Creativity can be implemented on any subjects. Creativity having a part in making art sculptures, musics, concepts, way of business strategy, way of calculate the data, in general creativity  has a part in every things that we want to do. I'm saying this because creativity is not just act in the art concepts. Most people just seeing creativity in obvious way not about how to define the problems, as example.

As my self, I prefer to see the creativity from the point of common people seeing it. Because I am the common people. I like to see things that have a prestige on it. I like to see statue or figures that formed and described another person or character history.

With all of the condition that extract the human physical imagination and attraction, this one person had created a story ,implements the event and creating the prestige in the form of figures. At this time, this one person designed/illustration and stories have been a breaking issue in many nations. People also adore and salute to this person because of his idea of mixing the idealism and taste of public without reducing the concepts.

He is the CEO of the McFarlane Toys Company. The peson is called Todd Mc'Farlane

Todd McFarlane was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on March 16, 1961. Todd first interest in the world of comic books when he was in high school. He also likes to play and watch baseball.

In 1984 ,Todd's firt working project is the back up story in Epic Comics' Coyote. After the success of the Coyote, he soon working with the marvel. He illustrated several issues of Marvel's  Incredible Hulk.

Meanwhile, McFarlane married a girl who was the "sweetheart" on the high school, Wanda, in July 1985. What an incredible lives was it? (for me... haha) , to be an artist, married a lovely wife...what a life that I really want to achieve. So back to the history.

Mc farlane joined the writer of The Amazing Spiderman, David Michelinie in 1987. He changed the character appearance to be more spider like the large eyes of the spider and the wiry limbs.

All of you must have know that the character on the spiderman  called Venom right? Mc Farlane also helped to create it and the character had become a wildly popular villain. 

The works on the amazing spiderman had turned him into an industry superstar. In 1990, The result of the hard working is the launched of the monthly Spiderman Series which Mc Farlane wrote and illustrated by himself. 

Spider-Man #1 sold 2.5 million copies, it was the big event that had been rolling over the comic industry to be the pioneer in early 1990's. 

In 1991, Todd McFarlane took a 6 months hiatus from Marvel to take care of his new born daughter. During his hiatus on Marvel Company, he also began to make a plan for his own publishing company. 

This is happen because Todd had been frustrated and bored about the workings of the mainstream publishing companies. Todd want his creativity to be more implemented and crossover the boundaries of the boss's control. Todd spokes with the other artists that working in Marvel who learning to felt the same way about it.

And then, from the idealism and creativity that he had, Todd MCfarlane created a strong wild powerful devil called Spawn. At first he implemented the idea on the Image Comics series. Therefore Todd said "Spawn is in this seedy, David Lynch kind of world that isn't quite right. I made it dark to make the guy who he is. If the shadows are removed, then the essence of the character is removed," 

The spawn first issue had been sold for 1.7 million copies. It is the best selling comic book independent. After that, Spawn has continued to be the top selling comic title in the U.S and all over the world, 35 countries at total with ten different languages.

According to the info on http://en.marveldatabase.com/Todd_McFarlane, Todd McFarlane's work has won him numerous awards over the years, including a 1992 National Cartoonists Society Award for Best Comic Book.

Todd Mcfarlane began to try other things that related to the world of art. Todd had licensed a toy companies, movie studios, and television producer.

Because many company unwilling to grant him the creative control over the toy production based on the characters that Todd's created. In 1994, Todd Mcfarlane decided to make his own toy company (McFarlane Toys Company). The Toys includes all of this segmentation:

- Intricately Detailed

- Highly Articulated

- Reasonably Priced

As you can see the evolution of the spawn figures had been implemented through year to year. Until now in 2008 Todd Mcfarlane has been running the company and still producing toys especially spawn figures.

So back to the biography of Todd Mcfarlane that made me choose him to be the most creative person on earth. Todd MCfarlane not just only interest in comic and toys industry. Todd also had a deal with every major studio to make Spawn into the movie. He acted as the scriptwriters and the production man also. The Spawn Film was opened in August 1997. Despite the movie not so good in my opinion, It was ranking on a 2nd place in a box office in week one. After the success of the Spawn Movie, Todd began as an Executive Producer for the Todd McFarlane's Spawn (series) that was showing in HBO in animated.

NOT JUST THAT!

Todd McFarlane also "swimming" in the sea of music industry. He helped Pearl Jam to make their video music. He collaborated with Eddie Vedder to create animated video which song called "Do The Evolution" from the album Yield. The Video music was nominated for " Best Short Form Music Video" for 1999 Grammy Awards.

NOT JUST THAT!

He also helped KORN band to produce the "Freak on a Leash"  music video from Follow The Leader Album. The result is one Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Awards! Wow! (Was that Incredible!?)

So in the conclusion, if we are an idealism person. Just focus on our idea and imagination and implement it. We better try not just thinking that it can be failed or something. We have to be brave like Todd McFarlane. Even though he quit the job from Marvel because he could not afford what he think of doesn't mean that he give up on it and just "yelling". He began something that he focused on and the result with the hardworking is like nowadays. It is just so perfect. 

"My ability to deliver a good product is my greatest strength," said McFarlane. "I'd like to be remembered as a guy who turned out some quality comics and toys, while doing a few different things even if it wasn't the easiest road to follow."

Lo que pretendía ser un inocente upgrade de mi Apple TV se convirtió en una afortunada renta de película en oferta. Diez pesos y unas horas más tarde me puse el traje de "papa de sillón" para conocer la historia del skateboarding contemporáneo.

En los 70´s y 80´s la NFL era referente en la producción documentales deportivos. En los 90´s ESPN se quedó con el cetro. Pero este nuevo milenio Stacy Peralta logró con esta cinta del 2001 superar la línea marcada.

Tenía que hacerlo. Esta cinta es, en parte, la historia de su vida.

La influencia del Surfing en la tabla de asfalto, la creación de las llantas de poliuretano, la sequía californiana. Todos estos elementos, encantadores y mágicos, son trozos de la excelente deconstrucción que realiza Peralta para contar la historia del Zephyr Skateboard Team. 

Las entrevistas con los protagonistas, fotógrafos y músicos infuenciados por el fenómeno (Henry Rollins y Jeff Ament de Pearl Jam entre otros)  y la narración de Sean Penn (el dejar una toma con error es un increíble acierto) logran un retrato redondo de la cultura de la calle.

El soundtrack es igual de atinado y sugerente (Stooges, Fugazi, Bowie, Devo, Sneaker Pimps).

En resumidas cuentas un festín.

De las pocas películas que después de rentar estoy dispuesto a comprar. De hecho después de verla no pude resistirme a comprar un par de rolas y el disco de Fugazi... y no me arrepiento.

Descubrí a Pearl Jam hace un par de años cuando me pasaron el CD de No Core. Por aquel entonces, en sus principios, tocaban grunge (género del que soy amante) pero el grupo supo reinventarse y adaptarse a los tiempos, con lo que no se los puede encajar en un género (algo que hace que los valore especialmente).

Esta canción la descubrí antes del verano gracias a un colega y he de decir que desde el primer día me pareció sublime. Una maldita obra maestra que se complementa con un videoclip impresionante, que relata con una inusual crudeza el pasado, presente y futuro de la raza humana, desde su aparición hasta su extinción debido a la sobreexplotación del planeta y al incansable ansia de poder que nos caracteriza. Aunque pueda tacharse de excesivamente catastrofista, a mí no me lo parece tanto (de hecho creo que si no cambian las cosas ésta puede ser una profecía bastante exacta de lo que nos espera).

Una crítica a la religión, a los que nos quieren usar para intereses propios y, de paso, a toda la especie humana y a nuestra irresponsabilidad e insolidariedad, no sólo con las demás especies sino con nosotros mismos y con el planeta que nos da la vida.

Pero ya se sabe, It's evolution, baby.

Pearl Jam were my favourite band for years. I remember the very first time I bought one of their CD's, it came in a cardboard-sleeve type of case, like all their bootlegs from that era used to be. This one in particular was '23.5.00, Estádio do Restelo, Lisbon, Portugal'.

Truth be told, I can't listen to those CD's now, not because I don't like the band anymore (I still like them), but they were played to exhaustion, back in 2000, and they're all scratched by now, my stereo won't even read them.

Oh well, I think you can guess it by now, Pearl Jam hold a very sweet spot in my heart, and I guess it'll always be that way. So, it would be unfair to not mention them in this blog.

I'm an active member in some internet messageboards, most of them related to music, and I remember this particular thread someone opened, titled 'Pearl Jam: Yield', and the original post read someting like this:

"I've never really liked Pearl Jam, but somehow Yield is one of my favorite all time albums.
Great guitar sounds. killer songs.
Anyone else dig it?"

Most of the following posts featured people saying "Oh, that one is good, but I prefer «insert random Pearl Jam album name here»", until someone realized this:

"That's the funny thing about Pearl Jam - ask ten different fans which album is their fav, and they'll give you ten different answers."

And I guess that's really how it is about Pearl Jam. So, out of all albums, why Binaural?

Well, I chose to write about Pearl Jam today because I was listening to them (actually, Binaural is playing as I write this post), and even if I wasn't listening to Binaural, that'd be the album I'd post here. In part because that's the album they were promoting in that 2000 tour, but mostly because I love every single song in that album. If I had to pick my favourite Pearl Jam songs (which would be a really hard task, now that I think of it), I would have to pick at least three songs from this album. Funny thing, they're next to each other in the album (Light Years, Nothing As It Seems, Thin Air).

I could sit here all night, and keep writing about how much this band means to me, but I think you must be bored enough by now :)

Según la Wikipedia, la Generación X considera rangos que van del año 1965 hasta el de 1984 pero aclara que se debaten las fechas exactas que definen a esta generación, en terminos generales suele afirmarse que la Generación X va del año 65 al 75, aunque también hay quienes lo llevan hasta el 81.

Crecimos viendo caricaturas inmersos en la fantasia de la televisión, la gran mayoria hijos de Baby Boomers (esto en referencia de aquellos nacidos en tiempos de gran crecimiento poblacional), entrando a los 80's nuevamente la televisión pero ahora con MTV como protagonista acercandonos música en video, New Wave, Rock Pesado ligeramente empapado de la esencia del Pop, siendo jovenes con menos manifestaciones ideologicas que la generación anterior, pero con la misma rebeldía de todas las otras generaciones.

Sumando a todo esto, la cinematografía ochentera con Los Gremlins, Poltergeist, Amadeus, Los Cazafantasmas, Footloose, Flashdance, Top Gun, las peliculas de Molly Ringwald...

Además del gran descubrimiento de esa generación: los videojuegos desde su forma más primitiva, el Pong y el Breakout, hasta llegar al Pac Man y al Mario Bros, pasando por Space Invaders, Asteroids y Galaxian, entre otros, al principio por medio de las consolas que habia en los establecimientos y después con el Atari.

Ya después del cubo de Rubik, el walkman y todas aquellas cosas que ocupaban nuestro tiempo en los 80's, llegaron los 90's con un sonido nuevo llamado Grunge, con Nirvana como principal representante, junto a Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Pixies y Sonic Youth.

A continuación DIEZ DIFERENCIAS GENERACIONALES que circulan por la red:

Estas son, de acuerdo con los expertos, diez diferencias específicas de mentalidad:

1. Colaboran más.

"Los integrantes de la generación "X" son más colaboradores. Se toman el trabajo de equipo en serio. Los miembros de la generación "X" crecieron con la idea del equipo, y les gusta". En cambio, en el caso de los ejecutivos tradicionales el concepto de trabajo en equipo se introdujo cuando muchos de ellos ya tenían algunos años inmersos en la empresa. Algunos todavía manifiestan reticencias en cuanto al valor del trabajo en equipo.

2. Dan menos valor a las jerarquías.

Por lo tanto se debe tratar a los miembros de generación "X" como iguales, no como subordinados. Es necesario incluir a los miembros de la generación "X" en el proceso de aprendizaje. Si un instructor le da una orden a un ejecutivo tradicional, probablemente la lleve a cabo. En cambio, es muy posible que el de la generación "X" no lo haga hasta que esté convencido de que es lo correcto.

3. Son más altruistas.

Los miembros de la generación "X" ingresan a las empresas y aceptan participar en proyectos laborales por razones más altruistas que los ejecutivos tradicionales. No consideran que el estatus está necesariamente vinculado con el éxito y la felicidad.

4. Se sienten más a gusto trabajando al lado de mujeres que los ejecutivos tradicionales.

Esta es la primera generación en la cual tanto hombres como mujeres no tienen ninguna preferencia por tener un jefe hombre o mujer.

5. Son más hábiles para la administración.

Más miembros de la generación "X" han estudiado administración formalmente, y tienen un enfoque más profesional que el que tenían los ejecutivos tradicionales a la misma edad". A diferencia, los ejecutivos tradicionales terminaban en puestos directivos sin ninguna capacitación.

6. Son la generación de la informática.

Las computadoras siempre han formado parte de su vida, y las manejan mucho mejor que los ejecutivos tradicionales. Los "X" son la primera generación de la informática".

7. Insisten en equilibrar la vida y el trabajo.

Para un miembro de la generación "X" esto es de suma importancia y generalmente valoran mucho el tener y disfrutar una vida independiente del trabajo.

8. Tienen diferentes estilos de comunicación.

Los ejecutivos tradicionales son poco asertivos y tienen un estilo de comunicación mucho más "diplomático" para hablar, incluso cuando se dirigen a sus compañeros de curso son más indirectos; los de la generación "X" tienden a ser más abiertos y directos.

9. Son menos leales.

Si la lealtad se define como la disposición a quedarse en una compañía en las buenas y en las malas, los miembros de la generación "X" no pasan la prueba. Siempre están listos para cambiarse al próximo trabajo, ya que tienen más confianza en sí mismos que los ejecutivos tradicionales. Cuando un trabajo ha dejado de ser satisfactorio desde el punto de vista creativo, intelectual, emocional o económico, no tienen miedo en actualizar su curriculum e ir en busca de un nuevo empleo. Los miembros de la generación "X" son leales a su profesión, no a su empleador, mientras que los ejecutivos tradicionales mantienen la lealtad a su compañía y sienten que los demás deberían pensar igual.

10. Ignoran las reglas.

Los miembros de la generación "X" siempre están deprisa, luchan para obtener resultados y tienden a esquivar reglas y procedimientos. Están dispuestos a correr riesgos e innovar, incluso cuando ello pueda enloquecer a un instructor.
Los miembros de la generación "X" no dudan en criticar los estilos de administración de los ejecutivos tradicionales y con frecuencia se quejan de ello. Dicen que los ejecutivos tradicionales se saben el discurso pero no lo siguen; ponen poca atención en la participación y el trabajo en equipo.

Es más, consideran que muchas veces los ejecutivos tradicionales y los instructores a menudo piensan: "Estamos en lo correcto, ellos están mal", y tratan de cambiar la actitud de los jóvenes.

Con frecuencia el primer error que se comete al tratar de capacitar a un integrante de la generación "X" es suponer que él o ella se parecen a un ejecutivo tradicional. El segundo error consiste en tratar de cambiar a toda costa su mentalidad. El tercer error es garrafal y tiene que ver con el hecho de dar demasiada importancia a las diferencias generacionales.

Douglas Coupland, escritor canadiense, popularizó el término Generación X en su novela "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture" publicada el 11 de marzo de 1991, que fue aclamada por la crítica al capturar el momento de la gente de aquel entonces, para la cual el título resultaba especialmente apropiado. Sin saberlo, había hecho popular uno de los nombres de toda su generación (su edad coincidía aproximadamente con la de la Generación X). A raíz de esto, Coupland participó en una serie de anuncios promocionales de la MTV, leyendo fragmentos de su libro. A la "Generación X" también se la conoce a veces como Generación sin nombre. La sucesora de esta generación se conoce como la Generación Y.

Many people say that the time you spent in middle school and high school are some of the greatest times of your life and this backs up my opinion of the 90s. Lets revisit the 90s. The Berlin Wall fell, MC Hammer introduced us to pants that could also serve as a parachute in emergency situations, Kurt Cobain was singing about a female deorderant, Clinton was using stogies for things you would only see on late night Cinemax, Crystal Clear Pepsi rocked our taste buds and people were freaking out about Y2K. IT WAS GREAT!

I look at the 2000's and think "Dam, the 90's were so much better". Let's start off with the music. I recently "purchased" a 4gb collection of 90s music on the internet and it reminded me of how great the music of the 90's truly was. How can you say NO to songs by a guy named Coolio, Vanilla Ice and Crash Test Dummies? I heard some of the rap that is "cool" and I can't help myself but laugh. I mean come on, there are rappers named FLO-RIDA and Soulja Boy. Don't you think Biggie would smack (or pop a cap, dam I am hood) the living crap out of these guys if he was still here? I can see Soulja boy crying if 2Pac wrote a "Hit Em Up" style rap dedicated to his ridiculous dancing antics. I think the same has to go for what is passing for Rock too. I cannot explain how much I HATE NICKELBACK! Everytime these guys come on the radio I can feel the blood coming from my ears after hearing these douche bags sing. Give me some Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Foo Fighters any day over these bubble-gum rock groups.

As far as clothing goes for the 90's, I think that it is a wash with today. Yes, I did have the 90s uniform flannel shirt, courderoy pants and long hair (which I kept until 2001, dam I was a rebel). Such garmits as Cross Colors, Gerbreau, silk shirts and hats with messages on them occupied your closet. Today's fashion isn't much better though. I see Goth kids or guys wearing jeans that are tight enough to tell me if they were "cut" or not and want to shake the hell out of these kids and tell them how riduculous they look. So, we will have to consider this match up a draw.

All in all, I think the 90s were so great because I was having a lot of fun and enjoying life. The 90s came with little responsibility for me and I cashed in on every moment of it. I am sure that one day my child will think that the 2020's were the greatest, but who knows. Maybe by 2020, Taco Bell will be the restaurant of the future like the Sly Stallone masterpiece "Demolition Man" predicted. That is just the way I see it. Uno de los temas de Pearl Jam que más me gustan en directo es este "retrovisor" de su segundo disco Vs., especialmente el minuto final del tema, que va "in crescendo" y es realmente sublime.

Es uno de los primeros temas en los que el cantante Eddie Vedder toca también la guitarra, y una curiosidad del disco en estudio es que justo al terminar el tema, podéis oir dos golpes secos, que corresponden a las baquetas que el batería Dave Abbruzzese lanzó contra la pared, en respuesta a la presión que el productor Brendan O'Brian imponía sobre el grupo durante la grabación del disco.

Never mind that it’s literally been 100 years since the Cubs last won a championship. What’s front and center here - and always - is Cub fan loyalty, and it’s a fine customer loyalty case study in its own right.

Like it or lump it, if things don’t work out for us this October, long-suffering Cubs fans are content to once again say “next year is our year!” A World Series championship would of course be ideal. Yet, if it’s not in the cards, there is still so much aura around the Cubs – you can’t help but remain a fan, or finally become one.

Wrigley Field's friendly confines alone provide more appeal than most ham-and-egger major league teams could ever hope for. Add a fiery manager, some refreshing beverages, and a lineup that gave us 97 wins to 64 losses this season and all of a sudden we’re cooking with gas.

Selling out home game after home game, regardless of record, is one of the biggest validation points for the Cubs’ mass appeal. Fans who follow the team from around the globe are another. Even pre-season games at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona can require paying premium prices to ticket brokers just to get in and essentially see the team practice.

Maybe there’s some “lovable loser” stigma here, although I think what has really occurred over the years with the Cubs is a favorable customer experience. It isn’t just a couple players or even the team on the field (they’re quite important of course). It’s the entire package and sense of membership the Cubs brand creates.

Consider the opportunities an organization has when it achieves this kind of following. Because the Cubs have genuinely shown interest in delivering an enjoyable baseball experience for years on end, their fans are open to suggestion: new or even alternative kinds of ticket packages, online community feedback that they’d otherwise have to pay for, non-game events, and weathering potential changes in team ownership and management are just a few simple examples that come to mind.

Much of that business is for the off-season though. For now, it’s time to focus on shaking the curse and getting that ring. Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam vocalist, Chicago native, and Cubs fan captures the feeling well with his song “All The Way.”

I like the Cubs' chances in this game. They are the favorite sending Ryan Dempster to the mound who is an absurd 14-3 in the friendly confines backed by a team who won 55 games at home. Only time will tell and as Cubs fans, really as Chicago fans we certainly understand that just about anything can happen. Finally congratulations to the White Sox for their win last night and their own playoff birth, good for them.

"She Says" - Howie Day
I went to see Howie Day once live at a smaller concert venue here in the City of Roses. I remember him being either really drunk or really stoned because he kind of floundered through his performance and we left early. But this was always one of the songs I really liked by him. I think I always thought of it as a song that I really think fits any boys perspective who ever dates me. I'm not super open and usually there are all sorts of various other meanings and layers to the things I do or say when I get frustrated while in relationships. Some might call it complex, and others might call it being a closed off pain; to each their own...but that might also explain why I am perpetually single...moving on...

"Big Me" - Foo Fighters
My real appreciation for the Foo Fighters came from when 2006 when I saw them at an awesome outdoor multi-band show called Bridge School at Shoreline in California. I'll admit I never really liked Nirvana and therefore never really got interested into what the band mates did post-Kurt suicide. Then suddenly I was at an 8+ hour live rock concert and here I was listening to an accoustic version of Big Me with some awesome lady accompanying on the chorus and it was fantastic. So the only album of Foo Fighters I own is Skin and Bones, a live performance album with the same accoustic duet version. Check it out if you get a chance - it's hands down 10 times better than the original album version.

"Black" - Pearl Jam
I suppose it wouldn't be a Savvy 6 musical montage if there wasn't some PJ on the list. Black is one of my favorite songs and I find it to be an insanely romantic love song. The lyrics are some of my favorite and everytime I have heard it performed it's been this great experience with the audience screaming along - plus it has an epic verse of lyrics :

"Sophomore Slump of Come Back of the Year" - Fall Out Boy
Don't judge me, this is from an older FOB album (before life was all US Weekly's and Pete Wentz's bad music content show on MTV and marriage to a Simpson girl). This is one of the best workout songs in my collection. Fantastic line "I need to keep you like this in my mind, so give in or just give up" - and while it's not going to win any Grammy's it has a fun beat and keeps me from staring at the clock in the gym watching the seconds slowly tick down on the treadmill. I'm a sucker for a good beat and cheap distraction.

"The Scientist" - Coldplay
When I was 17 years old I dated a guy (the aforementioned Mr. Emo) who had a friend from England who kept raving about this band from home. I was a huge music (i.e. snob) and always looking for new bands - he burned me a CD and I was hooked. A few months later the band had a small concert tour and were coming to play a tiny venue downtown so I dragged Mr. Emo out with me and stood front row through a concert where I not only became even more into Coldplay but also discovered Powderfinger (one of my top bands on the favorite and quality music scale). Within 6 months a song called "Yellow" hit the airwaves and the rest is history I suppose. I did manage to see Coldplay one additional time in a large venue right after Yellow was becoming a hit. Once again we were in the front row and the only reason it wasn't as good was because they were without Powderfinger. The Scientist was one of a small handful of songs since the Parachutes album that I have really liked.

"Loving You" - Paolo Nutini
There is something fantastic about this song that leaves me always singing along without ever really meaning to. It's just one of those songs and set of lyrics that makes all girls want to date a musician who will write songs for her and dedicate the live performance to her night after night on the road as well in the album liner notes...or maybe that's just my dream...

And as you slide through the door
With your morals on your sleeve
I think it's time for all those morals to leave

"I have you to thank" - Gavin DeGraw
The first time I heard this song I had one person automatically come to mind...so consider this my version of an awesome dedication in the liner notes of the bloggingsphere:

   Do the Evolution apareció en el quinto trabajo de la banda, Yield, publicado en 1998.  Eddie Vedder, compositor de la letra, declaró que esta canción era su favorita del disco. Decía el cantante que le gustaba porque en el resultado final no parecía que fuera él quien cantaba. En la misma entrevista al Philadelphia Inquirer en 1998, dijo que la canción trataba sobre aquellos borrachos de tecnología que piensan que  son los que pueden controlar a los seres vivos que poblan el planeta. En realidad fue el libro que publicara Danny Quinn en el año 1992, titulado Ishmael, el que  sirvió de inspiración a la banda para la concepción del disco. Según declaró el cantante, las ideas que transmite la lectura de este libro le rondaron en su cabeza durante más de un año y, sin duda alguna, se reflejaron en el álbum. El mismo Danny Quinn dijo que Do the Evolution era el tema que mejor reflejaba lo que había querido expresar en su novela. No os explico nada más sobre el libro porque esto ya es un aliciente para echarle una ojeada ¿verdad?.

   Sobre el video, aunque reconozco que yo no lo conocía, se ha escrito y hablado mucho. La banda dejó de grabar videos en 1992 porque pensaba que destrozaba el espíritu musical y porque odiaban el hecho de grabarlos. No obstante, en 1998 rompieron la regla para elaborar esta maravilla que tan bien acompaña a la canción. Es evidente que esta obra no destroza la canción en ningún sentido y que el hecho de que no aparezcan en todo el metraje tuvo que ser bastante relevante a la hora de tomar la decisión.

   Dos profesionales del cómic fueron los encargados de su realización. Todd McFarlane obtuvo su éxito mundial con la creación del antihéroe llamado Spawn en el año 1992. Co-dirigió el video Kevin Altieri quien realizara la serie de animación de Batman para la Warner,  también en el prolífico año 1992. http://www.batmantas.com/. Como curiosidad comentar que el personaje de la chica en el video, que representa la muerte, está inspirado en el de Death del cómic The Sandman de Neil Gaiman (www.neilgaiman.com).

"A band with Swords and Uggs"

"Toor-izz-ass, clap, Toor-izz-ass, clap, Toor-izz-ass, clap”… then onto the stage at Southampton Guildhall exploded several large blonde men (and a laydee) clad in lumps of dead sheep and (mostly) wearing ill-fitting uggs.

And Lo, this was Turisas come unto us.

Turisas is a Finnish viking metal band from Hämeenlinna. They were established in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström and designated almost at once as a Viking Metal band - named after an ancient Finnish God of War.

When I saw them last night  on their current tour (supporting ‘Dragonforce’) they exclaimed their music was mighty ‘battle metal’. Since they use accordion and violin, I find this a little hard to swallow. Since when do the massed bands of Her Majesty’s Household Division (for instance) lug squeeze-boxes and fiddles onto the battleground? But because of this morris-dance affectation, the band could also be pigeonholed into the folk metal genre ( see also Finntroll, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Moonsorrow.)

The supposedly heavy metal guitars in this band are, to be honest, almost extraneous and the rhythm guitar is often employed just for that-chugging out some rhythm- whilst the bass plunks away unobtrusively. The featured instrument in this band is the violin, courtesy of Olli Vanska. According to Turisas this meek little humble instrument is about to re-adjust the cosmic equilibrium that has been altered by those arrogant upstarts- the wicked electric guitars! Haven’t they heard of ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ in Finnish-land?

Any band that has, as a major feature of its repertoire, Boney M’s singalonga-cossack ‘Ra Ra Rasputin’ is OK by me. This song always was plagiarism at its finest, mixing some trad. Turkish anthems with Cozy Powell’s ‘Dance With The Devil’ beat and pretending to be authentic disco. So why shouldn’t a viking-metal band claim it is their anthem?

Even though Turisas has bouzouki and balalejka-themed pretensions, this is ultimately music that Klingon’s would listen to around the campfire whilst droning on about the House of Duras. Lots of anthemic battle-shouting and Oi Oi Oi’s, then plenty of strutting about doing semi-nazi saluting type stuff. The average age of the crowd at Southampton was about 15… so maybe this is something to be a tiny bit concerned about.  But, no, this is he-man stuff, it is comic book stuff, it is Blue Peter teenage mutant ninja turtles in a bit of sticky-back plastic stuff. A bit of dressing up (albeit as a Viking goat-ostler) and striding around looking big and sounding scary is just fun and didn’t ever hurt anyone. Did it?. When was the last time Finland invaded anything (other than the Eurovision)? And, to be honest,  these leering viking-skulls in their leather nappies are no more fierce, frightening or imposing than your average school music teacher.

Unlike power-metal, there is not much symphonic context within the sound of Turisas, just a lot of growling and some riff-based hokum. There isn’t much light there either, the dirges are battle anthems for the office of the dead. On the whole, the Nordic jeremiad’s are less pessimistic than they ought to be, relishing and celebrating death and honour rather more like football anthems than proper warrior eulogies.

The blackness is not really in there either (unlike Opeth, Trivium, Annihilator, Wintersun etc) mainly because: 1) You can’t take men wearing uggs and sheepskin throws seriously and 2) because any band that plays Boney M disco covers is about as manly and masculine as Julian Clary wearing a pink tutu whilst dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy in this season’s ‘end of the pier’ performance of Round the Horn. So this is not a band for death metal/black metal heads.  It is just a fun ‘show-band’ for the kids.

Southampton is noted for being the home of the RMS Titanic and the Spitfire, both went down well. So did Turisas. That says a lot.
