A falta de modelos negras e asiáticas nas passarelas já foi tema de inúmeros artigos, matérias e discussões entre estilistas e agentes de modelo. Quem fez ressurgir esta questão foi a edição de julho da Vogue Itália. Recheada de modelos negras, a revista foi uma das mais vendidas de toda sua história. E agora com a proximidade das semanas de moda internacionais a questão volta à tona.

Que modelos altas e loiras fazem sucesso em campanhas publicitárias, desfiles e editoriais de moda não é novidade, porém elas não representam a diversidade de etnias. Quantas modelos asiáticas, indígenas, negras e latinas desfilaram na última temporada? Uma coisa é certa: muito menos que as modelos que seguem o padrão de beleza ocidental.

Em entrevista ao tablóide inglês The London Paper, a modelo Naomi Campbel, que já sofreu na pele inúmeros casos de preconceito, afirma: “Na maioria das vezes as modelos negras são excluídas por grandes agências. A moda deve voltar à época em que estilistas maravilhosos como Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace e Azzedine Aïala tinham uma grande representação de mulheres belas, brancas, negras, chinesas e latinas”.

Com a visibilidade que a questão tomou em tempos de Barack Obama, talvez nesta temporada número de modelos fora do estereótipo ocidental aumente. Porém, mesmo no Brasil, um país onde a diversidade de etnias é grande, nas passarelas ela não é representada. No penúltimo São Paulo Fashion Week, de 150 modelos que subiram às passarelas, apenas cinco eram negros. Na última temporada o quadro teve uma pequena reversão.

Em entrevista ao Blog Descolex, editado pelo jornalista Glauco Sabino, quando perguntado se a moda é racista, Alcino Leite, editor de moda da Folha de São Paulo opina: “Creio que sim, da mesma forma como ela discrimina os feios, os velhos e os não magros”. Para ele existe um outro motivo para o racismo da moda: os negros costumam não estar entre os consumidores. Portanto, o sistema age também de maneira discriminatória por conta de seus interesses comerciais. Uma vez que os negros passem a ser contados entre os consumidores, certamente isso tudo mudaria.

Sobre esta questão, em matéria publicada no site G1, Bruno Soares agente de modelos, lembra ainda que “Além do preconceito racial, o preconceito social é muito mais forte”. Soares explica que na França, eles colocam um monte modelos asiáticas porque a Ásia virou um grande investidor.

Apesar do grande número de discussões sobre o tema, percebe-se um grande silêncio em torno disto. A top sudanesa Alek Wek, ao ser questionada sobre o assunto por uma repórter da Agência Reuters, relutou em falar, mesmo assumindo ter sofrido preconceito no início da carreira, já que seus traços africanos se afastam muito do padrão ocidental. Estilistas culpam agências, agências culpam os estilistas e a falta de modelos. E a novela continua.

The two were just in her favorite country, Brazil, where he dropped a cool $18.5 million on a penthouse apartment for Campbell. Glamurama.com says the place was a “gift” to the supermodel and the couple will use it as their home in Brazil. Then they traveled to Bahia, where they stayed in a $50,000-a-day beach house. Campbell, who’s trying to improve her rage-plagued image, is also focusing on being photographed at charitable events and launching a clothing line through 284, the new label from Daslu. Damn, must be nice. This dude got that long money for real.

Surprise, surprise, yet another pretty celebrity is proclaiming that some insanely rich guy is “the one.” 46 year old Vladislav Doronin is Naomi Campbell’s latest punching bag, dating on the sly until they were spotted together at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday celebration. Why do men keep dating Naomi Campbell? Is this like girls going after the bad boy, thinking they can “change” him? The couple reportedly met at the Cannes Film Festival this past May, and have been in each other’s pocket since then. There’s even rumours that the couple are on the verge of an engagement… yes your math is good and they have been dating only two months.

What am I talking about? Well of course the annual fall edition of Vogue magazine – duh!

This year’s September issue tips the scales at 798 pages. The biggest yet. (which begs the question of why they didn’t add two more pages and hit the 800 page mark.)

Nonetheless I spend about two hours carefully thumbing through each glossy ad, article and paper perfume sample.

I love it!

I also noticed a trend for this year. Over the years, actresses have taken over the world and now the pendulum is swinging back in favor of model centered ads.

Most importantly this year’s issue highlights the return of the 90’s supermodels. It was almost like time stopped: Linda Evangelista, Shalom Harlow, Christy Turlington, Amber Valletta, Claudia Schieffer, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell…the only two noticeably absent were Cindy Crawford and the French President’s new wife. (Must have very important first lady duties whatever they are.)

I also see fashion as art. And the accompanying pictorials are just an extension of that realm.

I have thought many times of being a fashion photographer…creating something.

Look at the films Rent, Alexander, Sin City and her own film Descent. Though Josie in the pussycats wasn’t her greatest film, she still is amazingly stunning in it.

Salman Rushdie’s ex wife, I bet he is kicking himself, another amazingly beautiful women who again is never high in lists or featuring at all, can speak up to 8 different languages, has a huge intelligence and another women I have seen in the flesh and nearly gone run over by a London cabbie, again like Natalie Portman my breath was taken away.

5. Halle Berry

Since watching the film Boomerang, and Fallen Angel, Halle Berry has lit up cinema screens. Now 40 years old Halle is even more beautiful then she has ever been and is now settling into her new life and being a mother gives her added glow (when she was pregnant and came to London for her premier she looked like a Greek goddess) after the heartache and pain of previous relationships. When you think of all the Movie heroines in the 1950’s, wonderful lips, body, shape, eyes, now roll on 50 years later and this is what Scarlett Johansson has and every film I see her in you are bewildered by her beauty and in some ways it must take away her creditability as a actress and recently a singer (very much an album like Nico from Velvet Underground would do if alive) but mark my words a actress who will gain more respect as a actress and will be outstandingly beautiful for a very longtime.

A black model who has been gaining a more recognisable profile in the last 2-3 years, not just as a model but an actress, and spokes person for many issues. Deserved to be one of the four separate models on ‘The Black Issue’ Vogue cover along with Naomi Campbell and Jourdan Dunn. Her beauty is astounding and will only get better with age and will become the next Iman to have modeling work way into her mid-40’s to later life.

A latin beautiful women of the highest order, Jennifer Lopez since the lat 1990’s has been adapting and turning heads with her famous ASSet and her stunning looks. The multi talented actress, stylist, singer (may not have the greatest voice but some songs are okay), has been working hard and now seems to exude beauty still into her 40’s and still looks amazing, I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years brings..

A women like Scarlett has a very 1950’s quality about her. In her mid 30’s she seems to be not aging at all.

A Spainish actress who has become more and more prominent in Hollywood, she has had a reputation as a heartbreaker due to her romances with Nicolas Cage, Mathew Mc and famously Tom Cruise. A naturally beautiful woman with great attributes and shines in many diverse films, blockbusters or independent films. Her confident approach mixed with her humble European nature makes her a very alluring women.

When watching music videos every so often you do see a beautiful women, and when I saw this sassy, pouting beautiful women singing and moving, I was hooked. ‘Don’t Cha’ this song was a call and response to beauty and the Pussycat Dolls were now known and seen. Nicole eludes sexiness, and has supermodel good looks, and to consider she is in her mid 30’s she will probably get more attractive when older. Her dress sense is also a little eccentric but can look amazing in plain outfits too. Every fashion magazine shoot and every music video she is in shows what a beautiful women she is, it is a shame they couldn’t’ t get her solo career going as the package is great but no songs with any musical bite.

The English rose with a naturally beautiful face, her warmth of her personality is showed on interviews and even off the cuff she still exudes sexiness, without even trying. I remember seeing Kate Winslet in titanic and gladly she was for a film which sank like a ship in my memory apart from her ravishing beauty and still now 10 years on Kate Winslet is one of the most beautiful women in the world..

From her first appearance on Dark Angel to her latest offerings in film Jessica Alba is a beautiful women and no denying that. Amazing facial features and a body to match and eventually her sexiness potential was shown in Sin City and from then on her offers of film roles (not all good-Awake?), but this women has a bright future and even a child birth won’t affect this ladies beauty. Rumour has it that she was Tom Cruise’s first choice before getting his team to contact Katie Holmes.

The Supermodel that has for over 10 years graced many catwalks and fashion magazines is still going strong. She is the highest paid supermodel in the world and is the worlds richest supermodel. Here beauty is obvious to see and her mix of Germanic descent and Brazilian upbringing makes her attributes attract a wide range of people hence her popularity. Also her humanitarian efforts should eb priasede and always seems to give beack to poor communties in Brazil to set-up projects..

A model who has for a at least 20 years been gracing the catwalks and was one of the first major Supermodels, has been a influential women to many young Black women who wish to enter the fashion industry which is predominantly racist. Her personal life has overshadowed her effect on the industry and that is due to being unfairly persecuted but also her own ‘Diva’ demands haven’t helped. However at over 40 Naomi still has a body most 20 years old yearn for let alone over that age, a toned dancer’s body on an Amazonian beauty.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Roger at a birthday get together for a friend. As fashionably late as he was, all in attendance greeted him affectionately and I soon learned why, he's quite the charmer. I caught up to Roger recently at Diner in the meatpacking district where we traded stories about fragrances. I had a hunch he was into them but not to this degree...read on for yourself.

What's your earliest recollection of fragrance?
The citrusy linger of my Dad’s Blenheim Bouquet (Penthaligon) on the stairwell, as he slipped on his jacket to go out on Saturday evenings. As a kid, I tried to make perfume by soaking handfuls of lilacs from the garden in cold water and then eventually bringing the whole experiment to a slow boil to concentrate the smell. I recall a heady mess on the kitchen counter.

What are some of your favorite fragrances?
Over the years, I find myself coming back to certain disciplines of thought to which I have handily prescribed a scent – Bel Ami by Hermes, Acqua Coloniale by L’Erbolario and Garrigue by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier. Thanks to my buddy Antonio, I have a man in Naples who has created something special that I wear sparingly!

There was a time when my go-to scent was Romeo Gigli. In the 80s when severe shoulder-padding adorned even bodysuits from Donna Karan, the designs of Gigli looked artless and yet distinct. Gigli brought the same sense of proportion and colour to the design of his men’s cologne - from the lilac rectangular box with the dark orange label to the citrine green liquid to the bottle itself, which looked like a burgundy domed minaret, with metal coils around its neck. I would stock bottles of it like champagne.

What's currently in your rotation?
In an effort to simplify my life, I have doubled up on classifications on the domestic front, which means sorting CDs by alphabet and musical genre and arranging the bookshelf by size and jacket cover. In the bathroom, only white packaged products are allowed in the medicine cabinet, and only brown bottled scents are on display, everything else is hidden. Coincidentally, I suppose, I am drawn right now to Flower Power by Comme De Garcons, L’Occitane and Helmut Lang’s Cuiron.

How often do you go out looking for something new? What specifically do you look for?
Not often and little in particular. When a favorite bottle is finished, I’ll replenish it. However, if it’s a new scent to which I’m not keenly attached, I'll use the opportunity to review a scent I had initially waited to buy or to preview something new.

Have you ever purchased the same fragrance more than once? If so, what was it and what about it made it worthy of a repeat buy?
Several scents, depending on how they reacted to my skin and the responses they elicited. Though I cannot say print or television campaigns inform my choices as much as before, but I remember being repeatedly seduced by the ads for Kouros, Greek god iconography in blue and white, and by the black and white visuals for Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent produced by Jean Baptiste Mondino with a young Naomi Campbell, in silhouette, hair bobbed and playing the part of a scatting chanteuse. Need I say more?

How would you finish this statement, "My most memorable fragrant moment would be...?
I have several: early mornings in general, especially Springtime in the country with the windows open; reading Patrick Susskind’s “Perfume” on the New York subway and noticing a heightened awareness to smells; walking into the Comme Des Garcons perfume shop in Paris for the first time; Fracas by Robert Piguet and the accompanying memories of a prep-school romance to more mature expressions of love and lust, encouraged by Caron’s Yatagan.

Any fashion enthusiast can recite the names of the known black models off the top of their heads: that’s how scarce they are. Other ethnicities, even more scarce. Vogue Italia’s July All-Black issue not only sold out and was reprinted, but it caused an “outcry” amongst members of the fashion community and fashion enthusiasts and sparked up the debate about the lack of black models in the industry. Franca Sozzani, Vogue Italia’s editor, did a fantastic job with this issue because it does not remind me of the sameness found in the pages of Wintour’s American Vogue.

But, if we continue to focus solely on black models, the industry will avoid representing other ethnicities like Indians, Middle-Eastern, Asians, etc and will start trying to include diversity by only including black models alongside the majority of Caucasians. “Yeah but we had seven black models on the runway this time.” That’s not enough diversity. Adding five more black models to your line-up does not equal diversity when you have a total of 49 models in a 20-minute show. Black models would represent 14% of the runway while the Caucasian models have the majority with 86%. Diversify – there are tons of different countries in the world where you can find beautiful, well-toned women that just so happen to be 5’8” and up. Although most models are shipped in from Brazil and Eastern European countries where being 6’0” tall and skinny seems to be the country’s mission statement, they are still Caucasian-esque (in the case of Brazilian models, most of the famous ones, i.e. Gisele and Alessandra are of European descent).

People are attracted to exotic things and people; it’s basically a fact – where do you take a lavish vacation? North America? Not likely. Exotic women are beautiful, see the issue of Vogue India for example. The dark skinned model that graces the cover and the editorial is stunning (picture below). Why oh why is Anna not embracing this? There are too many models that look like they came off the last ship from Mars and landed on the runways of major fashion weeks and invaded the covers of Vogue, Bazaar and various other magazines. I hate it. The alien look is cool but we need to start embracing what half the world is, not blue eyed and blond. It’s noticeable that when ethnic models strut their long legs on the runway or pose for the camera, they just so happen to be some of the most beautiful people (I am not hating on Caucasian models at all (Tasha Tilberg anyone?) – I just want to encourage diversity).

I worked at a modeling agency for two years where our goal was to increase the visibility of ethnic models. Our roster had girls from all over – India, Syria, Vietnam, Ghana, and so on. Even the Caucasian girls we recruited did not fit the conventional look; they all had something unique that made them breathtakingly beautiful. Sadly, we seemed to be the only agency fighting for diversity. This past May during Ottawa Fashion Week; models from all races graced the runway. The correspondent at Flare magazine took notice and was pleased and surprised at the multicultural runway. Canada is a highly diverse and multicultural community, especially in larger metropolitan areas like Ottawa and that’s where we should start.

The question is, this has been an on going issue, right up there with other issues the modeling industry has been dealing with like drugs, sexual abuse, age and anorexia. This issue, however, doesn’t “physically” hurt anyone but it is, to me, considered a form of racism. Take for example the skin lightening creams women in the Eastern world use in order to rid themselves of their dark skin so they can look like the conventional Western woman. The fact that we are taught that women with light skin and lighter features is beautiful has an affect on women worldwide don't you think? Even in India, where many of the world’s most beautiful women reside, considers the lighter skinned Bollywood stars as the most beautiful. Why? Because that’s what we see everywhere. Dark women are beautiful, again, check out the Vogue India model below, she’s dark and stunning.

So why is this issue getting into mainstream media now? Is it because Naomi Campbell refuses to retire from the runway because she’s afraid no black models will be walking on them anymore if she does? Is it the release of Vogue Italia’s all-Black issue? Who knows, but know this, ethnic models have always been underrepresented on the runways of major fashion weeks and even at the smaller ones (Montreal, Toronto). As frustrating as Naomi’s antics are, you can’t help but appreciate the fact that she, along with Iman, is one of the only ethnic models to be considered a “supermodel.” That is an accomplishment. Although I will continue to work at changing the way the fashion industry looks at ethnic models, I know that it will not be an easy process and can only hope that one day; they will all be represented equally, whether Black, Indian, Middle-Eastern, or Latino.

- O hotel em que a atriz Nany People está hospedada em Teresina, no Piauí, pegou fogo na madrugada de hoje, o que fez a comediante do mundo drag sair às pressas do local, informou a repórter Yala Sena ao site Terra.

Nany, que está em Teresina desde quinta-feira em turnê com a peça Nany People Salvou meu Casamento, foi surpreendida com o fogo por volta de 1h da madrugada no hotel Real Palace, no centro da cidade. O coronel Chagas Martins, que comandará a investigação, disse que somente após um laudo saberá se foi um ato criminoso ou acidental.

La imagen habitual de un guardaespaldas es la de un tipo grande y chulo. Seco. Violento. Ésa es la imagen que se rompe en mil pedazos cuando uno conoce a Joe Buckle. Joe es un inglés de Cornwell, bajito, simpático y muy educado. Joe vive en Ibiza y trabaja en esto desde hace cinco años. Se ocupa de la seguridad de gente como Naomi Campbell, Paris Hilton y Wayne Rooney. Trabaja cuando ellos se divierten y su tarea es que lo hagan con toda tranquilidad. "A veces, parece que vivo la vida de un millonario. Sentado en la popa de un yate, con una puesta de Sol fabulosa, estoy en la gloria. Pero en realidad es duro, te das cuenta cuando del barco vas a un club y sales a las siete para coger un avión e ir a otro lado".

Después de estar en nómina de una firma británica que tiene personal en zonas de conflicto como Irak, Israel y Afganistán, Joe montó su propia empresa, Ibizapr.com. Junto con un equipo formado por un par de compatriotas, un francés, otro de Isla Mauricio y un español, cubre el área del Mediterráneo, de Ibiza a Saint Tropez, de Marbella a Cerdeña. El verano es la época más solicitada. Las vacaciones de las estrellas del rock y del deporte, de los ejecutivos con mucha pasta y de los ricos de nacimiento, son las fechas para llenar la cuenta de Joe y sus chicos. Contratar un guardaespaldas por una jornada de ocho horas cuesta 280. Si la cosa se amplía a doce, son 420.

Joe gana menos que cuando se dedicaba al negocio de la noche. Tenía bares y clubes, pero siempre le gustó esto. A los 16 conoció a un tipo que vivía de cuidar la chepa de músicos. Era demasiado joven entonces y siguió a lo suyo: jugar al rugby, sacarse unas libras como socorrista, estudiar. Por casualidad, le llegó la oportunidad de ocuparse de alguien de visita en Ibiza. Era el actor Stephen Dorff. "Lo pasé bien y el cliente se quedó contento. Me dijo que debería dedicarme a ello. De alguna manera, la profesión me encontró a mí".

Tuvo que prepararse duro. Entrenamiento con armas de fuego, conducción evasiva, evaluación de riesgos, habilidades médicas; mejorar su francés y su español; aprender las cualidades básicas de un buen guardaespaldas. "Hay tener paciencia, iniciativa, capacidad de comprensión y análisis para ver lo que pasa a tu alrededor, capacidad de anticipación, dedicación y empatía con los clientes". Con su discurso y su estudiada forma de plantearlo, Joe parece más un manager que un gorila. "De hecho, nos gusta llamarnos asistentes personales porque eso hacemos la mayor parte del tiempo hasta que nos toca ejercer de guardaespaldas. Somos traductores, conductores, confidentes...". Son todo eso, sí, pero también son algo más.

Aunque no le guste hablar de ello, Joe conserva cicatrices como souvenir de algunas puñaladas. Su tarea consiste en evitar que pase nada y, si pasa, en buscar la forma de escapar. Pero a veces no hay salida. "Si, por lo que sea, la pelea está demasiado cerca o alguien trata de pegar al cliente, lo suyo es dar un puñetazo rápido y efectivo y salir corriendo". Joe siempre ha sido un tío deportista. Insiste en que el rugby le ha enseñado a tirar al adversario sin hacer daño pero acaba admitiendo que tiene otra formación. El Krav Maga es una disciplina de combate y defensa personal israelí creada el siglo pasado y preparada, pues, para amenazas contemporáneas. Su doctrina trata, efectivamente, de evitar el conflicto. Pero también muestra cómo enfrentarse a él si no queda otra. "Te enseña a actuar rápido, de forma agresiva y con determinación para así eliminar cualquier amenaza". Luego, hay que tener en cuenta la lógica legal. "Intentamos golpear con la mano abierta para no hacer daño y evitar juicios y problemas con la policía".

Joe lo sigue contando todo con mucha tranquilidad. Recuerda cómo una vez estaban apuntando con una pistola a su cliente y pudo resolver el entuerto usando la palabra. Lo dice sin darse muchos aires y añadiendo una frase que posiblemente sea lo más parecido a una broma que es capaz de soltar frente a la grabadora: "Los británicos somos famosos por nuestra diplomacia". En seguida, vuelve a su seriedad: "Lo más peligroso de nuestra profesión son las persecuciones de los paparazzi. Pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo dentro de un coche con una celebridad y nos acordamos de lo que le pasó a la princesa Diana, por eso nos lo tomamos muy en serio".

Al parar el coche y abrir la puerta a su pagador, Joe tiene que fijarse en detalles como tapar con su cuerpo el hueco que surge entre ésta y la carrocería. Por ahí puede pasar la bala de un francotirador o, más bien, el flash de un paparazzi. Un cliente retratado sin ropa interior es un cliente descontento. Joe tiene que ocuparse de eso y de toda la gente con cámaras en el móvil. Su trabajo es proteger la intimidad de las celebridades. Incluso ante sus fans. Pero su tarea, también, es soportar lo que el llama el privilegio del rico. "La capacidad de hacer lo que le de la gana en cualquier momento, de cambiar planes, de ser caprichoso. Nosotros debemos tener una actitud positiva ante eso, aceptarlo. Cualquier cosa que nos digan debemos estar preparados para responder: ‘Ok, no hay problema, en seguida'".

Cualquier cosa menos darle una paliza a alguien, como se estila últimamente entre algún famoseo ibérico. "Nos pagan por defender a la gente, no por atacarla". Joe sabe que su profesión tiene fama de acoger a montones de matones y no tiene problemas en señalar el hormiguero: "Del entorno de los gimnasios, de la gente que levanta pesas y toma esteroides, llega mucho violento. Son tíos que pierden la calma la calma con facilidad pero ningún cliente quiere un guardaespaldas que vaya armando follón, eso no es una buena campaña de relaciones públicas".

La discreción, pues, es otra de las virtudes de un buen profesional. Como un cura guardando el secreto de confesión, Joe nunca pronuncia los nombres de sus vigilados. Pero habla de jornadas que se alargan porque una estrella del rock ha decidido invertir en cocaína o de peleas entre dos clientes locos, borrachos y australianos. Quizás por eso confiesa que prefiere ser contratado por mujeres, "con los tíos hay demasiada testosterona en el aire". Quizás por eso o, quizás, por el argumento de aquella película de Kevin Costner y Whitney Houston. "Situaciones así son muy habituales. Convives muy cerca de la persona, te comportas como un caballero: eres atento, le abres las puertas, la proteges... Te puede ver como el hermano perfecto o como el novio perfecto. Luego está la profesionalidad de cada uno. En mi caso, he permanecido siempre 100% profesional... Pero tengo que confesar que ahora me arrepiento de algunas situaciones que he dejado pasar".
