Si le entregamos nuestra vida a Dios y le reconocemos como nuestro unico Senor y Salvador, El estar alli para ayudarte con tu problema. No importa que te han dicho la gente, no importe lo que los medicos piensen que esta mal en tu vida. Dios es la solucion. La gente se admirara al ver un cambio en tu vida. Asi como esta rey al ver la presencia de Dios cuidando estas varones en el fuego. Y ellos reconoceran que Dios puede cambiar todo.

In 1825 Congress authorized the construction of a fort on Oak Island.

The fort was an outstanding engineering accomplishment. It was a pentagonal structure with a two-story citadel and surrounded by a dry moat and a wet moat. Located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, Smith Island, (Bald Head Island), and the eastern tip of Oak Island, Fort Caswell was a strategic Civil War fortification.

During World War II the fort was re-purposed into a US Naval base. America was preparing south eastern North Carolina for war. Anti-aircraft artillery and sailors swarmed to Oak Island, while civilians worked as enemy aircraft and submarine spotters patrolling the beaches and barrier islands on the lookout for German soldiers and spies.

On January 31, 1946, Fort Caswell was designated as war surplus and assigned for disposal. The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina purchased the 250 acre fort from the Government on Sept. 29, 1949 for $86,000. Fort Caswell is now the home of the North Carolina Baptist Assembly.

Today I came across this white and green porcelain thing. I have no idea what it is but would love to know. The lid comes off. It is about ten inches long and about three inches tall. It appears to be made out of porcelain and does not have any indentifying marks. There are three ladies on the top of it, a man blowing some type of horn and they appear to be in a field. The sides have little children also playing in a field. I am researching but have not had any luck. It is driving me crazy not knowing what this is. Probably some dollar cheap knock off of something, but I want to know!

There are many web sites dealing in reasons including: California Gold Rush, Oregon Trail, the Dustbowl of the 1930s, the Homestead Act of 1862, immigrating from another country in search of a better life, religious persecution, and more.  Today many people move from one locale to another due to a change in occupaton or a relocation, stationed at different spots due to military service, to get out of small towns or big cities, to go to school, and more. 

I thought I would detail some of my ancestors' migration patterns.  I don't have enough proof to document the reasons why they moved - just that they did.

Frederick Goul (5th great-grandfather)
Frederick took his wife, son, and daughter by ship (possibly the "Rawley") from Frankfort, Germany to America in the mid-1700s.  By the time they reached Philadelphia, his wife and daughter had died. 

Adam Goul (4th great-grandfather)
Adam married Elizabeth Lutz in Pennsylvania and several of their children were born there.  They moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia by 1804 and by 1817 had migrated west to Goshen Twp, Champaign County, Ohio.  Adam and Elizabeth are buried at Treacles Creek Cemetery in Champaign County.

John Goul (3rd great-grandfather)
One of Adam's and Elizabeth's sons, born about 1802, in Philadelphia, he was with his parents when they moved to Ohio.  About 1823 he married Martha McManaway.  John and his wife didn't move from Champaign County.

Malissa Goul (great-great grandmother)
Malissa met Franklin Blazer in Champaign County and they married.  The couple moved west to Madison County, Indiana before 1860 and most of their children were born there.  One son, John, and one daughter, Martha (Mat), remained in the area.  Daughter, Katie, grew up in the County and only moved in 1930 with her husband to live with their son in Greene County, Indiana.  Daughter, Rachel, moved west to Missouri and Kansas.  Son, Wesley, moved to Champaign County, Ohio where he married, brought up children and died.

My grandfather (son of Katie Blazer and John L. Johnson) was born in Anderson, Indiana and never moved away until he was in training for WWI at Ft. Omaha, Nebraska and then on to Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas.  He went to France toward the end of WWI and then returned to his wife, son and home in Anderson.  During his career in the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force), he and his family moved East to Greene County, Ohio.  This is the place they considered home for the remainder of their lives.  Yet they also moved according to the military to Wiesbaden, Germany.  My grandfather also spent some time in Washington D.C., Tullahoma, Tennessee; Finschafen, New Guinea; Orlando, Florida.  Returning to the Dayton area before 1960, he and his wife lived out the remainder of their lives in that area.

Jacob Johnson (3rd great-grandfather)
Jacob was born in New Jersey in 1787.  He moved (probably with his parents and family) by 1816 to the Southeastern section of Ohio in Brown County, Ohio.  His wife's family (Ann Shields) has also been located in that area.  By 1840 Jacob and family were living in Center Township, Rush County, Indiana, where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was born in Ohio when his parents, Jacob and Ann, lived in Brown County.  As a child he moved with them to Rush County, Indiana.  In the 1880 Census James and his second wife, Margaret Gordon, are living in Stoney Creek Twp, Madison County, Indiana.  James spent some time in Michigan in his later years living with each of his daughter's and their families.  He moved one last time - when he was buried in Little Blue River Cemetery in Rush County, Indiana.

In-laws of James Wilson Johnson, they moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina before 1838 to Rush County, Indiana.

Perhaps as I continue with my research, I will discover the reason why these people moved from one area (or country) to another.  It has just been quite interesting to see their migration patterns.

Erick had to work late, so I drove to the house with the girls and brought Celli in place of him.  He asked me why I like taking the dog whenever he's not in the car and I explained that while I'm driving, she leans back into the seat sideways and spends half her time concentrating on the road and the other half giving me kisses or puppy-dog eyes.  Who could ask for more?

On the way home, as I pulled onto Moorehead, I saw a man holding a cardboard sign on the side of the road.  In grim economic times, we see a lot of men asking for work, but this man's sign read simply, "God bless you."

I'm not religious, but it felt good to know someone believes in something enough to stand on the side of a dirty and dangerous road with such a simple message.  

I thought if I were to dedicate an afternoon to a message, my own sign would read, "You are loved."

The drumbeat is getting louder and steadier and harder to ignore for Dean, Pelosi and Brazile. The Dauphin of Democracy's Road Trip didn't turn out like they planned. (Steely Dan fans can finish that song)  They turned out the crowds alright but most Berliners can't vote (at least, not last time I checked but you never know with the Chicago crew...). And "presumptuous" doesn't even begin to describe the scene he set up in Berlin, acting like he's already president and delivering his State of the World speech on terrorism, as if Europe doesn't already have a more extensive history in fighting it. What's next for Obama? Delivering a speech on trade with China in Beijing during the Olympics next month? Has anyone told him yet that he can't have an award ceremony and listen to Hail to the Chief while the flag is raised if he doesn't actually win a gold medal in a sport? No matter. I'm sure he and David Axelrod will figure out some reasonable facsimile -- that the American public will see right through.

But back to Dean. edgeoforever reports that Dean's road trip is getting rave reviews from the PUMA set. Dean has added a new description to the growing list of endearments the DNC and friends have been using to entice us to vote for Obama. Now, we are "low class". Riiight.  I guess that's why people who choose to express their first amendment rights at the Convention in Denver deserve to be put behind a chain link fence far away from the nice, clean, cultured convention attendees.

So, in the last week, we have become "fatiguing and irritating, low-class militants". I'm having trouble conjuring up an image of that. Is it like a mullet headed Che Guevara with ADHD? And of course, we aren't Democrats. Well, this much is true, at least for me. I'm not rejoining the Democratic party officially until Dean and Brazile are gone, gone, gone. I'm a Democrat in Exile, not a Republican.

The convention is 30 days away and the pace is accelerating. We're getting attention. People are getting nervous. Their beautiful theories are getting brutally destroyed by ugly facts. The party is NOT unified just because they said so and now they in grave danger of losing face. Yes, well, what could be more embarrassing than losing a presidential election in a year when you had absolutely everything going for you? The DNC deserves a nomination for a Darwin Award for not recognizing that the old models based on gender, economics and education are no longer predictive. We are watching natural selection in action and it's not pretty.

The guard said during the chase the reporters had dropped the notebook, which he picked up. "This book has everything in it on him," he said, referring to Edwards.

Another one of Obama's friends  John Edwards has been caught in not such a good light.  I have to ask does Obama have any friends that are on the up and up with the American people?

The man boarded a ship to go from Virginia to Camden, North Carolina.  He never reached his destination and his body washed up on shore near Pasquotank County, North Carolina.  The local justices of the peace put out a warrant for his arrest and the story in the local paper about the "MURDER!" was published in over 15 papers from North Carolina to Maine.

Now here is the shocker, it turns out that the suspected murderer was cleared by the local court before he was even arrested.  Why?  It turns out that the body did not belong to the wealthy man on a trip, but instead to a destitute sailor. The sailor died at sea and his shipmates and the captain decided to throw him overboard since all were sick and lacked the strength to take him into port.

Weird stuff, eh?

This past weekend and early part of the week I kanoodled with ACC staff, some notable and not so notable (but they should be) members of the media, the muckety-mucks from all the schools and some rather sweet Georgia peaches.

The ACC definitely knows how to put together a media event and the folks at The Ritz-Carlton/Reynolds Plantation outside of Greensboro, Ga., understand how to liberally apply southern hospitality.

A quick thanks to Michael Kelly from the ACC for having a sense of humor, Tommy Bowden for recognizing who really does get the last question, his dad Bobby for the good-natured punches to the gut, Al Groh for opening up, Frank Beamer for sharing a personal moment, Allen and Tyler for all that is good about being a radio guy, Randy, Steve, Aaron and Mark for laughing your way through my golfing misadventures and Patrick whose hard work earned him a visit to his favorite restaurant Chick-fil-A.

There are about a hundred others that I had the privilege to work with, eat with, golf with and just have a good laugh with at the event. You've no idea the amount of time and energy that all of these folks put into making a football season happen. Quite impressive.

North Carolina

Judge James Spencer ruled today that Antonio Chance will not receive a pre-trial hearing on mental retardation. Chance is charged with the 2006 murder of Cynthia Moreland. Chance's IQ has tested in the mentally retarded range since he was 5 years old. Chance's trial is scheduled to begin in Wake County on the same day as another potentially mentally retarded defendant, Joseph Sanderlin.

In Haywood County, Edwardo Wong III will face the death penalty for the shooting of State Trooper David Shawn Blanton.

Elsewhere

The only doctor ever officially deemed too incompetent to participate in an execution has apparently been hired by the state of Arizona for that purpose. Dr. Alan Doerhoff supervised some 54 executions in Missouri before the state supreme court barred him from further practice. Aside from his troubles in the prison system, Doerhoff has been sued for malpractice over 20 times and banished from multiple hospitals.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has authorized the forced medication of mentally ill death row inmates to make them sane enough to be executed. It is believed to be the first decision of its kind.

In Oklahoma, Governor Brad Henry followed the recommendation of the Pardon and Parole Board and granted clemency to Kevin Young. The Board and the Governor were persuaded to mercy by members of the jury who said they would have voted differently if they'd known Young would serve life without parole.

Massive Naval Exercise Underway Off US Coast In Possible Preparation For Strike On Iran

Over 15,000 naval personnel from four countries are participating in a Joint Task Force Exercise dubbed “Operation Brimstone”, that is underway in North Carolina and off the eastern U.S. coast from Virginia to Florida. The nine day exercise began Monday and includes special forces from France, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

The large exercise comes barely a month after the Israeli air force conducted a massive exercise in the Mediterranean reportedly a rehearsal for a military strike on Iran’s nuclear sites, and also shortly after the Geneva meeting where six world powers gave Iran yet another ultimatum of two weeks to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

For the first time units of the US Navy Expeditionary Combat command who are trained to operate in shallow coastal waters similar to those off the Perisan Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz where Iranian Revolutionary Guards are stationed on islands near the strait. One cannot rule out the possibility that international forces may have to control the islands to ensure oil shipping freed passage out to world markets.

North Carolina is one of only four states which allow property to be involuntary annexed by a city without meaningful consultation with property owners. Tremendous growth in recent decades has caused the issue to become more and more contentious.  In many instances cities have involuntarily annexed high-value neighborhoods in order to boost municipal revenues. Research shows tax increases ranging from 60 percent to more than 100 percent for properties brought into municipalities through involuntary annexation.  Current law provides citizens with very limited recourse when their land and homes are about to be involuntarily annexed.  Homeowners are relegated to speaking before a city or town council made up of members not answerable to them.

Republicans in the General Assembly are determined to fight to protect private property rights including reform of North Carolina’s annexation laws and enacting protections when local governments seek to take private property through the use of Eminent Domain.  Annexation is a taxing issue and Eminent Domain is a takings issue.  Both need reform to protect the property rights of our fellow citizens.

Headlines
In Novato, California, clean up has begun on a sewage spill that came out of a manhole and went into a storm drain that empties into Novato Creek. A grease blockage caused the sewer backup.

Wichita Water Department workers worked into the night repairing three water main breaks that were impeding traffic and disrupting service to several homes.

Many residents in the Heights section of Houston were without water after a water main break. The water main break created a sinkhole that was nearly 10 feet deep, that a garbage truck struck, rupturing the truck's oil pan and spilling oil all over the road.

In North Carolina, the North Coast Regional Water Board has fined the Fort Bragg Municipal Improvement District for "discharges of partially treated and untreated wastewater from its sanitary sewer system."
