US Rejects Outside Probe of Canadian Sent to Syria

WASHINGTON - U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said on Wednesday he had rejected a request from lawmakers that an outside special counsel investigate the case of a Canadian taken off a plane in New York and sent to Syria, where he says he was tortured.

Mukasey said under questioning at a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing that he did not believe that a special counsel was warranted “at this time.”

Maher Arar, a Syrian-born software engineer, was taken into custody by U.S. officials during a 2002 stopover in New York while on his way home to Canada and then deported to Syria because of suspected links to al Qaeda.

Arar says he was imprisoned in Syria for a year and tortured. His case has become a sore spot in U.S.-Canada relations.

Three committee Democrats sent a letter on July 10 asking Mukasey to appoint an outside special counsel to investigate and prosecute any violations of federal criminal laws.

They said a special counsel would ensure the investigation is thorough, impartial and independent, and would show the U.S. government was willing to conduct a fair investigation into serious allegations of wrongdoing.

Two lawmakers who sought the outside investigation, including committee chairman Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, criticized Mukasey’s decision.

Conyers said Mukasey had continued the “unfortunate tradition” of refusing to appoint a special counsel not only in the Arar case, but also for President George W. Bush’s warrantless surveillance program and for the CIA’s use of waterboarding for terrorism suspects.

Rep. William Delahunt, a Democrat from Massachusetts, cited testimony last month that U.S. officials may have sent Arar to Syria, rather than Canada, because they knew of the likelihood of torture.

“If that doesn’t trigger need for a special prosecutor, I can’t imagine what would,” he said.

Mukasey said U.S. officials received assurances from Syria that Arar would not be tortured. “Sending him to Canada could have posed a threat to our country,” Mukasey said, adding that sending him to Syria was “safer.”

Maria LaHood, an attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York, which represents Arar in the United States, replied, “Sending Maher to Syria instead of home to Canada was certainly not safer for him, and did nothing to make the United States safer.”

She said, “The tendency of the Department of Justice to cover up its crimes is exactly why an outside prosecutor is needed.”

The department told committee members of Mukasey’s decision in a letter sent on Tuesday, the day before his appearance.

It said the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general has reopened his investigation of the Arar case while the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the role of department lawyers in the case.

“We will carefully consider the results of these efforts in determining whether any further action is appropriate,” a department official said in the letter.

The Canadian government has cleared Arar of any links to terrorist groups, has apologized and has paid him millions of dollars in compensation.

Vitamin D may curb type 2 diabetes risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - During a 17-year follow-up of roughly 4,000 men and women, researchers found that individuals with higher blood levels of vitamin D had a 40 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those with lower levels of this vitamin.

"It has been suggested that vitamin D might be involved in processes leading to type 2 diabetes," Dr. Paul Knekt from the National Public Health Institute, Helsinki, told Reuters Health. "Human evidence from population studies is, however, missing."

During follow-up, 187 people developed type 2 diabetes. After adjusting for age, sex, and month when blood samples were obtained, a statistically significant inverse association was observed between the blood vitamin D level and the development of type 2 diabetes.

People with the highest vitamin D levels had a 40 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes as those with the lowest vitamin D levels. Knekt and colleagues report in the journal Diabetes Care.

This association was attenuated somewhat after further adjustments were made for potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including body weight, physical activity level, and smoking.

"Vitamin D comes from the diet (mainly from fish), supplements and sun exposure," Knekt noted. "Previous human studies have suggested that high intake of fish fat is related to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Our diabetes finding is thus in line with the suggestion of beneficial health effects of fish," Knekt said.

La breve nota informa que Fernández era una hombre cercano al matrimonio de los Kirchner y anuncia que su reemplazo será Sergio Massa, "alcalde de la localidad de Tigre".

El Mundo, también seguir de los avatares políticos argentinos, anuncia que "Cristina Kirchner remodela su Gobierno tras la crisis del conflicto del campo". Juan Ignacio Irigaray, el autor del texto, afirma que tras la "guerra" con el campo la presidenta remodela su Gabinete y da cuenta de los cambios en la Jefatura de Gabinete y la Subsecretaria de Agricultura, con el ingreso de Carlos Cheppi para este último cargo. I remember a couple of years back telling my friends who were on their way to see United 93 that it was pure propaganda and not believe a word of it. They replied in disbelief and questioned my assertion, but I quickly replied that the movie was released just five years after the events of 9/11 and that we were still in the midst of a war started on the premise that terrorists from Saudi Arabia attacked us. Then we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Well United 93 is propaganda simply because it supports the official story. True or not, it's still propaganda. Though the trial the man, dubbed “Osama bin Laden’s driver”, is primarily functioning as a show piece for the Bush administration’s “war on terror”, some interesting information emerged from the Guantanamo Bay naval base yesterday in the form of a direct admission from a US prosecutor that the fourth plane was “shot down”.

The revelation came during assertions from representatives for the prosecution that Salim Hamdan had detailed knowledge of the intended target of the fourth hijacked plane on 9/11.

A Reuters report states:

…prosecutor Timothy Stone told the six-member jury of U.S. military officers who will decide Hamdan’s guilt or innocence that Hamdan had inside knowledge of the 2001 attacks on the United States because he overheard a conversation between bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

“If they hadn’t shot down the fourth plane it would’ve hit the dome,” Stone, a Navy officer, said in his opening remarks.

The tribunal’s chief prosecutor, Col. Lawrence Morris, later explained that Stone was quoting Hamdan in evidence that will be presented at trial. Morris declined to say if the “dome” was a reference to the U.S. Capitol.

The report goes on to state “United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in rural Pennsylvania. U.S. officials have never stated it was shot down although rumors saying that abound to this day.”

Were Stone’s words a “slip of the tongue” in the vain of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s when he also told reporters that flight 93 was shot down?

Flight 93 had an 8 mile wide debris field, a fact that does not tally with official story that the aircraft was fully intact in the seconds before it hit the ground.

Large pieces of fuselage were also recovered from a marina in Indian Lake, a couple of miles away from the crash site, and the planes engines, which according to the laws of physics should have plunged deep into the ground along with the rest of the airliner were never found.

Only a one-ton segment of an engine was ever recovered, again more than a mile from the crash site, which the FBI declared had ‘bounced’ there.

The wreckage from flight 93 remains under armed guard inside Iron Mountain.

Eyewitness accounts, in addition to one call from the flight, also describe loud engine noises, white smoke and parts falling from the flight as it approached its final resting place.

We have previously reported on credible individuals who claim to have personally talked with the pilots who shot the plane down.

Rambam found "the accused" catting around in the guise of a dominatrix.

Rambam often says that "privacy is dead."

Rambam, a/k/a Steve Rombom, has a colorful history, too.

He also has at least one peculiar enemy, who says he is revealing Rambam's own secrets.

Commercially Engineered Bees Spread Disease to Wild Bees

WASHINGTON - Disease spread to wild bees from commercially bred bees used for pollination in agriculture greenhouses may be playing a role in the mysterious decline in North American bee populations, researchers said on Tuesday.

Bees pollinate numerous crops, and scientists have been expressing alarm over their falling numbers in recent years in North America. Experts warn the bee disappearance eventually could harm agriculture and the food supply.

Scientists have been struggling to understand the recent decline in various bee populations in North America. For example, a virus brought from Australia has been implicated in massive honeybee deaths last year.

Canadian researchers studied another type of bee, the bumblebee, near two large greenhouse operations in southern Ontario where commercially reared pollination bees are used in the growing of crops such as tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers.

The researchers first observed that the commercial bumblebees regularly flew in and out of vents in the sides of the greenhouses, escaping from the facilities.

The researchers then devised a mathematical model to predict how disease might spread from this “spillover” of runaway commercial bees to their wild cousins.

The model predicted a relatively slow build-up of infection in nearby wild bumblebee populations over weeks or months culminating in a burst of transmission generating an epidemic wave that could affect nearly all of wild bees exposed.

The model also predicted a drop-off in infection rates as you get further from the greenhouses.

GREENHOUSE BUMBLEBEE PARASITES

The researchers then sampled wild bumblebee populations around the greenhouses, catching bees in butterfly nets, holding them in vials and taking them back to a laboratory to screen for pathogens, including testing their feces.

The patterns that had been predicted by their mathematical model were borne out by studying the wild bees, they said.

Most of the parasites in the wild bumblebees were found to be at normal levels except for one intestinal parasite known as Crithidia bombi that is common in commercial bee colonies but typically absent in wild bumblebees.

The researchers found that up to half of wild bumblebees near the greenhouses were infected with this parasite.

“All of the different species of bumblebees that we sampled around greenhouses showed the same pattern: really high levels of infection near greenhouses and then declining levels of infection as you moved out,” said Michael Otterstatter of the University of Toronto, one of the researchers.

“It was quite obvious that this was coming from the greenhouses and it was a general adverse effect on the bumblebees,” Otterstatter added in a telephone interview.

He said the parasite weakens and often kills bees. The “spillover” of disease from commercial colonies may be a factor in the decline of bee populations in North America, he added.

However, Satish Sharma, the national vice-president of the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences, warns that the constellation that saved the prime minister this time round, might turn against Singh in September:

"Currently, the planet Jupiter is strong in Manmohan Singh’s horoscope. In addition, Saturn, which is in Leo, is protecting the 10th house in the country's chart, which indicates that the government's prestige would be saved. However, this position will not continue after September and there is every possibility that the government would not be able to complete its full term and elections will have to be preponed," he told the ToI.

Rajan Chopra, another astrologer who spoke to Reuters' reporter Rituparna Bhowmik, also predicted that UPA would have won the confidence vote, but he said it had nothing to do with Singh's astrological horoscope. He argued that it was all thanks to Sonia Gandhi: "[She] is the main force behind [the PM],” he told Reuters.

Nothing new about that.

Singh, being a true gentleman, gave his main opponent LK Advani, who predicted that the prime minister would have lost the trust vote, a piece of advice:

"I do not expect Shri Advani to change his thinking...but for his sake and India’s sake, I urge him to at least change his astrologer so that he gets more accurate predictions of things to come.”

In an otherwise decent story about the trial of Salim Hamdan -- Osama bin Laden's driver -- at Gitmo, Reuters writer Jim Loney inserts a paragraph sure to warm the hearts of 9/11 conspiracy 'tards everywhere:

United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in rural Pennsylvania. U.S. officials have never stated it was shot down although rumors saying that abound to this day.

U.S. officials have never stated it was shot down because it wasn't. It was brought down during a pitched battle between the flight's passengers and its jihadi hijackers. The evidence is so clear -- from passenger cell phone calls to the cockpit voice recordings and witnesses in Shanksville, PA -- that it beggars belief Reuters would include such a ridiculous line in this story.

Flight 93 came up in Hamdan's trial as the prosecution attempted to establish just how far this guy was inside Al Qaeda. The assertion is he's one of the few people who knew what Flight 93's intended target was: apparently the dome of the Capitol in Washington.

I thought the myths around 9/11 had been effectively debunked years ago. The superb Popular Mechanics treatment alone should have killed most of the Troofer roaches, and the happy demise of that piece o' shit web doc Loose Change should have been the nail in the coffin.

So to see "rumours" about United 93 pop up in a Gitmo story in 2008 with no effort to establish their accuracy, that's truly a WTF moment.

Lal Krishna Advani missed a great opportunity...

Every body knows that Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in general, and Lal Krishna Advani in particular, does not oppose the Indo-US nuclear deal in principle. If an identical deal was offered to NDA (National Democratic Alliance) when it was in power, BJP and it's allies would have accepted the deal anytime. Then why this opposition? It is politics 101 as usual. Advani couldn't help but take a dig at the Prime Minister during the no-confidence debate yesterday (July 22) that it is a payback time for Congress Party. He was absolutely right. The question is, does it help him in the current circumstances politically? This is where he and his party has made a big miscalculation. If Advani wants to be the next Prime Minister of India, he should have been much more magnanimous and above this petty squabble. Instead, he and his party appeared to be carrying Comrade Prakash Karat's dirty diapers.

"NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government won a vote of confidence in parliament on Tuesday, ensuring the survival of the ruling coalition and a civilian nuclear deal with the United States."

Did he really win the day? Not really! It does help India a bit at the moment, not to have early elections with high inflation and oil prices to deal with. Dr Manmohan Singh has got a small window to push the much needed reforms that the Left Parties were blocking all these years. If he fails to act now and that too not fast enough, he would miss an opportunity to leave a great legacy behind. He must seize the moment and show some backbone for a change. In the meantime, the Samajwadi Party (SP) that helped the government win the vote, is bound to extract a heavy price for their support. The question is how much is enough and what exactly is the price to be paid?

As far as the India-US nuclear deal is concerned, it is not a big deal either way. The deal is a covert NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) in disguise. But in context, it does not mean much. The United States, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and the NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group) are not in a position to push around a country like India anymore. As far as 'Nuclear Energy' is concerned, it does not account for much, everyone knows that. The deal at best is symbolic. India could beat it's chest that it has been granted a 'Nuclear Power Status' by the international community. George W Bush and his European allies could wink at each other and pretend that they have been able to 'TAG' India finally. The fact of the matter is that if India ever has to test a 'Nuclear Weapon' again, it would do so no matter what.

I had only heard of Matt Harding last week when I posted about him. I thought his video was great and really uplifting. I finished my post by saying that if Matt had asked me to donate to something I probably would have....Well guess what, it looks like that is exactly what Matt is going to do.

I came across this on the AFP Blog taken from Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Matt Harding has won cult celebrity status by filming himself dancing badly around the world to the amusement of millions of Internet viewers but now he wants to get serious -- raising money for laptops for the poor.

Harding, 31, began his unusual route to fame five years ago when he quit his job as a video game maker and set off to travel the world, with a traveling pal suggesting he do the same jig he used to do in the office and film himself in different spots.

His edited clip which he posted in the fall of 2004 -- at the same time registering a website, wherethehellismatt.com -- became an Internet hit and came to the attention of executives at Cadbury's Stride chewing gum who offered to fund future trips.

His latest and third video, which runs for four-and-a-half minutes has been watched by nearly 19 million people on YouTube

Harding said it was now time take off his dancing shoes and get serious.

He met United Nations officials this month and talked to the sponsor of his video, Stride, about raising money to buy and donate laptops to the poor in Rwanda where he danced with locals and plans to go to teach them himself.

"Laptops and access to the Internet can broaden horizons tremendously. I want to do it personally, so it won't just be a care package," said Harding who has also been approached with various other offers including writing a travel journal.

Climate Report Calls For Green “New Deal”

LONDON - The world needs leaders with the vision to forge New Deal-type policies to tackle the potentially disastrous combination of climate change, high inflation and economic slowdown, a British think-tank said on Monday.

“A New Green Deal“, a report issued by the New Economics Foundation, uses the convergence of the credit crunch, climate change and booming food and fuel prices to make the case for a new economics for the 21st century.

Key points in the report are that every home must generate its own power, an oil legacy fund must be set up using windfall taxes on oil and gas firms to help pay for green transformation, and carbon should be priced according to its climate impact.

Interest rates should be cut to help investment in green energy and transport infrastructure, and monolithic financial institutions should be broken up so the failure of one would not destabilize the economy, said the NEF, an independent group.

“A credit crisis, coupled with high and rising oil prices and long-term climatic upheaval, are conspiring to create the perfect storm,” said NEF director Andrew Simms.

“Instead of desperate baling-out, we need a comprehensive plan and a new course to navigate each obstacle in this new phenomenon.

“We need a modern Green New Deal that has the scale, boldness and vision previously only seen, for example, in Roosevelt’s response to the Great Depression,” he added.

President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal was a series of programs between 1933 and 1938 aimed at helping the poor, reforming the U.S. financial system and stimulating an economy that had plunged into depression after the Wall Street crash.

URGENT ACTION NEEDED

Today, economists say global economic growth is slowing, and most scientists say urgent action is needed to stop the planet entering a period of unstoppable temperature rise caused largely by rising carbon emissions.

“The credit, climate and oil crunches are all individually serious issues, but in combination their impact could be catastrophic for our economy, and for our way of life,” said Tony Juniper, co-author of the report and former head of the environmental group Friends of the Earth.

“We need real leadership and vision to get through this, and right now we are not seeing it. Politicians from across the spectrum should signal their willingness to think differently and to embrace new ideas,” he added.

The report also calls for a low-carbon energy system, financial incentives and policies to promote energy efficiency, closer scrutiny of exotic tax avoidance instruments, a clampdown on tax havens and new capital controls.

“We need a comprehensive plan which would involve far tougher regulation of capital, changes to tax systems and a sustained programme of investment in energy conservation and renewable energy,” said Larry Elliott, economics editor of the left-leaning Guardian newspaper and co-author of the report.
