Wow - is it just me, or have I not done a blog in a very long time?? It's just me ;) ANYWAYS. That's beside the point. It's been about 2 months since I've been back in Oregon. I've been going to school and working - a lot. School is surprisingly going very well. I'm maintaining a B average. That's something I've never been able to do throughout my whole school career. Work isn't going to great though. It's not that I'm bored with it; it's more like, I'm tired with it. I'm planning on quitting within the next 2 weeks. But other than that mess, it's going alright. I've taken a few pictures that are below. These are mostly for the people back in Vegas who have been bugging me to take pictures of Oregon. Haha. So, I hope you enjoy the pictures. My next blog will hopefully be more detailed and more in depth.

Departing from the theme here a little bit because this is not really Anatolia. It's not actually Turkey either - this picture was taken on the Greek island of Castellorizo, just off the Turkish coast, which the Turks call Meis. The town and especially the harbor are beautiful - this view looks down the harbor street on the left side. Still, when we visited in early May it was a ghost town and before noon not a single cafe was open. All to be found on the streets was a few fisherman and some lonely blue Greek architecture.

I found this excellent post below from BobAtkins.com about using manual focus lenses on Canon EOS bodies via this great article at Photojojo: Better Lenses for Less Money: How To Use Vintage Lenses with Your DSLR

Using Manual Focus Lenses on Canon EOS bodies

A common question is whether older manual focus lenses from other manufacturers can be used with a Canon EOS body. The answer is a qualified "yes" in many cases. Of course you don't get autofocus, nor do you get any sort of focus confirmation. Also, you don't get any sort of automatic iris operation. In most SLRs, focusing is done at full aperture, and if you stop the lens down to, say, f11, it remains fully open until just before exposure, then it stops down for the exposure and opens up again. This gives a brighter viewfinder image and makes focusing easier and more accurate. When these lenses are mounted on an EOS body, stop down metering must be used. That means that the lens is first focused at full aperture (for maximum accuracy), then manually stopped down to the shooting aperture before the shot is taken. Some people have trouble accurately focusing using the standard EOS viewfinder screen, since it has no focus aids (like a split image center). While some of the higher end models (like the EOS-1 series, the EOS 3 and the EOS A2), so have additional accessory screens with focus aids (e.g. screen Ec-B has a split image center), the consumer level cameras (Rebel, Elan, digital Rebel, 10D, 20D) do not.

Clearly using a manual focus lens is inconvenient, but sometimes it can be worth it if the equivalent EOS lens is expensive, if the manual focus lens is better than any Canon EF or EF-S series lens (rare, but it happens), if you shoot mostly static subjects or if you don't use the lens very often.

Last week, I posted about Yann-Arthus Bertrand who took some amazing photos of earth from above. This week I've been shown more photos in the same style by Jason Hawkes. Take a look at the post on Boston.com for 19 incredible photos (makes me feel a little nostalgic). Thanks to Babis for letting me know.

With the end of the Olympics in Beijing, all eyes turned for a moment to London, site of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. While looking for good photographs of London, I was contacted by London photographer Jason Hawkes, who had some wonderful images of London, seen from above at night (from a helicopter, to be exact) - some of which which he's agreed to let me share here. From Jason: "Shooting aerial photography during the daytime had its own difficulties, you are strapped tightly into a harness leaning out of the helicopter, shouting directions through the headsets to the pilot. If shooting in the day can be difficult, night and the lack of light causes its own set of problems, but overcoming them is half the fun and the results can be stunning. I shoot at night using the very latest digital cameras, mounted on either one or two gyro stablazied mounts, depending on the format of the camera and length of lens I'm having to use." - Source Boston.com

My inspiration today is about VR Photo- graphy. I have always been fascinated by 360 photography that i wanted to do it at my own disposal one of these days.

After searching google for Strobists in Bahrain last night, i stumbled upon the website of Nick Hardcastle http://www.hobnail.com/ that made me realize that i have forgotten this fascination for a long time and now i should try to learn it again. Nick has created amazing panoramas that looks very interesting with Quicktime VR or Virtual Reality. In VR photography, a VR Photo is sometimes called Immersive Photography. it can be defined as a panoramic image that is larger than 180 degree horizontal and displayed in a viewer that lets you pan around and look at it in different directions. The image changes perspective as you move along that gives you the feeling of actually looking around.

I posted Nick's website on our GPN @ Flickr forums and i got more information from other members and KaPepe who generously provided additional links about VR Photography. It is in http://www.panoramas.dk/panorama/ that i found some more extensive explanations.

I’ve had a few photos I wanted to share with you for some time now, but never really got round

I've had a few photos I wanted to share with you for some time now, but never really got round to using them, which is a shame since they're really nice (well, I think...). The problem is that they would best serve an article about school feeding, but I've already told you about that, and to be honest, I haven't discovered much more to tell you about concerning it...

So I guess I'll just show you the pictures and tell you what I was doing there at the time!

This first picture was taken during a field trip to the sector of Ngoma I f I remember correctly. The school we visited there isn't part of those I work on, but we visited it anyway because it was such a good example. What that school had that others don't is an ample supply of land to cultivate. And on this picture you can see some of its harvest, along with a boy who happened to be there at the time, following us around and helping with the tomatoes.

This second picture was taken in a school we visited, visit during which we had the chance to go inside a classroom and see how things were going on. It was really nice, and the main difference I noticed with the western schools is that the children really looked eager to learn things.

I've got more photos to share with you, but I have to keep some for later; I haven't forgotten about the piggy, it will come shortly, and I'm working on more pictures of Kigali. But now it's your turn to help me a bit, what would you like to hear me (or read me) talking about? Just leave a comment and I'll try and tell you about what you want!

we used to have a lot of these when i was a kid. they were flying just overhead on the street. my playmates and i had a blast hitting them with fly swatters. during the times when we were lucky enough to catch big ones, we would tie a string on their tails. we turned the poor things to kites, made them fly while we run and chased them and whirled them in every direction.

bad me.
