Shajar Hai Firqa-Aarayi, Ta'assub Hai Samar Iska
Yeh Woh Phal Hai Ke Jannat Se Nikalwata Hai Adam ko

When Moses returned to his people and saw them worshiping an Idol. He asked his brother Aaroon:
"What prevented you when you saw them going astray? That you followed me not? Have you have then disobeyed my order?"
Aaroon replied:
"O son of my mother! seize me not by my beard nor by my head. Verily, I feared that you would say 'You have caused a division among the children of Isreal and you have not respected my word.' "

The bold statement in the above verse, 92-94 from Chapter 20 Al-Quran, has a great lesson. Moses got satisfied with his brother's answer. Why? Probably, Aaroon thought that worshiping an idol is totally stupefied and may easily be stopped by a little enlightment they all were waiting for, but if they get divided then it will become very difficult to gather them again. And this reason was enough to make Moses satisfied.

Oneness

Bazoo Tera Tauheed Ki Quwwat Se Qawi Hai

According to the Quran, idolatry or assigning partners to the one GOD (shirk) is an egregious sin. The first thing that Islam speaks about is "Oneness (Tauheed)". But what does that "Oneness" mean? Does it mean worshiping a single God? What if you worship a single GOD but have idols in your heart that you follow in your daily lives? In Iqbal words: "Buton Se Tujh Ko Ummeedein, Khuda Se No-Meedi, Mujhey Bata To Sahih Aur Kafri Kya Hai?"
Oneness is achieved when everyone associates himself/herself to a single authority and spends life according to a single message. This oneness can never be achieved if human are divided in different religions and sects, where each sect has different authorities and different messages.

How We Divided?

Bayan Mein Nuqta-e-Tauheed Aa To Sakta Hai
Tere Dimagh Mein But-Khana Ho To Kya Kahiye?

First Episode

From the first day of human intellect, Allah wanted "Oneness" to be the major pillar of DEEN so all messengers brought the same message. Whenever people deviated from this path and be divided into sects, Allah sent a messenger to bring them again under a single roof. But people started associating themselves to messengers and invented new religions from a single DEEN. For example, Jews accepted Moses and all messengers prior to him but refused to accept Jesus. Who accepted Jesus were called Christians and also accepted all messengers prior to Jesus but refused to accept Mohammad. The reason was the association to the messengers instead of Allah. Allah ended the line of prophets with the advent of Mohammad P.B.U.H. People who accepted Mohammad also accepted all the messengers prior to him.

Qur'an - Chapter 2 - Verse 136:
Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.

Qur'an Chapter 33, Verse 40:
Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; and Allah is ever Aware of all things.

People once again started coming under a single roof and associated themselves to a single GOD. They started practicing what was revealed from Allah. History is witness that Muslims became the most respected nation in the world. But this glory could not be continued longer.

Second Episode

Qur'an - Chapter 3 - Verse 144:
Muhammad is but a messenger, messengers (the like of whom) have passed away before him. Will it be that, when he dieth or is slain, ye will turn back on your heels? He who turneth back on doth no hurt to Allah, and Allah will reward the thankful.

Qur'an - Chapter 3 - Verse 103:
And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren, and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allâh makes His Ayât clear to you, that you may be guided.

Within the first 50 years of Islam, muslims started getting divided into different groups. Initially, the reason was not the differences in practices but gradually different groups started following different personalities and each group considered its leader as the final authority over DEEN. This ummah had the responsibility to spread the good and stop the evil but this objective could only be acheived if muslims were united. Today, people do not call themselves as "muslims" they have many other identities. If you have any doubt then try sometime asking someone.

Qur'an Chapter 6, Verse 159:
Verily, those who divide their DEEN and break up into sects, you (O Muhammad SAW) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allâh, Who then will tell them what they used to do. (159)

Initially there were only 2 sects, then these 2 sects got further divided, and getting divided day by day. Few of them follow an Imam but still do not offer prayers in each others' mosque. You just collect fatwas that they direct against each other, finally you will ask "if everyone is wrong then who is right?" Every sect considers itself "correct" according to the beliefs they have extracted from Qur'an or from narrations. Every sect has its own narrators and narrations and don't consider other narrators or narrations reliable.

Qur'an - Chapter 30 - Verse 32:
Be not of those who split up their DEEN, and became sects, each sect rejoicing in that which is with it.

Qur'an Chapter 3 Verse 105:
And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment. (105)

Iqbal replies the Shikwa in Jawab-e-Shikwa and says:
Manfiyat Aik Hai Is Qaum Ki, Nuqsan Bhi Aik
Aik Hi Sab Ka Nabi, Deen Bhi, Imaan Bhi Aik
Haram-e-Paak Bhi, Allah Bhi, Qur'an Bhi Aik
Kya Bari Baat Thi Hote Jo Musalman Bhi Aik!
Firqa-Bandi Hai Kaheen, Aur Kaheen Zaatein Hain
Kya Zamane Mein Panapne Ki Yehi Baatein Hain?

Youn To Sayyed Bhi Ho, Mirza Bhi Ho, Afghan Bhi Ho
Tum Sabhi Kuch Ho, Batao To Musalman Bhi Ho?

The Solution

1)
Qur'an - Chapter 49 - Verse 9:
And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them both, But if one of them outrages against the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which outrages till it complies with the Command of Allâh; then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allâh loves those who are equitable.

Who has been addressed here to make peace between two parties? It's a party that do not belong to any sect. It was Mohammad P.B.U.H at that time and his true followers. But it had to be continued after Mohammad P.B.U.H so it actually means a Central Authority that follows Quranic System, Quran termed it as "Qibla".

Qaumon Ke Liye Maut Hai Markaz Se Judaayi

2)
The Qur'an is the only way to understand the real essence of Islam and no doubt this book (Qur'an) has no contradictions while other books do have and these contradictions lead to the differences between sects. Muslims nowadays have blind faith on those books that are not from Allah. Qur'an is being used for "sawaab" purposes only, actually misusing it and DEEN is being extracted from books other than Qur'an.

Qur'an - Chapter 4 - Verse 82:
Will they not then ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein many contradictions.

Will you still follow books other than Qur'an?

Final Words

The enemies of Islam, unfortunately they are not outsiders, have played great games in the past but we are still unaware of those conspiracies and taking those unquranic beliefs and teachings as DEEN. Try to think at least what are the reasons of downfall of muslim ummah? Few thousands muslims were strong when they followed Qur'an and the exact DEEN revealed by Allah but now 1.4 billion muslims have no strength. Could this be the same practices that Mohammad P.B.U.H and his companions followed or practices have been changed somehow?

Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar
Allahu Akbar
Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah

This is the fifth installment of a seven part series, examining the challenges, as I see them, and p

This is the fifth installment of a seven part series, examining the challenges, as I see them, and potential solutions, for reforming Islam. I would consider a reform to be meaningful and successful if it resulted in Islam as a personal religion (just a way of relating with God, with no fascist doctrines); if it offered persuasive, comprehensive, and truthful challenges to the version of Islam put forward by the Islamists; and if it became the prevailing view among Muslims.

Challenge: Historical Evidence. To be brief, Islam's 1400 years of history is riddled with conquest and subjugation [1]. I'll focus on the earliest history, because Muslims generally believe Mohammed and those who heard his message in person understood Islam the best. If we accept early Muslim sources, we know that Mohammed and his earliest followers conquered everything they could get their hands on, creating a huge empire within one hundred years of Mohammed's death. If the message of Islam were peaceful, why the rush to conquer the world? To be believed, any reformed Islam would have to be compatible with known history.

What can overcome this challenge?

Frankly, I don't know. Some apologists put out revisionist histories in which Islam spread peacefully because people far and wide instantly recognized the "truth of Islam," but it's hard to put a lot of faith in a deception. In addition, it would dishonor the memory of the conquered peoples to claim they embraced Islam willingly. Ancient peoples lost their lives, religions, and cultures, either quickly or excruciatingly slowly through the pressures of dhimmitude; it would be a further disgrace for them to lose their place in our memory as well. And there's the old adage: those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

So, what do we say? Mohammed and his earliest followers all misunderstood Islam? Both Mohammed and his early followers were not only human, subject to error, but actually barbarians, subject to gross error? This would beg the question: why would any compassionate god choose Mohammed to be his final messenger? I don't know, you tell me.

Ideally, a solution would be consistent with the truth (based on the best information we have available), and provide a foundation for a non-militant, apolitical Islam. That's a tall order.

There is one possibility that I can see, though it may be a long shot. If we regard all the early Muslim sources sceptically, and look instead at the small amount of evidence available from non-Muslim sources, that evidence appears to cast doubt on virtually all of the Muslim version of their early history. This could then be used to challenge the doctrines of Jihad and Islamic supremacy that were formed in early Muslim history.

There is a "lack of evidence, outside the Muslim literature, for the view that the Arabs were Muslim at the time of the Conquest." [2] The earliest mention of the Quran in a non-Muslim source is from the 8th century, not the 7th century when it originated according to Muslim sources [3]. This is a big problem for the traditional Muslim version of events, because Mohammed supposedly mandated that no one was to be conquered until after they were invited to embrace Islam. Even if the conquered peoples did not fully understand Islam, they would have noticed if they'd received a message saying "embrace Islam and you'll be safe", and subsequently they were sacked. This would not be difficult to understand. If this were the case, it is virtually inconceivable that word of this would not get out to areas that had not yet been conquered. The Byzantines, for example, would have been very interested in such information.

According to the Quran, the qibla (direction of worship) was changed from Jerusalem to the sacred Mosque in Mecca during the Messenger's lifetime (2:142-150). However, archeological evidence shows that mosques built after Mohammed's life were pointed toward Jerusalem, suggesting the qibla was moved much later than the Quran indicates [4]. In addition, there's no mention of Mecca in non-Muslim sources of that time period Mohammed allegedly lived there. If Mecca were truly a thriving trading hub as described by Muslim sources, the Greeks or Romans would have mentioned Mecca in their records of trade. Also, Mecca is located in a most inhospitable place, miles away from the natural trade route. Together, this evidence in itself casts doubt on not only the integrity of the Quran as Allah's word, but also on the entire history of the foundation of Islam.

According to Yehuda Nevo and Judith Koren, the Arabs were most likely pagans when they began their conquest. Wansbrough believed the Arabs gradually formed Islam after making contact with Rabbinical Judaism outside of Central Arabia [5]; certain Islamic themes are similar to those of the Samaritans (of central Palestine) [6]. Michael Cook and Patricia Crone have stated it's possible the Quran was thrown together from various sources after the early Arab conquests [7]. Lammens believes the entire biography of Mohammed was created to explain the Quran [8], and Wansbrough believes they went to some lengths to give Islam an Arabic identity, distinct from Judaism [9]. According to Schacht, none of the traditions used to support legal doctrines could be taken as authentic [10].

Some have said they have trouble believing any type of sweeping revision of Islamic history, just because the early Muslims would not have fabricated Mohammed with such a disagreeable character. However, I have another explanation for that. What is disagreeable to us may have been considered admirable by those who wrote the story. To the victors of the Arab conquests, whoever they were, savage ruthlessness could have been a virtue. Having many wives and marrying a child could have been evidence of virility and manliness. They may have seen nothing wrong with torture, raiding caravans, trading in slaves, and raping female captives. It is to us, informed by Judeo-Christian values and the norms of modernity, that this is all quite disgusting. In addition, if the story was written when there was a large empire to keep in line, the rulers could have wanted to justify ruthlessness and savagery for their own purpose: keeping their subjects "subdued" with fear. [Note: All links in this paragraph reference early Muslim sources, or a page which links to early Muslim sources.]

The one exception which I cannot explain in this way is the sorry episode of the Satanic verses, in which Mohammed claimed to have been deceived by Satan (according to early Muslim sources). This episode could have been fabricated to justify the corresponding verses in the Quran (22:52-53, 17:73-75), but how did those verses get in there?

I do not know whether any of the revisionist researchers are correct, but it does seem to be an avenue worth exploring. If even one of these theories is shown to be the best explanation of the evidence, it would provide more than enough basis for Muslim reformers to challenge the authenticity of the ideologies of Jihad and Sharia. The challenge then would be to preserve a viable religion that is harmless yet bears some resemblance to Islam. Middle East expert Daniel Pipes believes Islam can survive these types of scholarly challenges, just as Christianity and Judiasm did, and maybe he's right.

Salaam and Greetings of Peace:

The following is the translation of a famous invocation of blessings upon the Prophet entitled Darud Taj or "Invocation of the Crown" which is especially well known in the Indian subcontinent.

O Allah, send blessings and Peace upon our Master and Patron Muhammad
The Owner of the Crown and the Ascent and the Buraq and the Standard,
The Repeller of Affliction and Disease and Drought and Illness and Pain.
His name is written on high, served and engraved in the Tablet and the Pen,
The Leader of All, Arabs and non-Arabs,
Whose body is sanctified, fragrant, and pure,
The Sun of Brightness, the Full Moon in Darkness, The Cave of Refuge for Mortals, the Lamp That Dispels the Night
The Foremost One in the Highest Fields, the Light of Guidance,
The Best-Natured One, The Intercessor of Nations, The Owner of Munificence and Generosity
Allah is his Protector, Gabriel is his servant. The Buraq is his mount ,
The Ascent is his voyage. The Lote-Tree of the Furthermost Boundary is his station,
Two Bow-Lengths or Nearer is his desire,
His desire is his goal, and he has found his goal,
The Master of the Messengers, the Seal of the Prophets,
The intercessor of sinners, the friend of the strangers,
The Mercy for the Worlds,
The rest of those who burn with love, the goal of those who yearn,
The sun of knowers, the lamp of travellers, The light of Those Brought Near,
The friend of the poor and destitute,
The master of Humans and Jinn,
The Prophet of the Two Sanctuaries,
The Imam of the Two Qiblas,
Our Means in the Two Abodes,
The Owner of Qaba Qawsayn,
The Beloved of the Lord of the Two Easts and the Two Wests,
The grandfather of al-Hasan and al-Husayn,
Our patron and the patron of Humans and Jinn:
Abu al-Qasim MUHAMMAD Son of `Abd Allah,
A light from the light of Allah.
O you who yearn for the light of his beauty,
Send blessings and utmost greetings of peace
Upon him and upon his Family.

December 17th marked the beginning of the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, and is expected at least once in the lifetime of every Muslim who can afford to undertake the journey. (This year an estimated 2 million people will take part in the hajj.)

One of the rituals of the hajj involves walking seven times counterclockwise around the Kaaba, a cubical stone building draped in black cloth, regarded by Muslims as the holiest place on Earth.

Islam calls for the faithful to pray at five specified times each day; prayers are said while facing the Kaaba in Mecca. The appropriate direction for prayer is known as the qibla; Islamic interest in spherical trigonometry throughout the medieval era was driven in part by the desire to refine methods of determining the qibla for any given location.

David King's World-maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca has an extensive discussion of the history of the problem, including mathematical methods introduced in its approximate and exact solution over the millenia.

According to the wikipedia entry on the qibla, within the North American Islamic communities, there is some controversy over how the qibla should be determined: some hold that the traditional great-circle route is the appropriate direction; others argue for a straight-line path on a Mercator projection as the correct qibla. As an issue of doctrine, apparently this is an issue of ongoing controversy.

The Qibla Locator can determine the distance and direction from any location on the Earth to Mecca. (It gives the traditional great-circle route.)
