It takes a sub conscious mind to reach the point of thoughts where you are yourself, where you are Just Yourself and nothing else, and there is nobody around. No sounds you can hear, no smells you can smell, nothing. It is just you and the vastness of the cosmos.

It takes nothing but music to move you, nothing but innocence to touch you.

We (me and Unitechy ) were on a Photowalk... and planned to cross the southern end from Gateway of India, to Nariman Point. Things somehow went the other way when we discovered a few kids, getting themselves dirty, learning stuff and enjoying themselves...

We decided to "look into the matter"...

Let me post up some slideshow of some photos I have taken thus far. Some are really overdue. Let me start with this one, a photowalk at Chow Kit street with Jayna who was back from the UK for a short break in May. We has a walk at the Chow Kit wet market and some surrounding streets. Armed only with a standard lens, 50mm f/1.4 AIS, on my trusty Nikon FM2n, with a roll of black and white film, Ilford HP Plus 400, these were the shots I had captured on that Saturday afternoon.

Georgetown Photowalk 12, originally uploaded by hennessey|g.

I had an opportunity to participate in a Georgetown Photowalk put together by jrevell from the PhotoWalkPro blog. It was a nice afternoon to take a walk which kind of made up for the fact that I found myself a little disinterested in the subject matter. I had been to Georgetown quite often and so it wasn't really new to me. I took a photo of the sign for the Alamo and after that the walk became a personal assignment to photograph street signs. I hope you enjoy the photos. Some of them turned out better than I expected.

I couldn't get rid of the lens flare on this photo but I liked how it turned out as it was.

This was a strange spot for this sign. There didn't seem to be a place to park near the sign which is why it attracted my attention.

I saw an opportunity to play with my 50 mm depth of field. When I was snapping the photos several of the other photograpers looked over the rail to see what I was shooting but it was really nothing. I just liked the abstract nature of the photograph.

At the start of the photowalk I thought about trying to photograph repetitive sights during the walk. This photo is what lead me there. I changed my mind during the photowalk but it was still an interesting capture.

I liked the juxtapostion of wood and metal in this photo.

I had to choose between normal exposure and blowing out the sky to lighten the stairwell. I liked the transition from dark to light with the nature mixed in with the stone.

This is the sign that lead me to start looking more closely at street signs in Georgetown. I like the metal with a touch of neon in the background.

In the past few days, Bill was able to scan and edit some of his photographs from last week's PhotoWalk in Georgetown. He used two different cameras during the walk - one was his DSLR - the other a Graflex SLR camera that uses 120 film.

These first four photos of Bill's are ones he took using the Graflex. If you'd like to see what Bill's Graflex camera looks like, Jeff Revell posted a great photo of Bill using the camera on Flickr.

Several photographers from the Georgetown PhotoWalk have posted their photos to the PhotoWalkPro Georgetown PhotoWalk Group on Flickr.
Yesterday morning, Danialle and I met-up with a couple of Chicago Flickr photogs to shoot some models Strobist-style near the meat packing district, in the West Loop.

Out of the three models that were confirmed for the day, zero showed up. Two called that morning to cancel (one had a zit on her nose. haha!) and the third was M.I.A.

Since it was a gorgeous day we just walked around the area and photographed our surroundings for a couple of hours. I haven't really spent much time in the West Loop since moving to Chicago, so it was cool to see a different side of the city. Besides being the home of the meat packing district, the West Loop appears to attract the artistic. We walked by many commercial buildings containing artist's studios and galleries.

There were LOTS of great backgrounds for models - too bad we didn't have any. Ha ha! We had a great time regardless. Maybe next time.

Yesterday, Bill and I went on the PhotoWalk in Georgetown organized by Jeff Revell - and we had a wonderful time. It was our first Photowalk - but definitely not our last. Thanks Jeff for organizing the PhotoWalk.

The group of about 50 photographers met in Georgetown and walked the route that Jeff had laid out. We walked along the C&O canal, up to M Street, through an alley, stopped for lunch at Philadelphia Cheesesteak, ate lunch at Francis Scott Key Park, and ended up back where we started for a group photo (and the obligatory you can't photograph here comments from local security). Along the way - everyone photographed whatever caught their eye - and spent lots of time getting to know each other. And of course - talking about camera gear, printers, software, photo locations . . .

One of the most amusing aspects of the day was watching other people's reactions to the large group of photographers walking along taking photos. Most of us were using DSLRs with good-sized lenses. People weren't sure if we were a photography class, a group of paparazzi photographing a celebrity or what.

Here a few of my photos from the Georgetown PhotoWalk.

This pair of guys were enjoying a quiet cup of coffee along the canal. I loved the look on the face of the guy in the sunglasses as he realized that a group of photographers were taking pictures of him.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

As we walked along the C&O canal, we could see evidence in the brickwork how buildings have been repurposed over the years. At one time - there were arches on the side of the building - perhaps tunnel openings to allow easy access to the canal. Now the building house offices and apartments.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

I loved the name and the look of the sign for this hair salon near Lock 4 on the C&O Canal. The salon is called Fourth Lock.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

Where else in DC beside Georgetown will you see a pink bicycle with purple flowers chained to a parking meter? It added a wonderful splash of color to the street.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

This rabbit mask was one of several masks in tobacco shop window on M Street.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

These flowers are part of a mural on the side of one of restaurants in Georgetown.

(c) 2008 Patty Hankins

I'll be posting these and a few additional photographs in the Flickr PhotoWalkPro Georgetown Photowalk Group. Be sure to check out the group to see what all the others photographers captured on the walk. We'll add some of Bill's photos to the Flickr group next weekend. We still need to get his film developed . . .

If you ever have a chance to go on a Photowalk in your area - we'd really recommend going. You'll get a chance to meet some other photographers, do some photography, and figure out what the next new gadget you've just got to have is.

Went for another impromptu shoot on Saturday with Ben around the National Mosque and Dataran Merdeka. I'm slowly getting the hang of using manual mode to shoot. It feels great to be able to have full control on the exposure you want for any shots, however that being said I don't think it'll ever be an exclusive thing as I still find the other settings in the camera to be extremely useful in various conditions.

One of the concerns I have with my camera is that somehow this particular model, the Canon 400D are known to produce pictures that are slightly underexposed, about 2/3 of a stop under. Albeit the fact that the Tamron 17-50mm is slightly brighter, I still find myself having to increase the exposure of most of my photos during post processing. In fact nowadays, most my photos are taken with a +1/3 EV just to be on the safe side. I still need to do a few more test on this, especially with an external flash unit just to find out whether my camera will underexpose. I'll probably post my findings once I'm done with the test.

Anyway, back to my impromptu outing photos. I will be posting up a few more shots on my Flickr stream in the next few days when I'm done processing them. Out about 200+ shots, I only have about 20 shots which are "keepers". There are a few which I could spice up by doing some funky processing to make the photo stands out but for now, I prefer to keep the photo processing to the minimal and concentrate more on taking good shots instead.

Hopefully I'll be more consistent with my shots in the next outing.

Lesson no. 1 in photography: Always bring your camera! Your chances of shooting an actual photo increases greatly!

Last Friday night on my way to the cinema. I walk along the lakes in Copenhagen listening to music on my ipod all the time staring a hole in the sky. Suddenly the elements come together and brings me to a sudden stop. The special warm contre-jour light of the setting sun, the reflection in the perfectly still water of Lake Peblinge (very rarely is the water that still) and the clouds which are sort of mirrored by patterns made by weed in the lake. I attach an ND grad filter and wait for the sun to fall behind a cloud so it doesn't overpower the scene and burn out the sky and I shoot about a dozen shots. I chose this (click to see large):

Sortedam Dossering and Lake Peblinge Sunset Panorama
Copyright Flemming Bo Jensen Photography

A bit of Rawshooter and Photoshop post production (some painting with light, some LAB colour treatment and some vignetting) completed the photo. I didn't want to brighten the buildings too much, just a subtle effect, it still has to look like an against the light shot.

I love it when I finally get a shot I've had planned in my head for months or perhaps years. But there's also something really cool and creative about a spontaneous walkabout shot! Just remember that camera. Does make it easier!

Yesterday, I managed to join my friends for my first ever photowalk, or rather I should say it was our first ever photowalk. Two new Alpha enthusiasts and a Canon user, all photowalking for the first time.

Beginning the walk was somewhat awkward for us, not knowing what to expect and also feeling a little weird to be taking pictures of a place we've visited many times. It's like suddenly we became a tourist of the city we grew up in, trying to see it in a different light and learning to describe what the place is all about in picture form.

Standing at the famous Bukit Bintang traffic light junction, each of us began pulling out our cameras and started shooting. Though this was a completely new experience for all of us, we just went along with our gut feelings and started framing out shots, hoping that at the end of it we will have a few pictures worthy of some bragging rights among our fellow newbie photographers. Before long we found our own rhythm and started working our shots, improvising along the way and planning our route in a spontaneous manner.

To be truthful, I struggled quite a bit with my shots during the photowalk. One of the reason was because I find it hard to isolate a good subject in a busy environment. I guess this is what they call in photography term as the ability to "see".

Another reason was that I was testing out my new lens and at the same time, learning how to shoot in full manual mode. Yep, I was overwhelming myself with too many new things at one go. *smacks own head*

Anyway, as we were walking towards KLCC, we found a place behind Pavilion KL which was really good for portraits hence I asked Ben to model for us and we took a few sample shots.

The photowalk took about 3 hours, beginning right in the middle of the afternoon at around 1:30pm and ended at approximately 4:30pm right before it started to rain. We were fortunate because the weather was great yesterday as it was cloudy and somewhat windy throughout the day. Of course in the middle of it, we took a short root beer break at A&W and did some windows shopping at KLCC too. Hehe ...

All in all, it was a great experience and I managed to pick up a few valuable photography gems from the photowalk. More photos of the walk can be seen here.

After a wedding on Sunday, I headed out to take some photographs of some local covered bridges near Frederick. Fortunately for me the rain stopped just as I was leaving the reception. It has rained a lot here in the greater DC area. I had been meaning to come out here and use this subject. But Frederick is not exactly next door to Alexandria, VA. I've played a few rounds of golf out here, but I never seem to be in the mood to take photographs after 4 to 5 hours of golf.

I needed to get out of work and decided that since I had my camera with me ( he he), I would take a trip out to Brookside Gardens. I had heard about the place but had never been since it is essentially on the opposited side of the City from where I live. It is not far from where I work so I hopped into the VUE and drove over. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. The gardens were in great shape (lots of rain this spring) and there weren't many people around. I did see another photographer clicking away with her Canon 5D but I decided to walk on my own today. I gave the grounds a good walk through and here are some of the images I came up with. If you are in the area and would like a nice quiet place to relax and take in the nature, the views are nice and there are quite a few benches.

Have a great Day!
