ETF/CEF Discussion: Happy October and goodbye September 2008, we won’t miss you one iota. I had a rear molar tooth extracted this morning and I have as much attachment to that tooth as I have for September ’08. With that rant out of the way, I need to state that I have modified RSI slightly and you will see it in today’s results. More and diverse fund picks are now available. So despite a negative market close, there are some RSI candidates. The picks range over the conservative consumer staples, short funds and banks. The high volatility picks, as their name implies, are quite speculative. I’m not wild about buying short funds because of how far they have run over the past year. So use care and do your homework.

With that I have moved my monies into "safe" Treasury ETFs such as TLT, TIP, and SHY. And as stops have been hit and positions have been closed what to do with this accumulated monies? I have bought GAZ and GDX since they have been bucking the market slide. I'm seeking negative market correlations which is a positive feature at this market juncture. Likewise I'm monitoring the following funds:

Yes, there are no short funds and there are a lot of financial funds, rather counterintuitive. Time will tell if these positions are profitable. We are probably looking at a long time period for this secular bear market to do its job on bringing the stock market. These are tough times that require tough strategies.

RSI’s Themes:  There were no ETF/CEF picks and only six stocks with no new names.  So I would say these are slim pickings.  Maybe there is a slight tilt towards energy.  I bought some SJT today.

nicht zu fassen! 'the breeders' haben diesmal für ihr neues album bloß knappe 6 jahre gebraucht...da müsste man ja fast meinen, dass es schrott ist, wenn es so überhastet veröffentlicht wird (anm d red: beim letzten hats 9 jahre gedauert). aber gleich entwarnung...die mädchen (und ein bursche glaub ich zur zeit) habens zum glück nicht verlernt! zwar kommt 'mountain battles' nicht an 'title tk' heran, aber das wär ja schon fast unverschämt, so was zu toppen...

außerdem gibts neues aus dem land, das uns - in sachen politiker-glaubwürdigkeit - ernsthafte konkurrenz machen will. the notwist habens endlich wieder in den gut sortierten lang-spiel-platten-fach-handel geschafft. nach dem grandiosen 'neon golden' und dem gastspiel '13 & god', eigentlich erst das zweite album der neuen 'notwist-ära'. offiziell erst im mai, gibts im gut sortierten torrent-handel bereits die promo zum laden...die schon ziemlich nach fertigem album ausschaut.

so...nun habts euch aber die konzerttipps wahrlich verdient...vielleicht noch eine tasse kaffee oder tee...könnt ein wenig dauern, bis mans durch hat:

• den anfang macht die gute 'ellen allien' aus berlin. eine meiner lieblings dj's im moment...legt nächsten freitag 11. april im planetarium auf...
  icke micke...die jungs und mädchen haben sich mal bald ein busserl von mir verdient...
• weiter gehts mit den neubauten...die sind aber bereits ausverkauft
• am 18./19.4. gibts einen tipp, für alle volksmusikfans...'elakelaiset'...bierzelt musik, die auch ohne 3 maß intus gefällt...das bierzelt heißt diesmal übrigens 'szene wien'...live sehr sehr zu empfehlen
• zwei tag draufe schlägt das singer-songwriter-herz in uns wohl ganz heftig...am montag 21.4. kommt herr 'jose gonzales' aus dem fernen göteborg zu uns ins flex...wer scrubs gern sieht, hat sicher schon mal nen song gehört...wer guten geschmack hat auch...alle andren habens nicht besser verdient, wenn sie das konzert verpassen...
• gleich am nächsten tag...22.4. ... in der arena: 'isis' ...godfather of stoner/hardcore/was-weiß ich...wer sie kennt...hat schon karten...wer nicht, bleibt zu hause und schaut 'sing & win' (geiles foto raini!)
• am 24.4. im chelsea (ich schwör mir immer wieder, dass ich zum letzten mal bei einem live act im chelsea war...aber die schweine schaffens einfach immer wieder mich zu ködern...) 'navel' und 'killed by 9v batteries'. nirvana-reinkarnation aus der schweiz und grazer noise-rock-nachwuss. ein intressantes detail am rande: beide bands sind am neuen label von patrick wagner 'louisville records'...für alle die sich nicht mehr erinnern können oder erst seit gestern einen annehmbaren musikgeschmack haben: patrick-wagner-superstar war 'surrogat' sänger/gitarrist/mastermind und kitty-yo mitbegründer...wem das nichts sagt...sofort nachrecherchieren...'gib mir alles'! sag ich da bloß!
• am selben tag beginnt das donaufestival in krems...da fang ich jetzt nicht an...das könnt wirklich länger werden...mein favorit: 30.4. ...absolutes muss: 'xiu xiu'
• gleich an zwei tagen: 3./4.5. im b72: 'zoot woman'...für alle die gern in einem hochglanz-magazin leben möchten...
• dann...das absolute highlight des jahres (außer jimi hendrix kommt auch noch nach wien): 'shellac'!!!! einziges aktives projekt von gott steve albini ... am 6.5. in wels im schlachthof und am 7.5. in der wiener szene...in wels wird 'valina' den jungs aus übersee unter die arme greifen... die grad ihr neues kreis-förmiges-ding veröffentlich haben...a tempo! a tempo!...zum zweiten mal nach vagabond von herrn albini persönlich produziert...melodischer noiserock aus linz...einer der östereichischen spezialitäten!!
• noch lange kein ende in sicht: 11.5. 'deus' im flex...aushänge belgier mit neuen album im trolley...
• am 18.5. schlägt das bereits erwähnte herz ganz wild...'boy omega' bassist und vollblut singer-songwriter...'björn kleinhenz'...achhhh...ich freu mich dich wieder zu sehn björn!
• am tag drauf...zum zweiten mal in kurzer zeit...'cocorosie'...ich hoff da muss ich nichts mehr dazu sagn!
• am 21.5. dann gleich ein doppelpack: 'trail of dead'...die wahrscheinlich guadsten texaner wieder mal in der aren...und...'fuckhead' die linzer sind die wohl die einzige österreicher, die ernsthaft behaupten können, dass sie hardcore machen...nicht nur auf musikalischer ebene...
• am 24./25.5. der zweite absolute pflicht-termin nach shellac: 'melt banana' aus tokyo...die mädscha wissen, was noise-rock heißt!! am 24. in der wanne und am 25. in wels wieder im schl8hof...auch diesmal super gehhilfen aus linz: 'delilah' ... an diesem punkt nichts genaueres, da ich sicher noch mindestens 387 posts über delilah machn werd...also mal reinhörn bei myspace und drauf hoffen, nicht vom auto überfahren zu werden, bevor sie wieder mal in wien sind!!!
• am 26.5. dann ein termin für alle nostalgiker: 'dinosaur jr' in der arena...
• 28.5. ...noise vom feinsten aus den staaten: 'paper chase'...sollte man auch gehört/gesehen haben, bevor da sensenmann sich per sms ankündigt!
• 30.5. ...und immer noch kein ende...eines der 1000en projekten von fuckhead-didi-bruckmayr: 'wipeout'...wer sich davon überzeugen möchte, dass es nicht nur dj ötzi in österreich gibt oder einfach nur auf elektronisch-erzeugte-musik steht...ja! genau! wipeout!
• dann einer meiner favoriten! 31.5. 'saul williams'...seit neuestem unter den fittichen von trent-fucking closer-rezner...ein intressanter act, vorallem was lyrics betrifft...wie schwer zu überhören ist, kommt der mann vom spoken-word...
• und am 18.6. der 'brmc' in wien...für alle, die sie nach 'howl' aus dem gedächtnis gelöscht haben: ja...die sieht man auch in '9 songs'...
• und damit die nostalgiker nicht zu kurz kommen: am 2.7. 'helmet'...warm anziehn!!

The first three Wisdom Tree funds are not especially income funds but rather index funds that follow a dividend weighted index rather than a standard cap weighted index.  All three of these funds are international to boot.  And look at all the European ETFs.  Certainly a strong showing.

The RSI stock engine had a bunch of picks too which also required screwing back the parameters in the algorithm.  So here they are:

Interesting there are two Canadian materials stocks that made the grade.  AMZN and SYK are repeat picks.  LYO is going through a merger deal, so that needs to be considered in any decision. Likewise with VMSI, the stock price looks like it is being acquired, but I cannot find any news on that. Many interesting stock selections for your consideration.

And lastly are the fallen guys in the CFK portfolio.  CFK spewed out a ton on picks, so I had to narrow the outcome to the following:

What can I say about this list?  These have fallen hard in this past correction.  They are liberally salted with value, financials and consumer funds.  Are these poised to rise?  If you believe the end of the correction is at hand, these could be the leaders going forward.  Time will tell.

In total this is a huge list, even after screwing it back.  If you have new monies to commit to the market and you believe the correction is over, you have some great choices.   

In spite of the rebound today, RSI has only one pick and a rather conservative one at that.  After such strong gains I was expecting more.  This baffles me, but I cannot come up with the answer to that puzzle, so here is it:

• IXJ - iShares S&P Global Healthcare Sector Index Fund

This must be a future growth area, global growth is certainly an anticipation of the growing wealth around the world.  I read that that this is a growing area in China as the population moves up the prosperity scale.  IXJ traded today around 32,000 shares so it is a bit thin.  Nuff said.

On the CFK front there are many, but the list is too long (16) for me to really comment on.  This list is the usual suspects of the beaten down ..  I could have predicted that they would contain banks, homebuilders and financials/banks.  So here they are:

They are a slew of picks. Usually I exclude thinly traded issues, but I bumped up that filter to allow the full flavor to come out.  I like to see the themes.  A few words about these picks. They all have been in a serious correction but had a big bounce up yesterday and today.

I was asked if RSI was predicting a FED rate cut with yesterday's picks.  What RSI picked was what had the best price/volume trends.  If buyers were moving into these ETFs, I believe RSI was keying on this.

I've had many queries about the details of RSI's methodology.  Everyone wants to know what moving averages do I use?  This weekend I hope to compose a posting that discusses this question and others, so hang in there.

A few words about these picks. They all have been in a serious correction but had a big bounce up today. It will take some more upside price appreciation to exceed the price action points cited above. It may take a few days or weeks. But if you are anxious to add some money these might be good opportunities.
