Today in the market, Wednesday, October 01, 2008: U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as tight credit mark

Today in the market, Wednesday, October 01, 2008: U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as tight credit markets and bleak economic data kept investors on edge before the Senate votes on a revamped financial sector rescue plan that was initially rejected by lawmakers.

Trading was volatile a day after Wall Street gave its best daily performance in six years, and investors worried about how effective a $700 billion bank rescue in the United States would be in averting recession. Dow off 0.2 pct, S&P off 0.5 pct, Nasdaq off 1.1 pct (commentary courtesy of Reuters)

ETF/CEF Discussion: Happy October and goodbye September 2008, we won’t miss you one iota. I had a rear molar tooth extracted this morning and I have as much attachment to that tooth as I have for September ’08. With that rant out of the way, I need to state that I have modified RSI slightly and you will see it in today’s results. More and diverse fund picks are now available. So despite a negative market close, there are some RSI candidates. The picks range over the conservative consumer staples, short funds and banks. The high volatility picks, as their name implies, are quite speculative. I’m not wild about buying short funds because of how far they have run over the past year. So use care and do your homework.

Yes, I did say no blog today, but since I'll be traveling on Thursday, I wanted to share the following with my loyal followers.

As I have been urging

Get defensive

Set tight stops

Don't lose money

Remember bullet #3

With that I have moved my monies into "safe" Treasury ETFs such as TLT, TIP, and SHY. And as stops have been hit and positions have been closed what to do with this accumulated monies? I have bought GAZ and GDX since they have been bucking the market slide. I'm seeking negative market correlations which is a positive feature at this market juncture. Likewise I'm monitoring the following funds:

DVY - ISHARES DOW SEL DIV close above $57.00
HRP - HRPT PROPERTIES close above $8.00
IAT - ISHARES DJ US RBIF close above $35.00
ITB - ISHARES DJ US HCIF close above $18.50
KBE - SPDR KBW BANK ETF close above $37.00
KRE - SPDR KBW REGIONAL BA close above $37.00
PEY - POWERSHARES ETF close above $11.00
RKH - ML REGIONBK HLDR close above $115.00
SDY - SPDR S&P DIVIDEND ET close above $51.00
XHB - SPDR HOMEBUILDERS ET close above $19.32

Yes, there are no short funds and there are a lot of financial funds, rather counterintuitive. Time will tell if these positions are profitable. We are probably looking at a long time period for this secular bear market to do its job on bringing the stock market. These are tough times that require tough strategies.

Today in the market, Thursday April 17, 2008: Earnings news sent stocks down for most of the day, but they managed to fight back and end mostly unchanged for the day. Its just part of a healthy digestion process necessary for it to move higher.

RSI’s Themes: There were no ETF/CEF picks and only six stocks with no new names. So I would say these are slim pickings. Maybe there is a slight tilt towards energy. I bought some SJT today.

Stocks Medium Volatility:

HOS - Hornbeck Offshore Services Inc.

NKE - Nike Inc.

ORB - Orbital Sciences Corp.

SJT - San Juan Basin Royalty Trust

VIV - Vivo Participacoes S.A.

WW - Watson Wyatt & Co.

Despite the slim pickings there are some great companies represented here. Just think, of the tens of thousands of stocks and ADRs traded on the US exchanges only these six companies were picked by RSI. These are the chosen few.

Catch a Falling Knife:

RKH - Bank Regional Holders

Yes indeed this is a true falling knife. I guess someday the regional banks will recover and be on their way again. Time will tell....

...a haufn geiler bands in wien!!

This was a huge up day plus two winning days in a row. European markets were also strong, but

This was a huge up day plus two winning days in a row. European markets were also strong, but Asia was generally flat. Is the correction over? I don't know but RSI is very positive today. Starting with the ETF engine, it had some 40 ETF picks and I had to turn the screws down and limited it to 13. Okay here they are:

DIM Wisdom Tree Intl Mid Cap Dividend Fund
DLS Wisdom Tree International Small Cap Dividend Fund
DOO Wisdom Tree International Dividend Top 100 Fund
EFV iShares MSCI Value
EWG Germany iShares
EWL Switzerland iShares
EZU EMU Index iShares
IEV Europe 350 iShares
IWP Russell Mid-Cap Growth iShares
IYM Basic Matls iShares
VAW Vanguard Materials VIPERs
VGK Vanguard European VIPERs
XME SPDR S&P Metals & Mining Index

The first three Wisdom Tree funds are not especially income funds but rather index funds that follow a dividend weighted index rather than a standard cap weighted index. All three of these funds are international to boot. And look at all the European ETFs. Certainly a strong showing.

The RSI stock engine had a bunch of picks too which also required screwing back the parameters in the algorithm. So here they are:

AMZN Amazon.com, Inc.
EXPE Expedia, Inc
FDG/UN.TO Fording Canadian Coal Trust
HSC Harsco Corp.
LYO Lyondell Chemical Co.
POT.TO Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc.
SYK Stryker Corp.
VMSI Ventana Medical Systems, Inc.

Interesting there are two Canadian materials stocks that made the grade. AMZN and SYK are repeat picks. LYO is going through a merger deal, so that needs to be considered in any decision. Likewise with VMSI, the stock price looks like it is being acquired, but I cannot find any news on that. Many interesting stock selections for your consideration.

And lastly are the fallen guys in the CFK portfolio. CFK spewed out a ton on picks, so I had to narrow the outcome to the following:

DVY iShares DJ Select Dividend Index Fund
IJR SP SmCap 600 iShares
IWD Russell 1000 Value iShares
IWN Russell 2000 Value iShares
IWS Russell Mid-Cap Value iShares
IYF Financial iShares
IYT iShares DJ Transportation Average Index Fund
KBE SPDR KBW Bank Index ETF
KRE SPDR KBW Regional Banking Index ETF
RKH Bank Regional Holders
RTH Retail Holders
SMH Semiconductor Holders
XLF Financials Select Sector SPDR
XLY Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR
XRT SPDR S&P Retail Index

What can I say about this list? These have fallen hard in this past correction. They are liberally salted with value, financials and consumer funds. Are these poised to rise? If you believe the end of the correction is at hand, these could be the leaders going forward. Time will tell.

In total this is a huge list, even after screwing it back. If you have new monies to commit to the market and you believe the correction is over, you have some great choices.

There is a thought that today's action was a short covering rally. Some have suggested that there were a lot of shorts that entered the game late and thus got squeezed in the process. Were all the market players reading my blog from yesterday pleading to cover all shorts? Whatever, the markets jumped up on the opening and held their gains throughout the day. Is the correction over? A one day rebound cannot be judged as a correction ending event. Look for the remainder of the week and the days leading up to Thanksgiving for a clue. This could be a prelude to the Santa Claus rally.

In spite of the rebound today, RSI has only one pick and a rather conservative one at that. After such strong gains I was expecting more. This baffles me, but I cannot come up with the answer to that puzzle, so here is it:

IXJ - iShares S&P Global Healthcare Sector Index Fund

This must be a future growth area, global growth is certainly an anticipation of the growing wealth around the world. I read that that this is a growing area in China as the population moves up the prosperity scale. IXJ traded today around 32,000 shares so it is a bit thin. Nuff said.

On the CFK front there are many, but the list is too long (16) for me to really comment on. This list is the usual suspects of the beaten down .. I could have predicted that they would contain banks, homebuilders and financials/banks. So here they are:

DES - Wisdom Tree Small Cap Dividend Fund
DVY - iShares DJ Select Dividend Index Fund
IAK - iShares Dow Jones U.S. Insurance
IAT - iShares Dow Jones U.S. Regional Banks
IYG - Financial Services iShares
JKL - iShares Morningstar Small Value Index Fund
KBE - SPDR KBW Bank Index
KIE - SPDR KBW Insurance Index
PEY - PowerShares High Yield Equity Dividend
PMR - PowerShares Dynamic Retail Portfolio
RKH - Bank Regional Holders
RSF - RMK Strategic Income Fund Inc.
RTH - Retail Holders
SDY - SPDR S&P Dividend Index
XHB - SPDR S&P Homebuilders Index
XRT - SPDR S&P Retail Index

All these are ETFs except RSF with is a CEF. All these represent very speculative funds and I don't recommend any of them. I do buy CFK picks at times (when I'm bottom fishing) and right now both my CFK holdings, IRL and KBE are still losing positions. I guess I jumped on them too early. That may be the case for these funds ... too early. So look at them with a skeptic eye and do your homework.

Well a horrible week ended on a strong up note. Many diverse factors were at work in the markets today, from the FED discount rate cut to options expiration to bargain hunters stepping in to short sellers covering. Big question .. Is this the bottom?? Take your pick. Speaking of picks, RSI came up with more fallen angels that favor the small and micro cap, banking, real estate, dividends, and more. Many of these candidates are thinly traded (I've included today's volume) and the volatility runs from high to low, so please use your best judgement. Here they are:

RSI Engine #1

ELV - SPDR DJ Wilshire Large Cap Value vol 142,800
FDM - First Trust Dow Jones Select Micro Cap Index vol 16,300
HTD - John Hancock Tax- Advantaged Dividend Income Fund vol 135,600 above $18.40
IJR - SP SmCap 600 iShares vol 1,865,290 *
IJS - SmCap 600 Value iShares vol 95,900
IWC - iShares Russell Microcap Index Fund vol 140,200
IYR - Real Estate iShares vol 14,077,148
JKL - iShares Morningstar Small Value Index Fund vol 7,900
PHJ - PowerShares High Growth Rate Dividend Achievers Portfolio vol 10,200
PTY - Pimco Corporate Opportunity vol 497,100 above $14.70
PUI - PowerShares Dynamic Utilities Portfolio vol 9,300 above $16.80
RLF - Cohen & Steers Advantage Income Realty Fund, Inc. vol 200,900 above $19.75
RQI - Cohen & Steers Quality Income Realty Fund Inc. vol 261,400 above $18.50
SDY - SPDR S&P Dividend Index vol 81,200 *
VFH - Vanguard Financials VIPERs vol 94,900
VVR - Van Kampen Senior Income vol 1,313,800

RSI Engine #2

DES - Wisdom Tree Small Cap Dividend Fund vol 54,000
IAT - iShares Dow Jones U.S. vol 101,400
KBE - SPDR KBW Bank Index ETF vol 1,998,590
KRE - SPDR KBW Regional Banking Index ETF vol 2,345,100
PEY - PowerShares High Yield Equity Dividend vol 229,900
RKH - Bank Regional Holders vol 152.600

They are a slew of picks. Usually I exclude thinly traded issues, but I bumped up that filter to allow the full flavor to come out. I like to see the themes. A few words about these picks. They all have been in a serious correction but had a big bounce up yesterday and today.

I was asked if RSI was predicting a FED rate cut with yesterday's picks. What RSI picked was what had the best price/volume trends. If buyers were moving into these ETFs, I believe RSI was keying on this.

I've had many queries about the details of RSI's methodology. Everyone wants to know what moving averages do I use? This weekend I hope to compose a posting that discusses this question and others, so hang in there.

FYI - I bought KBE today as it crossed above $54,00.

What a day! You can read about it elsewhere on the web, so I'll forgo the commentary. Is the bottom in place? I don't know about the future, all I can do is turn the crank on RSI and see what gives. And the answer looks like a bunch of fallen angels, namely in the REIT and banking sectors. RSI's picks are:

ICF - Realty Major iShares above $87.75
KBE - SPDR KBW Bank Index ETF above $54.00
PBE - PowerShares Dynamic Biotech & Genome Portfolio above $19.00 *
RKH - Bank Regional Holders above $150.50
RWR - streetTRACKS Dow Jones Wilshire REIT Fund above $78.00
VNQ - Vanguard REIT VIPERs above $68.50

A few words about these picks. They all have been in a serious correction but had a big bounce up today. It will take some more upside price appreciation to exceed the price action points cited above. It may take a few days or weeks. But if you are anxious to add some money these might be good opportunities.

FYI - My positions in GLD, IHI, and EWP were stopped out, so I have some new money to add to this market. I did buy SBR.
