Then there is "Colonel Brandon" who is my absolute favorite guy character. He falls quietly in love with "Marianne" and is great friends with her sister "Elinor." He is a little older than all the guys, but he is honorable, kind, and a good friend. The most interesting part of the characters in this book is that they are so interesting psychologically. I think part of that is that the book takes part in another place and time (for me anyways).

Has anybody ever seen the movies? If I were you I would see the version with Emma Thompson ("Elinor"), Kate Winslet ("Marianne"), Hugh Grant ("Edward Ferris"), and Alan Rickman ("Colonel Brandon"). I absolutely love it. As a plus side it is not six hours (like "Pride and Prejudice"), it is a regular length movie.......although my favorite part of "Pride and Prejudice" is that it was a six hour movie....I know, I am a Jane Austen freak and I am proud of it. The movie was very good, but naturally there is not enough time to show everything that is happening in the book. There was a lot of different versions made of the movie, but take my word for it that this is the best. I think there was even a 1930s version. I can't be sure on that....

As far as themes go for the book....guess! That's right, sense and sensibility in society. "Elinor" is our pivotal character in this theme, because she is the one that represents sensibility in this book. Her only way she falters from that point is because she is in love and she refuses to see how the one she loves has done her wrong. "Marianne" is our character to represent sense. She is everything about falling into the way you feel about everything around you. She is our emotional character and, therefore; represents part the part of sense. The book is about finding a balance between the two. We need to feel with our hearts, but we also need to use our heads to check it. When they do, in the book, "Marianne" gets "Colonel Brandon" and "Elinor" gets "Edward Ferris." What a great read!

Anybody who has not tried Jane Austen has to try this book at least once. You will fall in love with the characters and Jane Austen will make you care about everything that is happening to them. My favorite Jane Austen book still is "Pride and Prejudice," but if you are a Jane Austen virgin then "Sense and Sensibility"is a good start for you.

Also, I am really excited, because I just picked up two books. I am reading one on the lead actresses of the studio era (yay) and "The Untethered Soul," because my mom told me I absolutely have to read it. So, read it I will (she's got great taste in books).

I'm off to a nice relaxing day......even if the family circus is in town (that's right my brothers are coming ). Anyways, I will talk to you all later.

Have a great day:)

Hey everyone:)

I just finished the movie "Across the Universe" on DVD. It was quite the little interesting movie there. There was certain parts of this movie that I really loved and certain things I just didn't like. For one thing, the plot wasn't really there. They pretended it was there, but it wasn't really there. They had no way to strengthen it since all they were basing the movie on was the Beatles' catalog. What they should do is worked the Beatles' songs into the movie and not the other way around. Otherwise, what they come out with is a pretty weak movie. Musicals should use the music to further the emotion and the plot line. There was none of that in this movie. What they got is a very visually stunning piece, but with little connection to the audience.

One of the best parts of the movie was the unknown talent (besides the some what known Evan Rachel Wood). It was really refreshing to see new faces and they did a terrific job of acting. Believe me when I say that the fact that there was no emotional connection with the audience had nothing to do with the acting. Evan Rachel Wood as "Lucy" did a good job playing out the frustrations of her boyfriend dying in war and her brother still in the war with soft emotion that was not overplayed. Jim Sturgess (soon to appear in "21") as "Jude," played it with enough charm and sexiness to pull off the part of a romantic lead. Plus, his voice was so natural that it really displayed his character quite well. A lot of time in old musicals you will see someone in a normal voice belt out in this weird singing voice that is almost a mock of their emotions. Mr. Sturgess makes his voice become an extension of his true feelings. The most stunning performance should go to Dana Fuchs who plays off her exceeding sixties rock and roll character "Sadie" with a truly strong energy. I wouldn't say she was doing an imitation of Janis Joplin....but she is certainly channeling some of that energy. It is mostly due in part to the fact that she probably has the strength already programmed into her personality.

"Across the Universe," directed by Julie Taymor, I must say it again, fails to connect the whole piece together. It is mostly that there is so many characters and so little time to see them all that the musical sequences can get confusing. This is quite a shame, because I think Julie Taymor is a very innovative director and a human being on top of it. If the musical sequences were put together as a string of music videos I might be judging this differently. With music videos we know that there is really no rhyme and reason to theme, but they must be visually stunning. That is what the sequences are in this film. While I admit that movies that take place in the sixties should be pretty confusing and psychedelic, it just didn't play for me in this movie. At least the visual effects in this movie are absolutely off the chart. When I watch some of the musical sequences in this film, I am absolutely taken in by how much time, effort, and artistry must have gone into this film. The "Strawberry Fields" sequence has a lot of guts. It takes a lot of artistry to approach a duet between two people who are all the way across the world from each other and doing to completely different things. Plus, who didn't love the bleeding strawberries? The whole visual effects are definitely the reason that we can feel Lucy's inner turmoil in this sequence. Another sequence to mention is "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite." The psychedelic circus takes you along for the ride with incredible visual effects (along with the costumes). Plus, Eddie Izzard as "Mr. Kite," does an incredible improve that you just have to see.

Honestly, as far as themes go they weren't that prominent. I think the most prominent one was the one about growing up. They are all adults, but in this movie that move into that arena of being mature adults. It is about these people coming together, through all different environments, to become who they are truly, through how the express themselves. The movie turns out just the way you would want it in the end (which is fine with me, since we all need a little love in the end). It's quite predictable in a good way. The problem is that the movie ends like an old movie (abruptly with no emotional payoff in the end). We are left wondering what happens to everyone afterwards.

It is worth it to pick up "Across the Universe" at least once. While again and again I say that the movie is not tied together so well, the musical sequences are well worth watching. In fact, if you can, watch the musical sequences separately, you should. You will probably get more out of it. Please watch the musical sequences, it is some of the most beautiful imagery ever. Plus, it is really exciting and fun to see the Beatles' songs re-worked into a modern musical. You will be surprised by the musical arrangements within the whole piece. If you don't like it I give you full permission to chuck the thing out the window and "across the universe." I should have been a comedian:)

Well, that's all the movie talk for today....I will come back with more on my rehearsal with the guys!

Happy Blogging:)

Hey everyone:)

You have to excuse my stupid excuse for a blog this morning, but I have been down with that nasty cold (some people are getting killed from this thing, but not me....I don't think Stephen King's super-flu could kill me), and it is a little sore this morning. I'm sure it doesn't help that I am doing laundry this morning, need to get groceries this morning, and I don't feel like going into work today, but I have to.

Now, that was grumpy me and I am going to reinvent my day. Let's start over again......

Good morning everyone! I didn't do a whole lot yesterday, but I do have a few interesting things to talk about. I am feeling under the weather, but I have a feeling that today will be the turning point. I am not going to let it get me down, because I am better from two days ago, so I am better today. I am getting all my clothes clean, going to buy some ingredients to make an Almond Cheesecake, and I am going to go to work and make some money. Yay!

I feel a lot better now (because I believe it), I love the Law of Attraction. Most of my day yesterday was sent relaxing and wearing down my cold. What I did do is re-watch the movie "Once." I had a friend e-mail me and say he thought it was the saddest movie ever. I guess I had never looked at it that way, so I decided to review the movie again and see what I thought about it. I could see his viewpoint....they didn't get together in the end, but they did better each others lives and enrich them greatly. So, I guess to my perspective not so sad, but maybe to his perspective he could see it as sad. The filmmaker only lets you see that moment in time.....those emotions in time. That is why everyone's perspective is going to be different on every film. It really depends on that person's past experiences and environments (the one's they bring with them to the film), and how they adapt them to the small window of emotions that the filmmaker has given us. We don't really get to see how happy the guy was with his girlfriend that he is estranged from. Nor do we get to see the husband that the girl is estranged from. It is all about what we bring to the movie with us.....I think it is very interesting indeed.

Have a great day:)

Hey everyone:)

Here I am again. Blogging away. I am so glad I got into blogging. I just love it to death. What a weird mood I'm in today. Anyways, my subject today is going to be Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." I absolutely love that book. It is one of my favorites (although my favorite of favorites goes to Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead"). Anyways, I just read it again for about the fourth time. Although it has been a very long time since I have read it. I enjoyed as much as I always have. Most of the time I wonder why, because I know a lot of people would find the work boring considering it is about a bunch of people from the 18th century who are busy being intertwined in each other's life. Then I realized that is exactly why I love it....I love hearing about other times and places. Plus, I love the psychology of the human mind. It is absolutely fascinating. It amazes me sometimes that they are much the same in the 18th century England as we are in 21st century United States. I mean, naturally the etiquette and the way things were are different. As people we haven't changed much. We still have pride, prejudice, jealousy, and happiness like they did back then. I think what I love most about this book is that Jane Austen wrote the lead character Elizabeth with such spirit for a girl in the 1700s. I just love it. It makes me think of me and how I would have been back then.

Now, there are two different versions of the movie. I would suggest the first one. It is one of those six hour movies where your boyfriend will be crying at the end....not because it is so good, but probably because you bribed him into this in exchange for (you know what) and he just wants the thing to end. All in all, you will enjoy it. The beautifully cast british group does so much justice to the work that even Jane Austen would be proud. If you have ever watched "Bridget Jone's Diary" then you will know that Mr. Darcy is played by the true love interest in this movie. Great actor!

As far as the new one goes.....I didn't like it as much as the old one. Everyone might hate me after this statement, but I really do not like Keira Knightly all that much. Don't get me wrong, she is good in movies where the director has to lead her around by her nose, or she is playing herself. I'm sure as a person she is really great too, but as an actress I am not all that pleased. I honestly do not think she deserved the Academy Award nomination for this movie, but she got it. The movie is fine. I just think it is really hard to not make an eight hour movie on a Jane Austen book. They are so complicated.

Anyways, I am glad to get all that out. Now on to "Sense and Sensibility....."

So, who saw the Tiffany's Valentine's Day ads? I thought these ads were great! So so cute. And there are several different version of the ad that I have come across in my perusing of the the web, however I cannot seem to find them at the moment. They are clever and encorporate the pieces of jewelry. And of course it's Tiffany's, what woman doesn't want to click thru to the Tiffany's website? Here are the ads:
This one is my favorite, and I found it at the NYT website.
There are two different banners that I have seen, both are good.
I must admit, however, that a friend pointed these out to me. For the occasion, these are some of the best online ads I have seen floating around. Anyone else seen anything interesting out there? I got an email today from Planned Parenthood. It was...well, it caused quite a stir around my office, I'll say that. If anyone is curious, let me know and I will write about it. I am just not sure how to put it into words....
