Elegy is a film by Isabel Coixet, who brought us The Secret Life of Words two years ago, so it was not surprising for me that Elegy was really good. It is based on the novel The Dying Animal by Philip Roth (actually the third novel in a series revolving around David Kepesh), though I like Elegy as a title better.

The story is about aging professor David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley), who lives from fling to fling with his students, after a rather painful divorce 30 odd years ago. In one of his lectures he meets Consuela Castillo (Penélope Cruz), with whom he begins an affair. Despite of the warnings from his best friend, George O'Hearn (Dennis Hopper), David falls in love with Consuela, but can't really change his ways. For example, he continues to see Carolyn (Patricia Clarkson), his fuck buddy. At the same time, the worn and difficult relationship he has with his son Kenneth (Peter Sarsgaard) gets tested in new ways.

As mentioned before, the movie is really very good. And it was so nice to see Ben Kingsley act again. I mean, really act, as in playing a believable character. Altogether, the acting was perfect, especially Patricia Clarkson, and more surprisingly Dennis Hopper.

The story is sad, there's not much of a consolation to be had, anywhere. Which is why I think that Elegy is the better title (if the book is similar to the movie, which I don't know, because I haven't read it yet). It's also hopelessly romantic, but in a very realistic way.

It definitely made me want to read the book, because of the wonderful narrative passages (which I think are direct quotes). And that's always a good sign.

The Film - Driven by Isabel Coixet

Released: August 8th
Genre: Drama
Rating: 15
Trailer: Click here

The Film - Driven by Isabel Coixet's visually assured and deeply observant direction, Elegy charts the passionate relationship between a celebrated college professor and a young woman whose beauty both ravishes and destabilizes him. As their intimate connection transforms them-more than either could imagine-a charged sexual contest evolves into an indelible love story. With humanistic warmth, wry wit and erotic intensity, Elegy explores the power of beauty to blind, to reveal and to transform. Starring Oscar-nominee Penélope Cruz and Academy Award-winner Ben Kingsley, with extraordinary supporting performances from Dennis Hopper, Patricia Clarkson and Peter Sarsgaard, Elegy is based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Roth's short novel The Dying Animal.

The Verdict - Beautiful women, are invisible. Were so dazzled by the outside, that we never make inside.

I really think the blurb above speaks far more affectionately and intimately about this film then i will ever be able to express towards how good i think Elegy surprisingly looks. The couple of Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz seem to have ignited a spark between themselves in this tender and overbearingly true to life story of an older man falling for a younger women; that has been conceived through a total disregard for the laws of attraction. Their chemistry just seems to radiate off of the screen. Dennis Hopper's supporting role looks to serve well as Ben Kingsley's closet confidante, often there to give Kingsley's character a rather un welcomed wake up call. Though these reality checks often seem fall on deaf ears. I'm not really one to opt for these kinda of mushy romantic tales, but lately there's been some great romantic dramas coming out.

I also mark out, hard, for Peter Sarsgaard (Garden State ) so i look forward to seeing how his role fits into all of this.

I was at my good friend Amy Lawlers' last night for a bottle of wine and the obligatory flick. She hadn't seen GARDEN STATE so, as it's very nice and extremely girl friendly I thought I'd show her it.

It was on getting to the quarry scene that I was hit with just how perfect the music was. The film as a whole is filled with great tunes, all of which seem to compliment the mood. This tune, Simon and Garfunkels' THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW YORK is PERFECT which gives the scene a poignant, beautiful quality.

Universal Jarhead - HD-DVD
Jake Gyllenhaal ("The Day After Tomorrow," "Moonlight Mile"), Jamie Foxx ("Ray,""Collateral") and Peter Sarsgaard ("Kinsey," "Boys Don't Cry") star in Universal Pictures' "Jarhead," the adaptation of Marine Anthony Swofford's bracing memoir that took readers into his disorienting firsthand experience in the Gulf War. "Jarhead" (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound truck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon.Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazingdesert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom. Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, aMarine lifer who heads up SW's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit. An irreverent and true account of a war thatwas antiseptically packaged a decade ago, "Jarhead" is lace with dark wit, honest inquisition and episodes that are at once surreal and poignant, tragic and absurd.

Based on Anthony Swoffords excellent memoir about his experiences as a Marine Sniper in Gulf War I, Jarhead is a war movie in which the waiting is a far greater factor upon the characters than the war itself, and the build up to combat is more drama than what combat is depicted. To some viewers hoping for typical movie action, this will seem like a cruel joke. But its not. Its just the story as it was written, and if you liked the book, you will probably like the movie. If you didnt, then the movie wont change your mind.

The movie follows the trajectory of Swofford (played with thoughtful intensity by Jake Gyllenhaal) from wayward Marine recruit (he joined because he "got lost on the way to college") to skilled Marine sniper, and on into the desert in preparation for the attack on Iraq. No-nonsense, Marine-for-life Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx), the man who recruited Swofford and his spotter Troy (Peter Sarsgaard) into the sniper team, leads them in training, and in waiting where their lives are dominated by endless tension, pointless exercises in absurdity (like playing football in the scorching heat of the desert in their gas masks so it will look better for the medias TV cameras), more training, and constant anticipation of the moment to come when theyll finally get to kill. When the war does come, it moves too fast for Swoffords sniper team, and the one chance they get at a kill--to do the one thing theyve trained so hard and waited so long for--eludes them, leaving them to wonder what was the point of all they had endured.

As directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the movie remains very loyal to the language and vision of the book, but it doesnt entirely work as the film needs something more than a literal translation to bring out its full potential. Mendess stark and, at times, apocalyptic visuals add a lot and strike the right tone: wide shots of inky-black oil raining down on the vast, empty desert from flaming oil wells contrasted with close-ups of crude-soaked faces struggling through the mire vividly bring to life the meaning of the tagline "welcome to the suck." But much of the second half of the movie will probably leave some viewers feeling disappointed in the cinematic experience, while others might appreciate its microcosmic depiction of modern chaos and aimlessness. Jarhead is one of those examples where the book is better than the movie, but not for lack of trying.

so i was watching "year of the dog," and admiring peter sarsgaard's chubby-man-in-shorts calves. i love him in that movie 'cause he looks so MIDWESTERN. wholesome face, nasally voice, chubby, badly dressed. which is technically in his blood, because he, much like jimmy, is from southern illinois. (it's weird to think that the farther south in this state you get, the more you identify with ST. LOUIS rather than CHICAGO.) and this is a hollywood star! it's like going into a fancy restaurant and instead of getting a chic meal served with impossibly small portions, you get a bit slab of pot roast with apple pie.

Here’s another five-pack of quickie reviews. This time, I’ve selected five movies I

Here's another five-pack of quickie reviews. This time, I've selected five movies I've watched recently on DVD through Zip.ca. Zip is one of the Netflix alternatives available here in Canada (Netflix is not available in Canada), where for a monthly fee, they mail you DVDs for rental. It's been a good way to catch up on movies that may have skipped past me in theatres (often this means foreign language or documentary films), or older titles I've always thought about seeing, but never remember when it comes time to go to the video store (especially since it's rare that I walk through the older stacks). I recommend it to DVD (or Blu-Ray) watchers in Canada, and, hey, if you're interested, let me know. I get membership points when people I refer to Zip become members.
Read on for reviews of:
After the Wedding (2007)
Desert Blue (1998)
In the Valley of Elah (2007)
The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
A New Wave (2007)

After the Wedding (2007)

Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Rolf Lassgård, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Stine Fischer Christensen, Christian Tafdrup

Directed by: Susanne Bier

I had wanted to see this before issuing my Andy Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but sadly, it didn't show up in the mail until the next day. If it had come earlier, it would've scored a nomination. It's a quietly powerful drama of the celebrating-the-human-spirit variety by way of Denmark, starring the bad guy with the bloody tear ducts from Casino Royale. The excellent cast and emotional plot drew me into the lives of the characters, with enough story to have me guessing at what would come next (even though its not a plot-driven movie). It's the sort of smart, adult, interpersonal drama that you don't see much of anymore in American cinema, and when you do, it's usually insipid and manipulative pablum. Thankfully, that's not the case here at all, with the film earning all its big emotional moments.

4/5

Desert Blue (1998)

Starring: Brendan Sexton III, Kate Hudson, Casey Affleck, John Heard, Christina Ricci, Sara Gilbert, Ethan Suplee, Peter Sarsgaard, Isidra Vega

Directed by: Morgan J. Freeman

A nondescript indie from 1998 that barely anyone has ever seen usually wouldn't warrant a write-up, even a quickie one like this. I bring it up to illustrate the downside of rental services like Zip. I'd heard of Desert Blue as its soundtrack is home to the super-cute Rilo Kiley song "The Frug", so when it came up one day on something I was reading on the internet, I decided to added it to my queue (since I was on the internet already). It sat there at the bottom of my queue, but then one day got sent, possibly because I may have been the only member in the entire company to have it on their list. With good reason. It's a terrible film that's like every stereotypical post-Sundance indie you can think of, with a meaningless, yet still overwrought plot, shiftless Gen X characters, the requisite indie rock soundtrack, and absolutely no craft. The lesson here is be careful what you put in your queue, since you just might get it.

1/5

In the Valley of Elah (2007)

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon, Charlize Theron, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Jason Patric, Frances Fisher

Directed by: Paul Haggis

I saw this right before the Oscars because of Tommy Lee Jones' Best Actor nomination (without it, I would've kept on ignoring it). I wasn't going to bother reviewing it, but then I wrote a review for Stop-Loss where I discussed why Iraq movies are unpopular (short version: they're aren't good enough to make it worth it). So I figured I'd back that up with a discussion of In the Valley of Elah, a movie that was both not as bad as I anticipated and exactly what I expected. The plotting was interesting enough, and the performances strong enough, that it ended up being a decent movie, but it was still brought down by Paul Haggis' hackery and need to bludgeon the audience with his painful metaphors. I really don't like Haggis' work, but his brand of middlebrow "serious" fare disguised as challenging art will probably be enough to keep getting awards attention, making me feel obligated to see them if for no other reason than to complain about their nomination.

3/5

The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini, Michael Badalucco, ,

Directed by: Joel and Ethan Coen

Deciding it was time to for me to fill the gaps in my Coen brothers viewing, I added a bunch of their movies to my queue, and this was the first Zip sent me. The Coens have been producing neo-noir films most of their career, so with this one, they decided to go whole hog and do a straight up noir tale. A twisty tale of murder and deception set in stylized 1949 California draped in black and white cinematography and hard-boiled narration, The Man Who Wasn't There plays more like a genre exercise than a complete movie. As a genre exercise, it's pretty good, making it a worthy addition to the Coens oeuvre based on style alone. That said, watching it felt more like an intellectual exercise than a truly engaging experience. Still, Roger Deakins cinematography here is simply amazing, and probably does more to establish mood and character than any other element besides the Coens direction. The story may have mostly bored me, but the photography fascinated me.

3/5

A New Wave (2007)

Starring: Andrew Keegan, Lacey Chabert, John Krasinski, Dean Edwards, William Sadler, Caprice Benedetti

Directed by: Jason Carvey

Besides diligently reading my blog and updating your queue accordingly, another way to fill up your list is to take an actor or director you like, and adding movies of theirs that you haven't seen. But be careful when you do that, or you could end up like my wife, who added this piece of crap due to her oversized crush on John Krasinski. I'm guessing this was filmed several years ago, then released directly to DVD in 2007 to cash in on Krasinski's rising popularity. Written and directed by first time (and hopefully last time) director Jason Carvey for an estimated $760,000, you'll watch it and wonder where all the money went (it couldn't have all gone to Lacey Chabert and William Sadler). It is an unbelievably stupid heist tale about three dumb guys who decide to rob a bank, using information they've gleaned from watching movies (and to give you an idea of how long ago I'm guessing this was filmed, the movies they rent are on VHS... and the music they listen to in their car is on cassette). The quality of filming makes you long for something with more visual flair and competency, you know, something along the lines of Clerks. I'm guessing that it was filmed on Super 8, although it's entirely possible Carvey just used a camcorder. An old camcorder.

This is a bad student film that should have never seen the light of day. The absolute worst element of the production is the framing, which chops off the tops of heads and leaves out important details from the bottom of the frame. I'm guessing what happened is that the movie was originally filmed with a 3:4 ratio, but was converted to 1.85:1 to make it look more cinematic. Either that, or Carvey didn't actually look through the viewfinder while filming. It made the movie that much more difficult to watch due to distraction, not that any of the content made it worthwhile. I'd say that this contends for the title "Worst Movie I've Ever Seen", except that it's too minor an effort to bother doing anything with but immediately forgetting. I'm sure there's tonnes of straight-to-DVD movies out there as bad as this one, but God willing, I'll never see them.

Reparto: Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep, Alan Arkin, Peter Sarsgaard, Omar Metwally, Igal Naor, Zineb Oukach, Moa Khouas.

"Fuck politics. We're here. All the rest is bullshit."

2005. Rated R. Directed by Sam Mendes. Based on the novel by Anthony Swofford. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black and Chris Cooper.

.

This is the first entry in a new regular feature, taking a look at movies that I thought got overlooked by critics and the public but are well-worth seeing. The criteria is obviously subjective, but I'm not going to include movies that won Oscars, were box-office hits, or have become well-regarded cult classics (Fight Club, for example). Nor will I include anything particularly obscure -- that will probably be a different feature at some point.

That brings us to today's entry, Sam Mendes' 2005 Gulf War I drama Jarhead, which despite starring Jake Gyllenhaal (around the time the Brokeback buzz was growing -- Jarhead was released a month earlier) and 2004 Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, didn't recoup its $70 million budget and received very mixed reviews. Mendes was coming off of Road to Perdition and American Beauty and though it was released late in the year and had Oscar hopes, the movie received no major awards or nominations.

Based on the memoir of the same name written by Anthony Swofford, the film focuses on Swofford (as played by Gyllenhaal) and his time in the Marines, from boot camp to service in the First Gulf War. Though I have not read the book, which was based on Swofford's real-life experiences, from what I've read the film does a good job adapting it despite fudging some of the details.

The first part of the film is Swofford at boot camp, ground that has been tread previously by Full Metal Jacket but is interesting nonetheless. Eventually he gets recruited by Sgt. Sykes (Foxx) to become a sniper, where he develops a strong bond with his spotter, Troy (Sarsgaard, a Wash U alum...that's right) and then gets sent off to war.

While Jarhead is a movie about war, it isn't a traditional war movie, focusing more on the day-to-day monotony of being a soldier and the effect of being stuck in a desert has on a man's psyche. This may have been one of the reasons the movie was misunderstood in its first go-around -- there are no true huge battle scenes -- it is a slower, more contemplative film that you would expect. Most of the drama comes in the relationships between the guys and their isolation from their normal lives, especially their wives & girlfriends from back home. It's a perspective that isn't often shown in cinema.

Mendes does a very good job directing, and the cinematography and production design does an excellent job of giving the audience an idea of what it was like to actually be there. There are some truly memorable, goosebump inducing scenes, including what could be described as the climax. It is a solid, well-done movie all around, and the acting is solid throughout, though only Sarsgaard delivers a standout performance. Foxx doesn't have much screen time in a supporting part, and while Chris Cooper shows up in a part meant for him, it's just a glorified cameo. There are many recognizable faces, such as Dennis Haysbert and John Krasinski in a pre-Jim Halpert role.

Gyllenhaal gives the performance his all, and it's tough to know how much is the writing, but we really never get into Swofford's head, which considering he's the narrator, is definitely a weakness. We understand the boredom and isolation and the well-deserved paranoia about his girlfriend, but we don't get a great idea of what makes him tick. Part of it is probably the source material, but there are times when his behavior is a little too inconsistent and probably exaggerated from real life. From the films I've seen him in, Gyllenhaal functions better as a reactor than an actor, and when he's forced to carry scenes it doesn't go over as well.

All in all, Jarhead was one of the best films of 2005, and as the second Iraq War drags on it is an interesting look into the mind of a soldier, even if the wars are very, very different. And whatever way the public can be reminded how much being a soldier sucks and how awful war can be is probably a good thing. While it isn't an epic like a Saving Private Ryan or even the best film about the first Gulf War (Three Kings wins that honor), it has been (unfairly) forgotten pretty quickly. If you haven't seen it, check it out -- it'll be worth your time.

Parabéns a esses soldados-da-mídia!

Uau!

Logo no início do filme ouvirá "Don't worry, be happy"; depois um "Gonna make you sweat (Everybody dance now)"; tem Nirvana; The Doors; T-Rex - "Bang a gong (get it on)"; além da clássica "Cavalgadas das Valkírias", Wagner; entre outras.

Nota: 7,5.

Por: Valéria Miguez (LELLA).

Soldado Anônimo (Jarhead). 2005. EUA. Direção: Sam Mendes. Elenco: Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Jamie Foxx, Scott MacDonald, Brian Geraghty. Gênero: Ação, Comédia, Drama, Guerra. Duração: 123 minutos.

--------
Regie:
Gavin Hood (Wolverine -> 2009)
--------------------------------------
Darsteller:

--- Omar Metwally

--- Reese Witherspoon (Eiskalte Engel, Natürlich Blond, Walk the line)

--- Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky, Bubble Boy, The day after tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain)

--- Meryl Streep ( Lemony Snicket - Rätselhafte Ereignisse, Der Teufel trägt Prada)

--- Peter Sarsgaard (Garden State, Jarhead – Willkommen im Dreck)

--- Alan Arkin (Edward mit den Scherenhänden, Gattaca)
---------------------------------------------------------------

(Gavin Hood, USA/Sudafrica 2007)
