I could really write a book on my friend Mark.

I could tell and share all the ups and downs but more than anything, I want to share a video I made about him and how we communicate.

Mark has ALS and while it may have affected many parts of his life, it has not affected his ability to think, to be receptive to touch, to care - he is all there.

I love Mark, dearly and thanks to the magic of the Internet, you tube, the Erica Eye Gaze System and Dyna Vox, Mark can still communicate though he can't speak or move his arms or legs.

Most of what I want to say is recorded in two you tube videos - only one has been posted so far due to a PC issue but I will get part two up soon.

For now, in my own voice, here is the video I made about ALS. I made it outside as Mark loves the outdoors - I just didn't get the lighting right or prepare for mosquitoes. And the editing is, well, non-existent, I just kept talking and got this thing posted as soon as I could.

I just want everyone to know that ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease" isn't an end to life - Mark is living it the best he can and I am grateful to google and google filters for providing a free service that I can personalize to make communicating with Mark easier.

And here is the first, very raw part........

Once upon a time there was a little pale-faced curly-haired boy and all he did was play the piano.

Once upon a time there was a little pale-faced curly-haired boy and all he did was play the piano. All he ever wanted to do was play the piano. Seeing the smiling chubby face of his piano teacher once a week was all he ever cared about. He practiced so hard. Then he started "growing up." The little pale-faced curly-haired boy realized that despite his best efforts and more and more hours in front of that piano, he didn't play anywhere near as well as he had hoped he would. His delicate little hands were no longer subjects of wonder and they even started sprouting hair. What could be worse? Mounds and mounds of unfinished half-learned pieces by the likes of Beethoven, Schubert, and even Ravel piled up next to that piano that his parents had scrimped and saved to purchase as he continued attending lessons that became more and more expensive. So he practiced more and his self-esteem diminished more with each passing day.

And then the pain started.

Stabbing pains ravaged his left arm as he practiced that damn Etude day after day. Then they subsided until just a dull ache remained while he was not playing. The doctor laughed. You got this from playing the piano???

And this boy grew to hate the piano and all it symbolized. Hours wasted filled with unnecessary toil because his playing never impressed anyone important and became commonplace for all who knew him. His family bragged, but deep down he knew he was a fraud. He'd never make his New York debut playing the Prokofiev 3rd like he had dreamed... no... he would make no debut at all.

Years passed. He gave away his piano and boxed up his scores. He earned degrees in liberal arts and taught a foreign language, but his sleep was plagued with dreams. Dreams of music and piano and former teachers who finally gave their approval. And he realized... He really liked playing the piano. Of course, now he didn't have one. All those years, he never played unless he had something to prepare for -- a recital, a college audition, a jury. But somehow, alone at the piano, he managed to find peace with himself. Never doubted his purpose -- to play. And now, feeling much too old to start over, he may possibly do just that.

Because in all the things that change, friendships that grow and some that die, money that comes and vanishes, one thing will always be a constant in his life. When he sits in front of those eighty-eight keys and maybe only then, he is safe and he knows exactly what to do.

The Art of Youra Guller，

Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born on 1 July, 1899 in Villa Rica, Georgia, USA and died on 23 January, 19

Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born on 1 July, 1899 in Villa Rica, Georgia, USA and died on 23 January, 1993 in Chicago, Illinois. Thomas is known as "the father of gospel music". Earlier in his life he was a leading blues pianist known as Georgia Tom.

As formulated by Thomas Dorsey, gospel music combines Christian praise with the rhythms of jazz and the blues. Thomas' conception also deviates from what had been, to that time, standard hymnal practice by referring explicitly to the self, and the self's relation to faith and God, rather than the individual subsumed into the group via belief.

Thomas Dorsey was the music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago from 1932 until the late 1970s. Thomas' best known composition, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", was performed by Mahalia Jackson and was a favorite of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, and "Peace in the Valley", which was a hit for Red Foley in 1951 and has been performed by dozens of other artists, including Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.

In 2002, the Library of Congress honored his album Precious Lord: New Recordings of the Great Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey (1973), by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry.

Thomas Dorsey's father was a minister and his mother a piano teacher. Thomas Dorsey learned to play blues piano as a young man. After studying music formally in Chicago, he became an agent for Paramount Records. Thomas Dorsey put together a band for Ma Rainey called the "Wild Cats Jazz Band" in 1924.

Thomas Dorsey started out playing at rent parties with the names Barrelhouse Tom and Texas Tommy, but he was most famous as Georgia Tom. As Georgia Tom, he teamed up with Tampa Red (Hudson Whittaker) with whom he recorded the raunchy 1928 hit record "Tight Like That", a sensation, selling seven million copies. In all, he is credited with more than 400 blues and jazz songs.

Personal tragedy led Thomas Dorsey to leave secular music behind and began writing and recording what he called "gospel" music. Thomas Dorsey was the first to use that term. Thomas Dorsey's first wife, Nettie, who had been Rainey's wardrobe mistress, died in childbirth in 1932 along with his first son. In his grief, he wrote his most famous song, one of the most famous of all gospel songs, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord".

Unhappy with the treatment received at the hands of established publishers, Thomas Dorsey opened the first black gospel music publishing company, Thomas Dorsey House of Music. Thomas Dorsey also founded his own gospel choir and was a founder and first president of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses.

Thomas Dorsey's influence was not limited to African American music, as white musicians also followed his lead. "Precious Lord" has been recorded by Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Clara Ward, Roy Rogers, and Tennessee Ernie Ford, among hundreds of others. It was a favorite gospel song of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was sung at the rally the night before his assassination, and at his funeral by Mahalia Jackson, per his request. It was also a favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who requested it to be sung at his funeral. Thomas Dorsey was also a great influence on other Chicago based gospel artists such as "Queen of Gospel" Albertina Walker and The Caravans.

Thomas Dorsey wrote "Peace in the Valley" for Mahalia Jackson in 1937, which also became a gospel standard. Thomas Dorsey was the first African American elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and also the first in the Gospel Music Association's Living Hall of Fame. Thomas Dorsey was inducted into the Gennett Records Walk of Fame in 2007. Thomas Dorsey papers are preserved at Fisk University, along with those of W.C. Handy, George Gershwin, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.

The works of Thomas A. Dorsey have proliferated beyond performance, into the hymnals of virtually all American churches and of English-speaking churches worldwide.

Thomas Dorsey was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

In 2007, he was inducted as a charter member of the Gennett Records Walk of Fame in Richmond, Indiana.

Joseph E. Fields, a pianist, conductor and composer who was a former music director and principal conductor of Dance Theater of Harlem, died on July 4 in Scranton, Pa. He was 53 and had homes in Scranton and New York City.

John Fetsock, a family spokesman, said he died after a short illness.

After working with Dance Theater of Harlem from 1998 to 2004, Mr. Fields became the orchestra director and administrator of the music school at Marywood University in Scranton in 2005. He was also an associate professor there.

One of his major contributions at Dance Theater came during the company's 2003 Lincoln Center Festival premiere of "St. Louis Woman," a ballet based on the 1946 Broadway musical of that name. Mr. Fields provided orchestration and arrangements of the Broadway score by Harold Arlen and other songs, while also writing some original music. Choreographed by Michel Smuin, the ballet did not remain in the repertory but received praise for its entertainment value. From the start, the overture conducted by Mr. Fields had many viewers rocking in their seats.

Mr. Fields also conducted orchestras for the company's tours in the United States, Europe, China and Australia.

Joseph E. Fields was born on Jan. 3, 1955, in Miami, Okla., and graduated summa cum laude from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he also received a master's degree before earning a doctorate at Manhattan School of Music.

He was executive director of the Brooklyn Music School from 1997 to 1998 and also performed as a piano soloist and with chamber groups. Bernard Holland, reviewing a piano program by Mr. Fields in The New York Times in 1988, wrote, "How satisfying it was to hear music-making in which every line, voice and texture had been thought through and cared about."

At Marywood, Mr. Fields wrote several works, including song cycles based on poems by E. E. Cummings.

I'm taking a busman's holiday over lunch to write a quick round-up of some of the apps I've installed so far on my new iPhone 3g. Hope it's helpful for other users bewildered by the array on offer. They're in no particular order.

iFob

Groundbreaking ambient networking app that allows you to broadcast a mini-profile and connect/text-chat with other users physically close to you (it bleeps you). At the moment only works within a WiFi hotspot - so useful for meeting like-minded folks at conferences, clubs, coffee shops, pubs, etc. Also currently needs no central server to work, which is neat. But it'd be even better if it worked on the basis of your location whether you were using 3g or WiFi and bleeped you when you were within a specified distance of another user. Nonetheless, a pioneering app - we'll doubtless see more stuff like this in future. [Update: Well, at least we will if Apple deigns to allow background running of apps on the iPhone with a future firmware update. This app does have a 'run in the background' option, but I presume this only works within WiFi hotspots, if at all (not had a chance to test it yet). To work to full potential, iFob would need to run in the background all the time - over WifI, 3g or Edge networks. So currently it looks like other, less restrictive smartphones will prove a more fertile breeding ground for apps of this ilk.]

[Developer: iCloseBy.com, FREE]

Shazam

Amazing little app that listens to a song in the background wherever you are for about 12 seconds and then identifies it for you. I tested it on some really obscure tracks and it only failed once (with Philip Jeck, an experimental noise artist). A real 'wow factor' about this one. Only works with recorded tracks, though, so it wouldn't ID songs at a gig. Doesn't work if you sing into it, either, in case you were wondering...

[Developer: Shazam Entertainment, FREE]

Vicinity

Checks your location and lets you see wikipedia articles relating to the area you're in, as well as details of nearby banks, bars, pubs, cafes, convenience stores, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, takeouts and taxi firms. Nice interface and works pretty well, but it obviously bases the info on nearest town/village "as the crow flies" rather than necessarily the one you're in. It told me I was in nearby Leytonstone instead of on the edge of Walthamstow and made its recommendations on that basis, meaning none of my local services, cafes or pubs appeared (although it did include wikipedia articles on my area). It also needs to include petrol stations. Nonetheless, should prove very useful when out and about, particularly in major cities.

[Developer: ActiveGuru, UK price £1.79]

Byline

Grabs feeds and full stories from your Google Reader account for online or offline browsing. Useful as a stop-gap until Google brings out an official Reader app or webapp, but for a paid app it should really give you more customisation/user-related options - e.g. browsing your individual feeds and letting you share/star items etc. There are other free RSS readers available if you're not wedded to Google Reader, which would probably be a better bet in that case.

[Developer: Milo Bird, UK price £5.99]

Last.fm

A killer app for me. Great functionality. Free. Listen to your own or any last.fm stations over WiFi or 3g. Features track scrobbling, groups, etc. too. Top marks. Now, if only Apple would allow the iPhone to run apps in the background while you do other tasks...

{Developer: Last.fm, FREE]

Tap Tap Revenge

Great little (free) beat-matching game where you have to tap or shake the iPhone in specific ways in time to various tracks.

[Developer: Gogo Apps, FREE]

Pianist

Full 88-key piano on your iPhone with sustain and soft pedals and song-recording features. Uses multi-touch, so you can play chords. Difficult to scroll the keyboard while playing though, since the app only shows one octave on the screen. It's also a little annoying that you can't trigger two adjacent keys simultaneously by hitting the gap between them, as you could on a real piano - you have to press each with a separate finger. Otherwise very good.

[Developer: MooCowMusic, UK price £3.49]

Band

By the same developer as Pianist, Band features a rock drumkit, bass guitar and more basic piano than Pianist. Also has a 'Blues Bar' with pre-programmed blues riffs, a second drumkit with pre-programmed funky rhythms and an 'audience applause' sound effect. You can record individual parts and merge them into a saved composition. Superb.

[Developer: MooCowMusic, UK price £5.99]

Enigmo

Fantastic puzzle game of the Lemmings variety, except you have to guide a stream of water droplets into a container. This is the game I'll be playing the most. Addictive, great graphics, quirky physics, gets the grey matter working and easy to get the hang of. Some of the reviews posted in the Appstore bemoan the lack of instructions. They seem to forget the title of the game is 'Enigmo' - figuring out what the various tools do is all part of the challenge.

[Developer: Pangea Software, UK price £5.99]

G-Park

Handy little location-based utility that remembers where you've parked your car (or just where you are when you press the button) and guides you back to it when you want.

[Developer: PosiMotion, UK price 59p]

BBC iPlayer (web app)

Works fine when you find something to play, but it only plays the shows that are available as streaming video on the Beeb website (a handful of the total programming on iPlayer). The interface, however, is abysmal and there's no easy way to see a list of those programs that are available on iPhone. Only when you find and click on the programme you want will you know if you can watch it (because a little play button appears in the middle of the window if it's available). Needs some serious work on the interface, this.

[UPDATE: I was wrong. Had a bit more of a play with this and if you click on the 'find programmes' button in the BBC iPlayer box it does indeed only list programmes available to view on iPlayer - it can just take a while for the play button to appear on the thumbnail. There seems to be more here than I originally thought, too - still only a fraction of the complete content, but more than is available in streaming format on the website I think. However, the interface still sucks - the prominent Google ads are very obtrusive, especially. But, heck, I know the Beeb needs all the cash it can get, and as long they keep pumping out great content I won't moan any more about this.]

[Developer: BBC, FREE web app]

Right - lunch break over, so that's all for now. I'll try to augment this list later in the week, when I've had a bit more of a play around. Now, back to the grind...

You’re either a classical musician or a jazzman, a chanson singer or a pop singer or an opera conductor or... there are always certain boxes, certain pigeonholes, and crossing the boundaries between them is still considered an absolute taboo, not only musically but socially.

Gulda was one of the few artists to cross these boundaries. He should be considered a model for 21th century musicians. His life was a merciless fight against musical snobbery. It is a shame, considering the beauty and profundity of classical music, that it is performed mostly by dull, narrow-minded people for conservatives who don't get the music at all but attend the concerts merely for reasons of social reputation or out of pure intellectual nosiness. Thus, the reminder of classical music gets dragged through the mire and if nobody actually stands up and puts something against it - like Gulda - maybe in some years nobody will listen to Bach and Beethoven anymore.

Having the chance to take private lessons is really something one can’t pass up. As one would

Having the chance to take private lessons is really something one can't pass up. As one would guess, I could use them in my quest to get back into school for music, and so it wouldn't really surprise much anyone to discover I am taking them again. I am lucky to have a wonderful teacher that is in the area. Anyhow with this new direction, what I'm working on has changed a bit. So here I go, I'll yammer a bit about one of the things I'm working on... I think I'll try to slowly introduce each thing and maybe talk more about them as I progress.

Time Pieces, Op. 43 by Robert Muczynski for clarinet and piano is probably the piece that looks most challenging right now for me. The work was written for Mitchell Lurie (the owner of Mitchell Lurie reeds and mouthpieces as well as clarinet instructor at USC), who is a good friend of Muczynski. It was premiered at the Clarinet Congress of the International Clarinet Society in London in 1984, which is a huge convention for clarinetists (I believe it is now called ClarinetFest® instead of congress and the society changed it's name to the International Clarinet Association).

In case you're like me and didn't know much about the composer: Robert Muczynski is an American composer and pianist. He received both a bachelors and Masters degree from DePaul University in piano performance (studying with Walter Knupfer and Alexander Tcherepnin). Pretty major performer really, he played at Carnegie Hall when he was 29, performing all his own compositions. His works have become increasingly popular in the U.S. and abroad (I know the Chicago Symphony has played some of his stuff). He's also been an instructor at DePaul and other universities throughout the country.

So far I find the piece extremely difficult. I am practicing at less than half tempo and have only made it through part of the first movement. It is definitely a twentieth century piece and contains a lot of jazz elements. I find it to be very fun to play, so far my impression is to create a very clean open sound that is flowing and very forward driving. I have yet to get any recording of the piece, so I am basing most of this on how it sounds when I play it, and not how the big hotshots are doing it (oh and there are some major hotshots who have preformed this, including of course Mitchell Lurie).

I lived in Toronto for over 10 years. In between those years, I had been in and out Waterloo for about 5 years. Toronto is a fast pace and commercialized city. On the other hand, Waterloo is a quiet and relaxing place. Ottawa is like a mix of the best between Toronto and Waterloo. In fact, Rideau Cancal makes all the differences. The landscape in Ottawa gives me a relaxing feeling of a fast pace city! Its uniqueness is absolutely gorgeous.

Part of the reason I went to Ottawa, of course, for the 10k run on Saturday. I also went there to visit a good friend who is studying Psychology in University of Ottawa. A buddy of mine, a friend of his and myself drove to Ottawa on Friday evening. The 10k run happened on Saturday. We went back to Toronto on Sunday evening. We visited Canadian Museum of Civilization and National Gallery of Canada. In the Canadian Museum of Civilization, there was a Glenn Gould exhibition. As you may know, Gould was a Canadian pianist, noted especially for his recordings of the music J.S. Bach. He was one of the best-known and most celebrated pianists of the 20th century. I also a big fan of Gould's work. Not to mention I also have many of Gould'd CDs :).

The MDS Nordion 10k run was on Saturday (May 24th) evening started at 6:30pm. It was my 2nd 10k run. Overall the run was great! This run was harder than the previous one (Sporting Life 10k) in my opinion. First, Sporting Life 10k was mostly downhill, while this one is flat race. Second, the temperature was ~25'C in Ottawa and it was sunny all weekend. The Sporting Life 10K was earlier while the temperature was still cool. Because of those, I was exhausted half way through the run. The worst of all, I was having side stitches half way through so I had to slow down. Afterward I talked to my coach, he told me a method to cure side stitches.

Regardless, the feeling of passing the finish line was the greatest!

I was absolutely heartbroken to learn, today, that acclaimed Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson

I was absolutely heartbroken to learn, today, that acclaimed Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson passed away last weekend at the young age of 44.

I was first introduced to the music of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, also known as EST, in the late 1990s while I was living in Sweden. The album was EST Plays Monk and it completely altered my perception of what a jazz trio could sound like; I was a fan from the first note.

Since then, I've followed Svensson's music closely, bought and loved all of his albums, and I even had the opportunity to meet EST when I booked them to perform on ZeD for CBC Television.

The beauty of EST's music lies in its ability to seamlessly weave elements of rock, jazz, avant-garde, and classical into an ever-evolving melodic and rhythmic flow that is utterly captivating and otherwordly. If you have never listened to Svensson's music before, I strongly encourage you to do so. For me, "Behind the Yashmak" remains one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.

Esbjörn Svensson was an incomparable talent; he was one of the most original and dynamic piano players I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, and I am deeply saddened by his sudden death. I will cherish the legacy of his music and mourn the loss of his incredible potential. My condolences go out to all who knew and loved him. Rest in peace.

Esbjörn Svensson, who died on Saturday aged 44 in a scuba-diving accident near Stockholm, was a pianist and leader of the innovative Esbjörn Svensson Trio, popularly known as EST.

The trio, founded in the early 1990s, played an unclassifiable brand of music which incorporated avant-garde jazz, contemporary rock and elements of modern classical music in constantly varying proportions.

Its live performances, in particular, were exciting, unpredictable and hugely popular with young audiences. The trio's fame was still growing strongly at the time of Svensson's death.

Esbjörn Svensson was born on April 16 1964 at Västeras, Sweden. His mother was a classical pianist and his father a keen jazz enthusiast, and the boy grew up with an equal love for both genres, as well as for rock.

He took up the piano "because we didn't have any other instrument in the house", although he would have preferred the drums. Quite soon he met another schoolboy, Magnus Oström, who did have some drums and they began playing together: "We had no idea how to play, but it was a lot of fun ... No one was telling us how to play." Oström was to become the drummer with EST.

At 16 Svensson gained a place at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, going on later to study Music at Stockholm University. During this time he played in a number of small jazz combos in Sweden and Denmark before finding work in the recording studios.

Ahh, now that I can't tell you. It's a trade secret...just kidding.

No really, if you want to know the best way to learn is to go to chiropractic school. We have somewhere around 350 hours of class on this topic. (Divide that up into 2 hour segments 3-5 times a week.) So, you can see that it's probably not a good idea to let your medical doctor adjust your spine (or any other untrained person), even though that's in their scope of practice. (I'm not sure why that is.) It takes a lot of practice. It's kind of like a concert pianist. They make it look easy, and to them it may be. It's only because they have practiced for years and years so that they don't even have to think about it anymore.

Now general adjustments can be done by yourself, or someone giving you a big hug. That is motion in your joints, and they just happen to pop, that's great. A chiropractic adjustment should be more specific. I hope I can summarize this. Your doctor will try to isolate the pain generating joint, and determine the vector of thrust required to take that joint through the corrective motion. Then, through body positioning, he will attempt to lock out all the joints around it so that they aren't moving when he applies force. At that time he will deliver a high velocity low amplitude thrust with the appropriate contact in the appropriate location and in the appropriate vector to enable the correction. Adjustments can be rotational, gapping, flexing, etc., or any combination. Basically what ever way your joint can move it has the possibility to be adjusted in that range of motion.

I hope you followed that. After all it was your question. I hope I explained it well enough. Please comment if you have more to add, or still have questions. If you want to experience an adjustment feel free to set up an appointment.
