The gist of the story is that the.. the... what do you call them? Degenerates? Thugs? Morons? .. supposedly cut the store's phone lines, broke the glass on the door and stole 15 handguns and 250 rounds of ammunition. They were caught and probably the most disturbing part of the whole deal is that one of them was only 11 years old.

More on that in a minute... I just want to add one thing here before I forget...

The article said that the robbery was a "... well, thought out plan." If it was SO well thought out, then how did they get caught? Personally, I think she's given them more brain cells then they deserve but that's just my opinion.

Getting back to the 11 year old.

What do you think could possibly be the justification for getting an 11 year old involved in a crime of this magnitude. And don't be fooled by the stories of hard-ship youth that I'm sure is bound to be spewed. What the hell WOULD you're intention be with robbing a gun store? Can't actually claim you needed food for your dying iguana now, can you?

Personally :: and I could be wrong because I haven't seen a picture of him :: but I think he was used because of his size. Squeeze in places, under places, around places.. hell, throw him over a fence if they had to. I seriously doubt he was just along for the ride.

I'm interested to see how this is going to play out. Especially because now, I'm more leery about who's walking around now and the 1am walks to WaWa now seems kind of sinister. I'm not delusional.. I know crime is everywhere. But when one moves from the Urban to the Suburban, I think some complacency comes too.

Like THE greatest guy in the world says: The only way to get illegal guns off the street is to get the people using them off the street. Make sense to me.

Thoughts?

Target is known for its red bull’s eye, friendly faces, and cheap but chic designer products. In fact, it has worked hard to brand itself as a place where consumers can “expect more, [but] pay less.” However, a recent article in Ad Age revealed that Target’s designer focused atmosphere might be causing it to lose customers in the tightening economy. As a result, Target is focusing on communicating to customer’s that it’s products are just as competitively priced as other big-box realtors such as Wal-Mart.  

Although, I can definitely understand where Target is coming from, I don’t believe in their strategy. One of the reasons I go into Target rather than Wal-Mart is because I believe that because the price is higher, I get better quality products. I go to Target because while I may not be able to afford a gorgeous $300 designer bag from Nordstrom I can afford a reasonably priced $50 Target bag and would never shop at Wal-Mart for a $25 knock-off designer bag, when I can get the read-deal at Target. No matter what Target says, their prices will probably never be able as low.  Therefore, for now, I like Target just the way it is.

Escasa o nula tiene que ser la catadura moral de la persona que se ríe de la muerte de 153 personas. Miserable, inhumano es aquel que lo hace, insensible ante el dolor que puedan padecer los familiares de las víctimas.

Aunque se ampare en su libertad de expresión, aunque exista humor negro acerca de cualquier catástrofe (yo mismo me sé un buen repertorio), esta actuación de Arturo J. Paniagua es una expresión de execrable inmundicia, mayor si tenemos en cuenta su trayectoria profesional, toda ella relacionada con el periodismo y la comunicación, facetas en las que hay que acercarse al otro, escucharlo, empatizar (o casi) con él. Pero después de esto, ha demostrado tener una sensibilidad minúscula.

Miento y rectifico, sí tiene sensibilidad, la misma que un cucurbitáceo.

Él, muy ufano, se regodea en su pestilencia y afirma: "Pierdo followers, amigos no". Dudo mucho que delante de sus "amigos" suelte las mismas mierdas que ha soltado, seguramente alguno le llame la atención, cosa que en Twitter no sé si ha pasado.

Ni sé si pasará, porque delante de nosotros tenemos a un auténtico blog star, un twitt crack, al que muchos admiran (o eso se cree él) y siguen, y eso da una autoridad, ¿no, colega? tanta como para reírte en los muertos del vuelo JK5022.

¿Y qué tal te sentaría si yo me cagara en xxx xxxxxxx?

Keep going and you see the Need For Speed franchise slowly devolve in quality and vision, but some other games come along that keep adding to that paradigm: Burnout adds traffic and an almost perverse use of crashing as a key game element.  Well, wait a second.  I mistakenly said games, as in the plural.

Aside from quality games that refine track racing or off road racing, put you on a bike or in a go-kart, little has been added to the pure formula of racing.  That is, racing has not been made more fun by changing the way in which the player races.  There are small changes here and there that you could argue, but nothing big.  For instance Bizarre took the player out of his car, gave him a gun, and told him to go to the race track in The Club.  That was radical, but it wasn't very well received for reasons I won't get into.

Instead, we see developers saying 'OK, racing model is done, what else can we slap in here?'.  The result has been added customization of parts (with a high variability in quality, per franchise), different race culture simulation such as participating in real-life race types, games that add the arcade qualities of powerup objects or track pieces, or even weapons.  From the Need For Speed series specifically, what you get is different themes.

In fact, the newest Need For Speed trailer is what spurred this piece.  It has what seem like some pretty lofty aspirations.  You've got formulaic Hollywood characters going about their 'welcome to the world of illegal racing' spiel, but most importantly the trailer hints at something.  It hints at the idea that this theme makes the game more appealing.  Same racing, different place.

It's odd really, that for the most part the racing genre treats itself like other genres treat it.  In Grand Theft Auto the driving model is just one part of the game, and as we saw with GTA IV it's confident enough in its execution of a driving model that it supports an online racing mode that in fact is very similar to Need For Speed's recent checkpoint scheme.  It even supports helicopter racing.  Not terribly inventive of them, but surprisingly on par (or slightly above) the recent trends withing the racing genre itself.

This is something that is not the fault of teams, but it is the fault of people.  Whether it be consumers, executives, or market analysts, something it keeping these creators from being inventive.  Being inventive does not require a large team or lots of money  (I say inventive as opposed to innovative because the latter has lost its meaning in the transition from useful phrase to buzzword), and I'm not sure exactly what it requires.  Like I mentioned, the perpetrator is a mystery -- who knows what the individual pressures are to produce the same kind of racing game over and over.  All I'm sure of is that it can't be the developers, because even the ancient Death Race is more inventive than current fare.  Maybe the kind of people behind this trailer?  Who can say, but that's my best guess, and if the developers are on that boat, then the racing genre might be in a welcomed state of churn.  Who am I to argue, if they're enjoying it, right?

Entre otras causas, porque el MAS impuso el mal hábito de lanzar sus huestes a la calle cada vez que un determinado sector presenta una demanda social. Esta pésima costumbre ha sido copiada por los sindicatos, los comités autonomistas, las universidades y hasta por los minusválidos. Al entregar este artículo a la prensa, Bolivia está que arde y no puedo prever a qué extremos de violencia llegará el mal llamado “paro cívico” anunciado en las cinco regiones autoproclamadas autonómicas. Ya no es el Congreso en donde los representantes nacionales debaten las más importantes decisiones del país, sino es la calle, de donde parten las presiones que fuerzan a las autoridades, incluso con la violencia, a satisfacer exigencias no siempre acordes con el bien común.

Un hecho imprevisto por los gobernantes de los últimos años es que los referendos, que se tenían como un medio de participación popular, pacífico y beneficioso para el país, han servido de pretexto para graves enfrentamientos o han sido perniciosos para la nación. Así ocurrió en el 2004, gobernando Carlos Mesa, cuando se decidió la política energética por medio de un referéndum. ¿Recuerda el amable lector aquella frase que movió más patrioterismo visceral que fructíferas relaciones de buena vecindad? “¡Ni una molécula de gas para Chile!”. Gracias a tan descabellada exhortación, Bolivia perdió la oportunidad de vender más gas a otros países. En el 2006, otro referéndum decidió que cinco departamentos optaran por la autonomía y los otros cuatro por el centralismo. Hace una semana se llevó a cabo el referéndum revocatorio, que ponía en la ruleta la permanencia o destitución del Presidente y del Vicepresidente, así como de los prefectos. El resultado de esta última consulta, contando con el fraude, la clonación de documentos de identidad y con el voto de comunidades campesinas obligadas a obedecer la consigna del cacique masista, aunque los veedores de la OEA no se enteraran, fue interpretado por el presidente Evo Morales como una confirmación de que lo apoya la mayoría del país y, con ello, está en condiciones de gobernar sin necesidad del Parlamento ni de un Tribunal Constitucional que dictamine qué decisiones están acordes con la Carta Magna y cuáles no.

Este método de una supuesta democracia directa que se expresa a través de medidas de presión suele terminar en hechos de violencia y su consiguiente e implacable represión. El motín de los discapacitados en Santa Cruz, el 15 de este mes, fue una de tantas consecuencias de anteponer la presión social a la negociación ordenada en los hemiciclos del Congreso. Es también una de las recientes pruebas de la improcedencia de la “referenditis” que le hurta al Congreso su categoría de legislador supremo. Pero como las instituciones democráticas incomodan a Morales, él prefiere utilizar la calle para ejercer presión y convalidar, con un referéndum tras otro, las exigencias de sus organizaciones sociales antes que consolidar el Parlamento y las instancias judiciales. Y ya están anunciados los referendos sobre la inviable Constitución de La Glorieta y la de Tierra y Territorio. ¡La que se va a armar…!

Every presidential election brings us a new code word from the DNC that gets swallowed and regurgitated by the mainstream media and political pundits to the point that I must go on an antiemetic intravenous drip until after the election.  In 2000 we got gravitas, which was a codeword to indicate that Bush was a lightweight.  It just miraculously spread everywhere overnight like some insidious DNC kudzu.  In 2004 we got swiftboating, which came to mean a dirty attack.  Now in 2008, we get the word nuance, which means you're stupid for not getting Obama's highly intellectual positions and position adjustments.

In case you are confused about the meaning of nuance, here it is used in a paragraph at Slate.com:

The answer is that the majority of American voters is pretty stupid and uneducated. When Obama talks, he describes nuance, and complexities that the average American doesn't understand. With belief in evolution, the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, and an apocalypse hovering at 50%, the American voter cannot possibly understand Obama when he discusses complex issues like the wars in the Middle East.

I'm one of those stupic Americans. I didn't really catch on to the whole 'nuance' thing until after Saddleback. Searching with the terms Obama, Saddleback and nuance found 6000 results.  Here's an example from The Washington Post, tossing Obama's difficulties onto the viewers:

That kind of nuance is hard to understand sometimes -- it's unclear, complicated. Obama's world can be scarier. It's multicultural. It's realistic...It's honest. When does life begin? Only the antiabortionists are clear on that. For the majority of Americans...it is "above my pay grade," in Obama's words, where there is no hard and fast line to draw on what's worth dying for, and where people of all faiths have to be respected.

When you search with just Obama and nuance, you get over 500,000 hits.  To be sure, when you search with McCain and nuance, you get 377,000 hits, but most of those are talking about Obama's nuance, not McCain's.  Or when it does refer to McCain, it's not in a good way, as in this example from Time:

I just don't see how McCain is offering one iota more nuance then Bush has for the last five years. Why would this appeal to voters in November?

Poor stupid John and his merry band of ignoramus supporters.  We just don't get the subtleties of Obama's flip-flops, appeasement policies, wealth redistribution plans, and energy stifling programs.  If only we could think more clearly, like the Democrats, we could truly appreciate the brilliance behind the Obama nuances.

The worst part of all this is that these Democratic keywords don't die easily.   The media won't let them.  Democrats will now and for a good long while be known as the nuanced party.  Republicans, meanwhile, will be noted for their cavemanesque clarity.

If I could get a Republican codeword spread to the media, I guess it would have to be asshole.  I don't know.  There are so many, but I think asshole describes it pretty well.  Oops, that wasn't very nuanced.  On the other hand, you do know how I feel.  Isn't that the goal of communication, to transfer thought from one person to another while maintaining the message integrity?  Sometimes it's more intelligent to say 'asshole' than it is to say 'fundament', and yet that's not really what Obama is doing, though that's what the Dems would have you believe.  The reality is that nuance is a codeword for babbling nonsense and backtracking.  Don't let them tell you any different.

Acontecimiento que, aunque no muy usual en la agenda de una institución como el Parlamento del Sur que, entre otras misiones, tiene la de velar por que los países miembros del mercado regional cuenten con sistemas democráticos que cumplan con la constitución y las leyes y respeten los derechos humanos, pudo pasar como una reunión de rutina más, como otra de aquellas en que un grupo de ciudadanos de los socios con membresía plena concurren civilizadamente a querellarse con sus gobiernos.

Y ello por una razón muy sencilla: durante aproximadamente 20 años, o sea, entre el período que va de mediados de los 60, a mediados de los 80, los países representados en el MERCOSUR y el Parlasur, conocieron algunas de las dictaduras militares más aterradoras de que tenga memoria la humanidad, una colección de satrapías que dio al traste con los gobiernos democráticos que intentaban constituirse en la región y a punta de fusilamientos, torturas, cárceles y desapariciones forzosas llevaron a cabo un tenebroso genocidio que aun pesa en el estado mental y físico de quienes lo vivieron, conocieron y sufrieron.

De modo que si hay una comunidad en el mundo que sabe de gritos, violencia, ejércitos, fusiles, atropellos, de no dejar hablar al otro y de hacer sentir el peso del poder para que no se conozcan las ruindades del militarismo y sus dictadores, esos son los funcionarios y ciudadanos de los países del MERCOSUR, sin duda que espantados cuando un grupo de parlamentarios chavistas enviados apresuradamente a Montevideo para impedir que López y Molina dijeran su verdad, se constituyeron en demostración de lo que sucede cuando los omnipotentes, cuando los hombres de estado, tratan de aplastar a los diferentes, a los opositores que no se arrodillan ante sus abusos y dictados.

Los diputados gobierneros, Desireé Santos Amaral, Calixto y Saúl Ortega y Carlos Escarrá, en efecto, estaban ahí para eso, para hacer callar a López y Molina, para emplear la violencia verbal primero y la violencia física después de de ser necesaria, con tal que no se conociera un atropello a los derechos humanos, una violación de la constitución y las leyes venezolanas, como es que a Leopoldo López y otros 300 venezolanos se les ha inhabilitado para ejercer el derecho a ser elegidos en las elecciones a celebrarse el 23 de noviembre próximo.

Y como la denuncia, de ser cierta, no permitiría a Chávez y su gobierno ser miembros plenos del MERCOSUR, pues está en contravención de la Carta Democrática del acuerdo que es el Protocolo de Ushuaia, entonces, ningún otro argumento que los gritos y la amenaza de los puños para que tratara de evitarse, de acallarse, de aplastarse, como en otros tiempos las bayonetas y los fusiles acallaron y aplastaron a miles de uruguayos, argentinos, paraguayos y brasileros.

O sea, que Santos, Calixto y Saúl Ortega y Escarrá, se estaban denunciando a sí mismos, se estaban poniendo en el banquillo de los acusados y en espera de una sentencia que sin duda vendrá, si no de los gobiernos y funcionarios de este MERCOSUR y de este Parlasur, sí del que está constituido en las calles, en los barrios y urbanizaciones, en campos y ciudades, en universidades y fábricas y cuyo veredicto no puede ser otro: CHÁVEZ CULPABLE.

Fay is behaving badly, but not unexpectedly. I told you several days ago that I

figured that the legacy would be heavy rain and that is bearing out.  I had thought though that it would be about 75 to 100 miles farther north, and that may still bear out.  It slowed so much over the peninsula that while it was dawdling, the ridge was building in.  Now, it will start to be influenced from the ridge in a place farther south than the previous official forecast.  While the official track takes it slowly across north Florida and to the northwest, it is not totally out of the question for the storm to move west and re-emerge over the Gulf of Mexico before swinging back to the west-northwest and northwest.  It still has a pretty good looking structure on satellite and pressures started dropping and winds increasing the second it got offshoe, but the official forecast is for it to run out of time and stay below the hurricane threshold before moving back ashore.  While the general scenario is becoming relatively clear and it will continue to be a big rain maker with winds having a marginal effect except for the occasional tornado, the exact track over the next 48 hours is still beyond the ability of mankind.  You can tell the level of uncertainty in that the "cone" is actually a giant circle on the official forecast track. Here is the discussion from the boys at the Melbourne office of the NWS.  Hydrometeorological models indicate that 30 inches of rain could fall in some areas.  The map above is the late afternoon storm totals of the region.  Some areas northwest of Melbourne have received over 24" of rain and Melbourne had officially received over 16".

Tropical Disburbance 94L:  It is important to note that the National Hurricane Center is not showing

much enthusiasm for this feature at this time, making statements that slow development is possible. The Spaghetti models above continue to indicate a motion taking it north of the islands.  However, it is interesting to note that the spaghetti model intensity graphs continues to show some models wanting to take it to hurricane status, with a few even to category II.  It will be interesting to see how this guy develops.

Lo curioso de este tipo de redes sociales (sobretodo en aquellas en las que existen imágenes), es el hecho de que casi siempre observamos a ciertos sujetos, que conocemos en persona y del que tenemos la certeza de que menos sociable podía ser etiquetad@ de cualquier otra forma, observamos que sin embargo cuando entramos en su "espacio" en cuestión, dudamos de si realmente estábamos equivocados, pues nos encontramos con otro tipo de sujeto completamente reformado y diferente del que conocíamos, pues además de aparentar poseer más amigos de los imaginables, en todas las fotos y comentarios se muestra tan sumamente sociable que creemos haber conocido a su hermano malo.

Lo cierto es que casi tod@s, tendemos a mostrar nuestro lado más positivo y amigable que de costumbre, quizá motivados por el deseo de ser visto como seres completamente adaptados a su medio, o quizás por la necesidad de aprobación que necesitamos obtener de los demás.

De manera que las redes sociales, fomentan la sociabilidad e incitan a mostrar nuestra cara más feliz y positiva, a veces concordante con la realidad y otras un mero espejo temporal irreal.

Pero cuidado, que las redes sociales enganchan al principio, pero al cabo del tiempo aburren hasta la saciedad.

Anoche terminé de leer Juan Salvador Gaviota (Johnathan Leavingstone Seagull) por Richard Bach y con estas palabras resumo:

Una fábula que narra el aprendizaje de una gaviota determinada a ser libre y a volar con pasión, a pesar de la desaprobación de la bandada en la que se crió. Luego de ser exiliado, Juan, la gaviota protagonista, descubre qué es la libertad y perfecciona sus habilidades de vuelo junto a otras gaviotas que comparten su afición, para luego retornar a su punto de origen e intentar compartir su nuevo conocimiento.

La historia por sí sola es poco interesante. Es el significado detrás de ella que interesa.

Al terminar el libro concluí que debería ser una lectura obligatoria en el bachillerato dominicano. El mensaje que desdobla no podría ser más apropiado. El punto focal es el rechazo al conformismo y a la mediocridad. Es como una invitación a asumir el reto del auto-perfeccionismo, a desear ser más. Es una motivación a retornar a nuestro punto de partida y a compartir con los que nunca se fueron lo mejor que ahora tenemos.

Con esa última parte me sentí profundamente identificada, debido al país en el que vivo. Los que me rodean solo saben hablar de lo mucho que desean alejarse de donde viven para no volver. Pero ignorar el problema no lo hace desaparecer. Y es una lástima que esta realidad sea tan invisible para los jóvenes profesionales dominicanos.

Creo que esta tareita que me he puesto ha salido mucho más productiva de lo que imaginé.

Los medios de comunicación internacional nos traen la grata noticia de que el dictador africano Robert Mugabe, que ha sometido al pueblo de Zimbawe, desde su fundación en 1980, a un Gobierno autoritario, atrabiliario y despótico, donde no se respetan los derechos humanos y existe una farsa democrática, ha recapacitado felizmente a favor de la democracia y ha tenido un gesto de grandeza, patriotismo y sentimiento con su sufrido país.

Esto fue posible gracias a la intervención del presidente Thabo Mbeki, de la República de Sudáfrica, que ha mediado y logrado sentar a la mesa de negociaciones a las dos partes para que firmen un acuerdo con el líder de la oposición del Movimiento por el Cambio Democrático, Morgan Tsvangirai, a fin de terminar con la crisis política y abrir un camino de diálogo para restablecer la democracia en aquel Estado africano.
El régimen de Mugabe se ha caracterizado por la persecución permanente y hostil a los granjeros blancos; muchos han sido asesinados y la comunidad internacional se niega a apoyar una reforma agraria mientras persista la ola de violencia reinante en el país.
Naciones Unidas, la Unión Europea y Estados Unidos lo han criticado, lo han censurado y le han retirado todo su apoyo por mantener un régimen dictatorial, sin respeto a la vida humana, donde la muerte ha sido el arma para afrontar a la oposición política.
Esperemos que tal actitud sea sincera, franca y honesta para que devuelva a ese sufrido pueblo del continente negro la posibilidad de una reconciliación nacional, en el que desaparezca el odio, la venganza y la revancha, que han sido moneda corriente en la vida del pueblo de Zimbawe en los últimos tiempos.
Los gobiernos populistas de América Latina que tienen a sus naciones en estado de confrontación, beligerancia y permanente cuestionamiento deben aprender de Robert Mugabe, pues no se puede mantener a un pueblo en un eterno vía crucis, con incertidumbre e indecisión, teniendo en cuenta que lo único que se ve en el horizonte es la guerra, la muerte y la destrucción de los países.
Es hora de pensar que ese camino es equivocado, que los llevará al desastre y la bancarrota, y hacer conciencia de que se debe salvar a las naciones de la hecatombe, la destrucción y el fracaso.
La lógica, el sentido común y el buen criterio señalan que se deben apartar la soberbia, la maldad y el garrote para sentarse como hermanos en una mesa a discutir, analizar y buscar el entendimiento, la concordia, la armonía y la paz.
Aún es hora de no dejar pasar el tiempo y que la tormenta arrase, porque la muerte ha invadido el escenario y cuando se está en sus garras, ya no se puede hacer nada.
Que Dios ilumine a los hombres que tienen la responsabilidad de asumir actitudes serias, dignas y responsables para que la historia sea benévola cuando les toque juzgarlos
