Native American Flutes have been part of Indigenous cultures for a long time. The beautiful sound of a Native flute is easily recognizable as a key instrument of peace and tranquility and is often used for meditation and spiritual purposes.

Not only is the music of a flute very pleasurable to listen to, it is also a very easy instrument to play. The simplicity of Native American flutes makes them a wonderful instrument for learning by both older and younger people, and is a great way to enjoy native culture through music.

Learning to play Native American flutes takes you on a journey of serenity through Indigenous culture where values and beliefs meld together to create beautiful harmony.

Welcome to the Detholz! Mp3 Blog, Episode XXXVII!

Before we begin this week, my sincere apologies to regular readers for my truancy from the blog last week and the tardiness of this week's posting. The writer's block I wrote about in the last post persisted -- and worsened -- to the point where I was:

a. questioning my own sanity

b. seriously doubting my abilities

and

c. experiencing an extreme case of the Doldrums

In short, due to my gimpiness (gimpitude? Gimpity?) I had nothing of value to offer you last week.

A related note: I've added an RSS feed in the sidebar, so if you're one of those futuristic types that subscribes to RSS feeds, you can now click on the link and never have to bother checking back here again. Do so every so often, though, just so I don't get lonely floating out here in the blogosphere. You feeders don't register in my stats engine.

Anyway, now that that unpleasantness is out of the way, on with the show, I say, on with the show!

This week, a tour through one of the world's greatest hearts of darkness:

LOST WEEKEND #5

I literally half-finished over 11 songs before completing "Lost Weekend #5." ALL of them are terrible-- and this one may be, too. Initial reactions from the band are positive, but... I haven't made up my mind about "Lost Weekend" yet.

1. SONG CONCEPT

After stumbling across a stunning piece of kitsch on YouTube, I knew what the subject of my next song would be: the founder of the Church of Satan, Anton Szandor LaVey. The YouTube piece is a documentary divided into 10 parts called "Speak of the Devil." HIGHLY recommended viewing:

SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

A large portion of the second section can be skipped -- it's a long clip of LaVey's first television appearance on a 60's children's show called "Brother Buzz" that seems to revolve around a pair of bumblebee puppets. On second thought, don't skip it. It's amazing! The clip centers on LaVey's pet lion, Togare, which he was eventually forced to donate to the San Francisco zoo by jittery neighbors.

There is so much rich material in "Speak of the Devil," I almost don't know where to start.

LaVey makes extraordinary claims about himself and his past. He is articulate, funny and obviously a world-class nerd, waxing on and on about Johnson-Smith gag catalogs he would read as a child (and apparently kept under his pillow as an adult), his years as a crime scene photographer for the SFPD in the 50's, or-- my personal favorite -- his mannequin collection in the "Den of Iniquity," presumably the den in the famous Black House in San Francisco. He literally built his friends, citing his growing misanthropy.

It was a form of ultra-realistic sculpture -- he would deliberately sculpt the faces of the mannequins to be ugly or distorted and his collection included prostitutes and shady-looking men. Lavey would sit and talk to them, preferring their company to that of "real" people. In the film, he seems a tad embarrassed by his creations, citing others who were more adept at ultra-realistic sculpture than he.

LaVey was also a pedigreed theater organist, so there are long clips of him playing his collection of home organs and talking about his years playing calliope in the Clyde Beatty circus after he ran away from home at the age of 17. Or so he claims. He's a great player and made a few records in his day, most notably "Satan Takes a Holiday," a collection of songs from his repertoire as a burlesque organist.

The documentary piqued my interest about LaVey -- an apparent 60's B-list crank whose story, of course, I found irresistable. In my further research, I ran across www.churchofsatan.org (as opposed to the official website of the Church of Satan, www.churchofsatan.com). It is apparently maintained by a splinter group of disgruntled satanists -- including LaVey's own daughter. There is a fascinating page about the "legends" vs. the "realities" about Anton LaVey that I found illuminating.

If you're interested, the page is here: http://www.churchofsatan.org/lavey.html

If not, I'll list a few that pertain to the song:

1. He claimed to have had an affair with Hollywood starlet Jayne Mansfield. According to churchofsatan.org, her agent set up a meeting between them, using LaVey as a foil for a cheap publicity stunt. LaVey was captivated by the actress but she spurned his advances and thought him "laughable." To further humiliate him, she would call him at home to taunt him while his followers listened in.

2. He claimed to be a close friend of singer Sammy Davis, Jr., who was awarded an honorary membership into the Church of Satan. According to churchofsatan.org, LaVey was not present when Davis accepted the membership and didn't meet him until years later.

3. He claimed to be the official "city organist" of San Francisco, hired to perform at gala events and political meetings. According to churchofsatan.org, the very idea of a "city organist" is absurd, and LaVey's only income before beginning the Church of Satan was as a house Wurlitzer organist at a club called the "Lost Weekend." (Perhaps the greatest name for a burlesque nightclub imaginable. Reminds me of the "Cafe Remember" in the heart of Amsterdam's Red Light district.)

4. He claimed to be a devoted family man, but according to his own children, was an angry, abusive father and husband.

Bear in mind that this website seems to have been set up by people who have somehow run afoul of the official Church of Satan or harbor some sort of grudge, so... when it comes to satanists, people who pledge allegiance to the biblical Father of Lies, it's tough to know who to believe.

I made a conscious effort to resist the temptation (so to speak) to include a lot of spiritual or religious imagery in this song. My fascination with LaVey's story has nothing to do with satanism, which seems to be some sort of juvenile bastardization of the philosophy of Ayn Rand with a little occult spice thrown in for shock value. (No offense meant to any practicing satanists who may have stumbled across this blog -- hey, it's a free country. I'm big into role-playing games myself!)

LaVey strikes me as a person with a powerful inferiority complex -- a desperate and clinging need for attention that drove him to ridiculous extremes (like founding an "eeevil!" religion). "His own worst enemy," if you believe his family's accounts, he was enormously dissatisfied and unhappy. As a result, he became the consummate showman, a silver-tongued pitchman, and cloaked himself in dime-store myths and comic-book fantasies, driven by his rage and insecurity.

In one sense, I guess you could say his devils made him do it!

2. SONG COMPOSITION

This one took two solid days of tweaking to get right -- and I'm still not sure everything about it IS right.

I knew two things as I sat down: as an homage to Anton, I wanted to construct the song's elements from a palette of 60's home organ tones. I also wanted to use a bossa rhythm, like one you might find on a Wurlitzer back in the day.

I actually own a Wurlitzer home organ that I pillaged from an organ store that was closing its doors but it resides at the band house, so I had to settle for VST organs. Thankfully Native Instruments' Kontakt 3 VST sampler comes with an excellent repository of vintage organ tones. When recording using VST, I've discovered it helps never to take a preset sample at face value. It really helps to know something about the instrument being emulated.

I tweaked the organs' EQ's quite a bit, downsampled them to mono, and ran them through another excellent Native Instruments VST program, Guitar Rig. While this VST is designed to emulate different amps and guitar rackmounts, I use it for its spring reverb which is the closest I've heard to the real thing in digi-world. Guitar Rig is useful for more instruments than just guitars!

A geeky side note: as I've said before, I recently switched from an ancient version of Emagic's Logic Audio Platinum to Steinberg's Nuendo as my primary DAW software (that's Digital Audio Workstation for those who may not know). While I miss certain aspects of Logic -- especially in the mixing window -- Nuendo is FAR more intuitive and easy to use. I much prefer how it handles MIDI information to Digidesign's ProTools and would strongly recommend it - even if you're just starting out. ESPECIALLY if you're just starting out.

The vocals on "Lost Weekend" were by far the most difficult elements of the song to get right. I ended up doing so many takes, I was hoarse by the end of the session (which you can hear if you listen closely). Initially, I did a few really aggressive "Detholz-ian" takes where I belted out the lyrics at full throttle, "TT Peterbilt Semi"-style (see previous post).

As I listened back, however, it became clear what this song needed was a soft, almost deadpan delivery which is what ended up on the recording. I concentrated mainly on getting the pitches right -- this song is a real beast to sing -- and doubled the verses. There's a three-part harmony on the choruses (the words "baby believer") that was originally different. The high part descended on its last note, which is much more consonant. I thought it sounded too "stock" (to quote from Lars Ulrich in "Some Kind of Monster"), so I tried ascending instead and -- voila! Much creepier and more interesting, IMHO.

This is a call from the ether of blogdom: PLEASE comment on this song and let me know what you think.!It's one of those numbers that floats in the Twilight Zone for me -- not bad, but ot great, either. To quote from the book of Revelation, "because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth."

Should this song be spewed as the spawn of Satan? Or not?

Tune in next week for the stunning conclusion!

3. LYRICS

LOST WEEKEND #5

Sit in the den and build a friend
Home for the weekend
From the Weekend

A bawdy house brought down again
By your organs
Wurlitzer organs

Deep in the house,
Beyond the black paint,
Mannequin men and whores:

You're alone in the dark
Talking to devils inside of your heart:
An infant inside -
You're a baby believer

On a Fantasy ride
Cannot believe what you cannot devise
The carnival cries
For the baby believer

A psycho drama with a Drama Queen:
Miss Mansfield is a mine field
Use Sammy Davis as a go-between?
Mediocre kind of feeling

Tomorrow night, another bawdy beguine
At the Weekend
The Lost Weekend

Lack-of-attention family man
Slug the wife as hard as you can
Run down the hall and talk to your dolls
Another weekend lost
Weekend lost

Alone in the dark
Talking to devils inside of your heart:
An infant inside -
You're a baby believer

On a Fantasy ride
Cannot believe what you cannot devise
The carnival cries
For the baby believer

Contemporary Classic
FM8 delivers unsurpassed depth, brilliance, and dynamism -
perfect when it comes to crystalline sounds for melody and
percussion.
Native Instruments has harnessed the power of FM synthesis.
The strengths of digital are manifest in FM8s powerful
audio engine which generates breath-taking, brilliantly
dynamic FM sound in pristine quality. Picking up where its
award winning predecessor, the FM7, left off, the FM8 takes
FM synthesis to a new level. With its emphasis on
ease-of-use, the FM8 brings a high degree of simplicity to
the otherwise intricate process of FM synthesis.

Synthesis From The Start
A central aspect of FM8 is usability. The Easy Edit Page
offers a clearly designed interface with simple controls
that adjust more complex parameters automatically, allowing
you to take a far more musical approach to FM synthesis.
The more detailed editing pages have been improved for
easier handling and are all accessible with just one click.
FM8 lets you play straight away!

Beyond Frequency Modulation
The FM8 offers an unprecedented range of features and
effects. The classic crystalline bells and keys are perfect
for creating melodic and percussive sounds of the highest
quality. A unique arpeggiator, a revolutionary sound
morphing feature and a large selection of new, charismatic
effects add countless sound-shaping possibilities. The
sonic potential of FM8 goes well beyond the confines of
conventional FM synthesis.

Instilled With Inspiration
Included with FM8 are over 960 ready-to-play factory
sounds. Rich and detailed, these presets exemplify the
strengths of FM synthesis, from dynamic digital pianos to
bright, bold brass. Also included are a number of effect
rack, sound morphing and arpeggio presets. The integrated
KoreSound Browser makes managing the KORE-configured
presets fast and easy. Simply search and you will find -
instantly.

FM8 delivers unsurpassed depth, brilliance, and dynamism - perfect when it comes to crystalline sounds for melody and percussion.
Native Instruments has harnessed the power of FM synthesis. The strengths of digital are manifest in FM8’s powerful audio engine which generates breath-taking, brilliantly dynamic FM sound in pristine quality. Picking up where its award winning predecessor, the FM7, left off, the FM8 takes FM synthesis to a new level. With its emphasis on ease-of-use, the FM8 brings a high degree of simplicity to the otherwise intricate process of FM synthesis.

A central aspect of FM8 is usability. The "Easy Edit Page" offers a clearly designed interface with simple controls that adjust more complex parameters automatically, allowing you to take a far more musical approach to FM synthesis. The more detailed editing pages have been improved for easier handling and are all accessible with just one click. FM8 lets you play straight away!

The FM8 offers an unprecedented range of features and effects. The classic crystalline bells and keys are perfect for creating melodic and percussive sounds of the highest quality. A unique arpeggiator, a revolutionary sound morphing feature and a large selection of new, charismatic effects add countless sound-shaping possibilities. The sonic potential of FM8 goes well beyond the confines of conventional FM synthesis.

Included with FM8 are over 960 ready-to-play factory sounds. Rich and detailed, these presets exemplify the strengths of FM synthesis, from dynamic digital pianos to bright, bold brass. Also included are a number of effect rack, sound morphing and arpeggio presets. The integrated KoreSound® Browser makes managing the KORE-configured presets fast and easy. Simply search and you will find - instantly.

I'm not usually moved to big-up 'free' versions of big music software developers wares. Usually these things are pretty useless cut-down versions of their commercial cousins, however Native Instruments Kore Player is, for a freebie, amazing.

Kore Player doesn't have any time-outs, save-disables or bursts of noise. What it does have is masses of free sounds, which all sound amazing. What's more after playing around with the my free version last night I pretty much got to grip with how the thing worked in 15 minutes, which compared to a lot of music software is a VERY short space of time (for me anyway).

I guess the idea is that after using the player punters will be so blown-away that they end up investing in expansion packs, and I certainly caught my self looking at the price of expansion packs on NI's website, but even if you don't, what you get for free is pure quality.

When discussing guitar modeling software, it usually comes down to how well the included amps sound, but there’s much more to the applications than just amps and cabinets.

[originally Jim Dalrymple | 05.09.2008, Gibson.com]

While the process of re-amping the guitar signal gives guitar players a variety of options when it comes to shaping the tone of the guitar, we don’t have to use the amps. Each of the guitar modeling applications comes with a wide range of virtual effects too.

In fact, an application like Guitar Rig 3 has over 40 effects that can be used to shape the tone of a guitar track that has already been recorded. So if you don’t think you had enough Chorus on the track you can go in after the fact and add the effect without the need to re-record.

Adding an effect to a guitar track is really simple. First load the Guitar Rig plug-in into the track of your favorite music recording program. Normally at this stage you would choose the amp you want to play through, but we are going to skip that this time and move on to the effects.

If you click the “Components” button on the Guitar Rig interface you will find tabs with Modulation, EQ, Volume, and other tools. If you click on the “Rev” tab, you will see several Reverb and Echo effects. Double-clicking on an effect will automatically load it into the panel on the right hand side and make it active.

Before you add too many effects, set the parameters on each one as you go―if you keep adding effects the sound will be too muddy to get a clear sound when you try to adjust the settings.

You can see in the included screenshot that I inserted a Chorus, Studio Reverb, and Delay, in that order. Taking my own advice, I added an effect and adjusted the parameters for each one as I went. I would also turn off each effect to make sure the others were sounding the way I expected.

Each effect also has presets included that you can use, but for the most part if you are used to adjusting parameters on an analog pedal, adjusting the dials on the virtual effects is the same thing.

Been a little hard to find time for new tunes this month, due to changing jobs.. but have still managed to get 2 or 3 loops with interesting ideas. If I don't expect to complete them I'll put the loops on newsgrounds for someone to use, but still hoping to find the time at the moment, so fingers crossed.

Registered the REAPER in the end, great program deserves support.. check it out here

Also worth looking at, is Native Instruments Kore Player which is a VST with sounds from their more expensive range of synths. It's free, and (so far) works great with reaper, so hoping to do something with this pretty soon.

Lots of craziness lately, so I thought I'd drop in a leave an update.

First, I wanted to thank all of you who've decided to stop in to check out my humble little bloggggg. Thanks for the comments -- I'll try to keep the videos and whatnot coming. Honestly, this whole blog business has been occupying my mind lately - thinking of content and direction.

That being said, I have a couple of tutorials/videos that I have in mind. I want to apologize in advance if they seem random and unrelated - they are just coming off the top of my head. I'm basically recording them and posting on topics that are currently relevant to me for one reason or another...

What's Been Keeping Me Busy

1. Organs and Pads - in the never-ending pursuit to find the perfect sounds (and pads) for live sampling, I decided that I wanted to make a Hammond B3 pad. This idea (which is by no means original, by the way) was motivated by some Hillsong United stuff. I noticed that a lot of their songs have a B3 in them, but they use it a lot like a pad - with a healthy amount of reverb and delay, it seems. Well, seeing as they have a real B3 on stage oftentimes, with a keyboardist who is rockin' the swell pedal on said Hammond B3, they are at a slight advantage.
I decided that I would rather not mess with a swell pedal (and would rather not bother Benji with it, as he's getting his feet wet with the whole keyboard setup). Thus, I needed a way to get a B3 soft synth that I have to auto-swell. The problem with this is that the B3 sampler that I have (Native Instruments B4), there is no way to adjust the attack envelope. So, 4 hours later, I found a solution to this problem (which ended up being a bit harder to solve than I thought it would have been), and ended up with a great sounding B3 pad. I'll share what I found in a video/tutorial - I think it will help y'all out, as you can use it for any soft synths. I could have made it easier on myself and just used Reason, but I simply could not find a B3 that sounded as good as the NI one, so I made things more difficult for myself, but I was glad to have learned some valuable tools
Along these lines, I am also planning on doing a video primer to the ADSR envelopes - understanding this is important for anyone doing sampling and work with synths.

2. Korg PadKontrol - Benji and I both chipped in a bought a Korg PadKontrol. This is an amazing little USB sampling pad. Whats incredible about it is the fact that it has an assignable XY pad...more on that later. I plan on doing a review on this bad boy, so be looking for that.

3. Plugins - I went on a long search for some freeware plugins/synths. I found some that I have found to be particularly useful. I will make sure to share my findings with you guys -- some quick reviews and overviews of them. I'm excited about some of these!

4. DBX Driverack - Our church uses a DBX Driverack to manage our PA. We just successfully got this guy hooked up to the wireless network...and shazam! I can pull up the DBX software and work on the FOH EQ, crossovers, delays, etc... all from my laptop. I'll post some more thoughts on this a bit later as well. This is gonna make a huge difference. A huge thanks to Joe Hohman for hooking it up!
Well, be expecting quite a bit of stuff over the next week...
Thanks for stickin' around!

This tutorial will teach you how to make a basic lead patch. You will be using 2 oscillators, a 24dB

This tutorial will teach you how to make a basic lead patch. You will be using 2 oscillators, a 24dB LPF, 2 ADSR envelopes, and a LFO. Please be familiar with the basics on how your synthesizer operates and where all of its components are before proceeding.

Here's the instructions...

Start out by setting oscillators 1 and 2 to saw waves. They should be mixed 50 / 50 and not sync'd. You could do this patch with one oscillator but use two if you got them. =)

Next set the filter type to a 24dB low pass filter with the frequency set to about 80% and resonance to about 40%. Now set the filter envelope ADSR to the following:

Attack: 0%
Decay: 10%
Sustain: 100%
release: 50%

Once this is done set the amp ADSR to these settings:

Attack: 0%
Decay: 50%
Sustain: 100%
release: 0%

Now we have a pretty static sounding lead but we want to make it a bit more lively. To do that you are going to patch a LFO to the pitch in on oscillator 1. This LFO should be a sine wave with a rate of about 60%. Once that is patched in adjust the depth until you just hear it modulating the signal.

That's it, now feel free to play around with the filter settings, oscillator waveforms, and LFO rate and depth.

By the way... This patch sounds ok on its own but it is very basic and meant to teach you the possibilities of your synthesizer. One thing to note though, if you add some delay, this lead really take on a whole new feeling!

Ok so there are a few ways to get a kick sound, in this tutorial I will outline the basic way using 1 oscillator, and 2 ADSR envelopes.

Once again, before you proceed make sure you know how to operate your synthesizer. This patch may require you to use the advanced patching features of your synthesizer.

Lets begin...

Start out by setting oscillator 1 to a sine wave. You will not need the filter for this patch to work so you simply bypass it or set the frequency all the way up. Next set the amp envelope to the following settings:

Attack: 0%
Decay: 50% - 60%
Sustain: 0%
Release: 0%

Now you should have a thumpy sound but not a kick. To get it to be a kick sound we must get the pitch of oscillator to fall quickly once you hit the keyboard. To do this we will use a second envelope. Here are the settings:

Attack: 50%
Decay: 0%
Sustain: 100%
Release: 0%

Now if you just patch this to the pitch in on osc 1 you will notice that the sound goes up not down, not what we want. To get the pitch to do down you must invert the signal from the envelope. Once the signal is inverted patch it to the pitch in for oscillator 1 and you should have a very simple kick drum sound. To adjust the sound play around with the Decay on the amp envelope and the Attack on the mod envelope.

Please note that inverting the signal from a ADSR envelope is synthesizer specific so there isn't much I can do to explain how to do this, please refer to you manual on how to get negative values.

Variation (Advanced)

Ok so there is another way to get a great kick drum sound. Instead of using a ADSR envelope you can use a LFO. This may not be possible with every synthesizer simply because of the fact that the LFO must be sync'd to the gate, and this patching option is not always available. Here is how to get the kick drum using a LFO.

Start with the same settings on oscillator 1 and the amp envelope as before. Now set the waveform for your LFO to a saw wave and set the rate all the way down. Now make the following patch connections:

LFO --> Oscillator 1 pitch in
Gate --> LFO sync

This second patch triggers the LFO only when you hit a key, without it your patch won't work. There may also be an option on your synthesizer to trigger your LFO when a key is pressed, this is the same as patching the gate to the LFO sync. Look for LFO and envelope trigger settings in the manual.

To adjust the sound, turn up the LFO rate a bit.

Now What???

Now that you have the patch... what can you do to tweak it...

If you want a harder techo type kick sound, switch the oscillator wave form to a triangle or square wave.

Add distortion and tweak the amp decay and mod attack to get a really cool hardcore kick.

Mix the oscillator with a noise source and tweak the envelope settings and you can get an electronic 909-ish style snare drum.

Remove the oscillator and just use noise and you can get into the making some hi hats!

Finally start playing with the low pass filter frequency and resonance!

Here is a basic patch to create a warm haunted pad type sound. This patch is very straight forward; however, before you begin you should know how to operate your synthesizer and know the basics behind oscillators (especial pulse width), filters and envelope generators. If you are unfamiliar with these concepts please read through your synthesizers documentation before continuing.

Ok here it is:

Start out by setting Oscillators 1 and 2 to pulse waves. Both should have their pulse width slightly offset from being a perfect square wave. (You can experiment with this). Next set oscillator 2 down on octave.

Now set the low pass filter frequency to about 20% and the resonance to about 65%. Note: this patch was designed with a 12 dB LPF.

Ok now to get it to sound like a pad just set the amp ADSR to the following:

Attack: 35% - 45%
Decay: 50% - 60%
Sustain: 80%
Release: 50%

That's it. You should now have a nice warm tubular sounding pad. Play around with the waveforms, pulse width, and filter.
