The Klonoa series is regarded as one of the finest of all platforming series, and despite its looks is one of the more challenging and for good reason. There are 7 Klonoa games, 5 of which are of the platformer genre and 4 are available in the US. This article will take a look into all 7 games, and give you an idea of what to expect from each one of them. If you call yourself a platformer fan it is essential that you at least play two of the titles. To find out which two as well as what the other 5 are all about hit the jump and read on for this exlusive Platformer Update Feature for the Klonoa Series!

Title: Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

The more popular of the series was also the first to be released. The game played out as a 2.5D Sidescroller, a term that was coined by this very title. What this means is while you could never free roam around the environments your path was set on a pre-determined route that gave the appearance of moving through a 3D space, even though you were still stuck on an "on-rails" system. Coupled with beautiful 2D sprites on a 3D moving backdrop it was a very beautiful effect which was later used by many other games , the most notable is "Tomba" for the PlayStation.

Klonoa's gameplay mechanic did not have him jumping on enemies heads to kill them, instead he would shoot an energy shot (actualy this buddy Huepow) from his ring. Doing this would capture the enemy and give Klonoa control of them in a bloated baloontype state. His options included using the enemy to double jump (holding the jump button allowed you to float for a short time), throw them into the background to grab items, or simply throw them to kill other enemies. The other most notable gameplay element is the intergrated puzzles throught the game. When I say puzzles though its more of figuring out things such as throwing this enemy to hit that switch and quickly grab the flying enemy as you are falling to hit the other switch before the last switch you hit is deactivated. The puzzles are simple enough to not cause headaches and are actualy the best part of the series. Be warned though, while this is probably the easiest klonoa game when it comes to puzzles I can't imagine a 7 year old getting by some of them without help. These gameplay mechanics carried over to almost all othe Klonoa games and became a staple for the series.

Door to Phantomile also sports one of the best gaming soundtracks ever in my opinion, from light hearted melodies to dark and sinister tunes, this game has it all, and all wonderfully composed to fit every level and moment in the game.

In terms of rarity this is one of the rarer Klonoa games, if you want an original complete copy it will be around the $30-$40 range, however it is also possible that Klonoa: Door to Phantomile will be making its way to the Playstation Network eventualy. Either way this is probably the best game to start off on from the series, and is one of the milestones in platformer gaming.

The second released Klonoa game never actualy made it to the US and was exclusive to Japan for the import only handheld Wonderswan. The looks and gameplay this game used were a departure from it's PS1 counterpart obviously due to the handheld limitations, it was also only in black and white. However despite the difference in technology this still very much feels and plays like a Klonoa game, and its gameplay later carried over to the Gameboy Advance titles.

The game still used the same elements from the first such as having to first shoot enemies with your ring to use them for solving puzzles as well as jumping and throwing them. His mid ait floating ability also remained intact. There were 5 worlds to conquer all sporting the signature up beat music (which wasn't bad despite the system's mono sound). Out of all of the platforming Klonoa games this is probably the least essential and I only recommend it to diehard Klonoa fans or collectors. Finding a copy may be rough due to its JP only release, I was lucky enough to get mine in its limited edition gift packaging that came with a Wonderswan system for under $45, however you will mostly be paying in the range of $40-$60 for a copy of this game.

Klonoa's first GBA title followed in the footsteps of Moonlight Museum, however this was the first time that people in the US got to experience a totally 2D Klonoa title. Klonoa has to travel through 5 worlds compared of 8 stages (called "visions"), and a boss at the end of each world. Graphically it came across very vivid and colorful, it used a celshading style that has harsh black lines around items, characters, and platforms. It was also used in the games story cutsceens. This worked very well because so few games had actually used this art style before on a handheld system.

A staple in the Klonoa series also remained which was its jumpy and upbeat music. Klonoa's move set also returned allowing him to glide in the sky for a short period of time, and use enemies for double jumps and weapons. Blocks also became a large part of solving puzzles so there was alot of lifting and throwing of boxes going on. Purchasing this game today is no hard task, a loose copy of the game should cost you no more than $5-$8 online and a complete copy will be around $10-$15. If you are looking for the best handheld Klonoa game this is the one, unless you like much more difficult puzzles with less emphasis on platforming, there is his 2nd outing on the GBA.

Title: Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil

System: Playstation 2

Genre: 2.5D Sidescrolling Platformer

The first and only true sequel to the original Klonoa on Playstation 1, both remaining the best in the series. It stays true to the original gameplay that made Door to Phantomile so charming, only this time Namco had better technology on their hands with the Playstation 2 which made for an even better graphical presentation. Retained from Empire of Dreams, Klonoa 2 used cel-shaded graphics and boy did they make the game look phenomenal. Most likely because any hard edges on objects were hidden behind the black lines, however this made everything have a very smooth graphical quality. The cel shading is not overstated and is used very carefully and in the right areas, hard black lines are not all over the place and most environmental objects still retain a line free border, but characters and items have different intensity in the lines. A gem in the distance will have a barely noticeable outline while an enemy in the front will have a much more pronounced line. Large background draw distances coupled with the detailed path you were on made for a great combination. This is definitely the best looking game in the series and one of the best looking games available for the PS2.

While Klonoa once again has all all of his traditional moves (if its not broken why fix it?) some new gameplay elements were added such as snowboarding sequences which are viewed upon from a behind the back perspective giving players the ability to move left and right as well as jump. These sequences did not happen often but when they did it was a surprising yet refreshing break in the gameplay and a welcome addition. Klonoa was also joined by new friends Lolo and Popka, Huepow was no longer the power of his ring, instead Lolo provides him with the energy needed to power it. Musically it is great if not better than Door to Phantomile, and is really worth owning the soundtrack for.

Many still debate if Door to Phantomile or Lanatea's Veil is the better game, really it could go either way because they both offer the same gameplay just with different graphical qualities andcharacters. If I had to pick one it would probably be the original simply because I found the characters and story to be much more memorable (Huepow largely contributes to this), and experiencing it for the first time there was nothing like it before. In terms of finding this title it has become a bit more difficult in stores such as Gamestop, some searching should get you a copy in no time however. Online once again makes it no problem to get a complete copy for in the $10-$20 range.

Title: Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament

System: Game Boy Advance

Original Release: 2002

Available in: JP, US

Genre: 2D Sidescrolling Platformer

This one was originally released in Japan in 2002 but never made its way to the US until 2005, one of the last great GBA games released that wasn't a remake of sorts. The story of Dream Champ Tournament takes place after those in Empire of Dreams, and it also retains mostly all of the same gameplay from its predecessor except for the new element where at the end of each game world Klonoa must have a foot-race with another adventurer (keeping in the same puzzle type levels) all the while taking on a boss as well.

This one does look better than Empire of Dreams, there are just more colors and it has a more lively and unique look to it. This in my opinion has some of the hardest puzzles in the series, and I would go as far to say that this is the hardest game overall for Klonoa. I remember playing some of the puzzles just thinking how many kids bought this game thinking it would be a simple platformer, but seriously this has some serious thinking involved sometimes. This is also the last US Klonoa game fans would get to see, 6 years later andno other games have been announced for the series. To get a copy of this game is no hard task, it can probably be found in many bargain bins brand new for like $15 or less, or online for around the same price if you are looking for a complete copy.

Title: Klonoa Beach Volleyball

System: Playstation 1

Original Release: 2002

Available in: JP, EU

Genre: Sports Volleyball

This was a huge departure from the Klonoa games we were used to. Namco decided to give the Klonoa series its own Volleyball game which was only available as a budget title in Japan and Europe, they just decided to not give the US any love. That's not necessarily a bad thing though because the game was mediocre at best, and only hardcore Klonoa fans would get any enjoyment out of playing as some of their favorite characters from both the GBA and Playstation series. Of course play the game you had to have your own way of playing import games as US PlayStation's were not region free.

The game featured a multiplayer mode allowing up to 4 players. A multitap was not needed as the game did allow controller sharing, how nice of them. The matches are 2 on 2 across many stage settings from the series, all in hopes of winning a 5-match tournament. Really this is only something hardcore fans of Klonoa should look into buying if you must own every game. It's not that rare at all and can be found online anywhere between $10-$30 depending on where you look.

Title: KlonoaHeroes: Legend of the Star Medal

System: Gameboy Advance

Original Release: 2002

Available in: JP

Genre: Action RPG

Talk about something you would never see coming. Namco decided to give Klonoa his very own Action oriented RPG game on the GBA, however they never made it available outside of Japan. This was the last we would see of Klonoa starring in his own game as of writing this. The game played from a top down perspective that had you guiding Klonoa, Guntz, or Pango to defeat enemies, collect their gold and dream shards (experience points). It was a pretty standard RPG system allowing players to level up to increase stats, find items in towns or on the battle maps, as well as take advantage of enemy weaknesses using the appropriate weapons for attacks.

Of course being an import game from Japan it would make playing the game a bit harder due to the fact that mostly all of the text is unreadable for US or EU players, a guide or walkthrough of sorts is probably best. Graphically the game is not bad at all, and fans say its not a bad game once you learn the basics and get comfortable playing it. This is one of the harder ones to track down, unless you are familiar with import sites there is usually one maybe two of these up on ebay at one time, sometimes non and the price ranges depending on completeness anywhere from $20-$50.

Cameo appearances:

Namco X Capcom

This was a action RPG/Tactical RPG that featured tons of Namco/Capcom characters. Of course something this cool was only available in Japan and never made its way to the US or EU. Klonoa and Gantz are a playable duo in the game. Appearances by Lolo, Janga, Joka, and the Priestess of La-Lakoosha as well as many Moos appear throughout the game.

Quickspot

This was one of those "find the differences" games on the Nintendo DS by NamcoBandai that features several Klonoa themed images (as shown above). This is one of the more recent Klonoa appearances to date.

Point Blank 3

There was a quick cameo in the Playstation game Point Blank 3 where a cardboard pop up face of Klonoa was in the game.

Tales of Symphonia

In this RPG for the Gamecube, the character Presea has a secret outfit resembling Klonoa which is unlocked by changing her title to "Dream Traveler", afterwards shouting out a "Wahoo!" throughout the game. Pretty neat.

Moto GP & Alpine Racer

Klonoaalso made cameos in these two games though I was unable to find any screens.

Conclusion:

I hope you enjoyed learning all about all of the great games the Klonoa series has to offer, they truly are a staple in the platforming genre as well as in gaming itself. If just one person out there who had originally never heard of or played one of the games goes out and does so after reading this and ends up enjoying the experience, my goal is complete.

6/10

Thanks to Kingcom's hard work, I'm proud to announce the return of a beloved feature of the Tales of Phantasia translation - the selector. However, this selector will go far beyond what Tales of Phantasia's did. As many of you know, ToP's selector would appear every time the game was booted and ask the player to choose between two options - Translated or Romanized. However, we have added a third option for Tales of Innocence - Namco!

Namco Features

Gel instead of Gummi

Cape instead of Mantle

Magic Lens instead of Spectacles

All Artes will conform to (or be translated in the style of) the US standards

Additionally, unlike Tales of Phantasia where the option had to be selected every time the game started, Tales of Innocence will store the data in the options menu, where it can be changed like any other option at any point during the game. And perhaps most impressively, the data will be stored in your save data, so once you have set it up, you may never have to think about it again.

This is what I meant when I said that we were doing our best to please everyone! Now fans of Namco Hometek localization, translation, and of romanization can all find things made just for them in the same translation! We hope that this kind of selector will become a standard among Tales translations and game translations in general. It gives the player just what a game should give them - options. We're proud to bring you this option and hope that you will enjoy the game no matter how you choose to play it!

Her name is "Kamikirimushi." Can't really figure out what the last part of her name means, but the first part is pretty straightforward and means "Slayer of Gods" or something to that effect. Anyway, she carries around a big ol' stone club of sorts, similar to something Benkei would wield from the ps2/ps3 Genji titles, except without so much girth. Anyway check out some shots of her in action below:

I was quite a fan of the character creation feature in Soul Calibur 3 (even though I liked Soul Calibur 1&2 more as a game), and to see it's amazing comeback is faaaantastic!

I can see it now: closed rooms accross the country, worried parents, drop in porn sales around the world! "Hey Timmy, whatcha doin in your room? The lights are off... Soul Calibur 4?!?! TIMMY NOOOOOO!!!"

And wow, if you look at all the shots, it's even EASIER to compare how huge Ivy's assets have grown in comparison to the other characters... not that I'm (or anyone, for that matter) complaining.

Not much of a fighting genre fan myself.but I'm getting ready to check out Soul Calibur 4.I know some fans of the game and the Star Wars guys aren't really keen on it,but I think it's just strange enough to work.

I'll be playing the PS3 version since I like Vader and apparently this is a common theme, since pre-orders for the PS3 version seem to be a lot higher than the 360 copy.

I know there has been a embargo on the character Starkiller(or whatever you want to call Vaders secret apprentice) from the Force Unleashed. This character is the one that intrigues me the most.I hear the moveset on that character is one of the best in the game.So that sounds fun.

I only wonder will the characters or more Star Wars characters be available as DLC.At least it won't be Masters of Teras Kasi, right?

Veja abaixo a tradução do pequeno trecho:

*10º LUGAR*

Nome: Morrigan Aensland

Série: Darkstalkers

Empresa: Capcom

*3º LUGAR*

Nome: Athena Asamiya

Série: King of Fighters

Empresa: SNK

Estilo de Luta: Kung Fu

Certo...

Séries: Art of Fighter e Tekken

Empresas: SNK e Namco

E finalmente, a campeã!

*1º LUGAR*

Nome: Chun-li

Série: Street Fighter

Empresa: Capcom

Back in March when I was at ASI I asked the guys at Namco about the possibility of bringing PacManCE

Back in March when I was at ASI I asked the guys at Namco about the possibility of bringing PacManCE or something like it to the arcade scene they said that they recently had been kicking the idea around but since then we haven't heard anything about it. Today at the Microsoft e3 press conference it was revealed that the first "true" sequel to Galaga will be coming to XBLA soon (next month sometime) and it fits the same vein that PacMan CE did. So when I heard that I immediately wondered if Namco's arcade division is still considering the idea of PacManCE in arcades but will combine it with the new Galaga game, much like the recent PacMan/Galaga combo units that were released not long ago. I will have to contact Namco and see if I can get any sort of response on this so I can stop speculating.

BTW- as far as Galaga not having a true sequel, I guess the four other games that came after it didn't count somehow, such as GaPlus(which also was called Galaga 3), Galaga '88, Galaxian 3 and Attack of the Zolgear? I'm just not sure how those aren't considered sequels, especially where Galaga is essentially Galaxian 2, hence the Galaga 3 game. I guess it doesn't matter really, I just thought I'd set the record straight since I'm already seeing reports repeating the line that it's the "first true sequel" which must depend on what the meaning of "true" is.

We're still waiting for Donald Duck Meets Spiderman and Doc Savage but maybe in our next lifetime. Video game crossovers are doubly special since they unite characters that would never otherwise be seen in the same gaming universe. The upcoming X Edge (Cross Edge) is the result of a collaboration between five publishers - Capcom, Namco Bandai, Idea Factory, Gust, and Nippon Ichi. Characters from properties published by all five companies will be joined by original cast members designed for the game. Familiar faces from the gaming fold include Marie the Atelier, Lilith from Vampire, Etna of Disgaea fame, and Aurica from Ar Tonelico.

If X Edge was a 2D fighter, we'd sell a few thousand copies but it's a turn-based tactical adventure game in the style of Namco X Capcom. We're estimating a 500-600 copy sell-through. Preorders ship on Sept 25, 2008.
