The difference between promoting an English website and some less spoken language website is huge. L

The difference between promoting an English website and some less spoken language website is huge. Let's call thees other websites regional sites. It is much easier to promote an non English website. Let's take Croatian language for example. The market is so undeveloped that with good on-site optimization and virtually no backlinks towards the article you can take the google-s first positions for even most targeted keywords. I have a number one spot for word "pornografija" witch means "pornography" in Croatian on an technology blog with no backlinks toward that article.

When and why should you try going in to regional markets?

You should do it when your budget is tight. It is easy to get number one spots in google on regional markets (compared to English websites) so you don't need to spend lots of money.

You should do it when you've got something they don't. You will often find some good and useful services online in English language. Some of thees don't exist in most of the regional markets. You can try and create clones in other languages. Most of thees cool new web 2.0 services are community and UGC based so you don't even have to speak targeted language once you setup the startup in it.

You should always try to expand your business on other countries and markets in their native language. Even if you are a small startup. All the big guys do it (Coca cola, Google etc.). If you are a small company it will probably be vary hard to get number one listings in google for your targeted keywords. If you try regional markets, they wont give you as many visitors as number one position on google.com would but they would give you SOME visitors and you might earn SOME money while being listed on 500th page of google.com won't give you any.

When Robert and I had Matthew Vernhout from Email Karma (www.emailkarma.net) on the BusinessCast, we

When Robert and I had Matthew Vernhout from Email Karma (www.emailkarma.net) on the BusinessCast, we tackled the very "hot" topic of Email Marketing for Entrepreneurs.

We wanted to better understand how email can help entrepreneurs establish and build strong business relationships online.

With Matt's help, we unearthed some of the key issues and misperceptions about email and email marketing. Moreover, we got a handle on just how complex effective email marketing can be along with plenty of practical tips and advice from an email marketing guru.

So, here are a handful of some critical lessons in a Q&A format:

Q: Why should an entrepreneur consider/use email as part of their marketing efforts?

A: Email, when developed and delivered responsibly, is:

Efficient (i.e. it can deliver marketing results)

Cost-effective

Immediate

Measurable

Easy to use

Q: What are some of the critical issues that entrepreneurs should be aware of so that they can hone their email marketing efforts?

A: Entrepreneurs need to address ways of:

Ensuring email actually lands in the intended email box

Building and sustaining a database of people who look forward to receiving email

Setting and maintaining a deployment schedule that provides the best results

Periodically testing elements of email to achieve the best results

Q: What are some of the greatest misperceptions about email marketing that can potentially damage an entrepreneur's relationship building efforts?

A: Just because you send out email, you can not assume that your email:

Always gets delivered to the email boxes you are targeting

Always arrives when you need it to arrive

Recipients see the email the way you designed it

Recipients will always actively engage with your email

Matthew strongly recommends using the services of responsible email marketing services - which allow you to delegate the tasks of developing and delivering email to companies that can do it most cost-effectively. Find a list of email marketing services (organized by county) at a useful resource developed by the email marketer's club.

In the next few weeks, we're going to have Matt back in the BusinessCast bagel shop and we're going to run through a very practical 'soup to nuts' scenario - whereby we cover the main points of an effective campaign in case-study format. So, if you're planning an email marketing campaign, looking to hone your existing campaign or if you've been looking for an excuse to launch your first campaign, let us know. We could use your campaign as the focus for our discussion.

Online Marketing Priorities in a Web 2.0 World: New How-To Series

Web 2.0 has changed the techniques and rules of marketing forever. The definitions of Web 2.0 vary,

Web 2.0 has changed the techniques and rules of marketing forever. The definitions of Web 2.0 vary, but all agree the shift is seismic. Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, is widely credited for establishing the term "Web 2.0." As he puts it, "Web 2.0 is a business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."

To get a glimpse of these big changes, watch this short but charming video.

Social Media in Plain English video by Common Craft

As a result of all this interactivity and personalization, businesses have new communications techniques and new ways to work with customers.

What Marketing Techniques Have the Biggest Paybacks Now?

Because of new capabilities that social media provides, there are many new ways to market. "When did online marketing become so complex?" asks Anita Campbell of Small Business Trends. "How shall I prioritize my activities?" Anita recognizes the frustration all of us feel trying to make sense of new alternatives, and she's got answers. Here's her graphic to portray how to focus your online marketing activities for the best return:

[caption id="attachment_386" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Online Marketing ROI"][/caption]

Center, Inner and Outer Priorities

The center of your marketing plan should be your website, she says. It's the bullseye of her circle. In the smaller, inner circle are five more marketing activities with high payoff: email marketing, blogging, online press releases, pay-per-click ads, and search engine optimization (SEO.) The rest of these new marketing outlets form the outer ring.

Why Are New Marketing Approaches So Important?

Because you can reach more people with new methods, and target them better. The bottom line: You should adopt new techniques because they are powerful and cheap.

To introduce and explain the many new Web 2.0 marketing techniques, I've decided to do a how-to series of blog posts. Each post will have this format:

What is this technique?
What does this look like?
Get started videos and links
Vendor sites, if relevant
More info

Come back for introductory posts on each of Anita's online marketing alternatives. Or sign up to receive posts for free by email or in a reader. I promise lots of videos, easy learning and links to take you deeper into this brave new world.

How many times have you just clicked the first result you see, when you have searched for something on Google?

What's that? You never go past page 3...

Fear not. No one gets past page 3. This doesn't mean your lazy and cant be bothered to look any further, this is just typical online behaviour.People don't want to search too much, they are too busy plus why the hell should they? People want their results and they want it now, most importantly they KNOW Google will give it to them.

To be the number one spot on Google is to essentially win at life. It stands for that illusive integrity in a fast paced world of instant gratification. Online users know that the reults Google presents are THE most relevant to their search and that's why they go to it.

But how do you get to be there?

You may have just started to get involved with online media or maybe you already have a website or a blog and want to be able to be found more for your content. You may just want to show off to the world or you have realised the importance of the power of online marketing. Well you're in good hands as we at Green i Design know how to be found.

Unfortuneately it's no simple task and getting good rankings in the Google Search Engine can be a full time job, no, there is no easy route and you have to be prepared for the long hall. Any sneaky short cuts, Google's search bots will find them and you will be punished...

Like Wikipedia, Google is built on trust and of course, some rather complicated techo jargon. From the huge airhangers that house the Big G's hubs, processing over 100 search factors and the relevance of over 8 billion web pages in a matter of seconds, for your convenience. To the secret Google algorithm that works out exactly what you are looking for, with over 90% of search results online found by Google, there really is no substitute.

So to be found on Google?

HOW TO BE FOUND ON GOOGLE: TIP no. 1

Well as we have mentioned there are loads of factors (over 100) Google consider when making a search, some we* know, some only Google know, but the first and most important factor to get found on Google is to write good content. Matt Cutts (aka the public face / 'man who is super smug becuase he actually does know everything about') of Google.com, says good content is his first and primary factor when decifering the relevance of a web page - will it tell the reader what they wanted to know? Have you written about your topic well? with passion and commitment? Do you appeal to your customers?

More often than not, the key to a successful business is their customer satisfaction success rate - and of course Google is on it with that!

Write what you want and write with enthusiasm, write for your audience and not for the search engines and you WILL get found.

....................

If your still finding this a little complicated and you'd rather someone do the work for you, contact us at Green i Design - We can help you get your web page found.

*We = Search Engine Optimisers

Search Engine Optimisers is the posho way of saying 'the people who specialise in getting your stuff found online.'

Why did I create it? There are several reasons... One of them is my need to practice my written English as English is in fact my third language. This seams like a good point in a post where I could say something about myself. I'm a webmaster from Croatia, it's a small country in the middle of Europe. I'm also an authority blogger in Croatia blogging about web start-ups, web 2.0, new stuff online, online marketing and more.

In the future I plan to post some cool posts about online marketing so stay tuned if you want some wisdom for free :)

One of my biggest pet peeves is going to a website, which contains minimal contact information.

The internet is too vital a place to neglect this important information, as virtually all people use some aspect of the internet to communicate with others. It’s crucial to give customers options for contacting your company.

Customers love options because it allows them to choose the most convenient way for them to contact your company. Many people use e-mail everyday, and it might be easier for them to send your company an email with an inquiry, comment, or suggestion rather than picking up the phone and waiting through a recorded message and being on hold for five or ten minutes.

Items that should be on your “contact us” page:

· STAFF: I can’t tell you how many websites don’t have a list of their most important staff members listed. This is important because it adds a personal flare to your company and allows the customer to feel as though they are contacting an actual person and not just a company. People may be discouraged from contacting your company via email if they do not have a specific name or title to use.

· PHONE NUMBER: Provide a phone number for those who want questions answered immediately and who want to speak directly with a person.

· EMAIL ADDRESS: Provide an email address for general questions and staff email addresses for more specific inquiries and comments.

· MESSAGE FORM: Provide a form so that the customer can fill in questions and comments right there and not go through the trouble of creating an email. A message form should have boxes for customers to fill in their name, company name, cell or business number, email address, and their questions or comments.

· EMAIL AND MESSAGE FORM COMBO: Sounds like a meal at a fast-food place, doesn’t it? An email address and message form would add even more options for your customers to contact you.

Let's say you receive an email inquiry of a potential customer. What should you do?

The following post tells about an assignment I created as an easy-to-follow process for an Internet Sales Department in a Car Dealership. This example I used can be adapted by any industry and profession. I hope you like what you'll read:

Who is this Internet Customer?

Answering a Customer's email is the first Line of Communication, when a typical Internet Prospect connects with your business via an inquiry. These Internet Customers are known to be very meticulous, love to research and would like to find a solution by themselves, without having a "pushy" sales person telling them what to do. If I let my imagination loose for a moment, this prospect must have done most likely all the research on the net. He must have compared tens and tens of cars, hundreds of combinations on color, upholstery, mileage and so on. She must have already decided to 99 percent what he wants to purchase, and one thing is for sure. He most probably knows much more than you - The Sales Pro -, by now. After hours an hours in front of the computer screen the prospect has finally figured out what he/she is looking for and is ready for the next step in the Online Marketing Circus.

THIS IS A THREAT - Customers are connecting to you!

Now what. The email inquiry arrived and you (are may be the Sales Manager) is thinking "who should I give it to - who should take take about this prospect".

YELLOW COCONUT's advice:Please don't wait too long. Research found that Internet Inquiries and their Senders are most likely doing business with the company (>60%), who responded first in timely manner to their questions and concerns. SO GET ON IT RIGHT AWAY!

If this prospect has contacted you via email inquiry, it means that he believes you will be able to guide him on some facts that he is unable to get hold of on the Internet – like pricing and availability. Now it is your turn to convert this prospect into a buyer. Don’t miss the great opportunity to impress this client with a “Speedy Response” and the “Courtesy to answer specific his or her questions”. Set a sales person on it, who knows to use a keyboard, is open-minded for this "new" medium and is known to be persistent and eager to "wanna make a customer happy". When the prospect left a phone number with his/her email do not hesitate to use it and call the prospect up - also here, chances to welcome this customer into your showroom or office are rising, when you are the first who connects.

YELLOW COCONUT's observation:Use a LIVEWIRE EMAIL Approach - Ask yourself "what are my hot-buttons and would convince me to see Salesperson A or Salesperson B?" What you need to have in your outgoing message to your potential client is empathy, enthusiasm, the CHUTZPAH and drive to make it happen. When the client sees that there is is an email from you and compares it to the other numerous inquiry-replies from your competition - you want to stand out. Be creative, different and sincere.

Different email auto-responders for different occasions:

Make a list of all types of scenarios and for each scenario you must have an email auto-responder. Make sure that it is to the point. You are with a customer? Turn on this”auto-responder”and tell your potential customer “I am right now assisting another happy customer of mine to get into the car of his/her dreams”. Or let’s say the inquiry comes in after business hours. The auto-responder email should state “You reached us after our business hours but I’ll be with you FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, guaranteed” – careful don’t forget with the prospect right away on the next morning or you are loosing credibility.

Small Business Online Marketing WITHOUT SEO? Absolutely.

Small Business Online Marketing WITHOUT SEO? Absolutely.

OK, put the guns down and hear me out BEFORE the public execution begins over such an outrageous statement.

Here’s why SEO could be a total waste of time for a small business or home business entrepreneur, namely, you:

Unless you have invented a time machine, time is finite.

Limited.

Valuable.

All of us entrepreneurs have so many demands on our time that some days we’re pretty clueless. So in this time-poor lifestyle, why should we allocate vast time (or even financial) resources to SEO and boosting our rank on Google?

Right about now, the SEO guys here are turning red with rage and phoning up hit men.

But let’s get real.

SEO is expensive. Often very expensive.

Most small business entrepreneurs simply do not have the time or financial resources to compete with bigger businesses who have full-time consultants or firms working constantly on their SEO to bump up their Google place a notch or two.

What I propose is a marketing model quite different and one that I hope gives you back some time and money.

At heart, I’m a guerrilla marketer driven by cost-effective (including time, not just money) results-driven tactics and strategies and to be blunt, I’m too technically illiterate to appreciate a lot of the nuances of say, H1, H2 and H3 codes.

There’s a simple saying in our business: sell what is already selling.

Let’s apply this to your SEO-less online marketing.

Rather than spending months or years (time is money) on optimising everything about your page, devouring every latest SEO trick and building hundreds of quality backlinks, instead make sure that your fine-tuned marketing messages constantly appear on sites that Google ALREADY loves.

When your messages appear on some of these sites, Google will put it on Page 1 in UNDER TWENTY MINUTES.

And you have time to go out and enjoy a movie rather than buying another SEO book.

And yes, I think you MUST use a paused Adwords account to find out exact long search phrases in your niche to use as titles and content in your messages.

But that’s very different to constant SEO development of your own website/s.

If you want to find these Google-loved sites where your messages MUST appear, go to alexa dot com and check the top 100/500. Work out where you can get your messages seen ON THESE SITES and indexed rapidly and high on Google.

For example, I get incredible Page 1 Google results from a site that is in the 8,000s on Alexa - all WITHOUT a penny spent on SEO. One in the Alexa 300s is phenomenal.

Google ALREADY loves these sites and doesn’t care much for mine but I don’t care. Because my messages are on those sites! And I keep them there.

Those sites are among the biggest traffic drivers to my poorly-SEOd site. And they’re free to place messages there.

No PPC either - all free.

Don’t even get me started on Pay-Per-Click!

Now imagine if you have great marketing messages appearing on TWENTY of these Google-loved sites a day.

This will give you far more IMMEDIATE and FREE traffic than wasting years of your life on SEO-ing YOUR site to death.

Of course, you MUST have YOUR landing pages properly tested and sorted when the traffic does come from these other Google-friendly sites but you have optimised it for PEOPLE, targeted prospects, not a Google robot that changes its mind constantly about Quality Score!

See what I mean? After all, did you find this article on my website?

So there we are.

Let the vengeful fists of SEO fury come now.

Nonetheless, I hope this helps your small business journey because I know how important succeeding in it is to you.

On an unrelated matter, I came across this cool axiom from Jim Rohn today: “Your personal income rarely exceeds your personal development.”

Hard to argue with the J-Bird there.

Have a great day.

Many of our customers come to us with the initial belief that since their business is all local, the

Many of our customers come to us with the initial belief that since their business is all local, there is no need for online marketing. We know that this belief is the result of not having enough information about how the web works. Here are a few tips when considering marketing your business on the web.

Tracking

Are you tracking your current marketing efforts? Do you put advertisements in the newspaper, local magazines, radio or television? If so, how do you know those ads are working? Some businesses are very good at remembering to ask new customers where they heard about their business, however, most are not consistently tracking where their new customers are coming from. Online marketing is one effective way of tracking how a particular campaign is working.

Tracking your advertising campaigns can be done by creating a specialized website with a different domain from your normal site that is dedicated to the particular product or service that you are currently focusing on in your ads. You can create multiple mini websites or landing pages, each one aligning with one medium. For example, you are advertising a Wonder Widget and want to know which publication is giving you more bang for your buck. With publication Alpha you publish your website as www.wonderwidget.com and with publication Beta you publish www.wonderwidgetnow.com. Now you track how many hits you receive on each mini site over a given period of time. That will tell you how well your campaigns are doing.

Conversion

There is an old adage that says - a new customer will need to see your information 14 times before deciding to do business with you. There are also current statistics that say 85% of people between the ages of 16 and 65 will shop or pre-shop online. If your target market is in that age category, the web becomes a cost effective way of getting your customers to see your information frequently and compellingly. Most people do research toward new purchases online, even if they plan on going to the physical store to get the item or service.

When a potential customer is shopping for Widgets and checking online to see who carries them in their city, you want them to see your website explaining all about your widgets, where they are, how to get them, and how they will benefit from your widget versus Company B’s widget. With the right website, you can bypass the 14x rule by giving the customer, who is actively looking for widgets, the information they need in order to choose you – now.

Local people have a tendency to want to business locally. 85% of people in your local target market pre-shop online. If you’re not online with a site that can be found in a local web search, you’re missing out on more local business than you realize. If you want some straight answers on how your business can profit from local web marketing, call Suite 171 today at 701-478-5955.

Yesterday I got my issue of the Grand Rapids Business Journal and found an interesting article entitled "Web Ads Going Local". There was nothing in the article that we at ManoByte have not been saying for along time. But the article did emphasize two points that we have been saying and that are worth repeating. Quoting Charles McGrath from Structure Interactive the Grand Rapids Business Journal says..

"they need to rely on creative marketing ideas online as much as they always have in other mediums, McGrath said. “It’s the same method, new medium.”

He said he’s not sure advertising firms are doing all they can to bring clients into this brave new world, especially with pure-play companies that are experts in honing in on local ad dollars.

“In general, I think agencies are floundering. They're still thinking of the Internet as a brochure, and they’re not thinking ‘How can we take advantage of this medium,’” McGrath added. “Instead, they’re blasting the client’s message, whether it’s appropriate or not.” "

The two key points are that companies need assistance in being effective online and most agencies have not come up to speed yet.

While most agencies are “floundering” ManoByte is not. We have a process that is designed to help businesses take advantage of the Web 2.0 age. We are not a company dabbling in Online Marketing. We specialize in it!

Web sites should always be designed with your target audience in mind, not your own personal preferences. Colors have meaning. Professional designers understand the psychology of color and the use of white space to best project the image your audience wishes to see. (For example, try not to use the color red on a financial site.)

Understanding the products/services/information your target audience is searching for is paramount to designing and maintaining an effective web site. When you launch a site, you might have to make an educated guess as to what your target audience wants. After that, tools such as site statistics software and reporting from site searches tell you exactly what your visitors are looking for. Then content and marketing strategies can be adjusted accordingly.

Unless the advanced technology clearly benefits end users, do not use it on your site. If your venture capitalists or CEOs or lawyers like the site, ask if they are going to spend the thousands or millions of dollars to keep you in business. They're not.

Your target audience who will ultimately determine the success or failure of your site.

There is something remarkable about vision!

It is not always shared by others and it is never aligned with today.

Not too surprising is it?

My problem, like many creative people is that I have to make my clients and partners realise that unless they are moving forward with the visions I have today, tomorrow will be too late.

For example: some 3 years ago I came across an amazing technology developed in Japan, called QR Codes.

Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context spanning both commercial tracking applications as well as convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users. QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that a user might need information about. A user having a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phone's browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hard link or physical world hyperlinks. A user can also generate and print one's own QR Code for others to scan and use by visiting one of several free QR Code generating sites.

I immediately saw the amazing potential to be used in the press and digital marketing applications to build customer relationships, while enabling brands to deliver complex messages that could not be said on an emotional piece of advertising.

Here is the lesson about Vision.

2 years ago I approached publishers to give them the bleeding edge. This would have generated 100's of thousand of free advertising dollars by being the first one to embrace the vision and the potential.

This is upsetting, because today as I open the newspaper, there is a 4 page special report about the technology that I was demonstrating 2 years ago to publishers and partners. So I guess there is more awareness now about the technology, but it would have been amazing if one of my clients could have seen the potential and believed in my vision to be the first with interactive print.

Just imagine an advertising in a magazine that said, click here (scan me to be precise) and suddenly you are in front of the website and you can join a database or even buy the product. I call it interactive print, bringing old technology to the new world of interactivity where the advertising becomes fully engaging

So here is the crunch for you!

Vision is great but then people always say it's all about TIMING.

HOW CAN YOU TIME VISION with Today? If you do, is it still a vision or is it yesterday's action brought forward?

My philosophy as a business visionary is that Vision being a forward thinking process does not align with yesterday's actions so then, creating tomorrow's Vision will still become yesterday when you reach that day.

Your thoughts...

My syndication through BrazenCareerist has made me think a lot more about my career path. In part, my vocation (online marketing) did not even exist when I was in college.

How did I get here? And how can I help others find success in their marketing careers?

I posed the following question to my friends in the Wordpress Marketing Bloggers Network (WMBN): "What was the most important lesson that prepared you for your marketing career?" Their replies were insightful, honest, and practical. Here are 5 essential tips to help you on your way to a career in marketing.

I guess I would boil it down to two words: Don't Stop. Don't stop writing, thinking, learning, meeting people, whatever. Once you stop, you're done. Try something new or different and if it doesn't quite work, don't stop, just try it a different way. Marketing is about constantly tweaking, even when it's working.

-Rick Liebling, eyecube

As a creative guy (copywriter), it was sometimes frustrating to see the client change something that I'd worked really hard on. But then a creative director sat me down, explained that my passion was admirable, but it was their money. It's important to state the argument, but if they don't agree, it's their money.

Then, we went for a beer.

-Matt Hames, Share Marketing

There have been so many good lessons along the path of my career that it’s apparent they’ve all contributed to a collective pool of experience that has guided me in hard times, and in good.

Most importantly, I’ve learned from many individuals that I’ve had the pleasure to work with that honesty and trust are the two key values to hold close to long term success. So many times, we’re tempted to tell a client what we think they want to hear, or adjust our standards or timelines to meet their expectations and demands. In the long run, if you’re honest with yourself and your client, and trust that no matter what challenges you face you’ll emerge successful; the circumstances of your relationships won’t dictate you – you will dictate them.

Maintaining your personal and professional integrity, and trusting in your “inner voice” will serve you well in the end.

-Larry DeVincenzi, SmartBrand Blog

[Paul doesn't consider himself a marketer, but rather a journalist. However, I think his advice is still apt.]

From a journalist's point of view, my answer is:

Learn something new every day. One of my former newspaper editors gave me this advice about 6 years into my career. Up to that point I had moving up the career ladder fairly slowly and without much direction. Taking his advice made me realise how much I could learn from the people I worked with, interviewed for articles, photographers I went out on assignments with and above all my family and friends.

It is still a lesson I try hard to put into practice today. I'm comfortable knowing there are gaps in my knowledge - quite big in some cases - but the fun comes in attempting to fill them. No-one knows it all; we can all learn something.

-Paul Groves, Groves Media

And me? It's not necessarily unique to marketing, but the best lesson I learned was when someone told me: "The worst they can tell you is 'No.'"

Once you eliminate this fear of failure - or fear of things beyond failure - you can do most anything. Maybe I was anxious about people liking me or driven by ambition to succeed every single time - I don't know. But whenever I acknowledged that simple failure was the worst option, it got me thinking about every other option that wasn't failure.

What was your most important lesson? Feel free to leave your personal lesson or remark on these ones in the comments section below.

And be sure to check out all of the great content produced by these and other members of the WMBN. You can find a full list in the right-hand column.

How To Start My Own Small Business
400 Latest & Greatest Small Business Ideas From Around The World

So you want to start your own small business BUT don’t want to lose your shirt or blouse if it all screws up?

Cool. Makes sense.

So, apart from deciding to go for it, aim to apply these principles in choosing your business and you stand a very good chance of making it:

1. The small business can be operated from HOME (i.e. no giant additional rental overheads).

2. The business does NOT require a large inventory of product (another financially crippling overhead) i.e. it is service-based rather than product-based, at least to begin with.

3. The business has SEVERAL income streams (e.g. service as well as sales - look at hair salons selling high-markup products AND hair care).

4. The business involves a product/service that buyers pay for IMMEDIATELY and not on a 30-day/60-day/90-day/120-day basis (late payment of accounts has sent countless small AND large businesses to the bottom of the river without a scuba tank).

5. The business relates to your EXISTING skills/expertise (or it’s something you are prepared to develop your knowledge in very quickly) so avoid offering neurosurgery in your neighbourhood unless you spent the last 10 years cutting open people’s heads in a hospital.

6. The business has a considerable/total CASH-IN-HAND sales element.

7. The business still earns income when the owner is away (e.g. vending machines) - not necessarily vital but pretty nice.

8. The business is not too reliant on finding good staff (finding and keeping quality staff is one of the biggest issues for all small business operators).

9. The business is not based on too small a number of clients (e.g. an advertising agency with only 1 client) - this gives the client the power and not the business!

10. The business appeals to human NEEDS that demand constant fulfilment rather than occasional wants (the food retail business is far more bankable than many other service businesses e.g. people have to eat but they don’t NEED to have their tarot cards read - mind you a tarot card reading service is very cheap to set up and actually a pretty good small business model).

11. The small business has a clear point of difference from possible competitors e.g. it is faster; it is open after hours when others are closed; it comes to the client’s home; it caters to a specialized niche such as the disabled or gay or senior market; it is much simpler than existing competitors; it is in the best possible location; or it is much cheaper than obvious competitors.

Without such a characteristic, a small business will probably struggle.

12. The business is one that the owner clearly ENJOYS or has some natural affinity with e.g. a car enthusiast importing and selling used Jaguars from Britain - the new XK rocks!

Good luck and keep me posted on your small business journey!

Cost per click (CPC) is the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet pub

Cost per click (CPC) is the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet publishers for a single click on its advertisement that brings one visitor to its website.

Cost per action

Cost Per Action or CPA (sometimes known as Pay Per Action or PPA) is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action (a purchase, a form submission, and so on) linked to the advertisement.

Direct response advertisers consider CPA the optimal way to buy online advertising, as an advertiser only pays for the ad when the desired action has occurred. An action can be a product being purchased, a form being filled, etc. (The desired action to be performed is determined by the advertiser.) Google has incorporated this model into their Google AdSense [1] offering while eBay has recently announced a similar pricing called AdContext.

The CPA can be determined by different factors, depending where the online advertising inventory is being purchased.

Cost per mille

Cost per mille (CPM), also called cost ‰ and cost per thousand (CPT), is a commonly used measurement in advertising. In Latin mille means thousand, therefore, CPM means cost per thousand. Radio, television, newspaper, magazine, Out-of-home advertising and online advertising can be purchased on the basis of what it costs to show the ad to one thousand viewers (CPM). It is used in marketing as a benchmark to calculate the relative cost of an advertising campaign or an ad message in a given medium. Rather than an absolute cost, CPM estimates the cost per 1000 views of the ad.

Ad serving

Ad serving describes the technology and service that places advertisements on web sites. Ad serving technology companies provide software to web sites and advertisers to serve ads, count them, choose the ads that will make the website or advertiser most money, and monitor progress of different advertising campaigns.
